Carmen Bucco, founder of Bucco Couture, grew up in foster care when he decided to move out on his own at age 17. Knowing he had to earn a living, Carmen made a humble beginning shining shoes. He had a thirst to learn more about the business, so simultaneously, he worked in his spare time to learn about pressing, dry cleaning, and measuring clothing. Self-educated in clothing construction led him to being recruited by a large formalwear company. Unimpressed with the corporate life, Bucco struck out on his own, dressing people and educating them as to what to wear. Within 3 years of opening Bucco Clothiers he had over 400 clients with no marketing. Today Bucco Couture is taking its business model across the US, paying it forward and taking on one consultant at a time to truly make them successful. Big is not always better. Quality of service is key to any solid organization. Amber Mendenhall is a seamstress in Ohio who dreams of becoming a Professional Clothing Historian, or something of that nature. Life Image – Learn About Other Countries

By Carolyn Bendall

A WHILE BACK OUR CHURCH HAD A CLASS THAT WAS TAUGHT DURING THE WOMEN’S MEETING CALLED CULTURAL REFINEMENT. I LOVED THAT

CLASS. We explored other cultures and sometimes even expanded the lesson into an activity for a

dinner or an activity that reflected traditions from that country. We have lived in Okinawa, and we tried to immerse our children in the culture. We had some help, the Department of Defense schools had Culture Class during the school week. My daughter didn’t want lace up shoes because for Culture Class she had to take her shoes off to walk on the rice mat. That Christmas their Santa lists were awesome, they wanted (in no particular order) a rice mat for their room, chop sticks, floor pillows, and several other Okinawan items. I was so happy that Christmas. When we left Okinawa I made sure that each of them had their own set of Shishi Dogs (Lions, depending on who you talk to). We also purchased a kimono and obi, a tea set, some beautiful art tapestries, cloisonné, and a book on birth years and a Japanese children’s storybook. The storybook has long gone fell apart because it was ‘loved’ just a bit too much! While we lived in Hawaii we went to the Polynesian Cultural Center. That was my favorite place on the island to take those who came to see us while we lived there. The cultures of 7 different Polynesian countries were represented, and taught to the public by those from the island countries. When we went back with our now grown children, that was one of the first places they wanted to go see, too. My dream is to go to Iceland one day. I remember learning about the small island country while in elementary school. There was something that my teacher said that sparked my love for this country. I also want to go to Great Britain. My daughter spent two months in Europe for a World War 2 study abroad class. She was in Heaven while she was there. She got to see first hand historic landmarks that she had only read about. Now we may not be able to go to these countries, but we can study them. With the aid of the internet we can find recipes that are authentic, movies, books, and websites dedicated to the culture. One can even watch the Travel Channel and learn about far away lands. Make a goal to choose a country that you want to learn about. Then move forward in that research. Then, have a family party, or a party for your friends representing that country. With the internet you can even have a virtual ‘vacation slide show’! J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 11

Wellness: All Around the World By Kally Efros

EVERY CULTURE AROUND THE WORLD HAS DEVELOPED ITS OWN HEALING ARTS WHICH ARE UNIQUE. SOME MAY SEEM EXTREME OR UNUSUAL IN OUR WESTERN CULTURE , BUT TIME HAS SHOWN MANY TO BE EFFECTIVE AND ADVANCED SYSTEMS. I have included a few for you to consider, but I encourage you to explore the

many options that are available in the world. More and more, these techniques can be found right here at home.

Thailand Thai Yoga Massage is a unique and ancient healing system still practiced today that combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles and assisted yoga postures. The client remains clothed and there are no lotions used. The massage is performed on the floor on a mat so that the practitioner can assist the client with yoga poses during the massage. The practitioner will palm the body’s energy, ‘Sen’ lines and pressure points. This modality relieves muscular tension, improves circulation, boosts the immune system and balances the body energetically. You will experience muscle compression and joint mobilization during the treatment. People describe it as both relaxing and energizing. This technique is still practiced today and has been around for over 2500 years.

China Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM operates under the belief that the processes of the human body are interrelated and connect to the environment. This method was developed over 2,000 years ago. The guiding principle is to dispel the evil and support the good. It also focuses on strengthening the body’s defenses to maintain health. There was a time in China where you paid your doctor to keep you healthy. If you became ill, you stopped paying your doctor until you were well again. A TCM practitioner focuses on maintaining a harmonious balance in the whole body and free flowing Qi – your vital energy. They will look for situations in your body at are hot, cold, wet or damp and balance those. If you are found to have a hot condition, then remedies or therapies will be prescribed to balance the heat with cool. Traditional Chinese herbal remedies will be used, along with Qigong (a breathing practice that is 5,000 years old), Acupuncture and Cupping among other practices. There many practitioners all over the world using TCM and acupuncture by itself has been proven to be very effective for treating a variety of ailments including performing surgery without anesthesia. Another ‘healthy’ Chinese habit is drinking warm water, it isn’t just for safety, it is considered healthy. J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 13

