“She Inspires Me By Jane Croy
Over 20 years ago, I was an art teacher with the Shelby County School systems. I taught junior high art classes. It's often been said that if you can teach junior high, you can teach anything. So after 13 years of teaching kids, I began painting on my own becoming rather successful with the selling of my artwork in galleries in Naples, Florida and Chicago. Along the way, I opened my own art gallery in Memphis and raised two boys. Meanwhile, one of my junior high students, Lori Tooker grew up, went to college, got married and had two girls who have just left the nest. Seeking a teacher to return to her passion for painting she stumbled upon my classes. I had married and changed my name in the years since we had last seen each other so imagine her surprise when her NEW art teacher was none other than her OLD art teacher that had originally instilled her passion for art. Working together, Lori's talent began to shine and we both began passionately painting with palette knives. We have created quite a body of work and will be showcasing these pieces for the first time at the Cooper Young Festival. Known as "Gals with Knives" we are taking our passion to the next level with our shows, etsy site, and all the social media we can manage. The main thing is that we both find ourselves saying "she inspires me".

Put your make-up on. Get your nails done. Curl your hair. Run the extra mile. Keep it slim so they like you, do they like you? Get your sexy on, don't be shy, girl. Take it off. This is what you want, to belong, so they like you. Do you like you? You don't have to try so hard. You don't have to, give it all away. You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up. You don't have to change a single thing. You don't have to try, try, try, try. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXoZLPSw8U8 Selena Gomez – Who Says I wouldn't wanna be anybody else, yeah. You made me insecure, told me I wasn't good enough, But who are you to judge. When you're a diamond in the rough I'm sure you got some things You'd like to change about yourself. But when it comes to me I wouldn't want to be anybody else. Pink – Stupid Girls What happened to the dream of a girl president? She's dancin' in the video next to 50 Cent, they travel in packs of 2 or 3 with their itsy bitsy doggies and their teenie weenie tees. Where, oh where, have the smart people gone? Glee - I Feel Pretty/Unpretty I feel pretty, oh, so pretty. I feel pretty and witty, and bright. Never insecure until I met you, now I'm being stupid. I used to be so cute to me, just a little bit skinny. Why do I look to all these things to keep you happy? Maybe get rid of you and then I'll get back to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRaJkZ_Za3c Katy Perry -- Firework You don't have to feel like a waste of space. Laughter Lawyer: The Beauty of Resilience: A Timeless Accessory By Debra Norwood
MY FATHER-IN-LAW HAD A FAVORITE EXPRESSION WHEN THINGS WENT WRONG IN HIS LIFE. HE WOULD ALWAYS SAY: “YOU MIGHT AS WELL LAUGH AS CRY!” MY FATHER HAD A SIMILAR EPIGRAM HE WOULD OFTEN QUOTE WHEN THINGS GOT TOUGH: “LAUGH AND THE WORLD WILL LAUGH WITH YOU. CRY AND YOU CRY ALONE!” Both men were self-taught businessmen from opposite ends of the globe. My father owned an agricultural machinery distributorship in Latin America, and my father-in-law owned a junkyard in Memphis, Tennessee. Neither had much formal education, but both were considered knowledgeable. They worked from sun up to sun down; they were frugal; they were well liked by their peers. These men did not crumble in the face of disaster. My father lived through a bloody Colombian revolution and came to the United States as an immigrant. He later returned to South America to build a small business empire. My father-in-law left home at the age of 12 to search the railways of United States for a father who had abandoned his family. He hopped on trains and lived with hobos, following a trail for years that led him to Memphis, Tennessee. There he met another family that his father had left behind, and he decided to stay in Memphis to take care of everyone. He built an auto parts business that became, in its day, a household name in Memphis. Both of these men had to overcome terrible challenges at an early age. But when faced with defeat and demoralizing tragedy, they dusted themselves off, got up, and tried again. These men were, by all definitions of the word, resilient. And in a strange way, despite their differences in physical appearance, both men were considered attractive to others because they exuded confidence, optimism, and magnetism. What does it mean to be resilient? The Merriman-Webster online definition of resilience reads as follows: The ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens. The ability of something to return to its original shape after it has been pulled, stretched, pressed, bent, etc.

A full definition of resilience reads as follows: (1): the capacity of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress (2): an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change As an attorney, married to an attorney, having raised 7 children--3 of whom have special needs, and as caregiver to a bedridden mother suffering from Alzheimer's who lives at home with me, I know what it feels like to be “bent out of shape” by stress and how to bounce back again! My challenges help me to understand and to build upon the lessons learned by my father's and my father-in-law’s experiences in facing life’s vicissitudes. I am thankful for their examples in
finding humor and the ability to laugh even in the tough times. I believe resilience is innate in some because of those people’s genetic predispositions to remain positive, but I also know that optimism and humor can be taught. I train people under stress to become more cheerful and productive through positive activities interventions,

mindfulness, trust-building exercises and conflict-resolution skills. But in all cases, I advocate therapeutic laughter as the primary brain lubricant for better emotions! By sharing information about the Duchenne smile and teaching my clients principles of relaxation through breathing and laughter vocalizations, as well as the Good-Hearted Living Principles from the World Laughter Tour, these people literally learn to “map” their brains into a more positive mindset. In my coaching I have encountered individuals who are physically attractive yet have difficulties forming social bonds. With some mentoring in reframing their thinking, many of my clients experience a transformation that reflects itself from within. As they practice techniques to become more social and to experience more gratitude, kindness, flexibility and forgiveness, the internal changes in their psyche are reflected in these people’s exterior as well. Regardless of body type, skin tone, health conditions, or even what could be considered physical deformities, these people become more attractive to others! How is that? What does being resilient have to do with being attractive? When I speak of being attractive, I am not equating it to the “prettiness” that can artificially be created but of a quality of being that acts as a magnet to “attract” others to us. As social creatures, we are drawn to people who will not provide a threat to us emotionally or physically. Genuinely kind and cheerful people are beautiful to us. Indeed, the eye roves faces in crowds in search of “friends or foes” as a throwback to prehistorically ingrained survival instincts. One example of our ability to “zone in” is that a happy face among a crowd may sometimes be

detected even across the length of football field! Cheerfulness is a highly desirable trait in forming friendships and love relationships, as are the qualities of empathy and sympathy. A recent study on biologically wired genes and how oxytocin operates as a social glue demonstrated that complete strangers are, within seconds, capable of spotting individuals with a genetic disposition to empathy and sociable behavior. We are physically tuned in to seek out these people for survival of the species! Even if you weren’t born with an “empathy gene” or a “funny bone”, individuals can teach themselves to “mirror” others’ moods, acquire the ability to pick up on others’ feelings, and stop overemphasizing themselves in social settings. Learning to develop a sense of humor and feeling the freedom to laugh and engage in appropriate mirthful settings is a very important ability, a strong factor in emotional intelligence, and a valuable tool for forming lasting relationships. As a matter of fact, studies show that women are deeply attracted to men who can make them laugh! And conversely, nothing makes a man feel better than being able to make a woman smile…(well, almost nothing!) Emotions are “Catching” Without a doubt, emotions are contagious. In fact, researchers at Rice University are looking into chemo signals and have already concluded that we can communicate emotions through our sweat. Dutch psychologists took the premise one step further and have concluded that fear-induced sweat can bias or push others to feel fear. How powerful is that? Thus, we as human beings are constantly sending nonverbal signals to one another about our internal state of mind that others are subconsciously detecting. Consequently, negativity acts as a repellant to social engagement. Relationships crumble with “Donny Downers” and people who harbor bitterness and resentment all the time. Everyone abhors a “Negative Nancy” in the workplace, or truly in any setting! Note the cautionary stanza in this well-known poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox: Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone. For the sad old earth must borrow it's mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Indeed, human beings are constantly sending subconscious signals to one another about our internal states of mind, and others are detecting these signals and processing them. For this reason, no amount of make-up, nor fashion savvy or accessories can hide a cynical soul or a depressed and anxiety-riddled person. As these people unwittingly send confused messages about themselves ("I look good on the outside but I don’t feel good on the inside”), they don’t

understand why all their efforts to be hired, accepted by a social group, or included in family unit, organization, or workplace are rejected. I add a cautionary note that by speaking of resilience, humor and laughter, I am not refuting the fact that clinical depression and anxiety exist, and I do not believe in every case that as people often misstate, “laughter is the best medicine”. But resilience training using Good-Hearted Living™, daily meditations, and coaching or counseling based on the research by Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, can mitigate much of the behavior and rumination accompanying these conditions and aid in recovery. People can and do change for the better when they invest in emotional intelligence and resilience training, and as they grow in confidence and optimism, they draw others better to them. Resilient people have developed the ability to find meaning in social engagement and to cement positive relationships. They instinctively know that we are all dependent on one another for survival. As a result, common characteristics in resilient people include the ability to feel grateful and to practice forgiveness, which increases their potential for lasting relationships. It is no surprise then that these same characteristics helped them become leaders in their own spheres of influence. My father-in-law and my father drew others to them because people felt they could be trusted, and that they would feel better when they were around them. I would pose that their gumption, ability to find humor in challenges, and willingness to laugh in the face of adversity also allowed them to attract others to wish to be like them and enjoy life as they did.

