LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

“April is the cruelest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.” In 1922, T.S. Eliot wrote his signature poem “The Waste Land” as a desolate landscape dictated by the imperative of relentless positivism and Modernist “progress.” For me, and for many New Yorkers, April is the tenderest month because it is full of yet-to-be-realized promises. Then May is here. Budding greens dripping with fresh dew preview the precious months ahead when New Yorkers relish outdoor cafés and Central Park runs. It makes me want to put on my Argentinean tango shoes. With recent movies such as W.E. and The Artist bringing back nostalgia for the 1920s style, we take you to the world of Great Gatsbyinspired women’s fashion. Spring is about possibilities; our men’s fashion section offers you a wide spectrum of options to update your looks. To unleash your inner energy, we highlight the sport watches for men, with most styles fresh from the 2012 Baselworld watch and jewelry fair. For ladies, please look out for our Spring garden-themed jewelry and watches that would brighten a Mother’s Day. We also offer a piece of advice on the most thoughtful graduation gifts for your young family members or friends.

APRIL IS THE TENDEREST MONTH

When I was an M&A banker with a bulge-bracket investment bank, the cafeteria staff usually gave me a disproportionately generous lunch serving after they spotted my maiden name Liu on my ID card. I gained quite a few pounds because, in their eyes, I was somehow related to Lucy Liu. Gracing the cover of YUE’s Spring 2012 issue, Lucy is known as the fi rst Chinese American actress to take on breakthrough roles in mainstream American TVs and movies. Her roles have departed from Hollywood’s stereotypical casting of Asian girls that were either the innocent and submissive “pushovers” or the tough and seductive “dragon ladies.” In Ally McBeal, Lucy was the feisty and somewhat malicious lawyer Ling Woo. In Charlie’s Angels, she was a vibrant leading lady. Lucy shared with YUE on what it means to be a Chinese American in Hollywood and how her Chinese upbringing shaped her career and views towards life. As China is experiencing what I call a “collecting fever” and private museums and art sponsorship are the latest “games du jour,” our readers might find it inspiring to learn how great collectors went about collecting classical Chinese art and antiques. In her first ever interview, Dame Jill Sackler shared with us how her late husband Arthur M. Sackler—great psychiatrist, entrepreneur and philanthropist—and she endowed galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Princeton University, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Beijing University in Beijing, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C., and the Jillian & Arthur M. Sackler Wing at the Royal Academy. On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Dame Sackler is a beautiful example of someone carrying on an extraordinary legacy. After “meeting” New York’s cultural and artistic elite and fi lling your minds with their inspiring experiences as New Yorkers, you deserve a great food fest. Whether at a Michelin three-star restaurant or at a burger joint, I hope you can experience New York in your own special way through YUE. The Chinese writer/scholar Lin Huiyin (1904-1955) put it well: “YOU are the April of this human world.”

In celebration of the International Women’s Day, at the invitation of Madame Wang Min (wife of Chinese Ambassador Sun Guoxiang), on March 7 YUE Publisher Chiu-Ti Jansen gave a presentation on Fashion and Diplomacy to approximately 100 Chinese diplomats, spouses and family members at the Chinese Consulate General in New York City. From Duchess of Winsor, Jackie O, Michele Obama to Carla Bruni Sarkozy, Chiu-Ti used a slide show to illustrate how these style icons worked fashion to accomplish delicate diplomatic missions. Chiu-Ti also shared her own style tips, with the audience, to which the guests responded with feedback regarding their own experiences of representing China in diplomatic functions. The highlight of the event was a mini-fashion show where grouped guests walked the runway in their favorite daywears, business suits, party outfits and statement looks.

UCY LIU HAS MORE GOING FOR HER THAN

her good looks. Since being nominated for an Emmy and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her work on Ally McBeal, she has starred in blockbusters Charlie’s Angels, Kung Fu Panda and in indie hits such as Detachment and Trouble with Bliss. The actress has been increasingly busy during the past year. Her latest indie fl ick, The Man with the Iron Fist, co-starring Russell Crowe, comes out in October. Liu also took a role on the TNT television series, Southland. as Officer Jessica Tang. In 2010, Liu acted in the successful run of Broadway’s God of Carnage. And did we mention that she is a UNICEF Ambassador? On a Friday evening in March, we met with Lucy Liu at Petite Abeille, a small cozy Belgian bistro in Flatiron. We spotted her across a crowded room where she sat, enjoying a bowl of butternut squash soup and hot tea. She was dressed modestly in a black sweater and jeans. Her long black hair, almond-shaped eyes and high cheekbones cast quite a graceful impression. “Hi, I’m Lucy,” she said, extending her hand to us. The truth is that Lucy Liu is alluring, with a mix of vulnerability and strength. Liu is unusually secluded and elegant for someone who works in Hollywood. She was born in New York City, growing up in Jackson Heights, Queens. She is of Chinese American descent, her mother originally from Beijing and her father from Shanghai. Her family spoke Mandarin at home and she did not learn English until the age of five. She was stressed during her high school years by the pressure and intensity of her Chinese American parents. “I think that my whole life was a series of exams - to go from there to then to see where you fall into the line of the high schools. And then from high school to see where you would fall into the line of colleges.” She said that when she was a sixteen year old student at Stuyvesant High School, she was a mini-adult because of her self-taught independence. Her typical day involved getting herself to school, preparing dinner for herself and making sure everything was in order, because everyone in her family worked. “When you come home, it’s like you’re living two different lives. So you’ve got two different personalities. So you struggle with yourself, and you don’t know which one to really hold on to. You don’t know when to press the button and let the green button to go.” Even then, Liu was the kind of young girl whose willpower came from somewhere deep inside of her.

