e have turned 5 and proud to say that you are holding a very special issue in your hands. Today, I invite you to feast your eyes and warm your soul with this special edition. As tradition goes, each anniversary issue is curated by a group of bright and diligent students, who gain firsthand experience in the world of publishing and at the same time, lend the spark that we need to carry on the good work. I still remember our first issue so vividly; how we interviewed the first set of people, set about with the design and layouts till late in the night and finally, sitting eagerly at the printers to get the first copy, hot off the press. It has been an extremely exhilarating time, as I have learnt so much in this journey and met such inspiring people, learning about all the fascinating things that they have done in their young lives. It never ceases to amaze me how many options the youth have today to choose from, and yet, many of them unable to make decisions or are unhappy with their lives. So, I really admire those who have a clear vision and are working hard to give their all to become who they want to be and get where they want to be. This comes naturally to some and not so naturally to the others. So, like the 5 elements of nature - Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Ether, we showcase these young achievers, who in their own realms have made a contribution, a difference and set off to their paths of glory. Each has had their own struggle - some bigger and harder than the others. But what matters today is how they inspire you with their experiences in the cover story ‘Power to the Five’. Keeping up with the times we are creating more video content on our YouTube channel, as a means to provide an engaging and interactive platform to our online readers. We also have an ambitious app in the works, which will be launched soon and will make it easier for our readers to get push notifications and relevant content anytime, anywhere and without searching for it. Each and every member of our fantastic team has worked really hard to make all this happen, and so a big thanks to Team Youth Inc. who are helping shape the future of this glorious nation.

Devi Dang is a fifteen-year-old hardworking and dedicated student who loves the arts and the humanities. She aspires to master the art of filmmaking to conquer millions of hearts with her films. Dang is also a dancer, who has now taken up her long lost love of writing to push her limits. With an ambition to achieve fluent writing, she decided to intern with Youth Incorporated. Addicted to the mainstream masala movies and watching cricket while cheering on top of her voice for Team India, Dang firmly believes in social responsibility.

Priyanka Iyer, a 15-year-old girl, approaches her interests with great fervour. She was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, but moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when she was only a year old. She then moved to Shanghai, China at the age of four and lived there for 10 years. She returned to Mumbai when she was 14 years old and has been living there for approximately a year and a half. Despite living abroad for most her life, she has maintained connection with her culture and traditions. She reads the Gita and loves different languages.

Shahen Pardiwala is a passionate Youtuber, who often uploads humorous videos on his channel, and is a regular on the weekly YouTube series Me Thinks. After the eight grade he has been homeschooled and gave his boards at 14. He loves to write and often pens down scripts for short films. Everything he experiences, either is on paper, his channel or social media profiles. Currently, he is exploring the art of scriptwriting, editing and filmmaking. He has also anchored book launches.

Mallica Patel

Mallica Patel is a student of B.com at KC College, and made the decision only a month ago to change her choice of career from chartered accountancy to journalism, something that sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always wanted to pursue. Apart from reading, she is also a YouTube fanatic who can surf videos for hours. In her free time, she loves watching movies and catching up on the latest shows. Mallica is also an active blogger and she aspires to become a humor columnist someday.

Binita Singh Binita is a student of KC College pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree. An avid reader and a compulsive writer, she changed her decision of becoming a doctor to answer her passion for literature. A movie buff and a perfume aficionado, Binita spends most of her time reading romance and fantasy novels. A self-acclaimed poet, she usually writes poems laced with tragedy.

For Kesar Majethia, reading the latest Jeffery Archer novel and sipping a cup of coffee would be the ideal weekend. She often juggles between school, piano courses, vocal training sessions and volunteering. When she first heard about Youth Incorporated Magazine from her school, her initial response was, "This opportunity is for gifted writers. So, that’s not me," but after flipping through the magazine she regained confidence.

Burdened with the unappealing sobriquet of ‘Dictionary’ from a young age (which she finds prudent to point out, refers to the extent of her vocabulary), Alongside participating in MUN and TEDx events. Her foray into literature began probably with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and spiralled into an unparalleled obsession of epic proportions in the form of a nouveau-age mish-mash of every genre possible.

Leo Oommen

Gently falls the Bakula was the first book she ever read and that was the beginning of her love affair with books. Leo is a huge fan of Sidney Sheldon books and loves reading books from the genre of crime and mystery.Sometimes she’s like the Orwellian Talk about literature, movies or T.V shows and you can always find Leo in conversation about the best movies and T.V shows to watch.

Janvi Manchanda Janvi Manchanda is a 19-year-old lazy, animal lover. Two years ago she was adopted as a human mom by a little kitten named meow. She’s a third year BMM student of Lala Lajpat Rai College and wishes to be a journalist. Someday she wants to be that crazy grandmother who makes things awkward, with her teenage stories, at the dining table during family dinners.

WORLD KTI’S MODEL FRANCHISEE CENTRE TO OFFER COURSES ACROSS DIFFERENT TRADES AND JOB ROLES.

 Kohinoor Technical Institute Pvt. Ltd. (KTI) signed its first business partner in Mumbai at Marol, Andheri (E).  Students at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay have developed ORCA, India’s fastest racing car. Headed by Rushabh Kapasi, a 4th Year engineering student, team ORCA comprises of nearly 75 students from more than eight engineering streams.  ORCA has a record breaking acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 3.47 seconds and is faster than sports cars made by Tesla, Porsche and Audi.  ORCA will be participating in the Formula student (FS) UK competition in July which is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition organized by Institution of Mechanical Engineers(IMechE).  The IIT-B team have been participating since five years and are the only ones to have received the FS award for Design Improvement for three consecutive years. The IIT-B team have been winning the Formula Student Award by IMechE for being the best non-UK team for the past 2 years.  Orca is the fifth electric car manufactured by IIT Bombay’s racing team and uses a battery pack of 95 cells, which will deliver continuous power of 80 kilowatt.  "Not only is its acceleration a record, it is the first time we have a special steel-frame chassis with carbonfibre manufactured body, which not only reduces the weight but also stabilises the car at high speed", said Rushabh Kapasi while speaking to the press. IACS COLLABORATES WITH JADAYPUR UNIVERSITY FOR AN INTEGRATED PHD PROGRAMME IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE

 Indian Association for Cultivation of Sciences (IACS) and the Jadaypur University collaborate with the aim of providing students with IACS’s research facilities and high end apparatuses without having to seek courses abroad.  10 students will be selected through an interview and admission test for the programme and begin in August 2016. Selected students will be provided a monthly stipend of Rs. 12000 for two years.  The teaching team at the University and students can use the sophisticated research equipment (like an X-ray refractometer, high resolution XDR among others) for 25% of the fees imposed on outsiders. “For the selected students and the faculty, this would be a rare opportunity to exploit the best available facilities in the country," said Soumitra Sengupta, dean (academics), IACS.  Apart from the research instruments, the integrated MSc course will also provide exposure to IACS’ faculty research. The selected students will be a part of joint research projects conducted by the Jadaypur University and IACS.

THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS TO THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS

 The Rhodes Scholarships has supported exceptional post graduate students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. It is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international scholarship programme in the world.  The Rhodes Trust provides the Rhodes Scholarships in partnership with Second Century Founder, John McCall MacBain and other generous benefactors. BSC. AVIATION DEGREE FROM MUMBAI UNIVERSITY

 The University of Mumbai has signed an MoU with the Bombay Flying Club to start a 3-year degree course for aviation studies which is expected to start in 20162017.  The Bombay Flying club has trained air crew, who are now working as captains and engineers for domestic and international airlines such as Air India, Jet Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Spice Jet, Indigo, Paramount, Kingfisher Airlines among others. Annual fee for the course is Rs1.15 lakhs.  As of now, pilots and other personnel have been exposed to a rigorous hands-on experience. Introduction of this degree course will provide the appropriate scientific background in terms of quality and content.  'Interactive Multimedia Content' ensures that the complex subjects associated with aviation and aeronautical training, are taught to the students effectively. BFC also supports Testing Assessment and Grading System (TAGS).  For eligibility, the candidate should be 17 years of age and must have passed the HSC Examination with a focus in Physics and Mathematics. Also, he/she must carry out the Class II medical test before admission.  To obtain B.Sc. in Aviation degree, a student has to pass University Examinations, remain medically fit and obtain CPL from DGCA. VOWEL IT UP On the occassion of our magazine's 5th anniversary, Brinda Mehra introduces you to the five raging issues that are plaguing are country, all of which signify the crucial five vowels of the English language.

ive is a wonderful number – the number of fingers and toes we have, the number of immediate Simpsons, the number of Chanel’s most coveted perfume and the meter in which Shakespeare wrote his sonnets. There are also five Great Lakes, five weekdays, five Marx brothers and five scales in music. Incidentally, five was the age where I experienced my first crushing disappointment in the form of an unwieldy Rottweiler attempting to mark his territory and peeing on everything in sight – including my brand new blue pinafore dress. Five is also the number of vowels present in the English language, and usually the first set of letters that children learn while growing up. Vowels are characterized as sounds that require a ‘comparatively open configuration of the vocal tract and form a key part of language’. In the spirit of this versatile number and the openness associated with vowels, as we celebrate Youth Incorporated’s 5th anniversary, we focus on the five vowels and associate each of them with a trend present in the modern day world. In previous anniversary issues, Youth Incorporated picked up pertinent causes and featured them. This time, as it turns five and the world is at a risk of tilting off its axis as it changes at an alarming speed, we have decided that there is no way that we can encompass all that we want to explore under the umbrella of one cause. So, we bring you snippets of discoveries, opinions and other various little bits of information coagulated into pieces under the concept of Five. In essence, our writers attempt to fit a philosophy book worth of information into six hundred words in the frantic hopes that you will understand what they are trying to say. With topics that range from the demystification of the desire present behind the human need for the existence of Utopia or a deeper understanding of agnostic atheism, we hope that we have provided some clarity to you so that you don’t get swept away in the crazy world we live in, hoping that it will enrich in many ways and help you in your daily life. yi

AGNOSTIC ATHEISM

The word ‘Atheist’ and ‘Agnostic’ are easily one of the most misunderstood words today, with people casually throwing it around in a conversation. Leo Oomen explores their quintessential meaning and the difference between the two nouns

ost youngsters today turn to atheism since it seems like a growing trend or simply, to embrace their inner rebel. Now you may be wondering whether by reading this would it affect your religious beliefs. Certainly not! It is intended to raise consciousness of how different beliefs exist, and that people have choices to select from being a theist to an atheist and even have wider options like agnostic or agnostic atheist. Many people do not know that they have choices, they are brought up in a religion or they are scared into following rituals and traditions in the name of it. Some people are at a stage where they aren’t sure of what they believe in, they do not know whether they believe in God. Robert M. Prisig in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance said, ‘When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called a Religion.’ It is necessary for us to clear the notion in our minds that being an atheist is insane and that they cannot live happily or have morals and an intellectually fulfilled life. With every damage, death and destruction being blamed on religion, it is time we think about whether religion is the root of that happens. One particular thing cannot be the root of all that happens in the society. Open-minded people or those whose childhood indoctrination about religion was not too insidious or whose native intelligence did not agree to bind into a particular set of thoughts would give it a thought before coming to any conclusion. For beginners, it is important to know what being an atheist means. It means a person who lacks faith in God, or believes that there is no God.