Life Image – Giving Service
GIVING SERVICE TO OTHERS IS A FADING ART. Utah leads the United States of America in the number of people who volunteer. Over 40% of the people of Utah volunteer on a regular basis. Most of the states fall within a 20% -25% rate of their population that regularly volunteers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “By age, 35- to 44-yearolds were most likely to volunteer (30.6 percent). Volunteer rates were lowest among 20- to 24-yearolds (18.5 percent). For persons 45 years and over, the volunteer rate tapered off as age increased. Teens (16- to 19-year-olds) had a volunteer rate of 26.2 percent.”1 Benefits from volunteering range from extended life span, lessens the incidence of depression, heart problems are lower, and prevention of future health issues.2 Feeling good about doing something nice for someone else can change your outlook on your day, imagine if you did this every day! In those blank spaces, do something on your own, without thinking about what it is, just do it. If you are purposefully entering your day on those days that have a deed listed, that you will look for that opportunity to do that deed; your entire day is going to change. Wellness: Back to School Lunches
By Kally Efros
THERE ARE SOME SCARY CHANGES HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY. DISEASES AND BEHAVIOR DISORDERS, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN, ARE SHARPLY ON THE RISE. Type 2 diabetes, obesity, allergies, cancer, ADD/ADHD, and
depression are only the beginning. Many children, including college-aged students are having a harder time concentrating, studying, and remembering. I have worked with many college students who ran off to college only to get chronically ill with low energy in their first year. I was shocked to learn that some high schools have defibrillators because the students are having heart challenges. One underlying cause is what they are putting in their mouth to fuel their bodies. I can tell you from personal experience, when a family changes the way they eat, their health improves. Mentally and physically, students do better in school.

Imagine getting the car of your dream? Are you going to take care of it? Get the oil changed, regular maintenance? Good quality fuel? Makes sense, right? Well, what if I decided to go fill your gas tank with WATER? What would happen to your engine? It certainly wouldn’t last very long. It would kill the engine.
If you want your beautiful car to last and run well, you have to put the right kind of fuel in it. If you want your beautiful body to last, work well, and reduce your risk of disease, you have to put the right kind of fuel in it, as well. What is the right kind of fuel for you and your family? There seems to be an abundance of confusion and bad information on what, exactly healthy food is. In 2010, the government adopted new standards for eating well called: My Plate. It indicates that half of everything you eat in a day should be fruits and vegetables.
stockimages
Fruits What it is: Fruits contain seeds. Any fresh or frozen fruit is a good choice. With so much variety you’ll have no problems meeting the daily standard. Dried fruit may be a good choice if it doesn’t contain chemicals and sugar, they negate the benefits.

What fruit is NOT: Fruit snacks, commercially bottled juices, and canned fruit. These things are marketed as servings of fruit, but offer very little, if any nutrition and may even have adverse effects. Vegetables What it is: All the other fresh or frozen produce out there that doesn’t have seeds. What vegetables are NOT: Canned veggies, canned soups, French fries, potato chips or pizza. Yes, if you can believe it, Congress added language on tomato products so that pizza slices remain a vegetable in school lunches….seriously. Protein What it is: beef, poultry, seafood, legumes, eggs, nuts and seeds.
http://www.ChooseMyPlate.gov
What protein is NOT: over-processed meats, high in chemicals like sodium nitrate or MSG and fake meat-like or meat by-products that find their way into our food chain. Grains What it is: wheat, barley, oats, quinoa (technically a seed), rice (especially brown rice) and many more eaten in their whole state. What Grains are NOT: overly processed grain-like products. Due to lobbying, a Pop Tart has been actually classified as a whole grain – it is not. While many enjoy pasta, it doesn’t offer the benefits of a whole grain. Most bread doesn’t count – certainly not bleached white bread. Dairy Many countries around the world do not drink milk or consume dairy products and have a lower risk of osteoporosis than the United States. What it is: milk from a mammal and real milk products like cheese, yogurt, and kefir. What real dairy is NOT: Soy milk, nut milks (nuts fall under protein), processed cheese full of chemicals, low fat milk, sugar-flavored milk products, ice cream. Some of those may still be classified as dairy, but they don’t offer nutritional benefits. A mom recently wrote about her child’s ice cream sandwich that wouldn’t melt even after sitting outside all day. The manufacturer’s statement said that real dairy was too expensive to put in the ice cream sandwiches and the ingredients listed a bunch of chemicals. So What Do You Eat?

If your child eats at the cafeteria, teach them the need to make healthy food choices. Remember, that pizza slice being served by government standards counts as a vegetable – which it is not. If you choose to pack a lunch for your child, make it fun and healthy. Avoid chips and pre-packaged foods. If you have a picky eater, start slow. Even the pickiest of eaters will choose healthier meals as they notice they feel better. Healthy Lunch Snack Ideas • • •

Nuts and seeds; make it into a trail mix with a limited amount of dried fruit (remember added sugar negates the fruit benefits) and add a small amount of real dark chocolate chips. All fresh fruit in season. One of our standards is healthy peanut butter and apple. Salads: let kids make it themselves and dress it up with nuts and seeds, dried fruit, and chopped veggies. You can add a protein for a full meal. Store wet items, dressings and proteins separate until time to eat. Hummus is a delicious dip for vegetables. Hard boiled eggs travel well and are great on their own, on a sandwich or over a salad. One of my favorite lunches is a hardboiled egg, sliced tomatoes, and sliced avocado. Salad wraps rolled up in a whole grain tortilla. Fruit Salad with couscous or quinoa. Great on its own or add a protein on the side. Quiche (which can be made ahead of time) with broccoli and cheese or any combination you like. Cucumber sandwich sliced long-ways and scoop out the seeds. Then fill with tuna salad, egg salad or veggies. Rolled tacos on a whole grain tortilla loaded with fresh pico de gallo.
Here is the bottom line. We were not healthy and I sent my kids to school with heavily processed lunches. We had attention challenges, behavior issues, teachers who wanted my kids on medication for ADHD and I didn’t feel good either. I wised up and changed my diet. Wow!!! I felt great and couldn’t believe the change. So I started making changes in the family and feeding my kids better and the change was huge! We quickly experienced a dramatic decrease in sick days, no more uncontrolled bouncing off the walls and no more teachers wanting to medicate my kids. I have coached families through the process and seen the same changes. Kids want to feel better; they just have learned some bad habits. Getting Ready for School By Bruce McKinzie
With the new school year approaching, there are some things that need to be addressed in order to make this year as successful as possible. I know the stores are about to start their Back-to-School sales and that is always exciting. Keep in mind that the latest fashion trends can be distracting in the classroom. If I could offer any advice here, it would simply be... keep it simple. Comfortable clothes and shoes are vital in order to keep students focused on the challenging work ahead of them this year.
Check to see if the local stores have your school’s supply list. If not, check the school’s website and you will probably see it listed by grade level. As a veteran teacher, a 24 count crayon box is perfect, a box of colored pencils, scissors, ruler, plenty of notebook paper, some boxes of tissue for the classroom and some copy paper will get the students ready to hit the books. The Knowledge Tree
One of my biggest concerns at the beginning of the new school year is having a room full of sleepy children. They have probably had a very flexible night-time routine all summer. This is the time to begin setting new patterns. The children need plenty of rest in order for their brains to handle the stress load we put on them. Set a reasonable bedtime routine and stick with it. You will be doing the children a world of good if they know their limits. Begin setting aside a permanent study place away from distractions like radio and television. While music is beneficial to learning, many of today’s music styles do not allow the brain to focus on the work at hand, but rather the opposite. Make this study area accessible to you so that you can monitor their homework as they do it. This can be an important bonding experience for both you and the child. If they see that you are interested in their work, they might be more willing to push themselves a bit harder for your approval. Stress comes with the package. School is stressful on us all. Managing that stress is vital also. Sports, band, cheer-leading, dance, or any other outlet that can help relieve stress will make everyone happier as the year unfolds. Make it a point to meet the new teacher. As a teacher, I want to develop a relationship with my parents that will allow us to communicate whenever there is a problem, whether it might be grades or something that might have been misunderstood in class. I like to keep in touch through email, or a phone call before an issue blows out of proportion and needs to be addressed at a higher level.

5 Things Your Child's Teacher NEEDS to Know By An Elementary School Teacher IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! THE TIME TO MEET MY NEW CLASS. THIS IS ALWAYS AN EXCITING END TO MY SUMMER. I LOVE WHEN I GET TO MEET THE STUDENTS WHO WILL CONSUME MY THOUGHTS FOR THE NEXT 9 MONTHS FOR THE FIRST TIME. Each and every
one of them become a part of my life and I'm always anxious to see stockimages how they react when first walking into the classroom. I can learn a lot about the students in that first backto-school meeting; I can tell who will be quiet, who will be loud, who will be the "teacher pleaser", and who will give me a run for my money! I love each student instantly, and that feeling never depreciates, even long after they have left my classroom. I tell you this so that you know that teachers are invested in your children and their lives. I tell you this because I'm about to ask you to do something very uncomfortable. I tell you this because your child's teacher wants to do what is best for your child, but that is impossible if the teacher isn't given all the information. There are 5 things that teachers NEED to know about their students. If any of these 5 things relate to your child's life, you need to let the teacher know. I am aware that some of these are not easy to tell and that they border on invading your privacy. But, know that each and every one of these situations affects your student and their ability to learn. Teachers know what to expect and how to handle each situation, but they cannot do this when they do not know what they are witnessing.
TEACHERS NEED TO KNOW: 1. Any change in their family dynamic: If you have had a divorce, a new marriage, a death, a birth, an adoption, a new boyfriend/girlfriend, any new addition or depletion from their family life please alert the teacher. All children deal with these changes differently and each of these changes is huge in the life of a child. I have watched gregarious children become quiet and withdrawn due to a new baby, or a quiet child become loud and obnoxious due to mom breaking up with a boyfriend.