Before her celebrity and success, Liu attended NYU, eventually transferring and graduating from the University of Michigan. It was during college that Lucy Liu embraced who she was; instead of stepping back, she began to immerse herself in her own Chinese culture. “I realized for the first time that I had a free choice and I chose to understand a little bit more about myself. That was the first time that I felt alive, that I was able to say I’m really proud of who I am.” Liu’s newfound desire to learn, to discover and to explore Chinese culture was the first time that she could really appreciate and understand her family heritage. She decided that she wanted to be an actress after college. The fi rst part of her career was rocky because she didn’t know the business of acting. It didn’t help that Liu’s parents were not understanding of her career choice. It was hard for them to acknowledge her decision because of their fear and uneasiness about the world of being an actress. During this time, Liu auditioned for roles while working in part time jobs as a caterer, a hostess, a secretary and even a peddler of T-shirts on Greene Street. “The idea that I didn’t know anything or anyone in the business was really helpful because I just sort of went. Somebody was just pulling me with a string and I was just going, and I didn’t have any fear about it. When you don’t know, anything is possible. As Liu continued to eat her soup, we inquired about her early days growing up as a Chinese American which she thinks was both a blessing and a curse. She didn’t have all the opportunities that others may have had because of her background and physical attributes that limited her career path as an actress. But to Liu, there are always ways to break the boundaries. “When you’re restrained is when you really feel like you want to break out. And I think in some ways that allows you to go outside of yourself.” Liu’s career path has been all about breaking the rules. “And if I didn’t do that, if I followed what everyone else or what other people thought that I should be doing, I would still be pulling a rickshaw.”

Lucy Liu: Seventy Two Book Launch

What is so impressive about Liu’s performances is that she depicts everything that she is not. Liu’s first big break was landing the part of the ill-tempered and vicious lawyer Ling Woo on Ally McBeal. With this success, the media began to label Liu as a “pioneer,” taking on a role that was basically written for a Caucasian or “American” person. “For me the point is where am I going in terms of how far I’m pushing myself and how much I’m allowing myself to do, because most people would just say - let’s just keep doing physical stuff or let’s just keep doing action films. And you can do that, but then that’s all people want to do. I think it’s important to say no, and let’s do something like this even if no one sees it. You’ve got to feed yourself.” Her foray into Broadway, in God of Carnage, united Liu with the talented Matthew Warchus and Oscar nominated Janet McTeer. “I really love comedy more than I love anything else. It's the most fun and very difficult. You have to have the right timing and all the synapses have to go off at once.” In the independent films Detachment and Trouble with Bliss, Liu showed a great deal of humanity. In Trouble with Bliss, her character was very fragile and narrow-minded about what she wanted. In Detachment, she played an over-sexed and off-kilter guidance counselor in the public school system. The spirited Liu is also a multiasker with a mix of eclectic hobbies. She has a passion for the arts and is an accomplished visual artist in collage, painting and photography. “The idea that I can explore and try different things helps me to continue being creative. You continually have things that you’re thinking about and you want to channel and keep the flow going. And so to me, I like being able to have that always with me. And whether I’m in the trailer or when I’m not working on a show or on a film, it makes me feel complete.” spring 2012 | 27

Lucy Liu in Trouble with Bliss

Artwork from Lucy’s upcoming art show.

what makes lucy tick? New York City: “There’s a creative tension that’s always happening in the city, and in New York in general.” Living Life: “I think that for me to say go with your feeling or go withyour dreams is kind of a copout because that’s not reality. The reality isthat there’s a struggle between who you are and who your parents are, your family structure and culture. Whatever your experiencing now is real and don’t deny that, but also know that your truth right now is going to change. And it’s okay to change your mind.” The Business of Acting: “I just knew I wanted to act. I didn’t know about the business of acting. I knew that it was a business because everything is a business.” Lucy Liu as a high school counselor in Detachment

The waiter brings Liu more water for her tea – and lights the candle on the table. Her eyes shine with enthusiasm through the candlelight as she talks about walking her dog around Central Park, and along the way picking up objects that have been dropped or discarded on the street. Liu finds these “treasures” fascinating and has been collecting them for a number of years and hints to us that it will be the subject of her upcoming art show. Liu has thrown her full weight behind UNICEF, an organization for which she works as an ambassador. She takes her charity work as seriously as she does her work in the film industry. She works to build a better environment for children and has traveled to Africa to build a water pump for clean, fresh, sanitized water. After our interview on Friday evening, Liu was off to Haiti on Sunday. Her career and hectic schedule leave very little time for love, but Liu says that she prefers to keep that side of her life uncluttered. Having a relationship while always living out of a suitcase and never knowing where you will be is not easy. “I don’t think I’ve RSVP’d to a wedding in 20 years, because I never know where I’m going to be. I love the idea of sort of settling down in a way, but it’s not really part of our business – unless you decide to do one thing and one thing only. I like the spontaneity.” When she spoke, Liu warmed the room with her sunny demeanor and engaged us with stories of her Chinese American upbringing, her current projects, her personal life and challenges. In the end, we felt empowered by this petite woman with the name of Lucy Liu. “Whatever limitations that you feel are out there, it’s your duty to walk in that direction. Don’t ever give up on yourself, whatever it is. And whenever you find that there’s a deterrent that means you’re on the right path. If it’s that easy then something’s not completely right.” n

