HOROSCOPES

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

STARSIGN OF THE MONTH

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

On more than one occasion in this merry month of March, you’ll find yourself asking – “Is this really me? Did I really say that? Did I really do that?” And the answer is “yes, indeed you did!” There is a new breeze of self-confidence and selfdetermination cascading into your life which lightens your load and brightens the vision of your own future. Good people travel with you, and those that don’t are the ones you can let go of.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APRIL

A twitchy month in which you’ll find it hard to relax or make any kind of major decisions. Little things will annoy you out of all proportion and care must be taken not to be too critical of other people and

their foibles. Some self-discipline may be needed when dealing with health issues. Personal appearance will become an issue, so cash is being splashed on new springtime wardrobes… and I don’t mean those big wooden boxes that sit in the corner of your bedroom!

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

A lifting of spirits with the first indications of spring after what has been a long winter. A sense of adventure pushes you to get out more and do things to enhance your social life. Maybe a moody few days around the 19th when bitter old memories come to the surface, but optimism is regained by the 23rd or 24th when despite a lazy approach to jobs and careers, there is some extra money to be made.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUNE

A good month for career and business advancement, especially on the 3rd, 13th, and 23rd, which in their own but different ways should

be “red letter” days… Or maybe someone is just sending you a final demand? Parent/child relationships seem to prosper at this time, and there are some nice romantic vibes for the young and young at heart. However, old and creaky relationships would benefit from a shot of oil, so maybe a weekend in Paris? Just to liven things up? A night out in Brid?

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JULY

Maybe a couple of awkward choices where relationships are concerned… do you, don’t you, should you, shouldn’t you??? Some sort of decision will be made before the 13th or 14th which puts romantic unions on a much more even keel for the rest of the month. From the 20th onwards you’ll be concentrating more on practical matters with a distinct change in some of your domestic routines. The money outlook is okay, but not fantastic.

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

In my cynical old age I no longer like the word “romance”, but as far as the majority of Leos are concerned, that is the predominant mood and emotion of the month of March. New relationships get off the ground, old established unions become stronger, and even parent/ child relationships seem to prosper. If there is any negativity it comes from your unwillingness to walk away from bad memories of your past. Let them go!

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT

Some tension on the job scene when increasingly you allow your pathway to be controlled by third parties, so there is a need to assert your independence and if you want something done properly, be prepared to do it yourself. Lots of support from lovers and partners in this, who will be very much on your wavelength and in tune with your own thoughts and ambitions.

12 ASTROLOGIST
James Christie
YORK LIFE STARSIGN OF THE MONTH

Lighthearted social events lead to some good money-making ideas.

LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT

The first ten days of the month is rather a stoppy/starty time… you will, you won’t, you can, you can’t, you should, you shouldn’t… you take two steps forwards then one step backward and another to the side… This confusing confection changes around the 11th or 12th when a more dynamic focus comes into play, and partly through the goodwill of other people close to you, the pace of life intensifies with a clearer direction.

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

It’s a “muddle through” month without any great highs or any low lows. In some ways, this could be frustrating, especially if you’re impatient for change, but in other ways, it gives you a calm breathing space in which to work out your options. Some minor changes to work routines around the 15th/16th with some major cash expenditures being planned for later in the year. Some loved-up vibes sneaking in around the 26th/27th so enjoy!

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC

A very domestic month in many different ways. DIY projects around the home, green-fingered gardeners getting ready for spring nights in front of the TV rather than the opera

at Covent Garden… But beneath this cloak of predictable stability, there is a longing for a tweak of excitement, a search for something to break the established routines of your domestic situation. It’s there for you if you look, but be careful what you wish for.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN

Expect some kind of clash or confrontation with a work colleague who blatantly takes advantage of your goodwill. This crops up quite early in the month, around the 5th or 6th but the effects are quite long-lasting. It may well be time to review your whole career/job profile and start looking for alternatives. On a brighter note, some personal ambition comes a lot closer to being achieved and if it costs a few quid, then it’s something you will have budgeted for.

AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB

Some potential domestic turmoil concerning children and younger people, and on a different level, this may be time for younger Aquarians to move on and fledge the nest. Money aspects are good for ambitious people who are prepared to bend the rules a bit, and the latter part of the month should be a delightful time for young female Aquarians who are looking for some excitement and romantic adventure.