Teachers Need to Know (Continued)

Vol. 1 Issue 4
2. Any change in their living situation: Moving to a new house and/or a new school is obviously something that will affect behavior in students and most parents are aware enough to let teachers know when this happens but, there are other changes that we don't hear that also can affect the student. These changes include; losing a home, living in a car or a shelter, moving in with relatives, relatives moving in with you, suddenly sharing a room with a sibling, suddenly getting their own room, relatives moving out, one Paul Goody parent leaving for a job, or a parent coming home. 3. Any health concerns: Parents are usually pretty good about this one, but please make a point to let the teacher know about allergies, anxiety disorders, any medication to be taken at school, seizures, ADHD or ADD, gluten free, sugar free, vegan, vegetarian, etc. Teachers need a heads up on these things in case anything were to happen during school. 4. Any social concerns: Teachers can usually pick up on social concerns pretty quickly, but to have prior knowledge about it certainly helps. It is always appreciated when parents tell me where on the autism spectrum their child is, or that their child has a difficult time making friends, or that their child shuts down when embarrassed, anything that effects the way a student behaves around other children. 5. Any academic concerns: Academic concerns include students who are struggling to read or do math to students who don't have any one to help with homework when they get home to students who have test anxiety. It is much easier as a teacher to know where to focus when helping a student when I know exactly the concern.

Remember that the teacher isn't there to judge you. The teacher wants to do what is best for your child and in order to do that, teachers need to know the whole story. Too many times has a student been labeled a "behavior problem" when in reality their behavior is a reaction to something in the student's life. When the teacher is privy to what is happening they are more able to help the student cope and behavior problems are nullified. Take the time to make the teacher part of your team.

Preparing the Student and Parent for College By Frances Fabian, Ph. D.
AS A COLLEGE PROFESSOR, I WILL TELL YOU NOW THAT THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL RECIPE , BUT I WILL SHARE A PIECE OF MY MIND FOR BOTH PARTICIPANTS IN THIS NEW ADVENTURE .
FIRST, STUDENTS, there is a very closely held secret about how to succeed in college. We professors try to keep it close to the chest because it's important for us to maintain that grade curve. So, you are fortunate to read this missive in this magazine and get a quick glimpse at this hidden wisdom: do all of your assignments, fully, to the best of your ability. Honestly, too many students believe they can miss a few things here and there and make it up later – we, as professors, see a gradebook line with blanks. Holes. Just for clarity, holes are never a good sign. Second, if you really do suffer from some setback that is reasonably forgivable, attempt contact with the professor-being. A few of us may be immovable cynics, but most of us want you to learn and to succeed. Really. You have to run the economy when I'm old, so I want you to learn. And succeed. What does that mean for your preparation for college? Well, it means you need to start being organized "all by yourself" at the earliest opportunity so that you do not discover your lack of organization --- or more often, self-discipline -- your first confusing day in a dorm. Oh, and don't forget to study and do the work. SECOND, PARENTS, the biggest issue I see are students that are absolutely directionless in college. Your job in their growing years is to help them identify a desire, and then help them to prepare to follow it. Where are all the engineers, for example? I wonder how many parents let our future engineers miss great careers, just because they did not jump in when their future engineer suffered under a poor math teacher, or failed to expose their future engineer to the array of work they could do –most young people only see engineers from TV Kate Rawlins Sims© stereotypes, (the ones who wear pocket protectors). In other words, most parents hope their children will find A u g u s t 2 0 1 4 | 38

themselves in college, but most students are not really lost, just undiscovered. Help them find their passion now, and then choose a college program that will allow them to master it. Also, (I may get chastised for saying this), but if your to-be student really does not know anything of what they want to do, there is NO PROBLEM with taking a year in some kind of program, or mission, or work – gap years are just fine. Gap years are better than dropping out.

Finally Fit Fitness into Your Lesson Plans with the Teachers’ Tone Up! by Catherine Basu, MEd
IF YOU ARE A TEACHER, THIS MONTH IS BITTERSWEET. WITH AUGUST, COMES THE END OF SUMMER VACATION AND THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR. You finally feel
rejuvenated and, for the most part, excited for your second “New Year’s” celebration of 2014, but you will miss having time for yourself. Once school starts, you know you’ll be back to putting the needs of everyone and their mom (literally!) ahead of yours. I know how this story goes all too well, because I used to be a classroom teacher. What do I do now? I’m back with my first love, fitness! Even though I’m out of the teaching game, I have a lot of respect and admiration for those of you still working hard every day in the classroom. And that’s exactly why I want to challenge you to take a stand for yourself this year by adding fitness into your lesson plans. Despite what your principal, department head, and school board might show you through their actions, making a commitment to taking time for YOU will actually make you a better, happier teacher. Incorporating fitness into your daily routine is one of the best ways to make you feel better from the inside out no matter what profession you’re in. If you’re like most teachers, fitting even a little fitness into your schedule might seem impossible. However, I assure you it can be done. You don’t need a gym, tons of space, hours of free time, or any fancy equipment to get started, either. You can start on your own, or if you want the help of a certified personal trainer and the support of your peers, I’d be honored to have you join my program, The Teachers’ Tone Up. What is the Teachers’ Tone Up, you ask? The Teachers’ Tone Up is my 8 Week Online Group Fitness Program JUST for teachers. When I was in the classroom, I spent a lot of time chatting with my peers at lunch, during hall duty, and anywhere else I could about how to sneak fitness into their busy schedules. Besides working with my students, this was my favorite part of teaching! When I left teaching to start my own fitness business, I knew I wanted to continue helping my teacher friends find fitness and so

the Teachers’ Tone Up was born. From start to finish the Teachers’ Tone Up has been designed with the life of a teacher in mind. Unlike other fitness professionals, I’ve been in your shoes and I know what you go through day in and day out. The program starts with a welcome packet that helps you get clear about why you’re on this mission and how you really can fit fitness into your day with the help of some fun activities. You’ll also get access to your private teachers only support group before we officially start so you can make some new teacher friends. Each week you’ll get a new fitness plan that features workouts that require minimal equipment and space. Your total daily fitness commitment will be around 30-45 minutes and I’ll post to the group to remind you of our planned workout to help hold you accountable. Even better? If you run into a SUPER crazy day (surprise IEP meeting, printer jams, etc.), I’m just an e-mail way to help you figure out how to get back on track if you can’t do the EXACT same workout that was planned or need help dividing it into smaller 10-15 min blocks that day. In addition to your weekly fitness plans and group support, you’ll also get a 1 week custom meal plan that matches your unique needs and goals. I know how all that running around makes you feel tired all the time and the not so healthy snacks in the teachers’ lounge are a tempting way to get a quick energy fix, only to have you crashing later in the day. I’ll help you find ways to counteract both issues and keep your energy high. Even though you’re a teacher now, if you’re like any of the teachers I’ve ever worked with you used to be your teacher’s pet. If you want to move to the front of the class and get specialized attention, I also offer a Teacher’s Pet Package that gets you one-on-one time with me and deluxe meal plans for the entire 8 weeks! Beyond learning how to take time for you this school year and adding fitness to your life, the Teachers’ Tone Up will give you the chance to make an even bigger impact on your students. I worked at four different schools from student

Besides the fact that I have a special place in my heart for teachers, I’ve also been there. I know you don’t have an unlimited budget so instead of paying $152 like my non teacher clients, you get your 8 week program for just $119. If you opt for a teacher’s pet plan, you get a private chat with me, two 1-on-1 Skype fitness sessions and deluxe meal planning (log everything you eat online and get feedback on how you’re doing based on your goals), a value of $468, for just $299

Don’t Break the Bank this Back-to-School Season
IT IS TIME FOR THE BACK-TOSCHOOL SEASON TO BEGIN. Ready or not it is time get those supplies-which seem to be doubling every year-, find the perfect Back-to-School clothes, and get pumped for another school year of tests, projects, and extracurricular activities. Teachers, parents, and students alike are searching for those perfect items to make the next school year just perfect and not break the bank. Here are some tips to help your budget during this time of year:
1. Tax Free Holiday: Check if your state offers a Back-toSchool Tax Free Holiday. Many states offer Tax Free Weekends where you can shop for School Supplies and will not have to pay state sales tax on certain items. Each state issues a different list of requirements for what is to be included in their Tax Free Weekend, although most states do include Clothing, School Supplies, Books, Computers and more. Tax Free Weekends usually start at 12:01am on the Friday and ends at 11:59pm that Sunday. 2. Start Early: Most schools will have their supply lists ready earlier than they show up in local grocery stores. Check with your school to see if you could get an early copy of their Supplies List for your student’s grade. If they do not have their lists ready, go with the basics. Crayons, colored pencils, pens/pencils, notebook paper, and binders are almost always on your supply lists. Avoid the crowds and spread your expenses out by starting your supply shopping now. 3. Get Organized: Know what you need before you go shopping. Do you already have some of the items at home? What do you have left over from last school year? Before going out and buying, check around the house for some of the items you may need. Make sure you do not already have a binder or an unused pack of notebook paper lying around. Then, make a list of what you still need and go from there. 4. Stick to the List: This is important, stick to the supply list. Do not buy what you do not need. If it is not on the list then your student does not

