online can easily overwhelm the average student and derail his/her plans of picking the best career option. This is where the experience of someone who has personally been through such a system plays a strong role in guiding the prospective students to streamline their applications. This has been the motivation behind the inception of iGrad Global as an admission consulting firm.
Biruda Virkud, Founder of iGrad Global, shares her views on international admissions www.igradglobal.in
A
patient listener works as a salve for a distracted mind, as does a good education counsellor for study abroad aspirants. Biruda Virkud, founder of iGrad Global, is one such miracle healer. With nearly 15 years of experience in the field of overseas education counselling, she has helped place more than 3000 students at over 125 top notch schools all over the world. Just in the last couple of years, her students have garnered over $400,000 in scholarships. We asked Biruda to share her experiences with Youth Incorporated readers. You have worked in the field of higher education for several years. What made you set up iGrad Global? During my previous experience working in the education sector, I became aware of the lack of processes and systems that gave students flexibility in choosing the best courses and universities for them. The glut of information available
How does iGrad Global help the students pick the right universities to apply to? All of our admits are based on the merit/profile of the students. We provide individual attention to each of our students to understand their background and areas of interest, suggest appropriate courses for them and then apply to universities offering those courses. For younger students who want to pursue their undergraduate degrees abroad but might be undecided on their majors, we even offer them access to tools as early as the 11th grade to help them introspect and take an informed decision on courses and their future careers. How do students get serviced by iGrad Global? We have a full time staff of highly qualified professionals who are passionate about education and contribute with various phases of the counselling program. As a graduate of Texas A&M University myself, I am able to set the students’ expectation levels based on my firsthand experience with advanced degree programs abroad. Students also get to interact with a global network of former iGradians who are currently pursuing higher studies abroad or have already graduated. These former students
Biruda is a schedule-works-best person, and helped me to complete the application processes in time thanks to her impeccable commitment in sticking to the schedule. Thanks to her I managed to go from donno-what-to-do to I-got-5-out-of-5admits. -Karthik A. MIS, Univ. of Cincinnati Thanks for all your guidance and support and help with my visa. Also for helping me achieve my goal, I can’t thank the whole iGrad Global team enough for supporting me in each and every step. iGrad Global was my first choice and you guys proved that I took the right decision of going with iGrad Global. iGrad Global is great because Everything is online Flexibility Team is supportive, friendly Motivating students Prompt replies to all queries Most important is their dedication towards making students 100% ready. It’s been a wonderful journey for me with iGrad Global, I would like to contribute to iGrad Global in anyway I can. -Karthik A.S. Interactive Design Univ of Philadelphia
contribute in various aspects of iGrad Global - from mentoring the aspirants one-on-one, to building a large referral network to even helping with business development among peers. It helps that all of our operations are performed online. We have pioneered an effective communication system by executing the process over the internet through tools like Skype, Whatsapp and web-based archiving systems. We also continuously invest in new technology tools to make the processes more and more efficient. What sets you apart from competitors in global admission consulting? Our biggest strength lies in empathising with the student. We are aware that someone’s career is at stake and strive to balance a difficult decision-making process with adequate mentoring. We believe in fair play among our students and do not use this as a means to financial gains. Finally, we aim to be more than mentors to groom the student’s overall development since we work closely with them for a long while. Success for us is when we are able to touch the lives of so many youngsters who choose to continue to stay connected with iGrad Global through faith, trust, confidence and mutual collaboration thus, generating great good will and word of mouth. What sets you apart from competitors in global admission consulting? They need to objectively peruse the information and not believe in hearsay. Rely on authentic information and try not get carried away with gimmicky terms like ‘100% admits’ and ‘assured admits’ to avoid getting deported from a foreign country or be with enrolled with a fake university.
I wish I could meet you guys so that I can touch your feet - Sashtang Namaskar -Kunal Wagh Business Analytics, Univ. of Minnesotta

“Eat an apple on going to bed, and you will keep the doctor from earning his bread.”
his was the original English proverb, circa 1800 in Wales, which is today more popular as ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. This may have stood true back then, but today our lives are far from it. The lifestyles we lead and the food we eat are all nothing but indicators of modern day diseases on the rise. If you look around pretty much every family has a member suffering from one of the top 10 diseases, chronic or severe. We cannot imagine a life without our modern day guardians of health- doctors. It is needless to say that healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries with a larger ageing population and the demand for a longer, healthier life. Medicine and doctors have kept up with the current trends like pediatricians having WhatsApp groups for first time mothers so their common concerns and care can be dealt with or apps that have doctors on demand for any help you need. It is indeed an exciting time to be a doctor with all that modern science has to offer to make our lives better as patients. In our cover story we meet the top five doctors in their respective fields and help you chart a career in the field of medicine. So read all about our Guardians of Health (page 30) Ever since Masterchef made gourmet food a part of our lives, taking up a course at a culinary school seemed like the inevitable career choice. To help you decide where to study, we drew up a list of the top culinary schools in our Cook Up A Culinary Career (pg22) story. The big question after graduating, is always how to land a job for any student, especially abroad. Experts from various universities in the US share their insights and tips in our story How To Land A Job Made Easy (pg20). Over the years, we noticed a lot of international festivals kicking off in India in a big way and festivals like Holi being celebrated abroad. We explored this in International Festivals Go Local (pg50)

BYJU'S REVOLUTIONIZES LEARNING FROM HOME
Byju Raveendran’s Bangalore-based e-learning app called Byju’s has revolutionized the Learnfrom-Home concept. Students have the freedom to decide what and how they want to learn, understand concepts better using digital aids, analyse their strengths and weaknesses, and have conversations with their teachers. Personality Development:
The key to acing an interview Education is a continuous process which aims to prepare a person to play his role as an enlightened member of the society. In other words, it means all round development of the personality of a person, writes Alka Gupta, Managing Director, British Academy for English Learning
P
ersonality as a whole is the sum total of traits a human is entitled to have- both inner and outer. It is the sole entity, that is unique in every person. It constitutes of body language, intuitive intellect, confidence- all the focal points that serve as a differentiator between individuals. This use of personality is instrumental 14 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
to success in life. The inner traits are that which we have inculcated as we go through various stages of life. Things such as confidence, intuitive development are what form the base of our personality. To add a different dimension to the inner core, we need an external reinforce, that comes out through our
appearance, body language, diction. Together, both form an indestructible team for a personality worth recognition. Our personalities are also influenced by the overall development of the thinking, perception, attitude, nature, mood, behaviour and activities that work on an individualistic nature. self-recognition and instil confidence to face the outside world. We, as humans, have various roles to play in various avenues of life. We wear masks, a different one at our workplace, a different one with friends and a completely different one at home. While interchanging between all these facades in a systematic manner, we forget our innerself and feel disillusioned in the process. This causes us to be the key to a constant rise in depression and suicidal tendencies. Personality development programmes help us find our inner-self and to maintain that fragile sanity that we are running short of. In this era of over sharing and in constant connectivity with the outside world, we take inner peace for granted, which these programs help channel back. In the tryst of polishing technical skills, soft skills get skewed. To achieve success in life, one needs to balance the technical with the cognitive side. Yet, in this competitive era with multiple people vying up for the same job, it becomes difficult to distinguish oneself from the
How can I use soft skills to land a job? A candidate's resume may give interviewers an overview of his/ her background and skills, but the selection is largely based on interpersonal skills to get acute insight on the candidates thought process. While qualifications are important, the ability to adjust to company culture is crucial. A well-adjusted candidate is a sign of optimal productivity. The best way to assess this is to get a sense of personality. Thus, the more personable the candidate is, the better is his/her chances of being selected for the job Body language sells Body language is the first thing that can set the base in an interviewer’s mind. The way candidates carry themselves off is a dead giveaway on how seriously they take life. The candidate should be able to provide answers which he/she believes in and goes in accordance with his thought process. Too slouchy an appearance

can signify lack of semblance while too terse may be a sign for rigidity. Etiquette matters a lot. They are an insight into how the candidate is, as a person, and how he/she treats fellow humans. Misnomer or any ulterior thoughts in mind can be detected easily through body language and etiquette, creating mistrust in the mind of the interviewer and may cost the candidate to lose out. Connections count The other key is to connect with interviewer, for which again, you need interpersonal skills. Personality development increases your intuitive skills, helping you gauge the right thing to say at the right time. The candidate's physical appearance apart from the ability to handle him/her during the interview will create a persona in the interviewer’s mind and be the focal factor in the decisionmaking process. It is important to realize that the essence of personality development lies in its ability to sharpen skills dealing with interactionboth verbal and physical. Hence, highlighting the the importance of interpersonal interactions, so much so that leading organizations spend a considerable amount of their team development budget on interpersonal skill development classes. It is a gateway to renown organisations, helping candidates get an added leverage to their already developed skillset. The added benefit of boosted confidence will always be an asset to add to one’s kitty. Taking all of the above into consideration, personality can be found instrumental in helping us achieve success. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 15

Press freedom Is it really free?
Scott Howard Phillips rightly said,“You can't pick and choose which types of freedom you want to defend. You must defend all of it or be against all of it." Siddhartha Mukherjee delves deeper into this, questioning whether we have the right to circulate opinions in print without censorship by the government

I
t is from here, one can easily claim, that if we are such a great democracy, the largest in terms of sheer demographics, then we must surely have full freedom of expression and a free press, as media after all is often considered as the fourth estate, the ultimate ombudsman for any working democracy. Now if we are patient enough to take time out from our incessant Twitter battles, and check out our constitution, then we would even find freedom a separate chapter on fundamental rights, which in great clarity, elucidates the various rights that we, as citizens of India enjoy, including the right to full freedom of expression, and freedom of press, and implicitly we will all breathe a sigh of relief after reading this, for press freedom is one of the guaranteed implicit consequences of the vast right to speak whatever, that we all enjoy. So we all should go to sleep right, listening to good ol’ Bob Marley, thinking about the carefree days of the revolution right? In my honest opinion, if you do that then you are indulging in an act of supreme criminality, with grave consequences for the future prosperity and stability of our country, much graver than speeches at university canteens, proclaiming the ideas of utopia, utopias that we don’t and probably will never have. Yes, in theory we do have freedom of press, as interpreted from the stated notion in Article 19, but we also have a slight corrigendum to that, a sort of a sore that clearly states that reasonable restrictions can be imposed in the name of a number of really vague things , like morality public order and others. Now the word to watch out for here, the term that should have bagged all the Oscars if there ever was one for banal missinterpretation, is the one and only “reasonable “ or “reasonableness “ as our courts so often like to elicit out, often at the drop of the smallest hat. Now reasonableness is a loaded term, more explosive than the Tsar Bombas of the destructive realm, an executioner’s knife always ready to guillotine
any act of expression, at a moment’s notice. And press is the most sophisticated form of expression ever created, especially dangerous as it tends to scrutinize the actions of our elected “lords” and lordships”. So press in our country, at the least have to always watch out for the quite crafty fangs of this rather mundane notion. And then there are the remnants’ of the good old “British” Raj, the quite inocous Press and Telegraph Acts, passed by almost every state worth mentioning in our country. They may look like harmless plants but they do sting and give the executive authorities in our “incredible nation” lots of authority to hound down and harass media. To get a better feel of the poisons that these great pieces of legislation carry, one needs to look no further than the great states of the South, Tamil Nadu, especially which is quite famous for such things. Coming out from the rather boring world of the laws, and looking at the dusty reality of things, sweaty and angry, untamed by the AC realms of “make in India”, one would easily notice the rather quick erosion of the values of press freedom, both in mainstream and alternate media, in any language you take. Of course, press has become much more democratic and open, with the rapid spurt in new media and citizen journalism. But the nature of things is becoming increasingly diluted, murky at best, nonsense at the least. Rapes won’t stop with candlelight marches, corruption won’t be checked through 14 days sit-ins, and their “live” coverage. But press and media, instead of utilizing the transparency and reach of the new tools of communication, have rather turned it into lame chambers, full of useless “exclusives” and constant “breaking news” only to be inter-spaced by really bigoted chants of instantaneous justice. All this is leading to a rather alarming downfall in the quality of content, when it comes to press, with more and more of the common masses feeling a rather painful disconnect from it. When that happens,
then the ground becomes fertile for intolerant perceptions to breed with scorching intensity, and rise to power, through “snake-charming tactics“ of the highest order, before sounding the ultimate death knell of press freedom. Combine this with the increasing tendencies of media concentration and monopolization within the press space, by entrenched interests and one sees, the onset of a disturbing tendency where media loses its position within the annals of a free liberal society. When that occurs, all hell breaks lose, with the very principles of democracy laid bare, naked to be assaulted with impunity by those who want to. And our nation, has no dearth of such radical elements. Yes, some restrictions on press are a must, and some eye for profit is also good, as it creates sustainable models for our media to flourish in an rather competitive world, but the way press and its freedom is becoming increasingly a topic of harmless comedy, bodes bad tidings for the state of our democracy. Investment is required everywhere, but the role of the press can’t be diluted to an extent, when it becomes nothing but a multiple choice commodity, to be purchased for desire. For as I stated before, it is the press that watches over democracy, a plasticine press would lead to a platicine country too, quite weak and breakable, insignificant in the long run in the grander scheme of things.Yes, we don’t have a free press right now, it’s open maybe but quite flawed, just like our much “lauded democracy.” yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 17

