The Napier Co. Defining 20th Century American Costume Jewelry

MELINDA L. LEWIS

T

he Definitive History and Visual Catalog of The Napier Co. Jewelry: A Tour De Force!

Of all the jewelry manufacturers in the United States, none has influenced a woman’s expression of style more than The Napier Co. Throughout its 121–year history, it continually broke new ground, raising both standards and expectations for quality in fashion jewelry. It is only fitting that the Scottish name “Napier” means “without equal,” as its dedication to innovation in manufacturing methods and the creative freedom of its designers, raised the bar for the American costume jewelry industry. This book tells the heretofore untold and phenomenal story of The Napier Co.’s inception, development, flowering, and ultimate success. It chronicles the history of its management, manufacturing, marketing, and most importantly, the unparalleled beauty of its jewelry. With approximately 4000 pictures and over 250,000 words of text and descriptions, you will be taken step-by-step, decade by decade, through the development of the Napier style. As a collector, you will learn to recognize the findings, materials, and designs to appropriately circa-date the Napier jewelry in which you are investing. As a lover of jewelry, you will enjoy the drama and excitement of the trials, tribulations, and breakthroughs at each stage of the Napier journey. In the end, you will have a deep and lasting appreciation of the romantic story infused into the metal, gemstones, crystals, cabochons, and elegance of each piece of Napier jewelry that you own or are considering owning. On this journey, we will examine Napier’s role in the jewelry and fashion industries of which it was a part, especially the relationship between overall fashion trends and jewelry design. We will follow the development of the fashion industry as a whole, from the last quarter of the 19th century into the 21st century, with a particular focus on the 20th century, when fashion or costume jewelry entered a woman’s wardrobe as part of the necessary accoutrements of fashionable dress. As we guide you through the decades, you will learn how various social factors shaped the history of costume jewelry, including: • The influence of the Paris Salons, couture, and the various fashion “movements” whose popularity and competition drove the ever-changing styles. • The effects of technological and manufacturing breakthroughs, such as mass production, new materials and the affordability of jewelry on popular tastes. • The communication breakthroughs in mass media, which both spread conventional fashion standards faster and more broadly, but also allowed for the creation of more specialized markets and styles. • The impact of competition between jewelry manufacturing communities, firms and related industries, as well as the effects of governmental regulation and resource availability on what could be made, marketed, and sold as the latest fashion. • And much, much more.

“Not only is the book beautiful ... photos, color, layout and design and

paper, but is filled with an encyclopedia’s worth of information. Everyone should have this as part of their jewelry library.” Shelly Osborne

THE CONFECTIONARY: UNIQUE TREATS BY E DELECTABLE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE Photos courtesy of Eric Myers

I have loved Chocolate Mousse since I was a kid, I would order it whenever I could if we were out at dinner . I , also, have a few cookbooks

that are dedicated to Chocolate and other types of Mousse. A few weeks ago, it popped up in a daily email that I get and I thought I should get my recipe out of mothballs and make it again. I expanded the recipe to make enough for about 10 servings and served it as an unexpected extra for a breakfast that I catered last week and it was a tremendous hit. For this recipe, be sure that your refrigerated ingredients are cold when you start (especially the cream). For ease of cooking, and because I like to be organized, I pre-measure all of my ingredients and set them out so that things will go smoothly. This recipe is best if made a day ahead of time and should be kept refrigerated until ready to serve. If you serve it in individual portions, it is nice to top it with fresh whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. Ingredients: 1 Cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 Tbsp. Natural Vanilla extract 2 Tbsp. Coffee Liqueur (Kahlua®) 2 (16 oz.) Cups Whipping Cream 2 Tbsp. strong coffee ¼ Cup white sugar (I prefer baking sugar) 4 egg yolks lightly beaten ½ Cup whipped cream for garnish

Directions: 1. Melt Chocolate, Liqueur and coffee in a small heavy bottom saucepan over low heat until combined stirring constantly (about 5 minutes) 2. Add a small amount of the chocolate mixture to the egg yolks and mix together 3. Mix Egg yolk / chocolate mixture into the chocolate mixture in the pan stirring constantly. 4. Cook and stir for about 2 minutes until slightly thickened. 5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla 6|J u n e 2 0 1 4

6. Stir occasionally while cooking for about 10 minutes 7. Beat cream in a large bowl until it begins to thicken and then slowly add in sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Fold in the chocolate mixture to the whipped cream 8. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

*For a richer end result you can replace the coffee with more liqueur, but I prefer this lighter version.

WHY USE A TRAVEL AGENCY? By Martie Watson

I AM SURE THERE ARE MANY OF YOU WHO BOOK YOUR TRAVEL YOURSELF EITHER ONLINE OR DIRECT WITH THE VENDOR. For those of you who book direct or on-line I have a question for you? Why? Why spend your valuable

time searching when that is what we are here for? Do you call a plumber when you’re having problems with your plumbing or use an auto mechanic when you are buying a car or have something wrong with your car? Our travel agents are professionals in their field and we are here for you! One great thing about using our agents at Travel Leaders is that, as a general rule, we only charge for air-only reservations. That’s right you don’t have to pay us, we are paid by the vendor. Plus, you can book your entire trip, including your airfare, transfers and/or cruise or resort up to one year out and make payments on your trip at no additional charge! One of the biggest myths out there is that you can always find a better/cheaper deal online or directly through the vendor. Well the truth is that most of the time we can meet or beat what you are finding online if we are comparing apples to apples, we just need to know what you found. If you're using the Internet, you may end up booking your travel arrangements over a range of different websites and suppliers, located in different countries, and unconnected with each other. If something changes with just one of your bookings, all of the other arrangements will need to be adjusted by you, and any conflicts or mistakes might not be so obvious as if you had booked everything through a travel agency. And what if you book online who are you going to call when the hotel lost your reservations or your flight has just been cancelled? If you booked online - do you have someone to call, that will pick up the phone and go to bat for you? Our travel agents get to know you, learn about you, your approach to travel, what you like to see and do and how you like to do these things.