WALKING WITH THE WANDERER

Marton cum Grafton

This walk offers a tour of the undulating farming countryside around the twin villages of Marton and Grafton. It includes a circuit of the hillocks around Grafton which provide long distance views.

Is this walk for me?

There are two sections where the route isn’t obvious and therefore is mildly challenging. Approaching the old A1 (see Direction Point 2), a lake blocks the original path. The official route after the wood (Direction Point 4) is also unclear. There are also cropped fields and several rudimentary stiles. Although undulating, there are only a few short climbs, some of these with steps.

Getting there

The recommended starting point is the small green in Marton. This is 16 miles from York via the A59 and B6265 then Gallabar and Reas lanes. An alternative is off the A168 at Rabbit Hill where there appears to be non-private parking on the abandoned carriageway of the old A1. Bus no. 22 runs to Marton cum Grafton six times daily from Piccadilly and the railway station taking about 50 minutes. The last return bus is at 16.58.

Refreshments

The Punchbowl pub/restaurant in Marton is open Wednesday to Sunday. Spellows shop nearby offers takeaway food and drinks. There’s also a café in the business park at Rabbit Hill (closed Sunday).

What to see

Marton and Grafton have an array of attractive buildings. The small hills between the villages have an interesting mix of woodland and open ground. The atmospheric abandoned cemetery (Direction Point 1) is a haven for wild flowers.

Marton cum Grafton

Time: 2 3/4 hours Distance: 6 1/4 miles

1. From the village green, take Church Lane. Pass the church and continue to a staggered crossroads. Go across down Legram Lane. In about 200 metres take the easily overlooked signed footpath on the right. Walk on the left edge of the cemetery to a gate hidden in the far left corner. Through this, go across the field to a gate opposite continuing beyond to another gate leading to a lane.

2. Turn left and continue for 500 metres until farm buildings at Mickledale Farm. Here, walk between buildings as indicated by a footpath sign on a telegraph pole, continuing between hedges to two gates. Go through the right hand gate to walk alongside the hedge. At the large open field, head straight across as signed aiming towards a higher fence post opposite. Clamber over the fence (broken stile) then head half right to the right corner of the field climbing the fence next to a gate. Continue in the same direction with the lake on the left. At the lake tip, curve left on an unclear route keeping near the slope top. Keep going to walk near the rear of the Rabbit Hill business park buildings using gates to cross fences. Soon after the buildings end, with a metal gate ahead, find a stile about ten metres before a prominent tree. Go over this and walk towards the kissing gate.

3. Turn left onto the abandoned A1 road for about 600 metres. Immediately

beyond concrete barriers, turn left on a track (‘Public Bridleway Only’). Keep ahead, soon passing a farm left then ignoring a bridleway turning right.

4. After about 1000 metres, where the track kinks left, take a signed footpath left (metal gate). Follow the track with a hedge right. Approaching the farm keep left with a hedge right and young trees left over grass to join the farm access track with barns to the right. Continue ahead on the track to a tarmac lane.

5. Turn right, passing buildings. Where the tarmac bends slightly left near the wood corner, take the narrow enclosed footpath right. Continue to the far end of the wood. Here, the official path heads straight on towards farm buildings ahead at which the route turns sharp left before the first buildings across the field. However, most walkers seem to turn left alongside the wood then right at the wood/hedge corner. Whichever route is taken, reach a prominent tree where a hedge gap gives access to a stile. Beyond this, follow the narrow path with a hedge/ditch left and fence right. Keep on through a dogleg to a track. Follow this to a road.

6. Cross the road and head down Reas Lane, opposite. Pass the school but at a red telephone box go right, then right again in a short distance. Almost immediately after this turn right into the

FLAMES

YORK LIFE 14

carpark of the Punchbowl. Walk across to a gate leading to steps. Go down these to another gate after which take the left path ascending further steps. Keep ahead at a cross path. Approaching the white obelisk (a trig point), climb the steps then descend more steps to keep ahead to reach an earth track. Turn left passing tennis courts.

7. Just before the houses, turn left off the track on a path through trees. Don’t ascend steps on the left, keeping ahead passing the back of houses to a wooden gate. Through this go over grass to the field corner stile. Do not cross, but head sharp left up the grassy

slope, then walk alongside the fence on the left. Continue to the rear of house gardens to a wooden gate leading to a road. Turn left uphill to the Punchbowl. Keep right passing Spellows shop to return to the start.

Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description, some changes may have occurred since publication. Neither the walk author nor Your Local Link can accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions.

Time Travel

THIS MONTH: MANSION HOUSE

This month we explore the beautiful York Mansion House, the first purpose-built mayoral home which is almost as old as ‘Great Britain’.

Take a wander down any of York’s streets and you are sure to spot an abundance of ancient and interesting architecture; striking Tudor buildings, enclosed medieval shops - even a Roman fortified tower. Hundreds of thousands of us annually march down Coney street with our shopping bags, and as the street opens up into the bustling St Helen's square, we are greeted by the magnificent and beautiful Mansion House.

It is instantly recognisable with its four cream columns set within red brickwork and classical early Georgian facade. This rather suavelooking building is the home of the Lord Mayor of York. The foundation stone was laid in 1725 and the house resided in since 1732. To put that into context, the Kingdoms of England and Scotland had only united 18 years early to form Great

Britain; and in the North American colonies (no USA yet), the British and their native American allies were in conflict with the French and their allies for control over Nova Scotia and New England. Who built it? Despite all its grandeur, it cannot be said for certain who the architect was. What we do know, is why it was built, and like an episode of Grand Designs, how much they underbudgeted!

The citizens of York appointed their first Lord Mayor in 1213, and for hundreds of years, this title was usually passed between major landowners and the aristocracy. One of the requirements of being the Lord Mayor was to entertain dignitaries and royals in their own homes. The ability to throw a decent 'knees up' and get folk

drunk still resonates in the city today - but in 1724, Lord Mayor Thomas Agar, a wool trader, decided either his gaff was not up to the job, or he did not fancy cleaning wine stains from the rugs! The need for a permanent house of residency for the Mayor of York to wow incoming guests and truly showcase the city became apparent. York was the first city to realise the importance of a mayoral home, something London did not achieve for another 20 years. Mansion House was restored in 1998 by York Civic Trust and received a further refurbishment in 2015 with money from the Heritage

Lottery fund, reopening in 2017. During these renovations, a number of items were found within the house and have been placed on display in the enticing name ‘The cabinet of curiosities’. Fortunately for us non-Lord Mayor folk, you don’t actually have to be sworn into office to take a look around! Even better for you guys reading this, being a York resident gets you 50% off entry and off the children’s little Lord Mayor trail (proof of address required). To find out more information about York Mansion House visit, www.mansionhouseyork.com.

We hear from our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson.

It's been yet another crazy month since we last spoke with all things York City. As I write this, we have just sacked David Webb as our manager. We won only one game with David Webb and as a manager, it felt like he was quite out of his depth. The football chairman, Glen Henderson, wanted better football and the displays have gone backwards and we look even closer to being relegated back to National League North.

Although it kicked off with such optimism, the season is starting to look very bleak. It is clear the players have no confidence in the management or the chairman, and that has been made clear by the fans too. The fact Henderson swore at supporters recently showed his inept attitude, and he is not up to the task of leading us into the future. Hopefully, the next time we speak, he will no longer be a part of this club and the process of a takeover grows closer and we put this sorry mess behind us.

Whoever takes over needs to listen to the fans, create togetherness and allow us to be able to simply compete in what is a challenging league to be in. I just hope the whole process won't be too late to save us from regional football once again, which looms ever prominently right now.

Most importantly the trust needs to step up and take ownership of

COLUMNIST Simon Pattinson

this situation. Do the right thing and correct the wrongdoings that got us in this mess in the first place. All York fans want is to have a normal week. It certainly feels too much to ask really. A new owner, and a new manager, who cares about the club and the future, are what is needed. Under John Askey, everything felt good. We knew where we stood and were behind him and the players. We were definitely overachieving this season before Askey was sacked, but I genuinely believe with a proper pre-season and being able to assess this side, his CV suggests he is, or now, was the man to help us long-term return to the football league. Some are against bringing him back but I, for one, would see it as a safe option.

Otherwise, some fans have mentioned Danny Cowley who, given his track record within non-league and in the football league too with Lincoln City, would make him an ideal candidate for City. Some may say he is out of reach, but considering jobs available at the moment are few and far between, it may be more of an option than you think. We can but only dream big if we can stay in this division. That right now has to be the key focus. I hope next time I speak with you there will be strides towards a better and bright future and no doubt a new manager. Fingers crossed.

