note
We are back again with our issue on the Top 100 Global B-School Ranking. The number of students who are considering doing an MBA is much more than the previous years. Through months of research we have gathered information on the institutes which have taken a lead in providing MBA facilities for students the world over. The access to gaining an MBA now is also much simpler owing to the progression technology has made. The subject options have also increased, thus giving students a wider range to choose from. Leaf through to check out who’s topping the charts in Business Administration. How many times have we heard of students complaining that they are not interested in studies and enough parents lamenting about it. Many who wish to study may not be fortunate enough to pursue it. There has always been an age old dilemma between conventional and non-conventional careers but we are in changed times today. Being in the midst of an age where people are straying away from the monotonous desk job and choosing or creating a career path that involves something they love doing, we bring you a few skills that might catch your interest. Ranging from hairstyling to gym training, our focus feature Skilled To Perfection tells you everything you need to know to get you interested. Farming is back in fashion with people setting up green houses and organic farms around cities. Even our own government is now focusing on skill development in non technical courses and setting up centres in rural areas to help the youth combat the job issue. So think about taking up these fun and kitschy career options which also help to bring in the moolah. From when we were little, we’ve always looked up to someone for guidance, right from holding their hand while crossing the road to making important life decisions. In Discovering Your Sensei, we talk about the modern day guru’s or mentors and showcase the relationship between a mentor and mentee in contemporary times. Its not necessarily a parent or a teacher but can be your next-door neighbour or an older friend who will help you through your tough times, withour any bias or judgement. e’ve all undergone the difficulties that one goes through when faced with the rather threatening concept of ‘What do you want to do with your life?’ from parents, peers and people alike. Though, at one point, it was almost conventional to choose a path that guaranteed a secure paycheck, the youth definitely wants to spread their wings and fly farther to see what they are capable of. There is need for more than just the doctors, the engineers and the chartered accountants in the world. Even CVs demand experience more than education and if you’re trained in the art of your choice, nothing better! Several industries have become very aware of the needs of the community and have hence adapted themselves to make profitable ventures out of the services that they can offer to their customer base. Then there are others who believe in the need for specialized skills to be enhanced whether it is a part of the primary, secondary or tertiary tiers of the economy. Here we mention a few vocational courses that you can take to hone your skills in your chosen field of expertise.

HAIRDRESSING
Who doesn’t love a good red carpet event, where some of the most beautiful and glamorous personalities adorn the evening with creations, that yet again set of a trail of inspiration for designers around the world? Even the ‘I-Woke-Up-Like-This’ look takes more than an hour’s worth of preparation; to indeed look like one tumbled out of bed. The beauty and fashion industry will forever be on the lookout for hairstylists and hairdressers who can make or break a look with their tools and talents. Hairstylists, primarily, need to posses knowledge in terms of cutting, dyeing, styling and overall care for hair. Courses and classes for the same, are offered through cosmetology and barbering programs that typically lead to certificates, although associate's degree programs in cosmetology do exist. These programs can take up to two years, and they can be found at beauty schools, technical and community colleges.
Certificate programs typically include far fewer courses than associate's degree programs; common topics in both programs include hair cutting, styling and coloring. Students usually gain supervised hands-on experience servicing clients in a salon setting. Graduates of these programs need to get licensed to practice as a hair stylist or barber. This entails meeting age requirements and passing state exams. University Orane Beauty Academy, New Delhi Indo- Canadian National Academy

Youth Issues
Our side of the generation gap
20 Youth Incorporated november 2015
One of the main problems faced by the Indian youth today is their relationships with their parents. It is not always easy to relate to the way their parents perceive a situation. This issue is of course, due to the age-old concept of the Generation Gap. Madhura Sansare relays the lesserheard side of this predominant issue; ours
W
e have all heard enough sentences starting with ‘In our time…’ from our older generations. Our entire college lives may just have been made up of that sentence to be honest. Everything from our waking and eating habits, who we choose for our friends, our career choices to even our academic goals are all under scrutiny. While that is understandable, it is the out-dated perspective that they are looked at from that creates all the problems that it does. Life has changed, and as youngsters, we aren’t usually able to convince our older generations of it. So let’s go into a more in-depth explanation of this issue, and maybe, just maybe, next time you are caught in a similar argument, you’ll know exactly what to say.
Career choices:
Indian parents have this very specific idea of how a career should be made. Firstly, you should always opt for a relatively safer field, with the social favourites being, of course, engineering, computers or medical. You should study really hard for these degrees because anything less than a 90% is obviously a crime. And while you’re studying you should remember that your occupation is being a student, and you should focus only on that. Once you complete your education, you should try to get a job, either through your college placements or on your own. Found a job? Great. Now stick to it. Keep getting your increments and your promotions there. After all, you know how hard it is to get a job. Why would you want to quit and try to find another one, right? Though this system made complete sense in earlier times, in today’s day and age, this system has more banes than boons. Because of the love for engineering and medical, today we have an abundance of people in these fields, so much so that an engineering student going abroad for an MBA to end up working in an international bank has become an extremely common phenomenon. The digital age that is now upon us has also created a plethora of
new careers and job opportunities, careers which were unheard of till now. The fields of music and dance and acting are not as unattainable as they were before either. And choosing any of these careers is not going to automatically equal to poverty and unemployment, as they would have us believe.
Social Lives:
Hailing from a time of 9-to-5 jobs and going home directly after work, the idea of a social life is quite foreign to our older generations. Just hanging out with friends after a long day at work, or if you are in college, hanging out even after college hours makes them queasy, only because they do not understand why we need it when they never did. After all, why wouldn’t you just want to come home to relax? This concern is not a result of anything but being born in a different time. Our older generations had more homely lives than we do right now. And of course they did. Nuclear families with working parents are a modern phenomenon. Our parents and elders, more often than not, came from joint families with an abundance of cousins to hang out with. It was a time when coming home did not equal to just sitting for dinner and TV with immediate family. And that is if your immediate family is at home when you come back. . It was due to these factors that the concept of spending time relaxing outside of the house wasn’t prevalent, and now that it is, it is still frowned upon by a generation that didn’t need it. Generation gap is not just a theory, it is a fact. Typical as it is, the age-old philosophy of ‘live and let live’ may be our only salvation here. Parents need to realise that things are done differently now, and every step their young child takes does not need to be similar to yours or even acceptable to you; and at the same time, the youth also needs to understand that the generation above theirs has a truckful of experience, and ignoring it may just be the stupidest thing you ever do. The most probable solution: perhaps meet them halfway? yi november 2015 Youth Incorporated 21