Inspite of having a physical deformity called as Spina Bifida and clubbed feet, this young lad’s hardwork and dedication paid off which resulted him in clinching 3 gold medals in 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, 2 silver medals in 100m fly and 50m freestyle and many more. We speak to the power swimmer about his love for swimming, setbacks and a lot more… Despite suffering from a medical condition, how did go about becoming a swimming champion? I took up swimming as a part of aqua therapy which my doctors insisted on. Once I was enrolled, I took to the water like a fish and enjoyed swimming. Where kids took 1 month to learn how to swim, I learnt it in 15 days. Every time the instructor threw me into the shallow end of the pool, I used to swim my way to the deep end. Describe your setback and major achievements I have had few setbacks in my swimming career and one of it I would say is missing the Commonwealth Games 2014 due to an injury. My major achievements are: • Winning 10 medals in every event taken part at the IWAS World Junior Games in 2015 and getting the Junior World Champion crown. • Winning a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2014 • Becoming the first Indian para swimmer to win eight medals at the IWAS World Games 2016, Prague, Czezh republic from the 29th June till 4th July. • Receiving the National Award and being recognised as the best sportsman with disability of India in year 2015. You created record by winning 10 medals last year in the World Games and eight medals this year. How do you feel being recognised as a narional player? It’s always an amazing feeling to represent your
country at the highest level of your sport and bringing laurels to your nation. There are few people who have worked behind me for my success : My parents, my coaches Miguel Lopez (My overseas coach) and John Christopher (Indian coach), GoSports foundation (NGO) who have been supporting me in my journey by providing access to nutrition, fitness experts apart from financial support, my friends and well-wishers without whom I wouldn’t have been what I am today. What do you do to achieve your goals? I love what I do and I do what I love (swimming), I have given my life into it. I feel I’m my own competitor and I always try to improve every single day. What are your practice sessions like? Morning session (swimming) 5:15am till 8:30am Afternoon (gym and conditioning) 2pm till 3:45pm Evening session - 4:45pm till 8pm Your future plans in the field? I am currently targeting on the world championships and Asian games coming up and then my ultimate goal is to represent Indian in Tokyo Paralympics 2020. You are a great inspiration for the youth. how to land a job made easy Experts from the field of admissions across different universities in America help break down how to land a job abroad post graduation
S
tudying abroad isn’t hard to do. It’s landing a job there that is. With rising concerns over legal expenses, language and cultural barriers, uncertainty from employers, students are often left in a dilemma with regards to securing a steady job post graduation. Returning to India too isn’t often an option due to disparities in payscale and lack of options best suited for to match a foreign degree. After observing the plight of such students, a few universities in the United States, have put systems in place to ensure their rising number of international students are well-placed post their graduation. At the recently concluded International Career and College Counselling (IC3) Conference held in Mumbai, Youth Incorporated caught up with 20 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
universities that are helping international students the opportunity to broaden their professional networks and engage in a number of activities that can diversify their resumes. Explaining the visa process, Charlie Schwartz of the University of Cincinnati says that once a student has obtained the required F-1 visa, Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) can be taken up to facilitate the process of later securing a H-1B visa. This paves the way for permanent residency and later citizenship. Charlie also goes on to add, that universities, especially the University of Cincinnati are willing to do much work with hiring companies in order to help international students locate successful employment after graduation. They organize several
career fairs every year which bring in prospective employers, including a unique fair exclusively for international students. “This international student career fair is helpful because we are focused on connecting employers who are comfortable with the sponsoring process to students who need sponsorship” he stated. The University of Cincinnati has dedicated career services which help prepare students for interviews and gives them and insight into their workplaces. This says Charlie has helped minimize culture and language barriers. They also conduct mock interviews to help students get comfortable with the kind of questions that they will encounter. What also helps students get a job abroad is attending professional development courses where they get the opportunity to learn about workplace culture norms. These courses also cover value addition topics like punctuality, dress code, how to network and other matters which help a student understand what is expected from them From the Pace University in New York, Admission Counsellor Kellie Moran stated that the institution offered research opportunities to students like internships/co-ops and club or organization memberships. “Students involved in such activities may be included in academic publications or conferences and presentations that provide them with additional exposure to potential employers” she adds. Similarly, taking up an internship or co-op during college also provides students with the ability to develop specialized skills that will give them an edge over their peers while applying for a job and potential sponsorship after graduation. In today’s social media-centric world, Kellie stresses on the importance of students building their brand through both personal social networking site like Facebook and Instagram as well as professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Her advice to students is simple. “Routinely update your profiles with notable achievements and network virtually among alumni and potential employers. Your profile should reflect what you are professionally capable of to put your best foot forward even before an interview is scheduled” she says. Offline, Kellie states that personal interactions are as important. “Keep a 30 second-elevator speech” handy; something you can say in a short period of time that would create a lasting impression.” Acknowledging that international students do have different restrictions placed on their employment opportunities, Kellie states that working with their international counsellor is of utmost importance to ensure their internship or co-op falls within the limits of their specific visa status. Over at Binghamton University, also based in New York, International and Domestic Admissions Counsellor, Divya Khandekar advises students to think strategically. “Choose a college major carefully, one which helps you uncover career interests and identify areas of study. Explore options where your personal interests sync with career options and
(L-R) Charlie Schwartz, Divya Khandekar & Kellie Moran engage in activities that support your professional development” she says. Another important thing that helps international students gain employment is exploring their options through their courses. “There are cultural difference in every country, food, language, religion, values, emotions which sometimes could be challenging for international students and could prohibit their assimilation in a new environment. There are academic differences, such as, being used to writing essay type of answers to trying to adapt to multiple choice questions. Whether, is also a big factor in adapting to a certain region and sometimes could be a challenge. At times, just trying to find your “right fit” could be challenging for international students. These challenges are normal and most of the international students face them, which in return makes them strong and independent. International experience makes you more worldly, makes you stronger and gives you a new identity from all the challenges one has to face,” she says. Keeping in mind cultural differences, Divya advises students to accept the norms of the United States, be more assertive, punctual, dress to impress, network widely, establish connections and practise for interviews. “Do your research, attend job fairs, follow up with thank you emails and make use of professional social networking sites,” she explains. Taking all things into consideration, Charlie adds that when hiring, companies can also be partial towards international students as they bring in an increased diversity to the workforce, add cultural understanding andare loyal to the company. Charlie is more often than not, answering the ‘how easy is it to get a job’ question. However, he finds it hard to answer the question as there are many variables to be taken into account when analyzing the job market. Academic programmes, current job market, your academic records, willingness to intern, performance during interviews etc. While all the mentioned reasons hold their importance, the most important factor students need to express, is their ability and willingness to work hard which will help them secure job post graduation. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 21

I
f you have a knack for cooking and love to play with flavours, we’re quite sure that at some point, you may have considered making it a career choice. However, for most people with a dream to make it big in the culinary discipline, pursuing it in just about any degree college can sound a bit unfruitful. After all, it is an art, and you’d want to learn from only the best gurus. And, considering that there are a number of elite culinary schools around the globe that aspiring culinarians flock to every year, it can be bit overwhelming trying to choose the best fit for you. You need to keep in mind the right course for you, the quality of education provided by the institution, the connections you’ll build and the work experience you will gain through your course. Why studying abroad is better ? The more hands-on experience you have with different cuisines, the better. While Indian culinary schools are still up-and-coming today, several European countries have already established themselves as pioneers and masters in the culinary world. They not only offer a chock full of knowledge about the local cuisines, but also a vast insight into the food served around the globe. Apart from the wealth of knowledge, students can also expect the right infrastructure and facilities to

test their learning capabilities. At the end of their respective courses, most culinary schools offer placements, which make it easier for you to gain experience and entry-level jobs to several hospitality and culinary posts. A lot of these schools also encourage students to take up internships during the duration of your course for you to acquire practical knowledge and training. This ensures that you to understand your course better. Variety at its best When it comes to courses and institutions, you will be spoilt for choice – especially in Europe. Countries such as Switzerland and France possess a large number of culinary schools and institutions, which boast of an equally large number of courses that will leave you spoilt for choice. Not only do you get to pick from the best degrees, but they also have a number of diplomas for those who don’t want to acquire in-depth knowledge of the field, but just about enough to land a job in a reputed culinary organisation. You can pick the ones that suit your convenience and ensure high-quality education. With so many reasons, you don’t need any more excuses to study the culinary arts abroad. And if you’re confused about what countries to pick, we suggest Australia, France and Switzerland. yi

