The new Dom Rosselli court highlights an extensive list of recent renovations inside the arena. The Beeghly Physical Education Center serves as the home for the Youngstown State University volleyball program as well as the men's and women's basketball teams. Beeghly Center is located on the northwest end of YSU's scenic downtown campus and comprises part of the Penguins' on-campus athletic venues. Opened in the 1972-73 school year, the arena has received significant upgrades this decade. Most recently, a new Connor PermaFlex floor in the main gym was installed prior to the 2008 season. Earlier in the academic year, a new weight room was opened on the third level to accommodate YSU’s athletic programs housed in Beeghly Center. In May 2002, the facility underwent more than $2.5 million in renovations that included a new front and rear lobby and new hallways and locker rooms. Also a new $150,000 sound system, two additional

scoreboards and expanded press-row seating were added. The multipurpose facility also includes an Olympic-sized swimming and diving pool, racquetball and squash courts, classrooms and administrative offices. Beeghly Center was dedicated on Dec. 23, 1972, when the Penguins, under Hall of Fame coach Dom Rosselli, played host to Ohio University. The original seating capacity of 6,000 was altered prior to the 1983-84 college basketball season by adding permanent seats at both ends of the court and 1,260 chairback seats at mid-court. The facility has a current capacity of 6,300 for basketball seating. Since 2004 the Beeghly Center has hosted the Horizon League Volleyball Championship, an in-season tournament and top-25 teams Ohio State and Dayton.

2009 Penguins Volleyball The senior-led Youngstown State volleyball team has the tools and potential to put together its best season since joining the Horizon League. However, replacing three-year starters at setter and outside hitter will determine how quickly the team can mesh in a challenging new format to league play. The Penguins jumped out to a 7-3 start last season for their fourth-best start in school history, but they hit a slide and finished 1117 overall and 4-12 in Horizon League play. They’ll need a better finish in 2009 just to make the Horizon League Tournament as the League has trimmed the field from nine teams to six to make the regular season more competitive. The skid and new format has done nothing but motivate the team - particularly the group of seniors - to make sure 2009 is a season of success. YSU returns 11 of its 13 letterwinners and five starters – including the libero – to the 2009 squad. At the forefront of the returning group are four seniors, three of which can all dominate a match at the net. “(The seniors) know how to win, they want to win and they’ve worked their butts off to continue to change the perception of this program,” head coach Joe Bonner said. “The perception here continues to get better both on and off the court, and that shows a lot of character.” “They’re pretty aggressive with their personality when they want to get something done. They all have the same objective to walk out of here knowing that this program has gotten a lot better.”

` Middle Hitter With a solid senior season, middle hitter Ruth Boscaljon will have the chance to be mentioned among the greatest Penguins volleyball players of all time. Boscaljon already ranks 10th in school history in career kills (992) and fi ft h in blocks (364). Her 1.16 blocks per set led the Horizon League and ranked 48th nationally, and her .297 hitting percentage was second in the circuit. She will almost certainly move into the top three in school history in kills – she needs just 141 – and her current .294 career attack percentage is the best ever by a Penguin. “Offensively, Ruth has always hit right around .300 every year,” Bonner said, “but I don’t know if likes more between a kill and a block. She understands what she needs to do to finish stronger, and that goes with the time she put in this summer. She has very high goals for herself and for the team this year.” Fellow senior middle hitter Allison Heinz finished third on the team with a .240 attack percentage in her 41 sets last season. Although she’ll have to battle for major playing time in the middle, Heinz has 431 kills and 200 total blocks to her credit in three seasons. Haley Kapferer emerged as a force in

Season Outlook

the middle last season, ranking ninth in the Horizon League in hitting percentage (.268) and 10th in blocks per set (0.86). She posted 13 kills twice, and she had at least five blocks seven times. “The three (returners) really get after each other in practice and help each other out,” Bonner said. “They don’t back down from each other, and that’s fun to see. As far as stats, go, this group is definitely putting up great numbers as a trio of middle hitters.” Incoming freshman Martina Davis (Penn Hills, Pa.) will join Kapferer, Heinz and Boscaljon in the middle.