Why use a Travel Agency? (Continued)

Your True Colours

Vol. 1 Issue 2

We do ask a few personal things such as your travel budget and date of birth, but this information is needed so that the agent can make sure they are booking the best possible vacation for you. Our agents act as sounding boards, matching up what they know has worked for other travelers like you (and steering you away from things that look good on the Internet but which in reality aren't as good as they seem), and helping ensure you get to see and do the things that are best for you and your preferred style of travel. The travel agents with Travel Leaders are here for you to talk to; to answer your questions, and to help you 'get it right' when you plan your travels. No web application can do this the same way a person does. Still not convinced? Here is another reason to try using a travel agent. Booking your vacation should not become your second job. The internet is a wonderful tool for doing research on the type of vacation you want, but finding the “best deal can very quickly become a lot of work. That is our job, let us do that work. We get 10-15 faxes/emails a day about current specials, hotel sales, and last minute deals. Let us do the work for you and let us find the best vacation. Your travel agents at Travel Leaders provide you with a broader and more complete range of services than can be found on the Internet. And the ability to conveniently speak with a real person can make all the difference when you have a problem, or need some special advice or assistance. Summary Our travel agents at Travel Leaders continue to add valuable extra services to people like you, even in the Internet age. Many times we can help you in areas you haven't even thought about or were previously unaware of. Using a travel agent costs you very little -- if anything -- and in return they might not just save you money, but might also save your eagerly awaited vacation from potential pitfalls and problems. Travel Leaders is a full service travel agency with over 27 years of expertise in the travel industry and are a preferred travel agency with many of our vendors such as Sandals, Beaches, Walt Disney World, Delta Vacations, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and more.

FASHION CAREER SPOTLIGHT: MARGA LIESHOUTSIDERIUS: YTC IN THE NETHERLANDS In the year 2000 I was so lucky to be able to follow the last course George Pinkney, the co-founder of Fashion Academy, Gerrie Pinckney’s, son, gave in our country. Together with his assistant Shirley, they taught me and four others how to analyze skin tones with the undertone cards. In those days (and still) there are so very many different organizations in our little country that have their own system to analyze a person’s coloring. So, why did I choose to have the course of Your True Colours? Because of the six skin tone categories instead of four seasons, but even so, because of their slogan, at the time: ‘You look good, but you could look better’.

MARGA LIESHOUT-SIDERIUS APPLYING MAKEUP WITH CLIENTS

As I said, there are many color analysts here in The Netherlands, so it is important to have a specific profile when you are looking for clients. I chose to advise very personally. I do not like to do large groups. My strength is to reach my client directly and answer all their questions, even after the consult. Many of them come back with a family member or a friend; even more of them use the make- up with a lot of pleasure and order new make-up from time to time. 11 | J u n e 2 0 1 4

Your True Colours

Vol. 1 Issue 2

Fashion Career Spotlight: Marga Lieshout-Siderus (continued)

In order to let the clients try all of the make- up (of course only the right make-up for the right type), I organize ‘Try-moments’, very cheerful events. We open the boxes with the make-up and it always gives the feeling of a little girl in a toy store: grabble, grabble! They can try new colors; try out things they are not used to. Play with heavy colors. Or lipstick, when they never use it. Certainly, in a group, we have lots of fun because of the successes. Also, lots of laughs when too much make-up is used, or the client did not put it on in the right way. It is a nice manner of binding with your clients and a good way to sell make-up! A few years ago, my daughter, Mara, became a consultant as well and together we do smaller groups and have fun. We do make-up workshops at bachelor parties with a colour analysis for the bride. Also, larger groups (not more than 20 persons) in the ‘Try-moments’ we do together, Mara and I. We have a special arrangement for couples who are going to get married: before buying their wedding clothes, they can come to us to have a color analysis. Sometimes they are both warm and both cool, and the choices are easy. But, the challenge comes when one is cool and the other is warm! We advise about the colours that go with their skin undertones, and match each other, as well! Surprising results! One couple in this situation chose the same style, however in different metals; example, one in silver and one in gold. Another special moment for us is when we have a chemotherapy patient schedule an appointment.

Warm Colors bring out the redness in a Cool skin tone. (above) Cool Colors leave the skin even toned on a Cool skin tone. (right)

Fashion Career Spotlight: Marga Lieshout-Siderus (continued)

We advise them on the most flattering colors for the hats and scarfs to wear and how to use make- up to look less pale or tired. My business is small; I do not want to ‘go big’ because I think that the personal contact between consultant and client is very important. Every time that a happy client leaves, I am so glad that I could give them something joyful. And that I helped them to discover the beauty of something in their face; whether it is the eyes, skin, mouth, brows, whatever. Or just let them feel better by only using some make-up. Sometimes they leave excited because they saw that some color they thought did not flatter them, can do so much for them. Men are mostly surprised when we take them out of their usual suit, shirt, and ties; and put them in a new, more flattering color of suit, shirt, or tie. Some men are so stuck in one place, that they are shocked that there are colors other than black or blue suits and white shirts.

We are substance synonymous with style.

YTC GREAT FINDS: EDITOR’S CHOICE ON ALL PRODUCT’S: HONEST INFORMATION

I

By Carolyn Bendall cbendall@fashionacademy.biz GET REQUESTS CONSTANTLY TO REVIEW PRODUCTS , AND WHAT I REALLY LIKE ABOUT IT IS THAT I GET TO FIND NEW AND UPCOMING COMPANIES THAT ARE JUST TRYING TO MAKE IT . THOSE GREAT PIECES FROM ESTABLISHED COMPANIES , TOO .

A T THE SAME TIME , THERE ARE

H ERE I WILL SHOW YOU THE GREAT FINDS OF

THE MONTH FROM BOTH ARENAS .

Hairgomine Weightless Shine Smooth Styling Gel by Barex Italiana, is a great product that I have seen used over and over again in our makeovers; and I use it myself quite often. I have stick straight, baby fine hair and heavy anything on my hair just does not work. This is weightless, just as its name says. I’ve used other products that weigh my hair down, and I’ve looked in the mirror during the day and there is (ACK!) stuff in my hair…the product has dried and left little white pieces in my hair! You will NOT get that with Hairgomine. http://www.barex.it/en I do love CAbi (Carol Anderson by Invitation). It is a direct sale line, and you have to know a consultant to make a purchase. If you do not know a consultant, then you can go to the website ( www.cabionline.com ) and they will locate one for you. This Summer with their mid-season fashions, I ordered the “Printed Eliza”, a loose-fitting 100% polyester tunic with a fun floral print. It is a bit sheer, so a cami of some sort should be worn with it. CAbi does have cami’s, which are wonderful because they have adjustable straps. I have this blouse off long enough to put it in the laundry and wear it again. Tarte’s Pure Maracuja Oil is so cool. I don’t know what else to say about it. It’s my favorite, I love it! No matter the reason, if I’m in a store that has Tarte, and this tester is out, I’m ‘testing’ it. It softens cuticles like none other. What I really like is that there is no residue. If you are in a climate that is very dry, this is your skin saver. It isn’t cheap, and a little goes a LONG way. www.tartecosmetics.com