need it. Teachers make these lists based off of their lesson plan schedules and what they know will be needed throughout the school year. Trust the list; it is your friend, not your enemy-although it may seem like it at times. Also, if the list specifies a brand buy that brand, there is a reason for it. There is nothing worse than buying the wrong item and it not getting used than spending a few cents more for the correct item, which scenario did you just waste money? Remember, stick to the list and trust that the teacher knows what he/she needs in his/her classroom. 5. Shop Local: Local Teacher Supply/School Supply Stores Prepacked Kit for know how difficult it is for teachers and parents alike when Desoto County School - 1st Grade (MS) it comes to this time of year. Locally owned stores are members of your community and know what the schools are asking for. They price their school supplies with the knowledge that everyone is on a budget these days. It is also a one-stop-shop for all your school supply needs. Also, check with your school or local Teacher/School Supply store and see if they offer Prepacked School Supplies. Many schools and local Teacher/School Supply stores will team up to have all your supplies bundled together in a single box with special pricing.
With schools starting back up in the next couple of months, it is definitely time to start planning for the new school year. Be in the know when it comes to gathering your student’s school supplies this year. Take the stress out of Back-to-School budgeting and enjoy the final weeks of Summer Vacation. BREAKING THROUGH THE STUDENT LOAN BARRIER TO HOMEOWNERSHIP. By: Jo Garner, Mortgage Consultant Evolve Bank and Trust
Radio Talk Show Host on the Real Estate Mortgage Shoppe on News Radio AM 600 WREC and IHEART Radio www.MortgageLoansBlog.com 7-17-14
MELODY DROVE SLOWLY THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE SHE GREW UP AND CONTEMPLATED WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO OWN HER OWN HOME LIKE THE COZY HOUSE WHERE SHE GREW UP. At 29 years old she mistakenly
renjith krishnan
thought, with her college degree and a few years in the work force, she would be able to buy her own house. But student loans, a car loan and the price of food and gas kept eating away at her income, making it hard to see the way to grab onto this dream.
Listening to her older friends talk about the nightmare they experienced because they bought way too much house too soon and then lost it in the market crash, gave her the rationale she needed to keep renting—but the desire to own her own place and start building equity and wealth was scratching through the surface. She was determined to find a way to own a piece of America and start to build her nest egg just like her parents did. She reached for her cell phone. She would call that mortgage professional she had been hearing on the radio every Saturday and find the solution. The solutions for Melody were ready and available because she was about to connect with a real estate financing professional that knew how to rise to the student-debt challenge and use resources unknown to Melody and her generation of would-be first-time homebuyers. Student loan debt has been multiplying like a virus, infecting the real estate recovery and the economy at large, dampening the ability for young Americans to borrow to buy a home. The Federal Reserve Board recently reported that the percentage of homeownership was reduced twice as much for people saddled with student loan debt than those without student loan debt. Dave Stevens, Mortgage Bankers Association President pointed out, “Student loan debt trumps all other consumer debt. It’s going to have an extraordinary dampening effect on young people’s ability to borrow for a home, and that’s going to impact the housing market and the economy at large.”

Breaking Through the Student Loan Barrier (Continued)
How do lending professionals open the door for first-time homebuyers to own their own homes instead of throwing money into rent to pay for someone else’s properties? Since the biggest deterrent to homeownership seems to be the high balances and payments on students loans, the first place to start is with solutions to refinance or defer these student loans. If the imagerymajestic student borrower is still in school, but wants to buy house, then getting student loans deferred for over a year from the real estate closing date will allow the mortgage company to exclude the payments on the student loan debt, provided the student loan payments have been paid on time. Another solution offered by the lending industry, which many younger borrowers do not realize is available, are the many down payment assistance programs to help them get into their homes for very little money down if they pass certain requirements. Some down payment assistance programs allow the buyer to get into their home for zero or less than $1,000 down payment. Currently, other 100% loans like Veteran Administration home loans and USDA Rural Housing 100% loans are great for connecting them with a way to achieve homeownership without a hefty amount of upfront funds. Education is a great tool for helping prospective homebuyers in their 20’s and 30’s make smart choices on loan products and ways of owning real estate and retaining it. There are several HUD-approved homebuyer classes in cities and towns around the country that have a very effective training system for showing prospective homebuyers how to budget money, what loan products are available to first-time home buyers, preventative maintenance needing to be done on a house to keep at bay major repair expenses and a host of other helpful tips like when not to file an insurance claim. Real estate buying clubs can be helpful or special seminars provided by banks or other businesses can show a prospective home-buyer ways to qualify to buy a home rather than rent. For information about HUD-approved homebuyer classes in cities around the country, go to www.hud.gov. Cosigners are a good source of help in qualifying for a mortgage, but the homebuyer who will be occupying the property needs to have a plan and the means to make the house payments. A good example of this strategy is the college student who wants to own and live in a property near the college where they will be attending and needs a parent to cosign with him. Presumably, when this person gets

out of school, he (or she) will have a job making enough money to pay for the home without the parent’s help, or there is the option of selling the home. A few weeks after contacting her loan officer, Melody was able to switch from an apartment lease to having keys to her own, spacious home with a payment much less than the amount she was paying in rent. For Melody, the solution to reach homeownership was to consolidate her student loans to a very low payment plan, use Vichava Kiatying Angsulee a first-time homebuyer down payment assistance program in her area with a low interest rate from a government type home loan. Melody was acting on her philosophy that the way to start building wealth is, not to wait to buy real estate, but to buy real estate and wait.

“If College Is Not for Me‌Do I Still Have a Future?“ By Lee F. Cameron, Program Director, Best MindSet Initiative
With millions of college grads struggling to obtain mainstream employment, where does that leave the 7-8 million young adults not in post-secondary education and not working?
Without warning, it seems that the 21st century economy and commerce are moving in a direction that is leaving millions disheartened, disillusioned, and disgusted in the search for pathways out of poverty. This reality that the world has changed and will never be the same plays extremely hard on those who were striving for middle class status. The institutions with wealth and power that could neutralize what is happening are in fact either perpetuating a historic income gap, or are collapsing in government debt. So again, where does this leave the millions of aforementioned young adults? Obviously, without marketable and in-demand skills they will be denied the right to fully participate and reach their potential as contributing members of society. Today, this is the world regular people are commonly facing, a place we as a nation have never been before. In the past, the 20th century, there were major events we could say galvanized the US economy. Two of them, World War I and World War II, spurred heavy industrialization and technological advances to support their efforts. Then, there was the fevered productivity of the Baby Boomers, to build, build, and build the corporate infrastructure of America, to what we see today. The outcomes of these events were phenomenal, contributing to the economic power and job booms the US experienced in the latter A u g u s t 2 0 1 4 | 51

part of the century. But what events do we have now to drive even greater activity, to sustain economic viability in a world that has grown smaller? Best MindSet, an initiative for Advocating, Collaborating, and Innovating to re-democratize institutions in order to create opportunities for all, suggests turning to the very youth we are discussing here to trigger the next historic economic turning point: a 21st century economy that is spear-headed by millennials and the XYZ generations. In this radical change from the status quo, the potential of young adults would be transformed into actionable leadership. Even the ones for whom college is not a match can become leaders in this model. This initiative is a prospect for something better that may resonate with many of them. Why? Because it leverages the one industry platform that many millennials, in college or out of college, employed or jobless, are adept with—Internet Technology. Given the chance, our young adults can use their savvy and abilities with this platform to democratize the way we manufacture, buy, and sell products, creating an ecosystem where age, gender, race, education, job
history, past mistakes in judgment, or immaturity do not matter. By simply using the Internet Technology that has become a major part of their daily lives, these young adults can benefit from and change the “mindsets of their peers by creating a system of support and opportunity for those struggling to make a successful transition to adulthood. Social media platforms and network channels, with which they are extremely familiar, are to be used to impact this social and economic issue, and to influence on a large scale the mindset of people and how they fit into society as productive citizens. The Best Mindset Initiative counts on this: that if our young adults are trained to perform, and trained to resolve their career challenges, we can begin to close the income and social gaps for all.

If College is Not for Me (Continued)

To begin this transition, Best MindSet advocates that the young adult adopt the following Five-Point Strategic Plan: 1. Research – as it relates to going into debt for any course of study, whether college, vocational, or certification, the youth should investigate if the education/training is marketable, and will lead to a job in the current environment, before choosing the course of study. 2. Engage and Network – with organizations and people interested in similar issues, training, and careers to create collective impact. 3. Use Social Media – to share and reach out to their networks with the understanding that “Cause” Marketing and “Engage” Marketing are the new win-win in e-commerce. 4. Join Entrepreneurship Training Groups – that are currently developing, implementing, and launching new products and services. This is a sound way of learning, and possibly, earning income. 5. Support and Create Social Business Models – that produce both social and economic values and commercial revenue, reducing dependence on government and social service programs. The impetus behind this unprecedented approach is that the Best MindSet Initiative recognizes that in order to have an impact now and in the future of our young adults in transition, we must steer clear of these dangerous words, “We’re going to do things the way we have always done them”. Instead of spending resources on the traditional job building or training programs that did not work in the past and certainly will not work now, we need to invest that time, energy, and money into our youth in innovative ways that will turn this situation around. We need these resources redirected towards using Internet Technology to develop hybrid business models that produce both social and economic value and commercial revenue for the regular person. If we do not get this right, we will not just short-circuit America’s competitive potential; we will be dooming our children from ever achieving the American Dream as we have known it. This movement does not require one to march in the street, be exposed to the news media, nor put personal goals on hold. To find out more about Best MindSet and how you can join this effort, whether you are a youth, or someone concerned for the future of our youth, please visit, collaborate, and participate at www.BestMindSet.org.

Using Truth to Build Authentic Relationships by Shelley Page Baur
“IF ONLY I HAD KNOWN THIS YEARS AGO…” IS THE LAMENT I HAVE HEARD REPEATEDLY AS MY CLIENTS HAVE THE “AHA” MOMENT THAT SIGNIFIES NEW SELF-AWARENESS. They express their sincere desire to change how they communicate in order to create the relationships they really want. I am a woman on a Mission! Today, I want to spread the word as quickly and clearly as possible: Integrity-Based Communications is a simple, values-driven, behavior-based model that can simplify life, reduce stress, and improve the quality of relationships you really want in your life. After years of “living by default” – this is, experiencing results that I did not want to repeat, then eliminating what wasn’t working – I decided I would rather focus my time, energy and effort to attract what I really want in my life. And that required quite a bit of work: to become self-aware, to gain the clarity and clearly state what I really wanted. How freeing it was to understand the power of a made-up mind. My newfound clarity required no one to read my mind to know what I really want. In hindsight, I could see that I had personally made all of the communication mistakes that sabotage authentic, honest relationships. I have now re-cast “mistakes” as “high-growth learning opportunities”…and offer them to you as Integrity-Based Communications Axioms: Habits to Break.