An agnostic either believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God or is noncommittal on the issue. In fact, there are different types of atheists/agnostics in the world like Intellectual atheist/agnostic, who seek all information and knowledge on atheism; seeker agnostic, who are unsure about God’s existence but keep an open mind and recognises human limits of knowledge; Ritual atheist are those who follow religious rituals but do not believe in God. Agnostic atheist are atheistic because they do not hold a belief in the existence of any deity and agnostic because they claim that the existence of a deity is either unknowable in principle or currently unknown in fact. In such cases, it would be wrong to make assumptions that agnosticism and atheism are two entirely separate things. The conundrum of the atheist-agnostic is of great importance for both sides of the “God argument.” The biggest flaw when talking about being a believer and a non-believer is that the religious side focus on the intellectual side of God, often losing the argument. Instead, they should encourage people to try it for themselves, rather than forcing it on them. One of the most important things is that if you are a non-believer you shouldn’t pick fights over someone who has different views by highlighting the ugly part of religion and if you are a believer, do not preach people about the scripture you read or the experience you have. On both sides, promoting goodness and honesty is essential to maintain a balance. he next time a “What do you do for a living?” question pops up, the answer to receive an agreeable nod from the person may not just require the standard “I’m a lawyer” or CEO or a surgeon. Over the years, employment has diversified itslef into a myriad new forms of which, a significant handful of jobs will appaul you with the incomes they have to offer. Let’s look at a few of these quirky jobs that will not only make your resume stand out, but also your bank account. EMBALMER Seems like the unfortunate time of grieviences is increasingly proving to be lucrative for certain people. An Embalmer or Mortician earns approximately $46, 840 (citation) on a yearly basis. This job involves everything from transporting the body, to preparing it for cremation. Working with a licensed funeral home and having some experience is all that’s required to earn significantly well. PROFESSIONAL SNUGGLER Yes, you read it correctly. This job literally involves cuddling the client for a certain duration to make them feel comfortable. A company called ‘The Snuggle Buddies’ pays its employees $40 per hour for this job. Astonishingly, professional snugglers are becoming renown for the reduced level of depression and anxiety amongst working class citizens. ENTERTAINMENT ON A CRUISE We all know that tourism has surged significantly in the past decade. However, with the increase in luxury travel, cruises are trending as new hotspots for relxation. y mother is fond of telling me that at my age, the idea of a cell phone that could actually fit in your skinny jeans was an inexistent entity - mostly because they neither had cell phones nor skinny jeans. It does make me feel glad that I was born in this century. When I was younger, the extent of my foray into science fiction began and ended at Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which I admit is not exactly the most plausible thing in the universe. But, as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang flew, so did my imagination and I envisioned a world where (predictably) robots did my homework, donuts mass produced themselves and cars flew. While this fantasy was inspired by a heavy dose of Enid Blyton in the mix, it is undeniable that most of us dreamt of this possibility sometime in our childhoods and perhaps we may see this childhood dream come to fruition – like many of our science fiction writers, who it seems, at times, can predict the future. In 1914, H.G. Wells (often hailed as the father of modern science fiction) wrote The World Set Free, where he envisaged a world where bombs exploded continuously, using radioactivity as a power source and proliferation of WMD’s occurred – a direct contrast to Robert Millikan, the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1923, who stated that ‘There is no likelihood man can ever tap the power of the atom.’ Fast forward roughly a hundred years and you arrive in 2016 A.D. – an era where nuclear weapons are selling like hot cakes. Moreover, the atom is no longer a tiny, invisible particle known to a few, but now the bane of an entire sixth grade generation’s existence. It is rather mystifying how quickly the mysteries of life are unravelling. Every single day the world discovers something new – an

ancient stone tablet detailing the Etruscan pantheon of Gods in Italy or the presence of hobbit-like human skeletons in Indonesia, allowing us to gain a deeper insight into our past. Sometimes, the discoveries prove past theories and lead us towards the future, intent on demystifying the fields of physics and chemistry – like the Higgs Boson particle or the discovery of gravitational waves at breakneck speed. We’ve been defying the idea of impossible even before it was possible. This century has seen some great things – a flower being grown in space, gay rights, a red sea dragon, EDM and many more. In the future, it will also not cease to amaze us through events such as the 2025 Mission to Mars and perhaps a female US President. The world is adapting and moving at an incredibly fast speed and far too often we get caught up in its dizzying whirlwind and are unable to appreciate just how far mankind has evolved. In the Stone Age, our biggest boon was fire – in the 21st century, Wi-Fi depravation is steps away from becoming a crime. Not everything is peachy though – we’re still battling hate, prejudice, intolerance and inequality. But we’ve come a long way from where we were even ten years ago and I take that as a good omen for the future. We’ve advanced so far when it comes to the sciences, the humanities and the world in general – there is no need for humans to stop trying to advance emotionally and socially too. Perhaps what strikes me the most is that once upon a time, Dr. Lee DeForest thought that man would never reach the moon and now, we’re going through solar systems finding gas giants 3,700 light years away like I go through erasers. ven though Salt-n-Pepa in their hit single ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ urged people worldwide to talk about sex, nobody really wants to talk about sex, do they? What is sex? A hushed conversation, a discreet ‘shhh’ a fast forwarded scene or a censored scene in a film. The aforementioned are all the actions we associate sex with. Of course, as we grow older and get sucked into the whirling tornado of hormones, the definition and explanation clears itself, and we get to see (or experience) sex for what it really is. What happens after that? We continue to talk in hushed tones, the awkwardness reduces just a little bit and many of the other things remain the same except, you now know what is really happening. What makes sex such a taboo in this country? What is it about it which makes us squirm, cringe and glare at the person who just, mentioned the word? Isn’t the need to have sex as equivalent to eating or sleeping? Then why do people stress on the virginity of the sexes before marriage? Why do some girls go through vaginal binding just so that their husbands are assured of their virginity on the first night of marriage? Most importantly, how long are people going to dodge the sex talk? Long enough till their children learn about it from sources which are horrid enough to scar their childhood. it’s high time we accept the fact that as humans, all of us are sexual creatures. All of us crave for sex and well... some of us have it too! We need to make sure that the next generation of children do not grow up considering sex as a ‘dirty thing’ or a scene in a movie which needs to be fast forwarded. Why is it that the censor board still thinks that reducing a kissing scene by 5 seconds or by refusing to show a kissing scene all together will make any difference? Remember that steamy scene in the latest Bond movie? I don’t remember it too, because it was never there! Or take the film, 50 shades of Grey for example. Banning the film only further proves our non-acceptance of sex. What people don’t understand is that at this stage of technology and reach no sex scene is going unappreciated; no kissing scene is being cut, because everyone has their way of accessing them. It was only recently that a Pakistani board had an issue with an intimate scene which was shown in an Indian daily soap calling it ‘indecent’. An Indian daily soap usually refrains from showing sex scenes in entirety and if they even decided to, we all can imagine how minuscule and irrelevant it must have been. So how can something as small as that affect an entire country? The truth is that, as the creators of Kama Sutra, none of us are averse to sex, but we love to put up a façade which helps us protect our ‘culture’, because apparently, celebrating Valentine’s Day impinges upon our cultural mores. Further, beating young couples in parks works wonders as it encourages the act of not falling in love, because in a country where the front page is filled with news of murder, rape and terrorism, who needs love anyway? Watching pornography at the Parliament is even better because it upholds the maxim ‘Work is worship’ So maybe it is time for us to let go of the façade, because beneath the facade lies, perverted babas or self-styled godmen who believe in a unique form of imparting wisdom, or the thousands of rapists who were unfortunately never taught the concept of consensual sex or the Khap Panchayat who think that Chinese food causes sexual tension in one’s body and thus causes the poor victim of the tension to rape! Maybe it’s high time that we stopped blaming the western culture and media for all the possible problems our country faces, because for a fact, India ranks third in pornography viewership worldwide – not very far from America which ranks first. yi

I don’t think so. In today’s world, where crime rates are higher than ever, and man has defiled most of the earth for his needs, it is quite difficult, or rather, impossible, to form a society that is utopian. During the early 19th century, many utopian societies arose in England and America, but sadly, perished due to various reasons. A place where the sexes were equal, religion was everything, and all statuses of the society worked together, sounded very much idyllic in paper, but foolhardy in reality. While none of us in the 21st century are onto the idea of becoming the next Shakers (a particular group of Utopians), we sure seem to be following their ideals. We portray a perfect lifestyle on social media and in society, but fail to live that life in reality. Even with all the campaigns set up for women rights and equality, and people pretending that they truly are accepting of these radical changes, the mindset still hasn’t changed. Women are still seen as the weaker sex by a vast majority of people. Another example of this failed idealism is social media.We all see girls and boys posing for the numerous pictures just to upload it on the Internet, showing their perfect life with their perfect friends and family. But

while each of us does the same thing, only we know how much of the portrayed paradise holds true. Zara, Forever 21 and Calvin Klein – I think I’m being blinded by brands. The same Mercedes’ and BMWs cruising the roads. iPhones in every other hand. All of us, are practically emulators of each other. This hunger for perfection; the craving that has driven the folk of every town, city, state, country to fit in the crowd that is based loosely on the theme of acceptance: a theme, that is very much abstract. This game of charades has now become our life, the game of pretence, the game of denial. So much of our money is spent on lifestyle and appearances, as discussed in a particular Buzzfeed article. All of us, wanting the same things, working for the same things, doing the same things. Sounds like a severe case of Dollys (Dolly was the first clone to have been made) We’re all smiles, handshakes and hugs, but we fail to make real talk. Stringent laws have been put up since ages, and yet the Orlando shootings occurred. Tight security had been enforced and yet 22-year old singer, Christina Grimmie was shot in the head by a jilted fan. What sort of a perfect society are we claiming to live in, if we can’t even protect our own heads, literally. How can a society be perfect when the basic aspects of it do not have a solid foundation to it? Are we going to live in denial all our lives? United Arab Emirates University Placing in the 421-430 bands of the global rankings, United Arab Emirates University ranks 6th in the Arab region ranking. It’s based in the city of Al Ain in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, and is the oldest university in the country – though still relatively young – having been established in 1976. Its alumni community includes many powerful leaders in the fields of government and business. It has partnerships with Cornell University, Stanford University, and Yale University, where some teachers from those universities teach at Peking University. Peking University is a centre for research and teaching, especially in scientific fields. Tsinghua University - Beijing Also situated in Beijing, Tsinghua University is ranked 11th in Asia and 47th in the world. Like Peking University, it is another member of C9 league, and its MBA program is ranked 2nd in the world. China’s last two presidents studied in Tsinghua University, making it renowned throughout Asia. With approximately 26,000 students, Tsinghua has become a significant institution for research and engineering. Fudan University - Shanghai Fudan University has 4 campuses all based in Shanghai. This fringe benefit is rapidly gaining momentum amongst young workers, who prefer an informal and easygoing work environment. The tormenting 8-hour regime does nothing but drain employees of energy and the will to work. With flexible hours, employees are finding it easier to achieve a healthy work-life balance and socialize more. Flexible working hours allow workers to pursue hobbies and extra courses, which is beneficial for the employee as well as the employer in the long term. Flexitime has a variety of different options that allow all types of employees to reap the benefits. The most established and widely used option is job sharing. This option permits two workers to work half a shift, which adds up to the hours of one full-time employee. This option often requires a smooth relationship between the two workers and effective communication. The second option is for seasonal jobs in industries such as tourism and event management firms. Workers decide to work longer hours during the season and then take the equivalent time off during off-season. This often works for employees who have other jobs or young workers who are completing their majors. The third option allows workers to work for a reduced number of hours. This option is contingent on how a worker’s output is measured. If the firms can manage to measure the output effectively, they are able to resort to reduced number of hours. Many employers

