What the World Needs Now - is Love
Dear Readers,
Welcome to 2025 friends! And, WOW, what a welcome we have had! Snow kicked things off and now exceedingly cold weather! There is a new president, a new puppy... Oh wait-that’s me, not the world! I should say Johnny has a new puppy as it was his Christmas present. However, the Duke of Windsor, has stolen the Birdsong household’s collective hearts and, well, we love him.
Speaking of love, this issue features plenty of wedding love stories and lots of other bridal information for all those Williamson County brides who
got engaged over the holidays. Of course, I am sure Walton’s does not mind at all, if a non-bride wants to come on in and buy the cover worthy ring, we have adorning our Winter issue cover! Who doesn’t love a vintage diamond and sapphire ring!
And the words of the 1 Corinthians 13 about love, surrounds the ring, as a reminder that love is in all of us and all around us, whether at a wedding or Valentines, or with a new puppy.
All of us can be in love or loving at any time really and, for any manner of reasons and for any number of things, people and pets. I love this issue every year because we try to curate a magazine full of love. I hope you feel the love this cold winter and share that with the world around us. There sometimes feels like there isn’t enough and what the world needs now more than anything else-is love.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.

EXCEPTIONAL CARDIAC CARE IS HELPING SAVE LIVES WITH WILLIAMSON HEALTH
yearly heart health screening promotion is saving lives in Williamson County— Williamson Health is once again offering its fifty-dollar cardiac calcium score screening this February during American Heart Month.
The coronary calcium score screening is a quick, painless scan for asymptomatic individuals ages forty to seventy-five, designed to detect heart disease risks before symptoms emerge.
Last year, Mike Schatz’s screening revealed a life-threatening condition he didn’t suspect, despite leading a healthy lifestyle. The scan showed potential blockages, prompting Mike to consult Dr. Amit Keswani, a cardiologist with Ascension Saint Thomas Heart Franklin practicing at Williamson Medical Center. Mike underwent a heart catheterization procedure in Williamson Medical Center’s Cardiac Center, confirming a ninety-five percent blockage in his “widowmaker” artery, the heart’s primary blood supply. A heart attack likely would have proved fatal.
“He told me my score was high,” Mike recalls. “In fact, I was in the top one percent for my age. I actually like being in the top percentile for most things—but this wasn’t one of them.”
Mike underwent bypass surgery at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, followed by participation in Williamson Health’s cardiac rehabilitation program. Now, he’s back to living an active life.
Mike, Chief Development Officer and partner at Brentwood-based marketing
agency 5by5, only signed up for the screening that potentially saved his life because he learned of it through his company’s work with Williamson Health. And he’s not the only one.
Mark Harless, a teacher at Franklin High School, scheduled his screening at his wife’s insistence. His score was far above the threshold, indicating significant risk.
Mark, who had no prior symptoms of heart trouble, underwent further testing, including heart catheterization at Williamson Medical Center performed by Dr. Keswani. The procedure revealed significant blockages, leading to open heart surgery at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital. After surgery, Harless participated in and graduated from Williamson Health’s cardiac rehabilitation program. Today, he is doing well and credits the screening with saving his life.
“Williamson Medical Center is a very special place,” Mark says. “It’s like a family here, and it’s making a difference in this community. This all started with a fiftydollar test, but to me, it was worth a million dollars.”
Williamson Health is offering the fiftydollar coronary calcium score screening promotion throughout the month of February. Interested individuals can schedule an appointment by calling today. Screenings will be conducted on the first floor of the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee at 3000 Edward Curd Lane. Results will be mailed to patients and their primary care physicians. Please call by February 28th to book an appointment.