Slam the Gavel on Human Rights The judicial system worldwide has been construed for the primary reason of safeguarding the rights and liberties of the peoples of the world. But the most basic element of these rights are basic human rights. But how are they safeguarded? What do Human Rights entail? And essentially, what is Human Rights Law? Madhura Sansare delves into the details of this career option
S
ince the days of the lndus Valley Civilization, lndian culture has been the product of a synthesis of diverse cultures and religions that came into contact with the enormous lndian sub continent over a very long stretch of time. The lndian concept perceives the individual, the society and the universe as an organic whole. In such a diverse country, human rights form a judicial perspective has always been a complicated issue. It was for this reason, that the Indian judicial system has always been kept separate from the executive. The independence of the judiciary was one of the outstanding features of the Hindu judicial system. Even during the days of Hindu monarchy, the administration of justice always remained separate from the executive. It was, as a rille, independent both
22 Youth Incorporated november 2015
in form and spirit. It was the Hindu judicial system that first realized and recognized the importance of the separation of the judiciary from the executive and gave this fundamental principle a practical shape and form. India was a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A number of fundamental rights guaranteed the individuals in Part Ill of the lndian Constitution are similar to the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The judicially enforceable fundamental rights that encompass all seminal civil and political rights and some of the rights of minorities are enshrined in the Constitution. These include the right to equality, the right to freedom, the right against exploitation, the right to freedom of religion, cultural and educational
rights and the right to Constitutional remedies. Fundamental rights differ from ordinary rights in the sense that the former are inviolable. No law or administrative order can abridge or take them away. Any law, which violates any of the fundamental right, is void. The Supreme Court of lndia recognises these fundamental rights as 'Natural Rights' or 'Human Rights'. Though a part of the Indian Law System, Human Rights is such a vast topic, that it can very easily make up an entire sub-section of law study on its own, to the point where one can make a career as a human rights lawyer. But be careful, the abhorations and the criminial acts against human rights are far and plenty, specially in India, and a strong stomach is the primary criterion required off someone hoping to pursue this career.
Human Rights Education–Law Style
Following the foray into the vast subject of human rights, Surabhi Chatterjee, who is a Research Fellow at TISS, talks about the specifics of Human Rights Law in India Can you give us more information about the field in more depth? What categories fall under Human Rights Law? Human Rights Law involves working towards an equal and just society. It includes fighting for the rights of those who were denied their basic, fundamental rights, and challenging laws and policies that go against the ethos of the constitution. It also includes advocacy to bring about social justice. Categories that fall in Human Rights law include Women Rights, Child rights, Labour rights, Rights of Sexual Minorities, Rights of marginalised communities, Access to Justice , Criminal Justice System, Conflict law, Police Brutalities,
Freedom of Speech and Expression and a lot more. What university and course would you suggest to someone pursuing to make a career in this field in India? After a 5 year BA. LLB (Bachelors of Arts and Law) degree from Symbiosis Law School, Pune, I have done a Masters in Law (LLM.) in Access to Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. It is a new course (started 3 years back), and the first of its kind in India. The 5 year graduation law courses in India hardly touch upon the subject of human rights, which is why I believe it is important to get educated in the field of human rights.
What career prospects can one look forward to as a graduate in Human Rights Law? You could always litigate under a lawyer who takes up human rights cases. That would be a great learning opportunity, where you will learn about court procedures and how the law plays out in courts. Also, as I mentioned, there are many other organisations in the field of public policy and advocacy which require lawyers in their teams. You can also choose to become an academician, by teaching or pursuing research in an institution. Several jobs in forms of fellowships, research assistants, and other such research grants are also given in Institutions. That could be another option. yi

Scope:
The scope of a company secretary is becoming very broad with a growth in the corporate sector. While CS is considered a very reputed job, one of the main reasons why people opt for this career path is because of the high earning potential within this field. With experience and
TIME AND MONEY
"The course is quite heavy, coupled with a lot of practical training. But for someone who loves accounts and excels at legal work, this would be a good career for you", says Mr. Thakur. "A CS working in a big organization has excellent pay packages." If something about this job caught your attention, you could always read up more about it or ask a professional. If you have what it takes to multi- task and get the job done, brainstorm or be an advisor when called for, then give this profession a thought. yi november 2015 Youth Incorporated 25
In conversation with
Our editor-inchief, Nitish Shah in an exclusive chat with David E. Van Zandt, President of Parson’s New School, New York
That
Parson’s
Life
2012 and there were like 35-40 students and now there are around 400 students. Also, the institutional facilities have also grown. The other important change has been getting the right faculty here. We now have an excellent Dean, who is coming from Arizona State University, Mukesh Patel. Our New York faculty will come also over periodically. We also review the entire curriculum and all the syllabi that are used here. What qualities are you looking for in a student at ISDI? I think a student who’s really thinking creatively and conceptually. So often it is easy to focus so much on the technique and the execution of something, that you can forget how important the ideas are. So as we change day to day we want students who are really thinking ahead even if they don’t have all the tools at hand to do it, that they are thinking of new ideas and ways to shape the industry. When we are looking at applications, we are hoping to find that spark in a student of really wanting to expand in that way.
How did you choose Mumbai as a base for the Parsons School in India? We only want to be in places that have very deep cultural histories, that have some design activity in them. Cities like Paris, Shanghai and possibly Beirut are some examples of this. The other important thing is finding entrepreneurial partners; people who are real go-getters. Universities all over the world are interested but they are all pretty conservative. They want us to sign their MOU’s and they put it up on their website but further action is seldom taken.Executive Director Siddharth Shahani here really wanted to create something new and that is what interested us further. What changes have you seen in the school since its inception three years ago? The size of the institution and the amount of students has gone through a tremendous change. I first came here in Jan 26 Youth Incorporated november 2015
What is your application process for Parsons? Well, apart from the portfolio and the usual international examination requirements, we also ask for another piece called the Parson’s Challenge, where the student has to think of a common theme or an idea, create three visual pieces and then write about how those ideas are connecting. It’s in that moment where we get to see someone who’s really engaging in the space between the writing and the research and trying to put that forward in a visual sense. Is this Challenge also applicable to ISDI students here? Theirs is different. Their application criterions are slightly different. But you got to figure it out, whether it is a liberal arts student or a design student, you have got to find out if they have that spark. There are a lot of really good high school students out there, but only a percentage of them are what we are looking for. What type of employers do you usually have for placements? Retail companies, design shops, fashion or otherwise,
design companies and consumer goods companies looking for design students usually make up the mix at our career expos. So it’s a broad range. You see, design has become much more universal, much broader. It is not just making pretty things, and also it’s not just about technology. Every product, every idea has a human interface aspect to it. You have to relate. Aesthetics and functionality are the two aspects of good design. Your iPhone is always a good example. The iPhone does not have the latest technology necessarily. That’s not how it made itself. How it made itself was its user interface. It was so easy and almost intuitive to use. Even Samsung is now doing very well in that area. They are a good example now. They have a design group that is a 1000 strong. They don’t work for any specific design line products Samsung owns, they work across the board for Samsung, they are a resource of all the, this is a group that works to
make them more functional and more aesthetically attractive. Could you give us an example of how creativity and innovation can help bring a positive change in this world? Every year we run something called ‘The New Challenge’ for our students where we create teams to pick at social problems. It could be about kids on the street dealing with law enforcement, it could be disaster relief. The challenge is about finding a design solution to these problems and some of the projects that have come out of this have come out to be very viable products. It’s like social innovation. The winners usually get a small amount of money to launch their ideas continuing to after they graduate. But there are a lot of areas of social innovation where they could be profitable businesses too but they are also making a difference in the society. Social innovation is very different from social entrepreneurship, because
it’s mainly about designing solutions in comparison to just setting up a non-profit or anything. It’s designing solutions to very specific social problems in one form or another. What would be your message for the Indian youth? I think India’s future is very bright in the young people specifically mainly because it is an expanding economy and there is going to be so much opportunity for young people if they get on the right side of the curve. India’s got a lot of problems but I think to be a young person in India at the time is much more attractive than being a young person in Japan, where their economy is just fading. There is so much opportunity here, and we have seen it already to some extent. But my message to the young people of India coming of age now would be that they should take advantage of this. It will be of great importance and benefit in your futures. yi
"Design has become much more universal, much broader. It is not just making pretty things, and also it’s not just about technology. Every product, every idea has a human interface aspect to it. You have to relate. Aesthetics and functionality are the two aspects of good design."
Student Opinion
Niharika Mukhi, award-winning student at ISDI talks about her experience at the famed school. She is currently pursuing a diploma in interior design and aspires for a career in Bollywood set design. Why did you choose ISDI over Parson’s? ISDI is an amazing opportunity which came my way when I was completely clueless about what I wanted to do. Being its first batch, I won't deny that 'Parsons Mumbai' is what first made me apply for the institution. But the exposure ISDI has given us is fabulous. I already have my set carpenters and plumbers that I go to. I source materials from all corners of the city and use crafts such as inlay and wood carving which is possible only in a country like ours. ISDI is the perfect blend of having university experience, infrastructure and exposure as well as keeping you grounded to the society that you belong to and the people you design for. Do you see yourself pursuing a Masters at Parsons, New York? I definitely see myself pursuing my Masters at Parsons New York. I feel like ISDI has enabled me to move forward in terms of giving me more confidence in what I want to pursue and achieve. Most of us tend to be absolutely confused after the twelfth grade when we have an array of options and opportunities.

