he other day I was reading a post on a forum, an anonymous guy wrote that he and his wife are earning a decent salary. However one day his son, who is only four, asked if they could take him to the zoo and had to keep it a secret from his younger sister, because he thought his parents would have to pay for one more ticket and they couldn't afford it. In the end they decided to take both kids to the zoo but only the wife got to go in order to save money. Personally I feel so sorry for the kids and I can't believe in this day and age there are still parents pretending to be poor in front of kids and think they are teaching a “valuable” lesson of saving money. I agree it is important to teach kids about money and budgeting when they are young. However confidence is also another important factor in terms of shaping a Childs' personality. Being confident in their life, material-wise or mentalitywise, as well as being loved and spoilt sometimes, is crucial to a happy childhood. As parents we may not be billionaires, but lots of us are trying our best to take our kids to play centres, sending them to music and tutoring schools, throwing them a birthday party, paying for private school tuition and so on. I believe most of you would agree with me that our kids' happiness would be the best investment outcome. At least please do not pretend to be poor in front of your kids when they are just four and two. Kirill and Rachel

Is Coding The New Literacy?

T

by David Cordover here's a child in my class whose favourite joke goes like this: “Hey Siri, what do you get when you divide 0 by 0?”

“Imagine that you have zero cookies,” says the robotic feminine voice from his iPad, to much laughter around him, “and you split them evenly among zero friends…” Kids these days are not just consuming technology, apps, games and devices at an overwhelming rate, they are also learning to explore and be playful with it, unleashing a creativity that hasn't been possible in previous generations. Part of this creativity involves the timehonoured childhood pursuit of breaking something to see if it can be put back together. And it's this re-building that we call “coding.” Coding is about building programs and interacting with computers. It's the way of telling technology how to respond following specific inputs. Understanding coding is the difference between someone who can use operate a program and the person who knows why it all works.

However there's a vital difference between consuming media and creating it, much as there is between reading a comic book and writing a story. There is passive absorption and there's experimental creation. Researchers have made similar distinctions, with MIT Professor Mitch Resnick stating that “Young people today have lots of experience… interacting with new technologies, but a lot less so of creating [or] expressing themselves with new technologies. It's almost as if they can read but not write.”

Teaching kids to ask these questions, and to give a space where they feel encouraged to explore the world behind the screen, is vital to their It's no wonder that coding is rapidly becoming a enjoyment and willingness to learn how to core part of curriculums worldwide, including code. There are plenty of online tutorials, here in Australia from 2017 as part of our Digital however learning has always been a social Technologies curriculum. Even US President activity and a hands-on class with specialist Obama, has urged Americans: “Don't just play teachers will be far more effective. on your phone—program it.” Without this new mode of literacy, there's a risk Most schools already have laptops or tablets, that children might be left behind as passive and it's almost a given that children will have consumers, not understanding how the world their own phones, computers at home and around them works – much like those from Siri's internet access at their fingertips. It would be punchline: with zero cookies and zero friends. fair to ask – do we really want to encourage David is the CEO of Kids Unlimited, a leading provider of Technology programs. There are currently two centres in spending more time glued to screens? Mount Waverley and Ormond VIC. www.kidsunlimited.com.au
