Dear Readers,
We end this year as we always do, with a celebration of all things merry and bright with this, our annual Holiday Issue. Every year when we come to the last step of sending this magazine to press, we definitely do rejoice in this office! The reality is our work is not done. We have what is always the busiest month of the year–December. Whew! I love it and hate it at the same time. I am never adequately prepared, and I always promise myself to let go of the unimportant things and truly enjoy the season for the reason.
This year, we celebrate Christmas for the first time without my father. It will no doubt have its share of heartaches felt amidst the light and love of family together praising the birth of Christ and rejoicing in our father's life and memory. I wish the same for you and yours; that amidst any strife, tears or fear, that you can find that star on Christmas Eve and remember what all started in a manger became the greatest story ever told. The story of hope and love in this world–and the gift of the belief in something greater than ourselves.
Merry Christmas, Williamson County!
From all of us here at YOUR Williamson: Shelly, Johnny, Anna, Katie, Christian, Emma, Dominique, LaQuita, John and Erin

Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial September 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.
VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys
on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
Christmas Merry

here’s something truly special about celebrating the holidays in Colonial Williamsburg. It’s like stepping back in time, where the charm of Christmas mingles with the echoes of our nation’s beginnings.
Once the bustling capital of Virginia, Williamsburg was the political, cultural, and educational hub of the colonies from 1699 to 1780. It’s a place steeped in history –where debates about liberty and independence sparked a revolution and where diverse stories, including those of enslaved individuals and Indigenous people, shaped the nation’s foundations.
Thanks to the restoration efforts led by Rev. Dr. W.A.R. Goodwin and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1926, this vibrant town has been transformed into a living history museum. And during the holiday season, Williamsburg becomes even more magical when it becomes a captivating winter wonderland, blending historical charm with festive cheer.
Visitors strolling along the cobblestone streets are greeted by meticulously crafted decorations that adorn the historic buildings, accurately reflecting eighteenth-century traditions. The harmonious sounds of carolers and the warm glow of cresset lanterns illuminate the pathways, creating an inviting and nostalgic atmosphere.
The Christmas spirit in Williamsburg is undeniable, with festive activities and traditions that offer a unique opportunity to experience the holidays through the lens of colonial history, making a visit to Colonial Williamsburg during the Christmas season truly unforgettable.
PLAN YOUR HOLIDAY TRIP TO COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG:
GRAND ILLUMINATION: On December 7th, 14th and 21st, experience an enchanting celebration as Colonial Williamsburg lights up the night sky above the historic capital. This eighteenth-century-inspired event features spectacular fireworks displays from the Capitol and the Governor's Palace, complemented by musical performances across the charming streets.
WILLIAMSBURG LODGE GINGERBREAD DISPLAY: Unveiling at the end of November, this delightful display showcases the creativity of the pastry team in the front lobby of the Williamsburg Lodge. Marvel at the intricate gingerbread creations that capture the spirit of the season.
CELEBRATION OF THE YULE LOG: Experience the joy of the Yule Log tradition as it is transported from Capitol Circle to Market Square. The log will be added to a festive bonfire, accompanied by holiday music and the lighting of cressets.