are growing comfortable with this option as workers are more engaged in their work. The headquarters of Generation X If we time-travel back to the late 20th century, the average corporate office was filled with a myriad of halogen lights, ivory walls and the massive noticeable difference between tiny cubicles and large corner offices. Everyone was instantly aware of their place in the social hierarchy of an organization. Fast-forward back to the 21st century, aren’t we fortunate to have the colorful and creative offices of Google and Facebook, that are the modern day versions of Disneyland for tech geeks? Executives have realized that workplaces and offices have become much more than a ‘place to come to work’. It has become a USP for certain companies and, in some cases, even industries. Be it Google’s brightly colored campus with tennis courts, sleeping pods and the infamous Google office slide or the Infosys bowling alley, workplaces are now becoming every worker’s desired second home. To match the comfort and positive atmosphere of workplaces, numerous organizations are now conducting events and workshops for their employees to keep them motivated. For instance, the internationally acclaimed corporate social networking organization LinkedIn has been hosting ‘Bring In Your Parents’ day to connect the work lives of employees with their personal lives. Not only did this event bridge the gap between employees and their parents, the initiative came across as a remarkable and rewarding gesture for employees. LinkedIn is not alone; companies such as Quicken Loans offer their employees free tickets to home games as the company owns the renowned Cleveland Cavaliers. Other than events, the overall company culture is evolving as the relationships between employee and employer are becoming more casual. Some gestures have been as magnanimous as a Chinese conglomerate named TiensGroup took 6,400 employees for an all-expenses paid vacation to France. The occasional oblivion There is no doubt that the workforce of this century is growing unrecognizable to the previous generation. However, amidst all of the euphoria of comfort and freedom, employees tend to forget the importance of producing quality work and working effectively as a team. It is recommended that despite remote working and flexible hours, remote workers should pay seldom visits to the office and stay connected with the physical environment of a workplace. With more fringe benefits comes more competition. Therefore, it is important to deliver your best performance regardless of supervision. We like to be on one side, and look at the other." - Douglas Adams, Mostly Harmless Keeping in theme with our 5th anniversary issue, we wanted to come up with something symbolic related to the number five. We thought of a lot of things, until we came up with the five elements of nature. Nothing plays a more influential and decisive role in our lives than these elements. The water in our glasses, the air we breathe in, the land we stand on, the soothing fire and, most importantly, aether. We look around at everything and they are a product of these five core elements. It is essential that we understand why these elements are connected to our existence in this universe. The answer lies deeper than its tangible significance. Lets talk about the earth. In the context, earth isn't just restricted to land, but also extends to all that consists of the earth as a whole. Why is earth such a dynamic symbol? Consider its tangible abilities and we see that it grows life. It nurtures the living and displays an ability of empathy. There are not many inanimate substances which come with the ability of giving back what they get. This is what makes the earth exceptional. From this roots its metaphysical significance. To diverse cultures, earth is a congruent symbol of uniformity, stability and reliability. Its metaphysical significance has more ground to it than its physical existence. A definitive contradiction to air, the earth forms the solid substance of all being. Passive and influential is what distinguishes this powerful element. Right in paradox, we have air. Unlike earth, air is more of an active and volatile element. In the physical sense, it is the source of existence. In the broader perspective, this element signifies the power of intellect and mind. Air as an element symbolises the invisible, unpredictable, and ungovernable. Its quality of inspiration and creativity is categorically both a physical and abstract definitive. While air is capricious, water is calm and reflective. One of the fluid elements of the five, it is one of the core essentials for mental and physical balance. It is believed to be healing, inspiring and is an elixir of positivity. Water is known to be the purest of forms. It extinguishes fire, another powerful element. Across all beliefs, water has always been sought as a neccessity to discover and cleanse oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inner

spiritual and physical self. Fearless, powerful and potentially destructive, fire as an element is a symbol of might and influence. Its physical significance lies in its manifestation of the sun, where its brightness and light stand to enlighten. Its basic associative natures are creativity, will power, bravery and compassion. On an influentially inclined note, it is everything forceful, dominating, strongly sexual and energetic. While all of these elements had a physical premise, aether defies this norm. Aether, one of the most abstract and seemingly complex elements, it defines the energy that fills all spaces. This energy adheres to free interpretation as divine, spiritual, religious or paranormal to different beliefs and cultures. Aether does have a physically conclusive existence, its meaning and definition inclines towards the existence of an intangible power that exists and in turn governs the actions of the universe. Hence, we'd say that these elements stand out among others. Why? Because each element by itself stands for a quality which is commendable and unique. Water signifies self-reflection, earth for being empathy, fire for bravery, air for being unconventional and aether for self-connection. It is tough, possessing these qualities and rising beyond a quintessential spectrum. These elements symbolise exactly that. Each helps in shaping us as humans. And to go beyond the ordinary to carve a place for yourself among those who dared to defy the "normal" are the people we look up to. So, for our special anniversary issue, we bring you five exceptional individuals who dared to rise above the ordinary and stand as revolutionaries when it comes to personifying these powerful five elements. SKY ISN'T THE LIMIT Meet Ayesha Aziz, the 20-year-old women from Kashmir, who also happens to be one of the youngest female pilots in India. Leo Oommen gets candid with her about her sky-high aspirations and her connect with the sky

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN YOUR CAREER AS PILOT? Ever since I was a little girl, I was really ambitious and had a vision of what my life would look like. I wanted to do something unconventional. I wanted to do something that was really challenging and inspiring. I wanted to take over our patriarchal society so that I set an example for other women. At that time, it was just a thought. I had an ambition and a goal. Initially, like every child who looks up to his/her teacher, I also decided that I wanted to become a teacher when I grow up. I used to write my lessons on doors, and not on the usual blackboard. But as I grew, I found that I wanted to be a pilot, and that remained consistent throughout my life till the time I got into action and got into flying. By the fifth or sixth grade, I was convinced that I wanted to be a pilot.

WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATIONAL FORCE THAT HELPED YOU REACH YOUR GOAL? What really motivated me was the vision that I had in my mind and how badly I needed it to become a reality. And because I hail from Kashmir, we would often travel

back and forth to Kashmir, sometimes twice or thrice in a year. Kashmir became our frequent travelling destination. Airports, airplanes and pilots â&#x20AC;&#x201D; these things were the objects of my affection and I was enraptured by them. It was something I always loved, and if at all I would know that I am going to be travelling to Kashmir, I would lose all my sleep in the anticipation of my flight the next morning.

WHAT WERE THE INITIAL STRUGGLES YOU FACED WHEN YOU DECIDED TO JOIN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY? I had just completed my 10th grade and the very next month, I decided to join flying club. I truly believe that if you love something, the entire universe will help you achieve it. Since I enjoyed flying so much, I didn't really face any struggles or complications. While I was in flying school, I was in the 11th grade and was simultaneously doing my high school education. Weekdays I attended high school and my weekends would be 9-to-5pm sessions of ground studies for flying. Managing wasn't really difficult for me, but the only part which I found

tough was adjusting socially in flying school. We were around 7-8 people in a batch of Private Pilot License (PPL), and I was the only girl. I was also very young. The rest of them were senior to me and were above the age of 35-40. They were taking up flying lessons as a hobby and not as profession. That was the only part where I realised that my friends were not of my age group and there was a huge age gap between us.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT FLYING? I find flying to be fun as it involves science and gravity. As you fly you get to admire and notice several things taking place in nature. It is the most satisfying part of aviation because I am a staunch nature lover. It is something which ticks my soul. I can sit in the aircraft for hours and keep admiring until the captain would say ‘Okay Ayesha, get back to flying, enough of admiring’. This is what feels unique about flying to me.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH NASA. In 2011, I got my student pilot license and within the next year I visited NASA. I made sure that I had some experience in flying and an understanding of what it's all about. Before my trip, I flew for certain hours and those were the initial hours of flying in an aircraft all by myself. Going to NASA was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I still remember every moment I spent over there. While we were there, we got a firsthand experience in everything done by an astronaut before going to space, which included international space activity, several experiments inside the shuttle, orbital movement activity, scuba diving, area 51 activities, many kinds of walks were done like moonwalk, bunny walk, which are done by astronauts when they are up in space. We did G Force acceleration and multi-axis spin where the chair spins 360-degree as per your weight.

question in a hilarious manner saying, "Oh you little girl, you have already achieved it all". When I saw her in the blue astronauts’ suit, (which I got to wear as well) I could instantly feel a connection of myself to her.

WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER AS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A PILOT? When you fly, you have to leave behind everything. You have to be faster than the machine. You require a good presence of mind, instantaneous action, one cannot afford to be monotonous. You cannot lack any flying skills when you are inside the cockpit, and you need to forget that you are man or a woman, because the machine does not know that. It is us who have that in our mind. You need to be confident as the society is a male-dominated society, and a man will always try to put you down, so it is you who has to rise up and take a stand for yourself.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE YOUTH WHO HAVE PASSION FOR AVIATION? Be focused and consistent in what you do. There comes a time in aviation where one feels like giving up. Even when you do flying and any activities related to flying, one feels it is difficult to grasp. You cannot grasp it all in one go. It takes time to learn and during that time, do not lose hope. Not everyone is a born ace pilot, and you will have your flaws. Be goal-oriented and nothing should make you lose your focus in this profession. yi

YOU ALSO MET SERENA WILLIAMS, WHO HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF YOUR INSPIRATIONS. HOW WAS THAT EXPERIENCE? I met her when she had come down to Mumbai in 2013. I consider myself lucky as I did not even expect it to happen. People dream of meeting celebrities but I dreamt of meeting astronauts. When I was in the 6th grade, she had flown to space and I had admired her for it. I wanted to do something as challenging as that. I did not want the sky to be my limit but rather, I wanted space to be my limit. Meeting her was like adding another feather to my cap. I was seated in the front row and she was standing at the podium sharing her experience of going to space. I interacted and shared my thoughts with her and asked her, ‘What more do I need to do for being an astronaut?’ she replied to my

WHAT DOES COOKING AND FOOD MEAN TO YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT IT? Cooking and food is my lifeline, it is something that I live for and I can't imagine a life without it. It’s my passion and has always been and now it’s my profession, which I am really passionate about. WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE DURING THE JOURNEY TO MASTERCHEF INDIA? There was a lot of stress being the first in line coupled with the performing under stress. But, at the end of it, when I look back it was all worth it, as it got the best out of me. HOW DID YOUR LIFE CHANGE AFTER WINNING MASTERCHEF INDIA? Over all, it provided me with a great platform to turn my passion into reality and into a profession. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA TO WRITE YOUR BOOK THE SPICE ROUTE? I always wanted to share what I had learnt in life and the recipes that I had learnt from my travel, from people, from my mother and my grandmother. I also wanted to share my experiences during Masterchef along with recipes that I created then and for my children - all this inspired me to write The Spice Route. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE KEY TO A PERFECT RECIPE? A recipe that comes from the heart and is well executed by the mind, that gives you a sense of gratification and happiness along with pride after creating it and is appreciated and enjoyed by the one who it is served to is a perfect recipe according to me. Whether it's simple or complex doesn't matter. WHAT IS THE MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE GIVE TO THE YOUTH IN INDIA TODAY? If you have a dream and a vision for the future, don't let it die due to the circumstances and people around you. Your time will come! WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Restaurants, books, travel and TV shows are all a part of my future plans. WHO INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE CULINARY ARTS AND WHY? My grand mother and my mother have inspired me to become a chef.

