With every passing year, competition in education becomes tougher. Every student wants to do better than their peers to secure the best possible education to get on the right path to a successful career. Even educational institutes have been vying with each other to go one up on their competitors. Such a positive competition can only mean one thing for students – the institutes are better equipped to give them the best facilities they deserve. But here is where the dilemmas arise for the student. Which university to pick? Which course best suits my career needs? Which is the best university available for me?

BIPIN BALAKRISHNAN MOULVI ABBAS HASAN

To help solve a few of these problems, we have ranked the top 100 universities in the world. After months of tumultuous research work which involved contacting over 1,100 institutes, 6,500 recruiters and numerous students from over 50 countries, we present to you our Global University Rankings 2013.

But education is no longer about just studying at a university. Learning has gone through a transformational journey and today one can learn even outside a campus and within the comforts of their house with just a computer and an Internet connection. Online education, or e-learning as it is known in colloquial English, is gaining popularity for its flexible learning schedule and for the practical and add-on courses it offers. There are several online schools that can make education a more enriching experience and you can find them in our current issue.

Women’s Day is this month and we owe a lot to the fairer sex. It’s no secret that women have a tough life in India. Everyday is a battle for them and it’s remarkable how they manage to deal with it. We have thus provided a glimpse into the world of a woman with some situations she faces every now and then with advice on how to deal with them. But of all the challenges she faces, we recognise that safety is one of the toughest ones and so we have compiled a step-bystep guide on self-defence exclusive to women. Best wishes to those who will be facing their examinations soon!

MUMBAI TO GET TWO NEW MEDICAL COLLEGES

T

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is underway to turn Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi into a medical college. In view of there being no medical college in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs as well as there being inadequate government-run health facilities, the BMC has allocated a certain amount from its 2013-14 budget to turn Shatabdi into a college. The provision will also see an increase in bed strength from 250 to 400. The BMC is also working on setting up a medical college on the premises of Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle.

Gujarat to allot 40% weightage to JEE

T

he Gujarat state government has decided to allot 40% weightage to the All India Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and 60% weightage to marks scored in science subjects in the HSC board examinations for the final merit list concerning admission to engineering and other professional courses in the state. The state recently agreed to the JEE being the criterion for admission to professional courses as opposed to the previous Gujarat Common Entrance Test. However, the Minister of State for Education decided to keep the previous ratio of the 40-60 weightage instead of the Union Ministry of Education’s advised 50-50 ratio. The decision was taken keeping in mind inputs from parents and students. JEE will be compulsory for those seeking a place in engineering colleges. The written examination will be held on 7 April and the online examination will be between 8 and 25 April.

Distance education allows students to pursue more than one degree

News

China offers scholarship for Indian students

T

he Huawei Maitree Scholarship 2013 has been announced for the academic year 2013-14. The Huawei Scholarship offered by global information and communication technology company Huawei will allow Indian students a shot at higher education in China. There will be 10 scholarships provided by credible and reputed institutions in China for students who are looking to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in emerging areas of science and technology, culture and social studies and development-related programmes. The scholarship will cover the full tuition fee and living expenses of the student for the period of one academic year and can be renewed on a year-to-year basis for the duration of the programme under the condition of attaining 80 per cent marks in the previous academic year. A selection committee will be appointed to shortlist applicants and finalise the awarding of scholarships after interviews. The scholarships will be awarded based on merit, character, aptitude and the purpose of the study.

IIM-A HOPES TO RETAIN AUTONOMY

A

lthough students cannot pursue two degrees simultaneously under normal circumstances, distance education will now make it possible for a student to pursue more than just one degree at a time. In a decision made by the Distance Education Council (DEC), students will be able to pursue two programmes simultaneously through distance education or through a combination of distance and regular education. The programme combinations as mentioned by the DEC will allow students to pursue one degree and one diploma/ postgraduate diploma/certificate, one postgraduate diploma and one diploma/certificate, one diploma and one certificate, two postgraduate diplomas, two diplomas or two certificates. The DEC also stated that the programmes can be pursued through distance or a combination of distance and regular modes from the same or different universities/institutes.

T

he Union HRD ministry proposed an IIM Bill which will bring all the IIMs under one common umbrella. However, IIM Ahemdabad hopes to stay out this bracket in order to retain its autonomy. The directors on the board of IIM-A believe that each IIM should be allowed to decide its future. IIM-A has been recruiting reputed persons into its board of governors with a view to compete among the top international business schools. The board at IIM-A is of the opinion that while newer IIMs may require an IIM umbrella organisation for financial support, IIM-A is financially stable and surrendering to the umbrella structure will only lead to a lapse in its autonomy which will not allow it to compete in the global business school market. _WALK OF LIFE

WORKING THROUGH FAILURE AT WORK

Making too many mistakes at work can shake your boss’s faith in you and shatter your confidence. Before you get worked up, go through our list of tips to help you deal with failure at work

F

ailure is said to be a stepping stone to success. But the higher the number of failures isn’t necessarily a guarantee of a successful career. To err is human but sitting back in your armchair isn’t going to get you where you want to be. For that, you need to highlight your failing points and work towards making more of yourself to do better in your professional life.

14 Youth Incorporated ║ MARCH 2013

14 Walk of Life.indd 14

20-02-2013 16:22:48

1. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?

Sometimes it is all about attitude. Whether you are on the failing path or you are simply stagnant in your position, attitude can make all the difference. If you see yourself as constantly failing, you will be stuck in a rut so you need to change your perception of yourself. A useful exercise is to remind yourself of three successful projects you have managed for every failure that you see happening. Take pointers from your successful projects and make a format to work on your future projects so you can tackle the problems before they happen. The right attitude will help you stay on track to success even if you do have a few slip ups along the way. Oprah Winfrey once said, “It is not failure if you enjoyed the process”.

2. DON’T BE A RADIO

If you have made a mistake, chances are your boss knows about it. But there is no need for everyone else in the office to know about it. If you have a confidant in your office that can help you make the best of the situation, then by all means discuss it with them. But broadcasting your mistake might just make you the topic of water cooler conversations, which can be a downer for your morale and stop you from moving on to a more successful career.

3. SUCCESS OF OTHERS IS NONE OF YOUR CONCERN Many people tend to put pressure on themselves if their colleagues are performing better than them. If you are one of those people, you may be

putting road blocks in your career without realising it. If the people around you are succeeding with their jobs, it shouldn’t affect you in any way. Thinking that you should match up to the laurels of your colleague, or a parent, or even matching the standards of your boss, may hamper

FAMOUS FAILURES Walt Disney was working at a local newspaper when he was fired for lacking imagination and having no good ideas. He went on to establish one of the world’s biggest production companies and created some of the world’s most recognisable fictional characters. Oprah Winfrey was an evening television news reporter who was fired for being too emotionally connected to her stories. She was shifted to daytime television from where she made a name for herself and ultimately became a worldfamous talk show host. Steve Jobs was fired from managerial positions at Apple in 1985 after a tiff with a colleague resulted in the board of directors voting him out. Jobs later rejoined Apple and eventually created some of the most innovative products we use today. your growth. You should set goals for yourself to achieve and work towards achieving them without being sidetracked by a promotion that went to someone else or a project you thought you could do better which is in your colleagues hands.

4. MAKE A CHECKLIST. CHECK!

If you are working on time bound projects, it is a good idea to make a checklist of things to be done. This will give you a time frame and a schedule to make sure you complete your project ahead of time. You will also be able to leave yourself wiggle room to smooth out any problems in your initial draft. It is also important to remember that mistakes tend to happen; anything that can go wrong will go wrong. So you could go one step further and make a second checklist of things that could go wrong. This will help you eliminate the chances of mistakes and reduce the possibility of failure.

5. PLAYING THE GAME OF OFFICE POLITICS

Office politics is about leveraging people and situations to bring about an outcome that you want to achieve. It isn’t necessarily about the full-blown yelling matches and the behind-the-back criticism; it can be about convincing your colleagues and bosses to use your suggestions in a project and make your voice stand out over everyone else’s. To do this, you must remember to keep a close knit group of colleagues; this will allow you to have support when you face a situation where you will need it. You could also remember that criticising someone behind their back may fall on the wrong ears so be aware of the individual relationships in the office as well as the groups. yi MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 15

DO MORE, REST LESS

Youth Inc gives you the scoop on what was discussed at the third Young Changemakers Conclave in Mumbai this year

S

ince its inception in 2010, the Young Changemakers Conclave has been a platform for young citizens to meet and listen to the ideas of leaders from various fields including business, education, social activism, law enforcement and literature. The conclave this year was the third edition organised by United Nations Information Center for India and Bhutan. It was held in Mumbai on 25th January and was curated by Samyak Chakrabarty.

This year saw a dignified group of speakers take to the stage to address the young delegates on the theme of Sustainable Development: Do More – Rest Less. The group of speakers included a list of people from a wide variety of industries who could be termed as leaders because of their revolutionary approach to their industry and for bringing about a certain positive change through their words and actions.

HERE ARE OUR FAVOURITE TAKEBACKS FROM WHAT THE LEADERS HAD TO SAY PANEL OF ENTREPRENEURS PRATAP BOSE COO, DDB Mudra

He said that starting up an entrepreneurship is a matter of a person’s DNA. He believes it is only the risk taker who will put their neck out and start a new business.

RAHUL AKERKAR Founder and MD, deGustibus Hospitality

He said that his personal experience has taught him that being an entrepreneur can be about investing a lot of time in trial and error where you learn along the way and sacrifice a lot of your time in living, breathing and sleeping with what you are doing.

SASHA MIRCHANDANI Co-Founder, Mumbai Angels

He has been backing up start-up entrepreneurs with angel funding for years and said that it is important for the person to be passionate. The person should be ready to leave the security of a steady job and salary to dedicate all their time to their start-up because it is only then that they will do whatever it takes to get the job done.

things to flourish. She also said that sustainability means to value, maintain and celebrate the rich diversity of all living things.