` Outside Hitter Senior Kaitlin O’Hara is coming off the best season of her career in 2008 and enters 2009 as the leader of a deep group on the outside. O’Hara finished last season with a careerhigh 225 kills in her first year of full-time duty on the outside. She led the Penguins in kills seven times, and she registered double digits in kills in four of her final five matches. Redshirt sophomore Kelsi Bitter, sophomore Brittany Grove and true freshman Suzanne Lasseigne will look to step in for three-year starter Ebony Barbosa, who played almost every point last season as the team’s MVP. Although the group is talented, it has a combined total of five collegiate kills. Bitter missed the final 21 matches last season with an injury, and Grove played in eight matches as a reserve. Bonner raved about Grove’s improvement in the spring, and the sophomore was a Division I second-team All-Ohio selection in high school. Lasseigne was named a High School All-American by PrepVolleyball.com at Princess Anne High in Virginia Beach, Va. “Kaitlin was one of the best outsides that I’ve seen in my coaching career during those last five matches last season,” Bonner said. “Kelsi really wants to go out and prove herself now that she’s healthy, and Brittany had a wonderful spring. Suzanne doesn’t possess the most athletic talent, but she is just a baller.” Redshirt sophomore Tasha Reid returns from a solid freshman campaign in which she posted 154 kills and 63 blocks on the right side. The southpaw played in all but three sets during the year, and she had at least eight kills in nine matches. “Tasha has really matured a lot after she played in a lot of matches last year,” Bonner said. “She got a lot of experience and understands what it will take to become the great player that she will be.”

` Setter The Penguins will have either a redshirt sophomore or true freshman start at setter after the departure of three-year starter Karla Everhart.

Freshman Angela Roidt (left) and redshirt sophomore Dani Soubliere will work to replace a three-year starter at setter.

Redshirt sophomore Dani Soubliere returns from a knee injury as the most-experienced setter on the squad. She played in 22 matches as a freshman in a reserve role, registering 128 assists and 32 digs. Soubliere will battle freshman Angela Roidt, who was recognized as one of the top 250 seniors in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com.

` Defensive Specialist Junior Laurie Shives and a talented group of four underclassmen will anchor the back row. Shives has 685 digs through two seasons, including 437 at libero as a freshman, and she had a strong spring. She also ranked second on the team last season with 28 aces, and her .954 serve percentage was also second. Gray played in all but two matches last season and ranked second among Horizon League freshmen with 245 digs. McNeal played in 21 matches and finished with 78 digs. Brittany Holland, a Third-Team All-Ohio selection at Division I as a senior at Vandalia Butler High, should also see time in the back. YSU’s fourth senior, Dana Leslie, will likely have to contribute vocally from the sideline this season after suffering a severe knee injury during the spring. She played in 90 sets last season and has 490 digs in her career. “We have a talented and energetic group in the back,” Bonner said. “Laurie is very smooth and was phenomenal in the spring. Amanda brings a lot of energy and intensity, and Brittany McNeal just needs to continue to mature and gain confidence. Brittany Holland is a tough, hard-nosed kid, and I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t want that kind of player. I’m going to be excited about whoever is back there playing defense.”

Coaching Staff

Joe Bonner Head Coach Fifth Year Frostburg State, 1997 Now in his fift h season at the helm of the Youngstown State volleyball program, head coach Joe Bonner is beginning to see his vision of turning the Penguins into a Horizon League contender become a reality. He’s completely reshaped the program by recruiting top-level players, scheduling nationally-ranked teams and establishing the same mentality that got him to five NCAA Tournaments as an assistant. Bonner’s success in recruiting continued in the recent offseason when he brought in two highly-regarded student-athletes. Setter Angela Roidt was recognized as one of the top 250 seniors in the nation, and outside hitter Suzanne Lasseigne earned High School All-America honors. Bonner also attracted athletic middle hitter Martina Davis and third-team All-Ohio defensive specialist Brittany Holland. The Penguins got off to a strong start in 2008 under Bonner and assembled a long list of accomplishments. YSU won seven of its first 10 matches for the second time in Bonner’s tenure and won tournaments at Charlotte and Robert Morris. YSU also picked up its first-ever threeset sweep in a Horizon League match last season, accomplishing the feat against Loyola and at Green Bay. The Penguins also won at Loyola, marking the first time that the program won two Horizon League road matches in the same season. On the individual level, Bonner saw the career culmination of Karla Everhart and Ebony Barbosa, who were part of his first recruiting class. Everhart wrapped up