Growing up Asian American: “I think that there’s a divide about how you have this very innate feeling of being filial and then there’s the other feeling of trying to break out and be a part of society.” Television: “When you do television, people get to watch you in their homes and you become friends with that person. You see them every week. You get to really know the character. There’s an intimacy involved and that’s the real value to me. I think that’s a very special quality that television brings.” Martial Arts: “I did it as a hobby, but I’ve been trying to get away from the notion that if you are Asian then you obviously know martial arts.” The MoMA: “I love the MoMA because they always have amazing exhibits. I was so blown away by the fact they had a Matisse exhibit!” The Metropolitan Museum of Art: “The Met had an amazing Francis Bacon show, it was really exquisite. But I also like to go in their African and Asian section because there are things that have been there for a really, really long time. I get inspiration from that. “ Brooklyn: Brooklyn has an incredible vibe. I haven’t spent a lot of time there, but I think it’s very cool. It’s a great place to live, to have an art scene and an affordable life, essentially.” Los Angeles: “I love being out there, it’s so beautiful. It’s sunny mostlyall the time. And there is so much space!” Traveling: “When you have those rare moments when you take a day or two just to explore the area, its so mesmerizing. And it makes the trip so much more wonderful when you have that time.” China: “I think that China has been the sleeping dragon. It’s an incredibly industrious country, and they’re always striving for more. I know that’s how my family is. They don’t really sit around waiting for a paycheck to happen without going and killing it. I think it’s really important to acknowledge that they have an incredible population of people, and they have a desire. They have a desire to grow and to learn and to be – I think there’s a driving force behind the business and the growth of China and it’s not just the government.”

and welcome the warm weather with the season’s sweet pastel hues and metallics. We bid ode to this season’s abundance of 1920s influenced designs commemorating the chic and elegance of the Jazz Age. The 1920s was called “The Roaring ’20s” because it was such an exciting time of cultural, industrial and political growth. The confident and newly independent woman, along with the optimism of the 1920s served as inspiration for this season. The 1920s trend is influenced by Hollywood films and television shows such as Downton Abbey, Boardwalk Empire, The Artist, and the Baz Luhrman’s remake of The Great Gatsby. Imagine occupying your days in glamorous, yet subtle and subdued drop-waisted dresses then after dark, twirling the night away in extravagant and glitzy sequined flapper dresses that dazzle to the sounds of the Charleston. Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Tory Burch, and Marchesa all showed a hint of the 20s with their own refined and modern updates for Spring 2012. On the runways were light sequined biased cut gowns, drop waists, light boudoir silks, and lots of fringed dresses. Ralph Lauren’s spring collection featured dropped waists, silk wallpaper floral tea dresses, Art Deco beaded flapper dresses and cloche embracing the luxury of the roaring twenties. spring 2012 | 49

Marc Jacobs encompassed the 1920s Jazz age with boxy drop-waist flapper dresses of the 1920s. The collection featured fringe, sequins, and shreds of clear plastic on the dresses. Gucci referenced the 1920s Jazz Age with dropped-waists and bold art deco motifs in black, white, and bronze colors. Tory Burch was inspired by the treschic 20s in the French seaside of Deauville featuring elegant shapes in sailor stripes and dots. Marchesa’s flapper fringe with swingy beads harkened back to the days of Daisy Buchanan dancing the night away. ■

BY BE N J A M I N - E M I L E L E H AY

TWICE A YEAR , IN FASHION CAPITALS MILAN, PARIS , NEW YORK—AND NOW LONDON—

menswear designers and labels present their varied luxury creations to a throng of persnickety editors, stylists and buyers. For Spring 2012, the excitement began last June in Florence, (it is safe to say) at Pitti Immagine Uomo, which has grown immensely in both popularity and in the quality of collections presented. It was there that the men’s sartorial trends were set in motion… Most notably a wave of poppy florals and stripes in addition to seasonally appropriate fabrics such as linen and piqué cotton and bursts of colors. By the time the shows in Milan and Paris had walked, we knew exactly what to expect come September in New York. While I never condone putting couture in storage for trends’ sake— I fi nd the ways that designers influence how men dress today, inspiring. From azure to federal, the blue suit is back! One need not look further than the sophisticated collections of Z Zegna (creative director Alessandro Sartori’s last), Adam Kimmel, Paul Smith, Canali and Simon Spurr. While you’re at it, better make that a double-breasted suit in summer wool or cashmere. Originally all the rage during the 1930s and World War II era— the double-breasted suit is both form-fitting and refi ned. We have the likes of Miuccia Prada and Giorgio Armani for this style’s return. Whispers that shorts were back, following the collections of Raf Simons at Jil Sander, Michael Bastian and Kim Jones for Louis Vuitton made me chuckle! When did shorts ever go out of style? Especially during the balmy summers we’ve experienced globally this past year. Although—the cargo pant is creeping back onto the scene after a welcomed hiatus… Z ZEGNA

“THE KEY IS TO IDENTIFY PIECES THAT COMMUNICATE YOUR LIFESTYLE AND PERSONALITY, YET CONSISTENTLY ADVANCE YOUR LOOK.”