GREGORY DAVID ROBERTS Author, Shantaram

DR SATYAPAL SINGH Commissioner of Police, Mumbai

The Commissioner of Police amusingly mentioned that journalists are free to comment on whatever they feel like but police are criticised. When addressing a question regarding moral policing, he agreed that archaic laws should have no place in current society but also said that policemen can only implement laws and the law makers are the ones who should make the changes. He also said that police who are recruited from smaller towns are sensitised through workshops when they are assigned to work in big cities to break the cultural divide.

RAHUL BOSE Founder, The Foundation

In addressing the not-for-profit sector, Rahul Bose said scale and sustainability are most important. He shared a personal experience of donating a utility vehicle to one of the islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands when he was told by the village chief that people usually say they would return to help but his organisation was the only one that kept its word and the act of kindness really touched the hearts of the chief and villagers.

ZARINA MEHTA Managing Trustee, Swades Foundation

Ms Mehta provided a new definition for sustainability by describing it as the right of all living

The famous author highlighted the need for ethics in the business world. He shared an interesting story of rival companies Adidas and Puma who originated in a little known village in Germany. The rivalry between the companies resulted in the village being torn into two factions based on loyalties to the companies. When he was assigned the task of re-branding Puma, he suggested ending the feud which was accomplished by the two companies hosting a friendly football match after 65 years of enmity. He stated that companies should have friendly relations to share resources for growth and sustainable development.

WILLIAM H AVERY Author, China’s Nightmare, America’s Dream: India as the next Global Power

Will Avery stated that 12 crore of India’s population is at university age at present but only two crore of this population is currently enrolled in higher education istitutes. He highlighted the fact that top universities in the world have allowed everyone to access their course study material by placing it online and that Indian institutes should follow suit to empower the less privileged. yi

PANEL DISCUSSION ON EDUCATION Moderated by SHAHEEN MISTRI, CEO, Teach For India PROF NW SHIVDASANI Principal, Jai Hind College

He said education is a very significant tool for sustainability and that educators should question the current boundaries up to which they can provide empowerment.

DR INDU SHAHANI Sheriff of Mumbai & Dean, HR College

She claimed that the role of education is to sensitise the privileged to the world of the underprivileged which is around it. She stated that education began with a simple mantra of ‘Classrooms to careers’ but has moved towards a different mantra which is ‘Classrooms to careers to communities’.

FR FRAZER MASCARENHAS Principal, St. Xavier’s College

He said that we should change our lifestyle and claimed that the youth needs to change the paradigm and think in oppositional ways. They should question why mangroves are to be cut down to make way for a new airport instead of reducing the number of flights to preserve the ecology.

After months of extensive research involving the survey of 1100 institutes, 6500 recruiters and thousands of students, Youth Inc reveals the top 100 universities in the world for undergraduate study

A

n exercise in ranking the best higher education institutes of the world is no mean task. Information gathering in itself is an exhaustive exercise, while number-crunching and analysing gives meaning to the massive raw data. The aim of the Youth Incorporated, Education Times and Rediff.com Global University Rankings 2013 through this sophisticated exercise is to identify and ascertain the universities in the world that are fulfilling their commitment to provide quality education. The study was conducted over several months using research and survey inputs from thousands of people in more than 50 countries. We have brought together a large group of responses from not just institutes but also

from current students. Additionally, feedback from 6,500 known recruiters on their experience of recruiting graduates from the institutes has greatly enhanced the survey. Thus, the universities were ranked using the responses of three indigenous groups based on factors that include financial aid, campus facilities, diversity of students, career prospects and more. The survey also allowed us to go one step further and provide you with more specialised rankings which take into account individual factors such as campus facilities, value for money and exchange programmes that come into play when picking a university. We have also ranked the best universities based on regional distribution and have provided separate rankings of the best institutes in study streams such as engineering, the arts, management and the sciences.

WHAT’S CHANGED FROM 2011-2012?

Our last survey conducted in 20112012 allows for a comparison which can be seen in the rankings. While it would be expected that the top 10 rankers of any list would remain consistent over time, our results show a shift in the top 10 of the global rankings within the space of a year. Not only have the top 10 shifted spots, one among the top 3 has given way to another institute. While Harvard University and Stanford University have retained their positions of number 1 and 2 respectively, the previously thirdranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology has slipped down to four to make way for University of Pennsylvania. The rest of the top 10 seems to be similar, barring Imperial College London which makes way for the addition of Princeton University. On a quick glance, it is apparent that the United States dominates in the realm of higher education. The only non-American university in the top 10 is Oxford which has also seen a drop in rank from our previous survey.

The Indian contingent on the list seems to be on the rise – four Indian institutes have made it to the top 100, as opposed to only one in our 2011-2012 ranking effort. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Mumbai has moved up to 19 from its previous position at 31. Accompanying it are IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur and the University of Delhi which rank at 27, 79 and 99 respectively. We believe that the educational reforms being implemented in the country are responsible for the increasing visibility of Indian higher education institutes in our global ranking exercise. That said, our rankings also reflect that institutes other than the IITs are not competent enough to feature with

the world’s best institutes, a revelation that should be an impetus to take a long, hard look at the state of higher education in India. Last month, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh acknowledged the dismal state of higher education in the country. “We must recognise that too many of our higher educational institutions are simply not up to the mark,” he said. “Too many of them have simply not kept abreast with the rapid changes that have taken place in the world around us in recent years, still producing graduates in subjects that the job market no longer requires.” In addition, President Pranab Mukherjee encouraged private players to enter the education sector and contribute towards its improvement. However, a study conducted by IDFC indicates that despite such efforts, the higher education sector in India remains “over regulated and under governed”. Pending education bills, restrictive regulations and cumbersome laws are some roadblocks that discourage private sector involvement. The study also suggests that autonomy practised with accountability could be a possible solution to this mess.

THERE IS SUFFICIENT GENDER DIVERSITY IN MY CLASS

A whopping 60% of students who are currently attending these universities believe that their classroom doesn’t have an appropriate male-female ratio. This comes as a shock since our last survey recorded a 45% discrepancy; instead of improving the count of males to females, there has been a backslide in the gender ratio present in top universities.

The survey shows that students currently enrolled in these top universities are divided on the number of international students present in their classroom. There is an even 50% that believe there are sufficient international students enrolled in their university while the other 50% believe there aren’t enough international students. Our last survey showed that 60% students found a positive international diversity in their institutes.

e chose institutes across the world after having discussions with thousands of students, recruiters and faculty. Youth Inc’s Research Unit (YRU) also studied domestic rankings in various countries to find the best institutes. We sent survey links to 1,100 institutes and provided them with unique codes so that they could submit their responses online. Current students of the institutes were asked to specify the stream they were studying and then rate specific statements which were pertaining to the factors considered in this ranking. Several institutes directly contacted their current students and recruiters and asked them to take part in our survey. Over 6,500 recruiters were sent emails with the survey link. The recruiter list was prepared from the responses of the institutes and also included internationally well-known recruiters. Below are the factors we considered and the overall weightage assigned to them: ♦Careers, ♦ recruitment and industry viability of students – 55% ♦Diversity ♦ and international outlook – 10% ♦Innovation ♦ – 10% ♦Campus, ♦ extracurricular activities, exchange programmes – 15% ♦Money, ♦ student satisfaction – 10%

CAREERS, RECRUITMENT AND INDUSTRY VIABILITY OF STUDENTS – 55%

This category significantly impacts the overall score of an institute since it is the most weighted factor. One of the most important criteria to select institutes is the student’s industry viability after graduation. Recruiters were asked to list and rate the institutes that they were most likely to recruit from. They were asked the likelihood of recruiting again from the same institute and their satisfaction with the institute’s careers cell. Recruiters rated students

z

x-µ = σ

Standard Deviation (σ) calculations show us how much variation exists from the average or the mean. A Z-score, also known as standard score, z-value, or normal score indicates by how many standard deviations datum (x) is above or below the mean (µ). Simply put, Z-scores tell us how far or close particular data is to the mean. Standard Deviation and Z-scores helps us compare individual scores from different bunches of data at high confidence levels. on various factors including analytical and problem solving skills, leadership potential, communication and interpersonal skills and so on. Institutes and students were also asked about the availability and functioning of a career services cell on campus and how active such a service was. We also considered what percentage of students were actually placed, both domestically and internationally, through the institute’s career services cell. Students also reported the availability and ease of obtaining internships.

DIVERSITY AND INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK – 10%

This category looks not only at diversity of faculty but also at diversity of students in the classroom. The international outlook includes international students that are attracted and retained by the institute. Institutes were asked to report the total number of students on campus and what percentage of the students were international and speak two or more languages. Gender diversity of the students was considered. Institutes also reported the percentage of the faculty that were international, hold a doctorate degree and accredited with their own publishing material along with the

gender diversity of the faculty. Students were asked to rate the student and faculty diversity in their class.

INNOVATION – 10%

This category looks at how innovatively programmes are constructed and taught and how faculty engage the students – an important factor in the overall perception of an institute. We considered the different ways in which an institute constructs programmes. Institutes were asked to select from a list of different teaching methodologies that we considered innovative – some of these included company visits, dual or multiple majors and course collaborations between different departments at the institute. Our list was made after surveying students across different campuses worldwide. Students were asked to report how satisfied they are with faculty who use innovative ways to teach subjects.

CAMPUS, EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES – 15% This category considers the support students receive on campus and the availability of extracurricular activities. The exchange programmes

offered by the institute and how actively students are encouraged to opt for such programmes was also considered. We asked institutes to indicate the different types of assistance provided by the student office or a similar body on campus. Our initial list was made after surveying students across different campuses worldwide. Students reported if they were encouraged by the institute to participate in different extracurricular activities on campus. Institutes were asked to report the percentage of students that opted for exchange programmes. We also considered the exchange students present on the institute’s campus.

MONEY, STUDENT SATISFACTION – 10%

This category takes into account a critical part of education today – finances. And more importantly, how satisfied a student is with the institute.

