The end of Winter. The distant cawing of crows. In a furrowed field stands a lonely scarecrow. He is confused and fed up. "You. Scare. Crows. That's what you do. Scare! Crows!" But the cheeky, noisy birds just won't go away! What can he do?
Over 3,500 years after this ancient Sumerian epic was first outlined on stone tablets, storyteller Ben Haggarty and percussionist Manya Maratou, bring Gilgamesh to the stage in an extraordinary and powerful performance. WHEN WE LIVED IN UNCLE'S HAT THU 30 SEP – SAT 16 OCT Written by Finnegan Kruckemeyer adapted from the book by Peter Stamm and Jutta Bauer
This is a play about how walls don’t make a house. And doors don’t make a house. It’s a play about how a family makes a house. And it doesn’t matter where you live – whether it’s an up house or a down house, or an outhouse or a townhouse – who you live with, is the important bit. This delightfully illustrated children’s book is brought to life on stage by tutti frutti and York Theatre Royal. With live music throughout, the merry band of actor-musicians give it an energy and wondrous beauty that will take you to the house with the blue light, round the brim of uncle’s hat and over the moon, all in search of that most magical place – a home. The main target of Gilbert’s satire in Ruddigore is 19th century melodrama. FESTIVAL WEEK AT YORK THEATRE ROYAL A WHILE AGO… York
LAST YEAR… York Theatre
THIS YEAR… TakeOver10
Theatre Royal was generously awarded a funding grant from some important fellows at the Arts Council to encourage more young people to get involved in the arts and theatre.
Royal used the opportunity to organise a fantastic new festival where thousands of young people from across the country participated in seeing some shows and helping to run the theatre for a few weeks, and called it TakeOver… because young people literally took over the theatre!
aspires to be even more exciting and imaginative than ever. Spread over three weeks, the first part of our festival will take place 25 – 30 Oct and then a further two weeks in spring (with lots of activity in between). This year’s festival hopes to bring emerging new talent to the forefront and encourage even greater participation from young people, in a selection box of diverse and exciting activity. The TakeOver team are busy packing the Oct half term week full of performances, workshops and events. Here’s a sneak preview of what’s to come.

Birmingham-born wordsmith Polarbear, follows the successful national tour of If you cover my nose, you can’t see me with a new forward-thinking live literature piece Return. Return tells the story of Noah, a man trying to figure out where he fits. Convinced he had to leave home in order to make his mark, he returns to find a world where a lot of things seem the same but nothing actually is. Combining storytelling with a distinctive lighting and projection design, Return exploits its relationship with cinematic genres. The show journeys through scenes and landscapes, encouraging you to explore and, like a film director, be challenged to re-imagine as the story unfolds...

THU 4 – SAT 27 NOV
You did it to me. Here. You did… You confess. You love the Power. To deviate. To invent, to transgress whatever norms have been established for us. A university professor accused, his female student the accuser. What is the truth? When is fact distorted to fiction? Who is right, who is wrong? Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet's thrilling powerplay of status and sexual politics unfolds into a tension layered mystery in this, one of the outstanding plays of the twentieth century. About David Mamet American playwright David Mamet's plays include the Pulitzer Prize winning Glengarry Glen Ross and Tony Award nominated Speedthe-Plow. Oleanna, premiered in May 1992, is one of his most famous works with parts played by William H. Macy, David Suchet, Aaron Eckhart and Julia Stiles. COMING SOON TUE 23 – SAT 27 NOV
FRI 11 – SAT 26 FEB 2011 Written by Harper Lee Dramatised by Christopher Sergel
York Theatre Royal and The Touring Consortium Theatre Company present Featuring Duncan Preston
Northern Broadsides presents Lancashire. 1913. Match Day!
A gripping staging of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, set in America’s scorching Deep South at a time when racial tensions are at an all time high.
Blackton Rovers is in need of money. Owner, Austin Whitworth, sells his star centre forward – local football hero Jack Metherell – to a rival club on the eve of a crucial match that could see Rovers relegated to the 2nd Division. Will honest Jack do Austin’s bidding when asked to throw the match? Or will he put his professional honour above loyalty to his old club?
A brilliant northern comedy about love, honour, class… and football. By Harold Brighouse (author of Hobson’s Choice)
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view
Atticus, a lawyer, defends a man unfairly accused of rape, risking his family's safety in order to do the right thing in the face of the racism shown by fellow townsfolk. His children make a captivating journey of discovery about their father, their neighbours and the community they live in.
Austin’s daughter Elsie, and Jack, are in love – or so they think. But Jack still lives at home, firmly tied to his mother’s apron strings. Will Elsie’s modern ways and feisty temperament win over his domineering mam? Or is this tryst between the classes doomed from the start?
Directed by Damian Cruden
From the halcyon days of professional football where players were working class heroes and people were supposed to ‘know their place’ comes a spirited comedy that combines broad northern humour with the passion, pride, prejudice and principles of two football families. Directed by Barrie Rutter