Cardiac calcium score screenings are one of many ways Williamson Health prioritizes heart health. The newly opened, world-class Cardiac Cardiac Center in the Boyer-Bryan West Tower includes two advanced cardiac catheterization labs, an electrophysiology (EP) lab, and pre- and post-procedure recovery areas. These cutting-edge facilities and technologies enable physicians to perform a full spectrum of diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Take charge of your heart health today. This $50 test could be the most important investment you ever make in your well-being—or even your life. Call 615.435.5361 by February 28th to schedule your coronary calcium score screening, and join Williamson Health in making heart health a priority. Your heart deserves it.

LIVE. LIFE.
LONGER.
D
r. James Lohse and Dr. Jay Cleveland have teamed up to launch Next Level Health, a preventative medicine practice focused on addressing health issues before they arise. Unlike traditional medicine, which treats patients only after a problem has developed, Next Level Health aims to optimize health through proactive and personalized care, with the goal to help you live life longer.
Originally from New York City, James and his family have called Franklin home since 2007. As a lifelong athlete passionate about sports injuries and concussion management, sports medicine was a natural fit for his career. Over time, his practice evolved to focus on proactive care, particularly for high-performing athletes. With over twenty years of experience in family, sports and precision medicine, James now combines his expertise to offer injury care and preventative health solutions for his patients.
Jay’s passion for longevity medicine stems from his personal health journey and two decades of experience in emergency care. Frustrated with the limitations of traditional healthcare, he witnessed countless preventable emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes and late-stage cancer. This experience motivated him to transition from treating sickness to promoting wellness. At Next Level Health, Jay
applies a comprehensive, 360-degree approach to patient care focused on preventing illness before it starts.
“After twenty years in the ER, I grew tired of seeing the same patients with the same preventable conditions repeatedly, knowing that with the right care, many of these outcomes could be avoided, yet no one was taking the time to do it. I turned to James one day and said, ‘It’s time,’” Jay shares.
Together, James and Jay are committed to helping patients not only live life longer but live life well. They incorporate advanced medical technologies, preventative

strategies and personalized support to improve their patients' quality of life. Their holistic approach focuses on treating the whole person rather than addressing symptoms after they appear.
“The goal of this practice is to help you maintain the ability to do the things you love for much longer, rather than simply being alive but unable to fully live,” says James.
Unlike conventional healthcare, which often waits for disease to manifest before taking action, Next Level Health focuses on prevention. The practice emphasizes key pillars of health, including nutrition, sleep, relationships, supplements, mindfulness, recovery and cutting-edge therapies like red light therapy and IV infusions.
“Our goal is simple: when you walk out, you should feel good—confident that we’re fully committed to your care. We’re not just here for a quick fix; we’re in it for the long haul, walking alongside you on your health journey as true advocates,” they explain. This is all part of their philosophy to help patients live life longer with vitality and purpose.
Patients undergo advanced genetic testing and comprehensive bloodwork at the first consultation, analyzing more than sixty-five biomarkers. These biomarkers provide measurable insights into the state of the body. The results are paired with a detailed conversation with James and Jay to review the patient’s history and current health status. About a month later, patients meet again to discuss their personalized health plan, which covers nutrition, exercise, recovery, supplements and more. From that point forward, the doctors serve as advocates and partners throughout the patient’s health journey.
“With our experience in both specialties across middle Tennessee, and being based here in Franklin, the biggest advantage we offer is our connection to top-tier specialists. We’re not starting from scratch. We’ve built relationships over the past twenty years. That means we can call or text and get immediate support, significantly reducing wait times and ensuring patients get accurate diagnoses quickly. Most of the time, it’s about offering reassurance—helping patients know they don’t have something serious like cancer. We handle the whole process to give them peace of mind,” they explain.
The goal of this practice is to help you maintain the ability to do the things you love for much longer, rather than simply being alive but unable to fully live.
- DR. JAMES LOHSE
Next Level Health also integrates advanced cancer screening into its preventative care model. Traditional screenings typically cover only a few types of cancer—cervical, breast, prostate, lung, colorectal and skin. However, with new technology, the practice can now screen for more than fifty-five types of cancer, allowing patients to take control of their health before serious issues arise.