6

2009 Penguins Volleyball her career with 3,339 assists, and Barbosa finished with 985 kills and 1,061 digs. Additionally, 2009 senior Ruth Boscaljon led the Horizon League in blocks per set and ranked second in attack percentage. Her efforts at the net helped YSU rank 30th nationally in blocks. In each of Bonner’s first three seasons, the team showed a marked improvement in the win column and its competitiveness on the court. During the 2007 campaign, Bonner guided the Penguins to their highest win total (12) since they won 14 matches in the Mid-Continent Conference in 2000. The Guins finished seventh in the Horizon League - a school best since joining the conference in 2001 - and won more league matches than the previous six seasons combined. YSU defeated league runner-up Valparaiso twice, and five of its conference losses came in five sets. For the second straight season, a YSU player was named to the AllHorizon League Team when Jessica Fraley earned the postseason honor. Fraley also earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors and Academic All-League laurels. Behind her 427 kills, she was named YSU’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Bonner’s 2006 recruiting class earned a top 100 ranking by prepvolleyball.com. Boscaljon, one of those recruits that helped kickstart the progression, became the first Youngstown State volleyball player to earn All-Horizon League honors and just the second player in school history to garner a newcomer-of-the-year award. Utilizing three freshmen and two limited-experienced sophomores for much of the 2006 season, the Penguins turned in a three-match improvement in the win column from Bonner’s first year. During his initial campaign, Bonner guided the Penguins through an injuryplagued 7-22 season, but he instilled a strong competitive desire. Included in the Penguins’ losses were five five-set

setbacks, all to Horizon League foes. Abby Ettenhofer, Katie Shea and Crystal Duncan each capped their playing days with careerbest numbers. Off the court, Ettenhofer, the president of YSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was named SecondTeam Academic All-America, becoming just the second YSU volleyball player to accomplish that feat. Bonner came to YSU after spending two seasons as the top assistant coach at the University of Dayton. He helped the Flyers to a two-year mark of 49-16 and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. While at Dayton, Bonner worked primarily with the middle hitters and blockers. In addition to his on-court duties, he was responsible for team travel, game operations and assisting with recruiting.

Prior to Dayton, Bonner spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Robert Morris, helping the Colonials to three consecutive Northeast Conference titles and three straight NCAA Tournaments. Under his guidance, four middle hitters received all-conference honors and one earned NEC Player-of-the-Year accolades for two consecutive years. Outside of the college realm, Bonner also has four years of collegiate club volleyball coaching experience. A 1997 graduate of Frostburg State University, Bonner’s club team made two national tournament appearances, as well as three years of USAV competition. A native of Huntingtown, Md., Bonner received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Frostburg State. Joe and his wife, Kelly, who was a fouryear volleyball letterwinner at Mars Hills College, reside in Austintown, Ohio.

2009 Penguins Volleyball Defensive-minded Darcy Thompson is in her second season as an assistant coach at Youngstown State. Thompson, a two-time allconference pick as a studentathlete, helped a young group of back-row players mature into a promising unit for the future. Under Thompson’s guidance, Amanda Gray ranked second among Horizon League freshmen with 245 digs and 2.72 digs per set. Laurie Shives registered 248 digs as a sophomore, and she showed enormous progression throughout the spring season. Assistant Coach Thompson came to YSU Second Year with experience coaching at Robert Morris, 2005 Villanova, Dayton and Robert Morris. In 2007, Thompson helped guide Villanova to a 17-12 overall record and a 9-5 mark in the Big East. She also coached Villanova’s first AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Alona Cherkez. With Thompson as a volunteer assistant at Dayton in 2006, the Flyers posted a 22-11 record for the season and advanced to the championship match of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. In addition, Faye Barhorst earned honorable mention All-America

Darcy Thompson

Josh Hall

Josh Hall is in his second season as an assistant coach at Youngstown State. Hall, who earned his degree in exercise science from YSU in May 2009, assists with fi lm editing, tape exchange, and day-to-day operations with the volleyball program. He also played a large role in the 2009 summer camp series, which featured more than 550 young volleyball players from four states. A 2003 graduate of nearby Liberty High, Hall has already

Coaching Staff

honors from the AVCA, and Amanda Robbe was cited for her academic success on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Prior to joining the Dayton staff, Thompson was a standout player at Robert Morris University before spending the 2005 season as an assistant coach at RMU. The Colonials went 16-13 in 2005 and reached the Northeast Conference championship match. During her playing career at Robert Morris, Thompson was a twotime All-Northeast Conference first team selection, and she owns the top two Robert Morris single-season digs records with 718 (2004) and 576 (2003). In the summer after her graduation, she was chosen to play on the Bringit Promotion USA Select volleyball team. Thompson was ranked nationally in digs per game during her junior and senior seasons and rates second in school history with 1,583 digs. Thompson graduated from Robert Morris with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in the spring of 2005 and a master’s degree in communications information systems in the winter of 2005.