Your True Colours Germany

I have many friends from Germany that end their showers with cold water. And it is a common ritual in many countries to submerge in hot water or a sauna and then into cold water. While this may sound shocking and be shocking to the body, it is an amazing therapy. This therapy has been around for hundreds of years and increases energy, circulation and helps with detoxification. Water therapy is used by many health practitioners to ease the body of many ailments including migraines. I actually traveled to Canada for a conference and the opening activity was a trip to a spa that included hot spas or saunas and then a dip into melting snow. Yes, it was shocking. But my energy went through the roof and I can tell you I felt amazing. Another interesting thing I learned about Germans, they utilize Gem therapy. It is so common you will find articles written about the topic in standard magazine and doctors will prescribe gem stone elixirs as remedies.

Finland Nearly every household in Finland has a sauna. They consider them to be a necessity rather than a luxury. It is a place to relax the physical and mental body and enjoy time with friends and family. Before public health care, many Finnish mothers gave birth in saunas. It is such an important part of their culture and heritage that the sauna was the first structure built – even before the home. And yes they also take a jump in cold water or roll in the snow.

Hawaii Lomilomi is a very popular massage that emphasizes a spirit / body connection and has some roots similar to Japan’s shiatsu technique. Ho’opono’pono is an ancient healing technique. You will see stress relieved and it is very simple. Ho’opono’pono means to make right. It implies to make right your relationships and with all others for any mistakes or harm whether intentionally or accidentally. It revolves around four steps: 1) Responsibility and Acceptance; 2) Forgiveness and Reconciliation; 3) Gratitude; and 4) Love.

Your True Colours Wellness (Continued)

Native American Native Americans traditionally have a deep respect for nature and use botanical medicine. They consider plants to be sacred. Many healers will use healing touch and noncontact healing. A sweat lodge, it is used to cleanse or purify individuals and symbolizes returning to the womb. Balance is important and spiritual interventions are seen as critical to the success of any treatment plan. You will find many spas these days incorporating principles of Native American healing techniques. Ceremonies play an important role in healing. Another wonderful therapy is the ‘Burden Basket’. A small woven basket is used as a receptacle for worries, concerns and mental burdens. You symbolically place your cares and burdens in the basket. The Cherokee were also familiar with acupuncture meridians and used acupuncture with needles made of thorns or porcupine quills.

India We hear more of India’s 5,000 year old system of medicine called Ayurveda. It is one of the world’s oldest medical systems. Ayurveda is a complex and sophisticated powerful mind-body health system. Ayurvedic medicine promotes good health, rather than fight disease, but there are specific treatments for health problems. There are 2 principles, 1) The mind and body are connected; and 2) Nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind. Some of the tools used are meditation, eating a colorful and flavorful diet, promoting good digestion, yoga, breathing properly, proper rest, being and living in tune with nature, aromatherapy, herbs, and taking it easy – not forcing things. Herbal remedies are also used.

Africa Many healers will use drum therapy to promote healing. Research shows that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well-being. Participants will often sit in a drumming circle. There are many healing centers in the United States that are using drumming therapy as an effective group therapy for Alzheimer’s patients, autism, recovering addicts, those in prison, people with a range of emotional disorders and physical disabilities. Drumming has been shown

J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 15

to reduce stress and help with fatigue and anxiety. Some studies show drumming even helps with chronic pain.

Sumaria (or what is now Iraq) Sound healing or the Gong bath is said to have originated 6,000 years ago with the intention of bringing back into a state of health and harmony using a voice or different musical instruments. The Gong makes the sound of “Om which is an extremely power and healing sound to the human ear. Many cultures from Native Americans, the Mayas and ancient Greeks have utilized the Gong Bath. It brings you into a state of deep relaxation and meditation working on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. It opens, clears and recharges the whole being helping to bring one into alignment. Gong therapy is gaining in popularity in spas and offices. You can even organize a gong event for workshops, parties, weddings and more. This is where the roots of sound therapy comes from which utilizes singing bowls. Sound therapy is gaining recognition in modern medicine as well. I have a singing bowl, it was a gift and it is relaxing and healing. In my studies of alternative medicine, I have learned about and participated in many of these therapies. Some have similar purpose and focus. I can tell you that I love drumming therapy. I always feel so connected to the group and free from challenges during and after a session. Ayurveda has principles similar to traditional naturopathy and to me is just common sense. What is a common thread is the belief that you cannot heal the body without healing the mind. In this country many modern researchers have come to that same conclusion. I experienced my first amazing healing event with sound therapy at a conference. The speaker was demonstrating tuning forks, he asked for volunteers experiencing neck pain. I had it, but I was at the back of the room and didn’t go up. He rang the tuning fork in the microphone and I was so surprised that my neck immediately relaxed and calmed down. I now own my own set of tuning forks. We live in a world that is rich in knowledge of the healing arts. It is truly wonderful that in the information age we can learn so easily about the different cultures from every corner of the planet, even those that existed anciently. I recommend that you explore and learn more of some of these amazing techniques. Photo credits: Stuart Miles, marin, warradmu, Danilo Rizzuti, tiverylucky