So, one of the ‘nerdiest’ items ever would be the various ways to keep track of glasses, with the eye glass chains. How about the cool glasses that has been made popular by ‘Sid Hammerback’ (Robert Joy) on CSI: NY. These glasses are worn by a friend of mine, she has the ‘cheaters’, however, they do prescription glasses, too. The coroner on CSI: NY has made these glasses so popular that if you put the search term “CSI: NY Coroner”, the search engines suggest “CSI: NY Coroner glasses”, really, do it if you don’t believe me! These glasses have the strap around the back of the frames, and have a handy magnet on the bridge of the glasses. They are just cool glasses! The brand is Clic, and they can be found at http://www.clicmagneticglasses.com . FC5 Cooling Foot Cream, by Arbonne, is amazing. Yes, it is amazing, absolutely amazing. Did I mention it is amazing? Well, it is. Consultants tout before and after pictures of rough dry cracked feet, and then smooth nice ones. This is reality. Yes, reality. Your feet can even be sore and achy, and this foot cream will help them cool down. I love it. You do have to know an Arbonne consultant, but again, the website will help you out in finding someone in your area. Or, you can contact me! www.arbonne.com Seersucker for men, it is Summer, and it’s time to bring out the Seersucker. Those up north, and out west may not be aware, but every true Southern Gentleman has a seersucker suit. Outside of the South in the United States, seersucker suits may not be the norm. So, to bring that little bit of summer seersucker into your life, try the shorts, the shirt, or a tie. It is classic, and never goes out of style. Color & You By Dawn Waldrop

Wouldn’t it be great to just pull out an outfit and just know it looks great and everything goes together? Have you ever wondered why you feel so good in certain colors? While other colors make you look tired. Have you experienced those days when someone asks, “Are you feeling okay?” You think to yourself, “I feel fine! Why are they asking me that?” Most likely, it was the color you were wearing. Color plays a very strong role in how you feel and look in your clothes. Knowing what colors look best on you, makes coordinating outfits a snap. When you wear colors that enhance your personal coloring you look healthier, younger and vibrant. People remember you instead of what you were wearing. What an exhilarating feeling to have people compliment you all the time. When you wear a color that does not enhance your personal coloring that is what people remember. Upon meeting someone our eyes scan that person from their feet to their face. The eye will automatically linger on the one item that does not enhance their appearance. One of those items is the color. There is a reason why you are most comfortable and gravitate to certain colors. Once you understand the why, you will no longer second guess yourself and no longer buy attire that hangs in the closet never to be worn. You will also find it easy to create new outfits with your existing attire. Each of us has hundreds of colors we can wear, so please do not think you are limited. So let’s look at why you look best in certain colors. You were born with your coloring and the undertone of your skin never changes. The undertone is several layers below the skin. The human body originates from red so everyone has some degree of red in their skin undertone. The degree of red undertone depends on the individual’s coloring. You were born with either yellow or blue mixed with that red undertone. The human body was put together so the skin undertone harmonizes with the eye color, pattern and your natural hair color. Think about what happens as we age. The skin lightens, the eyes fade in color and the hair turns gray. Notice how the skin, eyes and hair all lighten at the same time. It is so we look nice as we mature. Since the undertone never changes you look your best in your colors from birth to death. You instinctively feel better when wearing your colors. When you love what you are wearing you never ask someone how you look. It is when you are unsure of a color that you ask someone, “How does this look?” Hint, if you have to ask, it is not your color.

People will fall into one of six different color categories. Cool Violet, Cool Red, Cool Rose are those people who have the blue undertone in their skin. The Warm Golden, Warm Orange and Warm Tawny have the yellow undertone. Today we are only going to talk about the warms which have the yellow undertone and cools which have the blue undertone. We recommend learning more to determine your exact category by going to a Fashion Academy trained image consultant who specializes in color analysis. Many times you will see an outfit that has warm and cool colors mixed together? Here is a rule of thumb: Make sure the majority of the colors in the outfit are yours. If the outfit has half warm and half cool colors do not buy that article of clothing or accessory. Those are the items that hang in the closet not to be worn. They take up space and make it very difficult to see what you do have. Those are also the outfits that you just don’t know what to wear them with. With only your colors in the closet you will be able to see all the combinations you can create. As a child you instinctually knew your colors. Ask a three year old their favorite color and they will shout out their best color. Interesting it is always a color they look their best in. Gerri Pinckney, of Fashion Academy, was a pioneer in color analysis era. Twenty five years ago I was honored to be trained by Gerri. She studied the human body and the Albert Munsell color theory for years. She determined there was a pattern in how people were put together with their skin undertone, eye color and natural hair color from the time we are born. She categorized the color differences into the winter, summer, spring and autumn. Years later she realized there were two groups each being included in one of the other groups and they really needed to be separated. Note: she did not change the original color theory. She fine-tuned the categories. Now you hear Cool Violet, Cool Red (winters), Cool Rose (summer), Warm Golden, Warm Orange (springs) and Warm Tawny (autumn). Cool think blue undertone and warm think yellow undertone. The cool colors are blue based. The cool need these two basic colors in their closet at all times: black and navy blue. These two basic colors should be had in suits, dresses, pants and shoes. The cools hair colors range from dark brown to black, silver gray, light to dark ash brown or a white blonde. Examples of cools are: Michael Jackson, President Bill Clinton, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Oprah, Catherine Zeta Jones, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett. Here are just a few of the cool colors.

The warms are the yellow based colors. The warms need these two basic colors in their closet at all times: brown and medium navy blue. These two basic colors should be had in suits, dresses, pants and shoes. The warms hair colors range from golden blonde, light to medium golden brown, carrot red, strawberry blonde to reddish brown and deep chestnut brown with gold or auburn. Warms are: Drew Carey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brad Pitt, Robert Redford, Sophia Loren, Julia Roberts, Reba McEntire, and Drew Barrymore. Here are a few color choices for the warms.

Pets Are Kids Too!

Vol. 1 Issue 2

By Stacey Starks Budgeteers, if you have a pet, we all know it is part of the family, right? We spoil him/her to the ends of the earth and that can get expensive. I mean, between food, treats, toys, beds, and vet visits it all adds up! Well, I have a wonderful method I have been doing for YEARS that works wonderfully for my budget and I would love to share with you my little secret. BudgetSmartPlan.com Are you ready for this? GET YOUR PETS THEIR OWN CHECKING ACCOUNT!!!

23642 Lyons Ave. #221283 Newhall, CA 91322-1283 Telephone: 661-414-2437

Yep, you heard that right. What I do when I work my budget is put X amount of dollars into my pets’ account every week and I use that when I go to buy them food, etc. That way it doesn’t cut into my personal budget and I always know my babies are covered. The great thing is, you could go weeks or a month or two without buying your pets anything because they have all they need, and BOOM, before you know it, your pets’ checking account has a nice cushion to it. This is one of my favorite budgeting tricks and now that you have been let in on the little secret, I think it will become one of yours too! Happy Budgeting! Or as Fido would say, “Woof!”

