Will Lemke Era Begins with Optimism The 2009 season commences a new era in the 14-year history of the Youngstown State women’s soccer program as Head Coach Will Lemke takes over the reigns. Lemke, who has won 84 games in just eight seasons as a head coach, inherits a team that returns 17 letterwinners, six starters, five of its top six scorers, a school-record holding goalkeeper and an all-league defender. Coupled with seven talented newcomers, the Penguins enter the campaign seeking marked improvement. “We are looking to take the experience of the senior class, who has been through some ups and downs, and develop a sense of mental toughness and competitiveness,” Lemke said. “The team worked really hard in the

spring and really made some progress.” Although optimistic about the upcoming season with a multitude of returning talent, the Guins must also recoup the loss of five four-year starters - Brittny Humphrey, Alex Lee, Caitlin Lee, Keeley Rice and Carrie Wack. “We need to develop a sense of identity both offensively and defensively,” Lemke said. “I also want us to be the best conditioned team on the field. “The infusion of the young talent and scoring ability combined with the experience and toughness of the upperclassmen will definitely be beneficial for us.”

Goalkeepers The Penguins’ last line of defense for the second straight season is senior goalkeeper Mariah Snyder. Last season, Snyder set school records for most shutouts in a single season and lowest goals-against average of 1.51 in 2008. Snyder also led the team with careerbest 131 saves. Snyder, who is in just her second full season as a keeper, tallied at least 10 saves four times, including a career-high 16 against Butler. She also posted 10 saves in a 1-0 shutout against IPFW. Sophomore Nicole Klein also saw some game action, appearing in five games with two starts. Klein turned in an impressive outing collecting 12 saves in a shootout win over Valparaiso first round of the Horizon League Tournament. Klein totaled 23 saves last season.

Defenders

Mariah Snyder set the school single-season record for most shutouts with four.

The defensive backfield suffer a major blow when Caitlin Lee, Rice and Wack exhausted their eligibility after the 2008 campaign. However, the Penguins return a key cog in their back line with Horizon League AllNewcomer Team selection Kelsey Kempton. The sophomore from Strongsville, Ohio, was one of four players to start every contest

Junior forward Lauren Brennan has scored 12 goals in her first two seasons. last year and scored two goals and assisted on another. Freshman Amanda Barch and Brittney Dowd is also be relied upon to shore up the defense. Barch was a four-year letterwinner at Bishop Ready High School and earned firstteam all-conference honors, while Dowd was a standout at Beaver Local High School.

2009 PENGUINS SOCCER OCCER R 2009 SEASON OUTLOOK lead with fours each last season, while Brennan scored eight goals during her freshman campaign in 2007. Her eight goals is the second-highest single-season total in school history. Gapczynski, who has led the team in shots three straight years, tallied two goals and three assists last season. As a freshman in 2006, Gapczynski led the Penguins with five goals scored. Senior Natalie Brady is the fourth upperclassman returning up front for the Guins. Last season, Brady picked up an assist and took four shots on goal. Other returners to the frontline include junior Taylor Pickens and sophomores Kara Cooper and Hannah Snyder. Freshmen Olivia Dressler and Shelby Parks will also be counted on to infuse a scoring punch. Dressler, from Garrettsville, Ohio, set the school’s career record for most goals with 137, including a single-season mark of 45 in 2008. Parks, who hails from Russellton, Pa., also owns her prep school’s career record for most goals. She was also a four-time WPIAL AllSection pick.

Midfielders Like last season, the midfield will be the deepest position on the 2009 roster with nine players listed at that position. However, the Penguins have three big holes to fill with the loss of Alex Lee, Humphrey and Nina Pannoni to graduation. Looking to fill those voids are fifth-year senior Rochelle Boone, who started 12 games last season, senior Kate Bonn, junior Rebecca Thomas and sophomores Jessica McMurray, Kelly Storkel and Geneva Strelka. Strelka, who appeared in all 20 games, was one of the team’s top goal scorers with three last season. Three newcomers - Lydia Allen, Katie Peterlin and Cori Stark will also be asked to shore up the midfield. Allen was a two-time all-conference pick and Peterlin helped her prep squad to a state runners-up finish in 2008. Stark was named all-state as a senior and finished her career as Belle Vernon High School’s all-time leader with 124 goals and 53 assists.