“We strive for early detection, so we can get patients on the right path before it’s too late,” they emphasize. This is just one more way Next Level Health helps you live life longer by prioritizing early intervention and a healthier future.
Ready to prioritize your health and future? Schedule an appointment today to gain valuable insights into your current health profile and genetic trends. Visit nextlevelhealthtn.com and take the first step toward a longer, more vibrant life.
glass skin THE KEYTOGET
BY LAUREN MOORE, RN | GRACE AESTHETICS
as a registered nurse working in the medical aesthetics field, nothing makes me happier than seeing the boost in selfconfidence my clients receive from the services I provide at Grace Aesthetics in Cool Springs. Grace Aesthetics is known for using cutting-edge treatments to deliver natural results, and I am excited to announce our latest innovation: the ZO Glass Skin Facial. It’s the perfect prewedding treatment for flawless skin on your big day or any other special event.
SUOEGROGGN
BUT FIRST, WHAT IS A GLASS SKIN FACIAL?
You may have heard the term, but not all Glass Skin Facials are the same. At Grace Aesthetics, our ZO Glass Skin Facial consists of microneedling the skin with an infusion of chemicals, such as salicylic acid, used to exfoliate the skin, followed by a medical-grade retinoid product. For those not familiar, microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny pulsating needles to create microinjuries to the skin. Microneedling alone is a very effective
treatment that helps improve the look of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone and more. But, when combined with the exfoliating serums and retinoid products, it is even more effective! And the results speak for themselves. Our clients have shown a dramatic improvement in their skin after just one treatment. Their skin is glowing, dewy and plump, with a notable reduction in fine lines and pore size.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
During your treatment, I will first numb your entire face for approximately thirty minutes. Then, I will cleanse your face and use the Skinstylus pen to microneedle your skin with the exfoliating infusions, which will be customized for your unique skin type. I will then administer the ZO Stimulator Peel to your face, followed by ZO’s Radical Night Repair retinoid product. You can expect your face to be red and stinging for up to two hours following the treatment, and your skin will feel warm to the touch for about twenty-four hours. Forty-eight hours after your Glass Skin Facial, you will begin to peel, and peeling can last from five to seven days but is easily covered with makeup. Your skin will just appear dry. Two weeks post-treatment is when your gorgeous, healthy-looking glass skin will emerge. It’s well worth the wait!
For brides-to-be, I recommend coming to see me six to eight months before your wedding
Nearly everyone is a good candidate for the Glass Skin Facial, and there’s very little downtime because the treatment is not too aggressive, but you’re still going to get amazing results! In addition to Glass Skin Facials, I also provide microneedling with PRF, IPL Photofacials, Morpheus8 and Pure Plasma.
day so I can get to know your skin and see how it responds to various treatments. For your introductory treatment, start with something lowrisk, such as a Hydrafacial, followed by a very light chemical peel to see how your skin responds. For best results with the ZO Glass Skin Facial, a series of three, spaced four to six weeks apart is what I recommend. Starting the series four to five months before your wedding day and capping it off with a Hydrafacial ten days pre-wedding will give you the most sumptuous, juicy beautiful skin for your special day and will provide the perfect canvas for your wedding makeup! And the glowing results will last far beyond your wedding day. Anytime you puncture the skin, the skin has to act to repair itself. During that process, the skin builds collagen–and anytime you build collagen, it’s a permanent result. Of course, the skin will continue to age, but this investment in your skin will continue to pay off long after you’ve returned from your honeymoon.
Glow with confidence! The ZO Glass Skin Facial at Grace Aesthetics is perfect for weddings, events, or daily radiance. Call 615.401.9963 or follow @nashskinedit to book now!