ustralia is an international melting pot of culture and cuisine. Exploring the possibilities for a Culinary Arts education in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Adelaide illuminates gastronomic trends that are perfect compliments to a chef's formal education. Metropolitan areas in Australia enjoy international influences that bring an assortment of flavours to the country's dynamic food scene. Culinary delights of Australia Australia boasts a robust and attractive seafood industry. Lobster, shrimp, and salmon are indigenous staples, while extensive aquaculture provides oysters, mussels and tuna. Haute and novelle cuisine found in cities incorporates creative manipulation of this incredible bounty. “Shrimp on the barbie,” is more than cliché, since it emphasizes two important features of Australian gastronomy - exceptional seafood, and a penchant for open-air grilling. Beef and other grillables, including Kangaroo, are an important part of outback food culture. Minced-meat pies are simple, but common meals in Australia, and roast dinners are another hardy reflection of daily cuisine. Biscuits and a salty spread, called vegamite, are indeed popular, but the progressive food scene in Australia shouldn't be pigeonholed by these traditional staples. Innovative chefs embrace the multicultural environment, to create a unique gastronomy dubbed “Modern Australian.” Le Cordon Bleu Australia, Sydney Le Cordon Bleu operates the world’s most comprehensive network of hospitality institutes. Culinary arts is one two of the institute’s specialties (the other is hospitality management), and students from all over the world are enrolled. omantic walks along the cobbled streets of Paris and its magnetic pull of the fashionable aren’t the only things that France is renowned for (although we’d never pass a good opportunity!). When in France, it’s always a good idea to go wine and cheese, or better yet, take up a cooking class! You can learn all the basics of the French cuisine and you get to eat all that food! How the French dine Typically, a French meal involves three courses, namely the hors d’œuvre or entrée, plat principal, which is the main course and fromage or dessert. The entrees are normally simple and involve heavily herbed Bisques (or soups), Foie Gras or Croque Monsieur. The main course is slightly richer and more carb-centric and involves a plateful of steaks and potatoes, alongside a variety of French cheese and the staple Baguette. The desserts are usually when the French go all out and enjoy a dish of Crème Brulee or a traditional sweet crepe. The food is certified by the AOC (L’Appellation D’Origine Controlee), which has been regulating it since 1411. It ensures the quality of regional foods, and assures that all ingredients have been made or produced in a traditional manner and from specific producers. For cheese lovers, France is the ultimate cheese haven because the country produces over a thousand regional varieties of cheese. But here’s a fun fact: France is also one of the biggest producers of wine! They have over 17 varieties, and are also thanked for giving the world champagne. However, not every wine with bubbles can be called champagne. Only the ones produced in the region of Champagne deserve the tittle. The rest are all just sparkling wine. While we’ve managed to shed as much light on the French cuisine as possible, we think you need to consider the universities listed below to polish up your French cooking skills. Crafting the PERFECT SMILE With an increasing awareness of oral health and the introduction of new fields like oral pathology, dentistry as a profession is witnessing rapid growth with every passing day. Dr. Shantanu Jaradi, a seasoned dentist shares his experiences on growing careers and scope in this field
C
arving a niche in the segment of dentistry, Dr. Shantanu Jaradi with his quest for innovation and entrepreneurial drive has come a long way. Dentzz Dental Care, the cosmetic and aesthetic conglomerate founded by him has collaborated with the famed and acclaimed Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva - Miss Universe India pageant and has been growing not just in India but also in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. An interview with Dr. Shantanu gives us an insight on careers in dentistry. Did you plan to enter dentistry prior to med school? Dentistry is something which has been opted for by choice and as a passion. It is a separate wing. Before medical school, I had an option to be able to choose between the fields of either medicine or dentistry.

Getting into dentistry wasn’t by chance but a choice. Even though I could easily get into medical, I chose dentistry. What do you like the most and least about your specialty? what specializations in dentistry should people opt for? The best part about dentistry and most dental procedures is that you can actually transform the personality of a person. It is about creating and endowing beautiful smiles. While one can’t ignore the fact that going to the dentist is normally perceived by most people as undergoing pain. But it is important to understand that going to the dentist is more about ensuring a good dental hygiene as your mouth is a window to your overall health. The best part is when the dentist helps the individual to
The best part about dentistry and most dental procedures is that you can actually transform the personality of a person. The overall sense of contribution and the sense of transforming people’s life is an extremely gratifying experience. get relief from the pain and bequeaths the individual with a camera ready smile which for me is indeed rewarding. In my experience, I have seen that generally aged people like 50 plus have major dental issues due to which there is major loss of teeth while the others remain dysfunctional. They have basic issues for instance like difficulty in chewing due to which they are depressed as they have to avoid their favourite food. Even though traditional dentures are effective but they are not a replacement for the natural teeth as they don’t give the same feel. At Dentzz, we ensure that various procedures have been performed to provide them with teeth closer to reality so they once again are able to eat the same kind of food that they refrained, this is indeed a life transforming event for them. Knowing you have helped them in a major way while looking at their enthusiasm, it makes me feel satisfied. The overall sense of contribution and the sense of transforming people’s life is also an extremely gratifying experience in itself. Oral care for long was devoid of consumer appeal. The new wave of consumerism in India has impacted the healthcare sector too, and nowhere is it more evident than in the rapidly evolving arena of cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry today is emerging as the most lucrative & sought after. While opting for specialisation for dentistry in general, the factor which is kept in mind is monetary benefit. I strongly feel that one has to be passionate about what one wants to attain. There are plenty of options for specialisation and one should always look for the specialisation which appeals most without considering the financial implication of that. Opting for the specialisation which you are most passionate about will help you achieve great height in that specialisation than in any other. Any mistakes/experiences you encountered that you wish you had known earlier? Being an entrepreneur, learning has always been an important aspect of my journey. Every day brings in different experiences and I feel that for the matter of experiences the cycle will keep moving on throughout my life. How demanding is dentistry as a profession? There has been a steady demand for dentistry as a profession. In any profession, the most important thing for one is to be passionate in whatever you do. If you are not passionate about dentistry and
the benefits it offers, I strongly recommend not to pursue dentistry as a career option. If you are really passionate about the field, then you are surely going to enjoy it because there is so much one can learn from the profession and lots of challenging experiences. Dentistry has a lot of challenges but these can be overcome with the right knowledge, resources and mentors. The financial prospects of the job and medical competency required? Normally people opt for opening their own set ups or they want to work and train under someone else. In the first case, your practice will directly be linked to your ability to run the practice or the business. It is crucial to have a balanced support of dentistry skills teamed with soft skills. If your skills of dentistry are amazing but if you lack in soft skills and mannerisms the patients may not be hundred percent satisfied with the services, you offer. These are the basic dynamics of dentistry. The financial prospects in dentistry are very rewarding. But also lots of people who run their own practice fail to flourish in their business because of the lack of business skills. Dynamics also apply to those who are on the job as well. If you are in the top 1 percent you will get the maximum rewards which means not only have your skills to be up to the mark but also other aspects like your body language, communication skills, how well have you been groomed, the way you give your interviews and also the way you treat your job and career has to be really excellent. The growth in this field is amazing. There are plenty of corporate dental setups that offer great growth opportunities provided that the people have to be job-ready and inclined towards a growth in a corporate setup. If this is the case, it’s going to be rewarding because you will be getting great financial prospects. What should those aspiring to make a career in the field bear in mind? To save yourself from grief and embarrassment in the middle of your career, it is very important one asks themselves why they want to choose this field. A lot of people have their beliefs most of which is monetary gain who end up regretting their decision as there are a lot of other fields available to choose from provided you have the capability. Many fail only because they do not set their directions in order. Therefore, it becomes absolutely important to be aware of what this field has to offer and the passion to want to transform smiles and cater to the oral health needs. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 33

renowned cosmetic dermatologist and laser surgeon based in Mumbai, India, Dr Apratim Goel has carved a niche for herself in the field. With over 14 years experience in cosmetic dermatology and lasers, she runs a chain of clinics in Mumbai and across India. In order to pursue dermatology as a career, what must a student focus on? Dermatology was primarily considered a branch of internal medicine with limited popularity in the past. For this reason it was covered as a minor posting during undergraduate teaching which did not expose the true temperament of the field. Gradually over time, physicians realized the quantum of conditions it encompassed and hence its due importance was given. However, it still continues to only be mildly touched upon during the teaching course but that too is fine. As a dermatologist, I would love for it to gain some limelight, the fact remains that one doesn’t need to focus on dermatology right from the beginning. The skin

How does one start out looking for an entry level job in dermatology? Dermatology is a fascinating specialty that offers an interesting clinical career with a balanced and flexible working life, traits difficult to match in other medical specialties. This makes it a popular and competitive choice. During post-graduation, you are exposed to different facets of the field like dermatosurgery, dermatopathology, aesthetic medicine, immunological research etc. Decide where your interest lies and look for a job accordingly. As a fresher, you are virgin to the commercial aspects and other variables pertaining to types of patients, cost of procedures and customized treatments. You are used to doing things the ‘textbook way’, which doesn’t always fit in the real life scenario. So, as you chose an institution or clinic specializing in your branch of interest, also look to work under someone who can mentor and train you. How important are dermatologists today? Skin, hair and nails being our visible covering show any changes immediately, distressing the individual even if the issue is small. Whether it be acne, hair loss due to alopecia areata or excessive itching due to psoriasis or eczema, alteration in daily routine and social habits are bound to occur. A dermatologist not only renders treatment for these conditions but a feeling of well-being as well.
Dermatology is a fascinating specialty that offers an interesting clinical career with a balanced and flexible working life, traits difficult to match in other medical specialties. This makes it a popular and competitive choice. Skin diseases show themselves as primary, secondary or tertiary lesions, the characteristics and combinations of which give a clue to diagnosis. Hence it is a visual science and requires a good diagnostic eye. Every rash is not an allergy and every red bump also is not acne. A specialized physician is always required to deal with this kind of perplexity. Skin is the first and largest immunological barrier and therefore the key to understanding dermatology lies in immunology. Immunology is extensively covered during the post-graduate course, enabling specialists to competently work with corticosteroids, immune suppressives and immune modulators. A number of systemic syndromes have skin lesions as initial presentations. Dermatologists identify and refer these cases based on their presentations. This also gives physicians a chance to predict manifestations or complications and monitor or prophylactically treat them. In short, we give the patient a fighting chance! Could you shed some light on the hardships of a dermatologist? Disorders of the skin, hair, and nails fall within the remit of a dermatologist. The specialty is divided broadly into medical and surgical fields, with clinicians in secondary care often practicing both. In India, training and practice in dermatology are combined with venereology and leprology. Moreover, aesthetic medicine has reached new heights in the past decades, further broadening its scope. Therefore, the versatility and broadness of the field demands competence, experience and skill in order for you to shine and make a name for yourself. If people have a blistering disorder for years or they have recurrent rashes, taking the time to figure out the cause and try to help them may take exceptional expertise. Majority of skin diseases are either metabolic or immunological in nature. This makes skin diseases specific and the patient requires regular follow up. A dermatologist needs to be patient and explanatory providing time and counsel at every visit. This makes patient retention extremely challenging. Dermatology is chiefly an outpatient specialty. Occasionally, patients are unwell or incapable of applying therapies at home and require inpatient admission under the care of a dermatologist until they can be managed in the community. Skin disease
which are require admission are generally chronic mostly associated with oozy lesions requiring soaks and dressings with low allergy thresholds. They have to be dealt with carefully and followed up routinely. The long hospital stay may lead to other complications like bed sores etc, making these cases even more challenging. Skin diseases can be oozy, crusty with foul smelling discharge. Further, widespread diseases can decrease the level of personal care in a patient. A dermatologist has to be empathetic and deal with them professionally. As dermatology is more visual and most treatments require procedural intervention along with medication, you need to be a good diagnostician as well as a skilful surgeon too. Cosmetology is the most popular dermatology branch today. This specific clientele is particularly hard to manage, satisfy and please as they are generally disease free and just want aesthetic enhancement. A lot of overlaps with multiple specialties are seen, so working with referrals and as a team is required as most diseases necessitate a multi-disciplinary approach. Where does India stand globally in the field of Dermatology? While on par with global standards, practice of dermatology in India is different mainly due to the tropical climate, low socioeconomic status, skin types and conventional ideologies. In the global market for diagnostic devices, North America is leading. However, Asia is expected to exhibit high growth rates in the next five years, with India being one of the fastest-growing markets. Dermatologists can obtain greater influence and responsibility within their field by pursuing careers in research or academics. Indian curriculum follows the triple specialty system (dermatology, venereology, and leprology). This majorly differs from the West, where leprosy is unheard of and venereology is a different branch by itself. Our students need to start from the basics, which is to lay emphasis on the proper training of students in dermatology. We need to update the curriculum in dermatology to include those subjects of current interest. It should also prescribe a period of hands-on experience in those subjects before completion of the course. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 35