Workplace hacks
If this is the 5748th article about workplace hacks that you are reading and even after reading all the previous ones when it finally comes down to applying these hacks in real life if you just end up scrolling through your Facebook feed instead, then let Nilanjana Dutta tell you why you have come to the right place. This might just be the one, Ted. So, read on Mosby 28 Youth Incorporated november 2015
Organise your desk
If you feel like you just can’t think anymore or are all clogged up from the day’s work, then leave whatever you are doing and clean and organise your desk. It’s probably all the clutter that’s messing you up, of course in addition to your irritating boss and the distractive hot colleague.
Delete some tasks from your to-do list
Striking something off the to-do list is mini therapy and we often tend to have more stuff on it than we ever plan on doing. So, strike off the useless todos or maybe something that’s almost done and you will feel a lot more relaxed.
The Thumb and Pinkie break
If you need a quick distraction from your work you should never venture into the murky lands of social media where time flies at the speed of light. Why not try this tiny finger trick which makes your brain shake off the monotone you were subjecting it to and makes it active instead? It’s quite simple. Take your left hand, have your fingers in and your thumb up. Take your right hand, put all fingers in except the pinkie (little finger) and the thumb. Now switch roles of your hands. Try doing it faster. Also, it isn’t simple at all. So either you will get sick of not being able to do it and get back to work or you will feel like a superhero for being able to do it and get back to work.
Listen to guided meditation
If you are not the meditation type and find it difficult to make your mind go blank or just think it’s dumb, then you can listen to a guided meditation routine to help freshen your mind. There are plenty of 5-7 minute meditation routines available online. So put on some headphones and let your mind follow the words. Such routines are known to trigger creativity, release muscle tension and of course they create an envelope of peace in your chaotic office
environment by taking your mind off the task at hand.
an open space (which is not next to a pollution-loving factory).
Take a break
Tune into some comedy
If nothing works then just take a 10 minute break. According to research regular breaks are necessary for better productivity. You can even put a tiny alarm to remind you to take these 10 minute breaks every hour or two and eventually your mind will associate that sound with relaxation and the alarm itself will make you feel more relaxed. (Don’t put the same alarm tune as your morning alarm though, because you already hate that devil)
Stretch
Although, it is not recommended to do anything on your phone or laptop during your break after hours of working on the laptop as it is. But everyone has their own way to relax and if born in this technology driven world, a laptop screen brings you peace, then you go or it! Don’t let them tell you to close your eyes or breathe, tune into your own brand of meditation and watch some comedy on YouTube. It's a lot more relaxing, anyway.
There are hundreds of mini power routines to reenergize yourself and avoid your muscles from getting sore that you could do during your breaks. But let’s face it, we are neither that focused nor that disciplined to utilise our breaks so well and also we would look weird doing such healthy stuff while our co workers hog double cheese burgers. But what one can do is stretch your hands, arms, back and legs in a normal oh-I-am-sleepy pattern to feel more relaxed without looking any weirder than you already are.
Learn Stuff
Make some calls
Make a doodle of your boss, a caricature of your colleague or write a poem about the out of order coffee machine. It is not only a great way to unwind and take your mind off your work but it also is a future investment. You can keep all that art and compile it all and make it into a bestseller later and become a billionaire. And then send us a thank you note, maybe.
Try and contact a friend, a family member, your favourite aunt or your favourite chaiwala from college (he would be on Justdial now) and just chat. This will freshen you up by taking you out of your office space and bring a smile on your face that will last quite sometime after the break is over. And if your friend is a toobusy-for-the-world kind of corporate slave, make them read this article and coordinate breaks.
Breathe to Music
Put on your headphones and play some soothing music, could be Pink Floyd or a Bollywood love song whatever works for you and take 10 Yoga like deep breaths. It would be more beneficial if you are standing in
Not major stuff like JAVA or impossible things like who is the president of Algeria (It’s Abdelaziz Bouteflika, FYI) but simpler things like a little bit of French every day or something like juggling or maybe clicking (yes, there are people who can’t do that). These things can come in handy as first impressions go. Who knows what your next potential partner may like. (Although, we would suggest not to ‘click’ at people in an attempt to impress them)
Do something artistic
Snack
Take a walk and pick up a few munchies for when you feel those hungerpangs in the middle of an important assignment. This will prevent you from being distracted during crunch time and you also wont waste too much time looking for something to chew on. In the bargain you'll lift your tush off that seat. november 2015 Youth Incorporated 29