ULTIMATE TOOLKIT TO TRANSFORM YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
BY KATIE MURPHY
With over twenty-five years of experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor, C.C. Shaw wrote a guidebook on how to foster mental health in your daily life through her book, Free Counseling. The idea came from an epiphany while in a meeting with a patient. The patient shared that people in their lives often told them to stop worrying so much, but they weren’t sure if that was even possible. As C.C. sat in that session explaining the techniques, she realized the simplicity. That’s when she began her mission: make mental health more accessible.
C.C. wrote the book while simultaneously having a full-time career and taking care of her family. After meeting with patients all day, she would reflect and write about the common mental health challenges that her patients would go through. By outlining the steps to address these struggles and sharing the successful approaches used in her counseling sessions, she shows how practical and insightful decisions can help you regain your footing, no matter the challenges you face.
Free Counseling covers a wide range of topics. Each chapter offers practical insights and strategies to help you work through specific hurdles. Think of this book as the most affordable therapy session you’ll ever have. And the best part? You won’t have to worry about forgetting your therapist’s advice; just grab it off your bookshelf and find the answers whenever you need them! C.C. hopes this book will transform the life of anyone who reads it, but ultimately, it’s up to the reader to take that first step.
Take the first step toward a new chapter in your life, and order the book on amazon.com.

THE RISE OF NON-ALCOHOLIC MOVEMENTS AND ALTERNATIVE DRINKS
In recent years, the non-alcoholic movement has gained significant traction, driven by shifting consumer preferences, health-conscious lifestyles, and a growing desire for inclusivity in social settings. This cultural shift has led to an explosion of innovative alternative drinks and brands that cater to those seeking sophisticated, flavorful beverages without the buzz.
THE MOVEMENT TOWARDS MINDFUL DRINKING
Mindful drinking, a trend characterized by conscious moderation or complete abstinence from alcohol, has become a cornerstone of modern social habits. Health concerns, such as the long-term effects of alcohol consumption and the desire for mental clarity, are motivating factors. Additionally, the rise of the “sober curious” movement has encouraged individuals to explore alcohol-free lifestyles without stigma. Events like Dry January have further normalized abstinence from alcohol, providing a supportive community for participants.
INNOVATIVE NON-ALCOHOLIC ALTERNATIVES
The demand for non-alcoholic options has spurred the creation of beverages that mimic the sophistication and taste of traditional alcoholic drinks. Today, consumers can choose from a variety of alcohol-free beers, wines, and spirits that rival their alcoholic counterparts in taste and presentation.
Non-alcoholic beer brands like Athletic Brewing Co. and Heineken 0.0 have developed products that deliver the same malty and hoppy flavors without the alcohol. In the wine space, brands like Surely and Ariel offer alcohol-free options crafted through de-alcoholization processes that preserve the integrity of the wine's
For those who enjoy cocktails, brands like Seedlip and Ritual Zero Proof provide botanical-based spirits designed to be mixed into alcohol-free concoctions. Meanwhile, ready-to-drink mocktails from companies like Mocktail Club and Lyre’s deliver convenience and sophistication in a can or bottle.
A GROWING INDUSTRY
The non-alcoholic beverage market is booming, with reports predicting significant growth in the coming years. This expansion is reshaping the beverage industry and redefining social norms. Bars and restaurants increasingly incorporate non-alcoholic options into their menus, ensuring everyone can partake in the experience without feeling excluded.
A FUTURE OF INCLUSION AND CHOICE
The rise of non-alcoholic movements and alternative drinks reflects a broader societal shift towards inclusivity and mindful living. Whether for health reasons, personal choice, or curiosity, the non-alcoholic landscape offers an abundance of options for those seeking flavorful, elevated experiences sans alcohol.

ETIQUETTE MISTAKES TO AVOID AT SOUTHERN WEDDINGS
eddings are joyous occasions, often filled with tradition, celebration and a touch of formality. However, they can also be rife with potential etiquette pitfalls. Whether you’re a guest, a member of the bridal party or even the couple tying the knot, there are some common missteps that can detract from the day’s perfection. Let’s explore some of the most frequent etiquette blunders and how to avoid them.