IF YOU COULD COMPETE AGAINST ONE CHEF, WHO WOULD IT BE? It would be myself. Every new dish is a new beginning for me and my career. IN AN AGE WHERE KITCHEN GADGETS AND COOKING METHODS ARE SLOWLY MOULDING THEMSELVES AROUND ELECTRICITY, HOW ESSENTIAL IS THE METHOD OF COOKING TO YOU? It is an essential part of cooking, but at the same time, there are simple ways too. It really depends on what one is cooking. Electricity is a power source, as is LPG. Authentic cooking is always natural – fire, coal and other elements. DO YOU THINK PATRIARCHAL BIGWIGS DOMINATE THE CULINARY INDUSTRY? Every industry is, but that is changing quickly across the spectrum. FOOD IS SUBJECTIVE TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. SOME MAY LIKE A DISH AND SOME WON'T. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NEGATIVE CRITICISM TO YOUR FOOD? Food is more about appreciation rather than criticism. It is a positive field and constructive opinions and inputs mould cooking into a flexible art form that caters to people who have varying tastes. Successful recipes have to cater to the taste buds and it is essential that every chef understands that. Often referred to as the stuff of life, Rehan Poncha has always shared a special nexus with water. The Olympian swimmer tells Priyanka Iyer why he will always go back to the pool even after retiring

HOW DID YOU OVERCOME YOUR OBSTACLES, CONCERNING YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER? As a child, I suffered from acute bronchitis and my doctor recommended swimming, as it improves breathing. I was 6-years-old and had entered a competitive race at the Otters Club Gala, Mumbai. I finished second to last — 29th out of 31 participants. Though I was still young, this loss ripped me apart. I, then worked very hard for 3-4 months, participated in a race and won the silver medal. There was no stopping after that! I always had massive ego but very low self-esteem growing up. When I was in school, I was a terrible athlete. I couldn’t run fast and always stood last in the races. That really upset me. I was also a very shy child. That’s when I decided that I had to win, if not in athletics then something else. That drove me to pursue swimming. I joined Shiamak Davar’s dance classes, too. I had my dance, and swimming lessons every alternate day. Dad asked me to choose between the two, as it got a little too much for him to manage. I chose dance over swimming. I made that decision when my class instructor told us it was day one of duet dance day, and I was mortified with the thought that I would have to dance with a girl. I ran

out of the dance class and told dad that I’d changed my mind and wanted to swim. It’s funny that this is how I made my career choice!

WHICH ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY? I think representing my country at the Beijing Olympics was the most memorable. It’s an honour to be called an Olympian, and I did so in front of my parents who were there to watch me swim at the Olympics. Apart from the above, I think the two Best Overall Male Athlete awards that I received from the Prime Minister at the National Games in 2002 and 2007, as well as the Arjuna Award in 2010 are achievements that are most special to me and give me goose bumps to this day!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SWIMSMART CLINICS? Not being part of competitive swimming anymore, I still wanted to stay in touch with the sport, in other ways. Two years ago, I started Swim Smart — short-format coaching clinics that fine-tunes competitive swimmers in various aspects, such as the element of dry-land training, in-pool workouts, with a motivational talk. Through

Swim Smart, I’m in touch with swimmers and the pool. When my swimmers do well, I feel like I’m racing again. I train across India and am extremely happy with the way things are shaping up. It is a compliment in itself when parents of the countries top swimmers have trust in my ability to help their kids reach their full potential. I train golf through the week and do my workshops on weekends. During my time off, I’m travelling for my motivational talks. So, my life is pretty full-on!

short game practice. I honed my skills further by training with Justin Parsons at the Butch Harmon School of Golf in Dubai. My goals are to be as good a golfer as I was a swimmer. I have pressure to perform in golf, but only the pressure I put on my self. I want to do what no Indian sportsman has ever done — become an Olympian in two different sports!

IN 2014, YOU WROTE AN OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER MODI REQUESTING HIM TO PUT ATHLETES FIRST AND PREVENT OFFICIALS FROM USING ATHLETIC EVENTS FOR THEIR PERSONAL BENEFITS. DO YOU NOW FEEL LIKE THERE IS AN IMPROVEMENT?

I think every athlete does require having a certain amount of natural talent and also be physically gifted to play his sport well. But the above only takes him up to a certain level of competence, and from there on, the individual requires many more skills and good training habits. In my opinion, resilience and dedication are most important for an athlete to stay motivated through the hardest training days and competition. I’ve been through so many ups and downs in my career, and the one quality that got me through it all, was that undying attitude to never give up. Every young athlete must have this attitude, and coupled with work and talent, he can achieve all he’s ever dreamt of! That’s my message to budding athletes everywhere. yi

I think that there surely has been an improvement in the way our athletes are treated and more importantly, respected. They are valued more for who they are, and the effort that goes into being a champion. Yes, you will always find cases where teams and athletes have been treated shabbily, or government officials have taken advantage of the system, nevertheless, we are on a better road today. With Olympics around the corner, there are several financial scholarship schemes that have been offered to medal probable and Olympic qualifiers. More and more Indians who do not play any sport and interested in what our top athletes are doing and that’s a good sign for the future. I would not say its ideal, but we are surely getting there!

WHAT MADE YOU SWITCH FROM SWIMMING TO GOLF AND WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE FROM IT? From representing India at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, to walking home with medals at the Malaysian Open, Singapore Open, and Hong Kong Open, gold and bronze medals at the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam, and several other accolades and awards, I have achieved a lot in the pool. I was a five-time National champion, and held the distinction of being the Best Overall Athlete at the 2002 and 2007 National Games, and a finalist at the 2010 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. In July of 2012, I swam my last competitive race at the qualifiers of the 2012 Summer Olympics. I wanted an extended break from 20 years of back-to-back swimming. At that point of time, I had no intention of retiring from competitive swimming. But then, one thing led to another. With the drive of learning a new sport and missing being in the groove of racing and competing professionally, I saw my attention shifting to golf. I didn’t have it easy with golf either. In the beginning, like any new golfer, I hit terribly on day one at the driving range. By the third day, I was training for seven hours. I would buy bucket after bucket and do my

SCALING NEW HEIGHTS To conquer Mount Everest and five of the highest summits in the world is no mean feat. But tougher was the challenge and higher were the skies for 28-year-old amputee and mountaineer Arunima Sinha. Stuti Nabbaza talks to her about her struggles AFTER THE ACCIDENT, WHEN YOU WERE RECOVERING FROM YOUR AMPUTATION, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BE PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY STRONG? In any situation, it is very important for one to be mentally strong. When I was in the hospital, I realized that there is no use regretting over what is done. I decided to begin by making my amputated leg my biggest strength. At that time, Yuvraj Singh’s determination to fight cancer inspired me. Swami Vivekananda’s writings also generated energy within me. His rules and discipline helped me mentally prepare myself.

WHEN YOU DECIDED TO CLIMB THE EVEREST, WHO SUPPORTED YOU? My family has always been my backbone. My brother-inlaw supported and my brother was the one who helped aid my financial problems. My elder sister looked after my mother when she was sick. In this way, we shared our work and responsibilities. At a time when people could not come to trust me and support me with the decision to climb a mountain with a prosthetic leg, Madam Bachendri Pal stood by me. She believed in my determination to climb the Mount Everest and succeed. She inspired me. Bharat Vikas Kendra sponsored my tour and invested in mountaineering. Mission Seven Summit is also being sponsored by them.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WHILE CLIMBING MOUNT EVEREST? FROM 6 YEARS AGO, WHEN YOU WERE A NATIONAL VOLLEYBALL CHAMPION TO UNDERTAKING MISSION SEVEN SUMMIT, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JOURNEY? I can say that there is no substantial difference between volleyball and what I am doing today, except the change in roots. Mentally speaking, there is no change whatsoever. Because the determination which comes with playing volleyball is similar to the determination which comes with mountaineering. The only difference being, volleyball is about winning and losing. But inmountaineering, there is no scope for mistakes. We win or we pay the price of losing with our lives. I feel that discipline and rules are very important to follow in whatever we pursue in life.

My biggest challenge was convincing people. My Sherpa, who was my guide, wasn’t ready to believe that I could climb with a prosthetic leg. He supported me at a later stage where he realized that I could do it. It would have been easier, had he trusted me from the beginning. The second challenge was tackling with my artificial leg. My leg was designed for basic walking purposes and it was definitely not designed for mountaineering. Since I was not financially equipped to obtain a more suitable artificial leg, I decided to carry on with what I had. At minus sixty degrees, my artificial leg kept detaching itself. I couldn’t attach it back by exposing my thighs as there would have been a possibility of frostbite. I had to support it with my hand and make do with the situation. Due to this I took 28 hours to make the journey to and

fro from camp four to the main summit. My walkie talkie wasn't working and my resources were exhausted. It was difficult to carry all that weight. Oxygen bottles itself counted for 12-14 kg. Due to these constraints, it wasn't possible for me to delay my journey. I covered an entire journey with some chocolate and a litre of water. I used bits of ice to suck on so that my throat doesn't dry up. These are the problems which were bound to occur in mountaineering. But it is more difficult when people make fun of you, do not believe you and discourage you. Nevertheless did not accept defeat.

WHAT WERE YOUR VERY FIRST THOUGHTS ON REACHING THE PEAK? When I reached the peak, I felt like raising my hands high and shouting that I was on top of the world! I felt like raising my voice so high to reach all those people out there who felt that women, the disabled or the middle class couldn’t reach their goals. After thanking the people who supported me, I unfurled the National flag. That was when I decided that I didn’t want to let my determination rest. I decided to cover the highest summits of all the seven continents in the world. That was just the beginning of my journey.

THERE ARE MANY YOUNGSTERS TODAY, WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT MOUNTAINEERING. HOW EASY IS IT FOR THEM TO OBTAIN FUNDING AND EMOTIONAL TRAINING? It is very difficult. Even for me, getting sponsorship for Vinson Massif is tough, even though it is one of the most challenging summits. There is a lack of support from the government and private companies. It is only when someone in a certain company is interested in investing in mountaineering can you get support. Even if you create a brand out of yourself, it is very difficult. Although BVG has assured me of investment, they are finding it a challenge to obtain 60-70k for the Vinson Massif expedition. But as I tell all mountaineers, they have to voice their problems and difficulties to the people. There is a need to understand the problems and hardships endured by the mountaineers to achieve the goals for the people.

After the existing garbage is cleared up, vigilant rules and regulations should be made, urging the mountaineers to bring back what they take with them. The mountains are our heritage. Without them, there will be no mountaineers. Referring to the problem of dead bodies, it is very difficult to bring them back. Helicopters are of no use too, as it is difficult for them to land near Camp 4 on Mt Everest itself. The mountaineers who climb up can put the dead bodies into a crevice. That should make things slightly easier.

WHAT DOES OUR YOUTH LACK TODAY WHEN IT COMES TO ACHIEVING THEIR GOALS? AND WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE THEM? Today, the youth does not believe much in books. It believes in life. It acts on its instincts. The biggest problem of the young generation is not the fact that they can’t achieve their goals, but the fact that they do not have a goal. They change their aims every day. PARANORMAL ACTIVITIES When we talk of spiritualism and the paranormal, it’s hard not to conjoin it with some amount of skepticism. Gaurav Tiwari, founder of the Indian Paranormal Society talks to Janvi Manchanda about what it’s like to be a believer in the midst of non-believers

YOU WERE BORN TO A FAMILY OF NONBELIEVERS. WHAT CHANGED YOU FROM A NON-BELIEVER TO A BELIEVER? There have been a lot of incidents in my life that accounted for turning me into a believer. Though I was born into a family of non-believers, my parents always encouraged me to not to believe in anything that is illogical or irrational. So my profession and my education never gave me a chance to believe or even look for irrational subjects in the society. It all started when I was in America, training to become a commercial pilot and that is the time when my belief changed. I was living in an apartment provided by my flight school, when me and my roommates started experiencing things which were beyond our understanding. Initially, we believed that whatever we were experiencing were just pranks. As the activities started escalating we were convinced that it involved an outer body intelligence. Post these experiences, I began my research in the metaphysical field, being a part of Paranexus Institution in Florida. This actually made me find logic in things which earlier seemed to be illogical to me.

HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN PARANORMAL ACTIVITY AND HOAXES? We have designed several techniques to interview people that categorises their problems into psychological, physiological and paranormal. We believe screening the clients is the key to understand the actual problem.