ENTHUSIASM IS NOT ENGAGEMENT

Think Growth

By Bridget DiCello

If your team members are nodding their heads as you speak, and appear to clearly understand what you are saying with their response, "Yes, I understand," you are very possibly on the road to doing it all yourself.

If you want to get someone to engage, which typically means that they are taking initiative, getting things done, coming up with ideas and playing a key role in reaching goals, you must get them talking and taking action. There is a definite difference between enthusiasm and engagement. Enthusiasm can be displayed nonverbally, and with words of little substance and can be a great trait to display at many times in the workplace. However, enthusiasm often includes you speaking and being the center of attention in order to share that excitement and movement and on its own does not get anything done. Get them to talk. People think, engage and learn when they are talking, not when you 'explain it again.' As a leader, you may feel you need to have all the answers and come into a conversation prepared to address a team member's challenges and objections. When really, what you need to walk into the conversation with is:

1. A clear picture of what you are trying to achieve, coupled with your expertise and experience 2. A strong desire to understand their view of the situation 3. A genuine interest in determining where the holes are in their picture, and 4. A determination to get them talking about the situation to hear their fears, beliefs and planned approach.

Get them to act. Often the first step is the hardest to determine and to take. When you think someone knows what to do, and how to get started, take a moment to test their understanding in a supportive way. You may ask, "What is the first step? What do you think will be the most difficult part? When will you have that first step done?" Then, schedule a time to check in on progress. A definite deadline for the first step will ensure the ball gets rolling, and once it does, it is often easier to keep it rolling, especially with your assistance as necessary and accountability to agreed upon actions. Be enthusiastic! And be determined to drive real engagement with the way you engage your team members in conversation where they are thinking, talking, and getting prepared to act and taking action.

trade allows one pair of high heels to create any number of pairs. The inspiration for the brand was a day of active women's life called "Woman on the go". Office work, lunch, dinner or meeting with friends present same problem: How can she fit all shoes for all occassions in one bag? With MYS shoes, it’s not a problem! Just find a place for a little box with interchangeable accessories. In the configurator "MYS design" (the tool to create the shoes, on the website) you can choose the model, color, perfect height, the shape and of course of the placing on the "MYS link for interchangeable accessories. All components are manufactured with the highest quality, extraordinary comfort of use, and the greatest price. All accessories are made exclusively of unique materials and components such as Dolce & Gabbana, Swarovski Crystals, amber handmade setting of steel or copper - all under the Polish designers and artists eye. THE NEW ECONOMY By Ana Hawk

WHEN

YOU THINK OF USING TRADE IN YOUR BUSINESS YOU’RE PROBABLY

THINKING OF THE LAST TIME YOU ATTEMPTED TO CREATE A ONE - TO- ONE AGREEMENT WITH ANOTHER VENDOR FOR A SPECIFIC JOB OR OCCASION, USING GOODS OR SERVICES AS PAYMENT INSTEAD OF CASH, RIGHT ? While this type of

agreement can work, more than often, it does not. One or the other party winds up feeling as if they put more time or effort or value into the agreement than the other. And yet, corporations use trade all the time, quite legally and ethically, to not only build their businesses but to enjoy perks such as jets, vacations, cars and more. How do they do it? Instant Barter, LLC is teaching businesses and every-day citizens how to tap into and leverage trade every day. What does it look like? Rather than trading time, services or products, the value of those tradable goods is turned into Trade Dollars at a $1 for $1 ratio. So, “A” may have something that is worth$300 to trade, “B” may have something worth $100 to trade, and “C” may have something worth $1,000 to trade. Could they work together easily in a standard trade relationship? Not likely, and definitely not easily. But turning the value of those items into Trade Dollars Allows that value to be traded just like cash. Now imagine that ability to trade expanded to 100,000s of businesses around the world in an online, searchable marketplace that is easily tapped into. What happens?

ANA HAWK, CEO/FOUNDER, INSTANT BARTER, LLC

A couple approaches INSTANT BARTER about helping with their wedding. We handle the flowers, rings, dress, tux, music, cake, caterer, photographer, video, venue and even a photo booth for fun! How much did we just save this couple and their families, thousands! It is a simple example of using the power of trade to have a better event while not breaking your bank account. We can do this with any event, business or even for private individuals. INSTANT BARTER has even worked on movies expanding their budget to help them out as well. That’s just one example. There are thousands of examples every day of people being able to buy gifts for themselves, family, friends and clients, take care of medical issues, and buy cars and much more! “Barter is a powerful tool if it is used correctly,” Ana Hawk (CEO/Founder of www.instantbarter.com) is always saying. “Expanding your mind and accepting a different economy is just smart business in this or any economy,” Hawk says, “We want to explain to people that in the 70’s-80’s, in the heyday of business, when everything was bonus, just for doing a good job. What most people do not realize is that was all trade! It does not matter what the economy is doing, you can have that life-style now for you, your family, and especially for your business and employees.”

The New Economy (Continued)

What Instant Barter is finding now is that people have a lot of questions about how barter works. “Barter is the original economy, having started civilization. People just need to see it as the currency it is. The true definition of currency is something you and I agree has value and we trade,” Hawk says. Imagine an entire generation of kids growing up knowing how to leverage trade and save their cash.” Barter is growing like wildfire, too. Instant Barter, LLC is just over three years old and yet is already in 11 countries around the world. To truly serve their customers and help people make the most out of their trade dollars, Instant Barter is expanding their corporate offices into new regions, training more quality representatives and offering even more opportunities to take barter to the next level. The ‘Barter as a powerful tool in business and life’ is coming soon; an accredited training course for businesses to learn how to leverage trade to grow their business. It includes modules on taxes, case studies and more. It will be available online, as well as in-person in select areas, and provides students with one credit hour of college level credit in business. Growth for Instant Barter means new opportunities for its clients and customers, as well. Partnerships are being formed to bring in airline tickets, furniture, and additional perks that were once only available to large corporations. There’s also the start of filming for a TV pilot, to show people how to use and utilize what they have to get what they need. While the cash economy makes a sluggish come-back, there is a new economy that has been healthy and strong, and is only getting stronger. Trade is the original economy. Today, it is a recognized form of currency that is acknowledged and accepted by the IRS and has stood up under scrutiny in court. And, it’s available to you to start building the life you’ve been dreaming of—without having to wait for the rest of the economy to catch up. Contact www.instantbarter.com for a free 15-minute assessment of what you can trade, what you should trade and how it could dramatically impact your life in a massively positive way. PURGE YOUR CLOSET & ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS FOR 2014! Shelley Menduni, brand strategist & image consultant Professional Imagery, LLC