2009 2 009 P PENGUINS SOCCER HEAD COACH WILL LEMKE Will Lemke became the fifth head coach in the Youngstown State soccer program’s history in January 2009. Lemke comes to YSU after a successful tenure at NAIA Viterbo University where he won more than 80 games and was the winningest coach in the school’s history. Lemke posted an 84-55-7 mark in his eight seasons with the V-Hawks. He led the program to two NAIA Regional Tournament appearances and was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 2006. Off the field, Lemke’s charges annually posted one of the top team grade-point averages at the school. He will have nine student-athletes graduate this year alone from VU. He helped turn Viterbo into a perennial conference-title contender after the program had won just 24 games in the six years prior to his arrival. At Youngstown State, Lemke will face a similar task in turning a relatively new program -- 13 years -- into a contender in the highly-competitive Horizon League. Lemke took over the V-Hawks program in 2001 after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Division II Winona State (1998-01). After posting a 3-12-1 mark his first season, Viterbo posted seven straight winning campaigns. His 12 wins in 2002 were a school best at the time. The school won MCC Championships in 2005 and 2006. The 2005 squad won a school-record 16 games and posted a .800 winning percentage. They finished 6-1-0 in the MCC that year and followed it the next season with a perfect 7-0-0 mark in 2006. The V-Hawks had the schools’ only two NAIA Regional Tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006 as well. The 2005 bid came after winning the conference’s postseason tournament. Lemke’s teams won at least 11 games in all but two of his seasons at the helm of the V-Hawks. After the squad finished fourth in the MCC for three straight campaigns, the program finished in the top three in each of his final four seasons. In 2008, the V-Hawks were 11-8-1 overall placing second in the conference at 6-2. During his time at Viterbo he served as the Athletic Department’s Event Management Coordinator. His duties included overseeing management support systems for all athletic events on campus as well as developing policies and management system procedures. Lemke was responsible for directing annual fundraising actives for soccer program that grossed more than the annual operating budget. While an assistant coach at Winona State, he worked with the head coach to help develop and maintain a Top 20 NCAA Division II program. Lemke was directly responsible for developing the goalkeepers who were voted all-conference each year. He helped with recruiting and worked as the team’s strength and conditioning coach. The Warriors won two conference championships and two tournament championships in a three-year span. Lemke served as the district select director and coach of the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Pro-

gram. He worked to create a new ODP district in Winona, Minn., and developed training programs. Lemke also served as a recruiter and trainer for 25 ODP District Select participants. Since 2004 Lemke worked as the technical director of the La Crescent Soccer Club in La Crescent, Minn. He created a training and certification program for all club coaches and year round youth training programs. He also coached a Minnesota state championship team and two runner-up teams. Lemke played basketball and soccer at the University of Wisconsin Rock County and soccer at the University of WisconsinLaCrosse. While at UW-Rock County, Lemke was a two-time allconference and all-regional performer as well as team captain. Lemke played for the LaCrosse United Premier Soccer Club from 1992-2001. In his free time Lemke is involved with Habitat for Humanity. He co-founded the UW-LaCrosse Collegiate Chapter for Habitat for Humanity and held the position of President for two years and vice president for a year. Lemke has stayed actively involved with the organization for more than 14 years. Lemke, an Edgerton, Wis., native, earned an Associate’s Degree from UW-Rock County in 1992. He furthered his education at the UW-LaCrosse where earned his bachelors in Education and History in 1996. Most recently Lemke completed his Masters of Educational Leadership from Winona State University in 2007. In soccer circles, Lemke holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, a NSCAA National Diploma and a NSCAA Level II Goalkeeping Diploma. Will and his wife, Anna, reside in Austintown.

Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Liz Vlad is in her eighth year with the program. Vlad handles strength and conditioning workouts for men’s and women’s golf, soccer, swimming, men’s and women’s tennis and track and field. She joined the YSU staff in June 2002 under then coach Todd Burkey. Vlad is now the lone full-time assistant under Coach John Patrick. Besides her role in athletics, Vlad is also a Health and Human Performance and Exercise Science instructor on campus. Vlad also serves as a fitness specialist at the Youngstown YMCA. She has been with the YMCA since 1999 serving in such capacities as a spinning instructor, a civil service and senior weight training and fitness instructor and an aquatic exercise therapist. She has a background as a nuclear medicine technologist before moving into physical fitness. Vlad earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from YSU in 2002. She is a nuclear medicine technology graduate of The Ohio State University Hospitals (1981) and graduated from the Youngstown Hospital Association’s Radiotechnology Program in 1980. Vlad holds certifications as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association; as a Health Fitness Instructor from the American College of Sports Medicine and as a Physical Fitness Specialist from the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas.