Executive MBAs are becoming increasingly popular as a greater number of people choose to work and study simultaneously. Here’s a reference guide on the EMBA What is an Executive MBA? An executive MBA, or EMBA, is a degree developed to meet the educational needs of managers and executives. Students remain employed while completing the degree, as the programme aims to complement their real-world experiences. An EMBA vs MBA MBA and EMBA are both business degrees. They only difference is in the kind of students they teach, the teaching methods and their duration. •While most MBA and EMBA courses require graduates, work experience is highly recommended for an MBA, but is compulsory for an EMBA. Some EMBA courses ask for a minimum of five years work experience and others are meant only for those in specific managerial posts. •An MBA degree is taught fulltime. The EMBA has classes on weekends and weeknights in order to accommodate the schedules of executives. Some EMBAs may also be conducted online. •An MBA degree typically takes two years to complete. An EMBA might take less than two years to finish. This, however, varies from institute to institute. •Often, employers fund an EMBA for their employees. Generally, employees with high potential and leadership skills are sponsored to do an EMBA programme.
cutive mba •Programme content modules taught in an EMBA course are similar to those taught in an MBA programme. These include business economics, business laws, marketing, finance and accounting, operations management, strategic management, human resources.. Candidate eligibility Candidates accepted into an EMBA programme are usually in the mid-stage of their career or at a higher-level. As with an MBA, the EMBA also accepts graduates in any field. It is not just businessmen and executives who study for an EMBA, even doctors and lawyers are known to have completed EMBAs. The pros •Acceptance rates for EMBA programmes are higher than those of traditional MBA programmes •EMBA aspirants need not take a GMAT test. •EMBAs accommodate the busy schedules of working executives, enabling them to manage work and their education at the same time The cons •Loss of free time as work, commute and study clog up schedules •Fewer EMBA programmes than MBA programmes, so less choice for aspiring students •EMBAs are viewed by some recruiters as inferior to MBAs due to their part-time nature Conclusion An MBA degree and an EMBA degree have been designed keeping two very different types of students in mind. An MBA student is usually someone who has graduated from college in the last three to five years. For this student, the degree is more

intensive owing to lack of extensive experience. On the other hand, an EMBA student is someone who has been working in his field for at least ten years and while he might be out of touch with classroom learning, he makes up for it with ample experience. However, both courses are rigorous and demanding in their own ways. An MBA graduate and an EMBA graduate usually cater to different job markets as they are both at different

stages of their career; thus, it is not common for an EMBA graduate and an MBA graduate to be pitted against one another for the same position. So, if you’ve just started working and are keen on gaining a competitive edge, then an MBA is for you. But, if you’re already at an advanced stage in your career and are aspiring to take on a senior position, while holding onto that day job, then an EMBA would be a more feasible option. novemBER 2015 Youth Incorporated 37

available to the student online. Combination programmes: This course has a blend of online courses as well as some conducted in the classroom.
The pros
• Allows you the flexibility of working while studying. • The advantage of making money while studying. • You can own a global degree without the extra expenditure. • The admission policy is less rigid as compared to full time MBA courses. • All you need is an internet connection and the will to learn.
The cons
• The biggest drawback is that there is no human connect. Lack of networking since there is no interaction with professionals or other students. • The online course requires completion of a certain number of log-in hours in order to complete the course. • No chance to go industry visiting or networking with important people from the industry. • No classroom pressures and so the student might get de-motivated to continue on his own. • Not as significant as a full time MBA.

1. Recruiter Perception – Identical surveys were sent to recruiters worldwide. The recruiters were asked to rate the institutes that they were most likely to recruit from. The recruiters were also asked to rate the students they have recruited from specific business schools on several criteria including leadership potential and strategic thinking. 2. Diversity of Students – The institutes were asked to report the total number of students on campus and what percentage of the students were international and speak two or more languages. Gender diversity of the students was also considered. 3. Diversity of Faculty – The institutes were asked to report the total number of faculty on campus and what percentage of the faculty was international, hold a doctorate degree and accredited with their own publishing material. Gender diversity of faculty was also considered. 4. Innovation of Programmes – We considered the different ways to construct degree programmes as well as the choice students have in terms of selecting electives. 5. Actual Methodology
We sent invitations to 1550 institutes. Institutes were provided a password using which they could send us their completed survey online. They were asked to answer questions relating to full time faculty, career service, student and program information and all the factors listed above. We also contacted current students and alumni of the institutes and asked them to rate specific statements which were pertaining to the factors we considered in this ranking. All the institutes preferred to send the survey links to their students and alumni directly. Over 14800 recruiters were sent emails with a survey. The recruiter list was prepared from the responses of the institutes and also included internationally well known recruiters. The recruiters were asked to enlist institutes that they were likely to recruit from. Below is a summary of the factors and the weight-age given to each factor when we ranked the institutes Each factor was made up of a set of questions. The total percentage attributed to that factor was based on the average score of the responses multiplied by the assigned weightage. We then totalled the score from all factors and sorted the scores from highest to lowest. The institute with the highest score was ranked first.

HISTORY What could be the career options with history? Sarah
Academia / teaching, tourism and research are usual career avenues for history graduates/ postgraduates. Occasionally historians are employed to research and write an official naval or military history, the biography of a famous person or the history of a monument/ region. Studying history also teaches you a range of skills - investigation and research techniques, analytical skills, management and presentation of information, writing skills and the ability to think critically, which can be excellent preparation for careers in law, library and information science, publishing, civil services, in administration, human resources management, in films and television, etc.

GERMANY How do I go about pursuing a PhD in Germany? Rathish G A master’s degree would make you eligible to apply for a PhD in Germany. There are two ways of approaching it. The traditional approach for individual doctoral studies (takes 3 to 5 years) involves identifying a supervisor at a German university who is willing to guide your research. An initiative to identify a topic in your research field is required. The structured doctoral programmes are internationally oriented, and conducted mostly in English leading to a PhD in about three years with the supervision carried out by several university teachers.

AFTER PLUS TWO SCIENCE My son is to complete 12th PCM next year. He plans on joining the merchant navy or taking up B Arch, but he is not interested in BTech. I am confused how to guide him. Manohar A career in the merchant navy demands physical and mental strength and capability, a unique work life, so your son must understand the demands and assess whether he wishes to join as a marine engineer ( via a specific marine engineering degree or mechanical engineering) or in navigation through a nautical science (BSc) degree. Admission to B Arch requires qualifying an architecture aptitude test. He could consider applying not just for BArch, Marine Engineering, and Nautical Science/ Technology courses but also Btech/ BE, BS (IISc) and BS-MS degree courses (at IISERs, NISER, etc.) plus Bdes (at IIT Bombay/ Guwahati) because the entry processes would require the same skillset and preparation. An informed career decision requires awareness of all the possibilities, but also appreciating the comparative long-term career and advancement opportunities.