But no matter what the trend, there was a handful of labels that pushed the envelope: Kris van Assche’s collection for Dior Homme incorporated such clean-lined ingenuity. Burberry and Christopher Bailey nailed tribal chic with their ikat and raffia designs and techno materials. Call me biased, but I love Ann Demeulemeester’s desert vagabond: it was downtown, yet luxurious and had covetable separates. That brings us fi nally to Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. Those white, surfer tops, skirts and pants adorned with colorful Heliconia (bird-of-paradise flowers) had a tropical romanticism that was uncharacteristically optimistic for the designer. It worked magically. These brands continue to lead the pack, in my mind, in terms of the evolution of men’s fashion. While I’ll reserve the slow progression into color blocking, ombré knitwear, and shorts for summer. My favorite spring 2012 trends have to be those cool coppers and pure white tones; the smart double-breasted blazer’s return; and the wild stripes on cardigans and pants (you’ll see that quickly morph to plaids down the road). Givenchy wasn’t the only luxury label to send out models in all-white, sporty attire. Calvin Klein Collection’s Italo Zucchelli went down an active wear route, presenting urban A-tanks paired with athletic pants, in various techno fabrics (he had muscular models to match.) It was a contemporary and minimalist style that matched the Calvin Klein DNA. John Varvatos’ look is all about rock ‘n’ roll. So it came as no surprise that he channeled ‘70s arena rockers for his Milan show, of which boasted white suiting, gilets, jackets and pants. In Paris, Dior Homme’s urbane cowboy was tailored to a slender T—all in ashen snow: from tie to skinny-lapel jacket and cape-coat. Last, but surely not least, were the stripes that graced the men’s spring/summer 2012 runways. From Issey Miyake’s blue costumes rayés to Burberry’s ikat and asymmetrical stripes—the results varied greatly. Ennio Capasa’s rockabilly stripes at Costume National came by way of plaids, which were very on point as they demonstrate the transition into that fall trend. Also working stripes to a Brit rock theme was Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, who presented bold red and black stripes with a moody effect. Master sartorial star and Tommy Hilfi ger creative designer, Simon Spurr, went all stripes for his eponymous line. Another tremendous collection following this trend was Dries van Noten’s candy-striped synthetic and outdoor-friendly sportswear. He also threw in on-trend shorts over leggings for his show. Whether you decided to capitalize on the double-breasted suit with a summer-weight wool blazer from Zegna or to keep things lively with multicolored stripes like those scarves from Louis Vuitton, these current styles highlight the diversity and depth in the many luxury menswear collections for spring 2012. They key is to identify pieces that communicate your lifestyle and personality, yet consistently advance your look. So many fabulous pieces to invest in, yet so little time! ■

D

ame jillian sackler dbe has gone up an octave in her voice ,

and it isn’t first interview jitters. She is recounting her first trip to China some 30 years ago made with her late husband, Dr. Arthur M. Sackler, and racing through city names like a child in a candy shop. “We went to Beijing, Zhejiang, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Suzhou!” She ticks them off in growing delight and perfect Mandarin intonation, opening up to YUE. Jill Sackler is a private public woman; for all her wont to guard her private life from the media, she remains a bold-faced name in philanthropy. Together with Dr. Sackler, who is known to the Chinese arts and archaeology circle as one of its oldest and biggest American supporters, they have given life to countless arts and sciences institutions in the US and abroad, including the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Beijing University and the Jillian & Arthur M. Sackler Wing at the Royal Academy in London to name just a few. Chinese tourists to NYC will have been a beneficiary of their largess upon visitation of the MET's breathtaking Sackler Wing, home of the magnificent Temple of Dendur.

DOCTOR SACKLER “The first thing I'm going to say to you,” Mrs. Sackler began our interview, “is that for Arthur, first and foremost, he was a doctor. That was so much of his persona, to heal, to help, that was absolutely in him! So I want you to refer to him as Dr. Sackler.” Although most of the world will know him through his extraordinary patronage of the arts, Dr. Sackler is known as a pioneer in biological psychiatry to his peers in the sciences. “When Arthur passed away,” Dame Sackler recounts, “Frank Press, the president of the US National Academy of Sciences at the time, said to me, 'the tragedy is the next ten years of ideas that he won't have.'” spring 2012 | 63

A COLLECTOR AT HOME

Dr. Sackler at home in 1985 with 玉的雕镂。”赛克勒夫人回忆着,而当史密 some of his collections.

Dr. and Mrs. Sackler in 的样子! Suzhou on their trip to

COLLECTING TO SHARE “Even as an impoverished medical student, he found time to attend to his love for the arts, he took courses and went to auctions,” Jill shares with YUE, Dr. Sackler's first pieces were American paintings by living artists, “it was all he could afford at the time.” Dr. Sackler would go on to make his fortune through pharmaceuticals and begin to build his art collections with the acumen of a scientist. “To really understand a civilization, you must have a large enough corpus of data, you can’t know twentieth century art only by looking at Picassos,” he once said. Dr. Sackler's disposition to curate paved the way for his museumworthy collections, “he was particularly fascinated in the technological achievements of early Chinese pieces, the bronze casting and the jade carving,” Dame Sackler remembers, and when the Smithsonian looked for a donor to found a new national museum of Asian art, “Arthur couldn't have been a better choice!” His initial donation to the institute in 1987 to found the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington D.C. was a titanic collection of more than 1,000 pieces of important Asian art. “Have I ever wanted to keep his things to myself?” Dame Sackler chuckles, amused by our attempt to fish for a story, “Well this is going to be terribly boring— no, I really haven’t. Arthur spent a tremendous amount of time on his medical research, and the massive collections that he made were in his spare time, it was his joy ! Never for profit. He began his collecting to live with unique art, and he’s always said that great art belongs to the world, and I can’t agree more!”

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Dr. Sackler and Dame Sackler had first met in London, “I was manager at a company he was visiting, I said hello very politely, and he really didn't show that he had sort of even seen me! A few days later, it was a Saturday, he phoned me at home! Asking if I’d like to go to a concert that night at the Albert Hall ,” Mrs. Sackler, not having clued in to anything yet, deduced that her boss must've given Dr. Sackler her number so she could show the visiting American around. “It was symphony, and he didn't say very much, I was sitting there like this,” Mrs. Sackler re-enacts her stiff posture, “thinking when is this going to be over?” But over dinner at the Savoy, “I found out he was actually very interesting! Anyway and then he went away, he was traveling at the time.” YUE offers the theory that he is exercising a strategy from Sun Tzu's Art of War – in order to capture, one must let loose, she laughs, “he said he knew immediately after he saw me, and he was very persistent! That is one of his qualities of success. But I wasn't looking to leave London; it took me a while longer.” She would come around, of course, making New York her home and eventually accompanying Dr. Sackler on their consequential trip to China in the summer of 1980.