Assistant Coach Second Year Youngstown State, 2009

assembled an impressive coaching resume. He has coached for the Trumbull Volleyball Club for four years, and twice his teams have finished second at the Asics East Coast Championships. Hall has also served as a volleyball coach at his alma mater and Lakeview High. He is a certified USA Volleyball regional referee, and he has previously worked as an official scorer at YSU matches.

Ruth’s Senior Send-Off My experiences here at Youngstown State have been life changing. I have had experiences that I’ll never forget and some that should never be repeated. YSU has allowed me to develop into a stronger athlete, but, more importantly, a stronger person. This is all because of the YSU family and my teammates, without whom I would have not been able to survive. I have been blessed to have come in with amazing girls who have supported me throughout and who I am proud to play my final days with. These past four years have flown by, and, at times, felt like they never really happened. But there are those early morning practices and late night talks that remind me of the blood, sweat and tears that this team has pushed through to play at our best. When all is said and done, I could not have asked for a better group of girls to call my teammates and friends. While my volleyball career is coming to a close, the relationships I have developed here at YSU will last forever. Thank you to the Youngstown faulty and staff for all their support throughout these years. Also, all the credit goes to God and my family, who are my rock and without whom I would be nothing. It is hard to think the end is coming and I will soon turn in my number 20 jersey for the last time, but what I have learned here at Youngstown State go far beyond the walls of this gym. I am proud to forever say that Y-Town is My Town!

Allison’s Senior Send-Off My experience at Youngstown State University has been a real adventure. I have had the privilege to be a part of a great volleyball program that has taught me a lot in many different ways. Being a part of a team taught me to trust others and how to be more personable. I have learned the importance of scheduling and organizing my time wisely. Also, it has helped me become more aware about healthy choices, nutrition, and exercising. The most important things that I took from my experience are playing competitively, gaining best friends, and having the love for the game. I would not be who I am today if it were not for my coaches and my teammates, thank you. I would also like to thank all of the staff and faculty that have helped the volleyball program and that have given me this life changing opportunity. Go Penguins!

Dana’s Senior Send-Off My experience thus far at Youngstown State could be summed up in one word, and that word is blessed. I have been blessed with an amazing experience that I would never take back, nor repeat, because it was perfect the way it happened. I was blessed to go on this journey with a group of girls that even the word amazing doesn’t do justice in describing. They have been my backbone for the past three years, thy taught me to never let a good opportunity pass you by, and I am so grateful because those opportunities turned into amazing memories that I will never forget. I was also blessed in being able to be a part of many organizations such as SAAC and Penguin Productions and have a great job at MVR that not only got me more involved with the university, but also the city of Youngstown. Everything about my college experience has truly been a gift, and I am more than grateful for it. I am going to miss the sport of volleyball, but more than that I’m going to miss the moments, the moments that made it all worth it, and all the moments that remind me how truly blessed I am to have been a YSU Penguin.

Horizon League: Raise Your Sights Aspiring to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility

E

ntering its 31st season of operation in the 2009-10 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball).

The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

` A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the studentathletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

The Beeghly Center weight room opened in 2008.

Stambaugh Stadium Is the home venue for Youngstown State’s soccer program and fourtime NCAA Football Championship Subdivision football team, is one of the top facilities in the entire Northeast. Nicknamed the “Ice Castle,” the stadium celebrated its 25th anniversary during the 2007 season. The tallest building in the city, Stambaugh Stadium has been defended well by the Penguins. The football team has won nearly 75 percent of its games at Stambaugh, including 14 straight playoff contests. The stadium seats 20,630 Penguins fans, and nine of the 10 all-time largest Missouri Valley Football Conference crowds have been at Stambaugh. Renovations since in recent years include a new concourse-level elevator, a new scoreboard and Mitsubishi DiamondVision videoboard and a state-of-the-art SprinTurf playing surface. Improvements have also been made to the football and administrative offices, locker rooms, athletic training room, weight room and seating areas.