WHY DO SPIRITS OR DEMONS HAUNT CERTAIN PLACES OR PEOPLE? Their wish! Any place could be haunted for a 100 years without the residents knowing about the paranormal activity. It all depends on the emotional need of the entity, why and how they haunt the place. Mostly, it is the deep attachment or the fear to move on that makes the entity haunt a place or a person.

HOW RELIABLE IS THE TECHNOLOGY YOU USE TO COMMUNICATE WITH AN ENTITY? There are numerous ways to communicate with the entities. Many times, we receive false positives during our communication, but as an investigator it is our duty to rule out any possibility of false positives. We also analyze our recordings and evidences in order to understand if it was a real communication from the after life.

IN ALL YOUR YEARS OF RESEARCH WHAT HAVE YOU DISCOVERED? I discovered that there is more to understand in life. What we have studied at educational institutions is only a fragment of the reality. Life is only about moving on and achieving enlightenment that is self-actualization and also the fact that life never ends.

DID YOU EVER REGRET YOUR CAREER CHOICES? I never regret my choices. I’ve learnt to live up to my choices and not repent them. Though everyone faces a lot of challenges in their lives, those who know what, how and why they are doing it never regret.

ONE CASE THAT YOU ENJOYED SOLVING THE MOST?

GETTING STARTED. The first step for every food trucker is to acquire all the necessary licenses required to drive and park a food truck in the city. Since the government has not yet recognised food trucks as an entity and there is no specific food truck license available, there are still certain licenses one would need to acquire. It usually takes about two to three months to acquire the same. The next most important step would be to decide upon the place where you would like to operate out of and fix upon a parking place. Most food truckers usually face a lot of problems with respect to the parking and regular tiffs with the policeman are unavoidable in our country where efforts by the National Food Truck Association are still on to ensure recognition. The next step would be to decide upon the menu. The menu to a large extent affects the choice of the truck. If the menu is elaborate and requires cooking the size of the truck would be much larger than a ready to serve menu would requite. It would be best to offer a troublefree, not very elaborate menu in the beginning the looks of which are enough to excite the customer’s taste buds. Finally, getting a truck should not be a major hassle, with second hand trucks to the rescue. We still, however, lack elaborate and huge trucks dedicated to just food, which is quite a road bump with most aspiring food truckers who wish to cook gourmet recipes in their food trucks at lower prices. As interesting as this profession looks, it has its own struggles, especially in India where it is still at a nascent stage. However, it is only growing, as we already have a whole bunch of food truckers in and around Mumbai, serving lip-smacking gourmet-styled food items. Whether it is on a smaller scale or an extremely large one like the Paris attacks witnessed recently. ISIS claims to have democratic rule but with extensive human rights violations, the world knows this claim does not hold any weight. With current demographics, the international community

is befuddled as to how this organization can sustain itself financially. Many economists argue a majority of their finance is directly funded by Turkish oil companies purchasing cheap oil by establishing shell corporations to avoid taxes and revealing ownership rights. However, with Turkey being a part of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and having border skirmishes with ISIS, this seems less than likely. Strength In Numbers With major world powers like the United States and France increasing the number of air strikes carried out by their respective air forces, the terrorist organizations’ armed forces are at an all time low and dwindling at an alarming rate. This comes at a cost. With no solid recon on the ground, air strike locations are strictly

decided by satellite imaging. With this lack of certainty of differentiating between hostiles and civilians, families being torn apart is a given. And this may just be what will go down as ISIS’s salvation in the history books. “With great power, comes great responsibility.” Some statistics: n ISIS has approximately twice as much as land after the US led coalition begun this includes oil deposits, air bases, army camps, radio towers etc. n ISIS gained over a million more Syrian and Iraqi supporters since the coalition Many might wonder why, out of all the possible outcomes, we have to deal with this one. Simple. The number of civilian casualties is directly proportional to the number of airstrikes carried out. To put it in a layman’s terms, if you keep bombing ISIS fighters along with civilians the number of civilians die increase along with it. And an Expelliarmus Charm isn’t going to help. How this does not help? With an increase in civilian death rates, families are being torn apart. After that, some propaganda and thirst for revenge does the trick. Victims then want to fight against western aggression and this increases the number of ISIS fighters. This has, today, become an infinite loop and a counter loop, safe to say, is desperately needed. Nevertheless, with all that has been said, things aren’t looking so bad for the coalition. ISIS has been driven out of many areas that had provided major tactical advantages for them. This has forced ISIS’s hand into action. All this makes things very clear. For example, imagine a territory shaped like a square; naturally the square has four sides, top, bottom, left and right. If it is losing a battle on right hand side and retreating, it has only three sides to gain any additional land from. Similarly, driving out ISIS from a side forces it to acquire territory from elsewhere. As more countries join in on the coalition, boxing in the enemy to stop it from spreading becomes fairly easy. This is why ISIS has concentrated terrorist attacks and recruitment from a smaller basket of nations. Thus, reducing the chance for further conflict. So one might say air strikes are not a completely flawed idea. Why the Media Attention? One might ask why ISIS is gaining so much more media attention instead of other militant jihadist groups. Well, because they are winning. ISIS is the most successful jihadist group the world has seen till date. They collect taxes from businesses, set up infrastructure, have many democratic qualities and also release quarterly reports. They are also the fastest growing terrorist organization, presently. ISIS is infamous for beheading civilians and soldiers alike, often uploading these videos online. Moreover,

damaging historical sites and artifacts have angered many communities. Not only that, but infiltrating and setting up recruitment accounts on social media networks is something that governments in most countries are getting accustomed to. Groups like Anonymous often intervene and remotely shut down these accounts. This has been widely criticized by many nations, and for good reason too. Accessing any website is like a two way street. Data is sent from both sides. This makes it very simple to track down locations of where these accounts are being operated from. Anonymous thinks otherwise. The Achilles’’ Heel Like every organization, ISIS has its problems and some are beyond repair. ISIS has a uniquely fractured command and control. It has a caliphate, which is considered the leader. Every time a caliphate passes, the few handfuls working directly under him are, technically, the only ones who can succeed him and take control of the organization. The next caliphate is elected by popular vote. Needless to say, people usually end up disagreeing. It can take anywhere between 2 weeks to a month until the next caliphate is officially announced. During this a period of unrest often settles. Laws passed by the deceased caliphate are enforced poorly and corruption is always at a high. Records have shown that the citizens living in the region have experienced a drop in satisfaction and happiness. But this is only a drop in the ocean. Since ISIS fighters are untrained, they usually die in combat and the weapons and ammunition they had is almost never recovered. With deficit of weapons and ammunition, trying to keep order in the region itself is hanging on a thread. Riots are breaking out more than ever and often end in a bloodbath. Also with high political pressure and a UN peacekeepers’ backing, those oppressed are gaining more motivation than ever. However, there is little hope for this to actually bring around significant change. Future Prospects Whoever said “Sometimes peace is about having a bigger stick than the other guy” is clearly mistaken. An important lesson is to be learnt here. Fear and oppression against developing countries by developed countries will surely not ensure peace or keep anything or anyone in check. However, the current situation is, needless to say, very fragile with tensions at an all-time high, with the Islamic State launching a new reign of terror on a global scale. It may not be long before France officially declares war on ISIS, therefore compelling all other NATO members to join in on the ongoing coalition. The last glimmer of hope for diplomacy seems lost for now. Perhaps the next most powerful person in the world could bring about revolution. yi 2016 JULY YOUTHINCMAG.COM 47

Teaching today isn’t just limited to classrooms. Members of the youth, who are not qualified are taking to NGOs and even the streets to spread knowledge. While it isn’t an uncommon phenomenon, it certainly has gained momentum over the years. Priyanka Iyer tells you more about it

ahatma Gandhi once said,“The best way to find yourself is by losing yourself in the service of others.” But what service can we students do? Giving back to the society helps nurture compassionate, caring and considerate people that will work for the welfare of others and the betterment of the world. Yes, we know. But what exactly can we do? Since we have spent most of our lives studying, all our knowledge is fresh in our mind. Just like a sponge, we have absorbed a lot of knowledge and are ready to squeeze it all out and share it with others. The only difference is, we retain our knowledge if not deepen it as we teach and share our learning with others like less privileged people who are unfortunately not exposed to the excellent opportunities available. Not only does it help with resumes, but it is an invaluable experience too. Going with a positive attitude and the determination to help others is imperative when teaching others. Students have the potential to be great teachers, and can really help make a difference to someone’s life. The juxtaposition in the idea of students becoming teachers makes it a very interesting topic. How would students

approach teaching? What changes would there be in the methods of teaching? Where would they teach to take the maximum experience? Students and teachers generally have different mindsets due to the generation difference. But, when students become teachers, the entire approach to teaching would be different. Teaching isn’t limited to children. Teaching underprivileged children can greatly affect their future giving them chances to work at better paying jobs in the future, letting them live better lives. However, teaching handicapped or disabled adults who never got the opportunity to receive a proper education is also a possibility. Moreover, teaching people in the low-income bracket will help their livelihoods and simultaneously benefit the country’s economy. For instance, in Shanghai, China, an organisation known Home Sweet Home teaches disabled people and also gives them proper living accommodations. They also give them work opportunities in other schools and in making clothes, bags and other accessories so that they can earn a living. Many people from Home Sweet Home have now got proper jobs at institutions and companies. Home Sweet Home is affiliated with many schools and the students

of the schools teach the people from Home Sweet Home utilising the school’s facilities. There is an abundance of people who wish to learn but were never given the opportunity. Education is a right. Teaching English to the kids is absolutely necessary as simply being able to communicate globally opens many doors to jobs. The basics of the language and grammar can be coupled with classic literature along with modern novels, making the teaching more interesting and appropriate. Teaching other subjects such as mathematics, the sciences, the humanities, the arts and sports will also be helpful for the children in the future. Letting children learn life skills, computer skills, and other skills will be useful in getting a job later on. Integrating a digital aspect to the lessons can make the classes more entertaining and more practical. Presenting these underprivileged children with good quality education is our responsibility. Every student has experienced the boredom of sitting in a classroom and the pains of waking up early to travel a far distance to reach school. Teaching in parks and gardens makes learning more exciting and also provides space to play games and sports. It may be more suitable to teach in classrooms near slums so that the kids from the slums aren’t required to travel that far. It is recommended to try volunteering at NGO’s and charities that work for these causes to gain the experience of teaching and help those in need. For instance, an organisation called Teach for India teaches underprivileged children all around India. It is affiliated with many schools around India and has impacted many people’s lives. It teaches in many classrooms situated in places ranging from slums to schools, providing the kids with basic stationary and facilities. Like Teach for India, there are numerous other organisations that reach out and fight for different causes that we students can volunteer for. As a student, the dream is to travel the world and encounter new cultures. During a year gap or the holidays, students can fly abroad and teach in another

country for a few months to a year. Teaching abroad also presents the opportunity to travel the area and learn more about the place’s culture. Furthermore, interacting with people with different backgrounds is a unique experience in itself. Going to developing countries and teaching benefits to the people also adds to résumés. People from abroad have also come to India to teach, especially to volunteer in NGOs. For example, Volunteering India has many programs where people from all over the world can apply and volunteer helping kids learn. Education is made global as people from around the world teach and interact with people of a different nationality. Often university programs offer chances for the students to become teachers or teaching assistants. For instance, in many universities students who have taken a course and done well in it can act as a teaching assistant for that course for the juniors. There are also some programs in universities where they offer you a proper, legit job of teaching, where you can earn a salary as well. Universities tend to expose you to many work opportunities, allowing students to become teachers. The paradigm shift of students becoming teachers will affect the way of teaching. The youthful exuberance versus the conventional wisdom will affect the methods of teaching. In the current digital age, when the youth become teachers, the great innovations of technology are effectively used. Implementing the use of visual aids can give a realistic demonstration to children who haven't seen the world. Going on field trips and using Google Earth and the satellite transmissions to learn in Geography compared to the drawings and pictures in textbooks would be much more effective. Students can teach courses online and connect with underprivileged people from all over, reducing education costs greatly and making good quality education more accessible. However, providing proper technology and teaching them how to use it will need student volunteers especially as the youth now have the expertise in using technology from a young age. SMELL The most underrated sense out of all is our sense of smell. It remains unnoticed – the privilege of being able to smell a new book, delicious food, petrol and the soil just after it rained. But, our sense of smell has geared up to prove its importance beyond these things. Wondering how? The mystery unfolds soon.

