WELCOME TO YORK THEATRE ROYAL’S AUTUMN WINTER SEASON 2009. YOU’LL NOTICE OUR SEASON STARTS A BIT DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR AS WE LAUNCH A BRAND NEW FESTIVAL, TAKEOVER09.

York Theatre Royal has a growing reputation nationally for the work we do with children and young people. We thought our £5 ticket for under 25s and students meant it couldn’t be cheaper and easier to experience live theatre but in December 2008 we were awarded a grant to take part in the Arts Council’s Free Theatre initiative, ‘A Night Less Ordinary’. This means anyone 25 and under can sign up for a Free Theatre Pass and see shows for free at York Theatre Royal until Feb 2011. 2

You can download a form online or pick one up from the Box Office. We work with thousands of young people each academic year providing a vibrant programme of creative, cross-curricular projects. We run one of the countries largest youth theatres with over 300 members aged between 5 and 18 years. In addition our newly formed Young Actors Company is a talented group of performers aged between 18 and 25.

We have a great reputation for producing shows suitable for littlies and also work closely with Pilot Theatre to produce and support cutting edge work for teenagers (check out The Fever Chart on page 18). All in all we love having lots of young people around the theatre, and that got us thinking… So many young people experience our work on stage and off and we think they have a pretty good idea about what they want to see.

160862:160862 30/06/2009 11:42 Page 3

TakeOver09 is an exciting and brave idea. We will be giving the theatre over to a team of under 26s from 19 Sep – 10 Oct and they have been working hard over the last few months to create a fantastic programme of events for people of all ages! The Festival is all about providing young people with the opportunity to work in a

professional environment with the support of our staff on every aspect of our work from the budgeting to backstage, from marketing to catering. We think it will be a fantastic festival and will create long lasting relationships with the young people involved. In this brochure you’ll meet some of

the team and get a flavour for what will be on, but check out the website for more information. www.takeoverfestival.co.uk

KRAPP’S LAST TAPE TUE 13 – SAT 24 OCT

Directed by Matt Aston Designed by Mark Walters Lighting Design by James Farncombe Sound Design by Paul Stear

Having played to critical acclaim in 2003 & 2006, award-winning actor Kenneth Alan Taylor brings Samuel Beckett’s classic monodrama to life once again.

On the occasion of his birthday Krapp reviews his life and listens to tape recordings he has made decades earlier, when he was young and in his prime. He listens to the promises he made and the fruition to which they came… As he listens to his past, to these days gone by, all categorised and coded by spool, he begins to face the realisation that he has wasted his life, a life that now approaches its end. Krapp's realisation becomes increasingly poignant as he begins to record his last tape…

“This one man show is a triumph for Taylor, proving beyond doubt his power to hold an audience” The Stage on Krapp’s Last Tape in 2003 Dates: Tue 13 – Sat 24 Oct Time: 7.45pm Performance Location: Studio Tickets: £10 (Tue – Thu) £12 (Fri & Sat), £5 students & u25s, concessions available

CLARE TEAL AND HER MUSICIANS THU 22 OCT Clare has that special talent of being able to blend being a unique singer with an excellent ability to chat to an audience using sharp wit. Following huge demand after last year's sell out visit, the singer, songwriter, BBC Radio 2 personality, columnist and all round funny woman returns to York with a brand new show. Voted ‘Jazz Vocalist of the Year’ three years running and blessed with a stunning voice, the ability to write songs that promise to be classics and a wonderful warm humour, Clare is a rare commodity, and in every way a major star. This uplifting new show, launched at Ronnie Scott’s earlier this year, features brilliant musicians, sparkling arrangements, and inspired interpretations of great songs old and new. “Wonderful. Britain’s favourite and Liverpool’s Poet Laureate, Roger McGough, dips his magic quill by adapting Molière’s sublime comedy, a scathingly funny lampoon on hypochondria and the ‘quack’ medical profession.

Argan is a healthy, wealthy gentleman, convinced that he is seriously ill. Obsessed with medicinal tinkerings and tonics, he is blind to the goings on in his own household. But, his most efficacious cure doesn't come in either bottle or bedpan, but in his sharptongued servant, who has a cunning plan to reveal the truth and open her master’s eyes.

It follows Brooke from his time at Cambridge University to his death in the Aegean Sea in 1915. The play uncovers more of the real man, more of what lies beneath the myth of a young, beautiful, fallen warrior. It reveals a far more complex and radical man, a man with a tumultuous personal life and a man not afraid to shock his audience. Featuring many of Brooke’s iconic poems, Rupert Brooke is the fascinating journey of a man who in his own words saw his life as 'a flash between darknesses'. “For some 75 minutes we are held spellbound by the portrayal of the young poet...” Doncaster Free Press Dates: Sun 8 – Mon 9 Nov Times: Sun 3.00pm & 7.00pm, Mon 2.30pm & 7.30pm Performance Location: Main House Tickets: £12, students & u25s £5, concessions available

THE FEVER CHART THU 29 OCT – SAT 14 NOV Written by Naomi Wallace Directed by Katie Posner and Marcus Romer Designed by Catherine Chapman The Fever Chart tells three distinct but thematically related stories which explore the possibility of humanity in the most inhumane conditions. In settings which range from a Zoo in Rafah, Palestine to a hospital in Tel Aviv to a yard in Iraq, the play draws us into a world of war, of high emotion and gestures of feeling with poetic storytelling of the most engaging nature. The writer explores political tensions by grounding them in the human issues of love, life and death moving us from the specific to the universal.

Internationally acclaimed American playwright Naomi Wallace is best known for her deeply political plays, including One Flea Spare and The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek, and is the recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship. “The theatrical event of my week. It brings home the meaning of war, makes it personal, refuses to let it slip into unreality...a taut, beautifully written elegy and it reaches out to us now like a prophecy.” The Observer “...reminds us why we need theatre at a time like this, what the playwright can achieve that the journalist cannot.” The Guardian The production will be accompanied by a range of activities including workshops, talks and further readings for both students and the general public. MY OWN PRIVATE PURGATORY THU 19 – SAT 21 NOV Written by Toby Davies Directed by Kate Plumb Since privatisation, Hades has become embroiled in diabolical bureaucracy, making it virtually impossible to create the perfect personal abyss for every new entrant. There are simply not enough cute kittens on spikes anymore, and working in Hell is a truly hellish proposition. Toby Davies is an established theatre and musical theatre writer, whose credits include Wolves at the Window for Arcola Theatre, Simply Cinderella: A Musical for Leicester Curve and Spittin' Distance, originally for the Stephen Joseph Theatre and subsequently developed at the NT Studio. Dates: Thu 19 – Sat 21 Nov Times: 7.00pm Performance Location: Studio Tickets: Adults £7, Children, students & u25s £5 (part of a double bill with Animal Farm, book for both get £2 off)

22

Adapted from Orwell’s dystopian novel the play explores the corruption of power in a revolution. Taking over the farm, the animals think it is the start of a better life. Their dream is of a world where all animals are equal. But soon the pigs take control and become ‘more equal than others’. One by one the principles of the revolution are abandoned, until the animals have even less freedom than before. Dates: Thu 19 – Sat 21 Nov Times: 8.30pm Performance Location: Studio Tickets: Adults £7, Children, students & u25s £5 (part of a double bill with My Own Private Purgatory, book for both get £2 off)