Storytelling through
rhyme and rhythm While going through the chaos and bustle of the city, if you cross ways with individuals reading out their letterings in parks, local trains or coffee shops to appreciative claps and hoots of an audience, don’t be startled. Its just one of many poetry clubs with zealous members that has been burgeoning in this vast metropolis of ours. Parth Shah delves into the theory of this new emerging societal norm for an attempt to incite the love of spoken word in your lives.
54 Youth Incorporated november 2015
S
poken word poetry is the new flavor of metropolitan cities. And to taste it more efficiently, the young amateur poets across the country have taken to forming poetry groups. These groups have taken poetry out of the stereotypical setting of conventional readings and literary festivals, of kavisammelans and mushairas and in a sense, democratized or liberated it. These fanatics brought together by a communal adoration for rhythm and metre, aim to create a stage outside academia and established circles to indulge in unending sagas told through poetries. Fledgling poetry clubs like Mulaqaat and Lump in the Throat in Delhi, Loquations and The Poetry Club in Mumbai, The Young Poets Club in Chennai, Yuva Gosthi in Bangalore and Bottola in Kolkata have taken poetry out of publications and strewn them into circles and groups. The drift of poetry clubs isn’t constrained to Hindi or English. Regional languages like Urdu and Kashmiri among others are seeing something of efflorescence with young writers too. These happenings have begun to draw large audiences generous with feedback.
Mind your poetry
Poetry wins over all 22 official languages of this country and many more that are spoken on the thoroughfares, but there is definitely one language that bonds all poets and that is the language of peace. Mumbai’s poets may arrive at it through different routes, define it in varying ways and seem to live in different worlds, but there is no denying that a common ground exists somewhere, even if it remains hidden on most instances. There are a few in this city that relish in the presence of poets and venerate and appreciate their art and provide them their ear but there are only a few that get highly stirred and venture out to write poetry of their own. Noveau poets need to realize that poetry is a way to expression; it’s just like talking. One need not always think about the rules of grammar while talking and sentence formation and in the same way, new poets must not always think of poetic devices and rhyme schemes while telling a story through their poetry but should just break free and get writing. On the other hand all of the above are essential nonetheless and rules have to be followed especially at poetry slams.
Poetry slams
Imagine you are given a ground, more precisely a stage to speak out, speak not just your poem but also your thoughts, not necessarily in rhyme! Poetry clubs offer just the right amount of escape
for the youth of our country to express their thoughts through poetry. This is what happens through poetry slams. In a poetry slam, members of the audience are chosen by a host to act as judges for the event. In the national slam, there are five judges, but smaller slams generally have three. After each poet presents, each judge grants a score to that poem. Scores generally range between zero and ten. The highest and lowest are dropped, giving each performance a rating between zero and thirty points. Props, costumes, and music are always forbidden in slams, distinguishing this category from its immediate antecedent, performance poetry. Additionally, most slams enforce a time limit of three minutes (and a grace period of ten seconds), after which a poet's score may be docked according to how long the poem exceeded the limit. Before the competition begins, the host will often bring up a "sacrificial" poet, whom the judges will score in order to calibrate their judging. A single round at a standard slam consists of performances by all eligible poets. Most slams last multiple rounds, and many involve the elimination of lower-scoring poets in consecutive rounds. An elimination rubric might run 8-4-2; eight poets in the first round, four in the second, and two in the last. Some slams do not eliminate poets at all. Poetry, spoken word or any other form is not just an art form. If done right, it can form a revolution. A country like ours, who has tasted a revolution fueled further by the penning of Vir Savarkar and Rabindranath Tagore, it is highly dissasfying to note the loss of this much-adored art form. Therefore, we highly encourage the youth to step out of their comfort zones and write, they need not read their poetry out every time but, make sure they have expressed themselves completely in script. Poetry clubs eliminate stage fear and give youngsters the confidence to state their opinion and defend it. Moreover, one should remember that poetry is an art and it has to be preserved, one cannot construct museums to preserve them but encouraging it is surely the way to go.

The Unsaid Poet’s Society
Filled with wanderlust and a love for words that provoke your soul, Mayank Susngi gives us a peek into his life as a spoken word poet, and what inspires him to weave his words into the art that is poetry. When did you first realize that spoken word poetry was something that you’d be passionate about? I think Spoken word revealed itself like a cupboard with too many drawers. Drawers which I couldn't open for the longest time. Each performance would make me feel like an anxious kettle waiting to boil over. It still does, I think, but one day you find a key to one drawer and it fits the rest as well. How much of your work, would you say, is based on people you’ve actually met, or anecdotes that have been borrowed from your life? Do you consider them as good content for poetry? The initial desire to write is like a bonfire which you keep fuelling with the tinder of memories and flints 56 Youth Incorporated november 2015
of experiences. It's very difficult to write about something you don't feel strongly about. So, yes a lot of my work is deeply personal and comes from my own experiences. They're not only great content but can also be therapeutic when you allow yourself to be vulnerable and spill the insides of your mind in front of an audience. How popular do you think is the spoken word poetry culture in India? Spoken word while popular in the US for decades is quite a recent trend in India having picked up only in the last few years. But of late, a lot of Slams and Open-Mics are held regularly giving multiple opportunities for anyone interested to come listen or perform themselves. It's still quite a niche audience, mostly consisting of those who perform themselves
but things are quickly changing. In a few years, earning a living off performances might become a reality. How do you deal with a negative reaction to one of your works while it was being presented? I talk about things that bother me, and often while performing, it's evident that you're making quite a few people uncomfortable in the audience. But, then that's precisely the point of any art, isn't it? Of disturbing the comfortable, and comforting the disturbed. Talking about depression especially is a taboo that I feel needs to be broken. I don't think I've ever gotten a negative reaction but when I write in Hindi or Urdu or Bengali, I've had people come up to me and say my grammar at best resembles scrambled eggs.
Cult of
Poetry
Trupthi Shetty and Ankita Shah, founders of Mumbai’s most popular poetry club, effectively named The Poetry Club, Mumbai, talk to Madhura Sansare about their innovative social venture. What is the story behind The Poetry Club? Both of us began writing regularly towards the end of our Bachelor’s degree. As we were studying to become CAs, our only source of learning poetry was reading it. Eventually, we started to look for poetry spaces where we could get feedback on what we were writing. On not finding any poetry clubs or groups, we decided to start our own. We were especially interested in spoken word poetry. Our inspirations included Sarah Kay and Taylor Mali. And thus, TPC was born, out of the need for spaces where amateurs like us could share poetry and get critical feedback, without being judged. We began our first session at Kaifi Azmi Park in Juhu, with 7-8 people. Can you give us a brief idea about how The Poetry Club works? We have a mailing list of more than 600 poets, which is growing steadily. We have monthly poetry sessions where we invite all of these people to read, share, critique, and enjoy poetry. Usually we have an attendance
of 40-45 poets in a session - these include poets in Hindi, English, Urdu, sometimes Punjabi and Marathi. In addition to the sessions, we also curate performance events in association with various cultural organizations like Lil Flea, Kitsch Mandi, High Street Phoenix, Culture Shoq. We've also collaborated with Alliance Francaise and conducted poetry writing workshops for them. What types of poetry are usually showcased at The Poetry Club? The types of poetry read at TPC are quite diverse. We have people like Vivek Sharma, who is an engineer and writes sonnets. We have a doctor, Siddharth Warrier, who can rhyme effortlessly and loves experimenting with forms, we have people like Biswadip Sen and Imroz Alam who write beautiful ghazals in Hindi/ Urdu, we have people like Saurabh Jain, Prakriti Kargeti, Varun Garg, Tripurari Kumar Sharma who have made us realize just how soul-stirring Hindi poetry is, we have Ramneek Singh who writes Hindustani free verse and we have many, many spoken word poets.
Have you noticed a change in the way people perceive poetry? Yes, in tiny ways. With Faiz and Gulzar poems being put to music in mainstream cinema, with publishing houses being more open and welcoming to publish poetry, with the growing audience in poetry events, with corporates approaching us wanting to promote their products through poetry, we're moving towards a society that is learning that they all have the ability to understand and appreciate art, that it will resonate with them, if only they lend a ear. Can you tell us a little about some of your upcoming events? On 18th October 2015, we're organising "Undoing Gender", a pan India collaborative project to voice against gender stereotyping and to reflect upon a society without gender norms - in association with No Country For Women (NCFW), Bring Back The Poets, Delhi and Airplane Poetry Movement, and Culture Shoq. The event will happen at the Hive from 5pm to 11pm.