The Power of Knowing Your Personality Color By Karla Brandau, CEO, Workplace Power Institute

ARTISTS, CLOTHING DESIGNERS, WEB DESIGNERS, AND MANY OTHER PROFESSIONS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE COLOR PALLET TO BE TERRIFIC AT WHAT THEY PRODUCE . Carolyn Bendall, the President of Fashion

Academy, is a total image consultant who teaches an understanding of your complexion and what color and style of clothes look the best on you. This helps you avoid purchasing something you really like but is not one of the best colors or styles for you to wear. I didn’t follow her instruction and purchased a blouse I loved but it was not one of my best colors and every time I put it on, I take it off because it doesn’t look right. I should have taken Bendall’s advice. Just as an understanding of color helps you look your best in the clothing you choose, a knowledge of your personality color helps you be the best in all life situations. A knowledge of your personality color helps you play to your strengths and a knowledge of the personality of those you manage, work with, or live with helps you increase your influence on their behaviors. This knowledge helps you add a magical edge to your personality and gives you additional behavior options as you interface with the people in your daily life. There are four basic personality types, each with a color that reflects their main characteristics: Dominant Red, Planner Blue, Charismatic Yellow, and Stable Green. Most humans are a blend of the colors, but it is normal for individuals to have a dominant color. Keep in mind there is no superior color. Each J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 25

Your True Colours

color has incredible strengths and plays an important place in our world. In this article, I’m going to describe each color and use humor to emphasize some of their characteristics. At the end of the article, I’ll give you a link so you can download a sheet of each color’s strengths and limitations. As I describe the characteristics of the four colors, take notes and decide which describes you the best.

RED – the Intensity of the Burning Fire Red individuals are the power brokers of the world. They have dominant personalities and every day they burn brightly like a fire with the drive to succeed. If you are a Red power broker, you are a natural leader, can take responsibility, and have the ability to push others to meet their goals. You live an actionoriented life like James Bond, Indiana Jones, Jack Image courtesy of voraorn at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Ryan, or Ethan Hunt.

When you were two years old, you were peering through the crib bars thinking, “When do I take over?” At 14 you were ready to leave home and when you got to college you said, “Don’t worry about the education, I’ve got that covered, just give me the diploma and let me outta here.” Your T-shirt might say, “I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong” and your bumper sticker might say “Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life here on earth.” When you enter any competitive situation, be it tennis, basketball or a sales competition you might not say it, but you think to yourself, “There can only be one winner. Do you still want to play?” You prefer communication that gets to the point and often become bored with superficial conversations. You prefer discussions that move projects forward toward successful conclusions.

BLUE – the Persistent, Always Running Living Water Blue individuals have a productive, planning orientation to life. If you are a Blue individual, you are part of the detail brigade and just like life-giving water that is always running and filling the crevices around the river, you are constantly moving to make sure all the pieces are in place and nothing is overlooked for projects, assignments and events. J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 26

Your True Colours

Vol. 2 Issue 1

Your True Colours

Personality Color (Continued) You are persistent and you claim success over the long haul just as over time water breaks down massive rock formations and forms natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon. Because of your detail orientation, you have a place for everything. Your shoes are in neat rows in your closet, your pictures from every vacation for the last 20 years are meticulously placed in carefully named folders in an online storage program. You love making to-do lists, volunteering and you strive to do everything to perfection. Your mottos are “Zero Defects” and “If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well.” You are the moral conscience of all humanity much like five-year-old Timmy shopping with his mother for groceries. He wanted some red grapes. However, his mother had purchased sour grapes before so she tasted one and gave one to Timmy. Finding the grapes were delicious, she put two big clumps in their shopping cart. They reached the checkout counter and after the mother had paid for the groceries, little Timmy tugged on her jacket and in anything but a timid voice said, “But Mommy, you didn’t pay for the two grapes we ate.” The mother looked at him for a few seconds, rummaged through her purse, found two pennies, laid them on the counter and said, “That is for the two grapes we ate.”