Entering his first season as a student assitant coach on the YSU soccer staff is Brian Stoddard. Stoddard has a long resume of coaching experience to bring to the Penguins. He has been coaching in the club ranks throughout the Mahoning Valley as early as 1998. He has also spent time playing and coaching for the Beadling Soccer Club in Pittsburgh, Pa., one of the country’s most decorated soccer programs. Stoddard also was the head soccer coach at Beaver Local High School in Lisbon from 2004-08, and most recently has been serving as the Keystone Soccer Academy Director of Coaching. He has also acquired his USSF “B” coaching license and NSCAA State Goalkeeper license. Stoddard is an East Liverpool, Ohio, native and is currently a senior at Youngstown State University, majoring in Physical Education.

Susan Carfolo Academic Advisor

Susan Carfolo is in her 13th year as an academic advisor in the Youngstown State athletics department. In this role, she oversees the academic progress of studentathletes in the sports of men’s and women’s golf, soccer, men’s and women’s track and field. She also oversees the YSU Student-Athlete Advisory Council (S.A.A.C) and the Champs/Life Skills program. Susan and her husband, Robert reside in Mineral Ridge with their son, Jacob.

Entering his 13th year with the Youngstown State Athletics Department is Assistant Sports Information Director Jamie Hall. Hall serves as the primary media contact for the YSU men’s basketball, softball and women’s soccer programs and is also the secondary contact for football. During his first 11 years at YSU, Hall served as the SID for the volleyball and women’s basketball programs from 1997-2008, covering two NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament teams. He assists in the maintenance of the YSU athletics website - YSUsports.com - and is a member of the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame Committee. During his time at Youngstown State, Hall has led publicity efforts for 12 academic all-district selections and two academic AllAmerica picks. Hall has also worked as the media contact for the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, swimming and diving and men’s and women’s tennis programs while at Youngstown State. Prior to joining the YSU staff in 1997, Hall spent two years as a graduate assistant at Illinois State, where he served as the media relations contact for the Illinois State baseball and women’s soccer teams. An award-winning editor at Illinois State, Hall’s 1995-96 Illinois State men’s basketball game program was voted second in the nation by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) while the 1996 Illinois State football game program finished third in the nation for Division I-AA/FCS. His 1996 Illinois State Baseball Media Guide earned Best in the District honors. A member of CoSIDA and the United States Basketball Writers Association, Hall earned his bachelor’s degree in 1994 with a double major in sports management and business administration from Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio), where he played baseball for two seasons, and a master’s degree in sports administration from Illinois State in 1996. Hall resides in Canfield and has a 12-year-old daughter, Alison.

Tom Morella is in his 16th year as a member of the Youngstown State Athletics Department and his third as Assistant Athletics Director. Morella is responsible for maintaining and cultivating Penguin Club and Football Alumni Club memberships and events. He serves as the department’s liaison for university facilities and oversees athletic youth camps, concessions and information technology, and is the sports administrator for the baseball, soccer and swimming and diving programs. Prior to his promotion, Morella spent three years as the Director of Athletic Development from 2004-07, four years as the Director of Income Operations from 2000-04 and six years as Manager of Ticket Operations from 1994-2000. His tenure at YSU began in 1993 as a marketing assistant and was responsible for group ticket and advertising sales. Morella graduated magna cum laude from YSU in 1991 with a degree in business administration and earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Kent State in 1993. He resides in New Middletown.

Jenna Lesko Assistant Athletic Trainer

Entering her 11th year with the Youngstown State athletics department is Assistant Athletic Trainer Jenna Lesko. Lesko’s sports responsibilities include working with the Penguins soccer and softball teams and is the athletic training coordinator for summer youth camps. She also certifies all athletic department coaches in American Red Cross Sport Safety Training. Certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association, Lesko is also an American Red Cross instructor and earned a bachelor’s degree in education specializing in athletic training from the University of Akron in 1993. She also earned a master’s degree in health and human services from Youngstown State in 2002. Jenna and her husband, Jay, reside in Salem with their son, Zander, and daughter, Muirin.

2009 PENGUINS SOCCER OCCER R HORIZON LEAGUE Entering its 31st season of operation in the 2009-10 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwest-

ern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

THE HORIZON LEAGUE

ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last five seasons. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters. Twenty-five student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict teams in 2008-09, while eight earned Academic All-America honors.

SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

The recent academic success of YSU’s student-athletes is unprecedented. During the 200809 academic year, 88 studentathletes earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. More than fifty percent of YSU’s studentathletes achieved at least a 3.0 GPA. Eleven of the 16 sponsored teams achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher in either the spring or fall semesters. Most notably, 424 student-athletes have earned their degree since the Athletic Academic Advising Spring 2001 semester. Jermaine Hopkins Academics Center The Jermaine Hopkins Academics Center is a state-of-the-art learning area located in Stambaugh Stadium in Room 1099 on the first floor. The Academics Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday though Friday. The Center has been completely refurbished and is one of the best learning facilities in the Horizon League and Missouri Valley Football Conference. The center features 19 private study cubicles, four study tables and 20 computer terminals. Student-athletes have access to the Internet as well as several other resources and multiple software packages on all systems within the lab. Youngstown State University is a teaching-centered university where the focus is on students and their professional development. Specializing in undergraduate education, there are more than 100 undergraduate majors, 35 master’s programs and doctoral programs in educational leadership and physical therapy. YSU is also a member of the Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), which offers an accelerated sixyear B.S./M.D. The university was recently re-accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, and individual programs are accredited by national and international accrediting bodies, including AACSB (business); ABET (engineering); and NCATE (education). With accessible faculty members, 83 percent of whom hold the highest degree attainable in their field, YSU offers a smalluniversity feel to go along with opportunities typically available only at larger institutions. The average class size is 22 in lecture classes and 10 in labs. The student to faculty ratio is 19:1.

With the help of the Jermaine Hopkins Academics Center, 90 percent or more of YSU’s student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility have graduated with a four-year degree every year since 2002.

Sports Medicine YSU student-athletes have two recently upgraded sports medicine centers at their disposal to treat and prevent injuries. The Willard Webster Sports Medicine Center inside of Stambaugh Stadium is the main hub and serves the majority of YSU’s athletic teams. There is also a training and rehabilitation room in Beeghly Center that caters to the needs of the volleyball, swimming and diving and men’s and women’s basketball squads. The centers is well equipped to handle any needs with the Veteran John Doneyko has latest available and innovative equipment worked with student-athletes for more than 20 years. for the care and prevention of injuries. John Doneyko was promoted to Head Athletic Trainer in 2008 after serving in the department for 22 years. A licensed athletic trainer in Ohio and a nationally-certified Athletic Trainer, Doneyko is assisted by Erica Chung, Jenna Lesko, Jeff Wills, Todd Burkey and Kenny Layman. Also, numerous student assistants are on hand throughout the year and work closely with all teams attending games (home and away) and practices. The Penguins staff is assisted by a host of health care professionals in the Youngstown area, providing state-of-the-art care in prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. Dr. Ray Duffett, Dr. James Shina and Dr. Mike Miladore are on hand for all home football and basketball contests and work with all sports throughout the year.

YSU has strength and conditioning as well as Athletic Training facilities in both Stambaugh Stadium and the Beeghly Center.

Strength and Conditioning The Penguin Advantage Program is designed to promote student-athlete development in physical fitness and athletic ability. This comprehensive program incorporates some of the latest and basic methods to train the university’s full complement of athletic teams. The emphasis of the Advantage Program is on total physical development to improve performance and reduce the likelihood of injury. The Stambaugh Stadium Weight Room, which continues to be one of the best facilities in the FCS and Horizon League, features 28,000 pounds of free weights, 8,000 pounds of dumbbells, 14,000 pounds of machine weights and a number of cardiovascular machines. Strength and conditioning coach John Patrick is entering his second year overseeing the program. A Youngstown native, he is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association and is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the International Sports Science Association and the United States Weightlifting Association. He is assisted by Liz Vlad along with undergraduate and graduate assistants. In addition, Dr. Mohammed Shayesteh, a licensed sports nutritionist, provides advice and counseling to athletes in conjunction with their training programs.

Stambaugh Stadium Is the home venue for Youngstown State’s soccer program and fourtime NCAA Football Championship Subdivision football team, is one of the top facilities in the entire Northeast. Nicknamed the “Ice Castle,” the stadium celebrated its 25th anniversary during the 2007 season. The tallest building in the city, Stambaugh Stadium has been defended well by the Penguins. The football team has won nearly 75 percent of its games at Stambaugh, including 14 straight playoff contests. The stadium seats 20,630 Penguins fans, and nine of the 10 all-time largest Missouri Valley Football Conference crowds have been at Stambaugh. Renovations since in recent years include a new concourse-level elevator, a new scoreboard and Mitsubishi DiamondVision videoboard and a state-of-the-art SprinTurf playing surface. Improvements have also been made to the football and administrative offices, locker rooms, athletic training room, weight room and seating areas.

