Trend Alert...

woodland

Give your home an autumnal woodland feel this season

This warm autumnal trend is perfect for bringing comfort into our homes, and it’s the colours, textures and materials used that combine to create this intense cosiness. Start by deciding on your colour palette. Do you want a warm scheme of mustard, rich red and burnt orange, combined with subtle grey? Or do you prefer a fresher look using mossy green, berry red and earthy tones? Whichever colours you decide on, the accessories you choose are key. The look should have an artisanal edge to it with handcrafted qualities such as hand-carved woods, patchwork quilts and lino and sponge prints. Textures should add to the warm and toasty feel – choose faux furs, felts, knits and soft natural wools, in tartans, checks and leafy prints. This look is also a little playful and eccentric, so add a few fun hedgerow characters such as foxes, rabbits, badgers, birds, hedgehogs and owls.

Take to the floor With a dizzying array of styles, shopping for a new floor can feel quite overwhelming. Whether you’re looking for wood, carpet, laminate or tiles, we have the whole lot covered to ease your choice

F

loors take up a lot of visual space and make a huge difference to the look of your room, so it’s important you get it right. It’s not every day you get to change the floor so we’ll walk you through the various types so you can choose wisely. You’ll need to decide which type of flooring suits your home, consider how you use the room and also factor in your budget carefully. Each type of flooring comes with its own advantages and disadvantages so you’ll need to weigh up your own aesthetic and practical considerations. Heavy traffic areas, such as hallways, will require a more hard-wearing floor that’ll stand up to constant use, whereas you’ll be able to get away with a more delicate floor in a bedroom. The colour and pattern scale of the flooring can be used to great effect, tricking the eye to make the room feel larger, or drawing the focus to a particular area.

DECORATING INSPIRATION

Carpet Carpet is the ideal choice if you’re after the ultimate in sheer comfort underfoot. It offers a softness that no other flooring has. Ideal for bedrooms and family rooms and anywhere you may like to spend a lot of time barefoot, it has an extra soft and cosy feel, provides a certain amount of sound-proofing as well as some insulation. Carpet comes in different textures, colours and patterns, each having their own qualities and performing differently. Looking after your carpet is important too, especially if you’re after lighter shades. ‘The right care and upkeep not only keeps carpets looking their best but it extends their lifespan too,’ says David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpets. ‘If you’re looking for an easy-to-care for carpet then choosing one that has easyclean properties is a must. Family-friendly fibres such as polypropylene are highly stain resistant and durable.’

What the experts say… Emma Hopkins, marketing manager at Crucial Trading, says: ‘Breathe life into a neutral space with a bold statement floor covering and accessorise with cushions and smaller trimmings in colours pulled from the flooring. Not only will the pattern add an interesting depth to the room, but it will also provide personality to a previously dull space. Stripes and chevrons are most popular for hallways and stairs as they are great for elongating and widening an area by creating an illusion of a larger space. Patterned carpets are also great at disguising stains and marks on the floor, which is especially useful in high footfall areas and close to the front door.’

Carousel Twist carpet, £14.99 per sq m, Carpetright

Don’t be afraid to choose a coloured carpet as it will instantly add personality to the room. Collect together some of your favourite carpet shades in samples and match it up with the walls for a dreamy feel in your bedroom

Call in as many samples as you can and lay them on your floor, looking at how your lighting may affect the colour. Also visit showrooms and see how each type feels to actually walk on. Finding the right flooring to meet all of your criteria will take a bit of time, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

It’s all about the spot with this fun, playful carpet. Try this out in smaller areas, like a home office or hallway, for an instantly uplifting feel Padstow Surf Spot carpet, £69.99 per sq m, Brintons

You can’t beat a soft carpet to cosy up a room. Choosing a neutral shade makes it easier to co-ordinate the room, making it feel light and spacious too. This range is made from 100% Luxelle Polypropylene and has an extra heavy domestic suitability Sensation Supreme in Brimstone, £28 per sq m, Cormar Carpets