YELLOW – The Brilliance of the Sun If great verbal skills, good old fashioned charisma, and a love social events describe you, you have a Yellow personality. As the sun warms the world, you warm and envelop others with your cheerfulness and optimism. One word of caution: Other colors may find you annoying in the morning when you are overly alert and vivacious. Your happy attitude can irritate them. Image courtesy of worradmu at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

You usually have a funny line or a humorous anecdote to swap. You forget how long you’ve been on the phone

and superficial chitchat is no problem for you. You hate details – it’s like putting your mind in Spanx shapewear. People should never give you the original of anything (you might misplace it) and if your check book is out of balance, you will change banks. You love life except for work — when you get to Heaven, you are going to ask God why he invented work. One teenager with tons of yellow and who noticed that the garbage was picked up only once a week, told his mom, “I decided what I want to be when I start work: a garbage man – they only work one day a week.” J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 27 Your True Colours

If your main color is yellow and you have to work more than one or two days a week, you will probably look for jobs like life guard, zoo keeper, retail clerk, entertainer, beauty councilor, or motivational speaker – jobs that are active with freedom of movement. And funerals? You will talk about yours. One Yellow friend told me this about her funeral: “I want a glorious obituary lightly spiced with irreverent anecdotes about my life. I want laughter along with the tears. I want everyone to know that I had a whale of a great time walking about God’s earth.” Your bumper stickers probably say, “Surf Naked,” “Party Animal,” “Don’t worry be Happy” or “Gone crazy, be back soon.” You believe as the song-writer and guitarist Roger Miller sang “You can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd, but you can be happy if you’ve a mind to.”

GREEN – the Strength of the Mighty Oak Tree The green individual is stable and collaborative with a quiet confidence. They are calm and silently strong and powerful. If your main qualities are Green, you are a person of few words and need to be asked for your opinion but when you speak, people listen. You are kind, patient, relaxed and nonjudgmental. I learned the Green perspective of being non-judgmental from my son when he was about 10 years old. He and his friends wanted to go into business fixing and selling bicycles. They were gathering broken bicycles from all the neighbors and soon my carport looked like bicycle graveyard. I said, “Mark, you’ve got to clean this up. People will drive by or come to see us and they will think we are junky people.” To which he replied, “I don’t think you should judge people by what they look like.” This is a core belief of the Green person and their motto is: “People should live life in no particular way but their own.” You are fine working alone in a computer room or the back office, you are a methodical thinker and you enjoy the calm of nature. Your bumper sticker might say, “The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work!” If your dominant color is Green, you have a gentle touch about you, much like Clint Eastwood developed as a movie director. John Balzar in the Los Angeles Times reports that Eastwood doesn’t yell, “ACTION” J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 28

Personality Color (Continued) when he is ready to start a scene. Instead he says a casual, “Okay.” Eastwood explains he learned when filming Rawhide that when you yell “ACTION,” it sends adrenalin not only through the actors, but through the horses who end up jumping out of the shot, making you start over again.

Your Color Were you able to decipher your true color? Probably so. I find the study of personalities fascinating. The knowledge helps me every day as I interface with my family, friends, co-workers and employees. If you would like to learn more, I have prepared a worksheet for you on the strengths and limitations of each personality color. A - Loretta: Sherri, I love being asked that question! I actually have so much to say in answer to the question that for the sake of time I will refer your readers to Hebrews, Chapter 11 (New International Version – NIV) focusing on verses 1 and 6. I fully believe "Without faith it is impossible to please God.” My story is one of going from being financially stable, to walking by faith when I launched the Show. 7 years after the official launch until now, we are airing in several markets, having an international publicly traded company as one of our sponsors!

Q – Sherri: Name the most exciting interview you have ever had the opportunity to host and why.

Each stems from unique designs found in modern and ancient societies. We'll let them speak for themselves. Ever looked at your phone screen with polarized lenses? It's psychedelic to say the least. A Grandmother’s Love Creates a Business By Carolyn Bendall

KAREN BOWERSOX HAS A BEAUTIFUL GRANDDAUGHTER, MAGGIE, WHO HAPPENS TO BE A CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME. BOWERSOX NOTICED THAT AS MAGGIE GREW THAT CLOTHES DID NOT FIT HER VERY WELL . Her daughter had to roll up pants and shirts, which proved

Karen Bowersox and Maggie, her granddaughter and inspiration for Down's Designs.

frustrating to a small child. When her daughter challenged her to start a company to design clothing that fit Down’s children’s unique body shapes; she went home and began an internet search on the subject. She realized there was an open niche, there were no clothes specific for this situation.