Beeghly Center Serves as the home for the Youngstown State University men's and women's basketball, volleyball and swimming and diving teams. Opened in the 1972-73 school year, the arena has seen a major facelift totaling more than $4 million this decade. The last two years have been especially busy as new basketball hoops were acquired, locker rooms were refurbished, a new basketball floor and weight room were installed. Since 2000, significant improvements have been made to lobbies, hallways, locker rooms, the sound system, scoreboards and press row seating. The Beeghly Natatorium, which is in the north end of the building, has received $300,000 in improvements since 2005. Beeghly Center has also served as a venue for presidential campaign rallies, World Wide Wrestling (WWE) events, the Harlem Globetrotters and concerts.

Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) Is set to break ground within the coming year, will provide a competitive advantage to YSU’s student-athletes, particularly those participating in baseball, football, soccer, softball and track programs. The indoor facility will also serve as a university and community resource, providing a large, climate–protected venue for events and a training facility for local youth organizations and high schools.

2008-09 Athletic Highlights • The women’s outdoor track and field team and the women’s golf team each won the 2009 Horizon League Championship. • Football player Brad Samsa was named AFCA All-American. • Women’s golfer Samantha Formeck won both the Newcomer- and Player-of-the-Year Awards after earning medalist honors at the 2009 Horizon League Women’s Golf Championship. • Five student-athletes were CoSIDA Academic All-District selections. • Eighteen student-athletes were named academic all-league during the fall and winter seasons. • Quarterback Brandon Summers was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year. • YSU coaches were recognized as Coach of the Year twice. • Kiplangat Tisia finished the season as the top-ranked freshman in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional.

Competing Against the Nation’s Elite • The Youngstown State football team played at Ohio State in 2008 and 2007. It opens the 2009 season at Pittsburgh, playing the Panthers at Heinz Field for the second time in five years. YSU has also played at Penn State (2006) and returns to Beaver Stadium in 2010. • In the last three years the men’s basketball team has played at Maryland, Charlotte, UCLA, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Michigan and Ohio State while the women’s squad has played at Cincinnati, Ohio State and Pittsburgh. • Since 2005, the baseball team has scheduled games at Georgia, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Cincinnati, Penn State and West Virginia. • The softball team has played against Michigan State, Penn State, George Mason, Purdue, Michigan and Kentucky since 2006. • The track and field teams have routinely competed at the Penn Relays and Sea Ray Relays, and in 2008-09 they traveled to New York City, Virginia Tech, Florida, Louisville and Arkansas.

Playing and Working Professionally • A large number of Penguins have gone on to play professionally in the United States or overseas in recent years. • Notable past YSU student-athletes who have played professionally are Ron Jaworski (current ESPN Analyst), Jeff Wilkins (NFL Pro Bowl kicker), Paul McFadden (NFL Rookie of the Year), Dave Dravecky (MLB all-star and World Series participant) and Brad Hennessey (current San Francisco Giants pitcher) • Football players are frequently invited to tryouts for NFL teams. Running back Marcus Mason made the Washington Redskins’ roster in 2006, and wide receiver Kyle Smith was in camp with the Minnesota Vikings in 2005. Other recent football players have played overseas or gone on to play in the Arena Football League. • Quin Humphrey played professional basketball in Europe and the NBDL after a successful playing career that ended in 2006. • YSU student-athletes have also gone on to work in athletic administration and in the front office of professional sports teams. • Outside of athletics, YSU student-athletes have been admitted to top-level medical and graduate schools, become police officers, engineers, teachers, coaches, financial planners, broadcasters, university developers, hotel executives and much more.