Build Authentic Communications (Continued)

Vol. 1 Issue 4
Looking at the list of “Habits to Break,” did you find yourself nodding…or smiling…as you recognized some personal, self-sabotaging behavior? True, there may be important people in your life who continue to practice communicating in ways that do not promote healthy, happy relationships, but for now, let’s focus on YOU and what you really want. Enter the 6-behavior model of Integrity-Based Communications: Since “developing by default” and applying the principles of Integrity-Based Communications, I attracted the man of my dreams and built a successful business helping others realize their potential. In personal relationships with friends and family, my results over the past 20 years include the ability to talk about virtually everything – even those controversial topics like sex, politics and money – without bitter exchanges or arguing, much less losing a battle! The ease of discussing even religious and cultural differences becomes an opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from one another. Ultimately, this sort of open and honest dialogue can create a place of safety and trust, where “making meaning” of words can go beyond previously assumed, conditioned ways of being misunderstood. Taking personal risks, going deeper in discussing our goals, dreams, and passions, can help each of us discover that we are more alike one another than different, at the core of our values. When you practice these six behaviors consistently, you can produce more authentic friendships, positive exchanges with winning results for all parties, higher levels of energy, and lots less stress! Simple? Yes. Easy? Not necessarily, but it is your choice to make. I challenge you to see if this method of communicating helps you get what you really want, while helping others get what they really want! Many people have found this helpful to build better relationships that are more enduring and more meaningful. What will you do next? Please take some time to test and apply the six simple behaviors of IntegrityBased Communications for 21 days, consistently, and let me know the results. LinkedIn Company Pages Are the Equivalent of Business Pheromones By Jerrilynn B. Thomas
WHEN I FIRST SET UP MY LINKEDIN COMPANY PAGE, I HAD NO IDEA
WHAT TO DO WITH IT MUCH LESS HOW TO GET FOLLOWERS. There
were not any threads on my LinkedIn groups inviting members to post the link to their LinkedIn Company Pages. Getting likes on Facebook and followers on Twitter dominated the social media conversation. My page was stagnant until I read a post about the addition of LinkedIn Showcase Pages to LinkedIn Company Pages in November of last year. The timing was perfect because I was severely disillusioned with Facebook pages by then. It lit a fire under me to finally start utilizing my LinkedIn Company Page. I read blog posts about how other companies were utilizing LinkedIn Company Pages and getting business from them. It was a great conversation starter with my female business associates. It got them excited as well so we made a pact to begin working on our LinkedIn Company Pages. I sent a very simple message to my LinkedIn connections, “Please Follow My LinkedIn Company Page & I Will Promote Yours". The response was remarkable. Not only did they follow my LinkedIn Company Page, they reached out to discuss the collaborative marketing projects I was working on and asked how they could set up their own LinkedIn Company Page. I reconnected with people who I hadn't heard from in years and converted several of my connections into sponsors of my current collaborative marketing project, 2014 One Million Woman Link Up -- a movement to help 1,000,000 women monetize their LinkedIn membership by getting more followers for their LinkedIn Company Page. I am still getting responses months later from my connections who are just logging in to read their LinkedIn messages. Inviting your LinkedIn connections to follow your LinkedIn Company page can do the same for you. Please note that

probably one in ten, unless the bulk of your connections are social media experts, will be clueless about what a LinkedIn Company Page is. Most of the people who sent me the link to promote their LinkedIn Company Page, actually sent the link to their LinkedIn member profile. If your response is anything like mine, you will have a prolonged dialogue with your connections. There will be ample opportunities to discuss your business. OTHER WAYS TO USE LINKEDIN COMPANY PAGES TO START BUSINESS CONVERSATIONS Don't wait for someone to post a thread about following LinkedIn Company Pages. Set up a thread on the LinkedIn, Facebook, and G+ groups you are a member of. A lot of people are ready to ditch their Facebook pages. Show them that there is an alternative to them. You WILL get a lot personal responses that provide an opening to discuss your business. Moo Cards are running some great promotions for their business cards right now. Their micro size makes them the perfect "frame" for your LinkedIn Company Page URL. Pass out the cards at networking events and blow the minds of everyone when they find out that there is a new way for them to market to their LinkedIn connections. They are going to rush home to follow your page and set up their own. You will be the first person they contact to follow their LinkedIn Company Page thus providing you with and "in" to discuss doing business together.

Send a message to your mailing list inviting them to follow your LinkedIn Company Page. Ask them post the link to their LinkedIn Company Page so you can follow it. When they reach out to find out how to set up their own page, strike up a conversation about their business. Offer them a 10% discount to spark new sales. Convert your Facebook fans as well as the people in your G+ circles into followers of your LinkedIn Company Page. Offer to promote their LinkedIn Company Page in return so they can get followers too. Send a thank you to everyone who takes you up on your offer to spark dialogue with them. We are all on LinkedIn looking for an opening with our connections. LinkedIn Company Pages are your opening. They are the equivalent of business pheromones. Use them to your advantage. If you are one of the millions of LinkedIn members who are not familiar with LinkedIn Company Pages -- less than 2% of LinkedIn's 300,000,000 members have LinkedIn Company Pages -- read my previous post "FYI: Your LinkedIn Member Profile Is NOT Your LinkedIn Company Page" . GUIDE TO OUTDOOR COOKING By Steven Chambers

Vol. 1 Issue 4
DON’T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BARBECUING AND GRILLING? CAN’T TELL A DUTCH OVEN FROM YOUR SEVEN YEAR-OLD’S EASY BAKE OVEN? NOT TO FRET. THIS GUIDE WILL GET YOU STARTED DOWN THE PATH TO BECOMING KING OR QUEEN OF THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN. Grilling. Other than sticking hotdogs on a sharpened stick and holding them in the flames, grilling is the simplest method of outdoor cooking. Food is put on a metal grate directly over the heat, which can be from a gas flame, charcoal or a fire. If your food flakes easily (such as fish) you can put it in a pan or other container and put that on the grill. But that eliminates the charbroiled taste that makes grilling such a favorite. When choosing a grill, you have to give some thought to how crucial it is to be able to control the temperature. Cooking over a fire has a certain rustic charm but it’s almost impossible to regulate the amount of heat and hotspots are frequent. You can end up with one end of the steak rare to the point of being raw while the other end is well done. Charcoal offers more ability to control the heat. Each briquette gives off roughly the same amount of heat if they were started at the same time. You can space the briquettes evenly for a more uniform heat distribution. Gas grills offer the most temperature control. With a good enough (read: expensive enough) gas grill you have almost as precise control as your oven or stove. The downside is that gas grills are more expensive and, unless it’s a small one that only holds about four hamburgers, they aren’t portable. With grilling the flavor of the food comes primarily from the food itself, any spices you add, the charcoal and occasionally a marinade. Grilling cooks food over high heat quickly.
Barbecuing. In the West, the terms grilling and barbecuing are virtually synonymous. East of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon Line confusing the two is likely to get you run out of town on a rail. To purists, grilling is barely a step above a Neanderthal throwing a piece of raw warthog on the fire, plucking it out ten minutes later and eating it. Barbecuing, on the other hand, is an art form that requires years and a Zen-like dedication to master. Whereas grilling depends on high, dry heat to sear the food, barbecuing relies on lower, moister heat to slowly cook the food. Barbecuing is usually accomplished with secret sauces that have been refined over generations (or purchased from the local grocery store). Rather than using the direct heat of the gas flame or charcoal briquettes, a barbecue utilizes the indirect heat of smoke from a wood-fueled fire. The type of wood used has a great effect on the flavor of the food. Sauces are what differentiate barbecue styles in the United States. In North Carolina, vinegar serves as the main ingredient, with ketchup being added in increasing quantities the farther west one goes in the state. Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee lean toward a sweet tomato-based sauce. Alabama favors a white sauce that is a combination of mayonnaise and vinegar. Farther west in Kansas City folks prefer sweet, tangy and spicy sauces. While traditionalists would turn up their noses, you can barbecue over a grill if you keep the heat low enough and regularly baste the meat with the sauce as it cooks. If you’re using charcoal you must be

willing to spend hours by the grill constantly burning more briquettes down and replacing those that eventually die out. But the wood-fueled, smoke method has the same drawback.
Dutch ovens. A Dutch oven is a cast iron, thick-walled pot. The design was common in 17th-Century Europe but the Dutch method of making them was more advanced than the English system. Due to their popularity these pots became known as Dutch ovens. Today most Dutch ovens have three legs to keep the bottom from resting directly on the coals, a wire bail handle and a slightly concave, rimmed lid to allow coals to be placed on top as well as below. The thick cast iron walls make the oven heat more uniformly than thinner material, which greatly reduces hot spots. Dutch ovens are perhaps the most versatile of outdoor cooking methods. Food can be baked, fried, stewed, steamed or roasted. In the West Dutch oven cooking competitions are as hotly contested (pun intended) as barbecue cook-offs in the South. My first exposure to Dutch oven cooking came when I was about eight or nine years old. My family and that of my cousins went on a picnic. While we kids played my dad and my uncle built a fire and while the fire burned down they dug a hole about two feet deep. When they had a good bed of coals they shoveled about six inches of coal into the hole, put a leg of lamb in the Dutch oven, the Dutch oven on the bed of coals, more coals on top and then they filled the hole with dirt. A few hours later they dug the oven out and we had succulent lamb. Years later I asked my father how long the lamb had to cook. “About four beers” was his answer. With charcoal briquettes rather than coals from a fire you can more or less regulate the temperature in a Dutch oven. Putting nine coals underneath and 15 coals on top of a 12” Dutch oven produces a temperature close to 350 degrees, just right for baking. So there it is, our quick guide to outdoor cooking. There are literally hundreds of cookbooks available for any type of outdoor cooking you want. Don’t be shy; come on out, the food is fine.

WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY RUN AMOK. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. On one hand the media and marketers say you have to look just like this person who has an unreal daily life and, as a result, an unreal body. Then someone in an office says, “Oh, that model’s arms aren’t pleasingly long enough and her waist isn’t pleasingly small enough.” So, the graphic artist goes in and ‘corrects’ her flaws. Then, a teen-age girl picks up that magazine, compares herself to that ‘person’ in the photo and wonders why she doesn’t even look remotely like her; and so begins her quest to achieve the perfectly acceptable body shape. Then the 20-something new mother looks at the photo of the celebrity that just gave birth to twins, only 2 weeks ago and her body is perfect again; maybe even a bit better than before. She stares at her post pregnant body with the extra weight she gained and her still swollen uterus, and wonders what she did wrong during her pregnancy that she doesn’t look like that. Now we move on to the 40 – 50 something woman who is starting to gain weight during menopause and her hair is graying. She sees the model in the magazine that she knows is probably a bit older than her with firm arms; a body slimmer than it has ever been, and not a whisp of gray in her thick and luxurious hair. She now wonders what she is doing wrong that her hair is thinning, her waist is increasing, and she is losing the battle of fine lines around her neck and face. Now, on the other hand. We have the same media telling us, “Be yourself. Be who you are.” Even companies that are leading campaigns for real women. But, even these so-called real women, are still pleasingly perfect with slightly less makeup than the high fashion model. They are still usually thin, and have younger than their age genes. Their gray hair is voluminous and full of body. The best ad campaign I have seen traverse the social media world was the one where they made mannequins to match the bodies of several people who had lost limbs, were in wheelchairs, and had other physically challenging obstacles. That one was real.

My name is Serafina Perri, I am from Australia, my parents are Italian. I am a professional model. I have been modelling since I was fourteen years of age. I love what I do, my passion for the work drives me and I still like to work. I believe older models are in demand, and boomers want to see someone with whom they can relate. The trend is driven by the two trillion spending power of baby boomers born between 1946 -1964, who make up 26% of the population. I am happy with my biological age and with ageing gracefully. I am comfortable with who I am and where I am. I am conscious of my deportment and my behavior reflects my state of mind which is a positive attitude to life, I take time to look after myself. I have been training for eight years, four times a week, so my physical, mental and spiritual aspects are constructive and adequately looked after. I try to enjoy life and travel as much as I can. My two daughters are a great source of pride to me, I love them so much and I do look forward to being a ‘Nona’ one day. These days 50 is not old; you can still seduce, love, do sports, travel, enrich your culture and even start new things. My values are honest sincere and friendly.

What’s missing in all of this is the real element. The true person. The person that wakes up every morning to the alarm clock, struggles to choose what outfit to wear the 50th time, shakes out the very last drop of foundation to save as much money as possible, and then goes to a real job where she interacts with other real people. A female officer with a police department shared with me that they never had a dress code problem among those in the offices, whether they were policewomen or civilians, until the CSI franchise hit the small screen. Then, plunging necklines, tight pants, and many other inappropriate items made their way into the work day. These women were sane until they say a fictional character on television wear a blouse open to her belly with a white jacket and white skin tight pants with 4 inch heels to process a crime scene. On what planet is that real? So, where are the real women? They are everywhere! Each month we will spotlight a real woman. She can choose the clothes, they can be from a store to get that store some publicity, or they can be her own clothes. Our first real woman is Sera Finaperri, from Australia.

Cortese left a hint of her wild and fun color to show her personality, yet still give her the professionalism she felt she needed.

Cool Skin Tones
Hot Pink is best on cool skin tones. Warm skin tones must mix it with a warm color, not black, to make it work.
Black on black is best worn on cool skin tones. Warm skin tones would need to add gold jewelry or some other warm accent.
Beige or Taupe is very difficult for anyone but cool skin tones to wear. Warm skin tones must add warm colors to accent or they appear completely washed out.

Men’s Skin Care from France
Skin care for men is still a new market, in terms of how long there has been women’s skin care. Actually getting the men to use a skin care regimen should be on the instruction sheets. However, men would benefit from multi-function skin care from Etienne Raff Paris.
Etienne Raff Paris Skin Care has a men’s skin care that is simple, and basic. With just three products to address men’s skin care concerns the line is on its first step towards grabbing men’s attention.
Albizia julibrissin The Happiness Tree (Persian silk tree, pink silk tree, or Mimosa)
Using the extract of The Happiness Tree, or the Mimosa, known as the ‘herbal Prozac’, helps to alleviate anxiety and stress. Etienne Raff has garnered the herbal effects of the Mimosa, and the healing effects of the bark. Mimosa bark is used externally to heal boils and inflammation. With that ancient use, one can quickly see how it would benefit men for skin care. Razor bumps gone awry into ingrown hairs is the distinct skin care problem that men
have. The Energizing Face Gel for Men is used after shaving, and with its light, not quite musky and not quite flowery aroma, is perfect to double as skin care and after shave. The healing properties of the bark of the Albizia julibrissin is the ingredient that will have even the most ‘manly man’ use skin care. The Face Gel should be used daily, even if shaving is not done daily. For beards, gently massage around the beard line, including under the neck; anywhere that ingrown hairs or rashes may develop. The Anti-Wrinkle Eye Solution for Men, is one of the two eye treatments Etienne Raff has for men. Men have thicker skin under their eyes than women (and you thought it was just an expression!). For this reason, they have a separate eye treatment. This treatment also has the healing properties of the Albizia julibrissin, however, added to that is Darutoside. Darutoside is used most often in anti-stretch mark care. Now, it makes sense for it to be in an eye care solution, doesn’t it! The treatment can A u g u s t 2 0 1 4 | 81

also be used around the lips (especially for smokers). The other eye treatment is the Dark Circle Minimizing Serum for Men. Oh, the never ending want for fewer dark circles. Dark circles are caused by different reasons, the most common being simply that one has a blue undertone, or a ‘Cool Skin Tone’, or genetics. The other main reasons for dark circles are allergies or lack of sleep. Now, can this product remove any or all of these situations? Their website even says, “The dominant ingredients used in the formulation will naturally activate the elimination of pigments responsible for dark color and inflammation that cause under eye circles.” That dominant ingredient is Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone. Which is a derivative of the flavonoid Hesperidin, which is found in citrus fruits such as oranges or grapefruits. A flavonoid is, according to Wikipedia: Flavonoids are the most important plant pigments for flower coloration, producing yellow or red/blue pigmentation in petals designed to attract pollinator animals. Notice that for the plant it produces ‘yellow’ for the petal; hence this flavonoid comes from the orange or grapefruit. The Dark Circle Serum ‘s secondary ingredients work by filtering less blood flow through the capillaries and prevents leaking from below the eyes. The serum has its share of ‘peptides’, the key word for anti-aging/anti-wrinkle. The products are made in France. There are limited sales in Europe, the company has chosen to use North and South America as the jumping off point. January of 2014 was their launch. They have several on line vendors, or you can purchase from their website. Some salons have grasped the product line and are using them in the ‘back bar’ section; choosing to use them within their salon or spa treatments. The products are natural, so there is a shelf life. There are some natural preservatives from natural extracts. A beautiful line, with a soft fragrance, French reputation, and it works. That’s the makings of a successful venture.

Ample Style. Ample Fit. Bustees
Bustees makes fashionable and supportive clothing for the busty woman, so we hope to inspire her to be her best self. We are starting the brand with swimwear and summer separates for BusteeLadies that wear cup size D-K.
Allison Fegundes was 5’10” and a DD cup as a Freshman in High School. By the end of college she was an even 6’. Her frustrations with fashion started early, and came to an apex after she purchased a ‘Doors’ tee shirt while strolling along Venice Beach. When she returned home to try on her new treasure, she burst into tears as her bust-line caused the graphics on the shirt to stretch to the point that they tore. In her own words, “Well, Jim Morrison’s handsome, round face stretched across my boobs and looked more like Stewie Griffin’s football-shaped head. Also, the graphics stretched to the point of tearing. With that being the last straw that broke the bra-strap, Bustees was born.” Fegundes then was on a mission to find a way for women with ample bust measurements to no longer stare at the mirror and weep over clothes not fitting properly. Fegundes studied at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Los Angeles, and was beginning to think she needed to think more like an engineer, rather than a fashion designer. “I knew I had to make sure there was some support, like a bridge. We don’t want anything popping out under the pressure!”