t is a privilege to be entrusted the orthopaedic care of an individual. The same entails responsibility to make an accurate diagnosis, discuss all options and then, in partnership with a well-informed patient, embark on the treatment plan that will produce the best, safest, timeliest recovery and a lot more. Dr Sambhav Shah who brings experience from the Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingliam, UK guides you on orthopaedics as a career. When and how did you stumble upon a career in orthopaedics?
36 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
I wouldn’t really say I stumbled upon this career choice. My father is an orthopaedic surgeon and I have grown up seeing him work in this field, spent countless hours as a child in his clinic and seen the immense satisfaction he gets out of helping his patients. I feel like I was cut out for this profession and have known it since a while, so when the time came for me to make the much-dreaded career decision, it was a piece of cake. Medicine is really not a field you just decide to pursue because your best friend is doing so or because your parents want to see their child as a doctor. Personally, I could always see that "Dr" written in front of my name on
When it comes to being a doctor, it is no secret that it is a long and tedious process to acquire the degree. Most important is to continuously update ourselves with the latest in medical developments the door of my practice just like my father. However, while doing my residency in orthopaedics, I realized that operating on the spine gave me the most job satisfaction. I felt that I won a war because spinal surgeries are the most difficult ones and require high skill set. Hence, I further specialized as a spine surgeon and put in 6 more years of training. So, I followed what I’ve always wanted to be, my dream and here I am! What are the qualifications required to succeed in the profession? When it comes to being a doctor, it is no secret that it is a long and tedious process to acquire the degree. Years of hard work, exams after exams, battling the unfortunate issue of many quotas to get yourself admission in the best institution and the competition to get be no 1. However, 2-3 degrees including fellowships, in order to be the best, might take a toll on you. Patience and focus are key to surpass all these obstacles in this field. Additionally, aside from the obvious educational qualities, there are several characteristics a doctor needs to have in order to succeed in this profession. Getting to know your patients, being approachable and being a good listener are only a few of the traits one needs to possess. There are times when our patients cannot express themselves correctly and pin point on what the problem is. At that point of time, as a doctor, we need to listen carefully to their plea, comprehend it and ask the right questions in order to diagnose the issue correctly. A lapse in our judgement is not acceptable in our field so listening well, paying attention to the patient’s dialogue, examining thoroughly and acute concentration is a must. Of course, in addition to this, it is necessary to have a steady hand and be able to focus for hours when we are in surgery. Most important is to continuously update ourselves with the latest in medical developments Something that keeps you going? My passion for helping people, my love for the study of medicine and my goal of being the best in the field is what really keeps me going. There have been many times when I have felt like just giving up in midst of my education, but something my father told me always rung in my ears when such a thought passed my mind. He said “The path is not an easy one that you have taken. But at the end of the day the satisfaction and gratitude you get when you treat a person and help them to live longer and healthier, there is nothing in this world that is comparable to
that. And that day, you will realise that it is all worth it.” I held onto his advice not only back then but even today and that is the reason what and where I am today. In order to excel myself in spine surgery, I have trained and worked in U.K, Singapore, Milan, Germany to name a few, sometimes with my wife and children and sometimes without. But my focus did not deter. It took time but I have accomplished what I wanted, all with the help of determination, my family and my zeal for medicine. Tell us something about the most difficult patient you treated and how did you deal with it? My 85 year old grandfather. He was suffering from severe leg pain and back pain. Also, he was already operated 15 years ago for his low back issue but started developing severe pain again which restricted his mobility. He also had issues in his upper limbs due to compression of spinal cord in his neck. He failed conservative management for many years. Finally, my grandfather dropped the ball in my court and left it to me to decide his fate. As his quality of life had deteriorated significantly I asked him to undergo surgery. The next question was who will operate on him? As a surgeon one lands up believing with time that he’s the best and I would not want any second best surgeon to carry out the surgery. Hence, I decided to operate him myself. The decision was difficult as during the 7 hr surgery on his back and neck anything could have happened. He could have died on table owing to his age or woken up paralysed after the surgery and I would have to live with that blame. Once surgery was over and he was out of anesthesia talking and moving his legs, I had a sigh of relief as well as pride. I had a big smile on my face as the first thing he told me was “ I was in the best hands possible, I knew I will walk again”. A piece of advice for those wanting to pursue a career in this field? Study hard, do your best, keep plugging along, and don’t get discouraged. If you put in the effort, you will reach your goal.Whatever your medical interests might be —pediatrics, orthopaedics, medicine, oncology—make a point to seek out doctors in those specialties so you can interview and perhaps even shadow them for an afternoon so that you can affirm that this is the field you want to enter. Don’t go by herd mentality, ever! Determination, focus and a sharp mind will get you places in this field. Education and academics is very important as well, so don’t deter from your goal. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 37

I knew very early that I wanted to be a doctor.

What has inspired you to pave a career in this field? As a child, i was always interested in technology and gadgets which could be used to better life. Once i got into medicine, i realised that the field in which i could make the biggest impact was cancer. Once i finished my training in cancer surgery, i was lucky to be in the age of major technological advances in the surgical field. I travelled to the US where i trained further for 4 years to integrate modern technology into the field of cancer thereby improving quality of life for cancer patients. What does a typical work week look like for you?
The most common myth is that cancer surgeons are boring and grim people. Yes, our field requires intense focus and dedication, but we are jovial fun loving people! If making a difference in people’s lives is what you like, this is the job for you. Being a dedicated uro-oncological surgeon, my days are very structured. Surgery in the morning starts at 8 am and gets done by 2 pm. Then I see patients in the OPD. And I usually get done by around 7. There are hardly any emergencies and I don’t remember ever having to rush to the hospital in the middle of the night. Medical oncology focuses on the study of the origin, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of any malignant growth that affects any part of the human body. A super-specialisation, oncology primarily focuses on diagnosing tumours to judge if they are cancerous and depending on the result, treat it. Uro-oncology focuses on the treatment of kidney, prostrate and urinary gland cancers. WHAT ARE THE EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED TO SUCCEED IN THIS CAREER? After 12th, the MBBS course is five and a half years. Then one has to do Master of General Surgery, a 3 year course. Then another 3 years to do Masters in Urology and then another 3 years to do Masters in Cancer Surgery. Apart from a medical qualification, professionals in the field must be compassionate. Cancer is a complicated disease and hence, being able to understand a patient’s issue and communicating the right facts to him/her requires good communication skills and a positive attitude. Attention to detail helps doctors avoid further complications. Since it is a matter of someone’s life, it is essential to take an honest approach. Working long hours and being available at all times is a part of the job. Can you tell us something regarding the sections in oncology? The practice of oncology is divided into two sections – medical oncology and surgical oncology. Students who wish to make a career in this field must complete the MBBS, MD in internal medicine or general surgery depending on their area of interest, followed by a super-specialisation in cancer surgery. Doctors can further specialise in uro-oncology, gynaecological oncology, paediatric oncology, haematological oncology, etc. Oncologists primarily work in hospitals with advanced infrastructure that supports robotic surgeries. They can alternately set up their private practice. The most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part for me is the gratefulness of family members when patient is getting ready to be discharged after a successful cancer surgery. Describe the work and remuneration scope? With a population of over 125 million and significantly fewer uro-oncologists in India, there is scope for a career in the field. Most doctors in the field are limited to treating patients in major metros across the country owing to the advanced technology needed to treat diseases under this specialisation. With each surgery taking more than three hours and with limited doctor-patient communication, the demand for doctors in the field is increasing. While there are opportunities for a career in the field, students in India are not willing to invest the time, money and effort required to specialise in it. Fresh entrants in the field can earn up to Rs 4 lakh a month on completion of an MS in cancer surgery. After gaining experience, the remuneration goes up. What are the common misconceptions people have regarding your career? The most common myth is that cancer surgeons are boring and grim people. Yes, our field requires intense focus and dedication, but we are jovial fun loving people! The new trends in oncology? In the last 10 years, uro-oncology has changed drastically. What once required massive surgery with larger incisions to treat a patient is now done through four small incisions using a robot. With an increasing number of complicated cancers affecting remote body parts, doctors now use robotic surgery to treat the tumour with minimal pain and quicker post-operative recovery. Patients now understand the difference between open surgery and robotic surgery, thanks to the information they receive off the internet. This has made them more confident to approach a doctor for treatment. Advice for people who want to start off in this career? Be clear about what you want to do. Choose a career that you enjoy. If making a difference in people’s lives is what you like, this is the job for you. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 39

The more a doctor works in the wards, the more hands on experience they get. Fortunately in India, we are lucky to have practical oriented courses. What senior doctors need to do is motivate youngsters to take up work experience. It may seem insignificant at the start, but down the line, you realise that it’s importance. Being committed during your training years is extremely important. Working in the wards also exposes you to many doctors and their ways of working which is also an important part of training. If you have finished your MS and diploma, 40 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
More important than qualifications is being dedicated to the line and ward work. Fortunately in India, we are lucky to have practical oriented courses. Working in wards exposes you to many doctors and their ways of working which is also an important part of training. it is important to attend workshops so you are constantly updated and can interact with different faculty and learn their ways of performing a surgery. I also feel that subscriptions to medical journals are also important. Nowadays, colleges offer skill development training with simulation labs where you can practise your manoeuvres. That is also important to becoming a good gynaecologist. Is the profession daunting? What should aspirants keep in mind? Every branch of medicine is hard work, but I don’t think it is daunting. You have to work very hard during your formative years and throughout your career while you build your practise. It can be difficult to land your first job, but accept it as part and parcel of every career and work towards your goal of getting a job. You have to be mentally prepared for the profession. There is a lot to learn in terms of academics and even more in the wards. What are some of the challenges of being a gynaecologist? The challenge in the medical field is that there is always more than one way of going about with a procedure. It is very important to have confidence in yourself and your method of operating. In gynaecology, equal importance is given to written and oral exams. The oral exams focus largely on the student’s practical knowledge which again reiterates my point of ward work being extremely important. Also presenting case studies is very important in the field as you also learn from your mistakes when you get other opinions. On the whole though, I would say, the exams are the most daunting part of the journey. Are there any misconceptions surrounding the field of gynaecology? I feel that right now, the focus is shifting to caesarean section deliveries and there is less
importance given to normal deliveries. With advances in technology, it has become easier to identify problems at any early stage, also expecting mothers are very often not prepared for the pain of delivery. A good gynaecologist has to be able reach out to their patients, empathize with them and counsel them. Also the medico-legal scenario has changed and doctors need to keep this in mind. Do you think the gynaecology sector in India is on par with that of its Western counterparts? I think we have a lot of scope to practise, and that is what gives our surgeons an edge of their counterparts. With simulators being used widely in colleges, it gives our students plenty of chances to practise deliveries and other surgeries before they become fully fledged doctors. As seniors, we are always there to train our juniors, which is one of the biggest differences between doctors in India and doctors abroad. This is one field where technological advances enter the country very easily and in that sense we are not too far behind from the West. Gynaecology is also one field which guarantees graduates a job as well as job security. You hold the position of President of the Mumbai Obstetrics & Gynaecological Society. What does the organization do to help gynaecology students? We have a vision and mission, which centres on academics for doctors. For post graduation students, we have a programme in medical colleges, where cases are discussed, students present papers and experts share their knowledge. These activities happen throughout the year and we also have a five day course which is an exam preparatory course which is conducted once a year. This course has become so popular that even non gynaecology students take part in it; just for the knowledge sharing that happens. We also organize outreach programmes, conferences etc. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 41

CLARIFICATION If I get admission in a government engineering college after my Diploma in Engineering, should I take it up or start applying for jobs as a Diploma holder? Shailendra
answer answer
An engineering degree offers comparatively better employment and advancement opportunities than a diploma in engineering. Hence, completing your engineering degree would be the best investment for the long term. However, if you are not confident of being able to handle the demands of the engineering degree, and/or need to start working soon for economic reasons, then aim for a job.
USA I'm pursuing BSc from Delhi University. I aspire to go USA for further studies after graduation. Will 15 years of formal education suffice? Can I switch to other stream in USA? Digamber Rana It is advisable for you to complete an additional year of formal studies to be a stronger applicant for a graduate (masters) degree in the U.S. Some students with a good track record are also able to secure admission after a three-year Bachelor's degree, but you will have to check with university admissions offices for more information on eligibility to verify if that would be possible for you. It may be possible for you to move to another stream in the USA, but depending upon the eligibility requirements of that stream/programme.