We considered students’ opinions on whether a particular institute was perceived as ‘value for money’. We also asked institutes to state the percentage of students who received some sort of funding from the institutes. Students were asked to rate their institutes on various factors including attitude of staff and professors, location, course content and so on and institutes were asked to report the graduation rate of students enrolled and what percentage of students transfer out of the institution.

SCORES

We calculated the standard deviation and standard scores (Z-scores) so that we could combine and analyse the data with more accuracy and reliability. Below is a summary of the factors and the weightage given to each factor when we ranked the institutes. Each factor was made up of a set of questions. The total percentage attributed to that factor was based Institute

on the average score of the responses multiplied by the assigned weightage. The total scores were then sorted from highest to lowest. The institute with the highest score was ranked first.

NOT JUST NUMBERS

After we calculated the total computed scores for the institutes, we subjectively analysed the data provided by the institutes, current students and recruiters. If we found discrepancies in the satisfaction scores and the subjective descriptions, we omitted the data.

MISSING DATA

In a few rare occasions, some institutes did not supply data for all the questions in the survey. When data was missing, which affected factors which were low-weighted such as value for money or campus support, we entered an estimate between the average and the lowest value reported by the institute. By following such a practice we did not excessively penalise an institution with a ‘zero’ for data that it could not provide. At the same time, the institute was not rewarded.

EXCLUSION OF INSTITUTES

Only institutes that offered undergraduate programmes were included in the ranking. Hence, some institutes were disqualified from our ranking because they reported data pertaining to graduate programmes.

INSTITUTES THAT DID NOT FILL OUT THE SURVEY REPORTS ON TIME

Of the 1,100 institutes that were contacted, 23 per cent of the institutes did not complete the survey on time or did not respond. We used publicly available information on some of these institutes to include them in our ranking. We also contacted current students and recruiters of these institutes and compared the data we received with the data from institutes that participated in our survey. yi

I

f you ask Aritra Mukherjee, Editor-in-chief of Bigg Boss Season 6, to summarise his experience of directing the immensely popular show, his immediate answer is “I would do it all the time”. Mukherjee confesses that as a television producer you never know what’s coming your way. “Every day has been a new experience while working on Bigg Boss,” he says. Over the last decade, television has seen the rise and fall of several trends

such as game shows, daily soaps and most recently, reality television. While the nature of work varies according to ‘genre’, what remains consistent is a team of producers who are responsible for the development and execution of the show.

ONE JOB, MANY ROLES “Very often, as a TV producer, one needs to be a writer, director, cinematographer, editor and a producer, all rolled into one,” says

Sakshi Khanna, Executive Producer at Channel [V]. In addition, it helps to possesses people skills as one needs to effectively co-ordinate with various departments and quite often, there are fragile egos involved. From briefing stylists and make-up artists to supervising lighting and camera placements, there’s a reason why television producers see grey hair a little early in life.

THINK FAST!

As a television producer, there is only one thing you can be sure of and that is chaos. There will be celebrity tantrums, shooting schedules will go haywire, deadlines will be pushed around and there will be sleepless

nights at edit studios. “It is a highly dynamic job where you look at every aspect of the show from its inception to its completion”, says Khanna. “The various stages include ideating, scripting, budgeting, pre-production, casting, art, setting a look, tone and feel for the show, execution of the idea, and finally the editing of the show.” Talking about the most challenging part of directing Bigg Boss, Mukherjee says, “The contestants on the show are human, therefore, if they decide to not talk to each other, you can’t force them to do otherwise. So you need to create tasks and spikes to generate content. There are also times when there are fights and one person in the house turns really aggressive, then bringing

• Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai • Amity School of Communication, Noida • New York Film Academy (NYFA), various branches back stability in the house can also be challenging.”

DOES A DEGREE HELP?

According to Khanna, who has more than thirteen years of experience in the field of television, a degree in television production is not a pre-requisite to enter the industry. “I didn’t have a degree in television back in the day when I joined,” she explains. “And I know a whole bunch of superbly talented people from the industry who have gone on to achieve a lot without

PROFESSIONALS Speak Sakshi Khanna, Executive Producer, Channel [V] “It is definitely a fabulous industry with lots of drama, excitement, travel, glamour, but it is definitely not for the faint-hearted. It requires real hard work, diligence, investment of time and energy, like any other industry. And lots of talent, without which you won’t survive the big bad world for too long.” Aritra Mukherjee, Creative Consultant, Endemol India “To be a successful TV producer, you need to have common sense and some amount of technical knowledge. In the past 4-5 years, I have seen young people enter the industry without basic knowledge of lighting and camera techniques. It is important to have a strong technical foundation and the common sense; the rest can be learnt on the job.”

having as much as a graduation degree. Having said that, I believe these are highly competitive times we live in and that television is now looked upon as a respectable, viable and lucrative career option. It would probably help to get a little know-how from a good institute before you enter it as it could give you an edge over others who don’t take the education. It could also help eliminate wastage of time in figuring out what you’d like to do within the television industry”.

LET’S TALK MONEY

When asked about the biggest perk one enjoys as a television producer Mukherjee’s candid reply is “Lots of money!” Although he goes on to list other perks such as the dynamic pace of work, the opportunity of travel and meeting new people, he’s not kidding about the money. Television production is a highly lucrative field, once you work your way up that is. As a fresher, you will mostly start as an assistant producer and earn around `2 lakhs per annum, depending on the organisation you work with. As you work your way up to senior designations (supervising producer, executive producer, etc) your earnings could go up to around `12 lakhs per annum. But with deadlines staring you in the face while you try to tackle constant road blocks, you definitely will be earning every penny.

THE THRILLS OF TV

Money is not the only gratification one enjoys in television. The opportunity to develop and execute a show has several rewarding moments: when you come up with that great idea during an arduous brainstorming session, when you hear the two most soothing words in television (pack up) or when you experience that nervous anticipation minutes before your show goes on air. To be able to successfully entertain millions of viewers is challenging, exciting, exhausting and rewarding. Those who can handle the ride find themselves relishing the many thrills of television. yi MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 41

WHAT’S COOKING, GOOD LOOKING? P icture a thick stream of cool, orange juice sloshing into a tall, clear glass, followed by three perfect ice cubes falling into the glass. It’s enticing. Now picture this: a thick stream of coloured, diluted corn syrup sloshing into a tall, clear glass, followed by three perfect acrylic cubes falling into the glass. It’s not even palatable, but this is the very orange juice you might see in an advertisement or on a juice

box. And it is a food stylist who tricks you into thinking that what you are seeing is not junk but a refreshing glass of orange juice. A food stylist is to food roughly like a makeup artist is to models. But unlike models, food rarely cooperates under the hot and tiresome strobe lights. For instance, ice-cream becomes a gooey mess within minutes under the lights. For many years, food stylists relied on tricks, like mashed

potatoes with colouring instead of real ice-cream, to photograph food. Now stylists use real ice-cream, but the challenge of preserving it through a shoot is still there.

FIRST STEPS

While there is no formal degree in food styling, professionals come into this occupation via cognate fields – usually hotel management and home science. Love for food is an

are. Food stylists work on a freelance basis and are hired by restaurants, magazines, cookbook publishers and packaged food businesses.

obvious prerequisite, as is an interest in cooking procedures and methods, and a certain degree of fearlessness in experimenting with them, so a background in culinary training is desirable. Several hotel management institutes are considering food styling as an alternative career option, but there are no courses in this field yet.

AIDING SKILLS

What looks good to the eye will not necessarily always look good through a camera lens. “The ability to visualise, to have a keen sense of design and [knowledge of] photography,” sums up Mumbai-based chef and food stylist Michael Swamy while describing an ideal stylist. Adds Indranie Dasgupta,

a Delhi-based stylist, “Must be fit, patient, ready with all things required, work as a team with the agency, client, photographer, know when to direct and when to take order, and be prepared to work as long as it takes to get the perfect shot.” A food stylist must be able to visualise food in a way that looks good for the camera. In many instances, food stylists themselves also take on the duties of a food photographer because they know best how to capture their vision and designs.

JOB PROSPECTS

Food styling is a lucrative career in India, considering how serious a business hospitality and catering

“In advertising everything is glamourised... or else why do they use Aishwarya [Rai] to model for face cream and not me? A photograph has to look good or else why show it at all?” - INDRANIE DASGUPTA

REMUNERATION

You might start off assisting another food stylist until you find your feet. Since assignments are on a freelance basis, clients might dictate the paycheque in your initial years and pay you a few thousand rupees. Says Dasgupta, “Some of my students are charging `5000 a day to begin with, and in New York stylists (established ones) charge $1000 per day.” As your experience increases, the pay rises too. When you become an independent and established stylist, you can fix your charges.

CHALLENGES

“The biggest challenge is understanding exactly the clients requirement and being 100 per cent prepared for a shoot and being ready to work long hours with dedication and concentration,” Dasgupta says. Additionally, when working with clients, food stylists realise that they are dealing with people unaware of the many intricacies involved in styling. The challenge here, as Swamy puts it, is “handling ignorant clients, handling art directors who are kids who only think of copying designs rather than working [with] someone’s creativity.” Food stylists spend a lot of time perfecting the look of a dish and handpick the components of the dish that will feature in the final shot. For example, to photograph of a bowl of rice, every grain of rice is handpicked with a pair of tweezers and arranged on the surface. Then there is also the issue of the destructive nature of bright studio lights. Food stylists are thus always equipped with extra food, mostly by the kilo, for photo shoots, and are always willing to redo dishes. If you relish being served a large helping of challenges with portions of creativity, aesthetics, and, of course, food, then food styling is a viable career choice for you. yi MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 43

_FOCUS FEATURE

EDUCATION IN R CYBERSPACE

od Paige, former U.S. Secretary of Education, famously commented in 2002 – a period when Internet penetration was woefully low – “Education is the only business still debating the usefulness of technology.” Eleven years on, it can be stated that the debate has been settled and the Internet has been identified as technology critical in advancing affordable education and curating ideas. As Internet penetration steadily climbs, online education, or e-learning as it is referred to in popular parlance, is gaining traction in India. An article in the Times of India forecast India’s online education market expanding into a $40 billion industry by 2017, a 100 per cent rise from current levels. In spite of having one of the largest education systems in the world with a network of more than 1 million schools and 18,000 higher education institutions, levels of education and literacy haven’t necessarily inspired confidence. A concerted campaign to develop and integrate online learning tools with traditional methods of imparting knowledge can go a long way in filling this lacuna.