CHEEKWOOD’S WHIMSICAL HOLIDAY DELIGHT
BY DOMINIQUE PAUL
Garden gifts of the
for 2024, Cheekwood Estate and Gardens have teamed up with former White House Floral Designer, Laura Dowling, for their annual Christmas installation. With a theme of “Gifts of the Garden,” the entire display is a luscious, French-inspired fever dream that feels magical and transcendent.
Upon entering the grand foyer of the mansion, I was greeted with a colorful Italianate-inspired tree and matching garlands. The gold and plum hues complimented the foyer’s tapestry, giving the whole space a cohesive always-been-there vibe. It was a warm fall day, but I instantly felt as though I’d stepped into another world. I was then introduced to the designer herself who graced my team with a personal tour of the installation she had just moments ago put the finishing touches on.
the dining room is probably my favorite. it’s just very me.
“We’ve been working non-stop for the last two weeks,” Laura tells me, seeming both relieved and inspired all at once. As we ascend the staircase to the second floor, Laura points out a cherub at the top of the tree. “See the gold berries?” she asks, “those are supposed to be bubbles that he’s blowing from his trumpet.” The cherubs serve as a sort of whimsical foretelling, setting the stage for the rest of the house: Prepare to be delighted, they seem to say. As a patron of the arts, it’s the moment you know you are in the good and thoughtful hands of someone who truly loves what they do.
However, Laura Dowling didn’t always lean in to her artistic instincts. Her mother and sister were both artists, but Laura took a more structured path. Originally from Washington, Laura received a Bachelor’s Degree in political science and a Master’s in public administration from University of Washington in Seattle. She was working as a Strategic Communications Manager in Washington, D.C. when a trip to Paris changed her life.
“I was so taken with the French style of floral arrangements. I just remember thinking that’s what I should be doing,” Laura said. But Laura didn’t quit her day job just yet. Over the course of the next decade, she returned to France
several months, including with then First Lady, Michelle Obama. I talked about how we can tell stories through flowers. I think my strategic planning and communications background really helped me in this process.”
In the fall of 2009, Laura found herself among the final three finalists and tasked with creating the floral arrangements and décor for a White House state dinner for India. “We had apple green silk table cloths, fuchsia flowers and orchids with gold accents. It’s still one of my favorite arrangements.” Apparently, the Obamas agreed, and Laura was hired.
From 2009 to 2015, Laura served as Chief Floral Designer at the White House where she managed the floral design for thousands of official events, including state dinners, parties, receptions and large-scale installations, such as the Fourth of July, Halloween and the iconic White House Christmases. Since leaving her post at Pennsylvania Avenue, Laura has authored five books, including the brand-new Designing Christmas, and travels across the world giving lectures, teaching workshops and creating installations such as the one at Cheekwood this Christmas.
“We spent a year planning for this,” said Laura. “I came to Cheekwood last December and just walked the halls. I really drew my inspiration from the colors in the rooms and the wonderful
light that fills the spaces.” Each room in the mansion is decorated with lush and lively holiday trees, boughs and arrangements that truly tickle one’s fancy. The library has a Huntsmen theme of rich burgundies and greens, with trees topped with reindeer heads made from pistachio shells. The loggia feels like a French promenade with its three citrus-themed trees, one made from real ferns and green poinsettias. But, if I had to pick a showstopper, I would say the dining room made me positively swoon.
“The dining room is probably my favorite,” says Laura. “It’s just very me.” The black and white checkered floor and pink walls of the dining room come to life with an exuberant display of pink and blue flowers and ornaments on the trees, boughs and arrangements. The room feels youthful and vibrant. “You can almost imagine Marie Antoinette eating here,” she says, adding that she specially ordered the whimsical butterfly-clad Versace china for the dining table to compliment the holiday décor.
There are several rooms to behold in the mansion, and I don’t want to spoil all of them for you. Suffice to say that touring the “Gifts of the Garden” display this season is on our list of holiday must-do’s. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from December 3rd through January 3rd, you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion followed by a special holiday-inspired afternoon tea service at Café 29. And, during the first week of December, Laura will be on-site giving lectures, workshops, and signing copies of her new book.
When I asked Laura if she had any advice for hopeful creatives, she said, “Find the thing that really speaks to you and do it. You don’t have to upend your life to make it happen. You can build it on the side until you’re ready to jump all the way in.”
Wise words from a woman whose second act has taken her all the way to the White House and beyond.

MISS DAISY’S TRADITIONS WITH THE BIRDSONG FAMILY
BY SHELLY ROBERTSON BIRDSONG
love to cook whenever that is possible, but I hate to follow a recipe. This is particularly irritating to my husband who also loves to cook but follows a recipe to the letter. We are both blessed to carry with us many tried and true recipes and favorite dishes from our mothers and grandmothers. While loving to cook and entertain is definitely our rarely-used passion, it so often turns out that we only get to do it during the holidays. We host Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at our home in Franklin, and I love cooking all day and watching the Macy’s parade or endless Hallmark Christmas movies on television while doing so. I let Johnny tend to his things and I have my favorites, which to be perfectly honest, emanate primarily from my favorite chef and muse, Miss Daisy.
I have loved Daisy and her food since I was a little girl and my mother and I would go to Miss Daisy’s Tearoom for a special lady’s lunch out. Some of the same things I ate when I was a child are the same
things I long for once or twice (or ten times) a year. Thank goodness Daisy has carry-out and keeps many of my favorites stocked all year long at Miss Daisy’s Kitchen. Of course, you can special order your holiday fare–and yes, I have been known to do so in a pinch when getting ready to host twenty people every November and again in December. However, with enough time, I do prefer the fun of doing it myself and so, armed with my copy of the famous Recipes from Miss Daisy’s well known yellow-backed cookbook, I am able to recreate many of my family’s holiday favorites in my own kitchen.
Here are a few of our annual must-have’s–our holiday memories would not be complete without them–and so we say thank you to Miss Daisy for always being part of our holiday meals. I hope you will give these a try yourself or you can order a multitude of dishes and desserts from her at missdaisyking.com.

Miss Daisy’s TURNS 50
This year, Tennessee’s “First Lady of Southern Cooking,” Daisy King, celebrates fifty years in business. Daisy was the founder and chef of the renowned Miss Daisy’s Tearoom and is now the proprietor and executive chef of Miss Daisy’s Kitchen in Franklin.
Where it All Began
Daisy has been a cook since the age of six, when she “baked a Five Flavor Pound Cake from my grandmother Linnie Angleine Fraser Deaton’s recipe” and still serves that cake today at Miss Daisy’s Kitchen. From pound cake, Daisy progressed to learning the cooking skills that can only come from growing up on a farm. “My grandmother taught me how to dry fruit from our orchard, can and pickle vegetables from the garden, roll out biscuits by hand, and fry chicken. I even learned how to churn butter.” A move into the city pushed cooking into the background until college at Belmont University, where she earned a degree in home economics and journalism.
Luncheon at the Tearoom
The story of Daisy King’s career in the restaurant business is as interesting as the food she serves. In the mid-1970’s when Carter’s Court in downtown Franklin was still on the drawing board, the developers recognized the need for a place where ladies could lunch. After a turn of the century house was moved back from Columbia Avenue to its present location, upon seeing it people