FRIEND OF CHINA Though Dr. Sackler had many names in Beijing, among them “Modern Medici,” few know that he has been called “the Norman Bethune of the day.” Dr. Bethune is hailed as a foreign saint in modern China for helping the ailing medical units of Mao's defenses in the late 1930s Sino-Japanese war. A young Dr. Sackler raised funds to support his efforts while a student at NYU and would first travel to China in 1976 to follow in his footsteps. Through the establishment of a China edition of his Medical Tribune publication, he allowed a whole nation of doctors who had been closed off for a decade to stay up-to-date with advances in medicine. But Dr. Sackler's intention to fund a new teaching museum would meet reluctance from Chinese authorities wary of his American capitalist roots. It was not until Dr. Sackler arrived in Beijing in 1980 bearing a throne of the illustrious emperor Qianlong that had been pilfered from the Summer Palace during the Anglo-French attack a century ago that he was finally able to convince Chinese officials of his dedication to the preservation of Chinese art. On September 8, 1986, Dr. and Mrs. Sackler returned to Beijing to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Beijing University. Dr. Sackler passed away a year later, never bearing witness to the fruition of his dreams – the Sackler Gallery in DC would open its doors in the same year, followed by the completion of the Museum at Beijing University six years later. spring 2012 | 65

A COLLECTOR AT HOME

CHAMPION OF HIS LEGACY On the eve of the 25th Anniversary of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian, Jill is praised by the New York Times for her timely $5 million donation, “many philanthropists donate money to found an institution and then leave it up to officials to worry about the operating costs. Not Dame Jillian Sackler.” This interview with YUE, the fi rst she has ever given, is a further manifestation of her tenacious support. “Jill thought that YUE was an idea whose time had come,” Katie Ziglar, director of external affairs at the Gallery , explains her decision. The Gallery in DC is not the only legacy of her husband Dame Sackler espouses. In 1989, when incidents in China's capital caused Sino-US relations to strain, Mrs. Sackler fought international opinion to guard Dr. Sackler's will. “Many people advised me to pull out of the project at Beida (Beijing University), telling me it's not the right time. I thought, well when will be the right time?” Mrs. Sackler ensured that the Museum's construction would not halt. Yet in 1993, when the Museum finally opened its doors, she found it again a target of public scrutiny. The New York Times ran an article questioning whether the project funded with $10 million from Dr. Sackler will truly serve the public. Dame Sackler immediately wrote a letter to the editor, which was published on July 13th of 1993, challenging their claims and championing Arthur's cause, “all over the world there seems to be agreement that we must try to build bridges between peoples through cultural exchanges…This was my husband's creed, and he tried in many practical ways to make the world a more peaceful and better place.” Today, Dr.Sackler’s legacy continues to thrive towards that cause. With every wave of top Chinese scholars hosted at the Gallery in DC and American scholars at the Museum in Beijing, comes not only academic advancement, but cultural diplomacy. FIFTY MORE YEARS Back in her princely mansion in Manhattan, Dame Jillian Sackler's nostalgia for her first trip to China has found a revelation, “Actually, my favorite photograph of us was taken then, in Suzhou!” Expecting the pair in regalia at the official Chinese ceremonies known to welcome Dr. Sackler in China, YUE follows an animated Mrs. Sackler across the room to see an out-of-focus picture of her in sneakers and jeans, perched atop the archetypical man-made rock formations found in the famous gardens of Suzhou. “That was taken with my very pathetic camera, but you know the funny thing about that? We just got some passing person to take it!” She howls in her singsong voice, laughing her heartiest laugh all day, “That was just serendipitous, and how beautiful is the arrangement?” Her fingers linger on the frame, “You know, Arthur always said, 'I've had a 50 year relationship with China, and Jill will have 50 more when I'm gone.' I haven't had it yet! But I'm trying to make it. 50 years. ” ■

Defining French Cuisine in New York 夏之璿 by C . S . H si a

one restaurant in new york has demonstrated

the power to bring traffic to a halt. In the summer of 2011, Chef Daniel Boulud hosted President Obama at the flagship restaurant Daniel. While the Secret Service probably will not let us know the details of the Presidential tasting menu, one can only imagine that it was quite the culinary showcase. It was so impressive that President Obama came around again in January 2012 for another event at Daniel. The path to becoming an iconic New York City chef serving world leaders was certainly not an easy one. Raised on a farm outside of Lyon, Boulud spent his adolescent years studying French cuisine under the great masters of the time, including Roger Vergé, Georges Blanc , and Michel Guérard. Having honed his skills across kitchens in Europe, Boulud arrived on American shores as the chef of the European Commission in Washington DC. After his stint in the capital, Boulud traveled north and settled in New York City. In the 1980s, the culinary landscape was changing rapidly. It was during this time that Boulud landed a job that put him in the spotlight. In 1986, Le Cirque was in its heyday; in this Upper East Side kitchen, Boulud's delightful French cuisine made him the darling of New York's elite. During his time at Le Cirque, some of New York's finest culinary talents flocked to his kitchen to learn from the new celebrity chef. On his roster of cooks during those years are the names of many of today's heralded chefs: Jacque Torres, David Bouley, Geoffrey Zakarian, and Bill Telepan. In 1987, just one year after Boulud's arrival at Le Cirque, the New York Times bestowed on the restaurant its highest honor of 4 stars.

