Just lying down and listening music releases oxytocin. You know...that feel good tingly hormone you get after orgasming? That’s oxytocin. That’s why women in labor are encouraged to listen to soothing music. That’s why people having sex listen to soothing music. I don’t even really know what soothing music means. I keep thinking of the ‘90s R&B group PM Dawn. But I’m sure there are better examples.....like this playlist. The aftermath of V-Day is still lingering. You either broke up, hooked up, or spent some bonding QT with ya bey.

Whatever the case, let’s start a new month with some new music to drown in some slippery oxytocin. OnWARD!

Curious to know what a Renaissance Faire is? If you think it is going to be an event where you just learn historical facts about that era, you couldn’t be more wrong. It is a loud, fun filled, themed festival where you can expect to leave reality behind for a taste of early European performing arts, with a twist…. Renaissance Fairs encourage visitors to enter into the spirit of the things with costumes and audience participation. The event brings you back to a well emulated 16th Century English town filled with numerous village folk, beggars, merchants, gypsies, Lords and Ladies, jugglers and jesters; All decked out in traditional costumes and fluent in Elizabethan manner and speech. Be prepared to be transported to centuries ago with a celebration of years past (way past) and to be a part of the show. “I bid you merry folk from near and afar to come hither” And enjoy two days of live entertainment. That’s right, at a renaissance faire, everyone is on stage, including you; The magicians, jugglers, gypsies and jesters performing throughout the streets, will make sure of that. You will witness Knights reenacting medieval sword fights. Jousting Knights from History Channel’s “ Full Metal Jousting” will match. Magicians will awe you with their illusions. Pirates will make you laugh to their drunken

adventures. Jugglers and fire breathers will entertain you with their humorous acts and acrobatics. Gypsies will captivate you with belly dances. In addition to all the staged performances, the streets will be filled with crowds of actors impersonating historical figures, you’ll get to meet Their Majesties in person (well, in attire at least), followed by Her Majesty’s ladies in waiting and brave knights parading in all their splendor. Being a festival of commercial nature, between the stages you will find many “shoppes” (stores) where merchants will have a display of all their handcrafts. You can purchase a multitude of things at the Faire, from fantasy inspired and historical clothing to handmade jewelry, books, medieval weapons, artwork and plenty of other interesting objects. Don’t forget to check out all the exotic animals and rides, children’s favorite corner. But that’s not all; you can enjoy the shows and other entertainment while gnawing on turkey legs and sipping on a pint of mead, among other good food and beverages available at the numerous stands. This has become a town tradition since 2001 when Steve Melei established the first Renaissance Faire in the Gulf Coast, and, a way to celebrate our heritage. The foundations of the Gulf Coast, with first what’s now our city, were built in the Renaissance era when in 1559 Tristan De Luna arrived from Spain by ship and formed a colony right here where we stand.

Pensacon: Article by Ali Roudabush Interviews by Anna Mohrbacher Photography by Evan Butts

a fandom for all

Pensacon 2015 took place during the weekend of February 27th through March 1, and the turnout was nothing shy of phenomenal. If you have yet to make it to Pensacola’s very own Con, you are indeed missing out, my friend. Don’t make the mistake of thinking there is nothing for you at Pensacon. If I was to describe the event to someone unfamiliar with cons, I may venture to call our own Pensacon a celebration of fandom and self-expression. This may seem like a stretch to some, but if you consider the fact that Pensacon celebrates TV, film, gaming, literature, and cosplay, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would not relate to the festivities. As the world mourned the loss of Leonard Nimoy on Friday, Star Trek fans flocked to the Crowne Plaza to hear Nichelle Nichols speak of her experiences as Uhura on the set of the original Star Trek. Nichols made it clear she would not be discussing her long time friend, Nimoy, as the news of his passing was too recent, although she issued a moving statement to fans. There could not be a more endearing way to celebrate the life of one of the most iconic actors of the past century, than to be completely surrounded by thousands of ‘Trekkies,’ many in full Star Fleet uniforms.

Pictured left: Nichelle Nichols at her panel discussion held at the Crowne Plaza on Friday. Nichols spoke of her time on the hit TV show, Star Trek and morned the loss of co-star Leonard Nimoy.