Show me the money (and the law)
On 29th September 2015, the Android universe witnessed something historic. Google launched not one but two new smartphones on its Nexus line, namely the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P, the latter is now its flagship smartphone. Google also went on to unveil the much awaited Chromecast dongle along with the dainty Pixel C tablet.
I know what you did last Nexus
The new Nexus phones (5X and 6P) are touted to be Google’s “comeback” to the smartly-priced-Android-smart phone market. Last year Google left many Nexus fans disappointed with the launch of Google Nexus 6 that was immensely overpriced for a segment that is already crowded. The Nexus 6 was originally launched at an exorbitant Rs. 44000, something that can easily put off any price sensitive Indian consumer. Looking back Google is making doubly sure that they don’t make the same (expensive) mistakes again.
Marshmallow sweet
The freshest software update to roll in from Google is the Android 6.0 Marshmallow which will apparently leave you wanting “s’more”. Marshmallow features the (improved) answer to Apple’s Siri, the Google Now on Tap. Here’s how Google defined and illustrated Now on Tap in a blog post: When you tap and hold the home button, Google gives you options that are a best guess of what might be helpful to you in the moment. But if you need something specific, you can also get Google to help by saying "Ok Google" from any screen, and any app. For example, if you’re listening to Twenty One Pilots on Spotify, you can say "Ok Google, who’s the lead singer" and get your answer right away. This sweet update also packs with it a new battery saving feature called – Doze. This nifty battery fix uses built in sensors to figure out when your phone is idle and consequently slow down background processes, syncing or literally anything that drains your battery! Android backing up and moving between devices just got easier too! Whenever you’re connected to WiFi now your device will back up your data quietly and securely to your Google Drive account so it’s all waiting for you there when you lose/change your phone! 58 Youth Incorporated November 2015

Relationships
Discovering Your
Sensei
May it be the fond exchange of words between Batman and Alfred, or the more intense physical training battles between Master Shifu and Po, mentors have been an integral part of a lot of relationships that we have witnessed, either in our favourite childhood shows and movies, or perhaps in our lives as well. Nancy Varghese takes a look at the mentor-mentee equation in contemporary times
62 Youth Incorporated november 2015
SUCCESS IN YOUR FIELD A mentor could be someone in the same academic or professional field that you have chosen and may have achieved laurels or credibility for the kind of work they have done in the same. In this case, the communication barrier is solved and you can interact with your mentor on the same level that you wish to, not needing the effort to explain your problems with them. Taking a look at the kind of work they have done, deriving insights from their method of working etc, will enable you to carve your career based on similar principles. PERSONAL SUCCESS REGARDLESS OF FIELD Not every mentor that you pick will happen to work/study in the same academic or professional background as you. But their work ethics, qualities that make them a leader, fantastic people skills or even the amount of honesty and transparency that they carry themselves with, may be characteristics that attract them as an ideal mentor to you. So, you may not engage in regular conversation with the person or always exist on the same plane with them, but their core values make them someone you would want to model yourself after. SOCIAL MEDIA CONNECT Pertaining to the tech savvy world that we live in today, it is not uncommon to have
a mentor who has excellent social media skills that is worth aping. These individuals ensure that they stand up for everything that they believe in, may it be a strong voice opposing the various bans in the country or an opinion on the judicial system. You can choose to follow them on sites like Linked In and Facebook, among others, and while striking a conversation with them, assessing the kind of image they hold with the public ad get a general view of what people think of them. GOALS: PROFESSIONAL OR PERSONAL Before you go ahead with picking a mentor, make sure you are clear on the kind of goals that you have in mind and on what you need guidance with. It will not be wise to pick one mentor for both your personal and professional goals because while one person may be the absolute star of his professional field, his personal qualities may not be the ones you are searching for to imbibe in yourself. Same goes for your personal goals as well. RELATIONSHIP QUOTIENT Since time immemorial, teachers have been considered as the perfect mentors, primarily because of the relationship they share with their students, one that is free of bias of any kind. These days, however, a relationship with your mentor has ventured beyond that of a classroom. One must take a call on the kind of person you wish to take guidance from. It could be a family member or a friend that has played a significant part in your upbringing and
nurtured the growing years of your life. That way, you are sure of the decisions they encourage you to take, as they’ve been around you long enough to know what’s good for you and what isn’t. At the same time, it can also be beneficial for you to have the perspective of someone not belonging to your circle, as this will bring in fresh viewpoint when it comes to solving your problems and honing your skills. EXPERT CONSULTATION With new-age career prospects blooming in all corners of the world, you can also opt for career/guidance counselors who will ensure you stick to your goals and achieve them with optimum time and resources. If you don’t mind spending money on the highest level of professional guidance and counseling in the field, there exist a horde of specialists who will start from making short-term and long-term goal assessment methods, to perhaps a day-to-day evaluation of determining the amount of time you will require to achieve all of the things you aim to, by a particular period of time. yi