How To
Invest
the Stock in
Market Finding ‘Safe Haven’ in stormy stock markets is difficult but once you know how it is done it becomes your easy money source. Leo Oommen tells you the basics to invest in the stock market
‘I have enough money’ said no one ever. We all have goals to accomplish and they do require money. Some of us would like to live certain luxurious lifestyle, some would like to enjoy the experience of travelling in their 20's or 30's but what stops them is not having enough money. For youngsters having that extra earned money is truly bliss. The question arises of how and where to invest your money so that you receive long term benefits of it. Like you learn skills even investing is a skill you need to learn; a different skill to grasp and it is best to start young. Having enough money to get through your golden years and take care of your family is definitely something you will be concerned about as you get older. The fact is, the sooner you start investing, the more money you’ll have to live on as you age. Many young adults don't take the time to understand how to invest wisely. In many cases, this is 44 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
because they are concerned about the here-and-now, not the future. While you don't have to forgo your lifestyle when you are young, taking a long-term focus and investing consistently over a long period of time will ensure that your savings and net worth are there when you need them. Missteps are common when learning something new such as investments in stock market, but when dealing with money, they can have serious consequences. Investors who start young generally have the flexibility and time frame to take on risk and recover from their money-losing errors. While investing may seem a bit intimidating in the beginning, it’s important to understand the very basics of investment and what you can hope to gain from them. Know the jargon: Stocks, stocks, stocks All you hear is stocks when you
enter this market. Stocks are listed on exchanges like in Mumbai certain companies are listed on Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The stock market is a place where stocks/shares are bought and sold. Securities are simply investments which can be stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The equity owner When you are the equity owner of the company it means you hold a share/stock or part of shares of the company. When you buy a stock, you're buying a tiny little piece of an actual company. Not a lot, but ownership nonetheless. Stocks are more volatile than bonds, and may therefore yield greater rewards or losses. Bonds and loans When you purchase a bond, you're essentially loaning a little money to an entity - like the government, for instance - and that entity has to pay you back after a fixed period
of time, with interest. There aren't bond exchanges that show up in a ticker, because bonds are traded differently than stocks. Diversification Diversification means spreading your money out among different kinds of investments. There are a lot of opinions out there about how diversified an investment portfolio needs to be, but most everyone agrees that putting all of your financial eggs in one basket is a recipe for disaster. ROI ROI means Return on Investment. The ROI is how much money you make on your investments. To get an idea of how well your investments are performing, you can calculate the ROI by dividing an investment's gains by its costs. Although no sure-shot formula has yet been discovered for success in stock markets, here are some golden rules which, if followed prudently, may increase your chances of getting a good return. Never procrastinate Procrastination is never good, but it can be especially detrimental while investing because the markets move so quickly. Good investment ideas are not always easy to find. If, after doing research, a good investment idea arises, it is important to act on it before the rest of the market takes note and beats you to it. Young investors are prone to not acting on a good idea out of fear or inexperience. Stop speculating, start investing Instead of speculating and gambling, a young investor should look to invest in companies that have higher risk but greater upside potential over the long term. A young investor is at an advantage in his or her investing life. Holding the level of wealth constant, an investor's age affects how much risk he or she can take on. So, a
young investor can seek out bigger returns by taking bigger risks. This may seem like an argument for a young investor to speculate, but it is not. Ask enough questions Be curious, be energetic and be active. Ask why something is happening. Usually young investors tend not to speak about it to an expert or someone who is already in the field for years due to assumption of feeling inferior. One of the most important factors in forming investment decisions is asking why. If an asset is trading at half of an investor's perceived value, there is a reason and it is the investor's responsibility to find it.
“Like you learn skills even investing is a skill you need to learn; a different skill to grasp and it is best to start young. Investors who start young generally have the flexibility and time frame to take on risk and recover from their money-losing errors.” Have realistic expectations ‘Hope for the best and be prepared for the worst’ this works aptly even for the stock market situations. It is good to have expectations but make sure that they are realistic in nature. Do not create your financial goals on unrealistic assumptions. Don’t let emotions ruin you Many young investors have been losing money in stock markets due to their inability to control emotions, particularly fear and
greed. In a bull market, the lure of quick wealth is difficult to resist. In a bear market, on the other hand, investors panic and sell their shares at rock-bottom prices. Thus, fear and greed are the worst emotions to feel when investing, and it is better not to be guided by them. Avoid the herd mentality The typical buyer's decision is usually heavily influenced by the actions of his acquaintances, neighbours or relatives. The herd mentality would backfire you in the long term. If you do not want to lose your hard earned money, do not follow where the crowd goes. The world's greatest investor Warren Buffett was surely not wrong when he said, "Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful!" Keep investing An investor has the best ability to seek a higher return and take on higher risk when they have a long-term time horizon. Investors have their longest time horizons, and therefore a high tolerance for risk, when they are young. Young people also tend to be less experienced with having money. As a result, they are often tempted to focus on how money can benefit them in the present, without focusing on any long-term goals (such as retirement). Just saving money is great, but it does not offer much, if any profit like an investment can. Being patient is the key to seeing the benefits of investment, so remember that while it seems like you’re giving your money away at first, it will be well worth it in the end when you get that final return on all of your hard work and money invested. Not only will you have money for the future, but investing can be fun as well. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 45
With the current economic meltdown do you think it is wise to invest in the stock market or is it too risky? If you had the funds where would you invest?
Mayank Yadav It is a good option to invest in the stock market because it gives investors a good experience of the risks involved in them as well as those involved in mutual funds.
Kirti Singh Rather than investing in the stock market, I would invest in the textile market as the industry has more control over its growth. The stock market is dependent on other businesses, and I would not like to take the risk.
Rishab Jain I would like to invest in real estate more than the stock market as prices are rising more than stocks. There is more of a risk involved with stocks. If India continues at the current pace, it can become a superpower by 2020 and I would prefer owning property than stocks.
Divanshu Tawari Rather than investing in the stock market, I would invest in the textile market as the industry has more control over its growth. The stock market is dependent on other businesses, and I would not like to take the risk.
Paresh Chandiramani I would prefer investing in mutual funds, rather than investing directly in the stock market, because the former is less risky. If I invest in the stock market, I am at a risk of losing all my money, whereas even if a mutual fund falls, I can recover my investments.
Nilta Sood Investments in the stock market is a good option if you are patient enough to wait for long term results. If you invest wisely, the benefits are multi-fold, so definitely stock markets are a good investment option.

he best day of the year might be your birthday, but we can think of plenty other days that could also potentially be your best. If you haven’t guessed it yet, we’re talking about annual festivals – Oktoberfest, Halloween and Holi in particular! These rambunctious, exuberant festivals have been taking the world by storm and are so much fun that their celebrations are slowly gaining momentum even in foreign countries. What makes these festivals so amusing is the fact that they require you to go all out with their celebrations, pushing people to get out of their houses and actually meet people for some boisterous fun. Not to mention, they are a sight to behold! Picture cheery, joyful faces making merry at a beer carnival on Oktoberfest or faces covered in colours of the rainbow – these are just a few of the sightings you will see on the day of these festivals.

OKTOBERFEST
Over the past few years or so, we have truly noticed a significant rise in the number of places celebrating Oktoberfest, not just in Germany where it originated, but around the globe. For all those still catching up, Oktoberfest is a two-week long festival that is held in Munich, Germany, each year. While it was originally celebrated just in Munich, the festival has spread to various parts of Germany and observes an attendance of over six million people from around the world every year. It all started… Back in 1810 in Munich, a wedding party was organised in order to celebrate the union of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Everyone in Munich was invited to celebrate, and the food and drinks would flow till the wee hours of the morning.Over time, this celebration became a tradition each year, and the German immigrants who attended these celebrations took the tradition back to their homes in other countries. Thus, began the world's affair with Oktoberfest! How its done Typically, Oktoberfest lasts for a good 16 days, and although it's called “Oktoberfest”, the festival kicks off in late September, and goes on well in to early October. The festival revolves around the consumption of large quantities of beer, alongside enjoying a number of attractions such as amusement rides, sidestalls and games. A large number of concerts are held by local and international artists as well, along with a parade to open the festival, which sees the march of several breweries, followed by decorated floats and horse carriages. Post the parade, the first beer barrel is opened by the Lord Mayor, who exclaims “O’zapft is!” (It’s tapped!) which he does to indicate the Oktoberfest has officially started. Several tents are pitched on the grounds that house the stalls of breweries and restaurants serving beer. And if you’re a foodie, you’d be glad to know that traditional German food is pretty common during thi s time of the year. Picture piles of delicious Hendi (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Sauerkraut (red cabbage) and Obatzda (spicy cheese-butter spread)! In other countries The largest Oktoberfest celebrations usually take place in Canada, which is followed by Brazil and Cincinnati. The Argentinians celebrate Oktoberfest as the Fiesta Nacional de la Cerveza and is known to be the first by German immigrants outside the country. Before 2012, Australian universities were notorious for their raucous Oktoberfest celebrations which were eventually banned. Today, the festival is organised every year by the Harmonie German Club in Canberra over a period of three days. Our very own Bangalore and Chennai have since 2005 and 2012 respectively, held Oktoberfest celebrations across the city, which involved a lavish Bavaria spread and plenty of German beers to choose from. 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 51
Entertainment Feature HALLOWEEN Halloween is easily one of the oldest holidays in the world, and although a fairly American concept, it is celebrated quite extensively around the world. Today, especially in America, you can’t walk into a neighbourhood without bumping into a clown or a ghoul (all fake, of course!). Little kids walking up to doorsteps dressed in their scariest best is a common sight, while many people even set up their homes with Halloween-themed décor. Where it all began Originating in Ireland, the roots of Halloween date back to the Celts almost 2,000 years ago. It marked the end of summer and the harvesting season, and the beginning of the cold, dark winter. This season was often associated with human death, and often mixed well with the Celtic belief that on this night, the boundary between the world of the dead and the living became blurred. They believed that it was the dead who came back to haunt them on this night and damaged all the crops. During this time, huge bonfires were lit to burn damaged crops and make animal sacrifices. People dressed up as animals, complete with animal heads and skins, thus leading to the tradition of wearing costumes on this day. How it’s done Dressing up as ghosts and ghouls is common on the night of Halloween, but did you know that trick-o-treating is a practice that dates back to the All Souls’ Day parade in England? During these festivities, the poor would beg for food and would be given soul cakes in return for the family’s dead relatives. Overtime, this practise faded, but was carried out by children who went from door to door, asking for sweeties. Around the globe In America and the UK, the tradition is quite pompous with even adults dressing up in costumes and heading out to town. Parties are organised and children are seen running from door to door, competing to collect the best candy. Amusement parks are set up with Halloween décor, while special rides are created to add to the fun and excitement. The Mexicans, Latin Americans and Spanish celebrate the All Souls’ Day, which is kickstarted on the 31st October. It is more commonly referred to as Dia De Los Muertos and honours the dead who are believed to return to their earthly homes on this day. Families construct altars and light them up with candles and incense sticks. They are also decorated with flowers, family photos, food and drinks. They even leave behind a wash basin with water in it so the souls can wash their feet before they indulge. Closer to home, Halloween is slowly picking up in India with several places organizing costume parties to celebrate the day. Restaurants and clubs host parties drinks that look like blood and food designed to look like graves, organizers go all out to strike fear in your heart. 52 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
HOLI
A festival with plenty of colour and fervour, Holi adds a touch of euphoria to the air on the day that it is celebrated. Drawing awe-struck revellers from across the world, this day is ideally celebrated in the spring and has been included in several Bollywood films and international music videos such as Coldplay’s Hymn for the Weekend. Where it began Primarily celebrated by the Hindus in India and Nepal, it is a two-day festival that starts on the day of the Full Moon in February or mid-March. Its cultural roots can be dated back to the Puranas, Dasakumara Charita and are also mentioned by the poet Kalidasa during the 4th century. The celebrations are also mentioned in the 7th century Sanskrit Drama Ratnavali. It is known to have caught the fancy of European traders and British colonial staff in the 17th century, thus lighting the initial attraction of the West towards Holi. The legend The story goes that a young Krishna who had a dark complexion was extremely jealous of his beloved Radha’s fair skin. In a mischievous mood, he smeared her face with colour and since then, it has been said that lover’s apply colour on each other as an expression of love. How it’s done The 2-day festival is kick-started with the burning of wood and combustible materials in bonfires. An effigy is burned at the top of the fire to signify Holika. At homes, sweets such as gujiya, mathri and malpuas are prepared among other delicious delicacies. In the morning after the Holika bonfire, people set out to celebrate with bags and plates of coloured powder and buckets of water. There is also a lot of singing and dancing involved, alongside the consumption of thandai and bhaang. Around the globe The craze for Holi has only just picked up, but it is already being celebrated in places such as Cape Town, Berlin and San Francisco. Cape Town has its own Holi-inspired festival called the We Are One Colour festival, which holds its own Grand Parade. A lot of countries also hold colour runs, which are more or less inspired by this festival. If you’re in Florida, head to the Life In Colour festival for a taste of the Holi madness or Colorjam in Texas which captures the essence of Holi along with a music festival. Named after our favourite city, the Mumbai Colour Festival in Netherlands, celebrates colours, life, love apart from happiness. Over in Ibiza, Holi gets as happy as it can get with the Holi Garden Festival with the brightest music and colour possible, spreading joy and amiability. With plenty happening across the globe to mark this traditionally Indian festival, it's safe to say that the phenonmenon will only get bigger. yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 53