Some of her research came from women that she met on walks, shopping trips, and concerts, anywhere people congregate. As she would notice a women that shared her same bra size, or larger, she simple walks up to them, “May I ask you something personal? What is your bra size?” Once she informs her random polling victims that she is researching for a line of clothing for large busted women, a look of relief falls across their face, and they immediately want to be updated on all of her pursuits. Noting that her guy friends are a bit jealous of her research techniques, she said that women like her have an instant bond due to their shared frustrations. She finds out from these random busty new friends what they want to see in their clothing and swim wear. Then, she takes that to the drawing board. She creates her designs herself, and has someone make the samples for her. Swimwear will be the start of the line, ‘Bustees’. Her e-commerce website has an instructional video on the blog page, so that women know how to measure themselves prior to ordering their product. She says that women should not go by their past experiences in size shopping, and follow her instructions and order accordingly. With a following in the thousands on Facebook, (many gained from her chance meetings on the street) she is ready to jump in with both feet. Her launch will be early July. The future holds performance wear for the gym, at the soonest Spring 2015. Followed by sportswear for work, cocktail dresses, and then finally a full twice a year collection. How about wedding dresses, one of the biggest frustrations among busty women, “Oh, that will be a big step, and not an easy one,” she laughs. Long before that venture, she hopes to have her flagship store open in Los Angeles, still with her website still servicing women all over the world. http://busteelady.com/ Photos by Bustees

Secrets of the Sea Found within the array of tentacles that cover the sea anemone are nematocysts, or micro-injectors, with a trapdoor-like opening. Inside the nematocyst capsule is a long, cylindrical tube. The tentacles are triggered by the slightest touch, setting off a cascade of events that result in the firing of micro-injectors, harpoon-like filaments into the hydrophilic surface of its prey. That is how the sea anemone evolved over 700 million years to survive in the sea.

Harnessing the Secret of the Sea for Skin Delivery
By Dr. Amir Toren THE SKIN IS A COMPLEX ORGAN, DESIGNED TO SERVE AS A BARRIER BETWEEN THE INNER AND THE OUTER ENVIRONMENTS. It effectively prevents passage of many foreign substances into the body. In order to deliver necessary ingredients into the skin (target area), this barrier function of the skin must be overcome selectively; however, it must not be so altered as to no longer protect the inner organism or continue to function as a barrier in the future. Delivery of cosmetic actives into their target in the skin has been for long a desirable and exciting challenge and a great unmet need. It is one of the most rapidly developing areas in the cosmetic market. For decades, consumers have been exposed to the claims of cosmetics companies promising more youthful, vibrant and healthier skin. Unfortunately, some of these claims are confusing. The use of appealing ads and products that don’t live up to their claims have left consumers puzzled. StarletDerma's breakthrough technology can be used as the basis for substantial and improved functional cosmetic products. The company has developed a unique technology and manufacturing process to cultivate sea anemones and

harvest their nematocysts, collagen-based capsules and formulate them into an enhancement gel that propels and enhances the epidermal delivery of numerous cosmetic actives. For centuries, people have been trying to harness nature’s creations to create life-changing cosmetic products. StarletDerma is carrying on the tradition of treatments inspired by nature with their innovative delivery platform “InoCyte”, sourced from the ancient sea anemone to enable the selective delivery of cosmetic actives into the skin. The phylum Cnidaria, comprising sea anemones, corals, jellyfish and hydra, is one of the most ancient multicellular phyla, dating back about 700 million years. It is characterized by stinging cells consisting of cnidocysts, microcapsules equipped with an injection system. The cnidocyst incorporates a tightly folded, inverted thin tubule, which upon activation is released at an ultrafast acceleration. The discharge is controlled by changes in osmotic balance. Large aggregates of poly-γ-glutamate are trapped within these microcapsules and serve as the internal “battery” of the system. Water flowing through the porous net wall of the activated microcapsule causes the aggregated poly-γ-glutamate to dissociate. This in turn increases the osmotic pressure to 150 bars, resulting in ejection of the tubule and continuous injection of the surrounding contents until the poly-γ-glutamate is fully swept out of the microcapsule. Accent This Fall's Fashion Trends With Vintage Costume Jewelry
And Make Your Outfits Pop – Without Breaking Your Budget By Melinda Lewis Photos edited by Darrel Chua
THIS YEAR’S FALL FASHION RUNWAYS WERE FILLED WITH STYLES ECHOING OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY – INCLUDING MORE JEWELRY ACCESSORIES THAN WE HAVE SEEN IN YEARS— REMINISCENT OF THE GLORY DAYS FOR COSTUME JEWELRY BACK IN THE 1960 S AND 1980S. Here are some guidelines for choosing vintage costume jewelry that •
make your style stand out
•
provide multiple uses
•
stay fashionable beyond this particular season at a discount from upscale fashion store prices.
As a lover of jewelry, I am excited with the prominent place jewelry had on this year’s fashion runways. This fall, the fashions feature over-sized collar necklaces, long lariats, and multi gold-plated chain layering, stacks of bracelets, Byzantine-style designs, large floral collars, tribal motifs and reflections of Deco inspired cuffs—offering endless opportunities for the fashionista to express her style beyond the clothing to the accessories. While many of us balk at the price tag associated with couture runway accessories, vintage costume jewelry provides a more affordable alternative to take advantage of the latest styles with exquisite craftsmanship and design. Vintage costume jewelry was often made with a quality that rivaled fine jewelry, while contemporary pieces are frequently made with cheap resin substitutes, light-weight metals, and thin plating. Even the ready-to-wear jewelry from some of the finest couture designers is now made using inexpensive resin stones, which simply cannot compare with the fabulous Austrian, German, and Japanese stones used in costume jewelry from the twentieth century. More often than not, vintage couture jewelry of the same brand is far superior to its contemporary counterpart. Dollar for dollar, investing is vintage jewelry will give you both an excellent experience of quality and longer-lasting wear, often at lower prices than present day pieces.

To find quality vintage pieces that reflect the styles seen on the runway, we offer a few suggestions and designer names to begin your search for the perfect fashion piece. Large oversized collar necklaces grabbed much of the attention for this year’s fall lineup, in a wide variety of shapes and motifs. It is relatively easy to find similar looks for this mode in vintage collections containing Monet, Napier, Les Bernard, Givenchy, Nina Ricci, and Ben Amun, (especially from the late ‘60s to early ‘70s styles). Lariats were featured by a number of designers for fall. Vintage lariats typically from the 1920s (and unusually unsigned) are fun and add an element of change from standard necklace lengths ranging up to 30 inches. Lariats average about 60 inches in total length and are adorned with a tassel or other decorative element at the bottom, which yields a bit of eye-catching movement. These pieces are known for the amazing art glass beads and handcrafted beadwork. This year, designers such as Dior featured earrings worn either as a pair or singly—pulling from Coco’s early signature rebel-desire to mock tradition. Chanel often wore mismatched earrings, finding it perfectly acceptable to have a bauble of one color on one ear and a different shade or style on the other. This year’s fashion calls for mixed or mis-matched earring styles, lengths, or colors—making a perfect occasion to wear that favorite earring that lost its mate years ago. The traditional Lagerfeld- style for Chanel-brand jewelry, represented this year with multiples of chains, can be easily adapted by purchasing heavy chains manufactured during the 1980s. Chains made during this period were “chunkier” with wider links that enhanced the bold look of the 1980s. These chain necklaces often featured textured links adding extra detail to the look; a perfect complement to large-size chunky pearl necklaces presented in the Chanel collections. A nice selection of chains and over-sized pearls should cost a fraction of what it would cost to wear Chanel, albeit with the same great look. Independent vintage costume dealers or those selling on Rubylane, Etsy or Ebay generally have a wide selection. Stacks of bracelets seen on the fall 2014 runways reflect the “Barbaric” jewelry of the late-1920s attributed to Nancy Cunard. This style was popularized by counterculture enthusiasts of the Flapper era. A search on eBay will also yield a plethora of vintage and contemporary designs. For the purist of this look, a reputable dealer selling vintage Bakelite will be your best resource as fakes abound. For interesting “embedded” pieces or fun hard-resin bangles, the endearing Iris Apfel has a fabulous retail collection, and the jewelry of Judith Hendler offers clean lines and geometric-shaped motifs. The Byzantine jewelry styles for fall 2014 by Dolce and Cabbana are no doubt a reflection of the ancient jewelry the name implies, but also reminiscent of jewelry from the 1980s. Rich tones of topaz, ruby and emerald encrust the runway jewels. A look back to jewelry tucked away from the 1980s will offer a bejeweling complement to this fall’s fashion. No matter what style you are attracted to this fall, vintage jewelry offers an additional option to complete your fall wardrobe. At the same time, it can lead to nostalgia, and recycling of already used resources not only to satisfy the fashion diva in you, but to be a part of “conscious” fashion embracing the mantra of “what’s old is new again.”

Our Hands For Hope
Simple tools creating modern designs. Handmade, Honestly Sourced, Ethically Fashionable By: Cinthya Rubio, Marketing and Communications Director @ Our Hands For Hope
Photos by Our Hands for Hope IF TRAVELING TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, PEOPLE TEND TO GOOGLE “TOP 10 THINGS TO SEE OR DO". If going to Peru that list would suggest visiting Machu Picchu, enjoying amazing food in Lima, flying over the Nazca Lines, or exploring the Amazon. Once travelers experience all these breathtaking sites in Peru and return home it would be hard for them to believe that the majestic place they just visited has people living in extreme poverty. When members from Project New Hope International visited Peru, their eyes were open to a different reality. Moving away from the city lights of Lima and the enchanting Cusco ruins, they visited places like Trujillo. Despite the lovely town center and beautiful hotels set up for tourist, they only needed to travel 15 kilometers away to witness “La Esperanza”, a barrio known for being the most unsafe area in northern Peru. The presence of poverty, lack of jobs, and high numbers of single mothers made the Project New Hope Members wonder how these families had come to live in such circumstances. Within the last twenty years Peru has gone through some major changes. The political arena has left many scars upon this country; the memories of corrupt politicians and guerrilla groups that terrorized the people for years still come to mind. These rebel groups along with a corrupt government have now been linked to thousands of deaths and disappearances over the last 20 years. As a result families have been torn apart. Women have been moving out of the highlands into the cities looking for a better life for their children and themselves. When they arrive they are met with a lack of housing, money, and employment. The barrios, shanty towns, become their neighborhood. If they are fortunate enough to find any employment they have to