Beeghly Center Serves as the home for the Youngstown State University men's and women's basketball, volleyball and swimming and diving teams. Opened in the 1972-73 school year, the arena has seen a major facelift totaling more than $4 million this decade. The last two years have been especially busy as new basketball hoops were acquired, locker rooms were refurbished, a new basketball floor and weight room were installed. Since 2000, significant improvements have been made to lobbies, hallways, locker rooms, the sound system, scoreboards and press row seating. The Beeghly Natatorium, which is in the north end of the building, has received $300,000 in improvements since 2005. Beeghly Center has also served as a venue for presidential campaign rallies, World Wide Wrestling (WWE) events, the Harlem Globetrotters and concerts.

Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) Is set to break ground within the coming year, will provide a competitive advantage to YSU’s student-athletes, particularly those participating in baseball, football, soccer, softball and track programs. The indoor facility will also serve as a university and community resource, providing a large, climate–protected venue for events and a training facility for local youth organizations and high schools.

Your Success is Our Story You have a story. Everyone does. It’s about where you come from, what you think about, what you value. It’s about your friends, your family, your language, your music, your school. It’s about your particular skills and interests, what you’ve learned so far in life, how you relate to the world and other people. Right now, you’re about to start a whole new chapter in your story. In the book called My Life—by you, of course—the theme of this chapter is “Where do I want to go, and who do I want to become?” You have options you want to explore, places you want to see, things you want to do, ideas you want to propose, a career you want to pursue. That’s one reason you’re planning to go to college—to get going on that next chapter of your life, to become who you want to be. Colleges and universities have stories, too. How they started, what traditions they maintain, the way they look, the students they serve, the things they offer academically and socially, the role they play in their communities, and the role they play in the generation of new knowledge. Youngstown State University’s story is all those things. YSU is about outstanding academic quality, diversity of people and programs, and broad access to opportunity. But it is, overall, a culmination of the stories of all the students who in the past 100 years graduated and went on to make a difference. Our students - while they are here and after they graduate - are what YSU is all about.

When

David C. Sweet became Youngstown State University’s sixth president in July 2000, he mapped out a course that included three priorities: enrollment, partnerships, and diversity. Now in his tenth year, the University has made great strides in all three areas. Enrollment has jumped more than 16 percent since fall 2000 and is now at its highest level in 14 years. Over the last nine years, the number of minority students has increased more than 60 percent. And the University has initiated partnerships with the city of Youngstown, the Youngstown city school district, business, government, and non-profit organizations throughout the region. The University has also expanded academic programs at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels, including a new doctor of physical therapy degree. YSU reorganized its academic structure to better address the growing importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the state and national levels. As a result, two new colleges were created: the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In partnership with the Youngstown city schools, the University opened Youngstown Early College, a high school on the YSU campus aimed at helping city school students earn college credit and a high school degree at the same time. YSU has worked in collaboration with the city of Youngstown to complete a nationally-recognized urban development plan, Youngstown 2010, in conjunction with the Centennial Campus Master Plan. In addition, the University has been a leader in the development of Wick Neighbors, a non-profit community organization that is spearheading a major redevelopment project on the 70 acres of land that comprises the Smoky Hollow neighborhood. Since 2000, the University has opened the $22 million University Courtyard Apartments and the $12.1 million Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The campus has recently completed the YSU Centennial Capital Campaign that has raised more than $50 million, exceeding the original goal by 14 percent. It is the largest fund-raising effort in YSU’s history. A centerpiece of the campaign is the construction of the new $34.3 million building for the Williamson College of Business Administration, which is now underway. In partnership with federal, state and local agencies, major improvements have been made to corridors leading to the campus. Prior to coming to YSU, Dr. Sweet was dean and professor of the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State from 1978 to 2000. His leadership resulted in national recognition for the college’s graduate studies and its city’s management/urban policy program. Prior to joining Cleveland State, Dr. Sweet held a number of state cabinet posts, including the director of the State Department of Development. He also served as commissioner of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission and head of the state’s first energy agency. Prior to state service, he was director of regional economic research at the Battelle Institute in Columbus.