Holidating: The New Way To Date
With dating become more and more of a task, the idea of finding a short-term date, just for the holidays is picking up. Mallica Patel tells you more about this trend
54 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
I
t doesn’t take a genius to decipher holidating as holidays+dating. We all know what holidays are, and what dating is. But what is holidating? Let’s take a look through this example: Three years ago, two best friends, complete workaholics with no time for relationships were to be visiting their families for Christmas. However, they were not willing to bear the thought of not having a date for their family dinners and gatherings. So they started a blog called Two Girls, One Season, put up an advertisement which went something like this: “Hey, we’re hot, good looking girls who need boyfriends for Christmas whom we will dump at New Years Eve, would you be interested?” Okay, the advertisement wasn’t that simple. It also included a detailed one page description of the type of boys they were looking for and how they plan to go about with the application and selection process. Three months later, they blogged about how they found dates and how thankful they were for the temporary knights in shining armour they took as da tes. Was this online dating? Nah! Finding matches at parties? Nah! Holidating? Hell yeah! Turns out, this is the story of a lot of singles. However, not everyone goes all out to upload advertisements for suitable flings/dates. According to statistics, people feel the loneliest during holidays when they have to spend time with their families and cry internally when their sisters show off their newly attained baby bump...ouch! Here’s where holidating saves the day. Holidating can go two ways. First, people who seek dates only for the holidays so that they can show their respective families how romantically delightful their life is. However, truth is, that the only way they could have dates was if their job agreed to take on a human form and go with them. Second are the ones who find love during holidays. Picture this- you are on a weeklong trip to Verona. While at it you visit the famous Wall of Love Letters and as you skim through the wall you come across a heartbroken girl/boy and you go up to him/ her and offer comfort to him/her heartbroken soul. You get to talking and one thing leads to another and in no time you find yourself drinking wine at a quaint restaurant in a little lane. The right next question which arises is how does one go about holidating? There isn’t a lot of difference in the modus operandi of usual dating. The same sources such as dating applications used for dating can be used here as well for holidating. Of course, the duration of the relationship might vary and needs to be mutually agreed on by both the partners before embarking on this short and sweet journey. Another experiment at holidating proved successful when the Cosmopolitan Magazine recently took 60 singles on a trip to Venice. No one had met anyone before the trip and were all assigned to different dates throughout their journey. The trip included holidaying throughout Venice but with
dates whom they have just met. The participants also bonded mid air, on their flight to Venice, as they were seated with the respective dates. They also ended up creating a world record of dating 35,000 feet up. They dispersed as soon as they landed in New York. And as much as the people enjoyed their day they didn’t exactly aim at contacting their dates again. The idea was simple- meet a new person, bond and have a ball of a time with them and bid farewell. Talk about a short duration! Whether you find a date only for the holidays or you meet someone during the holidays, there is no intention of continuing the relationship. Take for example the movie Before Sunrise. The two characters, Jesse and Celine met on a train in France and from there embarked on a one day journey of togetherness and came across different people and places. At the end of two days, they part ways knowing full well that even though they have fallen for each other, they have to go their own ways. Their lives go back to before they met, with one even getting married to a different character. Talking boons and banes of this: 1.You can put up an amazing façade during the holidays You might want to cry on the inside when that happens 2.The joy of meeting someone during the holidays and enjoying a good 10 days with him/ her seems like quite a treat for an adventure junkie We can’t think of any. 3. A good solution for commitment phobics and workaholics. Not for people who are looking for their soul mates and can’t bear the thought of arranging a date for holidays. The concept of holidating emerged in Europe where people often met their families during family gatherings on Christmas and Thanksgiving. In India, however the concept of holidating hasn’t caught on yet considering our culture. However, as we adopt the western ideas soon enough the idea of dating and the need for a holidate may become apparent. So the next time you feel the need to be with someone for only the time being and your boss invites you for a party, handing you over two passes with a wink, you know what to do! yi

Is the Pokémon Go craze dying out too soon? Read about how it all started and go to where it is today
I
f you haven’t heard of Pokémon Go, we’d suggest you crawl out from the rock you’ve been living under. Software giant Niantic’s latest offering in July 2016 sent the world in a tizzy, and suddenly it was the 90’s all over again where people were out to ‘catch em all’, this time using technology. Released on both iOS and Android platforms, the location based augmented reality game used a players GPS to find, capture and train Pokemon and was the next biggest thing since Zombies, Run! Pokémon Go allowed users to capture Pokémon with Poke balls, train them at gyms and capture eggs which needed to be hatched. Pokémon Go saw people who have never walked more than a few steps a day, suddenly walking miles to find those rare Pokémon at Poke stops in the vicinity or hatch eggs. While the game was released only in a few countries, it didn’t take the great Indian mind long to figure out
56 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
how to jump on the bandwagon. Apk files went viral and within no time, almost every teenager and twenty-something year olds were playing the game. Poke walks were organized across cities, Pokémon Go was trending for weeks on end, and it was safe to say, India was addicted. What was interesting to see was a majority of the Poké stops were either strategically or stupidly (depending which side of religious tolerance you’re on) placed. Temples, churches, mosques were all targeted as spots with rare Pokémon and gyms. Suddenly, they were flooded with youth, albeit buried in their phones, but hey, something got them to go to a shrine without being forced. While all this was happening, there were reports of the revered Dargah Aala Hazrat issuing a fatwa against the game. The reason being, that it led people from other faiths to enter mosques during prayers and was considered inappropriate.
Pokémon Go was also blamed for a large number of accidents, crimes, injuries, traffic violations and even causing family problems. There were reports of people walking out of office midway because a Pokémon suddenly appeared nearby, people bunking work to go catch them and all this while the game was not yet officially launched in India. Of course Niantic knew what a global phenomenon it had caused, but chose to remain silent on an official India launch. Rumours spread that when it did happen, users who had downloaded it illegally would be banned forever, but there was also hope that they could start fresh and improve their rankings. However, before either could come true, the Pokémon Go craze started to wear off. No surprises there, considering the game targeted the age group of 20-30 who have plenty of entertainment options at their disposal and are constantly on
the lookout for the next big thing. Also, the novelty wore off. How often can you walk around doing the same things every day? In a day and age with enough routines enforced on them, another was just too much to handle. As rapidly as it captured users, it also lost them. The game became ‘so yesterday’ as the kids would call it. The fact that the game had not officially launched in India made updating the app troublesome and also added to Niantic’s downward spiral. India’s poor network issues and expensive data plans too added to users getting fed up and uninstalling the game. Maybe, just maybe, if Jio was launched sooner, it would have been a winwin for both Niantic as well apart from Reliance. Users wanted more, which Niantic was not giving them. Those who managed to download and updated apk complained that the new version had distracting fonts, the battery saver mode was scrapped and they no longer wanted to train and fight with people they did not know. They wanted to battle it out with friends, trade Pokémon and make tracking easier. Many users also complained they were fed up of finding Rattatas instead of other vital Pokémon. While there is still no word of Pokémon Go making an official India release, one thing’s for sure, Pokémon Go may die ahead of its time, but Pokémon isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Currently airing their 19th season with close to a thousand episodes produced, the brand continues to remain one of Nintendo’s best selling franchises, coming in a close second to popular game Super Mario. Despite losing India as a market, Pokémon definitely has nothing to worry about, especially when its latest series Pokémon Sun
and Moon comes out later this year. And who knows, with new Pokémon, the game might even make a comeback. Only time will tell. The Fun Side Pokémon Go may have sent world in a tizzy post its launch, but there have been some seriously cool developments ever since. Most of us may be hard at work trying to find as many Pokemon as we possibly can, but one Nick Johnson went all out and has managed to find 142 of all 151 Pokemon. And now, the Brooklyn-based trainer has been granted a worldwide trip to catch the rest of the remaining Pokémon. Six out of these are can be found in the US itself, while three are based in international regions. And, he gets to take his girlfriend along! If this isn’t the perfect example of hard work paying off, we don’t know what is! US National Parks Visits to US national parks are reported to have spiked following the launch of the app in the US. And while players are reminded to be vigilant and avoid straying off designated paths while hunting for the elusive characters, they’re also reminded to keep an eye out for real-life wonders like icy tundra, grassy plains, and gleaming mountains. “We’d like to welcome all you trainers to your national parks, where you might find more than just a new virtual companion,” said Director Jon Jarvis in a Facebook post. Rio 2016 Olympics Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor Eduardo Paes posted a Facebook plea asking Nintendo to bring the popular app to Brazil in time for the games. While the city has been mapped for the Pokémon Go, no launch date has been
announced. The games begin August 5. National Mall, Washington DC Not only are players invited to hunt for the elusive creatures across America’s national parks, the US National Park Service went so far as to organize a “Catch the Mall Pokémon Hunt,” led by a tech-savvy ranger last weekend at the National Mall. In addition to helping players catch elusive Pokémon characters, rangers injected a bit of national park trivia into the hunts. Sydney Opera House Earlier this week, the iconic opera house in Sydney attracted hundreds of players to its front steps after organizing a Pokémon Go hunt at lunchtime. Museum of Modern Art, New York One of the most popular museums in New York features two Poké Stops, revealed the MoMA in a bid to attract visitors. The oldest restored townhouse and first landmark in New York City, the Merchant House Museum, told The Independent it welcomes Pokémon Go players to tour the house while capturing the characters. The house is considered one of the best examples of preserved architecture and design from the 19th century and dates back to 1832. However, the game hasn’t been so warmly received everywhere across the world. Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Russia, Indonesia, Belarus, Turkey Australia and Portugal have either banned it or issued a fatwa against it or threatened employees with immediate dismissal if seen playing during work hours or taking time off to go play the game. yi