THINKING OF BUYING AN OLD

THINKING OF BUYING AN OLD CAR?

Coffee connoisseur in the making? Check out these latest must-haves for your kitchen!

De’Longhi Dedica Arte | £249.99

Whether you’re planning for your first set of wheels, or you’re looking to trade your old car in, it’s always important to consider the basics when purchasing a second-hand car. The older a car gets, the higher the mileage (generally), and, the more likely problems will occur. Here are a few things you might want to consider to ensure you’re getting bang for your buck:

Look at the car’s history

Accessing the car’s MOT records through websites such as DVLA is a good place to start.

Read between the lines

Looking into a vehicle’s fullservice history is also very important when buying a used car for peace of mind. Read through the paperwork and if the service history looks okay and there are no major issues, you’re probably good to go. Take it out for a spin

If you can, get a test drive arranged. This way, you can take your time to get a feel for the vehicle and see if it’s suitable. Also, consider looking at the tyres - a set of matching tyres from a respected brand are often a sign of good maintenance.

If you’re an aspiring barista, or perhaps you’re just mad for authentic tasting coffee, this smart and compact espresso machine by the esteemed, Italian brand, De’Longhi is all you need. Compact in size, this stylish gadget sits smartly on your kitchen countertop. Calling all you bargain hunters!

WE HEAR FROM LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD

I don’t know how you guys feel about this current cost of living crisis but I am disappointed and dismayed about the fact that, as a country, we seem to have totally lost our ability to provide the most basic tools of a developed country; why is it that our own government is having to pay part of our energy bills and the companies providing that energy are making huge profits? Energy prices are extortionate across the board and even the meerkats can’t seem to help. But, it got me thinking about how can we at Herbert Todd’s help out the good people of York to weather this storm, here are a few ideas we are implementing right now: Firstly, we understand that when your freezer or washer breaks you need a new one and pronto so we are holding more stock of these key lines. Secondly, we are still offering FREE same-day (if ordered before 11am) or next-day delivery on most fridges, freezers, and fridge freezers. This is a critical emergency service that our national competitors either can’t offer at all or charge up to £50 for; because we are local we can work more efficiently which means a better and way cheaper service for you!

Thirdly we have been matching our competitors’ prices for some time – that means that across the whole store, you can be guaranteed the best prices on over 700 of the most popular home appliances on the UK market right now.

Fourth – we’re not just here to sell you stuff! That sounds odd I know coming from a

retail company

but we are as much (if not more) a customer service company – that not only means we are here for you for the life of your product but also, if you have (for some bizarre reason J) bought a product elsewhere we can still help you to get a repair on it that might save you having to shell out for a new machine. Lastly, we have signed up with the UK’s largest kitchen supplier to complement our German Kitchen supplier and offer you the absolute best value kitchen ranges money can buy. Offering a quality that surpasses the mass market offering of our national competitors you can see in our Monks Cross showroom pocket-friendly kitchens starting at £4500. For now, we are still offering a completely free-of-charge measure and design service so please let us know if you would like any more information to start your new kitchen journey on 01904 628676 or email to kitchens@htodd.co.uk.

It’s really important to do your research before you buy your new mattress, least of all because they can cost you an arm and a leg, but also because a poor mattress can deprive you of sleep and leave you with a few aches and pains too. Whether you sleep on your side, back or front, we’ve broken down the mattress basics below:

Side sleeper

According to dreams.co.uk, more than half of Britain’s population of adults are side sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper, it’s recommended that you aim for a mattress that is medium in firmness, or soft to cushion your main pressure points, which include your ears, shoulders, and hips.

Front sleepers

The alignment of the spine is the main focus for front sleepers, as when you sleep on your front, your back is at risk of arching unnaturally. For the best spinal support and comfort, choosing a medium to a firm mattress made from memory foam or pocket spring is highly recommended.

Back sleepers

For back sleepers, pressure points include your shoulders, bottom, heels, and back, so you’ll want to look for a medium to very firm mattress to support you. Pocket spring mattresses, in particular, provide suitable comfort for back sleepers and they generally provide support across the whole body.