VISION Have you ever thought about your sense of vision as something more than your eyesight? There are so many things that your eyes actually fool you to believe. FORBIDDEN EYE CANDY

t was only recently that Colours Infinity introduced a new show called “The Royals”, a satirical drama about the life of the British royal family. With Elizabeth Hurley quoting sentences like “ I am the queen of England, I am always ready”, sneak peaks into the royally (pun intended) dysfunctional family, it is all about holding bare the reality in all the glam and admiration the royal family is drowned in. However, that is not what we wish to discuss here. One of the main characters of the serial Princess Eleanor, a young, smart and extremely rebellious daughter of the royal family is provided with Demi-God of a bodyguard. In a strange sequence of events, on one such drunken night she sleeps with her bodyguard who later goes on to threaten her and goes on to tell her how he taped their entire act the previous night and black-mails her in return. In the following episodes, the bodyguard goes on to have his way with the princess in the bed and otherwise, and surprisingly the princess doesn’t seem to have much problem with him as she gets used to the ‘black-mail sex’ or in other words, consensual rape. The first impression of every viewer was to hate the bodyguard as he was blackmailing the Princess with a sex tape which is not only a grievous crime but also not a very idealistic premise in a relationship. Yes, the two individuals the Princess and the bodyguard go on to have a sweet little love story for themselves based on him controlling her and her giving into his demands and eventually, falling in love. I have to give it to the director for making the audience fall for the most un-chivalrous and unethical behaviour by the main characters. The Royals is the most recent example. Television and movies are full of examples of audience enjoying a romance where the characters don’t exactly have their moral compass facing north. Take 50 Shades of Grey for example. Had Christian Grey not been the dashing millionaire that he is, how long would his ‘love’ story with the meek and naive Anastasia lasted? Would we have enjoyed the sex scenes and waited for them to kiss if he wasn’t breathtakingly handsome? And a handsome man can be a sadist and a sexually driven control freak, which derives pleasure by tying up

and spanking and beating his sexual partner. That’s not crazy, is it? My heart sank when I realized who the murderer, in Shonda Rhimes’, ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ was. I certainly did not want to see the murderer’s amazingly hot body covered in an orange jumpsuit. Well, I guess the creators too couldn’t stand to see that catastrophe as the creators craftily moulded the show in such a manner that in the second season he continues to romance the prettiest girl on the show as the audience heaves a sigh of relief. Bollywood too has similar instances. Take Don 2 for instance, how many girls did Sharukh Khan have swooning and blushing with his “jungli billi” statement? So much so that by the end of the second instalment of the movies we didn’t mind granting him immunity for all the wrong deeds he had committed as a Don. To the extent a slight romance between him and Priyanka Chopra didn’t go unrequited. The question I am trying to ask here is that, how is it that we continue to sympathize with the criminals on our favourite shows simply because of their looks? How is it that a handsome criminal is not faced by the same outrage as a not-so-handsome criminal is faced with? What kind of psychology are the creators playing with? The logical explanation to this would be the constant togetherness of the two characters which makes us see them together. When we see the same two people every day on our screens whispering sweet nothings and kissing each other, on a regular basis we get attracted to them, criminal or not. There are instances when even the dashing looks have not enticed the audience to like the stalker Sharukh khan in Darr. Or the dangerous Ajax (remember the handsome Russian) in Deadpool, but then that is what the director wanted. If the director wants us to love the criminal we find ourselves doing that too. So maybe we are not bad people but mere puppets in the hands of directors who make us feel the way we do. So strong are the laws of attraction that looks dominate character. Such are the wonders of eyesight that the rest of all the senses go for a toss. As long as it’s someone as fictional as Loki in the Avengers films, here’s hoping that our sense of judgement does not fail us in real life.

Indian music is now going places. The new generation is now going from EDM, IDM to BDM. So we spoke to Rishab Joshi from Lost Stories and DJ Chetas and this is what they had to say about it. SINCE WHEN DID INDIAN MUSIC START REDEFINING ITSELF? Rishab Joshi: I think Indian music has been redefining itself constantly over a couple of decades with the implementation of disco, drum and bass, breaks into mainstream film music and more. Currently, a lot of new age producers are pushing the boundaries and making cutting- edge dance music with Indian elements. DJ Chetas: Indian music has constantly been redefining itself. We've never been stagnant on a style according to me. Take Bollywood for example, music composers have changed their style so much and are so adaptable. I worked with Pritam on Dilwale, he's known for Bollywood pop music and introducing rock. He opened up to exploring an EDM theme for Dilwale and together we were able to achieve that. Indian Music is also finding it's way in the International Music with artists like KSHMR sampling so much from the Indian music catalogue. HAS INTERNATIONAL MUSIC BROUGHT ANY CHANGE IN INDIAN MUSIC? Fine dining on a low budget is slowly becoming the new solution to the “money dilemma” that surrounds the youth today. Devi Dang tells you about fine dining on a budget

s we all know, the salary that arrives in your wallet every month, doesn’t really like to stay there. It seems like it takes a millenimum to arrive and slips away from your fingers in no time. However, family and friends totally don’t understand this simple yet terrific problem – always wanting to go out for outings and have fun! But, at the end of the day you want to go too! “Each individual loves spending time with family and friends during weekends to a place where one can enjoy eating food with a good ambience, but what sometimes restricts us is the price,” says Latika Sharma, a young entrepreneur. The prices of food in these restaurants cost you a fortune and naturally leave you with no money for the rest of the month. If you’re students, the problem still remains same! University life really tells you the value of money! Rajalakshmy Iyer, who is currently a student of Purdue University shares her opinion. “Money is a very crucial thing for university students, especially if you are an international student. Whether it is earning, spending or investing, we have to keep a close account," she explains. While you are restricted, your wants obviously aren’t. As a student and youth member you really want to enjoy dinners in restaurants with a good ambience and music – a perfect night out. Pranjal Wadhwa, a student preparing for competitive exams tells us, “Ambience plays a pivotal role when you decide to go out for dining, but it is usually expensive so I have to restrict myself. With so many taxes being imposed these days on food, the total cost goes up which affects everyone’s budget.” So, what’s the solution? It’s like tasting champagne on a beer budget. The restaurants have started to understand this dilemma. They’ve figured that if they provide with the same quality ambience and food, just for cheaper, so many more people like you, will visit their restaurant over other fast food chains and expensive dining. “With the coming of restaurants that are not only affordable but are giving good quality ambience at a low budget, one can easily enjoy the luxuries of fine dining,” says Sharma. 58 YOUTHINCMAG.COM JULY 2016

“Everyone wants to spend less and in return expects to get more out of that expenditure, and fine dining with good ambience in a low budget is like a cherry on the cake,” adds Wadhwa. So, many restaurants in cities are now offering fine dining at a low budget, which kills two birds from the same stone – providing you with low cost full course meals and the restaurants with more money! Even though the dining option is growing to become affordable, a lot of people still prefer the fast food chains such as McDonalds and Taco Bell. “Nevertheless, as university students who are always on the run, we don’t really have much time to appreciate fine dining even if it has a low budget; why do you think we like Taco Bell so much?” adds Iyer. However, it surely is the growing market for the people who want an inexpensive full course meal with a great ambience! When are you trying it out? Fine dining is not just confined to restaurants but also budget-friendly, carefully curated food kits. An era where we all are alone together, technology keeps us together but we are still alone deep inside. We have evolved from printing press to computers to internet and the recent addition of smartphones and gadgets. The question arises, are we losing touch in this age of digital communication and are we becoming less human with each other? Technology and digitisation has affected even the miniscule area of life. WORD THIEF ‘To Google’ has become a universal language and each country today has its own internet slang dictionary. Internet is an excellent medium to learn languages but the correct use of language should be given importance. The online world believes in manipulating language and thereby showing how brilliant it is. We have moved from manual to automatic, from writing each letter to just hitting the button. We have created a world where we steal and change words. Technology makes us competitive rather than being collaborative. HUMAN TOUCH While much is said and written about how technology changes relationships between people, how we relate differently to each other when meeting through a screen rather than in flesh is completely different. Technology for more than centuries has made it easier to connect with each other. Today, even the older generation get into the digital world to stay in touch with the newer generation. Perhaps overcoming a sense of isolation is one of the greatest features of online communities and virtual worlds. It has also improved communication for differently abled people and made it possible where it previously wasn't. Technology is improving day by day for our betterment, it is better not to waste nostalgia on the previous times. Technology is as two-edged sword and its utilisation shows how differently it can be used. The freewheeling culture of tap and swipe, touch and turn pages is better not just for us but also for the differently abled people in the society. Humans can adapt pretty quickly than what we think. Also, up to some extent, we do not always pine on wasting time and energy on something which can be done easily; we do not want to be the Luddite.

Enjoying nature trails, lakes, spending time with friends and family, watching movies on the carpet when pizzas were fairly new in India, trips to the zoo and painting exhibitions seem to be a thing of the past. It’s all replaced by the new selfpromoting Instagram, Facebook, Periscope, Snapchat and thick myopic glasses. It starts early! This 12-year-old hops into the room in kangaroo leaps, kissing an invitation card in euphoric glee and exclaiming, "I've been invited! It's come! Rahul has called me for his birthday party!" He hugs his mother as he continues leaping with euphoria. The mother fervently thanks God for answered prayers. It was a matter of prayers and a fast, too! Her son had sunk into near clinical depression the past few days due to FOMO,

which is present at all levels, ages and strata of society. Husbands snap at wives and at the household. Not being called to the chairman's intimate dinner, is eating his innards out! He's managed to drive the home environment into a veritable hell! Being left out, being left behind, not being included, having one luxury car less or even a kitchen gadget beyond budget that the Mrs. Neighbour is preening about are just a few things running through his mind! Certainly, this FOMO is a long road to nowhere! It’s so ubiquitous and such a driving force these days that the state of being happy is the most momentary and seemingly the most transient state existing. Mrs.Duddlani has hardly twirled in glee for having asked for the moon, when it’s all turned to ashes because Mrs.Lekarao, the neighbour just got planet Venus! And this from the land that in savant enlightened times, taught the world the philosophy of contentment and traveling within. Buddha, Mahavira and all the greats preached that desire is the source of all sorrow, and here we only covet, covet and covet! I had two friends who were the most eager to make it in society, in a hurry to succeed and make a mark. It was then that I suggested casually, “You have your whole lives? Why rush and appear too eager? It’s more important to have those three or four really close friends whom you can be you with,” and it struck home like a bullet to its target! This has been my philosophy for my whole life. To take things in life with some composure, dignity and equanimity – not thrust yourself everywhere, clamor, climb, elbow yourself into every dinner, party, soiree in that desperate urge to network and hand out your card before the other person has even been introduced to you properly! I have a friend who absolutely had to have a large ostentatious wedding. Her company was in the red, they were in debt but ‘society’ expected it and she felt she’d fall short in front of her groups and ‘kitty’s’. Isn’t it important to celebrate special occasions with loved ones to capture memorable intimate moments than to emptily ‘showoff’? FOMO rules tyrannically it seems! It is my belief that we can chase this FOMO thing to its inconclusive ends and work harder to plough in the means, fit in, be one better than the other, in desperate exhibitionism, Instagram, the most luxurious holidays and everything to ‘show’ ‘brag’ ‘pose’ and be one-up. In all this we are left so depleted and discontented that even a bonhomous tankard with Jones becomes an exercise in buying the single malt in its most expensive avatar from Japan, the caviar from Iran and the wife’s gown from Milan for the occasion and then speak about it and post it on every platform. The trappings aren’t about enjoyment, but about stressful performance anxiety. The days of chatting across the fence with the apron still on seems to be relegated to history. So what happened? Was life not meant to be about little joys? Simple happiness? Spontaneous impromptu teas? Why has life become such a serious business that requires so much effort and complexity and yet misses out on the original purpose of unpretentious joys? Every incident seems to be contrived toward FOMO! Like my friend Silky Sood, whose sparkling new Rolls Royce drove up, but her husband whispered in her ears, “Don’t sit just yet, let more people come into the foyer

