York Theatre Royal and the Touring Consortium Theatre Company present

Written by Christopher Sergel Based on the novel by Harper Lee Directed by Damian Cruden Designed by Liam Doona Lighting designed by Richard G Jones Music composed by Christopher Madin

This most beloved and widely read Pulitzer Prize winner, now in it’s 50th year of publication, tells the extraordinary and unforgettable story of life in the American Deep South through the inquiring eyes of a child. Jem and Scout Finch are growing up during the 1930s depression but their idyllic childhood innocence is shattered with the realisation that bigotry and prejudice rule in their small town of Maycomb, Alabama. When their father Atticus defends a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, the whole family become the target of gossip and abuse. Set in America’s scorching Deep South at a time when racial tensions were at an all time high, the challenging and uncomfortable issues this classic addresses are as relevant today as they were when the book was first written.

Following his critically acclaimed “towering performance” (Yorkshire Post) in The Touring Consortium’s 2007 production of To Kill A Mockingbird, Duncan Preston is recreating his role as lawyer Atticus Finch with York Theatre Royal in a new production of this gripping classic. Duncan is probably best known for his recent appearance in Emmerdale, as well as the hugely popular TV series Dinner Ladies and Surgical Spirit and his starring role in the award winning musical Acorn Antiques with Victoria Wood.

SAT 7 – SAT 28 MAY Salem, Massachusetts, 1692

We open the ensemble season with an opportunity to see one of the most outstanding plays of the Twentieth Century. When a group of girls are discovered dancing naked in the woods late one night rumours of witch-craft and devilworshipping spread through the small community setting off a series of irreversible events.

Jealous John Pro ife Elizabeth of the truth and pursuit of justice ultimately drives this play to its thrilling and tragic conclusion. Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!

This classic text will be brought to life by a cast of 12 professional actors and 8 final year drama students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in their first professional roles. An extensive education programme accompanies the show, please contact education@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or see our website for more detail.

The wry observations of a curious young boy do not stop at the animal kingdom, but also offer a richly comic view of the hilarious encounters of his bohemian family, their friends and the local population. Sometimes it's pretty hard to tell them apart... My family and the animals, that is. I don't know why my brothers and sisters complain so much. With snakes in the bath and scorpions on the lunch table, our house, on the island of Corfu, is a bit like a circus. So they should feel right at home...

York’s community has a long standing reputation for staging Mystery Plays and this production is an exciting stepping stone towards producing the 2012 York Mystery Plays in the Museum Gardens. In the shadow of York Minster labourers from the Painter’s Guild are preparing to perform their Mystery play for the festival of Corpus Christi. To their surprise King Richard II and Queen Anne arrive in the city to escape the political intrigues of the London Court. Suddenly, from the Mayor to the marketplace, the entire community of York explodes in a fever of affectation, expense and hilarious posturing as rival guilds battle it out to impress the royal party with their wagon plays.

From the team that brought you The Railway Children and The Wind in the Willows comes another family summer spectacle. Join Wendy, John and Michael Darling as they re-count their wonderful, actionpacked adventures in Neverland. Stories of Lost Boys, Indians, Mermaids, Crocodiles and Pirates unfold before your eyes in a magical land, free from grown-up rules. The enchanting story of the boy who refuses to grow up is given sparkle and soul in this new adaptation by Mike Kenny (who also adapted The Railway Children and the The Wind in the Willows) and promises to be fun for all the family.

When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies. We are delighted that this production is presented by arrangement with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and Samuel French Ltd. Belt Up Theatre will work alongside the York Theatre Royal team to create an unruly bunch of Pirates and a young cast will feature as loveable Lost Boys.

Regarded as a modern classic from Yorkshire’s cherished playwright, Forty Years On is one of Bennett’s funniest works. It’s the last day of school term. The Headmaster will do his best to keep the show on track, and keep it clean, as he contests against unruly pupils and disruptive staff…not to mention the rugby team. ‘Bennett’s most gloriously funny play…a brilliant, youthful perception of a nation in decline, as seen through the eyes of a home-grown school play…a classic’ Daily Mail Actors from Belt Up Theatre will join the ensemble company to add to the raucous group of sixth form school boys.

What if the things you believe in as a kid are really true? When I Was Ten I Could Fly is a funny and insightful journey through everything from Action Man and Séances to Debbie Harry and the Hubble Space Telescope. Using comedy, confessions and a bit of acting, YTR regular Eamonn Fleming (Two, The Dumb Waiter) and co-writer/Director Andy Burden (Tobacco Factory) bring you an hour of rambling insight and pertinent nonsense.

Harold Pinter has been described as the most influential, provocative and poetic dramatist of his generation.

Written by Tom Needham

Based on the book by Laurence Sterne, A Sentimental Journey is a digital opera in development. It is scored for a mixed ensemble of 4 musicians, 4 laptops, and an actor/singer. It will feature the improvising duo ev2 - Craig Vear (Railway Children, White Crow) and Jonathan Eato (York University Music Dept), cellist Audrey Riley (Icebreaker, Gavin Bryars, Foo-Fighters), and special guests.

Is a monster born or made? Where does our responsibility lie?

An extraordinary tale of friendship, loyalty and the power of dreams.

Based on Shelley's classic, this gripping adaptation explores the extraordinary attachment between Dr Frankenstein and his Creation – a bond, they both grow to realise, that only death can break.

George and Lennie are drifters who have only each other and their shared search for the American Dream. George is the little guy who looks out for Lennie who, unaware of his own strength, seems unable to keep out of trouble. Finding work on a ranch, they plan to stay long enough to buy a place of their own… but their arrival triggers a chain of events that threatens the dream that unites them.

CALL MR ROBESON

THE BOY JAMES & ATRIUM

SAT 11 JUN

TUE 21 - SAT 25 JUN

Paul Robeson is a great and famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner.

Following total sell out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, York Theatre Royal company in residence, Belt Up Theatre bring two new interactive plays to home ground.

When over the years he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment's liking, he is branded a traitor to his country and denied opportunities to perform or travel.

The Boy James by Alexander Wright tells a story of playful innocence and cruel experience inspired by the life of J.M. Barrie. Atrium by James Wilkes (The Tartuffe) stages the deluded fantasies of an ageing artist fragmented across a jigsaw narrative. ‘I saw the future of theatre... and its name was Belt Up’ York Press

The play is a roller coaster journey through Robeson's remarkable and eventful life and features some of his famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol' Man River.

WED 14 – SAT 17 SEP Written by Hannah Davies Chloe is 17, single and lives with her aunty and new baby. Struggling to cope with her new life and facing an uncertain future, she tries to find solace and answers by delving back into her troubled past. A dark, touching and poignant new play from a York based writer, of a young girl going backwards in the need to go forwards.

WED 12 – SAT 15 OCT All in the words of Christopher Marlowe (but not necessarily in the right order) Some of the most popular dramatic verse ever written and some splendid comedy to go with it.
