Monash Editor’s Notice Board After all these long weekends and holidays, we are here, APRIL! Don’t wake up too early on Sunday April 3 as Daylight Saving Time ends and clocks are turned back one hour. One more hour of sleep, yeah! But that also means daytime is getting shorter and soon we will be having sunset early in the evening. We will have to look at indoor options instead. Find some local indoor entertainment for yourself from our magazine. Anzac Day will be on Monday April 25. Let’s take this chance to memorise all our great heroes that fought for peace and life. We have received so much response to our Hog’s Breath Voucher competition which is valued at $50 each. Thanks to all the participants. The two winners are: Brigitte Girstun and Dave Hackett. Congratulations! If you did not win please don’t give up. Keep trying! And the two colouring stars for the March competitions are Mia (5-year-old) for Eggs and Jenny (4-year-old) for Chantelle’s Wish. Well done Mia and Jenny! We are giving away fantastic prizes again this month. Firstly there are two family passes (each valued at $80) to two lucky readers to the Dog Lovers Show which runs from Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May (9.30am – 5pm daily) at Royal Exhibition Building Melbourne. More info please refer to their official website. Like us on Facebook Your Child in Monash and message us your name and phone number. A Story Like Tory
by Dave Edgren Waiting in the Melbourne airport, I met a lovely and afraid. In our words, our actions and our four-year-old girl named Tory. Tory was with her attitudes toward others our children are Mum, Dad and older brother. Tory was talkative, watching us and becoming like us. playful and very happy. We all, like Tory, are beautifully unique. We While her parents didn't treat her any need to tell this to our children and ourselves. Our stories, told both verbally and with our differently than they treated her brother, to everyone who walked by, Tory was the centre of actions, will either empower the next attention. She was anything but 'normal'. Generation or limit them. Don't repeat bad People stared and smiled. Some people stopped news. Tell good stories. Live with joy and passion. and talked – to Tory or about Tory to her Smile. parents. Later, as we boarded the plane, I noticed Tory's family boarding with us – long after the first class, business class, premium economy, etc. They could have boarded when the announcer called: "Any parents with young children or those in need of extra time to board, please come forward first." But they didn't. Tory's parents are telling her a powerful story about herself. They are teaching Tory that she is just like everyone else. Yes, she is a dwarf. Yes, she moves slower and is a lot smaller than everyone else. And yes, she is cute beyond belief. But, Tory's parents treat her like a normal kid. The story we live in front of our children tells them the truth of our lives and theirs. If we show and tell the positive stories, our kids will see the world as a positive place where they can interact and make a difference. If, on the other hand, we constantly comment on the negative state of the world, the problem with the neighbours, the unfair hand we've been dealt – our children will learn to be critical 8
