TUMAZ page 6 Parametric Jewelry Design-Necklace I launched a series of Jewelry Design called 《Jewels of Taiwan》, which is inspired from Taiwan Endemic Species Animals. "TUMAZ" applied parametric tools to generate nontraditional forms to demonstrate the features of digital design tools.

Detachable tail with extra battery to extend the mouse stamina for work. Megnetic charging design of detachable tail allows users quickly shift to gaming mode.
Digital Aesthetics page 52 Study on Forms-Generative System Design This project talks about the form trends of Digital Era we live. Especially in Comsumer Electronics products , Minimalism is the mainstream of form language. I studied the logic behind the style, and constructed a generative system of Minimalism forms. With help of parametric design tools, designer can quickly generate serveral options by different combinations of parameters.
MAXXIS Tire Cooperative Project page 64 Industry-University Cooperative Project-Design Research There are three stages in this project. Stage One started from Inside Training, Background Research, Street Interview, Data Analysis. TUMAZ 《Jewels of Taiwan》is a series of jewelry design projects that focus on the application on parametric tools.《TUMAZ》is one project of the series. This project applied parametric design to explore new forms that follow the logic of algorithms in Industrial Design.

Research Parametric Design tools are popular with avant-guard Architechture Design recently. Algorithmic Aided Design is the trend that generates forms with coding logic in parametric design. To study the design trend, this project use parametric tools in Industrial Design. Highly Customization of jewelry design corresponds with the feature of parametric design. Therefore,《Jewels of Taiwan》is the study application on parametric design trend by conceptual jewelry design in Industrial Design.
Architech Zaha Hadid applied parametric design tools to design Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre. With the avant-guard look, it becomes the typical comtemporary style.

A complex from genetated by Grasshopper, algorithmic aided design tool, is defined by the relations among design elements. Changing the combinations of parameters, desingers can generate complex forms under given conditions.
The project tries to apply parametric design tools on Industrial Design, and study new forms through non-traditional thinking to demonstrate new style of Digital Era.
Tra d i t i o n a l m a n u a l d e s i g n m e t h o d s a re h a rd to generate complex forms like this. Because of its inner relations among design elements, the visual look of complex forms imply the logic of rationality.

Concept 《 J e w e l s o f Ta i w a n 》 i s a s e r i e s o f j e w e l r y d e s i g n inspired from Taiwan endmic species animals. This project 《TUMAZ》comes from the concept of "Formosan Black Bear", which features its moon shape white hair on the chest. As a correspondence to a necklace on human body, the jewerly selected necklace to develop from this concept.

The intention of jewelry design is to bring out the beauty of human body. As an accessory, I think jewelry is the extension of human body contours. Therefore, the series of《Jewels of Taiwan》use human body to design the jewelry.

The proportion of human face, a eye vertically divides a face into five sections, and a nose horizontally divides a face into three sections.

Based on the division of human face, I used regulating lines to defined the appropriate area of the necklace. The green shape describes the contour of necklace.

Display I selected high amplitude and holes as final. This combination express the outline of defined shape and the skeleton structure lightened the design. Besides, the casting shadows through the holes attract the eyes as well.

TUMAZ Interpreting famous Formosan Black Bear's moon shape white hair area on its chest to show the contemporary style of Digital Era. Following the contour of the necklace as a visual guide, its extension brings the eyes to focus on the beauty of human body.

Additionally, this project demonstrates how parametric design tools can help designers to solve complex problems.

Research Algorithmic aided design can solve many complex problems. Not only complex forms but also the abstract logic of organization elements, the computational thinking of algorithmic aided design helps designers to decompose systematic problems into small ones, and solve them step by step.
The organization of jewelry design is a systematic problem including stone selection, cutting shape, jewelry types, setting craft, and metal selection.

Concept With the same topic of 《TUMAZ》, this project inspired from Formosan Blue Magpie. The image of flying Blue Magpie is just like the earring swinging beneth ears. Therefore, the concept converts the image of flying magpie into jewelry design.

Quick sketched down flying image of Blue Magpies, I extracted the characteristic lines and mapped the earring proportion with human ears to determine the appropriate area.

Development The features of Blue Magpies are blue feathers and the geometric order while spreading wings. The arrangement of feathers show the beauty of natural orders. Based on sketches, I divided the flying image into three sections, which are Wings, Hips and Tail.

Parametrizing the basic curves with Grasshopper to grow the metal frames and select parameters settings of stones, I decomposed the whole design section by section, and dealed with stones setting indepently.

By constructing algorithmic logic system of stones setting, designers can parametrize the concept of evaluating stones setting. Designers can evaluate the combinations of stones setting and cutting in real time through the screen.

Generated by the system, the metal frames match the image of flying Blue Magpies. Wings section express the spreading move, and Hips sections consist of two different thinkness frames for feather layers. The Tail are designed with chains to show the swinging.

Gems setting is to biring out the color characteristics of "Red Beak and Blue Feathers". I selected Sapphire, Ruby, Black Gem, and Dimond as whole color presentation. And then I determined the cutting by Blue Magpies body features.

Display Converting the Image of flying Blue Magpies to the jewelry beneth ears, the earrings show the geometric order of Blue Magpies' feathers and feature of their color. Swung with human body, the earrings are like Blue Magpies flying.

Research "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, CTS" is physiological injury for long time mouse using. Wrists suspension result in musle tension, and cause CTS to harm users' health.

Most of long time mouse users are office workers. They rely on computers for jobs, using mouse 6-8 hours a day. Plus the time of gaming, they may use mouses more than 10 hours a day.

