Great Outdoors California’s Gateway to Yosemite makes it easy to get out there and enjoy the Great Outdoors. Yosemite has 800 miles of hiking trails, a magnificent lake to swim or kayak, granite domes to summit, thousands of acres of wilderness to backpack. If you’re captivated by the feel of rocks under your feet, Yosemite National Park is a climber’s mecca. Madera County offers its fair share of outdoor activities, as well. Hike, bike, kayak, fish, golf, zipline, climb and more! If you’re the competitive sort, try your skills on the annual Bass Lake Triathlon, bike the Grizzly Century or enter the Smokey Bear Run. If you think fishing isn’t competitive, you need to throw your line into Bass Lake the first weekend in May for the Annual Fishing Derby. If you’ve got the skill and the luck, you may land a $10,000 fish! Karl Bralich

In California, there’s no place bigger and better than Yosemite National Park. Its nearly 1,200 square miles of splendor contain one of the tallest waterfalls, one of the largest granite monoliths and some of the largest trees in the world. Its borders encompass 800 miles of hiking trails, yet with 1.1 miles and a little effort you can summit a dome that gives a nearly 360-degree view of the entire park. In a day you can barely scratch the surface of all there is to see and do, but Madera County’s Highway 41 provides a natural progression to the park’s major features and a perfect path to whichever adventure you decide to undertake. ◆◆ Explore the largest living beings on earth, the Giant Sequoia trees. Yosemite National Park contains three groves of Giant Sequoias, with Mariposa Grove being the largest. Yosemite will start an extensive restoration to preserve the lives of these gentle giants in 2015 and 2016 so access to Mariposa Grove will be limited. You can still admire Giant Sequoias near the south entrance to the park in the peaceful seclusion of Nelder Grove northeast of Oakhurst. Other Giant Sequoia groves in Yosemite are the Tuolumne and Merced Groves. A beautiful walk of about one mile downhill is required to reach each of these groves. The Merced (near the Big Oak Flat entrance) is the smallest grove. Slightly larger is the Tuolumne Grove, on Tioga Road just beyond Crane Flat.

◆◆ Explore history in Wawona. Take in the beauty of the Victorian-era Wawona Hotel, go golfing at the only golf course inside a national park, ride a horse or traverse a New-England-style covered bridge. Take your canine companion on a walk around the meadow on the only trail in the park where dogs are permitted, or take a four-mile (oneway) hike to the cascades of Chilnaualna Falls.

raft down the Merced River. Enjoy a leisurely lunch or magnificent dinner in the historic Ahwahnee Hotel dining room. Don’t miss the museums, art galleries, Indian village. Stroll through the Yosemite Cemetery, resting place of Galen Clark, who planted six Giant Sequoias surrounding the grave he dug for himself. (Five survive today.)

◆◆ Explore expanses of granite, massive peaks, grand vistas, waterfalls and a birds-eye view of Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point, a whopping 3,000 feet above the valley floor. Hike 1.1 miles to the top of Sentinel Dome for a spectacular sunset or extend the hike another 3 miles out to Taft Point and the Fissures for another dramatic valley view. A number of hikes begin or end at Glacier Point. In summer, profusions of wildflowers abound along the trail from McGurk Meadow to Dewey Point at the very rim of the Valley.

If you’ve accomplished all of this in one day, you’ve emerged exhausted yet exhilarated and already planning your next adventure to Yosemite where you will be sure to allow much more time to savor its wonders.

◆◆ Explore the magic of Yosemite Valley, the heart of the park. Seven miles long and one mile wide, it contains the most iconic features of the Queen of National Parks: Half Dome and El Capitan. Turn your binoculars on El Cap in search of intrepid climbers, hike to the top of a waterfall or two, or obtain a permit to do the 17-mile round trip to the top of Half Dome. Ride a bike or a horse. Bass Lake is family-friendly with dayuse picnic areas in addition to lodging at three full-service resorts, many lakefront rental cabins, and lots of campgrounds around the lake. There is no lack of dining options. Grab a delicious burger, dine on authentic Mexican food, select items from the markets, treat yourself to a pizza or enjoy fine dining. There is lots of shopping around the lake from the resort gift shops to quaint shops in the Pines Village. No wonder Sunset Magazine named Bass Lake as one of the “West’s Best Lakes!”

