Turn up the heat on your décor with this sizzling trend If there is ever a month to embrace a tropical theme, August is it, and with the Rio Olympics this summer, this is a trend that has really taken off this year, with bright and vibrant colours taking over our homes, gardens and parties. Make your interiors sizzle with hot pink, orange, turquoise, yellow and green. Choose exotic leaf and floral prints, and add character with palm trees and pineapples, flamingoes and birds of paradise. Worried the vibrancy in your home might not work as well once summer has disappeared for another year? Tone it down by combining it with some warmer neutrals, and perhaps a deeper, mossy green, and choose more subdued, cooler versions of those hot exotic brights. The perfect trend to continue outside, this works really well in the garden for summer parties, creating your own little piece of paradise. String up colourful festoon lights and brightly decorated bunting and streamers, fill jars with flowers and treat yourself to some vibrantly coloured melamine tableware and paper napkins. And why not update your garden furniture with a spray of glossy, tropical-hued paint for a fresh new look? Lifestyle Editor

STYLE FILE Key things to consider... l Remember that while it is tempting to go all out with this

trend, you will need to live with it all year round. Add colour through accessories and areas that can be updated relatively easily with a coat of paint, or by swapping a reasonably priced set of curtains. Keep your furniture and flooring, or any other areas you plan to spend on, neutral so you can change the look for autumn/winter if you wish. You can always bring out your summer brights again this time next year. l Keep window dressings light and airy. Choose roller or Venetian blinds to add colour or pattern, and soften the look by teaming them with a floaty voile. l Flooring should be kept cool as well. Choose natural materials such as seagrass or coir, which work really well in rooms that connect with the outside, such as a conservatory, or in high-traffic areas such as hallways. If you want something more comfy underfoot then choose hard-flooring – lighter tones will keep the look fresh, while dark tones will had a touch of the exotic. Warm up hard floors with a large floral rug.