March gardening jobs

As winter slowly comes to an end, avid gardeners will be ready to welcome the beautiful season of spring. Here are a few pointers for you to consider for your list to do outdoors this March:

HOE AS YOU GO

To prevent weeds from germinating rapidly, your veggie beds (if you have any) will need hoeing as soon as it starts to get a bit warmer.

DEADHEAD SPRING FLOWERS

Be sure to deadhead any

From bumblebees to hedgehogs, 1 in 7 of Yorkshire’s wildlife species are close to extinction or confinement. In a bid to protect our wildlife and aid its recovery, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is on the lookout for keen, nature-loving volunteers. Leading by example, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Community Champions will engage and inspire their local communities to make a difference for nature at home and in turn, encourage wildlife to thrive in the wider

remaining winter bedding and spring flowers, making sure they don’t set seed.

Too much

We all want to see wildlife in the garden but sometimes, especially if you grow fruit and vegetables that wildlife like to share, it can feel like there’s just too much. This is especially the case if your plot is visited by, or home to, those members of the animal kingdom with four legs. Larger fauna tends to have large appetites. In a rural area, deer and badgers can be the greediest. The former will eat almost anything and can only be excluded by expensive high fencing. The latter has a sweet tooth and a particular penchant for sweetcorn and carrots. Stopping badgers is difficult. All but the most secure defences will be bulldozed.

In more urban and suburban situations, it’s mostly smaller animals to watch out for. For me, the most troublesome four-legged interlopers are, in rough order of size, foxes, rabbits, squirrels, moles, rats, mice, and voles. There are also cats but apart from nipping off the foliage of young onions and leeks, it’s usually only their toileting and recreational rolling that cause problems.

Over the last few years, foxes have become frequent nocturnal visitors to my garden. Generally, they don’t eat anything. Instead,

they carry out seemingly pointless excavations that disturb newly sown or planted crops. Squirrels aren’t a serious issue for me. But then I’ve given up trying to grow nuts. Hazelnuts are stolen well before ripeness, while a neighbour’s walnut is regularly plundered. In autumn squirrels do nibble a few apples and pears but, on the whole, they’re usually too preoccupied with raiding bird feeders to bother with much else. At home, rabbits are rare visitors. Cats and dogs most likely keep them away. On some allotment sites, however, rabbits are the worse four-legged foe. Rabbits are fast breeders and voracious vegetable eaters. Apart from the foliage of potatoes and cucurbits (pumpkins, courgettes, etc.), there’s no vegetable they’ll not eat. The only effective countermeasure is fencing. This needs to be buried to prevent tunnelling and the wire must be 31mm gauge.

Unless you manicure a lawn, mole mining is usually tolerable. Their tunnelling can disturb plants, especially seedlings, but I usually only have occasional visitations. In contrast, rats and mice, and to a lesser extent voles, are everpresent. All will eat root vegetables

in winter, and worse still, rodents can get into stores, chewing through wood to sample every apple, pear, or potato in the quest for the tastiest.

When it comes to dealing with four-legged thieves and vandals, I’ve several approaches and none involve lethal measures. One approach is discouragement. This means, taking care not to entice rodents onto the plot by putting cooked food on compost heaps. Another approach, mostly used when problems become serious, is exclusion. This includes appropriate fencing, especially against rabbits should they appear in hordes. A further measure is to try and maintain an environment that encourages a mix and balance of wildlife. For instance, while foxes are a nuisance, they do help control rabbit and rodent numbers as, of course, do domestic cats. My final approach is to have a degree of tolerance and resignation. Fruit and vegetable gardens are, in effect, an irresistible larder for all manner of creatures including those with four legs and big appetites. Yes, sometimes there can seem to be too much wildlife, but some are better than none at all.

Whether swapping clothes, having fun with crafts, enjoying art and performance, listening to lectures or

discussing vital issues, there’s a great range. Practical, IT or financial assistance may be available to anyone wanting to join in. This is a community event pulled together by local volunteers. For more details, visit www.yorkwomen.org. uk or call 01904 702060.