Bowersox notes that children with Down's femur is much smaller than the average child, therefore pants need to be hemmed, usually drastically. When one hems a regular pair of pants, it takes away the shape of the pant and what is left are stovepipe legs. Add to that the fumbling that goes with a child with motor skill problems, zippers and buttons add to the frustrations. A child with Down's does not usually have the patience to try on mulitple pairs of jeans in a store, either. Then the third fact that sends most to sweat pants, are waists that do not come close to fitting. Bowersox began to ‘study’ the body types of children with Down's. She noticed that there were typcial body shapes, and she would be able to create a line of jeans that would answer the frustrations of parents and children. Her end result is eight different designs, all named for the ‘model’ that she used to create the style. It is an expensive venture, for the 8 styles, she had to create 85 pairs. However, all of that work is paid off when she gets emails from parents, “Now my kid feels like the other kids!” To get to that happy email, is still a process. Bowersox will send out three pairs per order, for trying on. The parents are given specific instruction on how to measure the fit, and in some cases they will ‘Skype’ with Bowersox so that she can see the jeans on the child. The jeans are then sent back to the company in Ohio where they are hemmed, and in some cases slightly altered. After the jeans are sent back, Bowersox requests a photo of the child in the jeans; and J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 50

A Grandmother’s Love (Continued) it goes up on their Facebook page (which creates even more excitement in the child!). The jeans are made of a soft, stretchy material. They have an elastic waist for ease of putting on. They are hemmed by the individual’s needs. And, since a trait of many children with Down's is a distaste for anything tight around their bellies, Bowersox created the ‘Dip Down’ jean. It dips down in the front, and comes up high enough in the back to cover—even when one sits. The Down’s body shape that has a larger tummy than hips creates the problem of regular jeans falling down unless pulled tight with a belt, this elimantes that discomfort. It is her most popular style, in fact, it is 85% of her business. Once she perfected the jeans for the child, teen, and adult with Down's; she moved on to another faction of the population that is in similar need, disabled veterans. She has premiered the new line, NBZ Jeans (No Buttons Zipperless Jeans). The soft, stretchy fabric she uses for the Down’s Designs is also used for the NBZ Jeans. The unique fabric fits over prosthetic limbs with no tugging and pulling, like regular jeans would have. The jeans are also easier to put on than regular jeans if one has to use prosthetic limbs in place of one’s arms. The jeans give the veterans a small bit of personal space back. The mock fly still gives the appearance of a regular pair of jeans. The business that Bowersox started has become a mission, and she has just started the transition to a non-profit. The jeans run between $50 to $60, and is charged only one shipping fee; even though one pair of jeans may be shipped four times. The tailoring time alone would be the cost of the jeans. However, Bowersox is trying to keep the jeans affordable to families that are already strapped with medical costs that the average family does not endure. She has created the ‘Adopt-A-Jean’ program. One can go to the website to purchase as many pairs of jeans as a budget can afford to be applied to the cost of the jeans. She is planning a huge fund raising event for Veteran's in the near future.

NBZ Original Jeans Medium Blue NBZ Jeans for men have no button or zipper. They also have a mock fly, full elastic waistband and the denim is soft and stretchy. They offer style and comfort and, at the same time, help make dressing easier. http://www.downsdesignsdreams.org

THE JEAN FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE CURVES, WHICH, CONTRARY TO WHAT MOST DESIGNERS BELIEVE , IS THE MAJORITY OF WOMEN! The true hourglass figure finds frustration in finding jeans that fit well. This body shaped women endures oversized waistlines to get jeans to fit over the hips; jeans that dip down so far in the back that when one sits down…well, it just isn’t pretty…; and jeans so tight, especially in the thigh area that legs become fatigued. PZI Jeans recognizes this very normal body shape, and has created the jean for the real woman.

Surprisingly, in men this quality appears in a greater degree than in women. What is the secret of being such a charismatic personality and is there any chance to school oneself in it? Is charisma an indisputably genetic factor or not? I am not an expert in this area, so let's leave the topic to psychologists. Nevertheless, I believe that some skills and abilities not given by nature might be developed. It is a natural fact that each person has a number of born and hereditary abilities. But many traits might be inculcated and become characteristic features of personal brand. Charisma lies not only in thinking and behavior, but also in upbringing, manners and appearance that distinguishes a person from others. Nowadays the topic of personal brand is as relevant and popular as a company brand creation. Would you admit that there is nothing more important and reliable than investments in yourself? Self-fulfillment, Courtesy of Bucco Couture education and development of personal image are all parts of your Success. And people seek for those who are successful. If you don’t create your desirable personal brand today, others will do it instead of you tomorrow. In modern age of J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 65 Your True Colours