INITIATIVES OF THE GOVERNMENT

As the Internet evolves before our very eyes, it takes on every role imaginable – entertainer, informer, communicator and even educator. Nisarg Kamdar analyses the e-learning trend and what it means for India’s future

Having recognized the challenge of educating such a populous country plagued by a severe scarcity of teachers and decrepit infrastructure, the government has devoted a substantial amount of its resources to establishing a vigorous foundation for online education. The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning or NPTEL is a government-sponsored initiative to develop curriculum-based content to aid engineering education of undergraduates. A large number of videos from some of the premier institutes of the country have been hosted on the website with the sole aim of enhancing the quality and the approach to technical education in India. Phase 1 has some 600 courses being covered. Phase 2 of the programme envisages the entire spectrum of the IITs, NITs and IISc being content generators. The credibility and impact of the enterprise will be catapulted, once value-added case studies are appended and experiential learning features are implemented. Phase 2 marks a major milestone with its inclusion of question banks and case studies

in the courses, which is a euphemism for enforcing herd mentality. The provenance of innovation and research is embedded in questions arising from the unencumbered cognitive centres of the pupil rather than being fed with questions to ponder over. The latter is a self defeating exercise and it would be a sheer tragedy to burden online education with this burden.

MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSES (MOOCS)

MOOCs have fundamentally altered the education that was being imparted, and engineered a global shift in the scope, blurring the limitations which so distinctly existed only yesterday. Geographical boundaries have been bulldozed, and attending a class in Political Science offered by MIT is eminently possible. There is a critical difference which delineates this bunch

Geographical boundaries have been bulldozed, and attending a class in Political Science offered by MIT is possible[...]The experience is augmented by social interaction [and] [...]features such as peerreviewed papers of resources from your regular animated curriculum material – the experience is engrossing and augmented by social interaction, thus enabling features such as peer-reviewed papers. Aniket Parikh, a second year student of Mining Engineering at IIT Kanpur, opines, “I believe that even though e-learning definitely has long-term potential in India, the right way to go about it is systematically via establishment of prerequisite infrastructure and distribution conduits.” Indians are the second largest group registering on e-learning websites, which is testimony to the growing influence of online education and sustained shift towards a more refined approach to intellectual stimulation. Anant Agarwal, president of edX, a not-for-profit Harvard-MIT joint venture,

was the benefactor of $60 million in funding to host a huge basket of lectures from the colleges online, believes that MOOCs are “the single biggest change in education since the printing press.” The influence of these resources is further amplified by the inability of a substantial number of major universities in offering simultaneous dual degrees. In the 21st century where one is expected to possess a working knowledge of every element and field one interacts with during the course of his professional work, such monolithic systems are strenuous and counterproductive. There should be a clear move towards encouraging enrolling for dual undergraduate courses simultaneously. An upcoming field is patent lawsuits, for which one needs to be familiar with the finer nuances of law and technology. Unfortunately, this is a field dominated by lawyers with absolutely no knowledge of the technical intricacies. Rather, an engineer or lawyer resorts to online MOOCs to gain familiarity with the opposite field as the university still seems reluctant to enforce these reforms. Mumbai University’s decision to allow technical degrees to be pursued in conjunction with legal qualifications must be applauded in this light.

in this country is beyond reproach, but a certain degree of caution is indispensable when observing the participation of Indian companies and universities in this. Their work has left a lot to be desired and one ends with the hope that Indian companies would refrain from rebranding the various audio and video cassettes that were popular in the ’90s as online education, but rather pioneer an era of revolutionary education tools, available across the length and breadth of the country. yi

JAYANTI GHOSE

Jayanti Ghose is a career and education consultant. She holds an honours degree in economics and a degree in education. Her research in career counselling and guidance spans more than 25 years. She pioneered the concept of career counselling and career writing in the print media. She is actively involved in personal and group counselling.

CHARTERED ACCOUNTANCY Q: I will be completing my graduation this year. I wish to train as a chartered accountant. Is it possible for me to join the course without passing CPT? Arul ANSWER ANSWER

You would be able to register directly for Intermediate (Integrated Professional Competence) Course without passing the CPT if you secure a minimum of 55 per cent of the total marks or its equivalent in BCom/MCom. Other graduates or postgraduates with a minimum of 60 per cent of the total marks or its equivalent grade in the examination conducted by any recognised university (including Open University) would also be eligible. Candidates who have passed the Intermediate level examination or its equivalent by The Institute of Cost Accountants of India or by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India would also be able to join the IPCC without CPT.

It would be advisable for him to concentrate on completing the degree course he is pursuing right now creditably. After his computer science engineering degree, if he is still interested in the technical/engineering field, can move to other branches of engineering and technology and study for an MTech/ME degree in India or complete an MS degree abroad. He can also diversify into other disciplines. He could do a law degree, an MBA or study chartered accountancy. Opting out of his engineering degree at this stage would be foolhardy and a waste of the last few years of his education. Instead, he can choose to build upon it with a higher or an entirely different degree.

CAREER CHOICES Q: I am in 3rd year BSc with maths and statistics as my subjects. What career can I choose? Suneha After your BSc, doing an MSc with Maths or Statistics or Economics, or even pursuing an MBA, or Chartered or Cost Accountancy, or MCA are recommended as these are some of the many degrees and courses that would utilise the numerical skills and analytical aptitude. However, you need not continue in this line if you do not want to and are free to explore completely different career and educational choices like journalism, law, advertising, public relations, etc. Your choice of further studies should be linked to an objective assessment of your strengths in academics, and you should ideally pick the type of career that would suit your personality and lifestyle choices.

Broadly, there are three types of scholarships at the undergraduate level. The first is offered by universities themselves to students who have secured admission, known as ‘entrance’ scholarship. This is usually meritbased and awarded to those with consistent and outstanding academic records. It is subject to the student maintaining a specified academic performance during the course. At larger universities, there would be several more awards/scholarships. Please check the websites of the institutes you have applied to. Several universities offer scholarships to meritorious international students with high academic grades under the International President’s Entrance Scholarship Program. Their value ranges between 2000 and 10,000 Canadian Dollars and are automatically awarded based on your application. There are also ‘in-course’ awards. If you don’t get a scholarship at the start of the course, based on your performance later, you become eligible for awards/ scholarships administered by the university (e.g making it to the dean’s list) or specific departments. The competition is quite stiff as these are usually open to all students, not just the international ones. The third type of scholarships are ‘external’ i.e. scholarships offered by trusts, foundations, charitable bodies, government-partnerships, etc. Often these are open to students from certain courses or streams and are very few at the undergraduate level. By and large these are open to international students. CO-OP DEGREES Q: I have heard that some universities in Canada offer ‘co-op’ programmes. What are they and are they recommended for an Indian student studying in Canada? Radha Sethi The co-op or co-operative education programme combines in-class learning with periods of actual paid work experience or placements. The total working period can be upto 2 years, thus making your degree last 5 years. While on placement, you gain practical experience in your chosen field, develop professional workplace skills, earn academic credits for your degree and build contacts and network with potential employers that can lead to employment upon graduation. It also helps you identify your preferred working style and type of job and/or industry. Co-ops are offered at several leading Canadian universities and are usually available to students across faculties and departments. Co-op programmes are usually structured for work terms to alternate with study terms. Employers often prefer students from a co-op as the student has more comprehensive skills to contribute to the company. On the flip side, co-op programmes take longer to complete and are often more stressful on the student as they have to maintain their academic record to continue in the co-op and have to juggle work and study requirements. The co-op programme can also involve some additional costs – an administrative/processing fee levied by the university and additional costs towards housing, food and travel. These costs are usually more than made up for by the remuneration you receive during the work terms and can even go some way in paying for school-related costs. All said, the benefits far outweigh the negatives and are especially useful for those who are looking to work at least for a few years in Canada upon completion of their undergraduate programme.

_IN CONVERSATION

Demystifying Business Education

Jean Charroin, Dean of Audencia Nantes School of Management, talks to Youth Inc about what an MBA is about and gives some tips on how to apply for one How essential has an MBA degree become in this day and age? An MBA remains the international reference in business education. The effects of globalisation and of different economic crises have reinforced the need for business leaders who can think differently and master all the tools and techniques needed to help companies adapt in a rapidly changing world. Employability is an issue for both companies and students, and MBAs are a globally recognised path towards this. A quality, general management MBA offers this, but it also offers a chance to study in a multicultural context that allows students to understand what it will be like to work with international colleagues, clients and suppliers in their subsequent careers. To make sure they get the best return on investment, potential students should look closely at accreditations (AACSB, Equis, Association of MBAs) and international rankings (The Economist, for example) when choosing a school. Who should study for a business degree? Studying an MBA allows managers to further their careers by adding a whole new dimension to their personal and professional profile. This is often the case with those participants whose past experience is more technical than managerial. In this way, engineers or

pharmacists, for example, can gain the skills and knowledge needed to manage teams and structures. In the case of a general manager who feels a need to consolidate his or her managerial knowledge and so achieve better career evolution, an MBA is also a good solution. With so many pathway options within the MBA itself, how does one choose the course that is right for them? Specialised MBAs open up a whole debate. By definition, an MBA should be a general management qualification that arms the participant for work in any area. A sector-specific MBA does not do this but, like a specialised master’s degree, focuses on a single sector such as luxury goods or aeronautics. The other option is to make an MBA different by keeping the logic of general management but incorporating an overall philosophy that makes the programme stand out while still allowing careers in any sector after graduation. Such an approach allows greater employment possibilities after studies. This is the path taken by the Audencia MBA which is restructured for the 2013 intake along the lines of an MBA in Responsible Management that remains a general management programme but stresses long-term vision, innovation and sustainability in all subject areas.