from the party and see us getting in?” At a recent talk which has stayed with me, Montek Singh Ahluwalia seemed to refer to this very state that society has arrived at “the most pressing necessity for economic environmental existence has become the need to simplify, cut down and to live more austerely.” The excesses of present day life – chemicals, pollutants, plastics, are a result of the excessive lifestyle – vandalising our environment to the extent we ourselves might be choked out of existence as water vanishes or submerges land masses. Air? It's a misnomer for what we breathe – causing harm rather than sustenance, fossil fuels and harmful substitutes have driven fire to the status of a demon. The earth has to be forced from barrenness with factory-made materials that satiate these modern excesses – alien to its nature and harmful to us. What kind of road has humanity paved in itsendeavour to live in excess and luxury? Before we arrive at a state like the movie Wally, we have to push out some of the preciously collected FOMO things that are crowding our space literally and metaphorically. e stares at her, she stares right back at him. A few flirtatious exchanges and months later, you find them selecting the venue for their wedding. In this fast paced life, where relationships build and break at the speed of light, it's easy to stray. The thought of spending your life with just one person can be overwhelming. While this is considered normal, the demise of monogamy is inevitable. We know that cheating and lying in a relationship is a tie-breaker, but have we ever really thought about why some people cheat? It's not all black and white. There are grey areas in a person's life that compels him to commit sins he never even thought he was capable of doing. The other day, I was watching the movie The Intern, in which, a dad staying at home cheats on his tycoon wife because he felt lost somewhere and wanted to find his own identity. Maybe he wanted to feel more like a man. While what he did was cruel, it was painful for him too. His wife's crazy schedule must have been a serious blow to his ego for him to find marital comfort elsewhere. And while I don't encourage such misdoings, somewhere I do empathise with him. TAKING IT TOO LIGHTLY Another thing that is very much a problem now, is the trend of giving up. While our parents and grandparents are from a generation where in you work things out, our generation tends to just raise their hands at these things. The short temperaments, the everything-should-be-servedon-a-platter attitude and the self-appraising nature have just added to the problems. People think that they aren't worthy of going through so much suffering for a person, and there is an air of casualness to it. Breakups happen left and right. Cheating isn't uncommon. Lies are spewed every other second. What is the world coming to? Is that how we are going to a lead a normal life? Broken marriages and promiscuous partners? On a friend's recommendation, I saw the film The 7.39. It's about how a married man with two kids and a beautiful wife, meets an engaged woman, and after a few encounters, decides to sleep with her. He knows what he is doing is wrong, and yet, he says he doesn't care. He keeps cheating on his wife, to the point where even when his wife finds out about his infidelity, he wishes to run away with the other woman. Somewhere, his thirst for something more than the monotony of his daily life compelled him to find comfort in the arms of another woman. I think, sometimes, people know what they are doing is wrong, and yet they choose to ignore that inner voice. Lust overpowers their conscience. And the fact that they're completely okay with it is very disturbing. SADDENING CONSEQUENCES Cheating has become so rampant in this generation, that the moment you find something off about your partner, one of your immediate guesses is that he might be hiding something, or worse, cheating. And while people don't think much when they cheat, their actions have a jarring effect on the people around them. A cheating husband or a wife, not only breaks a relationship, but an entire family. Promiscuity scars people. It's the need for immediate self gratification that throws off the need for lifelong intimacy. One needs to make a few sacrifices on their self-gratification for the intimacy. And when you realise that there is no hope of any intimacy, chances are that you

might either end the relationship or cheat on your partner. I remember the first time I read the word “polygamy”. It was in Biology class wherein, one flower pollinates with several other flowers. I found it quite weird and unfaithful as a child, not knowing that this was a major problem in us bipeds too. DOMINATION TRAITS AND BOUNDARIES We’ve all seen the countless number of movies, and TV shows been made on promiscuous partners, heard the songs sung on unfaithful muses, read the books, and yet, there is a wielding power that compels some of us to cheat. Nobody is a born cheater. Unless it’s some people who really don’t care about who they hurt in satisfying their personal needs, most of us are do-gooders at heart and even the thought of cheating sounds like a heinous crime to us, and yet, it is many of us who do it. One of the main reasons as to why a person cheats is boundariestoo many or barely there. While one shouldn’t portray dictatorial tendencies in his/her relationship, it is very much needed to put your foot down when necessary. A suspicious husband might be the cause of a sneaky wife. A timid wife who lets things slide all the time could be cheated on. A partner should strike a perfect balance between overbearing and uncaring. While in most cases, the cheating partner is at fault, there might be a few incidents that could exempt their treachery. For eg, if a woman is stuck in an abusive relationship and finds no way out of it, her only solace is the “other man” in her life. It is very easy to point fingers and name the culprit, but being in the shoes of that person and experiencing the plethora of emotions that they face is what really counts. INFIDELITY AND THE PAST Another reason for infidelity is unawareness. When a person belongs to a broken home or has lived through a rough childhood, as an adult, he tends to ignore the small things that are usually frustrating for normal people with an average threshold for pain and anger. All those little grievances build up, and might result in either the person who has truly fallen for you and chooses to overlook all this, or an end to the relationship, or our least favourite option, cheating. While in most cases, a cheating partner is an absolute no-no for a further relationship, there are several people whose love and the idea of forgiveness compel them to overlook this mistake and continue with their relationship. Most of the times this forgiveness turns into life-long resentment towards the cheating partner, but sometimes, miraculously, couples do truly get back together emotionally, stronger than ever. FIGHTING FOR YOUR RELATIONSHIP Relationships, I believe, are a funny deal. Each is unique in its own way and yet, we find a sort of similarity in each one. Maybe its the blinding passion, or the implicit trust or just plain love. Although, it is difficult to have a relationship without bumps and bruises, the very essence of a relationship is the struggle to sustain it. A relationship is full of sacrifices, compromises, adjustments and all the other words that are synonymous. Cheating and lying will only get you so far, till a point where you to let that person go. As someone once quoted, “Cheating and lying aren’t struggles, they’re reasons to break up.” yi

The Olympic Games have been a great part of most peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer or winter, and usually become the centre of attention for about two weeks, every four years or two years if you watch follow both, the summer and winter Olympics. The Summer Olympics 2016, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016 is scheduled to be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5th to 21st August, this year. The motto of the games is 'Live your Passion.' Rio certainly promises to be bigger than ever. Some 206 National Olympics Committees across the world will be sending in athletes to compete. It is likely that over 10,500 of the best sportspersons in the world will compete to win in the 306 events held (in 28 different sports). With barely a few weeks left for the games to begin, learn about the players who got ticket to Rio Olympics and are representing India.

Abhinav Bindra Sport: Shooting Age: 33 At 15, Abhinav Bindra became the youngest participant in the 1998 Commonwealth Games. His breakthrough, however, came when he won a Bronze in the 2001 Munich World Cup with a new junior world record. He is Indiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only individual Olympic gold medallist having clinched Gold in 10m Air Rifle at the Beijing Olympics 2008. He is chosen as India's Flag bearer for the Rio Olympics this year, and will be seen opening the ceremony on August 5. This would also be his last time participating in the games.

Avtar Singh Sport: Judo Age: 24 Avtar Singh, who has become the first Indian judoka to qualify for the Olympics since 2004, is not nervous about doing well on the biggest stage of sports. He is one of the two Asian judokas in the 90kg category to bag a continental quota for the Rio Games. Avtar wants to emulate his role model, the legendary Milkha Singh, in making his country proud. Only time will tell if he will.

Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi Sport: Archery (Individual and Team) Age: 21, 31 and 27 respectively The women's trio will compete in the individual events as well as team events at the Rio Games in August. India's women archers earned three individual berths and a team quota by virtue of the team's performance at the World Championships in Copenhagen last year.

Dipa Karmakar Sport: Gymnastics Age: 22 The gymnast from Tripura first made a name for herself by becoming one of the five women in the world to have succeeded in landing the treacherously difficult Produnova vault and the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the quadrennial event for Rio Olympics. She is the first Indian female gymnast to win a medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and follow it up with another bronze at the Asian Championships in Hiroshima, she also reached the final round of the 2015 World Championships and finished fifth.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa Sport: Badminton (Doubles) Age: 32 and 26 respectively The shuttlers qualified on the basis of their rankings after the Badminton Asia Championships. Jwala and Ashwini have won many medals in international events including a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games historic bronze at World Championships. They currently ranked World No.14 in Women’s Doubles. Both are confident and hardworking players who aim to win a medal at Rio.

Mangal Singh Champia Sport: Archery Age: 31 The former Olympian secured an individual berth for the 2016 Rio-bound squad when he entered the recurve quarterfinals defeating sixth seed Antonio Fernandez of Spain 6-2. He will also be part of the Men’s trio archery team if they are qualified for Olympics. Indian men's archery team comprises the trio of Jayanta Talukdar, Mangal Singh Champia and Atanu Das along with

Rahul Banerjee.

Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes Sport: Tennis (Doubles) Age: 36 Rohan Bopanna currently ranked 10th in the world in the doubles ranking. He will pair up with Leander Paes for men’s doubles. Bopanna's original choice was Saketh Myneni but All India Tennis Association (AITA) selection committee felt that Paes and Bopanna are the "best bet" for a medal. For Leander Paes this would be his seventh record Olympic appearance

Saina Nehwal Sport: Badminton Age: 26 The number 2 player in the world is looking forward to bringing home a medal from the Rio Olympics. She is proudly representing India for the third time. She is the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton at the Olympics. She achieved this feat by winning the Bronze medal at the London Olympics 2012. She hopes to stay injury free to bring home a medal for her country.

Sania Mirza Sport: Tennis Age: 29 Sania, who has now won three straight Grand Slams after the 2015 Wimbledon and US Open, said she is looking forward to the August 5-21 Rio Olympics. She will partner Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles category and Prarthana Thombare in the women's doubles. Mirza, along with her regular partner Martina Hingis, is the World No 1 women's doubles player.

Shiva Thapa Sport: Boxing Age: 22 Shiva Thapa is the only boxer to qualify for Rio Olympics 2016 after five-time world champion Mary Kom got eliminated. He will compete in the bantamweight category. He bagged a bronze in the World championship in Doha. Thapa, a former Asian champion, put in some hard work to ensure his second Olympics appearance.

Vinesh Phogat Sport: Wrestling Age: 21 She comes from a family background of wrestlers. Vinesh overcame her weight issues to book India’s wrestling berth, which she had failed to achieve but qualified for the 2016 Olympics by winning gold medal in the 2nd World wide Qualifier tournament held in Istanbul, Turkey in May, 2016.