Having accomplished what he wanted to in the kitchen, Boulud turned to his next challenge of becoming a restaurant owner. In 1993, Boulud departed Le Cirque and opened his eponymous restaurant Daniel. His passionate fans followed him uptown and the new restaurant became a phenomenal success . In fact, the restaurant was so successful that he soon needed to expand. Coincidentally, Le Cirque was moving and the old location was on the market. In 1998, Boulud was able to purchase the original Le Cirque location and turn it into the new home for Daniel. Today, Boulud operates seven successful restaurants in New York City and many more around the world. Almost 20 years since its inception, the 3-Michelin Star flagship restaurant Daniel still provides the defi nitive French dining experience. The 6 or 8 course tasting menu takes diners on a carefully crafted journey of flavors and textures while using the freshest seasonal ingredients. In fact, Boulud believes Chinese diners will truly enjoy his culinary creations, noting that “there are many parallels between French and Chinese cuisine: respect for tradition, focus [on] fresh ingredients [and] delicate flavors.” “We are fi nding Chinese diners in particular to be very sophisticated and wanting the best of the best, especially when it comes to fi ne wine, which they know we are renowned for.” The award winning wine program curated by wine director Daniel Johnnes is sophisticated enough for the oenophiles, yet approachable for casual drinkers. Watching the sommeliers uncork, decant and pour the wine is akin to watching performance art. Burgundy reds, the favorite of Boulud, dominate the wine list , but there are plenty of other wines that the sommelier can recommend that suit the meal. All of Boulud's restaurants maintain a French focus, yet each features different regions of France and a different style of dining. For innovative yet sophisticated dining, head uptown to Cafe Boulud, location of the original Daniel restaurant. Here the menu is inspired by the chef's four culinary muses: la tradition, classic French cuisine; la saison, seasonal delicacies; le portager, the vegetable garden; and le voyage, the flavor of world cuisines. On the West Side, Boulud has created a trifecta of dining options across the street from Lincoln Center. Bar Boulud is the wine-centric casual restaurant designed to invoke the style of a wine cellar and features a circular wine tasting table. Epicerie Boulud is a corner market that features fresh baked breads, pastries, ice cream and a raw bar. His latest New York creation, Boulud Sud, focuses on Southern French fare inspired by Mediterranean ingredients and flavors. Heading downtown, the vibe is more casual and so are the Boulud restaurants. Adjacent to Times Square, DB Bistro Moderne is the perfect place to grab a bite before or after a show. In the East Village, DBGB is a gastro pub that serves exceptional beer, and occasionally, a whole hog dinner for groups !

From Left: Chef Boulud, the Bar at Restaurant Daniel, and the Main Dining Room at Daniel.

Outside of New York, Boulud's restaurants can now be found around the world... though not always at the places one would expect. While other Western chefs expanded into China via Hong Kong and Shanghai, Boulud opened the Maison Boulud in Beijing. “Shanghai, being quite international, did open up to Western chefs sooner, but Beijing is a city of incredible appreciation for great food and culture.” says Boulud. “It was meaningful for me to be one of the fi rst well know Western chefs established there.” The location of his fi rst Asian restaurant also had significant meaning to Boulud, a transplanted French chef who found success in America. “Maison Boulud occupies the former US embassy within the prestigious Legation Quarter. The building itself has very grand and stately architecture and was home to such significant moments in US-Chinese History.” With so many restaurants spanning high cuisine to a casual bistro, the choices could seem overwhelming. “You'll fi nd a common thread through all my restaurants. They are chef-driven, their menus are inspired by the best ingredients we can fi nd and we have a culture of service that we constantly reinforce through training our staff.” In the past 20 years, Boulud has turned his culinary prowess into a brand that embodies his exceptional standards in food, wines and service. During my most recent visit to Daniel, I called the restaurant to inform them that I would be arriving a few minutes late due to the New York rush hour. As soon as I sat down at my table, a waiter showed up table-side and poured me a glass of Champagne to “take my mind off the traffic”. Before the fi rst course was served, the evening was already a memorable one. Attention to detail is hospitality at its fi nest and needs to be experienced in person when you are in New York. ■

New York City 夏之璿 by C.S. Hsia

showcased through the execution of basic elements. In American cuisine, that would be the hamburger. The familiar bun, meat and sauce combination takes to new heights in New York City, as some of the world's greatest chefs reinvent the hamburger and surprise even the most discerning of diners. This article will not tell you which burger is the best in the city, the debate is ongoing as each year chefs strive to top each other's creations. However, here are some of the most distinctive burgers that you should try to experience in the City. Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien Within the luxurious midtown hotel Le Parker Meridien, a hotel renowned for its $1000 lobster caviar omelette, one would expect an assortment of fine dining options. What most people don't expect to find is a casual burger, fries and beer place that's literally a “burger joint.” Actually, many people cannot find the place at all. The Burger Joint is hidden behind floor to ceiling red velvet curtains, and has no obvious signage other than a neon light the shape of a burger. Perhaps the easiest way to find your way in is to follow the line of people stretching out the door. Once you make it through the hallway, the decor is night and day from the swanky hotel. The faux-wood panel walls are covered with odd movie posters, and the menu is written on cardboard. Despite the artificially created sloppy appearance, the $7.35 cheeseburger is among the best in the city. The meat is best cooked to a beautiful, juicy medium rare, and each ingredient is meticulously stacked . . . until you bite into it and inevitably make a delicious mess. spring 2012 | 77

Left to right: The Burger Joint is not what you would expect inside a 5 star hotel. The 21 burger, one of NY's first upscale burgers. DB bistro serves great French food, and a great DB Burger.