Some folks believe the best way to see a place is on foot.

Favorite Hikes Paul Mullins

John Muir said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” Listed below are a few of our local favorite hiking trails inside and outside Yosemite National Park. 1. Easy and dog-friendly – Wawona Meadow Loop (Hwy 41 across from Wawona Hotel) – 3.5 mile loop - This is as easy a hike as you’ll find in Yosemite and the only true hike where your dog can accompany you. Start on the road across from the Wawona Hotel and follow it around the back side of the golf course. The trail is wide and, for the most part, flat.

NANCY ROBBINS

2. Easy to Moderate – Sentinel Dome/Taft Point Loop (Glacier Point Road) – 2.2 miles round trip to the top of Sentinel Dome, 4.5-mile loop to Sentinel Dome and Taft Point. Disclaimer: An “easy” hike distance-wise, it starts at 7,500 feet elevation, and the trek up the dome is steep. Watch for Sentinel Dome trailhead sign. Turn right to head for the Dome or left to make Taft Point your destination. Sentinel Dome displays a nearly 360˚ view of Yosemite. Sunsets and full moons are especially spectacular. 3. Strenuous but Glorious - 4-Mile Trail & Panorama Trail Combined (Yosemite Valley) – 14 miles r/t. Some believe this is the most magnificent hike in Yosemite Valley (shorter than Half Dome— no permit needed). Hike the 4-Mile-Trail to Glacier Point, head back to Yosemite Valley via the Panorama Trail, then down the John Muir or the Mist Trail, visiting three waterfalls up-close, with an expansive view of Yosemite Valley’s north rim. NANCY ROBBINS

4. Strenuous – Chilnaualna Falls in Wawona – about 8 miles r/t – Not all waterfalls are in Yosemite Valley. Go up, up, up to impressive views, wildflowers in season and lovely cascades. Not easy but worth the trek. A short, magnificent hike takes you to the first cascade if you don’t want to do the full trail.

The Central Valley is known for its delicious fruits, vegetables, nuts, and wines. Madera County sits at the center, and is home to working pomegranate farms, vineyards and some of the freshest fruits and nuts anywhere. The family-run wineries of the Madera Wine Trail invite visitors to experience high-quality hand-crafted wines grown locally. A number of facilities host special events through the year to celebrate harvests and holidays. Be sure to stop by Home Grown Cellars for amazing pomegranates, a seasonal butterfly sanctuary,

tours and tastings. Then make your way to Valley Pistachio Country Store for tasty fruit, and, you guessed it, pistachios. Top off your day with a "farm-to-table" meal at the Vineyard Restaurant, family-owned and operated since 1977, featuring locally-grown fruits and vegetables in season.

Arts & Culture RoGER ROBINETTE

The arts thrive in Madera County—photography, painting in every medium imaginable, sculpture, fabric arts, woodcarving and glass work. If you can imagine it, a local artist creates it. The first weekend of each October art explodes all over Madera County with the annual Sierra Arts Trail Open-Studio Weekend. Grab a copy of the keepsake Sierra Art Trails catalog and plot your travels to mountain artists’ studios. It’s also a great way to get acquainted with the area.

Nancy Robbins

Theatre is alive and well at the Golden Chain Theatre. From “boo-the-villain” old-time melodramas to musicals to dramas, it’s all waiting for you.

During the rest of the year, art galleries and collections from Fish Camp to Madera make viewing and purchasing unique art easy and affordable.

In the Sierra Nevada, fire gives birth to new life. Visitors to Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada are destined to see some changes in 2015. During 2014 a series of forest fires swept the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, raced through the mountain community of Oakhurst, in Yosemite’s back country and along the Highway 140 corridor into the national park. They brought tragedy to some but also brought promise of rejuvenation wherever the fire touched. Dry conditions made the situation ripe for wildfires. That threat was realized a number of times and underscored the necessity for all to understand and practice fire safety. As a byproduct of these fires, affected communities gathered amazing support to help rebuild lives and restore property. The Yosemite Meadow Fire began as a lightning strike managed for weeks as a controlled burn, when strong winds whipped it into a full-blown wildfire. This area, which hadn’t burned in generations, provides an example of the regenerative benefits of fire, as the wilderness comes back to life in spring with new growth, wildlife and enhanced ecosystems. The practice of prescribed burning restores health to fire-adapted environments by reducing tangled ground brush and forest litter and helps maintain the many plant and animal species whose habitats depend on periodic fire. Preventive prescribed burns also mitigate catastrophic damage of wildfire on public lands and surrounding communities. Out of the ashes comes rebirth.