How they started, what traditions they maintain, the way they look, the students they serve, the things they offer academically and socially, the role they play in their communities, and the role they play in the generation of new knowledge. Youngstown State University’s story is all those things. YSU is about outstanding academic quality, diversity of people and programs, and broad access to opportunity. Campus Overview • Opened in 1908, YSU celebrated its centennial during the 200708 academic year. As part of the celebration, the university launched a $44 million campaign for campus improvements. In addition to endowments for students and colleges, the centennial plan calls for a new $34.3 million business building, improved engineering and science labs and an indoor athletics practice facility. • With enrollment at its highest in the last 13 years, the student population is 13,497, more than 12,000 of which are undergraduate students. Based on demographics, 44 percent are male, 56 percent are female; 17 percent are minority students and 1 percent are international students. 218 current YSU students were high school valedictorians, and there are more than 85,000 alumni. • YSU’s 145-acre urban campus is one of the nation’s most attractive and among Ohio’s safest. • The new $30-million Williamson College of Business Administration building broke ground in the spring of 2009.

Campus Housing • Four university residence halls house 1,000 students in comfortable, spacious rooms. • The $22 million University Courtyard Apartments, operated by the Ambling Corporation exclusively for YSU students, is one of the finest facilities of its kind in Ohio. Opened in 2003, Courtyard Apartments offer singles, doubles, and quads for 408 students. • Buechner Hall, a privately-run residence, accommodates 72 women on campus and includes a meal plan, weekly room-cleaning services and a stately European ambience. • All university-operated residence halls, as well as University Courtyard Apartments, have in-room high-speed Internet connections, cable and telephone terminals.

Library Resources • Six-story Maag Library on campus features 700,000 bound volumes, 300,000 government documents and 800,000 microforms. • A member of OhioLink research consortium, which provides access to over 39 million items. • The Youngstown Public Library is located across the street from the South end of campus.

The University Courtyard Apartments on the West end of campus houses many student-athletes.

Campus Recreation and Student Programming is the central hub for student life on campus. There are more than 40 intramural sports programs, fitness classes and workshops that are taught by certified student staff. The department organizes the Penguin Pre-Party every other Thursday, which features live entertainment on campus. The department also oversees Greek life and more than 120 student organizations ranging from the American Marketing Association to Fellowship of Christian Athletes to the Ski and Snowboarding Club. The 70,000 square foot Andrews Recreation and Wellness Center opened in 2005 and features the latest in recreation, fitness and wellness space. In the “rec” are more than 70 pieces of cardio equipment, 24 weight-training pieces and a combination of 40 plate-loaded and freeweight stations. There are four multi-purpose courts to play basketball, volleyball, badminton and many other activities; an aerobics studio; a meditation center and a five-story climbing wall. There is also a wellness resource center that offers comprehensive programming in areas of fitness, nutrition, mental and spiritual health and personal safety. Penguin Productions, a group of motivated students and advisers from campus, has helped bring popular musical artists such as Ludacris, Korn, Sugarland, Puddle of Mudd and Saliva to the area. The Kilcawley Student Center features amenities for student entertainment and academic wellness. The KC Food Court, Arby’s, candy counter, Peaberry’s Cafe and lounge areas are ideal places to mingle with friends. Kilcawley also has full copy and graphic centers, wireless hotspots, computer labs and ample meeting space. The YSU Bookstore and Andrews Recreation and Wellness Center are connected. The College of Fine & Performing Arts Series features talented YSU students in events ranging from art shows to plays to dance ensembles. The Dana School of Music is nationally renowned, and its students are showcased in weekly concerts at the Butler Institute of American Art and major performances both on and just off campus. The YSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2005.

Off-campus venues within walking distance also provide students with a wide variety of entertainment choices. The DeYor Performing Arts Center houses the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and popular performances such as Beauty and the Beast, Rent and High School Musical. Jerry Seinfeld and other comedians have performed at Stambaugh Auditorium. The Covelli Centre has been the venue for events ranging from boxing to 3 Doors Down and Carrie Underwood concerts to Disney on Ice to USHL hockey and arena football.

The Youngstown State student section at Stambaugh Stadium is a popular spot during Penguins’ football games. The Andrews Recreation and Wellness Center is a popular spot for students.