Concept Design concept is inspired by space shuttles which shuttle between the Earth and outer space. As a metaphor that users shutte between work and games.
A space shuttle has two modes. One is attached with a pair of solid rocket boosters. And the other detachs the boosters after orbit insertion.

Devolopment Using clay model to verify the ergonomics of concepts, and evaluating different designs in physical forms.
Some clay models interpreted from space shuttles were tested for the hand comfort while holding the form.

Digital Aesthetics This Project is the study on forms in Minimalism. By reviewing the style trend of comtemporary product design, I concluded that the forms of the design is controlling the orders of "control points" in NURBS system. Constructing a generative system, I managed to show the Aesthetics of the Digital Era we live.

About Rounding One of the characteristics of Minimalism is "rounding". The rounding shows the continuity between the form surfaces. As the illustration showing below, surface continuity level starts form "G0" to "G4" and more. Designers can examine the continuity by "curvature comb", the lines on the form, to evaluate the form while modeling.

NURBS System NURBS system is the standard of Industrial Design Modeling with computer. NURBS geometry includes control point, curve and surface. The order of control points dominants the continuiy of surfaces. Therefore, the keypoint to make good quility form is to control the "order" of the control points.

Digital Aesthetics "Digital Aesthetics" is the study on the form of Minimalism with digital aspect. I use parametric design tools, such as "Grasshopper", to explore the forms. Instead of controlling the form manually, parametric tools allow designers to control forms with algorithms and mathemetical fomulas, which means designers can manupulate forms abstractly.

The basic geometric shapes, such as triangle, rectangle, circle, etc, are the examples of curves in good orders. Control points are distributed to the curves in some orders defined by parametric tools. Therefore, they can describe the shape of Minimalism forms.

Dealer Call We consulted some dealers of Taiwan to understand the customers' perference, and talked with the customers while their tires changing or car maintenance. Collecting feedbacks of dealers and customers, we optimized our questionaire and interview skills.

Street Interviews We executed our street interviews at automoblie stores, tire dealers, and Taxi station in Taipei, Taichung and Kaoshsiung. 142 valid questionaires are collected for further analysis quantitatively and qualitatively.
Data Analysis Collected data are presented in statstic graphics to understand the informations behind the significant figures. We could relize the relations among users' behaviors and scheme for following actions accordingly.

Stage One Conclusion At Stage One, we learnt about the knowledge of tire industry and market. Besides, we understand the users and the dealers through questionaires, interviews and stores visit. Based on these experiences, we concluded that what consumers care about and the values of tire services. Finally, we defined five Users Types for Stage Two.
Potential Values Car Maintanance is inevitable, but the stores can add values for waiting. Cross-industry alliance for other services , providing vouchers of shops nearby and store localization are proposals we suggested.

Stage Two The purpose of Stage Two is to define Design Specifications for Stage Three. First, we did the In-depth Interviews of five Uers Types. Second, we held the workshop with MAXXIS team to describe User Profiles and Value Proposition. At the end of workshop, Ideal Users Scenarios are presented by each group. In-Depth Interviews We managed to explore the roles of respondents want to be by In-depth Intervirews. Behaviors of respodents are motivated by their inner drive. By understanding the core thinking, social value, and behavior patterns, we could refer the roles they want to be. Therefore, we could find out the standards of users' decision making in all kinds of situations.

Question Modulization In-depth Interviews are customized for each respondent by questions modulization. Five modules are design based on Users Types of previous research. We changed the combinations o f i n te r v i e w co n te n t s b y re s p o n d e n t s a n d added other questions based on the respondent background.

Kid Family
Interview Props Interview props are illustration cards and designed flyers to stimulate the respondents for more informations to share. The cards are design based on the question, choosed by the repondents to represent what they thouhgt. Furthermore, we focused on "Why" they choosed them for the motivations behind, and as the commnication media.

Workshop After finishing In-depth Interviews, we held the workshop with MAXXIS team. We were divided into four groups by different topics. During three days of campaigns, we discussed and organized the materials and data from Stage One and In-depth Interviews. Defining the Value Propositions and Ideal Users Scenarios, we consolidated Design Specifications for Stage Three.
Questions Modulization In-depth Interviews audio record contents were typed into sentences describing lifestyles of respondents. We sorted the sentences by five Users Types and distributed to each group as workshop materials.
User Feedback Browsing the users' statements of their lives to generalize and simplify the materials contents, we extracted the core concepts from several users' senstences.
Voice of Customers Screening and analizing the statements for Users' needs, we preserved the keywords and tone of the sentences. We condensed the sentences into lists of descriptions.

Value Proposition We organized voice of customers and defined the User Profile to form the representative user's aspiration. Potential market segments are discovered by clarifying users' needs.

Ideal User Scenario Each group presented their Ideal User Scenarios in sotrytelling to express sensational feeling of users. Instead of quantitative figures and graphics, storytelling spread more inspirations, aspiration, and emotions of markets. Presentation forms are not confined to sliders on screen. Acting, role playing, vedios, and storyboards are acceptable to express the role that users want to be.

Design Specification Each group defined their User Profile and Ideal User Scenario from the workshop. We finalized the Design Specification by consolidating and reorganizing the conclusions of each group. There are four topics of Design Specification. Each of the topics would deliver to Stage Three for innovative product design.

Stage Three Stage Three was assigned to design team liaised with research team. There are six innovative concept projects in Stage Three. Based on the materials and research of previous Stages, the members of Stage Three followed the Design Specification and developed their concept products considering MAXXIS tires.