DB BISTRO MODERN “DB BURGER” There has been an ongoing contest between New York restaurants for the bragging rights of serving the luxurious hamburger. All of this started when French celebrity chef Daniel Boulud introduced the $32 DB Burger. The fine-dining worthy burger features a patty made of the finest cuts of meat, which is then stuffed with braised short ribs, truffles, and foie gras. The patty is served on a Parmesan bun, and comes with a side of either pomme frites or a pomme souffle. During peak truffle season, you can make a luxurious hamburger even more decadent by throwing on an extra helping of truffles, pushing the price tag to $150. Leave it to a French chef to seriously glam up an American classic. OLD HOMESTEAD - “KOBE BEEF BURGER” New York City's oldest steak house knows a thing or two about beef, and they put this expertise into a burger. Shortly after the introduction of DB Bistro's luxury burger, Old Homestead stole the spotlight with their $41 20 oz. American Kobe Burger. Served classically with tater tots, chipotle ketchup, and stone ground mustard. On the surface, it looks like an ordinary burger. However one bite and you'll realize the difference the finest cut of meat makes in a burger.

Clockwise from top left: The famous Shack Burger. Any weather and time of day, expect a crowd at Madison Square Park Shake Shack. The Black Label Burger is made with ground dry-aged beef.

21 CLUB - “21 BURGER” An 80 year old restaurant steeped in tradition, the 21 Club is worth a visit just for its history. In the 30s during the prohibition, “21” was a speakeasy that routinely evaded the raids of Federal agents through a secret hidden cellar only accessible through a well concealed wall. During the Wall St. boom of the 1980s, the restaurant became a favorite of bankers and spawned the concept of “power lunch”. In fact, one scene of the famous fi lm Wall Street was fi lmed at 21 Club. Today, 21 is also famous for the '21' Burger, a thick and juicy burger cooked with duck fat, and paired with toasted Parker house bun, frisee, sauteed onions, At $32, this burger does not come cheap, but the fantastic dining environment, makes it all worth it. SHAKE SHACK It may not be the most expensive burger, it is also not the newest burger, but this is still a favorite among New Yorkers. Created by Denny Meyer, the man behind the fine dining empire Union Square Hospitality Group, the Shack Burger has developed a cult-like following. The top secret blend of meats including premium cuts such as brisket, chuck, short rib, and skirt steak, are created in cooperation with top meat purveyor Pat LaFrieda, and protected by confidentiality agreement. With 5 new locations opened in recent years, it's now much easier to get yourself a Shack Burger ($4.55 single, $7.10 double). However there is still something special about the original Madison Square park location, where a burger under the skies is a simple pleasure. MINETTA TAVERN - BLACK LABEL BURGER The most recent entrant into the premium burger game, Minetta Tavern quickly became the talk of the town with its new Black Label Burger, which uses dry aged beef normally reserved for premium steaks. Around two years ago, the beef purveyors at La Frieda invented a nouveau beef blend they called “Black Label”. Realizing the potential, the chefs at Minetta Tavern requested that the blend be made exclusive to the restaurant, thus was born the “Black Label Burger”. A bite into the $26 Black Label Burger is as much a revelation as someone tasting a dry aged steak for the first time. To showcase the concentrated flavors from dry aging, the restaurant serves the burger without cheese. While you're here, you can also check out the steak, which some have named the best in the city. ■ SPRING 2012 | 79

EVERYONE DREAMS ABOUT OWNING A PART OF NEW YORK CITY,

to walk the streets of Manhattan and call it your own. Whether you are a visitor who has fallen in love with the city, or a student who has decided to settle down in the Big Apple, the real estate market is one of the most exciting and breathtaking in the world. Before you get too caught up in the romanticism of owning property in New York City, it's best to take a step back and approach the process with a cool head and some knowledge of how real estate transactions work in the City. For starters, it's important to fi nd an agent that understands the real estate market, the needs and wants of Chinese buyers, who can help you fi lter the numerous listings and to fi nd suitable properties. “Customarily in Asia, there is only one broker involved in real estate transactions representing both the seller and the buyer and the broker takes commission from both sides” explains Peter Wei of Town Real Estate. “A buyer's broker in the US splits the previously agreed commission with the seller's broker, which means that having a buyer's broker is completely free to the buyer.” Traditionally, the broker's commission has always been around 6%, split evenly down the middle between the buyer's and seller's brokers. This number is negotiable.

The actual search usually begins with some basic geography lessons. Visiting a neighborhood as a tourist and actually living there are two different things. it's essential to understand the unique characteristics that define areas within New York City. “I mostly educate them regarding different areas in Manhattan, like Eastside, Westside, Tribeca, Chelsea, and the Village etc” said Jane Tjian, Executive VP of Halstead Property. Since each zone also has distinct styles of residential buildings, “ I also explain to them the difference between prewar and postwar buildings .” Pre-war buildings are defined as buildings built before World War II, which feature larger rooms, wood floors, and higher ceilings, but lack modern day amenities. Most modern day new constructions are loaded to the brim with amenities, such as gyms , spas, movie rooms, or even a shared walk-in freezer to receive grocery deliveries.