Ever stand in front of your closet and find yourself saying “I have nothing to wear?” It’s stressful and un-necessary. So this is the perfect time of year to take steps to guarantee that you look fabulous and feel confident every time you get dressed! Dressing for success starts in your closet, so let’s take some positive steps that you can make today to make a difference. Declutter your space & you declutter your thoughts. Amazing things happen when you create a new space – new ideas will flow, a more confident and vibrant YOU will emerge. So let’s get started: Purge your closet: • • •

Get rid of everything that doesn’t fit! “Too small” can be stored in the basement for your future victory. Get rid of everything that is out of style Get rid of everything that is not in season. Putting your off-season clothes in storage frees up space & gives you a visual break from your clothes, therefore you don’t get sick of them. It will be like a new wardrobe when you bring everything back next season. You can store your off season clothes in a guest closet, in storage containers that fit under the bed, in suitcases. If you use storage containers & place them in the basement, place a few pieces of chalk in a clothes bag to absorb moisture. Get rid of stuff that is worn out. This includes out of shape sweaters, tops with yellow armpit stains, faded t-shirts (you only need a few for yard work).

Call for backup: Recruit a friend, who will be honest, another set of eyes can help you move much faster. Divide & Conquer: Never pull everything out of your closet all at once. You’ll run out of time, motivation or both. Instead, set a timer for 15-20 minutes and try to get through one section at a time – like your jeans or your tops, suits, etc. Be savvy about your rejects: Once it’s a “no”, be ready to move it out. You can donate your suits to Dress for Success, a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged women suit up for job interviews. DSF is a 49 | J u n e 2 0 1 4

nationwide affiliate. You can take your worn once cocktail dress to a secondhand store. If it’s in good condition, fashionable, and in season you could get about 15% of the retail price when it sales. Host a clothes-swap party! Get together with friends around your size. Choose What Stays: Be smart about what goes – there are classic pieces you’ll hold on to forever, like a classic leather jacket. But beware: Ask yourself this one important question: “If you saw it in a store today, would you buy it?” Frequently when I have helped clients discern what to keep/what to don ate I can separate pieces and reuse then to create a new outfit. For example, dispose of the jacket with shoulder pads, but use the sheath dress with a different jacket. You would be pleasantly surprised how you will be able to “shop from your closet” once things have been organized differently. Get Crafty with hooks: Hooks are everything in a closet. I recommend 3M Command adhesives rather than nails. They keep items that can be hung off the floor and help you see more of your accessories and bags. Place a hanger on a hook, then drape scarves or belts side by side on it. Link a set of shower curtain rings, then hang the top one from a hook. Slide items that can be draped, like tees, through each to maximize vertical space. Personalize in a snap: Use clear plastic shoe boxes for accessories, small tank tops, shorts, etc. Group, Group, Group: Grouping like with like enables you to find items quickly. All slacks together, Jackets, skirts, long-sleeved tops, etc. Dump the wire hangers: No wire hangers, ever! They ruin clothes and are only meant to be temporary. Try using all the same type to create an appealing consistent look in your closet. Contact Shelley today to create your signature presence! Corporate & executive consulting, individual personal consultations, speaking engagements Shelley@professionalimagery.com 614-325-8550

Hanger trick: When you get out your spring clothes, put the hangers in backward on the rod but then when you wear a piece of clothing, hang it up facing the front. At the end of the season you’ll know what you’ve never worn.

Now, step back & admire your fresh, newly organized closet. Enjoy getting dressed with confidence. Still feeling overwhelmed? I can discern, organize and work magic to transform your closet. I can show you how to “shop from your closet” & discover multiple “new” outfits created from the “old”. Most people can’t afford to buy a new wardrobe but they can work with what they have and “enhance”.

SHERRI HENLEY INTELLIGENCE Q & A Q: Does your social media professionalism (or lack of) speak to decision makers? A: The answer is a resounding “Yes!” Positive or negative…your online postings will carry a message to anyone who is watching or participating. Is your message upstanding or are you chronologically listing your unseemly thoughts and actions on a worldwide billboard? If you converted your Facebook profile presence from personal to professional before the initial rollout of Timeline…you may have been shocked to realize that ALL your posts were visual since the beginning of your Facebook journey – backtrack and you will see what I am talking about! Other platforms are working to unveil your past as well…so manage your mouse and pay attention unless you want your reality show to replay unedited. Your words will make you or break you. Posted images will define who you are. Thoughts and intentions that reveal your mindset will speak to your potential boss or client in a way that only YOU decide. Sure…speak your mind. Just make sure the thoughts that live there are conducive to professional behavior when spoken. How do you ensure professional postings? Ask yourself these questions before posting: 1.

Will this post be uplifting, encouraging or educational?

2.

Does this post convey the message I want to share?

3.

Would I want my Mother to read this?

4. If my Boss or Clients were my “Friend” online…would I post this status? 5. Does this portray the autobiography I wish to write and leave as a legacy? 6.

Would this post attract a valuable client?

7.

Would I want my words to appear in national headlines tied to my photo?

YOUR TRUE COLOURS – LIFE IMAGE WHERE DID YOUR DAY GO? All of a sudden it is 5:00pm and the day is over. Whether you are at home all day or at work, what are you doing with your time? Learning to prioritize what the real needs of the day are will help in trying to organize your day. What are the most important things you must do today? List them first; then the next most important items. Are there items that have a deadline? They are on the top of the list, unless the deadline is far off. I have a deadline for the magazine, however, I receive articles and ads throughout the month. As I receive the items, I put them into the issue. Then, the actual deadline day, I have only about half the work to do. What are the inner personal items that need to get done, to even get you started? Meditation? Scripture reading? Yoga? Set the time for those tasks, and stay as close to the schedule as possible to achieve them.

The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. Stephen Covey http://www.brainyquote.com

What are the everyday chores that need to be done? Put dinner in the crock pot? Unload or load the dishwasher? Laundry? Make cookies for the bake sale? All of these items need to be on the schedule, too. What are the items that might not make it on the list? A child that needs comforting. A spouse that had a bad day and needs a listening ear that isn’t busy with washing dishes. The phone call to take dinner to a friend coming home from a day at the emergency room. Life has interuptions, and how we handle those interuptions determine on whether or not our day goes well. Realizing that there are some items on the list that can wait until a little later that day, or even the next day, will ease the anxiety we sometimes feel when we just don’t get it all done. So, the challenge for this month, make a list, preferably the night before so that you don’t stay awake thinking of everything that needs to be on that list!