Our glaming up sessions got easier, minus any worries to dress up or reach the salon on time. The founders of MyGlamm speak to us

With a user-friendly interface and a spate of beauty services which will have you spoilt for choice, the beauty app MyGlamm is just getting better with time. With more additions like the renowned Margaret Dabbs manicure and pedicure beauty services, the renowned novalash and HD brow services, the app is becoming a favourite #glamupathome app. We interview Neeraj Sanghani, EVP Products & Strategy, MyGlamm and Darpan Sanghavi, the founder of MyGlamm who tell us everything we need to know about the convinient and popular beauty app. The inception of the app and idea behind it? We wanted MyGlamm customers to not just love the concept of getting high quality hair and beauty services, when they want it and where they want it, but we also wanted to make the whole booking experience quick and easy. Our motto of ‘beauty to your doorstep’ is delivered with an Android and iOS app, that enables users to book services at the click of a button. The idea was simple to make the user experience smooth and as easy as just a few clicks! The value proposition of the app? It’s a time saver. Our app is everything that contrasts the typical experience of a user going through the tedious process of making bookings through the phone. Booking an appointment on the app doesn’t
How has the response of people towards getting styling services at home been? Like they say, convenience is the king! Stepping out of the house just to get to the parlour on a weekend is not something women enjoy. Getting a spa or beauty service while relaxing on your couch watching your favourite rom-com is as comfortable as it sounds. It is always convenient to get a salon service at home whether you’re in a rush to get somewhere or are in no mood to step out. Moreover, if you’re having a tough day at work, MyGlamm can send their artists to your office for a head massage. Customers who’ve used our services before keep coming back for more. The response has been great! The growth of the app from its inception? Currently, services can be booked over the phone or the app. We have noticed that over 50% of our business is either repeat or through referrals! Customers are loving the concept of getting high quality hair and beauty services, when they want it and where they want it. Mani-pedi, blow-dry, facials and waxing have been immensely popular. Another real popular service is MyGlamm Parties – where women are inviting 8 – 10 friends over and enjoying mani-pedis and nail art over high tea or champagne! MyGlamm services are now available in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi with few other tier 1 and tier 2 cities that are also coming soon! Any future plans with respect to app? There’s a lot in the pipeline. Our business is constantly evolving and so is our product. Auto-selection of artists based on past bookings, favourite an artist and expert consultation are some customer experience features we will be launching soon. Also, we are revamping the design to make it more user-friendly. The new version should be out next month. I’m sure it is going to be really great.

Point of View
Unfinished Fairytales
and Broken Engagements
Nisha JamVwal explores the most common reasons for breakups and what couples can do to avoid these heartbreaks
K
ate was imagining a fairy-tale wedding and was all set with her gown, jewellery et all, when it broke off unceremoniously. She’s shattered. I can imagine how bad it must be because I am sad about it too. A broken engagement is after all, shattered dreams of romance, of a happy life together, a home, children and all that they had looked forward to. Kate is warm, giving and as ‘nice’ as they come. She's also a smiling, positive, fun person. But things "didn't work out," she says. That sums up the disconnect that they encountered through the run up to the wedding. When engagements are made, two young people are moving in a space of
62 youthincmag.com october-november 2016
upbeat happiness and anticipation to a loving future together- whether the choice is made by them or arranged by their families. So why does a thing that starts on a happy celebratory note have to meander to a sour end with the parties resorting to that final ultimatum. A breaking off of the whole association. In India, speaking on a general note, it’s quite often about differences of expectations regarding the wedding. The arrangements, the levels of grandeur, the material exchanges, more about the girl's side giving an outright dowry or other material gifts of considerable value that the grooms side might pass off with a casual “we are not asking, you are giving
everything to your beloved daughter! How pretty she looks in that silver BMW!" and such. No, this trend has not lessened with time. In fact the big Indian wedding is only growing bigger in an abstentious show that can often, be horrendously wasteful. It is a matter of izzat you see! (Of the groom's family of course) with almost the entire onus traditionally put on the bride's family to manage however they can. Izzat here being synonymous with wealth displayed! Let's put material issues or family differences aside. Even on a personality front, when two people are engaged with the mutually happy prospect to live in loving matrimony, why do they then break off? Often personality make-ups are so contrasting, tastes, tendencies, and character make-ups so contrary, that it is for the best that they go their very divergent ways. Infact an engagement is a period where you get to check exactly these aspects- before the long life till ‘death do us part’. Much better now than later. I know of a love story that seemed like a Mills and Boon romance! At least for six to eight months. They couldn’t live a minute without each other, everyone called them a match made in heaven. She had euphorically accepted him, untidy new-wave unshaven look and all. He had proudly flashed her around his friend’s circle as his victory trophy. A slow ennui crept in where he sought his buddies now and again. She could have passed it off as a man thing but it got her all het-up and demanding. There began the little spats. Then he got possessive of her every glance or word at any male. She too got suspicious of his time away. Vivid green jealousies arose. Spats and sweet conciliations did occur but insecurity is the sandiest cement to a relationship, and amid mammoth wars they replaced hate where love had been. It was an avoidable situation of immaturity that spoiled an opportunity at happiness. Another big destructive is wanting to improve your partner. His clothing style, her pretentious sense of fashion, his unshaven look, her unruly hair etc. But we often forget the precious love quotient in this bickering. You forget the totality of the loved one, the many loving shades and never let go of some aberrations. No matter how small, past hurts brought up without humour can forever create discord. You're creating a grove that you keep trudging through repeatedly. It becomes the pattern in behaviour. This could be beautifully sorted out with the desire to see your own part in the skirmish- even before you critique the partner’s part in it. What definitely works for me, is the giving and receiving of it all. You tend to grow together and into each other’s likes, it’s a slow process and you don’t even realize as it happens. So keep the faith if there are no glaring defects like abuse or violence. From a beginning of euphoria there is a period of rough weather where understanding each other takes time and a little love and effort. But most of all some faith. There needs to be a growing degree of learning and knowing some likes and desires. You
begin to use the winning way than the demanding way. You try to subtly show your partner what works for you and he indicates what works for him. Weigh the trivial issues with love -if love it is you want- fling out the trivialities. With the bedrock of that will to love, throw anger to the winds. Replace it with conversation, communication and the urgent desire to move forward with new learnings – armed with better resolutions to personal enrichment for the relationship and yourself. It is, after all, sad to so casually let go of an equation as rare and precious as love and a beautiful life of togetherness? Understanding things makes great amends. Empathy and a willingness to make it work are winners all the way. All else follows! Forgiveness, caring and a little largess of heart, with encouragement to seek harmony rather than dissent, is the way through a successful engagement which leads to a happy marriage. Armed with these, you could win over an enemy, let alone a somewhat recalcitrant fiancé. Go out and win him or her back with expansive love than wither with the psyche of hate. That’s my way to world peace. yi

will help you survive moving away from the security of your parents:
Be prepared
Before you take this life-changing decision, consider the thought of moving out carefully. Will you be able to do it? Or will you get homesick and run back home? Leaving home is expensive and can lead to bad budgeting so you will need to plan ahead. If you are a kind of person who
Leaving your parents and going on your own path is risky as it is exciting. Noel D’souza makes this new journey easier for you
never did a chore at home, this can be the time to start learning the essentials to survive living on your own. Prepare yourself mentally, isn’t going to be all that you wished for, it’s going to be hard and you might wish to go back home when things get to hard. Get ready for a life where each man is for himself! That includes cleaning up, washing, cooking, managing expenses and so on. If you are ready and skilled
to live on or decide to go with the flow then you are ready to take this next step in your life.
Do your research
Before actually taking this step in your lives, research on the place you want to move to. Don’t jump into it with your eyes closed. The place that you decide to shift to should be the solution to all your problems so pick a place that is close to your workplace or college. Check out the cost of the apartment and if you will be able to manage your monthly expenses and pay the rent at the same time without becoming broke. Look for places that are cheaper and compare the rates of other places you like so that you can get a good deal. Before actually buying the place, drive around to see what the area looks like. Find out if there are good affordable restaurants in that area because we all know that if we mess up cooking, we have a backup plan. Speak to people you know about your move, especially friends who have already done this or your elder sibling so that they can advise you on what’s best for you or not.
Find the right place
rent, food, clothing, insurance and also include the Friday night party or occasional movie time. Check out if your salary can support all this and plan accordingly. Figure out the total income per month and divide your expenses accordingly. Living paycheck to paycheck can be easy but it isn’t fun. Make sure you have a stable job with a good pay and will be able to manage everything without facing any fiascos.
Get to know the area
Get to know the area you are going to be living in for the rest of your life. It should fit your personality and the way you live. Speak to the people in your area and make some friends. Roam around the area in search of coffee shops, grocery shops and find your way back. If you are moving away from home to another country and settling down, then it might be important to know the culture and the language the people living there speak. The more you get to know the people and the places around the area the more comfortable you will be with the move.
Be open to new experiences
Set up multiple appointments before buying the place and making a deal. Look for a place you that is central to all the places you need to go to. This is going to be your home for the rest of your lives or even if it is temporary, you must have everything you need and a place that makes you feel good. Don’t just move in because it is the cheapest place or because you are renting a place with your friends. This apartment is going to be yours and if you are frustrated about living there, be sure it definitely won’t be a good experience.
If you haven’t lifted a finger at home this is going to be a whole new experience for you. Doing your own laundry, paying your bills , cleaning any and every part of the house, fixing anything that is broken, cooking simple meals are the skills you are going to acquire. Moving out of your parent’s place will make you learn new things that will help you survive. You will learn how to take responsibility and do things on your own. This can be really enriching and can help you grow as a person.
Draw up a budget plan
You won’t be able to have mommy’s home-cooked food after you return home from work. This may make you skip a meal or you may order fast food to get

through the night. Because let’s be real we are not going to cook after a long, tiring day. Eating out and surviving on junk may pose a threat to your health. You need to take charge of your health while choosing the food you eat.
Try to have fun and meet new people
Join the apartment building's gym or speak to your neighbour and get to know them. It is more fun to live with people you know. The more people know who you are, the more help you will get in your time of need. Moving away may make you lose your old friends. This is your chance to start afresh and begin to make new friends.
Communicate your problems
Speak to people if you are going through a problem. Even if it is your parents, call them up and speak it out. If you have a problem with your room-mate, you could probably sit down and have a talk with them, bringing up the issue to their notice. Maybe you don’t like them bringing friends over and partying while you are in your room, preparing for a presentation or you don’t like them taking your money and not returning the debt back. No matter what the issue is speak up! Apart from your room-mates you may have certain problems with the apartment itself. You might need to speak to your landlord and get the same sorted. Keeping communication is the key resolving issues with a much mature and better approach!
Keep in touch
You will be always reminded of home. No matter how much you try to deny it, you will miss your parents back home. The only solution to this is to go back home for a meal or your parent's birthday. Give them a call from time to time which will lighten up their mood. Trust me, you will feel the warmth and love, even if it is a call that lasted for 5 minutes. This connection is sure to drive away the blues of moving in alone! yi

health, better athletic performance, lower incidents with type 2 diabetes, improved cognitive health, mood and also increased energy. A daily consumption of coffee may lower the risk of diseases, such as: diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, Parkinson disease and some forms of cancer. Coffee is rich in antioxidants and gives up to 60 per cent of the recommended daily dietary antioxidants. It enhances mental alertness and the ability to concentrate due to its caffeine content. Taking coffee in moderate consumption of not more than four cups in a day is really of immense benefits to
human health. Research shows patients who drink one to two cups a day are 20 per cent less likely to die prematurely from heart damage, than those who never touch coffee. Coffee, the go to drink in the mornings for millions of us is being studied not only for its stimulating properties, but for some more permanent effects too. The 2014 The Alzheimer’s European Congress discovered that drinking 3-5 cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of getting Alzheimer's by 20%-60%! A study done at Harvard discovered that drinking 4 cups of coffee daily can decrease depression by 20% in women. 4 cups of coffee daily also reduces the risk of suicide by 53% because it is said to increase mood, productivity and overall happiness. Studies have shown that caffeine boosts the metabolic rate aiding in burning off that fat by 3-11%, that’s crazy. It can also increase the burning of fat in 10% of obese individuals and 29% in fit individuals. The only thing is long term coffee drinkers is that the burning of fat is not a forever thing and will diminish over time as our body only recognizes it as a fat burner for a short period of time, not to be taken as a sole fat burner. Good exercise and diet are crucial to fat burning as well. If you want to enjoy the benefits, don’t take it on impulse like a student, who wants to stay awake to read at night for an examination. Also, some people can be very sensitive to its caffeine content, therefore, it is advisable to watch out how it affects your body.