Once you've decided on a general neighborhood, it's time to understand the difference between a condominium (condo) and a cooperative (co-op). In the Manhattan real estate market, apartments for purchase are roughly 70% co-op and 30 % condo. While buildings may look the same from the outside, the buying process and ongoing management of these property types are quite different. In layman's terms, a condo building matches the traditional Chinese concept of buying property: you pay for a unit and now you own it and receive a deed for this property. Most of the new constructions in the city are in the form of condos. With a co-op you do not actually own the real estate. Instead, you own stocks representing shares of ownership in the building. “Co-ops are generally cheaper than condos but have a lot of restrictions” explains Jeff Yi, Associate Broker at Halstead Properties . “They also have strict requirements regarding cash reserve, gift money, income, pied-a-terre, etc.” These restrictions are designed to foster a good environment for the residents, but could be slightly intimidating for new buyers. In fact, co -ops require board approval of potential buyers through an interview process. Buyers must complete what's known as a “Board Package”, which usually includes a purchase application (provided by the co-op managing company), signed financial statement, 2-3 years federal tax returns, bank statements, brokerage statements, reference letters. For new buyers from overseas, this could be a daunting hurdle. However, if you're in the market for the prime pre-war buildings along Central Park West, 5th Ave , or Park Ave., almost all of them are co-op buildings. Getting approved by the board at these buildings is often considered a badge of honor.

Another difference between condos and co-ops is the maintenance fees (also known as common charges) and real estate taxes. In a condo, real estate taxes are paid directly to the City, since you are the owner of the property. In a co -op, the building is assessed as a whole and the co-op pays the real estate taxes. The owner, as a shareholder, is then charged a percentage of the taxes. This amount is typically included in the monthly maintenance bill. To encourage the development of new condos and co-ops, the New York City government has a 421a tax abatement program for new buyers which lowers the initial tax burden for 10 years.

Once you've set your sights on a property, it's time to make a deal through the numerical tug-of-war. “In my experience, Chinese buyers tend to be very strong negotiators,” notes Lauren De Niro Pipher of Prudential Douglas Elliman . “This can work for and against you. Don't make the mistake of too low an opening bid as sellers won't take the offer seriously so you'll risk losing the deal.” Another common misconception is what to expect after the seller agrees to your offer. Jacky Teplitzky, Managing Director of Prudential Douglas Elliman notes that “some buyers think if they have an accepted offer it is a done deal, but it is not the case in NYC where the offers are verbal: not signed and not binding.” This is the time to work aggressively and get the paperwork signed. Normally, when you sign the contract, buyers need to pay 10% of the purchase price and the remaining 90% at closing. While most Chinese buyers are all cash, according to Mr. Yi, getting fi nancing is not an impossible task. “Getting fi nancing is indeed tougher for foreign nationals but some banks offer fi nancing to foreign buyers. In general, foreign buyers have to put down at least 40% down payment.” If your plan is to pay with all cash, keep in mind any government imposed wire fund limitations, so that the deal does not get delayed. A broker with significant experience working with Chinese buyers can be quite resourceful in this matter. This would also be a great time to retain a real estate attorney to help you sort out the legalese at closing. Your broker should have many great recommendations on attorneys that specialize in international buyers.

One critical step prior to closing the deal is to schedule an inspection. The inspection process allows the buyer a final opportunity to check for any problems with the apartment and to ask the seller to make necessary repairs before closing. For new construction, the inspection process is easier and can be done by the buyer. Bring an electronic device to check the outlets, run the water (hot and cold), and test out the appliances including air conditioning, washer/dryer, fridge and ovens. Also, make sure that there are no scratches on the wall paint or cracks in the flooring and counter-tops left by the contractors when they move their tools and equipment out. For older apartments, the inspections are generally more complicated. Consult your agent for recommendations for hiring a professional home inspector. Come the day of closing, your attorney and broker should have sorted out all the paperwork for you to sign. My final piece of advice: bring a nice pen for signing your name many times. When it's all done, grab your keys, and you may start calling yourself a New Yorker. ■

AT HOME IN NEW YORK

Beyond what most boutique hotels can offer, AKA’s amenities include access to complimentary business centers, executive boardrooms, high tech fitness centers, spas and resident only lounges. Newspapers from around the world can be delivered to the residences, while private trunk shows, wine tastings and other exclusive events can easily be arranged upon special request. “We strive to deliver a resident experience that complements the lifestyle they are accustomed to, and perhaps elevates it,” Friedman said. The best part may be the locations, though. With properties in Times Square, Central Park, Sutton Place and the United Nations, potential home buyers could sample a number of New York neighborhoods. Recognizing the importance of offering an authentic New York experience, “AKA ensures that each property is thoughtfully decorated to reflect the flair of its neighborhood, so you can live like a local,” Ms. Friedman said. For those seeking larger living areas in a convenient midtown location, consider New York City’s Sutton Court Hotel Residences. With easy access to public transportation and many of the city’s business hubs, restaurants, boutiques, attractions, and cultural landmarks, this stylish and well-equipped hotel takes away all stress associated with relocation. Boasting a range of suites complete with spacious layouts, full kitchens, serene bedrooms, large living areas and workstations, each residence in Sutton Court features stone counters, stainless-steel appliances and 300-thread count sheets. Result: A hassle-free option for business travelers and families alike. Alternatively, life as an Upper East Sider at The Marmara Manhattan delivers the best of both worlds in the form of a deluxe, modern living environment within a serene, sophisticated neighborhood. With a selection of one, two or three bedroom apartment-style suites, this hotel is ideal for those looking to feel at home during an extended stay. The elegant apartments are outfitted with custom-designed kitchens, contemporary living areas, and stunning window views of the city, providing a relaxing retreat after a day of working, shopping or sightseeing. Other amenities include complimentary Internet, flat screen TVs, DVD players, iPod docs, and a 24-hour concierge service. Welcome home. ■