Not Yet Dinosaurs, a song from their latest album, With Love, takes experimentation to a new level. It blends tribal-style beats with heavy guitar riffs. The Circus is an alternative rock band from Delhi, formed in 2007. They fuse various genres together. Think of a musical recipe which has a healthy dollop of all these ingredients. A band that believes in ferocity of intent and an absolutely takeno-prisoners attitude that has all but died out in a scene where bands only attempt to be appreciated.

Tripet believes that although her music is mostly Bollywood centric, she experiments with various genres like dance, acoustic, ambient lounge, romantic and Sufi rock in her solo debut album,‘Woh Pal’ - A myriad of fairytales covering 360 degrees of emotions in and out of love. The British Asian born artiste although doesn't know Hindi or Punjabi, sings very well. ONE SHOT FEATURE FILM What? No retakes! The movie starts with an ‘action’ & ends at ‘cut’ of just one long take. No time to blink your eyes! Why? Edits and cuts distract the flow of a film at times. One take films aim to avoid that and give the movie another level of visual and cinematic appeal. Such a film captures your breath with the first frame and lets you relax only with the last one. In some cases, it is employed even when the makers are short on budget. One Shot Movies: Timecode (2000, English) - A Mike Figgis movie, it is a long take feature film which uses the split-screen technique, showing four screens simultaneously. It was shot with four hand held cameras, in one take, on the sixteenth performance. Russian Ark (2002, Russian & Persian) and Victoria (2015, German) are other one shot movies, among others. Challenges: Immense amount of technical knowhow and rehearsals are required to achieve this feat. Such films usually need several attempts before succeeding in creating the film in one take! It can be a challenge to achieve that visual and cinematic appeal.

This trend began the growth of YouTube &many makers growing confident of showcasing their films, regardless of some being shot on their phones. Why? Smartphones today are helping filmmakers to shoot with high resolution cameras and low budgets. So why not use the same to transform the filmmaking process? Do makers want to take the plunge of filming commercial movies on their phones?” Let’s see… One Shot Movies: Palash Muchhal’s directorial debut Brojaan shot on iPhone 6s with a multicamera setup(to be released), Tangerine shot on iPhone 5s (breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival), and Olive (completely shot on a cell phone) Challenges: The biggest challenge for filmmakers is to make the movie look cinematic. No doubt it’s a feat to shoot on a 5-inch gadget. Few supplements can help overcome these obstacles (Filmic Pro makes footage look cinematic; DaVinci Resolve for colour correction).

GUERRILLA FILMMAKING What? Giving noprior intimation to authorities; the motto is to reach, shoot and leave without drawing much attention. Why? With a surge and growth of the number of independent film makers in the past few years, the industry has become one of the most competitive ones! Producers have become more selective on choosing projects & movies are made on shoestring budgets! In many cases, there is not enough time or resources to spend to get permissions or pay bribes and other charges to shoot on real locations. One Shot Movies: Tamanchey (shot in New Delhi, starring Richa Chadda and Nikhil Dwivedi) and Dhobighat (shot in Mumbai, Kiran Rao’s directorial debut) Challenges: Without a skeleton crew (team of least possible people) and intelligent use of inconspicuous equipment, guerrilla movie-making can get one into trouble. Hence, the scenes are extremely wellrehearsed before the actual on-location shoot (Colour correction; Steadicam Smoothee: for a better grip on the camera and avoid shakiness).

SPLATTER

A relatively new sub-genre of horror, Splatter is a kick in the teeth to the traditional horror. Needless to say, the traditional approach did not satisfy many avid horror readers, who picked up these books presumably as an alternative to caffeine. Splatter, a term coined by David J. Schow, refers to the movement within horror fiction that embraced the presence of the terrifying and cut right to the gore and viscera – a genre of ‘hyperintensive horror.with no limits’. Recommendation: The Books of Blood by Clive Barker

BIOPUNK

BANGSIAN FANTASY

For all of those familiar with Tite Kubo’s manga series turned anime, Bleach, Bangsian Fantasy, ought to be right up your alley. Named after author John Kendrick Bangs, who was an important figure in shaping this genre, it deals primarily with the afterlife and the exploration of the life after death trope. It can be divided into three categories: living people stuck in the world of the dead, ghosts unable to move on and dead people in heaven or hell. Recommendation: God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian by Kurt Vonnegut.

A subgenre of cyberpunk fiction, Biopunk features a blend of film noir, Japanese manga and futuristic elements in a nihilistic society. Usually centered around biotechnology and genetic engineering, the protagonists usually have anarchist views and rebel against mega-corporations and totalitarian governments that are attempting to twist DNA for their own profit. Recommendation: Lillith’s Brood by Octavia E. Butler

STEAMPUNK

Originating sometime in the '80’s, Steampunk fantasy postulates a world where Victorian era technology took hold. Highly creative and visual, its fiction features a blend of technological elements with an anachronistic spin, producing a fantastical blend of sci-fi and fantasy. It features predominant elements from the Victorian era with perspective on art and oldschool mannerisms. While there is a heavy Victorian influence, all steampunk novels are not necessarily set in Victorian England Recommendation: The Light Ages by Ian R. MacLeod

ARTHURIAN FANTASY

The tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table have been passed down from centuries. King Arthur was said to be the epitome of goodness in the fight against evil. Popular legend believes that he is in a deep slumber, waiting for the time when Britain is in great danger, to rise again. CUISINE: Lebanese BITES AND BOOZE: Falafels has a chain of branches dotted across South Mumbai and a great option due to the serious dearth of above average Lebanese cuisine outlets. However, never one to turn a falafel down, We jumped at the opportunity to try the new summer menu. Our menu comprised of the Firecracker Falafel Wrap, the Basil and Sundried Tomato Tostada, the Piri Piri Hummus, the Mango Yogurt Shake and their Pink Lemonade. Considering that it was nearly 35 degrees outside, we started off by sipping on the Lemonade and the Mango Yogurt Shake, both of which were deliciously refreshing. The Pink Lemonade had the perfect amount of tang to it, and the Shake was decadent and not too sweet. Our food was delivered a little beyond our lunchtime, but the wait was worth it. Our first bite into the Firecracker Falafel Wrap was a colourful one, with bursts of spicy flavours enthralling our taste buds. The Basil and Sundried Tomato Tostada was equally appetising with its herby flavours and the perfect crunch. We also tried the BBQ Falafel, which is an absolute delight for BBQ sauce lovers. The Piri Piri Hummus was sadly, a disappointment due to the fact that it was too salty for our liking. FAB OR DRAB: Overall, Fafafel’s new menu does way better than most Lebanese outlets in the city. There isn’t one item on the menu that we don’t like, and our particular favourite was the delicious Firecracker Falafel Wrap. They can expect a second order from us sometime soon. PIZZERIA 1441 CUISINE: Fast food, Pizza BITES AND BOOZE: Named after the Naples of Italy, where the first wood-fired pizzeria originated, the new entrant in South Bombay boasts of a colourful, rustic vibe. The colourful murals, warm lightning and state-ofart brick oven imported from Italy totally set the perfect vibe. The cosy joint allows to create your own pizza. For the starters, we opted for the doughballs which arrived drizzled with oregano, chilli flakes and olive oil. However, they didn’t rank too well on the taste level. We moved on to try the Four Cheese Pizza in Mama’s sauce. Topped with Mozzarella, Smoked Mozzarella, Buffalo Cheese, Menthol Cheese, its exquisite depth can reawaken even the most disgruntled taste-buds and we savoured every bite with delight. Our second pizza was our personalized one, which was crisp and done well. However, it ended up being a mish-mash of flavours due to our choice of toppings. For the drinks, the Pineapple Fizz was decadent and we succumbed to its refreshing yet potent end. Dessert of the day was the lip-smacking Blueberry Panna cotta; velvety yoghurt which created a light texture and caused the flavours of the blueberries to stand out, elevating us to gastronomic haven. FAB OR DRAB: The USP of this joint can be attributed to the pizza personalization concept. However, your experience depends more on which toppings you opt for. GUSTOSO - PICK OF THE MONTH

CUISINE: Italian BITES AND BOOZE: Recently relaunched, Gustoso is a fine dining Italian restaurant in the residential areas of Kemps Corner and Khar. It has a surprisingly large, welldesigned seating area with a brick oven for making wood fired pizzas and a swanky bar. We were warmed up for our meal with a glass of Sangiovese red wine and in-house cocktails accompanied by our guest, Bharat Poojari, a welltravelled connoisseur who enlightened us about his various hospitality projects. With his experience, there could not have been a better judge of the food than him. We started our meal with a Burata Crostini, the Melanzane Parmigiana and the Prosciutto with fresh buffalo mozzarella, all of which was made from ingredients flown down from Italy. For the mains, we were spoilt for choice from a wide selection of pastas, sides to pizzas. So we decided to go with their recommendation and ordered the Gnocci Alla Sorrentina with smoked cheese, a Four Cheese with Spicy Honey pizza and Portobello Mushroom with Truffle Oil pizzas. A point to note is that Gustoso aims to serve fresh, and juicy pizzas in the Neapolitan style – the most authentic Italian pizza style there is. The highlight of the meal was the Taglionili Bombay, a pasta cooked fresh by the chef on your table in a grana padano cheese wheel flambed by brandy and then the pasta sitirred in the cheese. The Semifreddo Al Pistachio, a soft ice-cream made from only pure ingredients, alongside their Totra Caprese, a chocolate almond cake with vanilla ice cream completed our really Gustoso (means tasty in Italian) experience. FAB OR DRAB: Considering that we loved everything about our meal, Gustoso is definitely one of the finest Italian eateries in Mumbai. The flavours in the food were a lesson in perfection, and the décor, quality and freshness definitely deserve a 10/10 from our end. 49 people were killed and 53 people were left injured when a man named Omar Mateen opened fire at a gay nightclub, Pulse. The club was hosting Latin night, a weekly Saturday night event when the tragic incident occured. The incident has been labelled as the deadliest shooting in history since 11th September in 2001. An act of homophobia, it was revealed that Omar had a lover by the name “Miguel”. Miguel, in a Spanish television interview revealed this shocking fact when he revealed that Omar had sex with two Puerto Rican men, out of which one of them was HIV positive, and this terrified him.

EU referendum

Britain's future was plunged into uncertainity when voters decisided to leave the EU following a nationwide referendum. People on social media mostly “Brexit” (Britain and Exit merged together is “Brexit”) supporters feel that it will be a fair vote. It is the third nationwide referendum in UK history and comes after a four month battle for votes between the leave and stay. Following the results, which concluded with UK leaving the EU, David Cameron also handed in his resignation, which will be put into effect in October.

International Yoga Day

The United Nations declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. Yoga enthusiasts around the world were found raising and stretching their arms, inhaling and exhaling. This day was introduced when PM Narendra Modi successfully lobbied for the United Nations to dedicate 24 hours to the ancient discipline in September 2013. In India’s capital Delhi, President Pranab Mukherjee conducted a Yoga class at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, while a whopping Rs 7 crore were spent on a yoga event at Chandigarh's Capitol Complex.

China creates the fastest computer

A Chinese computer “Tianhe-2” or “TH-2”, has been named the fastest supercomputer in the world. It was developed by 1,300 scientist and engineers. It is a 33.86 supercomputer located in “National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou”. It is capable of 93 petaflops, calculations per second. According to National University of Defense Technology, it will be used for simulation, analysis and government security applications. Although it is declared as the fastest computer researchers have criticized it to be difficult to use.

Euro 2016

The 2016 UEFA Euro championship, kickstarted from June 10th with France playing host this year. A total of 53 teams competed for 23 places in the final tournament to join France. The event was kickstarted with opening matches between France vs Romania and Albania vs Switzerland. The competitions official song is, This One’s For You by David Guetta featuring Zara Larson.