travel miles out of the area to work, leaving their children behind. Unlike many nonprofit organizations, Project New Hope International knew that collecting donations to then invest in these areas to give handouts to those in need would not suffice to create a permanent change. Instead they partnered with an international Non-Governmental Organization, Creation Peru, to offer extensive training in cultural textile arts, such as crochet, knit, macramÊ, horquilla, crewel, and embroidery. These two organizations knew that in order to help the people of the barrios of Trujillo, it would be necessary to empower them and strengthen their abilities in order to create a sustainable practice that will have long term effects. Our Hands For Hope, a for profit socially responsible company, was then created here in the US to establish partnerships with the women that received the training offered. The main company goal is to create sustainable incomes to better the lives of impoverished women by the means of business and design mentorship to bring their products up to par with standards and trends, along with distribution, marketing, and a platform to introduce their products to the international market. Basically our structure and goal is to never give handouts-all wages are earned, because we aim to empower these women, always with hope and dignity. With the women of Trujillo, we have created a fashion line using luxurious Alpaca Yarn and silky Pima Cotton that Peru has to offer. Our artisans make each item with high quality standards in mind, but most importantly with love. By combining the exceptional technique of the artisans with the designs created by the owner and head designer of the company, Terisa Brooks-Huddleston, we have been able to forge an apparel line that caters to a discerning clientele that wants unique crafted items. We launch both Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter lines each year and have been fortunate enough to be able to showcase our items in 45 stores and boutiques spread across six US states and Canada as well as on our website http://www.OurHandsForHope.com. We have been able to combine the best of the fashion world and the socially responsible world‌ now you can look great and feel great knowing that what you are wearing is helping change the life of a woman, her children and her community. Help us continue this great adventure by purchasing one of our beautiful fashion accessories and by sharing our story with your friends and family. We initially set out to reach the women in Peru, but with the success we have experienced, we have now been invited to take our sustainable business model into other countries. This next year we are excited to bring to our customers an extended line of artisan products from India, Cambodia and Sumatra.

Gift Share Love
Apps are being developed almost daily. They are the new part of our lives that is supposed to make things easier for us. Wedding registries have been around since the beginning of the department store. Those high end stores ruled the wedding registry world with the Brides’ china patterns, her crystal choices, her silver patterns and her linen colors.
Then mainstream stores and specialized stores stepped into the wedding registry, and the friends and family could economically and sensibly help outfit the new home. Baby registries were next. Now it was easy to know cloth or disposable, bottle or breast, Winnie the Pooh or Mickey Mouse. Personally, I like registries. It makes it so much more fun. You aren’t second guessing or trying to make sure that you purchased at a store that has a good return policy. Or get your mind wrapped around the idea that your gift just might be returned or re-gifted. Along comes the internet and the possibilities are endless. Marcela Smith decided this was a system to be used to help to centralize gift registries. And, Gift Share Love was born. A wish list ready and available for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or just because. Gift Share Love is an app for I-Phones, I-Pads, and on the website (the website is in beta mode currently, however, by the end of August they plan for it to be live.). Simply download the app, or upload the clip widget to your bookmark bar. When you find an item on a website you like, you add it to the list via the clip widget. It is one of the easiest things to do. You can have your children’s sizes in a protected area that only you and grandparents can enter. You can list your favorite foods—I put Godiva Milk Chocolate Almond bars and Sees Milk Chocolate bars on my list; so, now no one will bring me assorted chocolates as a hostess gift. Now that is just a silly reason, but if someone in your home cannot have nuts or gluten you simply choose the items that can be consumed safely, and the sweet thank you gift is happy and fun; not fake smile until I can throw it away or give it to someone else. And it wouldn’t really be a fake smile because it really is the thought that counts…but, being on the giver end, I never want my gift to be unwanted, unneeded, or even a health hazard. With the layout of the app, husbands and boyfriends do not have to wonder if they choose the right color or size. Haven’t we all been the person or with this person, “Ma’am, would you try this on? You

are about the same size as my wife.” My Mom smiled and put it on for him. True story! Or---I was at the game wall in a toy store; a man was holding the Pretty Pretty Princess game with a puzzled look on his face. I asked, “How old is she?” He laughed, “Four.” I said, “Perfect, my daughter had that very game at that age and she loved it.” He smiled and smothered me with thanks. With Gift Share Love, these men, and many others like them, would have known exactly what was needed. The security level of the app as compared to others is what sets it apart. You have ‘Buddies’, those who can see only the list you allow them to see. This isn’t a social network where he who has the most friends wins. This is a program set up for you and a select few others. You can make one list for everyone invited to the wedding to see, and one list only for children to see. The easiest part of the app is that with one click, the person searching your list goes directly to the product on the store’s website. A purchase is just a moment away. Or, click on the product while in the store, and the sales associate can direct you to it, then to the cash register. Gift Share Love does have affiliate stores, but the user is not limited to those stores listed on the site. Obviously, they would love for you to shop in those stores, but you are not limited to those stores. The app is free. If you would like to become an affiliate store, please contact Marcela Smith, marcelasmith@me.com .

“Watch Me” Attitude Takes Anna Kaelin from Paralysis to American Idol By Sherry O’Connor

Your True Colours
Vol. 1 Issue 4
COUNTRY MUSIC PERFORMER ANNA KAELIN GREW UP IN A MUSICAL FAMILY AND LEARNED EARLY THAT MUSIC CAN GET YOU THROUGH TOUGH TIMES. Life has given her reasons to quit when most people would have said “that’s it – no more”, but not Anna. She is motivated by her music career and is not about to give it up!
During her first 16 years of life, Anna had learned to play the piano, bass, and cello. Music was her life. When a car accident took the use of her left arm and the doctor told her she it would remain totally paralyzed, Anna used what she calls her stubborn “watch me” attitude and used her musical training as therapy. She re-learned the piano and has gone on to learn guitar, violin and mandolin even though to this day she still only has 30% feeling in her left arm. Appearing on Season Eight of American Idol was an incredible experience. There are all walks of life there – some beginners, some with music careers trying to move it forward and some who have already made it and she learned something from all of them. She made musical friends, learned about the industry and gained exposure to thing you don’t see in everyday music life. She even found strength in getting cut from the show. Anna realized most people would quit, but she had other plans and was determined to use this experience to move forward and do what she loves. She returned to American Idol for Season 11 and Season 13 and everything connected with the experience is positive and motivating. While music had been a major part of her life all along, the career actually started at age 19 when she moved to Nashville to see if music was truly her passion or just a hobby. I take it passion won, as she is still there writing and performing around Nashville. She was on tour last summer and is presently working on her upcoming CD. Although she does write much of her own music, her love is being on stage and she prefers to leave the writing to the many talented writers around Nashville. Through it all, Anna has maintained that deep connection with music and that’s what keeps her going. She wants to help others see you can have good clean music and it can carry you through anything. With that “watch me” attitude, I wouldn’t bet against her. LEARN MORE ABOUT ANNA AT WWW.ANNAKAELIN.COM OR CONNECT WITH HER AT WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/ANNAKAELINMUSIC.

The Napier Co. Defining 20th Century American Costume Jewelry
MELINDA L. LEWIS
T
he Definitive History and Visual Catalog of The Napier Co. Jewelry: A Tour De Force!
Of all the jewelry manufacturers in the United States, none has influenced a woman’s expression of style more than The Napier Co. Throughout its 121–year history, it continually broke new ground, raising both standards and expectations for quality in fashion jewelry. It is only fitting that the Scottish name “Napier” means “without equal,” as its dedication to innovation in manufacturing methods and the creative freedom of its designers, raised the bar for the American costume jewelry industry. This book tells the heretofore untold and phenomenal story of The Napier Co.’s inception, development, flowering, and ultimate success. It chronicles the history of its management, manufacturing, marketing, and most importantly, the unparalleled beauty of its jewelry. With approximately 4000 pictures and over 250,000 words of text and descriptions, you will be taken step-by-step, decade by decade, through the development of the Napier style. As a collector, you will learn to recognize the findings, materials, and designs to appropriately circa-date the Napier jewelry in which you are investing. As a lover of jewelry, you will enjoy the drama and excitement of the trials, tribulations, and breakthroughs at each stage of the Napier journey. In the end, you will have a deep and lasting appreciation of the romantic story infused into the metal, gemstones, crystals, cabochons, and elegance of each piece of Napier jewelry that you own or are considering owning. On this journey, we will examine Napier’s role in the jewelry and fashion industries of which it was a part, especially the relationship between overall fashion trends and jewelry design. We will follow the development of the fashion industry as a whole, from the last quarter of the 19th century into the 21st century, with a particular focus on the 20th century, when fashion or costume jewelry entered a woman’s wardrobe as part of the necessary accoutrements of fashionable dress. As we guide you through the decades, you will learn how various social factors shaped the history of costume jewelry, including: • The influence of the Paris Salons, couture, and the various fashion “movements” whose popularity and competition drove the ever-changing styles. • The effects of technological and manufacturing breakthroughs, such as mass production, new materials and the affordability of jewelry on popular tastes. • The communication breakthroughs in mass media, which both spread conventional fashion standards faster and more broadly, but also allowed for the creation of more specialized markets and styles. • The impact of competition between jewelry manufacturing communities, firms and related industries, as well as the effects of governmental regulation and resource availability on what could be made, marketed, and sold as the latest fashion. • And much, much more.
“Not only is the book beautiful ... photos, color, layout and design and
paper, but is filled with an encyclopedia’s worth of information. Everyone should have this as part of their jewelry library.” Shelly Osborne