What kind of students do you look for when sifting through the numerous applications you receive? Motivation is key. We need to see that the candidate has chosen Audencia Nantes for a good reason. Personal philosophy is important as well. The school has a set of values based on respect, responsibility and hard work. If students do not adhere to these core values then a compatibility problem could arise. We educate not just managers who are technically sound but also managers who are ethically sound. Another key consideration is finding the right multicultural mix for a programme. It is in no-one’s interests to travel to study abroad and then to find that the programme intake is 80 per cent Indian. All participants get far more from their experience if a class is balanced in terms of nationalities and gender. Any advice you may have for prospective business students. When applying for an MBA be attentive to company’s needs both for today and tomorrow. Definite sectors are emerging which can provide higher levels of employment and need innovative managers to help their development. This is the case of energy efficiency, logistics or purchasing, for example. The aim is to be a step ahead when choosing an MBA and anticipate what tomorrow’s business world will need from its managers. yi

The Minimal Effect AKSHAR PATHAK IS A PIONEER IN MINIMAL BOLLYWOOD POSTER DESIGN. HE TALKS TO SEAN SEQUEIRA ABOUT HIS INSPIRATION

T

he concept of minimalism doesn’t have a huge following because of the over-the-top style that we are used to seeing. We are constantly drilled with the bigger-is-better ideology, but Akshar Pathak chooses to go against the tide. He started a project called Minimal Bollywood Posters and made posters for popular Bollywood movies by stripping them down to their essential elements. We chatted with him to find out how he

started this project which has caught wind on social networking websites, and how he goes about making these interesting works of art. Why does minimalism appeal to you as an art form? Minimalism is an extension of simplicity. If used as a tool, not only do you manage to extract something from all its complex settings, you also get rid of everything unnecessary that usually comes along. All Bollywood posters are

action-packed with photo-manipulated images. There’s a heroine providing some mystique and sensuality along with the hero looking tough. What I did was add a minimalistic twist to these posters. The procedure begins with stripping the object down to its bare essentials, and then a handful of colours, shapes and positive/negative space convey the basic idea around which the movie was originally made. Nothing but the essential; going against the idea that busier is better.

QUICK Questions FAVOURITE POSTER YOU DESIGNED Hum Paanch

FAVOURITE POSTER YOU DID NOT DESIGN The official movie posters for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. AN ARTIST YOU ADMIRE Banksy How do you go about creating your posters? The movies I pick for my posters are based on the ideas and suggestions I receive from people and what they’re eager to see next. I take the most significant idea, concept, or memory from the movie at first. Every illustration depicted is a visual relation that I shared and experienced while watching that particular movie. Some examples from the posters are just a simple glass of orange juice and a carom

board for Munnabhai MBBS, or an old rustic telephone for Hera Pheri. In my viewpoint, a poster needs a clearly defined purpose to eliminate any confusion from the start by having a single, strong focal point. And for the world to see, it’s fresh, clutter-breaking and ahead of its time. Minimal Bollywood Posters was not created with the intention of a business venture. Minimalism is an art in itself and when my expression of minimalism collected so many likeminded people who could appreciate the same as well as contribute their work, there was no looking back. The posters will continue to be designed with each new suggestion that I can manage to execute with perfection or whatever comes close until I find other genres to espouse it with. To create my posters, I mainly use the Adobe programmes Photoshop and Illustrator. Was there any particular poster you found challenging to design? All of them are challenging in a way. Apart from Minimal Bollywood Posters, are there any other projects you plan to work on? I spent most of last year making Minimal Bollywood Posters. Almost all the movies are done and the page has about 500 posters now. That got a bit boring though. So I started making conceptual posters out of the tweets I read on my Twitter timeline every day. Apart from your art, where else do you practice minimalism? If it counts, I’m quite an introvert in real life. What kind of future do you see if world politics started focusing on minimalism? I don’t see that happening. Ever! If a minimalistic poster was made for your life, what element would it focus on? Just a dark room, with the only source of light being my laptop. yi MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 51

The

perfect

A perfect score in TOEFL, SAT or AP was considered impossible until 15-year-old Shreya Vardhan set the world record score by attaining 100% in all three exams. She talks to Youth Inc about achieving this feat After achieving this commendable feat, how have academic options opened up for you? Although standardised test scores help, they are not the only criteria for evaluation of an application. As for my academic options, I’m still in the process of applying. What preparations did you undertake for these exams (techniques, duration, etc)? I don’t think there’s a lot of preparation required. What I mainly did to prepare was take many practice tests from various books. This helped me get used to the pattern of questioning. It also helped me discover my strengths and weaknesses. How do you make time for extracurricular activities? By setting deadlines, enjoying every activity while I’m engaged in it and trying to get the most out of my time. After completing your higher education, would you prefer to work abroad or in India? I intend to do research; the answer therefore depends on whether I can find the facilities for the area in which I wish to focus on within India itself. But either way, I’d definitely like to eventually help create or improve facilities for research in the fundamental sciences in India and to try and spread an approach of seeking knowledge for its own sake. What are your future plans? I plan to do research and write. Could you give some tips to students who wish to write foreign exams on how they should prepare? When you hate the mirror

I once met a girl who said “I hate my ears. They’re ugly”. Even though the existence of ‘ugly ears’ surprised me, this only proves that every girl suffers from body issues, including Kiera Knightley who feels too skinny, Sarah Jessica Parker who hates her nose and the blonde bombshell Scarlett Johansson who complained her lips being ‘too fat’. It’s evident that access to the best designers, make up brands and even plastic surgeons doesn’t protect you from body issues. So what’s the solution? Well, if A-list celebrities are complaning about their looks, it’s about time us women understand we’re all sailing in the same boat. It’s time to differentiate between real and exaggerated beauty and consciously block out negative thoughts. It really is that simple. Another effective way to deal with body issues is to gain confidence in different aspects of your life. Show off your wit, your voice or your dance routines – whatever makes you walk into a room with confidence makes you more beautiful.

When you are on Red Alert

Three letters that can make any man tremble in fear: PMS. While scientists continue to debate the existence of any Premenstrual Disorder Syndrome, us women refuse to believe PMS is ‘not real’ and use it as an excuse to emotionally blackmail the opposite sex and get away with unreasonable, violent behaviour. Stick to: Fresh fruits, veggies and drink lots of fluids (water and fresh juices). Thyme tea and regular exercise throughout the month are effective in relieving cramps. It is also advised to check with your doctor if you need calcium or vitamin supplements Keep away from: Refined sugar, caffeine, colas, alcohol and excess salts.

“I think when your self-esteem is based on how you look, you’re always going to be insecure. There’s always a fresher face, a thinner girl[...] As women, it’s really important to be focused on things other than what is on the plate in front of you and get on with your life and develop your mind and career and not be so obsessed with how you look and what you weigh.”

- Portia de Rossi, actress

When your parents play party-poopers

This is when most women learn the art of negotiation, something that will only be used more frequently in the years to follow. Here is some advice on getting started: first, pick the right parent. Is mom more lenient with deadlines? Or is dad easier to convince? Pick the more sympathetic party to hear your case. Second, the best way to be treated like an adult, is to behave like one. Instead of whining or sulking, let your parents know you’ll keep away from rash behaviour – sex, drugs and alcohol (that’s all they’re really worried about). Decisions will be in your favour once you prove that you can handle late nights responsibly.

“Women complain about premenstrual syndrome, but I think of it as the only time of the month that I can be myself.”

- Roseanne Barr, actress and comedian

“When I want to stretch my curfew, I re-assure my parents that I will be dropped home by someone who they know and is trustworthy. Recently, I did well in my exams and told me parents I deserved a treat and got an extension on my curfew.”

When someone breaks your heart

When you have to keep a secret

It will hurt. You will talk to your girlfriends till their ears begin to ache, empty boxes of tissue paper in a day and spend hours on his Facebook profile. But before you turn into a walking cloud of gloom, try this: STEP 1: Let it all out – believe it or not, crying helps you relieve emotional stress,

so don’t hold back the waterworks. STEP 2: When you feel upset, the dopamine levels in your body reduce, resulting in a feeling of depression. What’s the best way to increase dopamine levels? Exercise, exercise, exercise! A quick run or a fun zumba session can help ease the pain. STEP 3: You can only heal once you create enough distance between yourself and the guy in question. This means a complete ‘ex-detox’ – no calls, no messages, no emails and no Facebook/Twitter posts! STEP 4: Prepare for the bad days. No matter how well you’re doing, there will be days when you feel lonely (V-day, birthdays, etc). Find distractions for those days in advance and be around friends instead of being alone. STEP 5: Make a new routine. The most difficult part will be coping with the absence of that person in your life. Create things to look forward to – colour your hair purple or go on a short holiday. Or create a Grammywinning album like Adele. STEP 7: Luckily, nothing lasts forever, not even heartache.

5

“It took a break up to get me going. When I’m happy, I don’t have much to write about. The songs on 19 were about my first, teenage love. He cheated on me, so it was a traumatic record. I felt bitter, and that inspired me.”

When you have nothing to wear

We all know that a wardrobe overflowing with clothes, bags and shoes will still have you running around frantically screaming “I have nothing to wear!” One reason is that our shopping bags, and hence our wardrobes, often lack variety. The trick is to keep 3 ensembles ready and tucked aside (do not touch them otherwise): one for a party, another for an interview and a third for a date.

- Adele, singer

It takes about 32 minutes for a woman to reveal a friend’s secret; that’s what the results of a survey conducted by skincare brand Simple revealed. We advise that you keep away from the complicated web of gossip by never hinting that you have a secret to share. Once you let that information slip, you will need to use all possible self-control tactics to escape from the interrogation that follows.