Introducing Onward Real Estate
exclaimed: “That’s it! That’s got to be a tearoom.” Thus, the old house was given a new lease on life and with much work and ingenuity, became Miss Daisy’s Tearoom.
First Lady of Southern Cooking
Once the quality of her food and the gracious and sublimely southern hospitality found in both the restaurants and in Miss Daisy herself, became known–Miss Daisy soon became the “First Lady of Southern Cooking.” The author of fourteen cookbooks, including the million selling Recipes from Miss Daisy’s, she has appeared on the “Today Show,” “CBS This Morning,” QVC, NPT’s “Word on Words” and for thirty years, as the perennial guest chef on Nashville’s WTVF-TV’s “Talk of the Town.”
A Legacy of Food & Hospitality
After the closure of the tearoom in 1991, where she opened first in Franklin and then in Nashville, Daisy went on to serve a consultant to major grocery store chains and gourmet markets, and as a media spokesperson for Pillsbury, Swift’s Sausage and Bisquick.
Long one of America’s most celebrated regional cooks, she’s prepared her unique brand of “Southern cooking from the heart” for country music legends, television stars, U.S. Senators and most importantly, for friends and family.

5 EASY ROOM UPDATES FOR A WHOLE NEW LOOK WITHOUT A FULL REMODEL
The Inspo
BY AMY RIVERA & SONYA ROBERTS OF CLICK + DESIGN
Is your home feeling a little “same old, same old”? Sometimes, it takes just a few thoughtful updates to breathe new life into a room, giving it a fresh look and feel without committing to a major overhaul. Let’s explore five creative ways to transform your space that are quick, impactful, and even budget-friendly. And if you want expert advice without the hassle of in-person meetings, e-design might be just the solution to make these ideas come to life in your home!
1. RE-IMAGINE YOUR ROOM LAYOUT
A simple rearrangement can completely transform the energy of a room. By rethinking your layout, you’re able to emphasize different focal points, increase flow, and even add purpose to neglected corners. Imagine your living room with a cozy reading nook or shifting your bed to face a window view you hadn’t fully appreciated.
DESIGNER TIP: Try orienting furniture around a new focal point—like a fireplace, a statement art piece, or a beautiful window. Symmetry also brings harmony, so consider pairing items or balancing seating arrangements for a feeling of cohesion.
2. COLOR STORIES THAT SET THE MOOD
E-DESIGN CONNECTION: An e-design package offers a custom layout tailored specifically to your room’s dimensions, flow, and functionality. Get a new perspective from the comfort of your couch and feel empowered to refresh your space with professional recommendations.
Color is one of the quickest ways to update a space, and changing just one or two tones in your color palette can make a big difference. Whether through a bold accent wall or a few coordinating accessories, adding a new color can give a fresh, modern feel to any room.
DESIGNER TIP: Earthy neutrals, soft blues, and calming greens are trending as go-to shades that add warmth and tranquility. If you’re craving a bold pop, consider hues like emerald or terra-cotta for smaller accents.
E-DESIGN CONNECTION: With e-design services, you can receive personalized mood boards and color palettes tailored to your space’s natural lighting and your unique style. You’ll have the confidence to play with color without over committing, seeing swatches and inspiration images that tie your look together seamlessly.
3. TEXTURE: THE UNSUNG HERO OF COMFORT AND STYLE
Layering textures can bring comfort, warmth, and depth to a room. From plush throws and pillows to woven baskets and rugs, mixing a variety of textures creates a welcoming, curated look that feels complete. Textures help balance hard surfaces like wood or metal with soft, cozy touches that make a space feel lived-in and loved.
DESIGNER TIP: Play with materials like boucle, velvet, or linen, and introduce woven accents for a tactile appeal. You can even mix up textures in a monochromatic color scheme for added sophistication.
E-DESIGN CONNECTION: E-design services help you build a texture palette that suits both your style and lifestyle, especially if you’re unsure about mixing and matching. Get personalized recommendations for fabrics, materials, and textiles that look and feel just right in your space.
4. LIGHT UP THE SPACE WITH LAYERED LIGHTING
Lighting is a game-changer when it comes to setting the mood and defining functionality. A well-lit room incorporates a mix of ambient (general), task, and accent lighting, creating both brightness and warmth while also highlighting key areas. Think about layering different types of lighting fixtures for a balanced effect.
DESIGNER TIP: Consider statement pendants, stylish floor lamps, or sconces to bring a dynamic edge to your lighting scheme. LED light strips behind furniture or under shelves can also add subtle, modern touches.
The Outcome
E-DESIGN CONNECTION: With an e-design package, you’ll get lighting suggestions that fit seamlessly into your layout and match the mood you’re trying to achieve, whether cozy, bright, or somewhere in between.
5. PERSONALIZED DÉCOR TOUCHES FOR AN INSTANT REFRESH
A few carefully chosen décor pieces can anchor a room, giving it a polished and intentional feel. Whether it’s a large mirror, a beautiful area rug, or a new piece of artwork, selecting key accents makes a world of difference. Even a mix of modern and vintage pieces can add charm and tell a story.
DESIGNER TIP: Try adding a few statement pieces that reflect your personality, like an heirloom vase, a vintage clock, or travel souvenirs that bring character. And don’t be afraid to let your art collection evolve over time, layering in new finds as you go.
E-DESIGN CONNECTION: Through e-design, you can work with a designer to incorporate what you already own, as well as select a few key additions to elevate the look of your room. They’ll help balance and arrange pieces for that “collected” look, making your space feel truly yours.
Your Fresh Start Awaits! Refreshing your space is more than just about aesthetics—it’s about making a room that reflects your personality, fits your lifestyle, and brings you joy. Sometimes, all you need are a few simple updates to get started. And with the help of an e-design package, you can gain professional insights tailored to your space, all from the comfort of home. So, why wait? Re-imagine, revitalize, and reclaim your space—one thoughtful update at a time. Your dream room is only a few clicks away! Visit clickthisdesign.com to get started.

