Yosemite Grant Act 1864-2014: 150 Years of Inspiring Generations
osemite has inspired generations of people for thousands of years. On June 30, 1864, amid the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act, establishing Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove. From the beginning, this act was a legacy for our nation. Today, the preservation of Yosemite inspires the world. The Yosemite Grant was the first land grant to protect wild lands for the enjoyment of people. In addition, this grant marked the first California State Park. With the help of many partners and friends, Yosemite and the gateway communities are hosting a nationwide commemorative effort to honor the 150th anniversary of this significant event that spurred the national park idea. In 1890, the land surrounding these two tracts was designated Yosemite National Park. John Muir’s persuasive words to President Roosevelt and state authorities led to combining Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove into Yosemite National Park in 1906. Visionaries like Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, and Galen Clark understood that the wonders of the American wilderness are not only our inheritance, but our responsibility. Now, 150 years later, the promise of the Yosemite Grant endures as this beloved national park opens its arms to over 4 million people annually who marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty and gain a new understanding of the importance of preserving our wild lands.
Calendar of Anniversary Activities The park and gateway communities have planned a multitude of activities from artist events to festivals, history symposiums to Jr. Ranger programs that will commemorate the 150th anniversary. In addition the Yosemite Conservancy has released Seeds of the Future, a new Dayton Duncan book, a collection of 150 published visitor stories, and a special Ken Burns documentary to honor this milestone. A complete list of over 100 activities and projects is available at www.nps.gov/yose/anniversary. Future Anniversaries Did you know that the world of conservation has many anniversaries over the next few years? Watch for opportunities in the Yosemite region for you to engage in these upcoming milestones:
September 3, 2014 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act October 1, 2015 125th Anniversary of Yosemite National Park October 1, 2015 125th Anniversary of Sequoia National Park August 25, 2016 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service Did You Know? In 1855, James Mason Hutchings led the first tourist party into the Yosemite area. In this year, a total of 42 tourists visited Yosemite. One of these visitors, artist Thomas Ayres, published the first sketches of Yosemite Valley. The first published description of the Yosemite Valley appeared in Hutchings' Mariposa Gazette. In 1857, Galen Clark explored and publicized the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. In 1864, after Senator John Conness introduced the Yosemite Grant in Congress and President Lincoln signed it, Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove were given to the State of California to be administered. A board of commissioners was appointed to supervise the Grant. On May 1st, 1866, Galen Clark was named the first Yosemite Guardian in charge of the Yosemite Grant for the State of California. He became, in effect, the first California State Park Ranger. In 1868, influential writer and conservationist John Muir first came to Yosemite.

osemite National Park is such an enticing, beautiful location that each year millions of people load up in their car with the goal of “Going to Yosemite.” Many of these people miss out on a host of attractions along the way. That's where the "Fossils to Falls Trail" comes in. The Fossils to Falls Trail shows that travel can be about more than the destination, but also the journey. Starting in Chowchilla and winding through the diverse landscape of Madera County, through the vineyards of Madera up to the foothill communities at the base of the mighty Sierra Nevada mountain range, it ends with the natural splendor of Yosemite.

and shows why Madera is known as the Heart of Pomegranate Country, as does the annual Pomegranate Festival the first Saturday of every November.
The “fossils” of the Fossils to Falls Trail come from the Fossil Discovery Center in Chowchilla, an amazing facility showcasing the remains of Sabre Tooth Cats, Shortfaced Bears, Colombian Mammoths and numerous other ice-age mammals. Each of the specimens were found right there adjacent to the museum, making it the largest Pleistocene-era fossil bed in the western US.
Another option is to tour the many wineries of the Madera Wine Trail. These small, family-owned wineries have been gaining big reputations over the years and winning awards when competing against large wineries from elsewhere in the state. Located throughout Madera County, the wineries of the Madera Wine Trail are perfect stops along the Fossils to Falls Trail for experienced wine lovers and newcomers alike. Their tasting rooms, often staffed by the winemaker himself, are approachable and the crews love to share the passion and processes that go into their wines.
Agriculture is a big part of the western half of Madera County, which is evident in the numerous farms you will see as you explore this part of the trail. Attractions like Home Grown Cellars, a working pomegranate farm, lets you see where your food comes from
As you continue along the trail you’ll notice the landscape changing from the plains of the valley floor to the hills and mountains of Eastern Madera County. Grasses give way to mighty trees, and the towns get smaller yet still have a wealth of attractions and activities to offer.

a whole host of fun events year round, and you’ll see why Bass Lake is such a popular destination along the trail. Oakhurst offers much of the trail’s lodging, with a wide variety of hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals throughout the area. Other attractions, such as the Golden Chain Theatre, several museums, as well as central California’s only five-star restaurant, Erna’s Elderberry House, make Oakhurst a main hub along the Fossils to Falls Trail. The Oakhurst area is also said to be home to more artists per capita than anywhere else in the country, and this is evident by the numerous art galleries in town. Each year hundreds of artists open their studios and homes to the public during the annual Sierra Art Trails Open Studio Tour. Further up the road is the small town of Fish Camp, home to an immensely popular stop along the trail, the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad. There you can pan for gold, tour the Thornberry Museum and ride aboard an authentic Shay locomotive, one of which is over a century old. It’s like riding back in time when you take a tour aboard these relics of a bygone era.