“I normally am an ocean of other people’s secrets and do not usually betray that trust, but if it’s a silly harmless secret and I’m afflicted by a desperate urge to gossip, I would try to distract myself by shopping or eating something so that the moment passes. And if I absolutely can’t hold back I would tell it (without names) to an ABSOLUTE STRANGER! Someone I know I will probably never meet again ever – like an auto rickshaw driver or a random person on a train or a sales girl in a mall. That way it’s out of my system and will not do any harm!”

- Swara Bhaskar, actress

“When in doubt wear black! Get the accessories right. Mixing and matching any outfit with the right jewellery and perfect shoes is the key to achieve a stylish look. Wardrobe must haves: a great pair of blue jeans, crisp white shirt, well fitted black dress and a gorgeous saree! Lastly, confidence! The most important attire a girl needs to carry to look her best!”

When you feel lonely

Even with 500 Facebook friends, there might be times when you have no plans on a Saturday night or when you’re the only single girl in your group of friends. When loneliness attacks, one antidote is to reach out to friends you have lost touch with or form new connections on social networking sites. It might also be wise to try and embrace moments of solitude and stillness. After all, to be at peace with yourself is one of the most enviable qualities one can possess.

8

When you want to flirt

There he is. The smart, handsome, funny guy you thought didn’t exist. But, now what? Do you wait for him to make the first move? Will it seem ‘too forward’ if you approach him? Perhaps it’s time to stop waiting – first you wait for the right guy to turn up, then you wait for him to show interest and then you wait for him to ask you out. If you find someone you fancy, let him know. Luckily, us women don’t need to go down on a knee: a lingering smile or a light touch of his arm will let him know you’re interested. If you think he’s too shy, let him know how you feel, maybe suggest going out to grab a coffee. If you feel it, express it!

“When a woman wants to make a move, the best way is to be natural, don’t place an expectation on an outcome, develop the attitude of an explorer and just start a conversation. I find [that] just breaking the ice is the hardest part and takes the most courage. But nearly anyone would be open to a conversation, right? Then, after talking about and using your instincts, you can gently guide a conversation towards the fact that you may be interested. Remember that all roads lead to something....and something is better than nothing. Better to have tried than to let it slip away!”

BOLLYWOOD HUNGAMA.COM

“For centuries people have been invested in developing technologies – from telephone to Facebook – to keep us connected and yet we find ourselves feeling lonely at times. This is because loneliness is existential. The most seemingly connected people also feel lonely. We suffer more because we try hard to do away with loneliness and completely erase it from our lives. This effort frustrates us. Trying to tolerate and accept loneliness as one small part of our lives can be much healthier.

Like with any relationship, friendships also have moments of ugliness. In such situations, there are only two questions to ask yourself: 1. What’s the real issue? Are you upset that your BFF hasn’t been giving you time because she has a new boyfriend? Are you angry about something she said? Once you spot what’s really bothering you, discuss it with her. 2. When you look back at this fight in the future, will it seem silly and frivolous? If the answer is yes, forgive, forget and move on!

“I have this great test to see if a girl’s a real friend. When we’re shopping I’ll pick out an outfit that I know looks hot and one that is awful. If my friend says the bad one looks good, I know she’s not a good friend.”

When you need a mantra

Disappointment, sadness, agony, envy, anger, frustration – these are common and rather destructive visitors of the human mind. When dealing with such emotions, it is important to have something to turn to – a personal mantra. It could be an activity, a poem, a prayer, a movie, a place of worship or even a song. It helps to have a happiness mantra ready for the gloomy days.

“I believe that everything starts from the mind and the two most important factors that make or break one’s constitution (emotional/physical/ mental/spiritual) are your stomach and your mind. To nuture these, it is vital to have a well balanced diet, exercise, work, socialise, do something creative – it could be anything. Whenever I feel low (mind/body), I exercise for an extra 1/2 hour; retail therapy (making sure I dont cross my budget); I write and at times start sketching anything that comes naturally. I try and distance myself from my negative thoughts by listening to music that inspires me. Do some cooking, gardening or anything that works for you.”

The journey from “I can’t wait for the day when I can finally take my own decisons” to “I wish someone could decide for me” is deceptively quick. The common belief is that girls can never make up their minds – about what to wear, who to date, what career to choose or which movie to watch. If this sounds like you, here’s a little tip: people often shy away from making decisions for fear of losing out on options. Therefore, as a rule, never regret and ponder over choices once they are made. Learn from your decisions, but never dwell on them.

“Analyse the pros and cons of every choice; make an Excel sheet if required! That way there’s no guilt of being impulsive and no guilt of not going with your instinct either.”

When you meet sexist men

- Kalki Koechlin, actress

Girls can be really nasty. All of us have been involved in a ‘mean girls’ moment; sometimes as the villian, mocking a girl for her hideous attire, and at other times being the victim of sniggers and hurtful insults. In either role, these are moments of immense learning in a girl’s life. In time, memories of when we have ganged up against someone teach us to recognise and mend unflattering aspects of our own personalities . The second, being subject to similar teasing, helps in building a strong immunity against meaningless slander. And these are lessons from our growing years that need to be remembered.

“I was a mean girl. I had a gift for coming up with the meanest possible thing to say in any situation [...] My friends and I didn’t really date or go to cool parties, so we made jokes about those who did. Looking back, I can see the mean-girl thing for what it is: a waste of energy. The hardest thing is to free yourself from caring what someone says about you. But it brings big freedom if you do it.” DAVID SHANKBONE

“It’s difficult to fight sexism with physical strength or verbal aggression because so many sexist men have frail egos and steroid induced muscles. Instead, try being funnier and cleverer than them. Turn the tables: If a guy is bugging you with the whole ‘Can I buy you a drink?’ respond with fun but firm answers like ‘No, but if I buy you one will you leave me alone?’ or ‘The opposite of yes is?’ Be repulsive: If a man is whistling, teasing and annoying you, respond with a loud burp or by digging your nose. Golden rule: Never get flustered. Men get excited by an angry woman so stay cool, calm and clever. Joke: How many sexists does it take to change a lightbulb? None. They don’t want to be enlightened. The infamous silent treatment: If you know the guy has no sense, don’t waste your time reasoning with him. Starve him of attention, ignore him.”

When the ‘mean girls’ arrive

Today it’s Asaram Bapu, tomorrow it might be a co-worker, an uncle or even your boyfriend. Men will surprise you and at times offend you with their sexist opinions. Even the celebrated actor Sean Connery was criticised for his chauvantistic views when he told Playboy magazine, “I don’t think there is anything particularly wrong about hitting a woman – although I don’t recommend doing it in the same way that you’d hit a man. An open handed slap is justified – if all other alternatives fail and there has been plenty of warning. If a woman is a bitch, or hysterical, or bloody-minded continually, then I’d do it.” People’s opinions can be unbearably rigid and will require immense patience and reasoning abilities to battle against.

Were Exams Ever

Sleepless nights, nervous pangs and escalating stress levels – Nisha JamVwal reminisces about the symptoms of ‘exam fever’ and offers a rather inspiring cure for this dreaded disease

ere exams “The love of glory, the fear ever fun? Do of disgrace, the incentive I look back to succeed, the desire to nostalgically live in comfort and the at burning the midnight oil instinct to humiliate and working towards D-day? others are often the cause of that courage so Definitely not! I’m still not renowned among men.” amused at the thought of gruelling exams – trying to Francois La gauge if I’ve got the plot or not. I Rochefoucauld

would never want to relive that phase of black coffee and books, and I often ask myself if there are easier ways to gain education – something more hands-on and more enjoyable, perhaps? I sometimes feel I’d have absorbed more knowledge with the absence of the stress quotient that exams impose upon us. But there is no option that schools and universities have devised in place of the necessary evil.

‘entrepreneur’, big or small, and often out of the box. Options are not limited to ‘doctor-engineer-government services’ alone. Today the world is our oyster – starting a chain of hamburger kiosks and making a successful management case study of it. However education is still the best equipment for life, so it’s better to give it your best shot; this is an age of opportunities.

THE TORMENTED SUDENTS

Little tips like study time-tables, study groups, etc make it more interesting and interactive. Field trips and actual situations where your knowledge is applied, meditation to help concentration, physical exercise at regular intervals to ensure better memory and less fatigue, mock tests to be better prepared and so on – these are some tricks and tips I offer to you to score and conquer the world! The funda is to know what you want in life. An education can certainly provide you with a living, but earning a living need not be the driving force for education. One could study to be welleducated, informed, equipped with knowledge and then make a career foray into photography, special effects, film-making, dancing... the options in our age are myriad and kaleidoscopic. It’s a fabulous optimistic age of options, opportunities, entrepreneurship and innovation. Before our eyes we see the world changing with brilliant inventions in nanotechnology, computers, stem cells, etc and if these be the goals and dreams of the young, we’d be so much more excited by the thought of education, knowledge and exams. We’d think of it all as a fabulous journey than a drudge which would send even our parents onto psychologists’ couches during this time. yi

I know some friends who went through exams debonair and cavalier, much to the unease of the competition (and won the gold medals too) but most of us lesser mortals still harbour nightmarish memories of the dreaded exams before, during and even after. The French say “The more things change, the more they remain the same!" Although systems, curricula, the scope of subjects change, as far as exams go, it’s only skimming the surface. Terror times they still are. The crowd heads towards the hallowed portals of institutes and there are impossible cut-off marks for engineering, the IITs, medical colleges, etc. There are whispered immensities of ‘capitation’ fees involved. The uncertainties a future outside – these make it seem to be a do or die thing. But is this what education was meant to be? Indeed life is competitive and we grow up with paranoia and ‘performance stress’ but I’m sure if we looked at the bigger picture we’d be less consumed by fear. The fallout of that would be we’d actually perform better and more creatively in our exams. The bright side is that generation next is confident and adventurous. Even those with professional backgrounds think 62 Youth Incorporated ║ MARCH 2013

two-minute vivid skin show in a video clip on the Internet is all that a guy needs to release his pent-up urges. A girl, on the other hand, is more likely to be disgusted, not satisfied, by this. The girl, however, will resort to romance and erotica novels where the exact two-minute skin show is depicted, albeit with words. What makes a guy favour porn and a girl romance stories? SIMPLE VS. COMPLICATED Sex, for guys, is simple and unfussy. It’s a no-strings-attached act and a porn clip reflects just this notion. For girls, sex is largely an emotional act, which means it is complicated and meaningful. They don’t want to have sex just for the sake of having sex, but want to cultivate a relationship with

Guys have never denied that porn is their guilty pleasure while girls have always been drawn to a more boring avenue – erotica and romance novels. Aparna Sundaresan attempts to explain why a person before getting personal with them. In that sense, guys are an on-off switch; girls are a circuit board. Girls, therefore, immensely enjoy romance novels because these books have explicit story lines and characters that girls get to know intimately between the first and last pages. Thus, when the hero of the story has sex, no matter how dirty or graphic it is, girls enjoy it because they have become emotionally interested in him by then.