Ignoring RSVP Deadlines
Failing to RSVP on time creates unnecessary stress for the couple and their families. Southern weddings are meticulously planned, often down to the exact number of monogrammed napkins. A late or missing RSVP can throw off seating arrangements and catering counts. Not to mention, it is rude.
Overstepping Boundaries with Plus-Ones
If your invitation doesn’t explicitly say “and guest,” don’t assume you can bring one. Southern weddings often have tight guest lists, and bringing an uninvited plus-one can create logistical headaches.
Mismanaging Kids
While children can add a touch of charm to any wedding, they can also be unpredictable. If your children are invited, make sure they’re well-behaved and supervised. If they’re not, respect the couple’s wishes and arrange for childcare.
Ignoring the Dress Code
In the South, wedding attire is often steeped in tradition. Whether it’s a formal evening affair or a casual garden party, the dress code on the invitation isn’t a suggestion—it’s a requirement. Showing up underdressed or, worse, in white (unless specifically instructed) is a surefire way to draw disapproving glances. When in doubt, err on the side of formality.
Arriving Late
Punctuality isn’t just polite; it’s essential. Weddings often begin with precision, and arriving after the bride’s grand entrance can be seen as disrespectful. Aim to arrive at least fifteen minutes early, and if you’re running behind, wait discreetly until an appropriate pause to enter.
Skipping the Receiving Line
In the South, graciousness is key and skipping the receiving line is seen as a lack of appreciation for the couple’s effort. Take the time to greet, congratulate and thank the couple and their families. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way.
Being a “Social Media Reporter”
While snapping a few photos is often encouraged, live-tweeting or posting unflattering angles of the bride before the official photographer has shared their work is a major no-no. Always check for a social media policy or hashtag before posting.
Overindulging at the Bar
Southern hospitality often means a wellstocked bar, but it’s important to enjoy responsibly. Overindulgence can lead to embarrassing behavior, which not only reflects poorly on you but can also disrupt the event. Remember, this day isn’t about you—it’s about celebrating the couple.
Forgetting to Mingle
Southern weddings are as much about the guests as they are about the couple. Don’t just stick to your table or friend group; take the opportunity to meet new people. A warm and engaging guest is always remembered fondly.
At the heart of Southern weddings is a celebration of love, family and tradition. By keeping these etiquette tips in mind, you can ensure you’re contributing to the joy and not detracting from it. Remember, good manners never go out of style, especially below the Mason-Dixon line.

DATING IN THE
TO SWIPE TO SWIPE
Gone are the days when a boy would show up with flowers at your front door. Now, they send you a rose emoji via direct message. In a society where we can do everything on our smartphones, it’s no wonder that online dating is becoming more popular than in-person meet-cutes. As a twenty-five-year-old, it’s more common to hear that the newest couple met via the latest dating app rather than in person. So, follow me, and let’s lean into dating in the digital age.
TINDER, BUMBLE & HINGE, OH MY!
Not only do you have to find your one true love online, but now you have to figure out what app they’re on! But luckily for you, they’re probably on all of them. According to an unofficial poll, I asked my friends to participate in, the three most popular dating apps are Tinder, Hinge and Bumble. But, as of late, Tinder seems to be on the outs. It’s conventionally known for its casual nature and not for real connections. On the other hand, Hinge is known for being less surface level. I mean…their slogan is literally “Designed to be Deleted.” The app requires its users to be more engaged by using prompts to encourage a deeper conversation. Bumble is known for letting women make the first move. Which, in theory, is very cool and aspirational. But, if you’re anything like me, that sounds more like a nightmare. Nonetheless, Bumble also has prompts in the app and offers “Bumble BFF” for friends and “Bumble Bizz” for networking. My advice? Join them all. What’s the worst that could happen?