Misconceptions of Contraception
Residing in a country where the word ‘sex’ evokes death stares and hushed voices, it is integral for the youth to grasp the concept of contraception along with healthy sex education. It’s easy to play the blame game and cry war over young adults being over-promiscuous, but there is a deeper understanding necessary in order to ensure a healthy discussion on such issues
G
iven the day and age we live in, we have all been exposed to the kind of treatment that even the mention of sexual acts gets, when it is spoken out loud. And while some of us may be absolutely okay with discussing something this ‘taboo’ out in the open, there is a general consensus that doesn’t believe in or is even remotely ready to accept the same. In the 64 Youth Incorporated november 2015
midst of the moral debates that we engage in on the matter, what is forgotten, is the need for the older generation to guide the youth in the right way and advise them on the perils of unprotected sex and the consequences that arrive with the same. Contraception and practice of safe sex is imminent and of utmost importance. Instead of being seen as the bad guy for putting your
ward on house arrest just because they decide to lie to you and spent time with their significant other, perhaps spending a little more time explaining the pros and cons of intimacy to them can reap a lot more mutual respect and at the same time, ensure that aggression and disobedience on their part can be avoided altogether. Make sure your child is confident enough to discuss personal matters with you.
The Contraception Revolution contraception is generally under the doctors’ supervision and patient knows. Point of View
The Dark Abyss That Is Depression A very prevalent disorder in today’s day and age, depression usually follows a feeling of dark despair and emptiness. Nisha JamVwal talks about the signs of depression and how to combat it.
66 Youth Incorporated november 2015
I
am at a stunning beach resort and today something quite incredible and unexpected occurred at breakfast. The seemingly happy and delightful chef treating me to all the delicacies of the famous hotel opened up about her life very candidly and artlessly I found her telling me about a dark phase not two months ago where she faced severe depression that threatened her relationships, career and life. "How exactly do you define depression? I queried her."It's a claustrophobic dark sense of impending doom where you nearly feel like you are alone locked in a room with difficulty in your breathing. It's a terrible phase I went through and regular day to day functioning was a struggle. I almost found it difficult to conduct my relationships rationally at work and home." Did I find the chef weak, or a lesser person for her admissions and candid chat? Quite the contrary. I thought
her brave and open hearted post our conversation with the courage to face her malaise head-on and even discuss it openly. Her lack of self blame and shame was endearing. The societal stigma The astounding public admission by fashion designer Sabhyasachi Mukherjee recently about his depression was a coincidence and was still fresh in my mind. He has publicly admitted to be dealing with depression for years- since he was 16. He tried to take his own life three times, has been an over achiever and an idealist and says that he found no succour from the selfish city life which is not fit for an idealist, he shared. He feels that our education system and our parents do not equip us with survival training for relationships and surviving disappointments in love, relationships and life. Here at this verdant resort, the chef vehemently agreed when I shared Sabyasachi’s admissions with her.
My pet peeve is how society still looks at depression as a stigma. It is so important to recognise that depression wrecks relationships and working life and that it is absolutely not shameful to share periods of downswing and sadness and to seek support. I believe it is most important to get professional help to cope with struggles, relationship setbacks or even disappointments. To look out for signs that this could be a long term problem is important too. Deal with depression Everyone goes through the blues and finds life overwhelming occasionally. The important thing to do is to see if coping and getting through your day is causing you anxiety and despair and if a feeling of emptiness is becoming a pattern. To realise that it is not only a malaise in our lives but very traumatic for our spouse, parents or siblings to live with us in a depressive phase helps us to get out and seek help. And
while meditation, exercise and good nutrition are excellent routes to help recovery, professional help is a must or like Sabyasachi or the Chef shared with me, you could unknowingly take your own life. It could be a chemical imbalance in the body resulting in extreme reactions to minor upheavals and you could lose some valuable work and alienate friends and colleagues. Look out for symptoms of depression and address it immediately. A loss of appetite, feeling overwhelmed or apathetic with just going through the day, fear of people, uncalled for aggression or a sense of recurring restlessness, a hopeless helpless feeling often accompanied with exhaustion, the inability to enjoy activities or people who you enjoyed some time ago, that general sense of impending doom- these are all signs to look out for that will take over your life and not allow you to enjoy relationships and need to be addressed immediately. november 2015 Youth Incorporated 67

Makeup is tricky. When applied correctly it can make you look like a prettier version of princess Diana but when applied like a 3 year old with a crayon, it can make you look, well, you can try it and see for yourself how exactly. The lip colour lookalikes
Lip balm, Lip gloss, Lipstick
The face cream lookalikes Primer, Foundation, Concealer
The primer is the base for foundation or any kind of face makeup. It can even be worn on its own if you want a (fake) fresh no makeup I-woke-up-like-this look. The foundation evens out your skin tone and covers all the discolouration, redness or dullness that your face may have. But using a subtle amount is necessary to avoid going from perfect to patchy. Whereas the concealer as the name suggests is for fixing small troublesome areas like discolouration under the eyes or around the nose, blemishes and any other spots you find annoying. It is not an alternative for foundation and rather works well only after a thin coat of that.
The lip balm provides a slight shield against all the chemical that your lip colour has and smoothens your lips so that the lip colour spreads evenly and stays longer. The lip gloss contrary to the name isn’t always glossy. It is just more fluid than a lipstick and stays longer unless you lick it off absentmindedly because of its strawberry or mint flavour. The lipstick is thicker and provides a more solid colour to your lips but due to its slightly more sticky character it wears off quickly as you talk, bite or sip through the day.
The cheek cousins Blush and bronzer
It’s is not the 90s anymore and the women don’t blush as much. So if you are also the type who last blushed three years ago, then adding a little colour to your cheeks may just fix that. The blush works well with lighter skin tones whereas the bronzer is for a more wheatish complexion or for creating a sun kissed look.
The eye sisters
Eyeliner and Eye shadow It’s difficult to go wrong with these because they look very different and specify their purpose very well. The eye shadow highlights the eye lid, whereas the mascara is for adding volume to the eye lashes and the eye liner or a kajal stick is to define your eyes.

Homosexuality on TV was limited to being a comic relief or a supporting role with no prominent storyline. With time slots filled with drama and melodrama and more, soap operas outright neglected the stories that need to be told. Nilanjana Dutta lists out the shows that changed all that and gave drama a new angle with their portrayal of homosexuality
Empire
Modern family
This show’s hilarious portrayal of family ties and feuds over a period of time is bang on. Probably one of the first shows to portray your next-door-gay-couple, its depiction isn’t completely original or realistic and tends to get a little stereotypical, where the makers of the show play at the advantage of being a comedy TV series.
Orange is the new black
As our lead, Piper, is told that she does ‘not have to have lesbian sex’ by her counsellor, it mockingly confirms that this isn’t your regular vulgar, violence driven prison drama with lesbian shower rapes from yesteryear. Here, our convict is spending 14 months in prison for carrying drugs for her lesbian lover years ago, while her current fiancé runs around trying to get her supplies in prison. The show successfully represents queer women as part of a larger spectrum beyond sexuality.
t h e
This show dwells in unchartered territory with a highly diverse lead cast of LGBT characters in a grand multi reality sci-fi. If the compelling storyline of eight individuals mysteriously connecting at a mental and physical level while being hunted by an unknown organisation is not enough for us to binge, the unique portrayal of a cis-gender and transgender love story and other such untold narratives, will keep your torrent busy.

How to get away with Murder
This legal drama treats homosexuality with an ease matched to the general portrayal of heterosexuality, neither claiming it to be central or required to the storyline but rather a by product which doesn’t need to be fussed over.

t h e
A show fuelled by plot points like power, sex, money, drugs and violence is all that was expected of this story centred on a hip hop mogul’s lineage. It manages to go a notch above everyone’s expectation with a gay character which, central to the storyline, isn’t a stereotype or a comic relief. Starting from hateful slurs being directed at the gay character to flashbacks of him being stuffed into a garbage can by his father, the hip hop legend, brings out a raw culture where masculinity is equal only to heterosexuality and homosexuality is a sinful aberration.

Everyone is trying to something different these days, to stand out and get noticed. These few musicians went a step too far in that direction; so far that they almost left the category of ‘music’ and landed in ‘noise’. While the world was busy admiring the Taj Mahal, the true testament of love was hidden in the village of Gehlore, where a man broke down a mountain because his wife couldn’t reach the hospital, and died after falling from it. It is the story of a boxer who went on to become the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each of the six world championships, with no support from her parents, a coach disappointed with her decision to marry, untimely pregnancy and India’s lack of support for women athletes. The story continued as Priyanka Chopra got an unforeseen taste of method acting, when people instead of appreciating the effort she put in and the heartfelt performance she delivered, pointed out that she didn’t look like Mary Kom enough.