MAKING LIFE EASIER DURING THE HOLIDAYS
BY SHELLY ROBERTSON BIRDSONG
ou know that exhausting moment on December 19th when you crawl in from work after sitting in Christmas shopping mall traffic? And what to your wondering eyes should appear, but your neighbors, your husband’s golf buddy and your cousin Suzy–with six kids in tow! It’s the holidays–so spread some instant cheer with these tips to keep your home and kitchen holiday guest-ready at a moment’s notice.
In order to make it through the holidays without spending every day planning and preparing for guests, do these few things starting December 1st. Yes, a little forethought and pre-planning will make the next 31 days much easier, I promise:
1. Tidy Up in a Snap
Keep the house clear of those pesky tree needles and stray mistletoe balls and invest in a CORDLESS VACUUM that you can keep charged and ready to pick up minor messes at a moment’s notice. Even the kids can manage it and help!
2. Instant Ambiance with Holiday Scents
Buy five CANDLES IN VARYING HOLIDAY SCENTS at the start of the season; Something Fir Tree, something Winter Snow, something Cranberry, and scatter them in your common area rooms. Keep lighters close by and accessible so as soon as the doorbell rings unexpectedly, you can light and create a festive and non-smelly atmosphere right away!
3. Cookies on Demand
If you are really ahead of the game: MAKE COOKIES AND FREEZE THE DOUGH IN READY-MADE BALLS to quickly pop in the oven. Or, make sure you buy three or four rolls of pre-made dough in your favorite holiday flavor–peanut butter, sugar or gingerbread–to slice and bake with no muss or fuss!
4. Punch Up Your Drink Game
Speaking of pre-planning: Keep on hand cans of FROZEN ORANGE AND LEMON CONCENTRATE AND BREW UP SOME TEA by the gallon. This, too, can be kept frozen. Guests coming? Mix all that and add some fresh cranberries or sprigs of basil for color to make a fabulous Tea Punch! This is also a great mixer for champagne or vodka if you need to pligh your guests with holiday “spirits.” It’s also a good idea, especially if you know you will entertain throughout the holidays or will have a party or two to attend yourself, to just go ahead and buy a case of wine. Mix red, white and champagne and you are ready to serve or take a bottle as a hostess gift at any moment!
5. Gifts on the Fly
Speaking of HOSTESS GIFTS: Buy five to ten unique ornaments and get small gift bags, tissue paper and cards. Wrap them in advance and have them ready in the closet. Co-worker got you something, and you never even considered getting her a gift? Voila–there you go!
6. Partyware at the Ready
Buy holiday or festive COCKTAIL NAPKINS, PLATES AND CUPS and keep them tucked away for that moment when you haven’t run the dishwasher in over a week. If you are lucky enough to have crystal or glass wine glasses, go ahead and pull that stuff out! And maybe think about polishing the silver at the beginning of November. Those trays and serving pieces can come in handy –and make you uber Martha Stewart looking– for at least four months before they need to be polished again!
7. The Ultimate Cheese Tray Hack
And lastly, and really a year-round trick of the trade of hostessing: Buy MIXED NUTS, MULTI-PACKS OF CRACKERS AND KEEP HARD CHEESES AND/OR BRIE or specialty cheese on hand at all times. Add some olives, grapes, jam or other favorite crudité and presto! You’ll have a ready-made and seemingly fancy and well-thought-out party tray. Especially if you serve it on a silver platter!
So, as the holiday whirlwind sweeps through your home, remember that a little preparation goes a long way in keeping the chaos merry and bright. With these quick tricks and thoughtful touches, you’ll not only survive the season but dazzle your guests with ease. When the doorbell rings and unexpected visitors step inside, you’ll be ready—with cookies in the oven, a drink in their hand, and a festive glow all around. Cheers to making holiday magic happen with less stress and more joy!