Saturday was indeed the largest turnout of the three-day event. Lines formed outside of the Bay Center long before the doors opened, and the arena reached capacity by 3 o’clock. This year at Pensacon, ‘Artists’ Alley’ was set up inside the main arena on the upper level, giving them full exposure to the masses that flowed through the arena. Artists’ Alley is a great opportunity for local and regional sequential artists as well as freelance artists to sell their work and network with visitors. With the tremendous crowds inside the arena seeking to peruse the various vendors, Pensacon staff had to filter swarms of attendees onto the floor. This year’s vendors included artists, crafters, Renaissance Faire and Steampunk vendors, celebrity guests, and the renowned 501st Legion, a Star Wars costuming enthusiasts’ and charity group who is acknowledged by Lucasfilms and whose presence can be seen at cons around the globe. The discussion panels took place at the Crowne Plaza, The Bay Center, and for the first time this year, at the Saenger Theatre. Each panel overflowed with attendees, and many were turned away as the panels reached room capacity. Despite the near claustrophobic environment and the long lines, the positive attitude of the attendees could not be soured. With discussion panels and events in constant motion, as well as fans making their own fun with cosplay games and photo opportunities, there was never a dull moment. Pictured below (left to right): Pensacon fans gather aboard a complimentary trolley that transported guests to and from The Pensacola Bay Center, The Crowne Plaza and the center of Downtown Pensacola to see panels at the Saenger Theatre and grab something to eat at one of the many Pensacola resturants; Pensacon fans were given the opportunity to meet with some of their favorite comic artists from across the country, buy artwork and see some of the artists in action.

Although Sunday’s attendance was not as great as Saturday, it was still a landmark day for the event. As the third and final day came to close, it was clear to promoters, vendors, and media outlets that Pensacon 2015 was a roaring success, far exceeding last year’s attendance of 11,000. The economical impact was estimated at 2 million dollars, an increase from Pensacon 2014’s 1.4 million.

Pictured above (from top to bottom): Sean Gunn discussing his time on Gilmore Girls and his recent role in Guardians of the Galaxy; The crew from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers; Mike Ensley, Pensacon Chairman, leading a panel with some of the stars from the hit TV show, Game of Thrones.

If you missed the event, don’t fret. Pensacon 2016 already shows great promise, with returning guest Peter Mayhew, or Chewbacca, as well as David Prowse, better known as Darth Vader. If the snowball effect that we’ve already seen continues, the annual event has nothing but potential to attract many more of the largest names in the industries of TV and film, as well as Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. As I said last year, I cannot wait to see what next year has in store. I feel confident in saying that anyone who has ever been a child can find a niche at Pensacon.

A series of interviews with Pensacon revelers

Where do I begin? I was so starstruck at this year! There were so many guests I have seen throughout my lifetime in some of my favorite shows and movies. I could hardly believe it when I heard that Pensacon 2015 would be attended by one of my personal heroes, rocker extraordinaire, Lita Ford. This lady can shred. As a child of the early 80’s, I spent many nights laying in bed with the covers pulled over my head in fear that Pinhead, Doug Bradley, was waiting for me in my closet. As I got older, I gained an adoration of Science Fiction by watching Star Trek, both TNG and the original, as well as Star Wars, so it is pretty exciting to see actors like Jeremy Bullock, Mirina Sirtis, Nichelle Nichols, and Julian Glover. In recent years, I have added American Horror Story and Game of Thrones to my list of favorite series. It was exciting to see Naomi Grossman, Finn Jones, and Gethin Anthony. -Ali Roudabush

Which guests were you most excited about? I was excited to have the opportunity to meet Sean Gunn. Though most people know him from the role in Guardians of the Galaxy, my fondest memories are from his time as Kirk on the Gilmore Girls. -Ashley Simmons

I didn’t get to meet any guests because I am suddenly struck by nerves but Sean Gunn smiled at me and my face turned bright red!!

 - Cleopatra Redbird

We met Doug Bradley and his girlfriend, Steph Sciullo, who is an amazing artist. -Shana Davis I was most excited about meet Tony Todd, I started watching films like Candyman with my great grandma when around five years old. -Jeremy Darby

Definitely the creators of mystery science theThis year I was most excited to meet Michael Biehn, because ater. I discovered the I am a huge fan of the original Terminator, and also Nichelle show years back and Nichols because she’s a science fiction legend. probably have watched -Michelle Rhodes every silly, boring movie that they have made Naomi Grossman!!!!!!!! I have become a hilarious. huge fan of the AHS series and being Colin Baker was the guest I was -Stevie Griffith able to see one of the stars, especially most excited about meeting. He is one of my favorites from season 2 and 4! the 6th doctor, need I say more? -Cyle Rogers -Ashley Connell