OR NOT
BY KATIE MURPHY
DIGITAL AGE
PLEASE DON’T BE A SERIAL KILLER
*Cough Cough* Well, anyway... With the explosion of dating apps, the consumption of true content has also exploded. It’s hard not to scroll through any streaming service and not see shows like Deadly Dates, My Online Nightmare, The Tinder Swindler, Swiped to Death, etc. You get the point. Safety in the dating world is a huge concern. But there are ways to mitigate the risks. For example, tell your friends the plans and share your location. If you have a friend with FBI-level detective skills, let them uncover any potential red flags without making you feel like you already know everything about the guy! Most importantly, trust your gut. It’s telling you something for a reason.
NOT AS ADVERTISED
There's nothing worse than waiting for a date only to have someone show up who looks nothing like their profile picture. When looking at someone’s profile, use context clues! For example, if your date is wearing their fraternity’s letters in their profile, you will probably have a hard time recognizing them at that dimly lit bar where you decided to meet for your first date. Now, this point goes both ways. Sure, I look really cute in that photo from my senior year of college. But is it an accurate portrayal of how I look now? Nope. Have those around you take inventory of the pictures you include in your profile; that way, you can avoid an awkward conversation or unnecessary ghosting.
BOOO!
Sorry, did I scare you? Ghosting is a pandemic in our society (too soon?). Everyone these days has gotten way too comfortable disappearing without a trace. But here's the spooky truth: communication is key! Let's all make a pact to be a little braver in our interactions, a little more honest in our responses, and a lot less ghost-like. And by “we,” I’m obviously not counting me.
I’m no dating expert, but sometimes it’s refreshing to hear from someone who doesn’t have it all figured out. Taking that leap of faith, whether it’s your first time or your fifth, is both scary and awkward. But it’s also exciting. No matter where you are in life, there’s no better time than now, especially with a new year ahead, to push past your comfort zone. Go for it! I’m cheering you on!

How Hugh Sees It
SOUTHERN ETIQUETTE IN
ACTION
BY JOHNNY BIRDSONG | YOUR SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN
appy New Year! I am so excited about 2025 and all it has to offer. Each year, we ring in the New Year along with our annual Winter issue, which includes a very special wedding section.
In this issue, I am excited and proud to have my friend Hugh Howser be with us as our SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN. He brightens the room when he walks in with his brilliant smile and magnetic personality. As the co-owner of H Three Events, he has earned his reputation as one of Nashville’s premier event and wedding planners. He knows a thing or two about weddings and etiquette. He always draws a crowd wherever he goes, making others smile.
Yes, a true Southern Gentleman. As we prepared our annual issue full of all things bridal, we had the chance to ask Hugh a few questions about how important it is to remain a southern gentleman even during the stressful times of planning and executing a wedding - or in just his everyday normal life!
What does being a Southern Gentleman mean to you, both personally and professionally?
A Southern Gentleman…he has humor, style and a knack for tackling any project except Christmas lights.
How do you incorporate the qualities of a Southern Gentleman in your everyday life?
I entertain regularly, so every aspect of my events involves Southern hospitality and comfort for my guests. I make sure everyone is well fed, with plenty of drink options. I also loathe "small-talk," so when curating my guest list, I make sure to mingle the most interesting groups at a time, so everyone isn't trapped talking about the weather.
What advice would you give to men who want to embody the essence of a Southern Gentleman in today’s world?
I would tell them to buy their spouse or partner a nice gift quarterly and get off their phones for one to two hours a day.
Do you feel that the values of a Southern Gentleman are fading in today’s society, or are they still alive and well?
I think they are alive; we are living in a time now that is so fast-paced; it’s so refreshing to see someone open a door, help someone in need, and have an actual conversation about things that matter.
What are some memorable examples of gentlemanly behavior you've witnessed at weddings?
In twenty years of weddings, there are too many to tell, but once a father of th bride made a point to speak to every single guest at least once. They had 650 guests - but he did it! My tongue would be stuck to the roof of my mouth.