A VERY MERRY AND GRAND CHRISTMAS TABLESCAPE
BY BROOKE WEBB OF KBSTYLED PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARRIE LAIDLER OF SWAK PHOTOGRAPHY
This year’s Christmas tablescape was inspired by the beautiful holiday tabletop and decor collection that Mary Hollis Huddleston of Mrs. Southern Social created in collaboration with Southern Living and Dillard’s. From classic greens and reds to beautiful, whimsical little red birds… Mary’s collection offers pieces that will bring lots of holiday cheer to your home this season.
I created our Christmas table around these tree accent plates, the stunning holiday block green napkins and green studded high ball glasses. These pieces, including the reversible holiday table runner, are from Mary’s Merry and Grand collection at Dillard’s.
I’ve always heard that red birds symbolize love and good luck, and the saying “when a red bird appears, an angel is near,” has always stuck with me. This collection features little red birds, and I wanted to create a table that focused more on the red bird and its meaning. I incorporated red birds into my floral centerpiece and love how it turned it.
Creating our Christmas table always brings me so much joy, and this year’s table turned out just as I hoped it would! Check out Mary’s Merry and Grand collection online or in your local Dillard’s store. There is still plenty of time for you to pick up some pieces from this beautiful collection to create your own Christmas tablescape or even to gift to a loved one or friend. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

Eventually, as things go, wassail referred less often to the greeting and more often to the drink. Similarly, the toast that was traditionally floated atop the wassail eventually became our toast; that is, when you hold up your glass and announce, “Let’s have a toast,” or “I’ll toast to that,” you’re paying homage to this very old ritual of floating a bit of toast in a spiced ale, a mulled wine or a traditional wassail as an honor or in celebration. In another wassail tradition, the spiced cider was offered as an ancient honor to the trees. In wintertime, wassailers would prepare the traditional wassail–soaking pieces of bread, cake or toast in it–and travel from apple orchard to apple orchard in effort to ensure
INGREDIENTS
4 small apples
¼ cup unrefined cane sugar
1 medium orange
13 whole cloves
2 quarts hard apple cider
½ cup brandy
1 Tbsp powdered ginger
1 tsp. grated nutmeg
6 allspice berries
2 cinnamon sticks

The holidays are full of tasty treats, gourmet meals and yes, the perfect cocktail or complimentary beverage for your holiday table or party. There are some, like Egg Nog or Wassail, that are time tested; having been the holiday staple for generations. New-fangled contemporary contributions to the season’s cup of cheer could be a champagne Poinsettia punch, a Candy Cane Martini or a Fireball filled cup of cider.
Here are a few timeless and the modern classics to try at your next gathering. Cheers!
traditional wassail SERVES
10-12
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Scoop out the core of the apples without fully penetrating the apple–a melon baller works well. Fill each apple with about a tablespoon of unrefined cane sugar. Place the apples in the baking sheet. Stud an orange with thirteen cloves and place it in the baking sheet. Bake the apples and orange together for forty minutes.
2. While the apples and orange bake, pour apple cider and brandy into a heavy-bottomed stock pot and warm over moderately low heat. Whisk in powdered ginger and grated nutmeg. Do not bring the wassail to a boil.
3. Cut a small square of the butter muslin and place allspice and cinnamon into the square; tie with 100-percent cotton cooking twine and float this sachet of spices in the wassail as it warms.
4. Beat egg yolks until light in color and set aside. In a separate bowl, whip egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold egg yolks into whites, then temper the eggs by slowly pouring one-half cup wassail into the eggs. Remove the spice sachet from the wassail and pour in the tempered eggs. Transfer to a punch bowl. Float baked apples and orange in the wassail and serve by the mug, topping each much with a small slice of toast if desired.
Eggnog, historically also known as milk punch or egg milk punch, is a rich, chilled, sweetened, creamy dairybased beverage traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, whipped egg whites and egg yolks and, in some contexts, distilled spirits such as brandy, rum or bourbon.
INGREDIENTS
1 liter Maker's Mark® Bourbon
1-quart milk
1-quart heavy cream
2 dozen eggs
11⁄2 cups sugar
Nutmeg (for garnish)
METHOD
Separate eggs and beat yolks until creamy. Whip sugar into yolks. Beat whites until they stand in peaks, adding 1/2 cup additional sugar, if desired. Beat yolks and Makers Mark® Bourbon together. Add whites. Beat cream. Add cream and milk to mixture. Add nutmeg to taste, and garnish each cup with nutmeg.

mulled cider SERVES 10-12
INGREDIENTS
2 quarts apple cider
½ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon whole cloves
1 teaspoon whole allspice
2 cinnamon sticks
¼ teaspoon salt
1 dash ground nutmeg
1½ ounces rum (per mug if desired)
METHOD
With cloves and allspice in a tea ball, cook all ingredients in a Crockpot on low 2-8 hours. Stir occasionally/rarely to dissolve sugar. Or cook in a pan on the stovetop on low heat 20-30 minute until it simmers. *Add 11/2 ounces Bacardi Gold Rum per mugful when poured, if desired. Don't cook it with the Rum.