He previously served as the chairman of the Northeast-Midwest Institute, a Washington, D.C. policy research institute, president of the American Economic Development Council; and has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. Dr. Sweet holds a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, an M.A. from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and a B.A. from the University of Rochester. He and his wife, Pat, live in Liberty, Ohio, and have two daughters, two sons and seven grandchildren. After a decade of success and service, Dr. Sweet will retire from the presidency on June 30, 2010, and the Board of Trustees is undertaking a search for his replacement.

xecutive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo, a former Penguin student-athlete, has worked diligently to ensure that today’s student-athletes have the support system in place to succeed not only at Youngstown State, but also in their future. Now in his ninth year as Athletics Director and 14th as a member of the department, his vision for successful broad-based programs and providing student-athletes tools to succeed on and off the playing fields is coming to fruition. Strollo has concentrated his priorities on facility improvements; full compliance of NCAA regulations; fiscal management and budgetary maintenance; streamlining department organization; increasing visibility and fundraising efforts of the Penguin Club; and enhancing the overall experience and competitiveness of studentathletes and programs. Outside of YSU, Strollo is also very involved on the regional and national level serving on several prominent committees. He is in his first of four years on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Selection Committee; is on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee; serves as the Central Region Chair of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee; is on the Executive Committee of the FCS Athletic Directors Association; and serves as the Chair of the Horizon League Executive Committee. During his tenure, Strollo has placed a priority on the construction and enhancements of athletic venues. Currently, he is leading the final phases of a capital campaign to construct the Watson and Tressel Training Site, a $10 million indoor athletic practice facility which will include an indoor track and football practice field. The Beeghly Center has undergone more than $4 million in renovations. In the past year, Youngstown State acquired the 2009 Men’s Final Four basketball hoops, new strobe lighting was installed and the volleyball and men’s basketball locker rooms were refurbished. Last year, a new Dom Rosselli Court was installed and a weight room was built for the men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and swimming and diving programs. Within the past two years in Stambaugh Stadium, office space in the athletic marketing and ticket offices and football suite received an enhancement, the weight room and athletic training offices were renovated, and upgrades were made to the baseball, soccer and softball locker rooms. Other recent upgrades include new chair-back seating (2009), a new southstadium scoreboard (2009), a concourse-level elevator (2005), a scoreboard and a Mitsubishi DiamondVision videoboard (2004) and a state-of-the-art SprinTurf playing surface (2002). He has also secured agreements for Eastwood Field, the home of the Cleveland Indians’ Class-A affiliate, and Cene Park to be the baseball team’s home fields and McCune Park to serve as the softball team’s home venue. Thanks to the benevolence of the Andrews Trust and the priority Strollo places on academics, the academic counseling center underwent a significant renovation and expansion and continues to receive technology upgrades. In the past eight years, the department, which has been recognized as a national leader for its graduation rates, has had many successes on and off the playing field. Under his leadership, Youngstown State earned full NCAA certification in 2007. This review of governance and commitment to rules, academic integrity, and equity and student-athlete well-being showed YSU athletics

operates in substantial conformity with the operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership. More than half of the current 300-plus student-athletes have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher while nine teams have an overall GPA of at least 3.0. YSU’s Academic Progress Rate is well above the national average for public institutions, and its 93 percent graduation rate is at an all-time high. Eleven student-athletes have captured Academic All-America accolades while a total of 46 have been named to Academic All-District teams. YSU has won 13 Horizon League titles, and it won back-to-back Gateway Football Conference (now the Missouri Valley Football Conference) championships in 2005 and 2006. Most recently, YSU added the 2009 Horizon League Women’s Outdoor Track and Field and Women’s Golf Championships to its trophy cases. In Strollo’s role as the Executive Director of the Penguin Club, the organization has increased athletic endowed scholarship contributions annually. Annual events keep improving every year, and the growth of the Football Alumni Club has had a positive impact on the department. Strollo returned to his alma mater in 1996 as athletic business manager. In March 2000, he was named the school’s Associate Executive Director of Athletics. In his short time in that capacity, he helped spearhead the transition into the Horizon League. He has strong ties to the local community and to the athletic department. He grew up in nearby Austintown and attended Fitch High School. He played football for YSU from 1988 through 1991 for Coach Jim Tressel and was named captain of the first Division I-AA National Championship team in 1991. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Youngstown State in June, 1993. Ron and his wife, Nicole, reside in Austintown with their two children, Ryan and Rachel. Nicole is a former YSU student-athlete who competed in track and cross country from 1989 through 1993.

