SUMMER BROCHURE
2018
“If you look the right way, you can see the Secret Garden whole world is a garden...” The by Frances Hodgson Burnett Adapted by Jessica Swale
WELCOME TO THE SUMMER SEASON AT YORK THEARE ROYAL We are buzzing with excitement that The Secret Garden, adapted by Olivier-award winner Jessica Swale, is our summer centrepiece. Following its huge success at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, we are overjoyed to be remaking it here in York.
Before our garden starts to bloom, we will produce the world première of Jonathan Lewis’ The Be All and End All, starring Imogen Stubbs. This gripping drama charts the course of how a seemingly perfect family life begins to unravel when cheating becomes a code to live by. We also welcome another Olivier-award winner, Janie Dee, to star in Torben Betts’ Monogamy, a thrilling look at life behind the camera with the nation’s favourite TV chef. The hugely acclaimed Birdsong and the UK première of Sting’s musical The Last Ship visit us, before we open Alan Bennett’s The Habit of Art with Original Theatre, and Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry’s National Theatre production of J.B Priestley’s classic An Inspector Calls. Our magical Little Feet Festival returns, plus a vibrant Studio programme that includes tutti frutti’s Keepy Uppy just in time for the World Cup, and English Touring Opera’s This Is My Bed, an opera designed for audiences with special educational needs and disabilities.

Three centuries. One goal. A glorious tale of struggle and sweat. It is 1892. It is 1921. It is 2018. Four women from across the centuries live, breathe, and play football. Whilst each of them face very different obstacles, the possibility that the beautiful game will change their futures - and the world – is tantalisingly close. INSTRUCTIONS FOR BORDER CROSSING Written and performed by Daniel Bye
A twelve-year-old girl sneaks across the border into her own country. Her parents watch her on a computer screen. The works of a half-forgotten performance artist seem to hold the key to bringing down a brutal system operating on our behalf and under our noses. Do you join in? Or do you look the other way? Instructions for Border Crossing is the exposed gearbox of a political thriller. Blending Daniel’s trademark storytelling with a series of live interventions from the audience, the show itself is as unstable as the world it describes.
Charlie Brooks (EastEnders) and Patrick Ryecart (Poldark), Genevieve Gaunt, Jack Archer and Jack Sandle.

PUCCINI: IL TABARRO & GIANNI SCHICCHI
Directed by James Conway (Il tabarro), Liam Steel (Gianni Schicchi) Conducted by Michael Rosewell
Puccini’s one-act operas Il tabarro and Gianni Schicchi could hardly be more different: one is a moody romance ending in a grotesque murder on a barge in Paris, and the other is a sparkling comedy about a family inheritance in Florence. First performed in 2011 to great critical acclaim, this double bill shows Puccini at his finest as a master of theatre that speaks to the heart. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Matthew Kelly
Exploring friendship, rivalry and heartache, this multilayered masterpiece examines the joy, pain and emotional cost of creativity. This production directed by Philip Franks marks the first ever revival of the play and stars the Olivier Award winning Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men; Pride and Prejudice) and David Yelland (Chariots of Fire; The Crown). 'I thought it unlikely that he would be able to equal the success of The History Boys but The Habit of Art is another absolute cracker, often wonderfully and sometimes filthily funny, but also deeply moving.'

When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences. More relevant now than ever, this is a must-see for a whole new generation of theatregoers.

EUROPE’S FIRST EVER POP-UP SHAKESPEAREAN THEATRE Romeo and Juliet
Macbeth Directed by Damian Cruden
Directed by Lindsay Posner
“It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.”
25 JUNE – 2 SEPTEMBER 2018
TOW E R S T · YO R K
This summer Europe’s first ever pop-up Shakespearean Theatre comes to York, offering an experience every bit as exciting, intimate and immersive as audiences would have enjoyed more than 400 years ago. Situated beside 13th century Clifford’s Tower, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre houses an audience of 950, with 600 seated on three tiered balconies around an open-roofed courtyard, and standing room for 350 ‘groundlings’. Four of Shakespeare’s most popular plays will be performed in this dramatic playhouse setting, over a 10 week season. Macbeth will be directed by York Theatre Royal’s Olivier Award-winning Artistic Director Damian Cruden, Associate Director Juliet Forster will direct A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the West End’s renowned Lindsay Posner will direct Romeo and Juliet and Richard III. While an interactive experience awaits those closest to the stage in the courtyard, no seat in the theatre will be more than 15m from the action. With dramatic sword-fights, bubbling cauldrons, wayward fairies, passionate love scenes, gruesome murders and grand poetry, audiences will experience the comic heights and tragic depths of Shakespearean theatre in a memorable setting. Outside the theatre, Shakespeare’s Village showcases the best of Yorkshire’s food and drinks, with free wagon performances and other forms of Elizabethan entertainment, as well as a traditional garden. Entry to the village is free of charge.
“For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”
Macbeth is bloody, fastpaced, action-packed and psychologically tense. Populated by witches, ghosts and haunting apparitions, it tells the story of over-reaching ambition, a toxic marriage, a kingdom in crisis and a man’s encounter with his own darkest self.
The most famous love story ever written, Romeo and Juliet is a tale of young love, grand passion, feuding families, street violence and the cruelties of fate.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Richard III Directed by Lindsay Posner
“Now is the winter of our discontent Made glorious summer by this sun of York.”
Directed by Juliet Forster
“The course of true love never did run smooth.” One of Shakespeare’s funniest and most delightful comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a riot of criss-crossed love and feuding fairies, with clod-hopping amateur actors and a magical potion adding to the mayhem.
Of particular significance to the historic city of York, Shakespeare’s Richard III has undoubtedly influenced Richard’s reputation as one of the most colourful villains in British history. Shakespeare portrays Richard as intelligent and engaging – a gleeful and treacherous villain murdering his way mercilessly to the crown before facing his own demons the night before the Battle of Bosworth.