HOME-START SUPPORT FOR MUMS-TO-BE

Home-Start York is an established charity offering family-focused, strengths-based support to parents with preschool children. Providing a unique, in-home, voluntary service, they fill a local community need by reaching families, who are finding parenting difficult due to environmental, physical, and emotional stresses. In April 2023 they launch an exciting new project which will provide practical and emotional support through weekly volunteer

visits, for mothers antenatally from 30+ weeks pregnant, up to their babies being around six months old. Trained volunteers will offer guidance and compassion to empower women to become the mothers, they want to be, resulting in happier mothers with positive birth preparation and stronger bonds with their babies. Positive intervention in early years can prevent issues from developing further and enables parents to feel confident to find their own way forward. Anyone wanting to find out more about how to get involved should contact 07519 976946 or visit www. homestartyork.org.

NEW CANCER CARE CENTRE OPENS ITS DOORS

Local charity, York Against Cancer, is delighted to announce that they have now opened the doors of their brand-new cancer support centre next to their gift shop at York Community Stadium in Huntington. The Leveson Centre, named after one of the charities co-founders, Professor Steve Leveson, has been created to offer a safe space for anyone affected by cancer to access support and advice. Located away from the hospital site, the centre will eventually provide a wide range of holistic services which will complement the clinical treatments provided at the hospital. For the time being the centre will be open on a daily drop-in basis welcoming cancer patients, friends,

and family members to pop in for a cuppa and a chat with the team.

Julie Russell, CEO of York Against Cancer commented: “The Leveson Centre will extend the support and care available for cancer patients from across York and the wider region. It will serve the people that need it long into the future as well as continue with our other vitally important services and research. Together we can make a difference!”

Since 1987, York Against Cancer has raised more than £20 million to make a difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer. The charity relies on donations, fundraising, and volunteers to enable investments in cancer care, research.

FOOD FOR OUR FURRY FRIENDS

The pet food bank is doing incredibly well thanks to the phenomenal support of the local community, but they are still requesting donations whenever possible. York Pet Foodbank is in need of supplies for all animals,

GOLDEN SLUMBERS

The month of March marks National Bed Month here in Yorkshire, and across the UK. This doesn’t quite mean bringing your duvet to work, however (sorry!)

Founded by the National Sleep Council and the National Bed Federation, the campaign was set up to promote the benefits of sleep and advise people how to get the best out of their slumber too.

The National Sleep Council and The Sleep Charity advise that it's important to look at the reasons why sleep is so important for our

health and also what part our beds play in getting a good sleep. For example, if your mattress is more than seven years, it’ll probably need replacing (you can find the perfect mattress according to your sleeping type on page 28!) Because we spend a lot of time in our beds, it’s also vital that our beds are kept clean. Be sure to give your bed frame a good old wipe down, vacuum your mattress and change your sheets regularly to make sure you’re getting the best from your bed.

Mickey Two-Face, Male, 5yrs

Mickey was straying for a long time before he was brought into Cats Protection by a kind member of the public who was concerned for his welfare. Mickey is a quieter lad and takes a little time to warm up to new people when he meets you for the first time, which is unsurprising really given his past but once he gets to know you, you’ll soon realise that he has a whole lot of love to give and very gooey soft centre! Mickey is the type of cat that often gets overlooked as he spends much of his time hiding away but all he needs is quieter home and understanding owners.

Muriel, Female, 5yrs

Muriel is a sweet little thing, she’s a very affectionate kitty cat and such a polite young lady! She loves a fuss and honestly, she has THE softest plush velvet fur it has to be seen to be believed. We can tell that Muriel has had a good life and has been well cared for prior to coming to us. This little one yearns to get her paws into a loving home where she has space to roam, people to love her, and enjoy getting back to doing the catty things she loved to do before. To enquire please contact Cats Protection York on 01904 760356 or via www.cats.org.uk/york.

If you think of your average gym class, we imagine you might picture dumbbells and a belter Olivia Newton-John music video. Whilst the benefits of a fun fitness class is pretty rewarding, what if there was a way to combine the rewards of fitness with the rewarding nature of voluntary action? Well, there is. If you enjoy the social aspect of fitness and want to get out and about, giving a helping hand within the community, you may want to check out GoodGym.

GoodGym is an initiative that originated down south in 2008 and has since spread nationwide. The project is made up of a group of local residents who run, walk, or cycle together to participate in local community projects across York, such as helping with DIY house jobs for the elderly or shovelling compost for a local community group. Every session is different!

If you fancy taking part in this fantastic initiative, visit https:// www.goodgym.org/v3/ areas/york/sessions for more information.