GREER’S COUNTRY GOODNESS
BY DOMINIQUE PAUL
It began innocently enough back in 1994. Rodeo Cowboy Ernie Greer, then in his mid-thirties, was looking to buy a stainless steel table so he could cure hams during his off-season. As a kid in rural Paris, Tennessee, Ernie’s father and grandfather both cured hams while young Ernie helped. But when Ernie arrived to the home of Mr. Reynolds to buy the table, Reynolds asked Ernie if he wanted to buy his whole operation instead. The small smoke house facility on Southall Road was already USDA approved, and Greer saw an opportunity. “I traded my rodeo horses for hams,” says Ernie. Thirty years later, Greer’s Tennessee Country Hams is a hub of Williamson County culture and an important part of holiday celebrations throughout the community–and nationwide.
Each January, two thousand pounds of hams arrive at Greer’s, where they are hand-processed and cured by Mr. Greer himself for several months. “We don’t cut corners. We only use salt to cure our hams. No preservatives or nitrates–ever,” says Ernie’s wife of forty years, Pam Greer. “It takes a man to run a business like this," she says of the back-breaking work that goes into producing their quality hams. Ernie tells me he knows it’s time
to smoke the hams when the peaches come in bloom. By August, the hams are ready for sale and each year this small family operation sells over one thousand hams locally and via shipping. “We’ve been doing this so long, we have customers who we knew their Daddy and their Grandaddy. It gets real personal,” says Ernie. Both Pam and Ernie tell me that it’s an honor to be a part of their customers’ family holiday traditions.
In addition to their famous hams, during the holiday season Greer’s offers large trays of sides including stuffing using Pam’s mother’s recipe, macaroni and cheese, turnip greens, creamed corn and nine different kinds of pies. The day I was there, Pam and Ernie’s daughter and granddaughter were pitching in to help. “Our granddaughter will call and ask if she can bring a friend over to help make pies. They have fun back there!” Pam tells me. During our conversation, Ernie opened up the secret back door and revealed the turkey frying room where they’ll be preparing over one hundred turkeys for Thanksgiving this year. “We’ll be up at 1am getting everything ready,” he tells me. “Then we close at noon. We need to have our Thanksgiving too.”
Making food and memories for our community is clearly a labor of love for the Greers. They don’t have a website, don’t take credit cards and don’t advertise. Frankly, they don’t need to. They tell me they are a small, family-run operation and intend to keep it that way. However, some growth was inevitable.
Over the years, Pam and Ernie kept getting requests from customers who didn’t want to just pick up their order and leave. So, a few years ago, Ernie constructed a covered porch on the front of the smokehouse. Now known affectionately as “The Porch,” Pam and Ernie operate a down home southern soul food speakeasy for those in the know.
Open for “meat and three” dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and serving breakfast on Sunday, The Porch is the place to go for delicious homemade, real-deal southern fare. With only thirty-six seats available, The Porch is reservations only and BYOB. “We made this for our friends and family and it’s really grown by word of mouth,” says Pam, who creates special off-menu items on Thursday nights only. With dishes like hot chicken and ribeye steaks, Pam says The Porch is almost always full for reservations a week in advance. “We just love cooking for our people,” she tells me. Greer’s also offers gift baskets for sale complete with ham, bacon, local honey, pancake and biscuit mixes, jellies and other items. These can be picked up on site or shipped.
Halfway through my conversation with Pam and Ernie, I realized I hadn’t tasted any of their food yet, but I knew I would be returning to Greer’s again and again. Although I’d only known them roughly thirty minutes, they felt like old friends who you hope to be lucky enough to find in life: warm-hearted, hardworking, and exactly who they seem to be. The word that comes to mind is authentic–a rarity in today’s world. “You can’t bottle this,” I tell them. And I’m not just talking about the food.
I ask Pam and Ernie if they ever think about retiring. Ernie says, “I think about it, but then what would I do? You can only go fishing for so long.” I admit I was relieved to hear it. I’ve only just found them and am not ready to imagine Southall Road without them.
As our conversation comes to a close, I look around at the empty seats on the porch and imagine them filling up later that night with customers and laughter. I can almost feel the love in a physical way–and Pam and Ernie’s outstretched arms welcoming everyone in.
Order your holiday gift baskets by calling 615.791.1710 or visit Greer’s at 3128 Southall Road.