Native American Heritage

Barbara Ezell Nancy Robbins

Evidence of the First Inhabitants of California’s Gateway to Yosemite abounds, with sights and sounds of the area’s Mono, Chukchansi, Yokuts and Miwok traditions. Explore North Fork’s Sierra Mono Museum, one of the few Native-owned-and-operated museums in the country, with an excellent display of local basketry. The museum receives much of its support from the annual Indian Fair Days pow wow held the first weekend of every August. Venture to the Wassama Roundhouse in Ahwahnee, site of local ceremonies. In October, the public is welcomed to Gathering Day at the Roundhouse, while the Chukchansi pow wow takes place in Coarsegold the first weekend of October.

Barbara Ezell

In Yosemite Valley don’t miss the Yosemite Museum, staffed by descendants of original inhabitants of the area, who give daily cultural demonstrations.

Historic Sites & Museums

Nancy Robbins

California’s Gateway to Yosemite has seen its share of history. “Madera” means lumber, and the logging industry played a major role in the area’s development. Celebrate that contribution when you visit Fish Camp’s Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad and museum. Check out museums and historic sites such as Fresno Flats in Oakhurst, Coarsegold Historic Society & Museum, the Charles Miller House in Raymond and the Madera Historic Museum in Courthouse Park. Explore the area’s native heritage at the Sierra Mono Museum in North Fork, or go WAY back in history to the Pleistocene Era at Chowchilla’s Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County.

In Oakhurst there’s even a museum for childen: the Children’s Museum of the Sierra, where they can push, pull, prod and poke to their heart’s content.

Sierra Vista Scenic Byway

Darvin Atkeson

Known as “Secret Yosemite” the 80-mile Sierra Vista Scenic Byway is populated with domes, rivers, a hidden waterfall or two, geologic wonders such as Arch Rock and Globe Rock and expansive views all the way to Mammoth Mountain. Visit Nelder Grove of Giant Sequoias, Fresno Dome, Ross Cabin, Mammoth Pool, Mile High Overlook and make a stop at Jones

Nancy Robbins

Store for a piece of freshly-baked pie big enough for two. Visitors to the Byway in 2015 have the rare opportunity to witness forest regeneration after a wildfire burned through the area in July/August 2014. The Byway closes during winter, and it’s always wise to check road conditions if it’s rained or snowed prior to your visit.

Pet-Friendly & Bear Aware

Brent R. Paull

The beauty of Yosemite is so special everyone wants to see it, including your pet. Hike the Wawona Brent R. Paull Meadow Loop, the one dirt trail where Rover is welcome, located in Wawona. In Yosemite Valley, do a walking tour of the Valley floor using the 12 miles of paved bike trails. Dogs are not allowed off the pavement on other trails, nor are they allowed in Mariposa Grove, on shuttle buses or in stores or hotels, so take a picnic, stroll Brent R. Paull and enjoy! Sierra National Forest is supremely dogfriendly. Explore the many miles of forest trails to your heart's content with

Rover at your side, on a leash. Go for a one-mile walk or a 14-mile backpack adventure — your choice. After you're done exploring, head back to civilization for human ice cream, canine treats and any other supplies you or your traveling buddy need. Be Bear-Aware. There are bears inside Yosemite and Sierra National Forest. Nancy Robbins If you come face-to-face with a bear, he’s not after you. He wants your edibles. Keep all food (including items with a scent such as toothpaste, deodorant and even chapstick) out of sight. Bears know what food looks and smells like, and they will break into a car to get it. Make use of bear boxes where available and drive carefully.