I WANNA HAVE YOUR BABY! Guys might think of sex as whambam-thank-you-ma’am, but girls ask a multitude of questions before indulging in the act. Is he committed? Is he gentle and kind? Will he stick around? Is he rough? The reason for so much concern is that the female brain is developed to unconsciously examine everything that relates to the girl’s social, emotional and physical well-being. This is probably a result of evolution – women’s bodies are equipped to procreate, so before engaging

FAVOURITES FROM THE EROTICA BOOKSHELF

in the act that leads to reproduction, girls want someone who will stay and provide the necessary resources for raising a child. Erotica plays on this psychology. The hero of the story is typically well-built, strong, handsome, generous, kind, loyal and understanding – the ideal man to have a baby with. WHO’S DRIVING MY SEX DRIVE? A woman’s sex drive is usually lower than a man’s, not for biological or physical reasons but for reasons which are essentially fairytales with a generous serving of sex. IN THE END, EVERYTHING IS DISTORTED We blame porn for giving men astronomical and illogical relating to repression. In this patriarchal world, women have historically been repressed from both self-expression and sexual expression through objectification in the media and lack of equal rights in society. Porn reiterates the objectification with women in pornography serving as sex objects. Girls reject this representation which explains why they usually don’t like porn. And because their sex drive is lower, girls must be coaxed and convinced to emotionally connect with someone before having sex. The plots in romance novels are fundamentally exercises in convincing the heroine to fall in love and have sex. DISNEY AND MY UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Girls are raised on a diet of Disney movies where a prince rescues a damsel in distress and lives with her happily ever after in Fairytale Land. Girls thus grow up believing in one true love, the concept of soulmates and that there is a prince charming somewhere in their lives, waiting to sweep them off their feet. Since reality is anything but that, girls escape to their imagination and find solace in romantic stories

expectations from women, but we need to flip the coin and examine the other side. Romantic and erotic literature places just as much unrealistic and skewed expectations on men. Stereotypes are created in both instances; guys want Barbie dolls and girls want Ken dolls. And these stereotypes have become so rooted in their origins that if the actions were reversed, it is a matter of shame and embarrassment for a guy to be caught reading a romance novel and for a girl to be watching porn. yi

• Mills & Boon: The quintessential escapist romance novel publishing company that has comforted and excited women since the 1930s. Although it has been criticised for selling formulaic and unintelligent books, its sales figures have rarely dipped. • Fifty Shades of Grey: Love it or hate it, this Twilightinspired fan fiction has become the urban woman’s go-to for sexual release. Even though the writing is not Booker-worthy and the nature of the sex described is violent, it is a hit. • Nicholas Sparks: His books aren’t outright sexy, but are rather mushy love stories with a smattering of sex that have spawned not one, not two, but seven film adaptations, including the international hit ‘The Notebook’. His stories are permutations of characters that are estranged, that are of different social class and that have fatal diseases. Emotional porn, if you will. MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 65

I really don’t understand their ideology: “I have an expensive phone, which was made by this hipster dude who died. It’s really expensive, so it must be better than that Samsung crap you’re using. Now excuse me while I take a shower with Dettol. I was touched by a Nokia user a couple of hours ago”.

Also, you can’t win an argument with an Apple fanatic. No matter how statistically proven your facts about the latest Android being superior, their response is invariably "You’re just jealous you don’t have an iPhone” or “You’re just poor, dude” or the more articulate “Sty Hngry Sty Fulish broski. Self-Defence Essentials

_FITNESS

Learning the art of self-defence is imperative in today’s world. Dr Komal VS, Director of Academy of Combat Fitness, demonstrates how some lethal moves can help you escape from any attacker

1

TO WATCH A VIDEO GUIDE ON SELF-DEFENCE, USE THE QR SCANNER ON YOUR PHONE

Front Snap Kick Lift your leg with your knee bent. Then straighten your leg and kick the attacker with the ball of your foot (like a football) in the groin. Pull your leg back

2

JKD Lead Jab Make sure your fist is in the vertical position. Then, hit the attacker with the last 3 knuckles (and an additional 2 finger space next to it. Just using your knuckles will injure you). Hit the chin of the attacker to jolt it upwards. Your shoulder should move forward during the attack.

Lead Elbow to the Face Hit the attacker with your elbow and the hard, pointed portion of your forearm. You can hit the attacker on any point of his face repeatedly in sets of two for maximum damage. The elbow is a strong weapon and is capable of splitting the person’s skin.

Knee Attack

6

Wrist Lock

Hold the attacker by the collar and hand so that he doesn’t move out of range. Bend you leg and kick the attacker in the groin with your knee in a forward and upward motion. Pull back after the attack; hit in sets of two for maximum damage.

Eye Jab/ Biljee This is a dangerous technique. It involves an open handed strike with your fingers stiff and approximated together. Pierce the attacker’s eyes repeatedly to gouge the eye out.

Break the attacker’s wrist joint by bending it forward and twisting it to the outside. Throw your attacker on the ground by putting your knee behind his. Sweep his leg and push his nose in two different directions at a 45 degree angle. He will fall back on his head or will break his fall by landing on his wrist/elbow; both will result in injury. yi MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 71

EXFOLIATION BENEFITS AND TECHNIQUES Exfoliation refers to the removal of dead surface skin cells to reveal

D

smoother and softer skin. One of the most common methods involves a mechanical process in which the skin is scrubbed manually with various available scrub products to remove dull surface layers on the face and body. This method can be safely done at home. Another method of exfoliation is called chemical exfoliation because it involves the use of beta or alpha hydroxy acids including salicylic, citric, lactic and glycolic acids. These acids break down the bonds between dead surface skin cells making it easier for them to peel off and thereby reveal smoother, more refined skin. It is done under the supervision of a dermatologist. A variety of electrical modalities are also available and are used by skin clinics to assist in exfoliation, such as Microdermabrasion and Ultrasonic machines. They usually help in better penetration or absorption of products during treatments. Regular skin exfoliation is an important step in skin care. Without exfoliation, debris, sebum, impactions and excess cell build-up occur, all of which clog the pores and dead cells’ build-up doesn’t reflect the light well giving the skin a dull look. Exfoliation helps remove dull surface layers of the skin which allows even reflection of light, revealing fresh and radiant skin. The benefits of exfoliation include fresher, brighter looking skin, better penetration of active ingredients of skin care products and, for oily skin, a varying degree of reduction in oil secretion. As a result, skin looks healthier, smoother and softer. Regular exfoliation keeps the skin healthy by encouraging skin regeneration and the growth of new skin cells, which leaves it acne-free and beautiful. It is recommended that skin be exfoliated about twice a week. It is also important to know how much is enough and whether your skin can tolerate it well, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin because exfoliating too often or using products that are too harsh can result in skin that is overly dry and damaged by stripping away the body’s essential oils. It should always be followed up with a soothing moisturiser.

GAMEPLAY: A game of rip-and-slash, supernatural control and what may as well be a conscious world in Limbo city. Players become the young Dante action-hero, welcomed after being hesitatingly approved of a redesigned version of his former self. Rebellion (his sword) and Ebony and Ivory (his pistols), come with modifiers Angel Mode (Scythe) and Devil Mode (Arbiter). As before, Dante accumulates diverse souls, redeems health, makes purchases and expands his might. PLOT: In Limbo, demons inhabit a parallel plane and control the city. Dante, lured into Limbo, hunts down the ‘hunter’, and heads back to the human dimension, only to be recalled by Kat (a Psychic) to meet her superior (Vergil), a group targeting the demons, revealing their truth. Dante, unconvinced, gets justification from Vergil, hears their brothers and that their parents Sparda (Devil) and Eva (Angel) and their mansion were under attacked by the Demons. Dante is told that his parents were forbidden a union, defiantly came together and thus Eva was killed. Sparda wiped out the memory of the children, running them to safety. Dante tracks Mundus’ (enemy) maneuvers and annihilates the controlling demons, acquiring powers along the way. In the end, Vergil, with intent to rule humanity and a heartless mind-set towards Kat has to be fought, too. Dante overpowers him and comes to terms with ‘who he is’ and ‘what he is’, finally beholding the devastated battleground.

MEAN GIRLS

SRIDHAR/THAYIL – STD

WATCH

Mean Girls redefined high school films in Hollywood. Written by comedienne Tina Fey of 30 Rock fame, it follows the triumph and decline of Cady Heron, a new high school student who inadvertantly becomes friends with the meanest and most loathed (but most awed) group of girls in school called The Plastics. She intends to be a spy and spill their secrets, but things go awry when she is caught in the crossfire and exposed.