Internet Technologies and social networks information spreads instantly, and it is in the interests of any person to create a good reputation; to take the initiative and develop personal brand; to monitor this process during the whole life. Internal development depends on our aspirations and aims. Yet the world fashion houses and stylists work to create and maintain our appearance and personal image. Does "Super 150s Wool" Make For A Great Suit? By Carmen Bucco, Bucco Couture

ANY MAN FEELS ESPECIALLY SUAVE AND SOPHISTICATED WHEN HE 'S BUYING A NEW SUIT. EVEN FOLKS WITH MODEST FINANCIAL MEANS ARE WILLING TO SPLURGE ON HIGHQUALITY FORMAL CLOTHING . Then it

happens: The customer's eye lights on the tags on a premium suit. It says "Super 180s" wool. And the price is incredibly high. The fabric's amazingly smooth, it feels great on the hand - but does that mean the suit is something extra special?

The Amazing History of the Super Number In a world of high technology, the origin story of wool's super number is laughably arcane. It goes back to the 18th century, when the production of wool became a global industry. Spinners needed a way to quantify the fineness and quality of different vendors' wool. What they wound up with was counting the number of "hanks," heavy-duty yarn spools that could be spun from a single pound of wool. For centuries, the fineness of quality wool ran from 30s to 100s. That started to change in the mid-twentieth century, as refined weaving technology made it possible to break the 100s barrier. Fineness took a big jump, the measurement gained the prefix "Super," and authorities started measuring with a microscope. Today virtually all suit wool is over 100s, with numbers above 150s being common for extremely fine suits. Experts predict that 250s wool will enter the marketplace soon, indicating the upper limit of modern possibilities.

Clearing Up Confusion: Important Distinctions to Make It's important to understand the distinction between the different terms used to describe the fineness of wool before purchasing a good suit. "Super 110s" indicates fabric that's fairly fine and spun entirely J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 69 Your True Colours

from wool. A number without the "super" prefix indicates a wool blend, although the fineness requirements are the same. It should also be noted that because of its weight-to-fineness origins, this measurement is completely different from the "thread count" used to gauge the fineness of other fabrics, like cotton. The modern range of wool used in good suits ranges from Super 100s to Super 150s, with lower fineness grades being practically unheard of. Higher grades exist, though, and they command astronomical prices.

The Truth about Super Wools - Finer Fabric, Poorer Durability No one can deny that fine wool suits are far lighter and finer than they were just ten years ago. No refinement comes without price, though. As weavers produce lighter and lighter wool, they lose the incredible durability that made wool valuable in the past. Suits crafted from high Super number wool are closer to linen in the way they crease and wear. This means that the high end of the Super number scale is not just rare, it's also incredibly fragile. Sports cars make for an apt analogy: Think of a Super 180s wool suit like a Ferrari. It's best suited to wearers who can not only afford it but afford to lose it.

Tailoring Is Still King For ordinary men, it's best not to worry too much about Super numbers. Excellent suits can be created (and are!) using wool in the Super 110s to Super 150s range. When he starred in the Thomas Crown Affair, Pierce Brosnan was clad exclusively in Super 150s. It cannot be stated often enough: A stylish, well-tailored wool suit will look great in fabric of almost any fineness. In contrast, even the rarest Super 200s wool cannot save a man who's wearing a poorly cut suit. It's better to invest in a good fit and excellent adjustments before worrying about super premium wool. http://www.bucco.us/content/

Stitch Counters and Farbs, Pretty Princesses and Milkmaids; What they mean and how they intertwine. By Amber Mendenhall

THAT WAS A PAINFULLY LONG TITLE, AND WILL THUS BE A PAINFULLY LONG POST, BUT I HAD A RECENT

CONVERSATION THAT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT HOW THERE IS A VASTDIFFERENCE OF PURPOSE PEOPLE HAVE WITHIN THIS HOBBY. Many others have touched upon what I am about to discuss and I shall

link as appropriate.

Terms to review before reading the meat of my post: Living History [noun/verb]: An activity, often a hobby, that incorporates historical tools, activities and dress into an interactive presentation with or without an audience; often depicting a specific event or living conditions of a particular time period. Other common usages: Living Historian[noun]. source:wikipedia.com, dictionary.com Reenacting [verb]: an activity, often a hobby, that incorporates living historians and/or reenactors to depict the past. Other common usages: Reenactor [noun], reenactment [event]. source: wikipedia, freedictionary Historical Interpretation [verb]: an activity, often a hobby, that incorporates living history/reenacting in a means visible to spectators; can be in first-person (a specific character unable to communicate with spectators on modern subjects) or third-person (a specific trade or status of person, able to communicate with spectators on modern subjects). other common usages: historical interpreter [noun] J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 79