Majestic Mountain Loop 125th Anniversary Celebrate the National Park Anniversaries along the Majestic Mountain Loop: Visit Sequoia, Kings Canyon & Yosemite National Parks, and you will have completed the Majestic Mountain Loop. The Majestic Mountain Loop is a suggested itinerary where visitors can see all three parks in as little as 3 days. Highlighted are some of the most popular “must see” attractions of Sequoia, Kings Canyon & Yosemite National Parks. While the Majestic Mountain Loop is crafted for people to hit all three parks in three days, the website has suggested alternatives for people who have more time to explore. To do the “Loop” you can fly in, drive in or take a guided tour. In 2015, Sequoia National Park celebrates its 125th Anniversary. It was established on September 25, 1890 making it the nation’s second national park and the oldest in California. Just a week later, on October 1, 1890, additional legislation was signed into law by President Benjamin Harrison creating Yosemite National Park and General Grant National Park and expanding Sequoia National Park.

contain the world’s largest tree (General Sherman); the tallest peak (Mt. Whitney) in the lower 48 states; hold one third of the world’s naturallyoccurring Giant Sequoias; and host over 1.6 million people from around the world.

Andreas Funke

Majestic Mountain Loop

For Yosemite, the legislation preserved and protected more than 1,500 square miles, including Tuolumne Meadows, the park’s high country, and Hetch Hetchy. Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias were still under the control of the State of California due to the provisions of the Yosemite Grant signed by President Abraham Lincoln Delaware North on June 30, 1864, which paved the way for national parks across the county. However, the combination of the legislation and the existing Yosemite Grant comprised most of Yosemite National Park as it is known today.

After visiting Yosemite and spending time with famed naturalist John Muir, President Theodore Roosevelt pledged to make Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove a part of Yosemite National Park. The State of California ceded Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove to the federal government June 11, 1906. The National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, was established on August 25, 1916. In 2016, the entire National Park Service will commemorate the Centennial, celebrating 100 years of caring for America’s treasures. To learn more about all the options and see a complete list of stops along the “Loop,” visit www.MajesticMountainLoop.com.

Today Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks preserve 1,353 square miles of which 1,310 are managed as wilderness. They Majestic Mountain Loop

Once called Fresno Flats, Oakhurst is the largest community in the foothills of Madera County. Oakhurst is home to numerous museums which explore the area's past, dating back to 1873. There are grocery stores and ample shopping opportunities, a variety of restaurants and lodging options. Oakhurst is home to central California's only five-diamond lodging choice and five-star Restaurant: Erna's Elderberry House and Chateau du Sureau. This elegant inn and restaurant is truly a unique experience. The region is home to more artists than anywhere else. See the beauty of Yosemite and Madera County and you'll know from where they draw their inspiration. Visit many galleries and Morgan Voorhis meet the artists in person on Sierra Art Trails, an annual open studio tour featuring over 100 artists every October. For a fun evening of melodrama, visit the Golden Chain Theatre. The Golden Chain Theatre has been running for over 40 years. Boo the villain and cheer for the hero; you're guaranteed an entertaining evening. For adventure, try Zip Yosemite north of Oakhurst and enjoy a wild ride high up in the tree-tops. Looking for golf? Then hit the links at River Creek Golf Course. Don’t forget to stop by the World-Famous Talking Bear and listen to what he has to say about the area. Victoria Rankin Hughes

Small Towns Chowchilla, Madera, Madera Ranchos & Raymond

Small towns excel at rolling out the welcome mat for visitors. The small towns of Madera County love to show off our special places. Start in Chowchilla, where they drive cattle right down Robertson Boulevard in the Chowchilla Western Stampede in early spring, or dig up fossils at the site of one of the largest middlePleistocene fossil excavations in Donn Hoyer North America. Madera & Madera Ranchos are communities with a rich and diverse history. Named for the lumber that was felled in the Sierra Nevada and brought to the city, Madera is also home to fertile fields, giving ample opportunity for agritourism exploration.

Taste your way throughout Madera and beyond with the wineries along the Madera Wine Trail. Enjoy fullbodied reds, refreshing whites and sumptuous dessert wines at the wineries and tasting rooms along the trail.

Nancy Robbins

Travel east to Raymond, whose claim-tofame was the final stop on the only stage route into Yosemite for many years where Teddy Roosevelt finished up his historic visit to Yosemite. The Charles Miller Museum entices you to learn more about the town’s history.

To see firsthand why Madera is known as The Heart of Pomegranate Country, stop at Home Grown Cellars. You can see an actual pomegranate farm in action, take a trolley ride through the operation and shop in the country store featuring numerous pomegranate items like pomegranate honey, jelly and of course, pomegranate juice.
