"I thought it unlikely that Bennett would be able to equal the success of The History Boys but The Habit of Art is another absolute cracker, often wonderfully and sometimes filthily funny, but also deeply moving."
DAILY TELEGRAPH (reviewing the original National Theatre 2009 production)
Alan Bennett is one our greatest playwrights, with a cavalcade of stage and screen blockbusters including The History Boys, The Madness of King George and Talking Heads. In The Habit of Art, Bennett gives us a play about a meeting between the poet WH Auden and the composer Benjamin Britten – two of the greatest British gay artists of the twentieth century.
Matthew Kelly
Exploring sex, death, creativity and art, this multilayer masterpiece examines friendship, rivalry and the desires of men. After a sold-out National Theatre run, this production directed by Philip Franks marks the first revival of the play and stars the Olivier Award winning Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men; Pride and Prejudice), David Yelland (Chariots of Fire; The Crown) and Veronica Roberts (Peak Practice; Tenko).

NEW NIGERIANS By Oladipo Agboluaje
Nigeria: ‘the Giant of Africa’. Conservatives rule over the biggest economy on the continent, and one of the largest and youngest populations in the world. What if the people wanted something different? What if they got it? As time runs out to build a coalition, can Greatness Ogholi win power without losing his integrity? Could this be the beginning of a new Nigeria? A sparkling satire on the state of populism in our politics, New Nigerians is the smash-hit new comedy from Oladipo Agboluaje (winner of the Alfred Fagon Award for playwriting). Following a sold-out run at London’s Arcola Theatre, Rosamunde Hutt’s side-splitting production arrives in York for six performances only.

It’s 1991 in West Belfast. With their husbands either locked up or killed, Marie, Cassie and Nora are just trying to get on with their lives, despite the bombs, burning buses and soldiers trampling the flower beds. Life must go on – after all, there’s still laundry to do and kids to feed. When a mysterious young woman turns up and disrupts their girls’ night out, the devastating revelations which ensue will shatter dreams and threaten their friendship irrevocably. Sharply funny and moving, the award-winning Bold Girls announced Rona Munro (The James Plays) as one of the best playwrights of her generation in this celebration of women’s strength under siege. Mike is a 16 year old who’s really into his scooter. He’s really into Sarah too. But she’s probably not that into him. His brother Ben is stuck working in a petrol station and dreams of escape and their mum can’t seem to speak anymore. Cars are passing through the dead end town they live in, but they don’t ever stop. One summer, with the temperature rising and the town sweltering in the grip of a heat wave, their lives collide and something has to break. Simon Longman’s funny, poignant and emotionally arresting play about loneliness, dreaming and trying to hope in a town that doesn’t seem to want you to, was shortlisted for the 2015 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting.
Set in Manchester, Oldham and London, My Mother Said I Never Should is a poignant, bittersweet story about love, jealousy and the price of freedom. The play details the lives of four women through the immense social changes of the twentieth century. Using a kaleidoscopic time structure, Charlotte Keatley’s story focuses on four generations of one family as they confront the most significant moments of their lives. Written in 1985 and first staged at Contact, Manchester, Charlotte Keatley’s award-winning play is the most commonly performed work by a female playwright worldwide.
"In its revelation of motherdaughter emotions over the years, the play is without rivals. It is a classic." THE TIMES

"Shoes, shoes, shimmering shoes You’ll jump at the chances, for parties and dances So just put your feet up and give a big hand For the best pair of shoemakers here in the land..." Once upon a time, there were two shoemakers who were very old and very poor. So poor they couldn’t even afford to buy each other Christmas presents. With no wood for the fire and only one piece of leather left to make shoes, there was little festive spirit in the shoemakers’ shop. But one night, just as the snow begins to fall outside and the clock strikes midnight, two mischievous elves appear at the window… 32

BY TRAIN
Exciting plans are now underway to redesign our patio area and transform it into an accessible and attractive outdoor space for our community, theatre audiences and customers. Our aim is to create an all-year-round garden with an outdoor café area and multi-functional space for performances and events. We are working with a garden designer to deliver the project by March 2019 and officially open to the public in April 2019.
But to make this a reality we need your help!
Turn left from the main station entrance and continue along the road and under the city walls.
Turn left and over Lendal Bridge. You will see the Minster in front of you. At the crossroads turn left and York Theatre Royal will be visible on the right hand side. 15-20min walk
BY BUS A number of local bus services stop directly outside the theatre including routes:
With a fundraising target of £50,000 your donation will be gratefully received and will benefit our theatre audiences, customers and wider community for many years to come. You can donate via our website, when booking your next ticket to see a show, or via the donation boxes in the foyer and café areas.