When

David C. Sweet became Youngstown State University’s sixth president in July 2000, he mapped out a course that included three priorities: enrollment, partnerships, and diversity. Now in his tenth year, the University has made great strides in all three areas. Enrollment has jumped more than 16 percent since fall 2000 and is now at its highest level in 14 years. Over the last nine years, the number of minority students has increased more than 60 percent. And the University has initiated partnerships with the city of Youngstown, the Youngstown city school district, business, government, and non-profit organizations throughout the region. The University has also expanded academic programs at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels, including a new doctor of physical therapy degree. YSU reorganized its academic structure to better address the growing importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the state and national levels. As a result, two new colleges were created: the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In partnership with the Youngstown city schools, the University opened Youngstown Early College, a high school on the YSU campus aimed at helping city school students earn college credit and a high school degree at the same time. YSU has worked in collaboration with the city of Youngstown to complete a nationally-recognized urban development plan, Youngstown 2010, in conjunction with the Centennial Campus Master Plan. In addition, the University has been a leader in the development of Wick Neighbors, a non-profit community organization that is spearheading a major redevelopment project on the 70 acres of land that comprises the Smoky Hollow neighborhood. Since 2000, the University has opened the $22 million University Courtyard Apartments and the $12.1 million Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The campus has recently completed the YSU Centennial Capital Campaign that has raised more than $50 million, exceeding the original goal by 14 percent. It is the largest fund-raising effort in YSU’s history. A centerpiece of the campaign is the construction of the new $34.3 million building for the Williamson College of Business Administration, which is now underway. In partnership with federal, state and local agencies, major improvements have been made to corridors leading to the campus. Prior to coming to YSU, Dr. Sweet was dean and professor of the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State from 1978 to 2000. His leadership resulted in national recognition for the college’s graduate studies and its city’s management/urban policy program. Prior to joining Cleveland State, Dr. Sweet held a number of state cabinet posts, including the director of the State Department of Development. He also served as commissioner of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission and head of the state’s first energy agency. Prior to state service, he was director of regional economic research at the Battelle Institute in Columbus.

He previously served as the chairman of the Northeast-Midwest Institute, a Washington, D.C. policy research institute, president of the American Economic Development Council; and has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. Dr. Sweet holds a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, an M.A.from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and a B.A. from the University of Rochester. He and his wife, Pat, live in Liberty, Ohio, and have two daughters, two sons and seven grandchildren. After a decade of success and service, Dr. Sweet will retire from the presidency on June 30, 2010, and the Board of Trustees is undertaking a search for his replacement.

xecutive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo, a former Penguin student-athlete, has worked diligently to ensure that today’s student-athletes have the support system in place to succeed not only at Youngstown State, but also in their future. Now in his ninth year as Athletics Director and 14th as a member of the department, his vision for successful broad-based programs and providing student-athletes tools to succeed on and off the playing fields is coming to fruition. Strollo has concentrated his priorities on facility improvements; full compliance of NCAA regulations; fiscal management and budgetary maintenance; streamlining department organization; increasing visibility and fundraising efforts of the Penguin Club; and enhancing the overall experience and competitiveness of studentathletes and programs. Outside of YSU, Strollo is also very involved on the regional and national level serving on several prominent committees. He is in his first of four years on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Selection Committee; is on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee; serves as the Central Region Chair of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee; is on the Executive Committee of the FCS Athletic Directors Association; and serves as the Chair of the Horizon League Executive Committee. During his tenure, Strollo has placed a priority on the construction and enhancements of athletic venues. Currently, he is leading the final phases of a capital campaign to construct the Watson and Tressel Training Site, a $10 million indoor athletic practice facility which will include an indoor track and football practice field. The Beeghly Center has undergone more than $4 million in renovations. In the past year, Youngstown State acquired the 2009 Men’s Final Four basketball hoops, new strobe lighting was installed and the volleyball and men’s basketball locker rooms were refurbished. Last year, a new Dom Rosselli Court was installed and a weight room was built for the men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and swimming and diving programs. Within the past two years in Stambaugh Stadium, office space in the athletic marketing and ticket offices and football suite received an enhancement, the weight room and athletic training offices were renovated, and upgrades were made to the baseball, soccer and softball locker rooms. Other recent upgrades include new chair-back seating (2009), a new southstadium scoreboard (2009), a concourse-level elevator (2005), a scoreboard and a Mitsubishi DiamondVision videoboard (2004) and a state-of-the-art SprinTurf playing surface (2002). He has also secured agreements for Eastwood Field, the home of the Cleveland Indians’ Class-A affiliate, and Cene Park to be the baseball team’s home fields and McCune Park to serve as the softball team’s home venue. Thanks to the benevolence of the Andrews Trust and the priority Strollo places on academics, the academic counseling center underwent a significant renovation and expansion and continues to receive technology upgrades. In the past eight years, the department, which has been recognized as a national leader for its graduation rates, has had many successes on and off the playing field. Under his leadership, Youngstown State earned full NCAA certification in 2007. operates in substantial conformity with the operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership. More than half of the current 300-plus student-athletes have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher while nine teams have an overall GPA of at least 3.0. YSU’s Academic Progress Rate is well above the national average for public institutions, and its 93 percent graduation rate is at an all-time high. Eleven student-athletes have captured Academic All-America accolades while a total of 46 have been named to Academic All-District teams. YSU has won 13 Horizon League titles, and it won back-to-back Gateway Football Conference (now the Missouri Valley Football Conference) championships in 2005 and 2006. Most recently, YSU added the 2009 Horizon League Women’s Outdoor Track and Field and Women’s Golf Championships to its trophy cases. In Strollo’s role as the Executive Director of the Penguin Club, the organization has increased athletic endowed scholarship contributions annually. Annual events keep improving every year, and the growth of the Football Alumni Club has had a positive impact on the department. Strollo returned to his alma mater in 1996 as athletic business manager. In March 2000, he was named the school’s Associate Executive Director of Athletics. In his short time in that capacity, he helped spearhead the transition into the Horizon League. He has strong ties to the local community and to the athletic department. He grew up in nearby Austintown and attended Fitch High School. He played football for YSU from 1988 through 1991 for Coach Jim Tressel and was named captain of the first Division I-AA National Championship team in 1991. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Youngstown State in June, 1993. Ron and his wife, Nicole, reside in Austintown with their two children, Ryan and Rachel. Nicole is a former YSU student-athlete who competed in track and cross country from 1989 through 1993.