It is truly an incredible experience to see what goes on behind the scenes of such large events. From the people running around last minute to the opportunity to experience all of the issues that arise that the everyday event goer never even sees. You have the opportunity and privilege to meet incredibly talented and dedicated people who work super hard for this one weekend that brings together an entire community of people from across the country. The Pensacon staff is made up of outstanding people who have done wonders for our “small town” of Pensacola. -Ashley Simmons

Meeting all the cool people. From the attendees, to the artists, to the cosplayers, and to the celebs. -Ace Wheelie

What was the highlight of your PENSACON experience? I’m a major people watcher, and just seeing everyone in this comfortable judgment free atmosphere just being his or her awesome self ’s made me so happy. -Stevie Griffith

What was the highlight of your PENSACON experience?

I really enjoyed seeing true fans in character. -Daniel Samaroo

What wasn’t a highlight? I got over stage fright when I did the costume contest, a little girl came up to me and asked, timidly, “Are you real?...” Of course I had to say yes! So many kids saying “Its Ursula!” -Cyle Rogers

Salsa dancing with Walter Jones in the autograph room Sunday afternoon! -Michelle Rhodes

I think the highlight of my time at Pensacon was having a conversation with Eric Stolhanske and his wife Barbara Thursday night at the fish house. -Jeremy Darby

I really loved the Gambit and Rogue who were in the Cosplay Costume Contest. I also saw a couple dressed as the old man and boy from the movie Up which was spot on! They even built a house w/ real balloons! -Ace Wheelie

cha Whic r h a you cte cosp r fa rs w lay vor ere ite?

The Attack on Titan cosplay characters that I saw were pretty spot on to the show.

 - Cleopatra Redbird

There were two people that I saw who were dressed up as contestants from Legends of the Hidden Temple, which was an adventure game show for kids back in the early ‘90s. The guy had even made a replica of the temple idol! I was really jazzed to see that. -Michelle Rhodes

All of the people dressed up were amazing but there was a woman dressed as Psylocke from the X-Men comics who is one of my favorite mutants. -Cyle Rogers

I had so many favorite cosplays so it is hard to decide. The top ones though were Baymax and Hero, and the Weeping Angel. She was fantastic!!! -Ashley Connell

My favorite cosplay was definitely the little Luke Skywalker in the fighter jet suit. -Jeremy Darby

I really enjoyed the Star Trek panel, Garret Wang had the audience laughing the entire time we were there. -Jeremy Darby

As an artist I love all the comic panels. Even though I’m not a comic book artist I’m a digital artist and I couldn’t draw myself out of a paper bag their experiences and words of wisdom is universal to all artists. -Ace Wheelie

The costume contest was awesome. Baby Luke Skywalker (junior class) was my favorite. -Jon Jacob

My favorite panel was the Doctor Who panel on Saturday. I am a bit obsessed I know. -Ashley Connell

Toss up between the Game of Thrones panel and the Power Rangers mega panel. -Michelle Rhodes I enjoyed the Adams family panel, it reminded me of being a kid and getting to watch the show on nick at night. -Mary Degenhart

The two panels that I knew I could not miss, even in the behind the scenes craziness was Sean Gunn (of course!) and the Game of Thrones panel! Finn Jones, Gethin Anthony & Daniel Portman are truly outgoing gentlemen. -Ashley Simmons

I enjoyed the panels with Doug Bradley and Tony Todd. -Shana Davis

Which event/ panel was your favorite?

I picked up some prints from the comic book artists. -Ace Wheelie I did pick up a couple of Pusheen plushies and a picture of myself with Colin Baker. My boyfriend bought me a beautiful picture of Ariel as well. -Ashley Connell

Did you pick up any souvenirs?

I did pick up some souvenirs, Pensacolabowski koozies were a must have.

 - Cleopatra Redbird

Freakshow party at Seville Quarter, as well as the after party for the costume contest at McGuire’s. -Cyle Rogers

Pensacon after party at the crown plaza. I didn’t just attend any after parties, I -Jon Jacob got down at the Pensacon Rave!

 - Cleopatra Redbird

Did you attend any after parties?

My friends and I bar hopped Friday night and Saturday night. Our favorites were the Holo Deck at the Fish House and Mcguires. Of course, after party or not Mcguires is always a good place to go to. -Ashley Connell Yes! I went to the Star Trek party at the Fish House on Saturday night. -Michelle Rhodes

I definitely learned to appreciate space. With Pensacon growing they will only continue to outgrow the space available at the Civic Center. In the coming years, I can only hope that our city will recognize this space issue and that the attendees of the event do not penalize the organizers behind Pensacon for the issues that arise from such a growth from year to year. -Ashley Simmons

Did you learn anything?