On the flip side, have you ever encountered behavior at weddings that you would consider less than gentlemanly?
Have I!!!??? I am lucky to not be institutionalized! That's a lot of groomsmen to deal with! You know I've seen it ALL.
What Southern traditions do you hold dear and try to incorporate into your everyday life and events?
These usually revolve around family gatherings, so many of my entertaining tricks came from my grandparents and parents. I want everyone to feel as loved and comforted as we do at our own family celebrations. There's nothing like a roaring fire at Christmas and plenty of backyard lightning bug-catching jars in the summer!
What is the one thing you do not go a day without?
Laughing with my sister about an old story. Somehow, they get better every time we tell them! That's so Southern…to keep telling the same stories over and over again!
celebrating twenty
This May, Jeff and I will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the man I get to call my husband. Jeff is truly one of a kind—he’s part of the small few born and raised in Franklin, making it special.
Jeff has a heart for the Lord, a work ethic that never quits, and a genuine love for people.
May 29, 2005
THE BEGINNING Over 21 years ago, I was finishing work at the mall when Jeff approached me to buy a phone clip. My first words to him were,
“You got Sprint?”
Jeff’s
reply?
“Well, you’re countryer than a bean sandwich.” Today
TODAY here we are —three amazing boys and two crazy dogs—living life and livin’ the dream.
Jeff is my husband, my rock, and my greatest blessing. I’m so proud to call him mine. As we celebrate this milestone, I’m grateful for the love, laughter, and adventures we’ve shared—and excited for the next 20 years.
Jeff, thank you for being you. Here’s to us and the beautiful life we’ve built together.

THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF ENGAGEMENT RINGS
BY JULIE WALTON GARLAND THIRD-GENERATION OF WALTON’S JEWELRY
As the third-generation owner of Walton’s Antique and Estate Jewelry, I’ve had the joy of seeing countless engagement rings, each with its unique story and style. Engagement rings aren’t just symbols of love; they’re also a window into history, carrying the artistry, culture and innovations of their time. At Walton’s Jewelry, we’ve spent over fifty years curating rings that carry these stories, and their histories never cease to amaze us.
The tradition of engagement rings dates back centuries, with diamonds gradually becoming a favored symbol of eternal love over time. Even before the rise of diamonds, ancient cultures used rings to represent commitment. The Egyptians exchanged simple bands of braided reeds, believing the circle symbolized eternity. They also placed these rings on the fourth finger of the left hand, a tradition born from the idea that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart.
By the GEORGIAN ERA (1714–1837), engagement rings became true works of art, characterized by intricate metalwork and romantic designs inspired by nature. Jewelers worked with early diamond cuts, crafting pieces that felt almost like miniature sculptures. Moving into the Victorian era, sentimentality took center stage. Rings were adorned with floral motifs, colorful gemstones, and even hidden messages, echoing the romance and grandeur of the time.
The TURN OF THE 20TH CENTURY
brought fresh innovation. The Art Nouveau movement, emerging in France around 1890, embraced organic, flowing lines, while Edwardian jewelers turned to platinum, creating rings so delicate they resembled lace. These periods reflect a love of detail and craftsmanship that feels timeless.
Then came ART DECO, roaring in with bold geometric shapes and vibrant gemstones. These rings embodied the modern spirit of the 1920s, symbolizing freedom and individuality. Even during the Retro era, when materials were scarce due to World War II, jewelers found creative ways to make bold, glamorous designs using yellow gold and synthetic gems.
Every era leaves its mark on engagement rings, shaping their beauty and meaning. At Walton’s Jewelry, we believe these pieces are more than jewelry—they’re stories, waiting to become part of your own. Whether it’s an Edwardian masterpiece or a bold Art Deco treasure, every ring carries the magic of the past into your future.