Penguin Nickname Legend Prior to 1933, Youngstown College had been referred to as "Y" College, YoCo, Wye Collegians and many times, simply the "Locals." There are two accounts of how the Penguin nickname came to be, and interestingly enough they come from the same evening on Jan. 30, 1933. But throughout the season prior to that contest, many of the members of the 1932-33 varsity men’s basketball team and their friends on campus spent idle moments in the cafeteria discussing suitable new names for our school sports combines, basketball, and fencing that year. The names considered covered every conceivable spectrum of animals, birds, and things associated with the steel city, but none seemed to fit. There was always someone who pointed out an inadequacy of some sort. The first account states that on a cold, freezing night at a men’s basketball game at West Liberty State Teachers College, in West Liberty, W. Va., a spectator watching the members of the team stomp on the floor and swing their arms made them look like Penguins and without a nickname, the fans took a liking to the word. The City of Youngstown was incorporated in 1867 and named for John Young, who purchased approximately 15,000 acres (the entire township) for slightly more than $16,000 in 1797 from the United States Government. Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel is formerly the head coach at YSU, and current college head coaches Bo Pelini (Nebraska), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Mike Stoops (Arizona) and Mark Mangino (Kansas) are all from the Valley.

Five boxing champions have their roots in Youngstown. The most recent champion, middleweight Kelly Pavlik, wore the Youngstown State “Y” and Pete the Penguin on his trunks when he beat Jermaine Taylor on HBO in 2008.

Built in 2005, the 5,700-seat Covelli Centre is a large part of the downtown revitalization project. It houses minor league hockey and arena football, concerts, ice shows and much more.

The amount of local media coverage dedicated to Youngstown State athletics ranks near the top in both the Horizon League and the Missouri Valley Football Conference. As the main sports attraction in the Mahoning Valley, the Penguins receive daily coverage from five television stations, two major newspapers and several radio stations. Regional media coverage extends to Akron, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Missouri Valley Football Conference contests are frequently featured as nationally televised games of the week, and the Horizon League has a partnership with ESPN and its stations to broadcast men’s and women’s basketball games. Football and basketball games are broadcast locally on tape-delay.

Live Internet Coverage In addition to coverage provided by traditional media, the successes of Youngstown State studentathletes are regularly broadcast live across the world over the Internet. The Horizon League is a recognized leader in video streaming through the Horizon League Network (HLN) and produced more than 300 free, live events during the 2008-09 academic year. In addition to live games, HLN includes highlight vignettes of all-19 League championships, weekly highlight videos during the men’s and women’s basketball season and other special programming covering Horizon League institutions, coaches and student-athletes. Nearly every one of YSU’s home men’s and women’s basketball games and all league road contests are broadcast over the HLN. Penguin Gameday, a production of the local NBC affiliate, showcases upcoming opponents, reviews past contests and provides an avenue for fans to become familiar with studentathletes. Penguin Playbook is an hour-long radio show broadcast on the high-power AM station 570 WKBN.

YSU received front-page coverage of its Horizon League track title in the Youngstown Vindicator.

Local exposure is also extended to Olympic sports.