The Art of Display
The holiday season is the perfect time to give gifts that blend beauty with purpose, and few presents do this better than a coffee table book. WHIMSY & WONDER
BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM
Just a short drive from Williamson County lies a whimsical and enchanting retreat like no other: Ancient Lore Village. Located in Knoxville, this fantasy-themed boutique resort transports guests to a world where myth and legend come alive—making it the perfect getaway for anyone looking to experience a place where magic, adventure and tranquility coexist. The story of Ancient Lore Village began with a vision from founder Tom Boyd: to create a place where characters from different worlds could live in harmony and where goodness reigns supreme. This vision was depicted in his book Bokee’s Trek: Outcasts To Inner Earth, which was the inspiration of Anicent Lore Village. That dream has now become a reality, and Ancient Lore Village is more than just a destination—it’s a living, breathing world of storytelling, community and unforgettable experiences.
Along with the village in Bokee’s Trek: Outcasts To Inner Earth, for the lovers of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Ancient Lore Village also brings to life a similar vision of the Shire—Middle Earth’s home for the Hobbits as depicted in the novel. With stone paths, rounded doorways and landscaping that envelops the structures, the village looks like a movie set. But it is truly real and not only the architecture but the people and activities are what bring it all to life. My husband, daughter and I experienced the enchantment firsthand during our recent visit to the village.
When we arrived, we were greeted with a tour by the local fairy, Helea. Her commitment to remaining in character around our daughter was endearing, making the magic set in from the very start. She showed us the dwellings for both Village Gardens and Elven Grove. The Village Gardens consists of seven charming cottages and serves as the heart of the village, where fireside gatherings take place, special celebrations and where guests can enjoy activities like axe throwing, archery, the Gremlin’s Gameyard and hiking. Elven Grove is the newest addition, with five treehouses and two family houses. All the dwellings are rounded, encouraging people to come together in a circle and talk. The design elements are thoughtfully curated with a mindset of togetherness, natural beauty and little surprises—like
hidden fairy doors and gnomes in hideaway cabinets. All accommodations are also package-based, allowing guests to enhance their stay with options like guided tours, immersive activities and delicious meals.
Speaking of delicious meals—we did not go hungry. Our dining took place at Willow’s Landing, which is situated at the top of the waterfall near the entrance to the resort and overlooks the Smoky Mountains. All meals are made from locally sourced ingredients and prepared in a family-style buffet for the earlier meals and our dinner being plated. We enjoyed breakfast, brunch and dinner there; every bite was fantastic. There is also a cash bar and gift shop connected to the Gathering Hall for guests to purchase snacks and mementos.
The staff at Ancient Lore Village were some of the friendliest we have encountered while traveling. Their hospitality and willingness to go out of their way was unmatched—like when a full plate of food suddenly appeared for our “hangry” daughter who was unwilling to eat her starter salad. Acts of attention and kindness like this were not lost for the duration of the stay. Everyone there wants you to embrace the overall goal of bringing people together in peace and harmony in
their inner whimsy and be welcomed. Whether you are there for a quick retreat, a special celebration or a fairytale wedding, Ancient Lore Village promises to deliver an experience unlike any other. So, reserve your stay… Magic and adventure await you.
Prepare to be enchanted at Ancient Lore Village. Visit ancientlorevillage.com or call 865.200.2434 to plan your trip.