Small businesses are the heart of Williamson County, and we’re giving them the tools to succeed with our brand-new Small Business Workshop series. These three-part workshops dive deep into topics that matter most. Kicking off the year is "Sales Conversations That Convert,” led by none other than Jay Deluca, the
mastermind behind over fifteen Nothing Bundt Cake locations. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to level up, this is the place to be.
We’re also doubling down on workforce development. Through our partnership with Williamson County Schools, we’ll host Manufacturing Day and STEAM Day, giving students hands-on exposure to exciting local careers. And programs like the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center will continue inspiring tomorrow’s leaders today.
Our focus remains on bringing high-paying jobs to Williamson County and fostering partnerships that pave the way for long-term progress.

STUDIO TENN THEATRE COMPANY

Blessed is an understatement when one describes the talent that middle Tennessee, especially Williamson County, holds. From singing to acting to dancing–Studio Tenn Theatre Company brings all this talent to the stage, as well as behind the curtain, to offer show-stopping performances right here in our community. In its fifteenth year, Studio Tenn has established a reputation as a professional regional theater company that is invested in being communityoriented. Their mission is to captivate and inspire with Broadway-quality musicals, plays and concerts–while educating the next generation to create and delight in the experience of live theater.
Under the artistic direction of Patrick Cassidy, the company has consistently
raised the bar for regional theater. Patrick, a seasoned performer and director with decades of experience, speaks passionately about the vision that drives Studio Tenn, the careful planning that goes into each season and his commitment to community and storytelling. “I try to make sure there's something for everyone,” Patrick explains. “Some shows are just pure fun, while others invite you to think and discuss. For me, it’s about diversity—not just in content, but in what’s on the stage. I try to create a balance of what people expect, what they know and what they’ll discover.”
Creating a season isn’t just about selecting plays and musicals that will sell tickets. It’s a careful balancing act—one that takes into account the tastes of the community, the artistic integrity of the shows and the availability of local talent. "It's an intricate process," Patrick shares. "How many musicals should we do? How many plays? What works for our local audience? Franklin, where Studio

Tenn is based, has a different vibe from downtown Nashville, and I want to make sure we have a season that speaks to both." His approach also reflects his deep respect for Southern culture. He notes that while he’s not strictly focused on works from the South, there’s always a nod to regional heritage. “This season, Crimes of the Heart is our southern piece—an exploration of family dynamics and the complexity of relationships.”
to work with you again.'"
One of Patrick’s primary goals for Studio Tenn is to foster the next generation of theater artists. With the company’s strong educational partnerships— especially with Williamson County Schools—he hopes to inspire young people to explore the magic of live theater. "We want to bring kids into our shows, show them how we build sets, design costumes and operate the lights," he says. "We want them to see that it’s not just about what happens on stage—it’s the whole ecosystem… It’s about giving them the tools and resources they need to pursue their dreams, whether that’s acting, directing or behind-the-scenes work."
As a nonprofit organization, Studio Tenn relies heavily on donations and sponsorships. Patrick acknowledges that ticket sales only cover a portion of the costs involved in producing high-quality theater. "Ticket sales cover about fifty percent of our costs," he says. "The rest comes from donations and corporate sponsors. It’s an ongoing challenge, but we’re fortunate to have a dedicated team working to build those relationships and bring in new donors." Patrick emphasizes that it’s not just about financial contributions— community engagement is key. "Getting people involved in the theater,
Casting is a point of pride for Patrick. "I’m meticulous about casting," he says. "Having been an actor myself, I know how crucial it is to get the right people in the room." Studio Tenn is proud to showcase local talent, but Patrick also recognizes that certain shows may require bringing in professionals from outside the area. "This season, we had to bring in talent from New York for Jersey Boys and Million Dollar Quartet," he says. "But ninety percent of our shows are cast locally. The talent pool here is incredible. I love discovering new faces—there’s nothing more exciting than finding someone and thinking, ‘I want