I learned that Nichelle Nichols is probably one of the most gracious people on the planet and I will probably become even more of a Star Trek fan having met her. -Michelle Rhodes I realize now that to enjoy everything this particular con has to offer, you have to have a game I recently learned Tyler Bien is plan and you have to go for more producing his own movies, which than one day. I really wanted to I am very interested in checking go to the Cosplaying with Autism out. panel, but it conflicted with the -Jeremy Darby event I was primarily attending to see. -Shana Davis

Yes, I most certainly did learn something. I used to think that I was not into science fiction, fantasy, or comics enough to ever attend any Con. This year, even more than last year, I learned that Pensacon is a tremendously welcoming and positive event. I saw every age group represented as well as many levels of fandom. Honestly, once I realized just how many of the guests I recognized, I also learned I am a much bigger ‘nerd’ than I had ever thought. -Ali Roudabush

I learned that the community is much bigger than you would really think. -Cyle Rogers

Are you likely to come back next year? HECK YEAH! THANKS PENSACON!! -Stevie Griffith

Of Course! When I compare this years Pensacon to last year’s event, the growth is phenomenal. At this point, I couldn’t imagine missing a Pensacon. I have a feeling that it will only get better. -Ali Roudabush

Yes! I’m waiting for the tickets to go on sale so I can get them! -Cyle Rogers

Of course! -Ace Wheelie Absolutely! -Shana Davis

Most definitely! -Jon Jacob I will absolutely be at Pensacon next year!! -Ashley Connell

I would definitely go next year. Cant wait to see what next year has to offer! -Mary Degenhart

I have attended Pensacon both years now, and I keep looking forward to the next one.

 - Cleopatra Redbird

Definitely coming back next year, it’s only going to get bigger and better. -Jeremy Darby

I loved working with everyone! I will definitely be attending next year. -Ashley Simmons

Absolutely! I was very impreassed with this event. There were so many interesting guests and panels everywhere. This was my first time attending this and I will definitely be a part of it next year! -Daniel Samaroo

Here we are art lovers! Looking for some visual stimulation? Well, search no more. Let’s explore together what the Pensacola Museum of Art has to offer this time around. “Color in Freedom: Journey Along the Underground Railroad” by Joseph Holston The exposition of Joseph Holston’s work is entitled Color in Freedom: Journey along the Underground Railroad and is rich in paintings, etchings and drawings. Holston is a painter and a printmaker currently living in Maryland, whose work has been displayed from galleries to museums and even many universities. The University of Maryland hosts a very insightful commentary on this particular collection and can be seen at the University’s website. Holston’s collection is focused on a specific period of American History and embodies the emotions of that time. Color in Freedom: Journey along the Underground Railroad is a journey into the reality of American slavery and the Underground Railroad through the eyes of Holston. Four moments mark the rhythm of Holston’s visual journey: The Unknown World, Living in Bondage, The Journey of Escape, and the Color in Freedom. Holston narrates the journey from the safety of the homeland to slavery all the way to freedom. Embodiment of the ideals of freedom, this collection opens just at the end of February,

Black History Month, and is available for viewing until the 4th of April. Through the interpretation of Holston, this art exposition can also be seen as an opportunity and a tool to learn more and to have a deeper understanding of this particular moment in American History: a moment to meditate and have a deeper comprehension and an emotional connection where you can reflect upon history and ponder the future.

The inclined composition, the strong chromatic contrasts and the swirling lines add drama and strength to this poignant piece. The atmosphere of solemnity that comes across in the moment narrated is full of meaning. Some references to Biblical figures can be noted in this collection. A noticeable example would be Madonna and Child or even After Harriet and perhaps even the previously mentioned “Protection.”

Joseph Holston, Protection, mixed media, 2008. Image courtesy of the artist.

Stylized shapes of human figures say more than meets the eyes. In Protection of 2008, the images are solemn like icons that could be found in an antique Byzantine Church. The main image, a King embracing two others, in reality could symbolize a man, a King or a Saint. It is not certain. However, because the figure is “non-specific” it becomes more universal and therefore relatable. Evocative of a fatherly figure, this painting is the opening pieces of the collection, and represents the sense of security and the memories of the motherland. From here, the journey begins: stories of struggles and overcoming, pain and joy, dignity and strength. In Contemplation of Despair, the shock and desperation felt by this figure is unequivocal. The feeling is so strong that you cannot remain untouched by this piece.

