Background

Chinese students, who are known as the best at taking exams, have almost only lived for one goal in their first eighteen years of campus life - the college entrance examination. As the most important mechanism for selecting talents in China, competition in the college entrance examination is extremely fierce. In 2022, there will be 11.93 million people registering for the college entrance examination in my country, but on average only 39.86% of them will be admitted to college, and 6% will be admitted to better universities. Chinese graduates face severe academic discrimination when seeking employment, which means they must study hard in school to succeed in the college entrance examination. Based on this, Chinese candidates are shrouded in anxiety about entering higher schools, and a number of Super High Schools have been born as a result, dedicated to training students into test machines that produce scores.

Locked window

A certain school sealed the balcony of the teaching building with iron bars to prevent students from jumping off the building

Hasty sleep In one of the most famous Super High School, Hengshui High School, many students go to bed at night without taking off their clothes to save time.

In order to know people’s feeling at school, I searched for people’s feeling keywords related to school online. The most frequently referred keywords are illustrated following.

Based on the online feedback, I conducted a 150-students survey ranging from 15-20 years old students and interviewed 4 of them. The results show students’ views about their school period and the college entrance exam as well as the reasons behind those.

My school time is very fulfilling, although I am busy every day, I like this kind of feeling. Although there are many criticism voices, I think the college entrance examination is necessary, it is the fairest way at present.

<Stick it to the stickman>

Many high schools put iron bars around the Windows to prevent students from jumping off the building. I suddenly felt that the school was like a prison, where the students were trapped in cages doing problems mechanically. I was inspired by this incident and wanted to use it as an opportunity to reflect on a certain theme.

This is a simulation game that really comform to reality in China, in which the child played by the player always completes a life exam under the pressure and expectation of his parents. This topic made me hope to express some topics that reflect the reality, and finally I focused on the campus in China.

It's a JRPG game with fantastic UI desgin, which express a rebellious, ironic and entertaining sense. These are also characteristics that I hope this project will have. Based on these, I decided to express the theme through a game and I refer to this game for UI design and music about my project.

This is an action game that expresses employees' dissatisfaction with the company. I think fighting games are more about anger, stress relief, and fun, so I adopted that model for the gameplay.

Design concept Eventually I plan to make an action game with a campus theme. In this game, Crazy Blue is a senior high school student who needs to beat everyone in the exam in order to get the chance to enter the school. At the same time, he also wants to severely destroy the school and kill everyone to vent his anger to express his dissatisfaction with the system. In the game, players need to control Crazy Blue to defeat all the enemies while ensuring that they will not be defeated by the anxiety of others. In this game, I designed corresponding characters to reflect the classmates and teachers I often meet at school. The whole game is divided into three levels, the player needs to challenge the classmates, teachers and the headmaster respectively, which symbolizes fighting against the education system. I made the first level into a game demo, and the rest of the level in the form of drawings. I hope that through this project, students can release pressure and reflect on our education system in a humorous and entertaining way.

Scene& level design

Storyboard The students of a certain Super High School are in a state of deep anxiety as the exam is approaching. Tired of school life and the pressure of exams, Crazy Blue, a senior high school student, finally decided to fight back against the distorted system, and in the process made sure his Anxiety Capacity (AC Value) wouldn't be filled up by others.

Top Floor Auditorium is located at the top floor with the headmaster having a lecture at the stage. 5 teachers will be dropped off from the upper floor to the ground.

Character design AC Value: 10

AC Value: 2

The character the player controls, who is the awakened one throughout the school.

The average students who feel anxious about study, with lower AC Value and aggression.

Headmaster

AC Value: 10

1. Wake up and get out!

2. Fight against the students

3. Anxiety boom! Mad Learner

Crazy Blue arrives in the classroom and decides to break the shackles...

After class, students poured out, and Crazy Blue received his first wave of attacks.

Unfortunately you meet Mad learner, who will impose the most severe punishment on anyone who interrupts his learning. Feel the explosion of his anxiety!

Second Floor Teacher Offices are located at the second floor, with 3 teachers set at each office and many students around them.

Teacher

First Floor Classrooms are located at the first floor, with 2 Mad Learners and 3 Free Riders set at the corners of the classrooms.

4. Get healing from Free Rider

5. Sleepy indoctrination...

6. Duelling in auditorium!

Congratulations on meeting the Freerider who has Anxiety Healing ability( AH Value). Stay with him to heal your anxiety.

You get to the office on the second floor and decide to challenge the teacher, but the teacher's endless talking makes you fall asleep...

Finally, you're in the attic auditorium. You're about to face off against the headmaster on stage, who only cares about grades...

Self-doubt

The best pick-up artist of the school who reagards students with low scores as worthless person. With a strong anxiety value and attack power, after listenging to his lecture the player will doubt themselves and move slowly.

AC Value: 5

Sleepy Talking

Always pushing students hard to study and are keen on instilling their education concept to students. Listening to them makes students want to sleep. When the player come close to them the player will fall asleep.

AH Value: 3

Anxiey Healing

Students who can maintain a good mood even if they score zero in the exam, enabling people to feel relaxed when people are around them. When the player come close to them, the player can heal their anxiety value.

Mad Learner

Free Rider

AC Value: 3

Anxiety Boom

The hardest working people who are always anxious that they are not learning enough and go mad at anything that interferes with their studies. The player approaching them receives explosive damage.

Game development Frame work and Modeling

UI desgin

Implement to Unity

Coding

I used Procreate to make a framework draft including the storyboard and the game flow, as well as the scene desgin and character desgin. Rhino was used to make the character models while character models were made in Blender.

I first identified the key words of the overall art style as follows: color contrast; revolt; strong impact, etc. Then go online to reference the corresponding art style of color and form. I sketched the design in procreate and finished the game UI in Illustrator.

I put the model asset into Unity to make adjustments, set up the lighting of the scene, and determined the final render. Then searched for characters’ animations online and put them in Unity. Finally placed the UI in place.

I used Unity 3D and C# to develop my game design. I studied some basic programming patterns and AI logics to program the enemies. After that I made a Flow Conrtol framework and wrote coding part. I also utilized the built-in Post-processing system to enhance the visual effects and used the Animator Controller to implement my charactor animations.

Three players said that the staggered floor where mad learner is located in the first level is not convenient to operate. This staggered floor was originally designed to enrich the spatial experience, but I removed it in the final version to make it easier to view the game.

Enemy adjustment Two players said the game was too difficult, and watching them play I found that they often lost too much blood and died when Mad learner exploded. Therefore, I reduced the damage of mad learner explosions and removed one Mad Learner to increase the game experience.

CONCLUSION Based on the above explanation, I gradually realized that human beings are

inherently sinful, even if we realize that it is wrong. So I became numb, and instead of thinking painfully about these things, I would rather enjoy myself in the moment, because thinking is meaningless. Under this concept, I often feel that I live like an animal, only following primitive desires. I was scared that I had this kind of thought but didn’t know how to solve it, so I came up with this project to encourage people to reflect.

The captivating installation, "The Pork Paradox," delves into the irony of cynicism in a dystopian society, reflecting on modern human experiences. The project combines a gripping short film and a thoughtfully crafted set, inviting users to review moral boundaries and inner struggles.

The film portrays a grotesque world of cannibalistic pig-headed people, with a cynical protagonist succumbing to primal desires. The narrative depicts the flaws of human nature and serves as a metaphor for the blurred moral standards in contemporary society.