AN INTERVIEW WITH SCROOGE WITH YOUR SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN, JOHNNY BIRDSONG
Happy Holidays everyone. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Right? I know we all stay busy, have THINGS going on and sometimes it seems hard to find that Christmas spirit.
I had the opportunity to interview another gentleman recently who has been known for having those same feelings. Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge shared some of his time with me during this hectic holiday. After speaking with him, I feel certain, if Scrooge can find the Christmas spirit, then we can all find a way to do so and to be better, learning from his storied experience.
Mr. Scrooge, thank you for agreeing to sit down with us today. You’ve certainly had quite a reputation in London. Let’s start with this:
How would you describe your attitude toward Christmas before your transformation?
Bah! Christmas was just a waste of time. A day for idle people to take off work and squander their money. If they want to be merry, they can find their own way to do it. I found it a nuisance, a distraction from the real business of life—making money and surviving. If people can't make it on their own, that's their problem. I had no sympathy for such things.
But, of course, you had a change of heart after your visitation from the ghosts. What was your initial reaction to the events that night?
At first, I thought I was losing my mind! Ghosts, chains, and visions of my past—it was madness. I didn’t believe in such things. But the more I saw, the more it became clear that I had been blind to the suffering and the needs of others. It was as if someone was trying to force open my heart, and I didn’t know how to resist it.
What is the most important thing you've learned from your visit with the Ghost of Christmas Present?
The most important lesson is that the present moment is all we truly have. I spent so much time dwelling on the past or obsessing over what the future might bring, I neglected the present—neglected the people who were right in front of me, including my family. The present moment
is where we can make the most difference, and I intend to live in it fully, appreciating every minute I have.
What do you now understand about the importance of love, kindness, and community?
I now see that love and kindness are what make life truly rich. Money can buy comfort, but it cannot buy happiness or fulfillment. It’s the people we care for and who care for us that truly make life worth living. I’ve learned that community and connection are far more valuable than hoarding wealth.
How do you intend to spend the rest of your life now that you’ve learned the true meaning of Christmas?
I will spend the rest of my life making up for the mistakes I made. I will live with generosity in my heart, making sure that my actions reflect the compassion I’ve learned. I’ll spend my days building relationships, spreading kindness, and living with purpose.
How has your view on wealth changed? Do you believe that money is less important than human connection now?
I’ve come to understand that wealth is only valuable when it is used to help others. Money itself is nothing—it’s just paper and metal. The real wealth is in the people we love, the bonds we create, and the good we do in the world. That’s what I value now.
Thank you, Ebenezer. I think there is a lot we gentlemen can learn from you and live by your famous words,"I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the past, the present, and the future. The Spirits of all three shall strive within me."
As for me I have seen and dealt with the “ghosts” of my past and have learned that life is precious. Hug your wife, tell your kids you love them, send a message to somebody you haven’t talked to in awhile and tell them you are thinking of them. Help a stranger. Give to a cause. Celebrate! Believe! And have yourself a Merry little Christmas.
Little Women’s A Christmas
THE HEARTWARMING HOLIDAY MOVIE FILMED IN FRANKLIN
BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID MICHAEL PHOTO
he beauty and charm of Franklin has always provided the perfect backdrop for filming a Christmas movie–and that is exactly what took place this past summer. Great American Family network will air A Little Women’s Christmas this holiday season, beginning on November 23rd. Filmed in Franklin, it is described as a contemporary retelling of the classic novel, Little Women. This adaptation follows the lives of the March sisters in a small town at Christmas, brought to life by an incredible cast of talented people. The iconic Gladys Knight also makes an appearance during the movie and performs “Joy” as part of the Christmas Eve church services.
Third Coast Film’s Brian Williams was thrilled to be a part of the project. Local to our area, Brian is familiar with Franklin and provided the foresight needed to create the perfect set locations. His company, Third Coast Film, was created in response to the needs of our community. “There are fantastic production companies in town but a lot of what is missing are the other ingredients that surround film-making, such as packaging, development, financing and distribution,” he explains. “There are such amazing creatives in this community and incredible stories and storytellers. What’s been lacking are distribution pipelines and ways to get those stories into the broader marketplace. That is the main focus of Third Coast Film.”
Brian says the film was several years in the making, starting with a young female writer who was inspired by the Little Women story and wrote the first draft of her script for a screenwriting class assignment. After several drafts of the script with True Brand Entertainment, Brian says they got their hands on it last December and, along with local producer Rodney Eldridge, were able to make what they believe is a truly special movie.
“We had been given the script by our director, Brandon Clark, and loved the modern telling of the original story told around Christmas,” Brian says. “The network we pitched it to, Great American Family, had chosen the original Little Women novel for their book club that month… It was a well-timed pitch! We also loved that it required an ensemble cast and that our partners, True Brand Entertainment, wanted to shoot it in Franklin.”
The team felt that Franklin, shown as Alcott Grove in the film, feels like the picture-perfect town especially during the holidays. “We were excited to use these iconic buildings and businesses to supply the perfect backdrop for our film–including The Franklin Theater, Shuff's Music, Stable Reserve, Onyx and Alabaster and Philanthropy. The historical elements of Franklin helped to make the modern-day adaptation of this story feel more grounded and authentic to the original story,” explains Brian.
“This is a film that highlights the importance of family, traditions, community and love. Those are things Franklin represents on its own every day. We are excited to show the rest of the world how Franklin does Christmas.”
-LAURA OSNES
Brian says the most rewarding thing about doing this project was that it truly felt like a family affair. “So many of our friends and families were able to participate and see it brought to life in our own backyard. Not to mention several familial connections behind the camera. To name a few: Brian Bird, one of our producers got to work with his son who was a writer on the project. Our director, Brandon Clark and his father our Director of Photography, Jeff Clark, and actor Jesse Hutch and his daughter, Charlize, both had roles in the film.”
Jesse Hutch, who plays the role of John in the film, enjoyed filming with his daughter in his local town. “The opportunity to act on screen with my daughter Charlize was truly a heartfelt moment for me. This is her acting debut, and I couldn’t be more proud of her,” Jesse says. Charlize, who plays the role of Daisy in the movie, says she was happy to do the film because she loves Christmas and enjoyed being in a movie with her dad.
Jesse says this is the first ensemble cast film for Great American Family, and he believes it will be extremely special for the viewers and fans and the film will inspire a message of hope. “No matter what you’re going through. There’s always a faith aspect and a mindset of joy to be pursued,” he says. “I believe everyone has their own ideas of what the spirit of Christmas is. However, I believe that this film will bring to light faith, hope, family and the spirit of overcoming challenges and difficulties. I think we also touch on the theme of new dreams and new love.”
Actress Laura Osnes, who portrays Beth March in the movie, is also a Franklin local and loved filming so close to home. She says that family and faith are at the forefront of this movie. “The sisters share such a special bond (which was the same off-screen!), and each of their unique
journeys demonstrate values of patience, discernment, togetherness, service, generosity, hope and joy,” Laura says. “Holiday movies should be more than just the lights, the fake snow, the decorations, or even the romance. This is a film that highlights the importance of family, traditions, community and love. Those are things Franklin represents on its own every day. We are excited to show the rest of the world how Franklin does Christmas.”
Actor Kyle Kupecky portrays Laurie in the movie and is also local to the area. “It was a dream to film in Franklin,” Kyle says. “The whole town already looks like a movie set. And the fact that I get to actually live here is just a blessing I'm constantly thanking the Lord for!” He says you can't help but fall in love with the family in this film and that you fall in love with their faith in each other and how they rally around one another. “Their faith in Jesus carries them through every circumstance and this Christmas movie makes you believe again. It makes you believe in yourself, in the kindness of others around you, and ultimately in the presence of God in your life. A Little Women's Christmas does all those things in a beautiful way.”
This film truly embraces the reason for the season, while also putting our beloved Franklin in the forefront of the story. It brought many people together to inspire others through a beloved story. Brian says they hired over a 100 cast and crew from the local area–which included my sister and niece, Shelly and Keeling Birdsong, who had the opportunity to be extras during the filming. They both said their experience on set was like no other. From what I have heard, this film was a well-loved adventure for all involved and will bring heartfelt happiness to the viewers.
