Trend Alert... Make your home the perfect place to be…

hygge

Hygge has been taking the UK by storm this winter. Pronounced hue-gah, it’s a Danish word that describes a feeling of finding happiness and comfort in life’s simple pleasures. Whether that’s enjoying coffee and cake with friends, snuggling up in a warm living room, or sinking into a fresh and cosy bed. The key to creating this feeling is comfort. Think about materials – organic, natural materials such as wool, cashmere, linen, leather and wood; textures, such as knits, sheepskins and flannel, and colours that are calming and serene such as grey, taupe, brown and cream. Warmth is also important so cover hard floors with rugs, layer sofas and beds with throws and cushions, light the fire and add a subtle glow with low-level lighting and a collection of scented candles. Expert Tips ‘When your home has hygge the main emphasis is on how it feels, rather than how it looks… l Plants give life, and signal that this is a good place to be. Have a plant in your hallway to welcome you, and in your bathroom to replace the practical coldness with a feeling of hygge. l Hygge-light has a warm orange colour. Go for many small and warm light sources instead of overhead light. l Hygge is about your home being authentic and a picture of who you are. Hang up your favourite photos and surround yourself with the things you love and trust. l Make space to hygge around your house. A soft chair in the corner of the living room that invites you to sit down with a cup of tea, or a small table with a couple of chairs in the kitchen to keep the chef company. l Wool, cotton, linen and other natural materials have more hyggepotential than polyester, nylon and plastic. The great thing about organic materials is they have the ability to age well. How they carry the story of being used over time is the best example of bringing soul, authenticity, attachment and a sense of belonging – qualities closely attached to the phenomenon of hygge.’ Marie Tourell SØderberg, author of Hygge, The Danish Art of Happiness