Stitch-Counter [noun/adjective]: derogatory term; highest level of authenticity; often applied to those in the reenacting/living history community who are overly concerned with authenticity and research; typically identified by outward appearance or actions. common synonyms: thread-counter, progressive, anal retentive, die-hard. source: Passion for the Past (http://passionforthepast.blogspot.com/2008/09/ civil-war-reenactingdefinition.html), personal experience within the hobby Mainstream [noun/adjective]: derogatory term; mid-level authenticity; often applied to those who outwardly appear to be authentic, but are not overly concerned with authenticity or research if a spectator will not see it; typically identified by actions and appearance. common synonyms: poser, meh, not dedicated, gullible. source: The Victorian Needle (http://victorianneedle. blogspot.com/), wikipedia Farb [noun/adjective]: derogatory term; lowest level of authenticity; often applied to those in the reenacting/living history community who are not overly concerned with authenticity or research; typically identified by outward appearance and actions. common synonyms: lazy, unresearched, gullible. source: The Victorian Needle (http://victorianneedle. blogspot.com/), wikipedia Pretty Princess [noun/adjective]: derogatory term; mid-high level authenticity; often applied to those who are overly concerned with outward–and often high fashion– appearance rather than relevancy to living conditions, socioeconomic status, or location of said fashions; typically identified by outward J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 80

appearance and actions. common synonyms: vain, unresearched, vain, not dedicated. source: MEAN GOSSIP Milk Maid [noun/adjective]: derogatory term; mid-high level authenticity; often applied to those who are overly concerned with relevancy to living conditions, socioeconomic status, or location of interpretation of a particular time period; common synonyms: boring, anal-retentive, die hard, frumpy. source: MEAN GOSSIP

Okay, so what do those have to do with purpose? Well, let me tell you a story… When I was 13 years old, I saw a pattern in a simplicity catalogue for a beautiful 1860’s gown. I told my mother how much I liked it and she agreed that if I saved up money, we might be able to find someone to make it for me. I saved for months and over a period of 2.5 years, had a full kit. I was SO EXCITED to jump into American Civil War reenacting, my heart was bursting. Well as I arrived, I noticed the ladies of the camp were what is known as farby. And my petite and well dressed self of 16, became a threat when I entered the local regiment’s camp (I was invited by email inquiry—not an in person thing). During my time there I was backhandedly insulted because my “hoop skirt had too many steels” and my dress had “way more than 8 yards of fabric” and I was “too young to participate” with the group. Were they right in telling me those things? No. My research indicated I was correct but I was DEVASTATED. My first experience, having researched clothing (not so much etiquette or social cues of the time) and having a good representation of a gown from the era… my hopes were dashed. These people were toxic, and I didn’t attend another event for a year. They viewed themselves as stitch- counters, but they had little documentation and were thriving on outdated research. They were in fact, farbs. Eventually I started researching on my own and started giving presentations on Civilian Life and Women’s clothing throughout the 1860s and things have progressed on from there.

So what does that have to do with purpose? Recently I was told that I was “…one of those people with too strict rules… that run people out of this hobby.” and that “This hobby is supposed to be fun.” I know others that have had J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 81

similar conversations with people in the hobby– and it got me thinking. Why is it that there is such hostility between people in the hobby? One side hates the other and both sides gossip about how ridiculous the other side is. It’s really a juvenile way of acting. The community isn’t that huge per era and living historians and reenactors are all out for the same thing–right? Wrong. There are different reasons or purposes that people choose to be in this community. And that’s something that both sides need to keep in mind before things get dicey. I have met some insanely talented craftsmen who would identify as a stitch-counter, extremist, or progressive in their technique or trade who outwardly look farby. Their interest is not in the clothing or social etiquette of the time period, it’s the art of their trade. I have also met some people that look like farbs who think they’re stitch-counters because 15 years ago they read a book or something on the internet. Identities are always complicated and none of these terms are friendly. That’s why we have to keep purpose in mind before we come to conclusions.

Fun and education. That is the difference. On the purpose of education: Almost every true stitch-counter I’ve met, including myself, enjoy living history because of the education aspect. We love learning, and we love to help others learn. Therefore, accuracy is of the utmost importance. Although we strive for authenticity as far as means allow (in skill or funds) we are willing to point out items in our kit that are inauthentic as a way to teach others. Christina from On Living History (http://onlivinghistory. blogspot.com/2014/03/the-truth-ofstory.html) has a post about why we need to strive for accuracy, and I wholeheartedly agree with her post. This is a common philosophy as many people who identify as living historians, progressives, J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 82