We’re a little late with this review, but it doesn’t matter; this music is going to be relevent for a long time. You would be hardpressed to find an artist in the Indian independent music scene who draws music from a variety of genres more than duo Sridhar/Thayil. Suman Sridhar, the Indian-classical trained vocalist, switches effortlessly from harmonising aalaaps to crooning the blues to belting out jazz vocalisations. Jeet Thayil, noted poet and author, mans the guitars, and his influence is evident in the lyrics – “Gotta music hit an E, and a couple lines of krunk/Got three petis and a bellyful of spunk” in This Be The Beat makes for delightful wordplay. Other highlights are Here In The Morning, Punk Bhajan and City of Sisters. That said, STD is not an easylistening album. You have to sit down and let it percolate you.

Persuasion is yet another of Jane Austen’s woman-centric novels. Anne, the heroine, is 27-yearsold and unmarried because in her past, the man she was in love with had to be turned away because he was poor and from an average family. She bumps into him now and finds that he is rich, successful and is looking for a wife – any woman who is not Anne. How Anne deals with this while battling family prejudices forms the plot.

QUICK FIRE INTERVIEW WITH ZAC O’YEAH Zac O’Yeah’s Mr Majestic: The Tout of Bengaluru, though sold as crime fiction, is really a rib-tickling detective story that seems more like a parody of typical crime fiction. If you’ve wondered what the underbelly of Bangalore’s crime scene is like, or whether Bangalore has a crime scene at all, this book is for you. The protagonist is Hari Majestic, a small-time tout in Bangalore who is both superstitious and concerned for his karma, as well as intent on earning a living from fleecing people. He is hired to locate a free-spirited and wannabe film star, Madhuri, who fell for one of Hari’s schemes previously and disappeared in Bangalore. Hari turns hero as he accosts a variety of seedier and more dangerous criminals in his search for Madhuri. Mr Majestic is a delightful read and O’Yeah’s writing is fluid, funny and engaging without being pulpy or unnecessarily sensational. You seem to have a lot of insider information on the ways a tout goes about his business. First-hand experience or just plain, good research? As a frequent traveller I inevitably meet more than my fair share of touts, and also small-time conmen and other people who try to make a quick buck on travellers, so one begins to think about their existence. They’re an integral part of the tourist experience and sometimes they can be quite useful, as in, if you come to a city and the hotels are full, a tout will know where there are vacant rooms. But this is a novel and Mr Majestic is a completely fictional character; if there happens to be somebody like him in real life I hope that person will mend his ways or bad things may happen! If Mr Majestic was made into a film and you were given the casting job, who would you cast? This is a really hard question, but I think Hari Majestic himself should be played by a newcomer or a relatively young actor. My favourite actors in Kannada cinema are Upendra and Darshan, both of them have done some great action-packed movies, and it’d be lovely to have people like them doing the major parts. I also admire Vijay Raaz, he has great looks and is good at playing very complex characters. I’ve already spoken to Arfi Lamba, who played a role in Slumdog Millionaire, and when I mentioned this book he was interested in acting in a Mr Majestic movie. As for the female parts I don’t really know… I like Urmila Matondkar, she’s a brilliant actress and has played some fantastic roles, maybe she could be the lady police inspector?

You write in both Swedish and English; do you have more proclivity for one language? More and more I feel I am beginning to transform into an Indian writer writing in English, and when I meet foreign writers, I sometimes find them a bit difficult to relate to. My wife is an Indian writer, Anjum Hasan, and I think she has influenced me a lot in this. One of the reasons I started writing in English was because I wanted her to be able to read my stuff. IDENTITY THIEF

Starring: Jason Bateman, Melissa

McCarthy, John Cho, Amanda Peet Bateman plays Sandy Patterson, a financial bureaucrat whose identity is stolen by a woman named Diana (McCarthy). Patterson drives across the country to catch Diana, but is accosted on the way by several crooks who want revenge for the schemes that Diana has pulled on them. We’re eager to watch this for the laughts.

HIMMATWALA

Starring: Ajay Devgn, Tamannaah, Paresh Rawal A typical Bollywood potboiler with a terrorising dacoit, a wronged widow, a prodigal son sworn on exacting revenge and the dacoit’s daughter who falls for the hero. It’s a remake of the 1983 Himmatwala and we hope this action comedy is an improvement on the cheesy original. MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 83

PLACES AND EVENTS FOR THE MONTH

THE BIG BANG BAR & CAFÉ, MUMBAI

The Big Bang Bar and Café is a three-section eatery which doubles up as a restaurant and a relaxed hangout joint at different times of the day. Two of the three sections are open air with dim lighting, while the third is an air conditioned casual dining space with their trademark long bar. Loud alternative rock music is the staple here. CUISINE: Italian, Indian, Continental, Mexican FOOD AND DRINKS: The bartender is sure to give you some good advice on their signature drinks and may even whip up a special drink on request. Their dishes are mostly bite-sized finger food which goes well with a drink in hand. The thin crust pizzas are great and the Chocolate Avalanche dessert is phenomenal. OVERALL IMPRESSION: During the Happy Hours time of 6 pm to 11 pm on weekdays, this place is affordable and makes for a great hangout spot. 3rd Floor, Kenilworth Building, Linking Road, Bandra (W), Mumbai - Anuj Tripathi

A cosy fine dining experience, perfect for a romantic evening. CUISINE: Asian FOOD AND DRINKS: The Red Chicken Pattaya is a good option to start your meal with. The hint of lemon grass adds a refreshing, tangy flavour to the dish. For vegetarians, the Agedashi Tofu is a necessity. Soft and moist, this meltin-your mouth dish is sure to impress. The Burmese Khao Suey is Nom Nom’s most prized dish. Fresh noodles in a bowl with a rich, coconut-based curry served separately, this one’s a winner for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. The one disappointment on the menu is the Thai Iced Tea. Try it only if you can handle a really potent dose of cardamom. OVERALL IMPRESSION: A place for good quality Asian food. If you’re looking to save some bucks, skip the dessert and drinks and experiment with the starters instead. 3 Shubham Housing Society, Juhu Versova Link Road, Mumbai - Roy Joshi

THE PINK ROOM, NEW DELHI

Aptly named The Pink Room, this café and lounge has pink interiors. If you’re not too fond of the color pink, you can opt for the beautiful terrace space on the top floor. CUISINE: You’ll find just about everything here: Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, Italian and Spanish FOOD AND DRINKS: The Pink Room offers a variety of food starting from all-day breakfast options to Asian, Indian and Italian meals for later in the day. We started our meal with The Pink Room crisps and dips which are passable. The Seafood Risotto with Saffron is well prepared and shouldn’t be missed. You could also choose a thin crust Margherita Pizza or the Mushroom, Green Peas and Broccoli Penne in Pink Sauce, both of which were delectable. To drink, they serve exciting options of shakes, smoothies and mocktails. OVERALL IMPRESSION: The place is great to catch up with friends and the terrace would be an ideal option to soak some sun. 29 A, 2nd floor, Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi -Ashok Shekar

Rising Tell us about yourself I am a pretty chilled out person. I love to eat and eat to live. As a child I never thought I would model as I was very fat. But I would always feel that good looking people have an easy life, hence I wanted to be a part of that category. I started modelling when I was in college and now the journey continues.

STAR

Lasini is a model who has appeared in ads and has walked the ramp at Lakme Fashion Week. Now awaiting the release of her debut film in Tamil (Moondru Per Moondru Kaadhal) in which she has a costarring role, Lasini talks to us about her journey

What does Lasini mean? It'’s a name of a goddess.

Your impression of modelling after your first stint My first stint as such was when I joined the 'I Am She' pageant. I had no clue what to do and what not to do. But I slowly started to take in as much as I could within the training time that I spent with the team there.

Wearing a bikini for the first time – what were the thoughts racing in your head? I was very nervous. I didn’t think I could pull it off. But once I got on that stage it kind of felt freeing in a strange way. It sure makes one shed a lot of their inhibitions.

Landing a movie role is like…

Biggest challenge in moving from modelling to acting

It still feels like a dream. The director and his team are wonderful and have supported me immensely.

I look forward to things that challenge me so I guess I am still discovering what those challenges are.

Ideal movie role It’s funny when I say this…...but I want to be able to do a female Dabangg someday. I loved what Salman did.

A movie you wish you had a part in 3 Idiots. I loved each and every second of that movie. So inspiring yet so entertaining.

Do you have plans to foray into Bollywood as well? If the opportunity knocks I would want to answer it.

Your dream date

Along the beach by the sunset with my loved one.

What are you like when the makeup is erased and the strobe lights are switched off? Well, except when I am working I am sans makeup and in my sweat pants, most of the time. I like spending time watching movies, finding new places to eat and chilling with my friends.

The biggest myth about the glamour industry that isn’t true That it’s easy. It’s all fun and games, and looking pretty is all that matters. One has to be focused and determined. There are too many deterrents and distractions. I always believe that if it were that easy none of us would want it that bad. So work hard and give it your all.

Lasini in 5 years will be… Hopefully happy doing what she loves best! MARCH 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 87

THINGS NOT TO SAY TO A WOMAN Honestly, when it comes down to it, you should just keep your trap shut. Women will ask you cleverly concealed questions, designed for your downfall. When you sense a question like this, don’t say anything. Don’t do it. Just don’t. However, you’re a slick little schmuck and you just have to say something, so, for your own safety, keep these in mind.

“I DON’T FEEL LIKE GOING OUT TONIGHT.”

“Yes, that dress YOU WILL BE TREATED TO DOOR SLAMMING does make you AND THE OCCASIONAL STILETTO AIMED AT YOUR HEAD. look fat, just a little. Have something else?” You will know what it feels like when a tornado hits home. “No, I don’t have any plans tomorrow night.” You’ll find yourself swamped by her extended family.

“YOUR GREAT AUNTIE ENID, HER HANDS TEND TO WANDER, DON’T THEY?” YOU WILL BE ATTACKED WITH LEFTOVER MASHED POTATOES.

“I DON’T WANT TO MEET YOUR MOTHER.” SHE WILL MAKE YOU CRY.

“I don’t like the redecoration.” She might just strip everything bare and leave you out in the cold to fend for yourself.