History The University of Fashion was founded and developed by Francesca Sterlacci, a New York fashion designer, educator and author. Her mission is to preserve the art and craft of fashion design by bringing together the best fashion industry professionals to create lessons that inspire and educate students, teachers, home sewers and the fashion curious. As a tenured professor and chairperson at New York City’s famed Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) for 14 years and as an online instructor at the Academy of Art University San Francisco for 6 years, Francesca has tremendous experience in effectively teaching fashion education. How We Do It The University of Fashion has been in development for over 5 years. Before the first frame was shot, we conducted surveys and held focus groups with high school and college students and teachers, with home sewers, and with members of the fashion community. With their input we prioritized which lessons to film. We categorized each into one of the five fashion design disciplines of Draping, Pattern Making, Sewing, Fashion Art and Product Development. After carefully choosing the best fashion college professors and industry professionals we made several pilot lessons and then tested them to be sure that they were easy to follow and that they produced great results Universityoffashion.com.

UNIVERSITY OF FASHION SPOTLIGHTS TALENT & WORK FASHION DRAWING, DRAPING & PATTERN MAKING, AND SEWING The University of Fashionâ was founded in 2008. It was inspired by Francesca Sterlacci’s desire to utilize online Internet technology as a supplement to traditional teaching techniques and to inspire and educate tomorrow’s fashion designer, merchandiser and entrepreneur.

The University of Fashion is an online fashion design video library created by designer/author/educator, Francesca Sterlacci. As a professor and former chair of the Fashion Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology and as a graduate level instructor at the Academy of Art University, Francesca’s mission was find a way to preserve the art & craft of fashion design. By utilizing Internet technology and bringing together the best fashion industry professionals, she has created the largest fashion design video library that is inspiring and educating tomorrow’s fashion designer, merchandiser and entrepreneur. The U of F library is offered to the general public via monthly and yearly subscriptions and is also featured in college and public libraries. To encourage their students, they launched a Student Spotlight Contest in April. People submitted work that they learned from watching U of F videos. Winners were chosen for each of the 4 fashion design disciplines: Draping, Pattern making, Fashion Drawing and Sewing. Seventy-six submissions later, the judges had their work cut out for them. The experts judging the work were Sterlacci and Kara Laricks, first season winner of the hit TV show ‘Fashion Star’, who is also the U of F’s Social Media Coordinator.

Rafael de Pena exhibited his talent through fashion drawing, earning him the top prize in that category. de Pena tells us, “Art is not my hobby; it is my way of life.” He graduated from The High School of Art & Design and then attended The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Currently living in Jamaica, de Pena says “fashion pumps through his body and inhabits his thoughts.” From illustration to garment construction, de Pena is infatuated with fashion. He names knitwear designer, Shirley Paden, as his “fashion mother” and inspiration. We think she would be very proud.

Kathryn Butler, currently a fashion design student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, won for Sewing. She has always had a love of fashion and was self-taught in design and garment construction before attending FIT. Butler says that although starting school for fashion design has been a challenge as she is learning the “right” way to do things, she loves the push and is successfully wrapping up her first semester of school. Butler finds the U of F videos useful when she needs to review something learned in class, or just needs greater clarification on how to execute a particular skill. She says that design school has pushed her to explore her creativity on a new level and the University of Fashion’s tutorials help her to complete garments that are more complicated than anything she has done in the past.

Chanica Pitaksakorn is from Bangkok, Thailand and a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She is the winner in two categories of the Student Spotlight contest. Pitaksakorn is new to the United States and when her notes from class are not as accurate as she would like, she uses the University of Fashion videos to DRAPED BODICE

supplement her learning. For example, although she notes that she is doing well in her draping class and understands working in 3D form, she used the Straight Skirt Sloper and Princess Bodice video to clear up her remaining questions following class. The result of her watching the videos is an impressively, immaculate final product. As the Pattern Making winner, Pitaksakorn took great care to label the Bishop Sleeve she patterned. She also demonstrated her knowledge of the “slash and spread method in order to create volume in her sleeve.

ALLISTYLE WAS THE BRAINCHILD OF ALLI SHAPIRO WHO ALONG WITH PAM SHAINHOUSE, HER MOTHER, REALIZED THAT THERE WAS LITTLE AVAILABLE FOR THE PLUS SIZE MARKET THAT WAS NOT CHEAP, FRUMPY, MADE OF POLYESTER AND FROM OUTSIDE OF CANADA. At the time of inception, Alli had been suffering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma since 1999 experiencing different bouts of weight gain and loss. She had difficulty finding clothing that she would wear and even cried when she went shopping. Alli passed away in July 2006, leaving Pam with the vision to continue on her legacy. Four years later, Pam began working on Allistyle, and when Whitney Thompson, the winner of America’s Next Top Model, signed on to become the face of the line, the line began to take flight. Throughout the past year Allistyle has moved from just producing plus size to producing all sizes. They believe that “great style has no size”. Their Brand is inclusive, natural, intelligent fashion. Allistyle is made in Canada, with the fabric imported from the Orient. The viscose from bamboo and organic cotton fabric is milled in Canada. The characteristics of the line are simplicity, comfort, and sophistication, travel friendly and classic. Allistyle does not advocate large shapeless dressing, but clothing that hugs your curves providing a gorgeous silhouette. Their collections all work with each other. You can take one of their spring summer collection, put on a jacket and wear it during the fall. Their colours work well together and they also concentrate on trend fashion selections. Allistyle is a social enterprise where a percentage of net proceeds will support Alli's Journey, a registered charity which supports young adults with cancer. WHETHER THROUGH MUSIC OR CONVERSATION, JILL DYSON IS COMING FROM THE

HEART

CHRISTIAN

WITH

HER

FAITH LEADING

THE WAY. This award-winning singer/songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee is a wife and mother of three, leads events through her ministry, Founder of SweeT-Shirts and Founder & Executive Director of Angel Street. When I spoke with Jill I asked with all the things going on in her life where would she want the emphasis for this article. I was thinking she would talk about her music since she has a beautiful voice, has written wonderful moving songs, has won regional talent competitions and placed third with the Gospel Music Association for her original song “Stop and Pray.” No hesitation from her – she started talking about the girls she works with at SweeT-Shirts and Angel Street. Jill started SweeT-shirt, a women’s custom shirt project, with a portion of the profits going to Oasis of Hope, an organization that helps support an under resourced area of North Memphis. They now employ young women living in inner-city Memphis for the production of the t-shirts and products. Her newest project, Angel Street, is a non–profit project through Oasis of Hope to provide musical education for young women from the same area of North Memphis. At present, they have a small choir and you could hear the pride in Jill’s voice as she spoke of them. In addition to expanding the choir, future plans include vocal and piano lessons as well as other things she said she’s not ready to let out of the bag yet. Jill Dyson Ministries also holds events as scheduled for your women’s group. These include worship leading, event skits, original songs and, of course, customized T-shirts made at your location on the day of the event. If you are interested in booking an event for your group, you can find information at www.jilldyson.com. With all the talk about her two projects and the young ladies in the two groups as well as the wonderful people working with her on the projects, Jill took little credit for herself. I guess she feels, as do I, that the music speaks for itself.