Beauty
Bid adieu to barely-there beauty trends, the fun, magical and timeless rainbow is here!
P
romoting an independence of spirit and attitude, rainbow beauty trends are here to fill our lives with vibrancy. From rainbow eyelashes to rainbow nails, the trend is everything that will cast your mind back to your school art classes. We chalk out different ways the rainbow trend has taken over.
Rainbow hair
Rainbow hair has become one of this year’s hottest beauty trends. Everyone from teen girls to grown women are opting for rainbow colored locks, and it’s no wonder – it looks so cool, so summery, and so bright – who wouldn’t want to be surrounded with the colors they love? Perhaps some do it to represent certain things that have meaning to them, and others do it because they love the colors they choose. Rainbow hair is all about having fun. You can actually opt for just about any color you want, and combine them with other colors as well, without worrying too much about whether or not they suit you. That would be like holding a box of Crayola markers up to your hair and asking yourself, “Which marker would look better in my hair?” The point here is to love the colors you choose and just do it! If you are combining more than one color with another, just be sure those two colors go together well before beginning the application, such as light pink and light blue, fuchsia and teal, or sea-green and lavender purple.
Rainbow lips
With bright coloured lips having a moment, you have all the reasons to go outlandish with rainbow lips! To begin your rainbow lips, keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be like a real rainbow with primary and basic colors. Don’t be afraid to use candy colors and metallics. Also, there are many ways to do a rainbow lip. You can do horizontal or vertical stripes. So start by getting a very small tiny lip brush and your eye-shadow palette.
Rainbow eyelashes
The whole rainbow beauty trend kick-started with these hard-to-miss rainbow eyelashes. All the reasons for us to hunt around for different coloured mascaras and apply each one only to a section of your lashes to create the effect. If you can’t find the coloured mascaras that you need, you can always make DIY ones using clear mascara and coloured eye-shadow pigments. If you’re going to do it at home, it’s best to start by putting on a clear mascara as a base and then swiping on various shades of mascara on your upper and lower lashes. Not down for all that work? You can just buy a rainbow lash pack or just get some fun fakies! These are obviously meant for more of a party look. You can also check with your beauty therapist if they have experience doing coloured lashes. If nothing else works, get fake extension eyelashes! yi 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 69

Michl- Die Trying
‘Do we swim or do we sink, ‘cause there’s still a long long way to go.’ Michl is a Los Angeles based singer and songwriter. Die Trying is a beautiful compilation by him. The song has everything - good lyrics, background music, and rhythm. You’ll find yourself humming to it after just the first two times. The track continues the thread of matching cold, atmospheric synth washes with impressive vocal gymnastics to devastating effect, but honing them further with an grand chorus.
Broods- Bridges
Sleeping at LastSaturn
Sleeping at Last is a lesser known alternative rock band from Wheaton, Illinois and their music is magical, to say the least. Saturn is our favourite song from their album called Atlas: Space I and Space II which consists of songs named after each planet. Every song is unique and beautiful enough to give you goosebumps. Green tea or wine, you’ll love lounging to Sleeping at Last after a rough day. So make sure you don't give this one a miss and bask in the beats!
Broods is a music duo of two brothers from Nelson, New Zealand. Bridges is the lead single from New Zealand duo Broods‘ self-titled EP, also appearing on their debut studio album Evergreen. This song is sure to pump up the energy in any room while still not loud enough to make it annoying. Beer and Scrabble on a Saturday night? Hit play to this song and trust us, you just can’t go wrong with the ambience.
M83- Wait
M83 is a French electronic band led by Anthony Gonzalez. Before you lose interest, we’d like to establish that it isn’t EDM. Wait is an exquisite song by M83 which is sure to boost your spirits while also calming you down. The YouTube video of the song is just as captivating as the song itself. Wait is the kind of song one uses to shut out the world. So plug your earphones in, put your head back, and let this song do its trick. The song has been one of the favourites and has garnered a lot of popularity due to its vibrant beats.
Coldplay- Life in Technicolour II
Coldplay, the popular UK based band can’t not feature on this list. While the band became popular since it began commercialising its music, we love the classics just as much. Life in Technicolour II is one of its lesser known songs. It’s a classic Coldplay- captivating music, amazing YouTube music video, warming lyrics. You do not want to miss this one while creating your ‘Chill’ playlist. 2016 october-november youthincmag.com 71

THE BOSTON BUTT Cuisine: American Bites and Booze: Kala Ghoda’s latest entrant on the food circuit transported us to the Prohibition Era. With vintage interiors, brass cutlery and framed posters from back in the day, we knew we were off to a good start. From their drinks menu, their signature Curry Scented B**** and Que Pasa are a perfect medley of sweet and spicy flavours with a good hit of alcohol. They went down perfectly with the Smoked Calamari and the St Louis Style Slow Smoked Pork Ribs which were juicy and had a subtle smoky flavour. We also tried the New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimps which were cooked to perfection. Their Veg Bourgeois P.I.G. with mushrooms, sweet chilli jam and mascarpone served on house made brioche buns and the very cheesy Bloom Bread had us reaching for more. For mains, we had the Buffalo Tenderloin Steak which was cooked to a perfect medium and served with a pink pepper sauce and crunchy house fries. Their Chicken Philly Cheesesteak and Lamb Half Pounder too left us wanting more. To end on a sweet note, the Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie that’s served with house-made Ice-Cream, is neither overly sweet nor heavy. Fab or Drab: The restaurant with its signature line of cocktails and smoked meats are enough reasons why you should visit. The reasonable prices and the vast menu will keep you coming back for more. IT’S FUSSION Cuisine: North Indian, Italian, Mexican, Thai Bites and Booze: It’s Fussion is not just another vegetarian restaurant in Mumbai. The joint in Powai, has taken vegetarian food to all new levels. The restaurant has classy interiors with colourful lights in mason jars, adding a fun vibe. A good way to start your meal is with a Watermelon Margarita, because, watermelon juice and tequila, need we say more? The Mango Mint Lassi and Gauva Juice served in a chilli rimed glass are good options as well. Their Wild Mushroom Cappuccino and Cream of Broccoli and Cheese soups are as comforting as they are tasty. A must try are the Mexican Shots- layers of beans, salsa, sour cream and guacamole in a shot glass served with tortilla chips. The Bharwan Zucchini stuffed with Paneer was creamy and tasty, though we wished the Shakarkand Ke Tikke had more spice. The Baked Exotic Veggies with plenty of cheese went down well as did the creamy Risotto Verdure, though less tomato would have been nice. An interesting addition to the menu is sizzlers. We chose the Indo-China which was a rather ordinary serve of paneer chilli, vegetable Manchurian and Schezwan rice and noodles. From their selection of desserts we loved the Fussion Millefeuilles with crisp khari, coconut and chocolate parfait. Fab or Drab: It’s Fussion is still worth the visit for their interesting cocktails and dishes. ADDRESS: 1st FLOOR, HAIKO PLACE, HIRANANDANI GARDENS, POWAI, MUMBAI

The Good Wife Cuisine: Italian Bites and Booze: We love a good single malt and when we heard of the Malts and Jazz night held at The Good Wife every Thursday, we just had to check it out. Held in association with United Spirits, we were greeted by Nicholas Ord, Diageo Reserve Brand Ambassador, who guided us through the night. The nights are themed and we were lucky to be at the Roll In The Barely night. After a detailed, yet fun walkthrough of the different Scot regions and the whiskeys each produce, we got down to the drinks. Our first drink, a Singleton was well paired with the Thai Prawn Kataifi. The Glenkinchie was perfect with Smoked Scarmoza Tostadas as was the Cragganmore with the Assorted Peppers Bruschetta. Off their regular menu, their signature Wolf Of BKC is a good mix of whiskey, pineapple and cardamon. We also loved their The Good Wif,a fruity vodka based cocktail. For mains, the Five Spice Crispy Duck Breast is a good option and is tender and juicy. A good way to wrap up your meal is with the Dulce De Leche and Deconstructed Nutella Cheesecake which was not overly sweet but maintained that rich Nutella flavour we loved along with creaminess of vanilla ice cream. Another favourite was the Vanilla Panacotta that had a rich vanilla flavour, was perfectly wobbly and the fresh fruity berry compote was a refreshing addition. Fab or Drab: While we found it hard to critique The Good Wife, we wished the Prawn Kataifi were less oily and service was smoother. Wonder Woman is UN Brand Ambassador For Gender Equality
At first we thought it was a joke, but turns out the news is true. DC Comic’s legendary character Wonder Woman was recently appointed as the brand ambassador for gender equality. This comes just weeks after sources confirmed that the fictional character was also a champion of LGBTQ rights. Although we’re huge fans of Wonder Woman, what we can’t get over is how a fictional character will speak up for gender equality. Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary is also being honoured by the US Postal Service with the issue of a series of four Wonder Woman stamps. Another comic site, the Mary Sue also said that her character is an easily recognizable symbol of what women can become once free.

In order to be eligible for the lucky draw, one has to earn points by completing tasks on the Global Citizen app. Robin Hood much?
Kim Kardashian’s Robbery
The news of Kim Kardashian being robbed in Paris made waves around the world. The mother of two had a gun to her head and begged for her life after five masked men wearing police uniforms forced a night concierge at the Hôtel de Pourtalès to bring them to her where she was alone in bed. The 35-year-old’s wrists were zip-tied and duct-taped, and she was grabbed by the ankles at which point, she told the police, she thought she was going to be raped. The men did not speak English, but kept saying “ring, ring,” she told police. After she told them where to find the massive new diamond a gift from her husband Kanye West, that she’d been showing off on social media they duct-taped her mouth.
America's biggest stars appear in an Anti-Trump Video
Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Leslie Odom Jr, and many other famous stars make an appearance on this moving video emphasizing America’s duty and right to vote for the correct candidate. The video asks important questions like, "Do we really want to give nuclear weapons to a man whose signature move is firing things?” It alludes to Trump when referring to him as a "a racist, abusive coward who could permanently damage the fabric of our society”. It is a commendable initiative by the actors who've chosen to put to use their ability to impact their audience in a very positive way. If Iron Man tells you not to vote for Trump, you do not vote for Trump. Period.
Brangelina is no more
The Hollywood ‘goals’ couple has filed for a divorce, and we’re heartbroken. No sooner did the news break out was the Internet flooded with memes on Brad Pitt’s ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston’s reaction to it. Aniston apparently dismissed it by saying, “It’s karma”. In 2011 when the couple got together, we labeled them ‘goals,’ and now that they’re splitting, the world is refusing to believe in love. The Madame Tussauds museum has already split up their mannequins and people are now wondering how the former couple is going to split their assets and more importantly, their children. Can’t just divide by two in the latter, can you, Brangelina?