From Las Vegas-style gaming in Coarsegold at the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino to unique small-town events like the North Fork Loggers Jamboree or Oakhurst’s Fall Festival, these towns provide the authentic experience many of today’s travelers are seeking. History is also alive here, as numerous museums throughout the region highlight the Native American tribes, gold miners, loggers, and other hearty pioneers who made the area what it is today. Check out the Coarsegold Historic Museum or Fresno Flats Historic Village and Park in Oakhurst to really feel what it was like for those early settlers over 100 years ago. Walking through the door is like walking back in time. Bass Lake is another popular stop along the trail, offering a staggering array of activities on and off the water. What makes Bass Lake truly special as a destination, however, is the fact that virtually anything you need is moments from the shore. There is every type of lodging, from camping to resorts and cabins to vacation home rentals as well as shopping, dining and more, all at the water’s edge. Add in some scenic beauty and

Finally you will find yourself at the end of the trail in Yosemite National Park. As you tour the thundering waterfalls, lush meadows and towering granite cliffs, you can look back on your trip and know you’ve undertaken a fantastic journey, collecting the experiences and memories of not just your lifetime, but the lifetimes of the countless people who made California’s Gateway to Yosemite the beautiful, magical destination that it is.

Fish Camp 5 mins to Yosemite
Jarrod Lyman
Kristal Leonard
Just before the entrance to Yosemite is Fish Camp, a small community with beautiful bed and breakfasts, the world-renowned Tenaya Lodge, a full-service resort and a historic railroad. One of the most popular attractions in the region is the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, which operates two Shay Locomotives, one built in 1927 and the other in 1913, which take you on a journey through the Sierra National Forest and history. Ride the Logger back in time to when men harvested lumber from these forests to fuel the industrial revolution in the country. While there, see the very tools used by loggers more than 100 years ago along the mountain, or pan for gold to see how the '49ers tried to eke out a living. On the weekends, take the Moonlight Special as you enjoy a delicious BBQ dinner. Ride the train through the cool evening air, and enjoy live entertainment throughout the night. Yosemite is a land of wonder and beauty. Contact us to help you plan your adventure, and see everything it has to offer.
Dawn M. Ingraham
Yosemite National Park is the crown jewel of the National Park Service and the final attraction along Madera County's Fossils to Falls Trail. With its granite cliffs and majestic waterfalls, Yosemite's natural beauty touches all who experience it. Yosemite's most iconic landmarks, such as El Capitan, Yosemite Falls and Half Dome, are located in the valley. However there is much more to see in Yosemite than this valley, as it only makes up about 5%of the park. Attractions such as the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia, located just two miles from the southern entrance, add to the Yosemite experience as you see more of what Yosemite has to offer. These massive trees tower above the landscape and inspire a sense of awe and wonder in anyone who stands beneath them. Wawona is another popular fun spot outside the Valley that offers a wide array of things to see and do. from camping alongside the scenic Merced River to experience what life was like for people who first settled there in the 1800s. in the Pioneer History Center. A little further on is Glacier Point, a sweeping vista that offers a stunning panorama of Yosemite Valley and the high country. Here you are at eye-level with Half Dome, looking down upon the valley and its many waterfalls, and in a prime location for some of the most spectacular sunsets you could ever imagine. During the winter, the same road that takes you to Glacier Point also heads to Badger Pass, one of the only ski resorts located in a national park and home to a world-renowned ski school. Enjoy downhill skiing or snowboarding, or try your hand at cross-country skiing and enjoy stunning views of Half Dome as you glide across fresh snow.

Yosemite National Park
To really experience Yosemite, try taking a guided tour. You can make a reservation with one of a number of private tour companies outside the park, some of which will even pick you up right at your hotel. Not only will you get fabulous insight into the park that you would never learn on your own, but everyone in your party can enjoy the scenery, as no one is stuck having to pay attention to the road. If you do head in to Yosemite on your own, try the free valley shuttle bus with numerous stops. It's free, and its regular schedule means you can spend time at each location without worrying about catching the next bus.
Elizabeth Christie
Yosemite receives the largest number of visitors in the summer, but to really appreciate the magic of the park, one needs to see it during each of the seasons. Spring is when Yosemite comes alive. The trees and meadows turn a bright, vivid green and the waterfalls flow at their peak. One favorite is to catch the dogwoods in bloom, while others prefer the brilliant displays of color put on by the wildflowers. Fall is a time of transition and beauty. While the numerous evergreens never change, the many oaks, dogwoods and other deciduous trees put on a spectacular show of color. The contrast between the deep greens versus reds and yellows is breathtaking to be certain. Winter is a time of peace and tranquility in Yosemite, especially after a new snow. Time seems to stop for a while and the world holds its breath. In some parts of the valley you can be almost alone as you enjoy the serenity. Other areas are still very much alive, such as at the skating rink in Curry Village. One great way to illustrate the park's diversity is to find a favorite spot and take the same photo in each season.