WEARING HISTORY: JEWELRY AS A CONVERSATION PIECE Melinda L. Lewis 74 | J u n e 2 0 1 4

Your True Colours

Vol. 1 Issue 2

YOU WALK INTO A ROOM NOT KNOWING A SOUL, SLOWLY MAKING YOUR WAY TOWARD THE STEWARD SERVING CHAMPAGNE. You take a sip and hope

to relax into the setting, when a nicely dressed woman compliments you on your brooch. “Thank you,” you answer, which would usually be a sufficient response, but you gaily add, “It is from the 1940s!” and a conversation ensues. This is the life of the jewelry collector. Deeply ingrained in a collector’s psyche is a love of the history and provenance for jewelry. Hence, delight is taken at every opportunity to offer mini history lectures when approached by an admirer. For the shy, this is a fun icebreaker and an opening to be social. Vintage jewelry is a conversation piece and most pieces have multiple stories to tell; stories about who manufactured it, who designed it, the celebrities who wore it or promoted the line, and the cultural sentiments of the time it was made. A piece of jewelry speaks volumes. By wearing it, you can unveil your own story about why it speaks to you. “SWEETHEART PIN” MANUFACTURED IN THE EARLY 1940S BY NAPIER.

Vintage jewelry attracts because it is intriguing. The handmade artistry and quality of workmanship speaks for itself. Modern reproductions try, but most fail to capture the ethereal quality of vintage pieces. Perhaps it is because of the many hands which were involved in the making of a single piece; old-world-skill lost to bygone days. Or, perhaps, it is because it is a part of our heritage. 75 | J u n e 2 0 1 4

Wearing History (Continued)

Vol. 1 Issue 2

Jewelry has its own language that expresses, mimics, and reflects the many cultures that inspired it—its social attitudes, its technologies, as well as everything in-between—from rings to necklaces, bracelets or earrings, jewelry can unveil a story, not only about the person who most likely wore it, but what was transpiring during production. From lost loves, to forms of protest or even wartime patriotism, costume jewelry was the democratic voice. A woman could go down to her local Five and Dime, and for 25 cents purchase a victory brooch, or she could walk into Altman’s or Saks and spend a few dollars to wear the latest necklace style to complement her new frock. Both pieces made a statement. By wearing and sharing these historical artifacts, we open a window to our past celebrations and defeats, and sometimes expressed prejudices—it serves both to commemorate triumphs, to mourn our losses or air our grievances. VINTAGE BAKELITE "VICTORY" PIN, C. 1940S.

When we study jewelry, we are studying the heartbeat of our national character with all its flaws and inherently good characteristics. Today, jewelry historians have a vast array of resources with newly accessible archives that give an even broader sense of our country’s past. And the history of American costume jewelry goes back to the founding of our country. From the original immigrants who brought their skills and communities to the New World, new traditions and industries were built. Costume jewelry into the 20th century chronicles both culture and technology. For example, The Napier Co., one of the oldest American costume jewelry manufacturers, was one business rich with history and pride. Starting in 1878 as The E. A. Bliss Co, the roots of its heritage are traced to family members in the trade generations before its commencement. Its impact on jewelry and fashion was felt decade on decade in the 20th century—with perhaps its greatest contributions in the 1950s

through the 1980s. It was on the fore-front of fashion and style, and its pieces tell the story of America in brass, sterling, white metal, and glass. Celebrities, socialites, the girl next door, and even royalty across the transatlantic wore Napier jewelry. By following the history of costume jewelry through companies such as The Napier Co., one can chronicle the changing landscape of American culture, and learn the stories behind the pieces of art we wear.

I HAVE A BI-RACIAL CHILD, HOW DO I CARE FOR HER HAIR? The Beauty Detective, Marjorie Edwards All Photos Courtesy of Marjorie Edwards

I see so many bi-racial children with poorly conditioned hair. Their Mothers, who do not have African-American hair, are often challenged with caring for their children’s locks. Before your baby is born, one should begin researching how to care for their hair.

MARJORIE EDWARDS, 'THE BEAUTY DETECTIVE'

This article, hopefully, may even help you care for your hair better. Hair is not just hair. Your health can be diagnosed via your hair. Hair is pretty unique. It is similar to dieting; what will make one person lose weight, may not help another. First, we need to find out what our hair likes, it will tell you by how it reacts to how you treat it.

Your baby’s hair may start out straight or with big curls, but by a year old you will notice a change in the churl pattern. Depending on how much the curl pattern changes, will depend on what you will need to do. If your child’s hair turns really kinky, or you may say, fuzzy, it will need conditioning. Your shampoo may be for oily hair, but your child’s hair may be dry. If you want to save money, buy a shampoo for all hair types. Your child’s hair will always need deep conditioning whenever you shampoo it. Dry hair should never be brushed as a way to bring out the shine. You will be destroying the hair. That is true for you, too; if you are not using a boar’s brush. You may want to use a brush to flatten out the hair for a pony tail or an up-do, otherwise, brushing is a no-no. One of the first tools you need to purchase is a wide tooth comb. When combing, start from the end, combing short pieces of the hair and gradually move up toward the scalp. To protect tender heads, hold the hair tightly in your fist just above the section you are combing, following this procedure all the way up to the roots. If you just start combing from the roots to the ends, it can be painful and destructive to the hair. To keep the hair under control after shampooing and conditioning, I recommend section off, and loose braiding the hair to get it ready to style. If you do this while it is still wet it is easier to comb and prepare 78 | J u n e 2 0 1 4

Have a Bi-Racial Child, How Do I Care for Her Hair? (Continued)

for styling. To flat iron her hair, it is easier if it is sectioned off by loose braiding than blow drying each section, you can add a little coconut oil to the hair for shine as you get to each section to seal in the moisture. You will need a flat iron that will get at least to 450 degrees. The braiding is only to have control of the hair otherwise you have this big bush that keeps gathering. Braiding it allows you to style it in sections. For instance if you were flat ironing you can do a section at a time without the hair constantly gathering up and getting in the way of you trying to style it. Hair comes in four (4) categories, 1, 2, 3, and 4. Straight is ‘1’. Very loose curl pattern is ‘2’. A curl shaped in a deep ‘S’ is a ‘3’. A coil curl is a ‘4’. If you child’s hair has a coil like pattern, that is very dry hair and needs intense care. A ‘kiddie perm’ is not the answer to category 4 hair, it is very destructive, especially since the hair is already very dry. Instead, shampoo and condition it correctly, and most of the work is done. Coconut Oil applied and left in the hair will condition it and bring out the shine. WELLNESS: CLEANSES By Kally Efros

D O YOU NEED MORE ENERGY ? A RE YOU FEELING SLUGGISH ? D O YOU FIND YOURSELF REACHING

FOR

CAFFEINATED

BEVERAGES

AND ENERGY DRINKS JUST TO GET THROUGH THE DAY ?