Universal sentiments like motherhood, fatherhood, brotherhood and the solidarity that men can find throughout struggles remind us of that deep sense of a unified human family. As the trip of the underground road continues, and freedom is near; progressively the colors brighten up. From dark shades of blue and green to bright violets, pink, oranges, and gold tones. The atmosphere of the latest paintings becomes lighter and sometimes even turns into a festive, joyous, or relaxed moment. Throughout the collection, the more or less intense light of the moon or the sun set the emotional tone of what is happening in many paintings. The visual narrative has a beat and a rhythm that feels like music. Holston’s collection has the ability to create a bridge in time: images of a past reality reach out to us; in a dignified manner making us empathize throughout a flood of emotions. His pieces have a sober eloquence yet they are touching, poignant and emotionally charged. his pieces are assertive but not aggressive, intense but not overly dramatic. They have composure and dignity, yet get their message across. Those universalized men and women have a strong haunting presence.

“His work celebrates life in all its phases… And while one can see influences of European and modern masters in Holston’s oeuvre, his art is wholly autographic. In other words, when one sees a Holston one knows it’s a Holston.” Joseph Holston, Rhythem of Renewal, mixed media, 2008. Image courtesy of the artist.

“OBJECT: Sculptures, Prints, and Drawings” by Michael Boles of a sculptor” never leaves the scene. Born as preliminary “sketches” for his sculptures, his prints exist in their own visual rights.

Michael Boles, Queen of Hearts, artival ink-jet print, 2014. Image courtesy of the artist.

From February 20th to April 18th Michael Boles’ works will be at the PMA. The exposition includes a variegate display of Sculptures, Prints, and Drawings. Educator at the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts in Pensacola, sculptor Boles has been an active artist in the local and national scene. Boles’ works have collected numerous awards and range from sculptures to prints. The creations of Boles have a quality that is very unique. Even in his prints his “eye

Amongst Boles pieces are some very remarkable relief sculptures. Those beautiful pieces exist within the realm of two and three dimensions, however instead of portraying the illusion of reality, like a 2D painting would, they exist as “objects” and are real, just like a tangible 3D sculpture. I would define them as 2D sculptures; a paradox by nature or to put it in Boles words “abstract imaginary that falls somewhere between painting and sculpture.” The fascination that comes from looking at those art pieces is an experience not to be missed. The shapes and the textural differences within the same piece will entrap you and intrigue you. The wall supporting the piece integrates its own existence with the relief sculptures and becomes part of the dialogue. Depending on the possibilities of the environment met, the support becomes a more or less soft-spoken partner in the visual communication. His contemporary aesthetics are airy and refined. His palate color consists of delicate tones, and even when using bright red the tones are not violent, but simply stronger. Holston has a taste for the abstract, yet with some symbols and shapes that make it easily approachable and communicative. The dialogue is immediate, engaging and suggestive. The symbols open the dialogue right off the bat and the suggestive shapes make you wonder and get lost between recognizable forms and fantasies.

“Making abstract art can drive one crazy… It is a hard place to go… symbols such as hearts, flags, and human figures are important in my work as they keep me out of the abyss in some way. They provide me with boundaries that are not always obvious in life.” M. Boles

Fritz was commissioned to paint the granddaughters of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain. Thanks to those paintings she had a chance to meet the Queen that invited her to court. Her paintings are like postcards full of places, people and memories that meet you in a festive and happy atmosphere.

The palate color is generally warm and the feel is very festive: bright oranges and delicate blues. The oils of Fritz are sometimes treated almost as if they were watercolors. Her oils have a “watery” quality. Sometimes the grain of the canvas can be noted and the willingly untreated spaces are part of the composition just as much as any other part.

The joy that comes across in those paintings takes your attention. By looking, we are invited to share those memories as well. We can perceive that peculiar sense of happiness and relaxation that only a vacation can give. A place to unwind, rest and enjoy: that is the world of Fritz.

In Beautiful Spanish Senorita there is almost no paint applied to the lower right part of the canvas: the white part is the “naked canvas.” However that part still communicates with the rest of the composition. The dripping of colors comes from the top and aids in avoiding a total visual separation between two parts. The diagonal inclination of the fan visually, creates an interesting reference by interrupting the opposite diagonal (between finished and unfinished) and brings those two parts together.