mainstreams, clothing historians, and milk maids . We are trying to engage the public, who typically write off history as boring, and have them view it through a tangible and tactile lens that they can understand, rather than reading pages from a book. That is why stitch-counters get angry when farbs try to educate with little means or research. It negates their purpose. But, we often forget that those on the other side of the hobby have a different reason for being there. On the purpose of fun: I have met a ton of delightfully nice people who got into the hobby because a friend or spouse insisted they do it and they liked it, but it’s just a fun thing they do; and guess what? They’re farby. Pure enjoyment to be out and doing something is the reason that we see so many people who outwardly look like farbs or pretty princesses at an event… and they know. They understand they might not be authentic, but so many of these people can’t see the justification in the expenditures and time it takes to make an accurate kit. They may like to look that way, or they don’t care. Farbs look at others who limit themselves to accuracy as taking all the fun out of it— which negates their purpose. Whereas stitch-counters can only understand authenticity as being the fun part. What we have to keep in mind: Not only do both sides need to understand what their purpose in the hobby is. As a stitch-counter, I have no place to judge someone who is outwardly farby. Their purpose may be to enjoy themselves and spend time with their friends, or they may just be at their first event. We all started somewhere, and everyone is at a different level of accuracy for one reason or another. The only thing to do is talk about it— civilly— if someone cares to know more. On the other hand, as a farb, that person also has no reason to judge a stitch-counter. This might be the stitch-counter’s only hobby. The person could be a PHD in a particular historical field. But accuracy is a stitch-counter’s version of fun. Personally, I identify as a stitch-counting milk maid (most of the time, sometimes it’s fun to be a pretty princess)… but it wasn’t always that way. I stayed mainstream for a while because I didn’t have the means to be accurate. But for me now, if I am asked to make an item that has no historical evidence (typically at least three examples of a particular thing) that it was made, I will choose whether or not to make it based on the item’s purpose. I also identify as a historical clothier rather than a historical costumer ( for a great post on that by the Couture Courtesan, http://couturecourtesan.blogspot.com /2012/09/midnight-musings-when-costumes-become.html) We also, on both sides of the tracks, should decide which events to go to based on their purpose. If you’re going to a place like Colonial Williamsburg or Greenfield Village, etc, please understand that their organizations’ mission is to educate and that farbing it up is only going to cause everyone heartache. It’s not personal, it’s just my philosophy. J u l y 2 0 1 5 | 83

In short (after a ridiculously long post), if we want to bring more people into this hobby, everyone needs to be understanding and discontinue the volatile name calling we continuously use. Let’s just all try to make history a fun thing for everyone to enjoy.

“The Old Ones” A Novel for Deep Thinking

MANUELA MELTON DRAWS ON YEARS OF

TEACHING TO PULL TOGETHER A NOVEL FOR

THE TEENS. The book, however, like many

other novels for young adults and teens, would be liked by adults, as well. Melton’s quest for more knowledge on Biblical subjects and histories, as well as tenets, shaped the storyline of ‘The Old Ones’. The Guardians that are unseen by us, who maneuver the world to protect. Developing an entirely new culture, complete with archaic sounding names, has been perfected within the story. And, for those who have trouble keeping up

with unfamiliar names, Melton has included an appendix for reference. A good read for those who like sci-fi fantasy, Biblebased fiction, or just love to read a good story no matter the genre. The book can be purchased on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Old-Ones-ManuelaMelton/dp/162510913X

she whimpered when she had realized what she had done, “I failed again…”

She didn't struggle. She understood, once again, that her fate was of her own making. Screeching sounds came from the swarm as it absorbed Sharon into its blackness. She reached for me as it sucked her in, but we both knew there was nothing I could do. She was a rightful child of Chaos, born into flesh and blood, and there, held hostage. Still, I grabbed her hand and struggled to keep the many shedhim from dragging her away. She was a Child of the Father. The Master made her many ages ago from the Father's own spirit and called her and her innumerable siblings into the natural realm to restore Planet Rahu, one of the many planets destroyed in a cosmic calamity. My name is Haziel. My brothers and I make up an elite guardian team called the Chayot. Sharon and the other Children lived long and blissful lives in our company, until, in the process of building a safe and pure world for themselves and the Adam, something happened to change the moral compass of the Children's civilization, allowing Chaos to enter. The same destruction that happened to the world before them happened all over again because of something they refused to do. What they didn't do was so horrendous that now, their punishment is to relive the pain and sadness they caused: they were placed into a cycle where they must incarnate repeatedly into bodies of the fallen Adam to live with the consequences of their inaction, and Sharon's lives always end with her return to Hell. However, they were children of a just Father, who has given many opportunities for them to set things right and return home. Now, they are old as time itself, and time has run out. Only one lifetime remains for Sharon and the Old Ones to break free and make restitution. There is one simple thing keeping them from breaking free from the cycle, though. Will Sharon remember what it is and transcend the cycle? Or will she forget and remain a child of Hell, spending eternity with her father, Chaos?