With a power packed performance by Farhan Akhtar and beautiful direction by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, the movie truly lives up to the life of the legend.

Paan Singh Tomar
The story of an athlete from the Indian Army who fell prey to circumstances and became the most feared dacoit in Chambal. It narrates a sad, yet dramatic tale, of athletic triumph fading in a foreground of India’s inability to support its sport stars who are not cricketers, and a lax rural governance. With Irrfan Khan as Tomar, you live the life he lived and fear the way he was feared at the same time.

The name Phoolan Devi rang many bells across villages in the 1980s after the only female dacoit of Chambal ever, massacred 22 men of Behmai village as revenge, as they belonged to the same caste as her rapists. Bandit Queen manages to capture the essence of Phoolan Devi as a product of cast prejudices, poverty, unsuccessful child marriage, sexual abuse at the hands of dacoits and many other such factors which haunts rural India.

In a world of about 7 billion people, some people don’t just live and die, they have a story worth being told. Biographies are an attempt to retell the legend of these lives. Nilanjana Dutta lists out the instances when Bollywood hit pause on its dance numbers to tell a tale which left a mark upon the world
There are stories about our world, there are stories about sci-fi world, and then there are some stories about what our world can succumb to. Nilanjana Dutta lists out the books that narrate the possibility of the post apocalyptic world and what kind of laws and rules they might have to tame and sustain the untameable human race

New members are added after fixed periods of time, which brings in the first ever girl. The maze runners must survive the maze, decipher the world they are trapped in, escape it or embrace it, one can only find out at the other end.
Matched by Ally Condie
In this post apocalyptic, perfect seeming world, there is a pretence of peace as the government dictates what you eat, how much you work, how much you exercise and who you ‘love’. A take on the social and practical categorization that dictates love even in the current society, this book gives a new angle on love and how it’s worth the fight.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
The story of a dystopian society where everyone turns ‘pretty’ at the age of 16 by undergoing extreme plastic surgery. It is not a choice or preference, it is the law. The story is a take on the current scenario of body shaming and artificial beauty treatments, as the protagonist’s refusal turns into a revolution.

A dystopian society divided into five factions, and a girl who fits into all five. With a motto, ‘Faction before blood’, the government forces people to break familial bonds and choose the faction that suits them right. This page turner takes you into a different world with hidden glimpses of your own, where everybody is made to fit the mould of the society and being different is almost against the law.

LOCO CHINO, MUMBAI
Cuisine: Chinese, Mexican and Thai Bites and Booze: This joint has a soothing ambience, strongly resembling the Mexican culture coupled with soft Mexican music playing in the background. We started off with the assorted dim sums which were well cooked and slightly bland. The Spinach Dim Sums are a veggies delight – green coloured and stuffed with spinach and nuts which give the right amount of crunch. The Edamame Truffle was beautifully cooked and extremely gooey, but also very bland. The Veg Spicy, Crystal and 5 Spice celery which was stuffed with green vegetables and corn, was made to perfection. Their Mexican twist in beverages was tangy and sweet. For the main course, the Red Thai Curry and Rice was phenomenal. Fab or Drab: The warm interiors and the lip smacking food is enough reason for you to visit. This joint doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket and still manages to give you great food and even better dessert Gayatri Chamber, Dr. VB Gandhi Marg, Opposite, OneForbes, Fort, Mumbai - Pearl Mathias

Cuisine: Asian, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai Bites and Booze: A quintessential PanAsian joint, 38 Bangkok Street does very well with its traditionalism. They start you off with a lovely cup of jasmine tea and some of the best kimchi we have ever tasted, before the starters arrive. Their mouth-watering Khao Suey soup is a perfect blend of flavours, with each flavor enunciated without overpowering the other flavours. A vegetarian food joint, they serve a wide range of delectable dimsums to choose from, like mixed veg, shiitake, and bean curd among others. We highly recommend their Java Lotus Stem and cottage cheese Sambai Bajak for that perfect mouthful. Fab or Drab: Tucked away in the heart of the city, this quaint Pan-Asian cuisine is sure to blow your mind away with its delicious food and fabulous service. We would suggest you pace yourself here though; their portion sizes are unbelievably generous, especially for their price range. Windsor Chambers, Cawasji Patel Street, Fort Central, Fort, Mumbai - Madhura Sansare
EAT THAI, MUMBAI Cuisine: Thai, Asian Bites and Booze: Eat Thai welcomed us with their brand new 5 course set lunch menu that includes soup, salad, curries, rice/noodles and dessert. The Som Tom Salad brings the right amount of tang and zest that you expect to clean your palate, with peanuts adding the right amount of crunchy aftertaste that you enjoy. The Thai favourite, Phak Bua Crob (crispy lotus stem and scallion tossed in tamarind sauce) doesn’t disappoint one bit, and the perfectly textured coconut base of the Green Thai Curry paired with Jasmine Rice leaves your appetite craving for more. While the curry and the rice add rich and creamy tones to your meal, the Phad Thai gives you the adequate spice that an Indian palate is very accustomed to, giving you a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The extremely satiating gluten free chocolate cake is the sinfully beautiful end to a very well proportioned meal. Fab or Drab: The ambience is a stark contrast to the cuisine they serve, but is a great place to take your friends and family, if you plan to indulge and even splurge a little more than usual. 8/9, Gasper Enclave, Pali Hill, Bandra West, Mumbai - Nancy Varghese

Another ban story
This Ambuja cement advertisement shows The Great Khali facing an unusual problem faced by him in his hometown: whatever he tries to do, he damages something as the walls aren’t built with good quality cement. This hilarious portrayal of one of the strongest men has hit all the right notes.
“EkEhsaas – Chaudavin Ki Raat”a concert by Pakistani singer Ustad Gulam Ali, which was supposed to be held in Pune and Mumbai as a tribute to maestro Jagjit Singh’s fourth death anniversary, was called off. This became another addition to the ban culture of democratic India this month.
Being the change
8-year-old Abhinav’s letter to the Prime Minister, stating the problem he faced taking 45 minutes to reach his school which was only 3 kilometres away from his house, pointed out an important issue of under construction of the flyover over a railway crossing. His letter grabbed the attention of the PM (who asked concerned authorities to look into the matter), hence proving to be an inspiration to those who want change.
Writers return SahityaAkademiaward SahityaAkademi award being an
autonomous and secular institution does not hold any significance to the on-going rightist and leftist politics. So the question arises as to why the writers are returning the award, when the government has no association with the institution. SahityaAkademi award is given as an appreciation for the quality of writing and literature in our country, as some writers have pointed out this move can jeopardise the authority of the SahityaAkademi. Will this attempt be successful by returning such a prestigious award?

Modi meets Zuckerberg
Prime minister’s celebratory hug, his emotional interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg kept the nation glued to their TVs and phones. This also steered an Internet.org controversy (with people adopting the tricolour tint to their profile pictures), which was later justified as a coding error; sigh of relief to many in opposition to Internet.org.