Penguin Nickname Legend Prior to 1933, Youngstown College had been referred to as "Y" College, YoCo, Wye Collegians and many times, simply the "Locals." There are two accounts of how the Penguin nickname came to be, and interestingly enough they come from the same evening on Jan. 30, 1933. But throughout the season prior to that contest, many of the members of the 1932-33 varsity men’s basketball team and their friends on campus spent idle moments in the cafeteria discussing suitable new names for our school sports combines, basketball, and fencing that year. The names considered covered every conceivable spectrum of animals, birds, and things associated with the steel city, but none seemed to fit. There was always someone who pointed out an inadequacy of some sort. The first account states that on a cold, freezing night at a men’s basketball game at West Liberty State Teachers College, in West Liberty, W. Va., a spectator watching the members of the team stomp on the floor and swing their arms made them look like Penguins and without a nickname, the fans took a liking to the word. The second account comes from the trip to West Liberty in which the road that evening had been YSU Alma Mater hit by a snowfall between one and two feet deep. Within the next five or six weeks, Penguins became our newly accepted nickname both in the Jambar and on the sports pages of the then two local newspapers. The name was introduced after the first game with Slippery Rock in the Dec. 15, 1933 issue of the "Jambar". The Youngstown Telegram first used the nickname in a headline on Dec. 29, 1933 while The Vindicator first acknowledged the nickname in its Jan. 27, 1934 edition.

The City of Youngstown was incorporated in 1867 and named for John Young, who purchased approximately 15,000 acres (the entire township) for slightly more than $16,000 in 1797 from the United States Government. With its setting in the Mahoning Valley along the Mahoning River, Youngstown quickly grew to become a thriving city in the 1920s as part of the industrial belt that stretched from Massachusetts to the Mississippi River. The iron and steel industry created a strong blue-collar work ethic in the city and surrounding areas that is still very evident, even decades after the closing of the mills. At its peak, Youngstown was the third-largest steel producing city in the country. Today, with a new citywide revitalization plan coordinated between the city, Youngstown State University and nearly 200 volunteers, neighborhood organizations and businesses, a new vision for Youngstown Quick Facts exists. The award-winning plan, Population: 83,906 Youngstown 2010, calls for a more Area: 34.2 square miles diverse and vibrant economy Metropolitan: 586,939 founded on the current strengths with the city and region, such as YSU, the health care sector and Attractions • More than 50 area golf courses the arts community. In addition to YSU’s four national championships in the 1990s, many coaches have ties to the city. Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel is formerly the head coach at YSU, and current college head coaches Bo Pelini (Nebraska), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Mike Stoops (Arizona) and Mark Mangino (Kansas) are all from the Valley.

The view of Lake Glacier from Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park is one of the most scenic areas in the Mahoning Valley.

Five boxing champions have their roots in Youngstown. The most recent champion, middleweight Kelly Pavlik, wore the Youngstown State “Y” and Pete the Penguin on his trunks when he beat Jermaine Taylor on HBO in 2008.

Built in 2005, the 5,700-seat Covelli Centre is a large part of the downtown revitalization project. It houses minor league hockey and arena football, concerts, ice shows and much more.

The amount of local media coverage dedicated to Youngstown State athletics ranks near the top in both the Horizon League and the Missouri Valley Football Conference. As the main sports attraction in the Mahoning Valley, the Penguins receive daily coverage from five television stations, two major newspapers and several radio stations. Regional media coverage extends to Akron, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Missouri Valley Football Conference contests are frequently featured as nationally televised games of the week, and the Horizon League has a partnership with ESPN and its stations to broadcast men’s and women’s basketball games. Football and basketball games are broadcast locally on tape-delay.

Live Internet Coverage In addition to coverage provided by traditional media, the successes of Youngstown State studentathletes are regularly broadcast live across the world over the Internet. The Horizon League is a recognized leader in video streaming through the Horizon League Network (HLN) and produced more than 300 free, live events during the 2008-09 academic year. In addition to live games, HLN includes highlight vignettes of all-19 League championships, weekly highlight videos during the men’s and women’s basketball season and other special programming covering Horizon League institutions, coaches and student-athletes. Nearly every one of YSU’s home men’s and women’s basketball games and all league road contests are broadcast over the HLN.