Spring

Lamb Cutlet with

potato and broccoli

fondant

A tasty recipe, perfect for springtime dining. Get your chops around this…

Ingredients:

4 lamb cutlets

1 pack broccoli

2 large potatoes

2 cloves of garlic

1 white onion

1 celery stick

1 large carrot

60g butter

150ml veg stock

Method: Start by trimming back any fat from the bone of the lamb, keeping all trim for the gravy later and pop your prepped lamb back in the fridge.

For the sauce: Roast the lamb trim in an oven at 200°c, allowing the lamb the brown off.

•In the meantime, roughly chop the carrot, celery, and onion. Smash the garlic clove and then add all to a medium-sized saucepan that is heated to a high heat (you want to get a golden colour to the vegetables).

•Add the roasted lamb trim to the pan with a splash of red wine to deglaze the bottom of the pan. Then, cover this with around 200ml of water just do it covers the vegetables and lamb.

•Leave to simmer and reduce for around 2-3 hours (aim to reduce the liquid by half). Once reduced, pass off the vegetables, making sure you keep the liquid.

•Place the liquid back into the pan on a low heat. Add corn flour to thicken (you can always use granulated gravy powders), thicken to your liking and remove the pan from the heat.

Serves 2

For the fondant potato: Start by peeling the potato. Then, chop off the round part of the longest side of the potato giving you two flat sides to work with.

•Take a ring cutter size of your choosing, place the potato flat-side down, and push the ring cutter down, making sure it goes through the potato cleanly (you can always clean up the edges with a peeler).

•Get a deep-sided oven-safe frying pan (if you don’t have an oven-safe pan you can always transfer it into an oven tray), get the pan to a high temperature, and aim to get a golden covering on the top and bottom of the potato.

•Once you have this, add the garlic and rosemary, allowing the butter to melt, and then add the vegetable stock. Then, place the pan into a 180•c oven for 20-25 minutes.

For the broccoli: Heat a saucepan with lightly salted water. Once the pan has reached a soft boil, add the broccoli for 3-5 minutes (you want to do this just before serving to avoid the broccoli from overcooking).

For the lamb: Heat a frying pan to a high heat with a splash of oil. Once the pan and oil are hot, gently place the lamb in the pan, allowing each side to get a lovely brown char to it, you will know the lamb is cooked when it is firm but had a light spring to it.

For plating: Grab your best dish and some artistic flair and plate up as you like.

The Jewels of Jordan

Proving to be one of 2023’s most popular destinations is Jordan. Famous for the rose-red city of Petra, there is so much else to see in this Hashemite Kingdom.

In 2019 I spent an amazing week exploring from the capital Amman to Aqaba by the Red Sea. Accessible in just over five hours by direct flight, my tour started in Amman where we spent two nights as a base from which we were able to explore Jerash, a wonderfully preserved GrecoRoman city and home to Hadrian’s Arch, the temples of Artemis and Zeus, and the colonnaded street, Cardo Maximus. I recommend you spend your evenings in Amman on Rainbow Street where you will find some great restaurant choices to sample local dishes including Shawarma, Fatteh, and Mansaf.

Whether as part of an escorted tour or with a private driver, as you head south towards Petra, visit Mount Nebo, one of the most revered holy sites of Jordan, where Moses is said to have stood and seen before him the Promised Land. As you reach Madaba, visit the Greek Orthodox Church of St George where you can see the mosaic map depicting the Holy Land. As you continue on the King’s Highway stop at the 12thcentury crusader fortress, Shobak. In the early evening, you arrive at Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

I was amazed by the sheer scale of Petra, from the famous Siq leading to the Treasury, we continued walking through the basin where locals sell local crafts to the steps to begin the climb of the 800 steps to the Monastery –

highly recommended.

I spent a brilliant afternoon at Wadi Rum, the setting for the film Lawrence of Arabia. We headed off in a jeep with the local Bedouin before returning to camp for dinner. Staying in one of the bubble camps is highly recommended and offers excellent stargazing opportunities. The perfect way to finish is with a few days of relaxing, either by the Red Sea in Aqaba or heading to the Dead Sea where you will be around 430 meters below sea level and can float in the salty waters. I travelled on a guided group tour with Insight Vacations and there are a number of different options available from a private tailormade itinerary to a small group tour. To discuss options give us a call at Savannah Travel on 01904 623444.