Your system may be clogged with an excess of ‘trash’. Many years ago the New York City Trash Engineers went on strike. The trash in New York piled up everywhere. Can you imagine the smell and the mess? Guess what also increased? Rats! The rats came because of the trash. Many people thought the problem was the RATS. They started looking for solutions to deal with them. A difficult job as long as there was a good supply of food for them in the trash. The REAL PROBLEM was the excess trash piling up everywhere. Get rid of trash - you get rid of the rats. Simple: go to the root of the problem. We all know this. If you constantly leave food out in your kitchen you will attract some critters you don't want from the insect kingdom. Our bodies are the same. The more trash and toxins we have in our bodies, the more the scavengers come to get the trash. What is the simple solution to this problem? Get the trash and toxins out of the body. You have your organs of elimination that were designed to get rid of the toxins and trash in your body. They are: skin, lungs, kidneys, liver, lymphatic system, and the bowels. Depending on your lifestyle and due to our environment those organs get overwhelmed. We accumulate an excess of toxins from our food, water, air, and environment. We are exposed to an onslaught of toxins from many sources. These organs are working overtime to keep up. According to several studies as reported by Organic Consumers Association,

industrial farming is giving us less nutritious food*. We are also getting a ton of chemicals and pesticides. Processed food is trash for our bodies and requires extra work to protect the body. Very few water sources that we drink are as nature intended and most have been treated with unhealthy chemicals and still contains toxins, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. This year I have seen a dramatic increase in airborne allergy symptoms, and I live in the country. Large cities regularly post warnings for air quality. It doesn’t matter where you are, you are breathing in airborne toxins. Our bodies and organs of elimination benefit from regular cleansing routines and detoxes. You'll even hear Dr. Oz and Oprah talking about the need to detox. worradmu

In New York, when the trash piled up on the roads, it created traffic jams. Things slowed down. We do the same, when we get 'clogged up' we have more phlegm, more inflammation, and more dis-ease in our bodies. We can feel weighed down, sluggish, lacking in energy and tired all the time. Other symptoms in the body that may indicate a need to detox are: weight gain, hormone imbalance, nausea, digestive complaints, high cholesterol, headaches, skin problems, food sensitivities, and aches and pains in the body. Over time, our body will accumulate toxins. These toxins can negatively affect all the internal organs and cause disorders in the body's systems. Periodic cleansing of the body can increase energy and vitality, improve your libido, aid the body in healing and reduced sick time, improved digestion, improved eyesight, and help with weight loss and increase longevity. Cleansing and nourishing the body through the use of herbs, whole food and water is the backbone of good health. Many people do a cleanse in the spring for a 'Spring Clean'. Others do a detox three or four times a year.

When your body is overwhelmed in getting out the trash - disease sets in. Give your body the tools it needs to keep you healthy.

Here are some ideas for detoxing the body. You may want to consult an expert for advice on specific cleanses for you. There can be some side-effects which are the result of toxins being flushed from the body. There are some supplements you can take to help minimize these reactions. Please consult with your natural health care practitioner for support with this. As always, consult with your doctor before making major changes to your lifestyle or if you have a serious health condition requiring medication and medical attention. • Make the best food choices you can and get plenty of good, nourishing food. Eliminate as much processed, chemical ridden food as possible. A properly well balanced diet contains nutrients to help the body make repairs and provide the fuel the body needs to work efficiently. • Drink plenty of water to flush toxins out. If possible, filter your water. • Exercise regularly to keep the lymphatic system moving and improve breathing function. • Breathe deeply several times a day. KEKO64

• Lighten your toxic load as much as possible.

• Dry skin brushing is a simple and effective way to assist the skin in detox. • Massage therapy helps move toxins out of the lymph system. • Drinking fresh squeezed lemon first thing in the morning stimulates the digestive system and supports the liver. • Take probiotics to create a healthy bowel environment. • Get plenty of rest at night so that the liver can breakdown excessive hormones and the body can make repairs to the system. • Reduce your stress. • Incorporate Yoga, Qigong, and/or Meditation. • Herbal cleanses. • Colonics, enemas, and coffee enemas. • Colon cleansing high fiber supplements. • Fasting. 92 | J u n e 2 0 1 4

I know I always feel so much better and have more energy when I do a detox program. You can easily work in some simple steps to your daily routine to assist your body’s detox program and periodically do some deeper cleanses. Seriously who couldn’t benefit from a massage occasionally? When you experience and increase in energy, you’ll be glad you did. Personally I was shocked years ago at my increase in energy when I began to eliminate the toxins from my environment and do some detoxes. My goal was weight loss and better health. But I had so many more benefits. That is me and my husband Mark after we just completed a week long kayaking trip. It was actually my first time to go kayaking. I was in my late 30’s and honestly I never felt better in my life. Before then, I rarely had any energy. I was napping all the time, relied on caffeine to get through the day, and was dealing with many health concerns. I had enough, so I consulted with a naturopath and began my journey to healing and that journey included many of the Efros steps outlined above. It really does make a difference. I no longer need any caffeine just to get through the day, I don’t need naps, and I have tons of energy. This is not intended to diagnose or prescribe. Please seek medical attention for any health challenges you may have. *http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_18006.cfm

FASHION ACADEMY ENDORSEMENTS Each month we will highlight those products or services that we have endorsed. There is a process to be considered for an endorsement.

Lumavera Skin Care is the first skin care company to receive a Fashion Academy endorsement. All natural products, the product itself has a shelf life of one year, because of the naturalness of the products. The skin care is soft, beautiful, and works. I’ve used lines that were more expensive and lines that are less; by far, this line is wonderful. The Facial Cleansing Gel is gentle, yet will clean even eye makeup. ‘Vita Veggie blend” of antioxidant-dense vegetables nourish the skin, and I honestly do not know how. What counts is, I know my skin is beautiful while using it. The Perfection Peel is outstanding. It says ‘peel’, but not really, not in the sense that all of us think ‘peel’. You wash it off with a damp cloth, and you face never feels tight or dried out. Yet, it deep cleans all the bothersome little issues we get. Then, add to that the Oxygenating Masque, and you have a perfect combination. Lumavera uses plant stem cell technology to draw out of the plants their ingredients; using as a base David Vargas’s, the CEO/Founder, family recipes handed down over generations. You can find more information about Lumavera on their website: www.lumavera.com The products are found in salons and spas. We are very happy to give Lumavera and David Vargas our endorsement.
