YUHUA LEE I am Yuhua Lee, Newcastle based architecture Part 1 graduated originating from the city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. In July 2020 I graduated with a BA Honours Architecture degree with a 2nd class from Newcastle University. I enjoy crafting and engaging in design solutions. Architecture has always fascinated me as it not only promotes the designing of an environment, but also contributes to the way of life. I am keen to seek for opportunities to hone my architectural skills through practical applications. This is a sample portfolio that includes selected projects from my most recent architectural design projects.

Performing Art School, Newcastle City Centre Located in the heart of Newcastle, the space curates spatial experiences of the liveliness in the city. Nestled on a site with a rich history in motion picture for the past seventy years, the project is driven by its cultural context of dance and movement. Through the building circulation, the school integrates musicians, dancers and other students that concedes a strong community within the school. The project functions on architecture’s role in learning, working, performing, socialising and living. The transition between these spaces is explored in the design to achieve a welcoming atmosphere to the users.

Programme The programme is divided into four faculties; theatre studies, music studies, screenwriting and acting studies. These programmes unite as a whole to run the school. All these spaces are formed within the main circulation that runs throughout the building. The design enables the users to interact with each other while maintaining different spatial orders for the students. The public sectors of the building programme are located on the ground levels while the semi-public spaces such as classrooms and dance studios are located from level three to seven.

Circulation and Layout The movement throughout the building allows students to interact in the atrium while maintaining a hierarchy between the users. The common space are located on each level of the atrium. Designing this challenged me to think about the movement and flow in this mixed-use building. There are three ways of access; the public main stairs/lifts, the semi-public for students and staffs, and a semi-private one for residents on the uppermost levels. 10

Material and Colour Palette Taking inspiration from the surrounding materials, the Pearl Assurance and Commercial Union House, concrete has been used for the exteriors and interiors of the building. The exterior concrete claddings provide a contemporary finishes which will stark contrast to the surrounding 1970s buildings. Concrete will dominate the whole structure, floors and walls. Combined with the exposed ceilings, this will feature an industrial-like atmosphere that is spacious, robust and open to accommodate all types of events and openings. The colour palette is kept at minimal to adjust to the chaging seasons of events throughout the year.

Refugee Centre, Leith, Edinburgh This project was from my second year of studies. The site is located on River Wak in Leith Edinburgh, Scotland. This project aims to help with the resettlement of refugees in the welcoming city. The centre accommodates all types of refugees from families to single people. The motive of this project was to design a work place and also a dwelling place for the mixed users. The ground level holds two jewellery workshops, which will be directed by professional gold smiths and two pop-up shops at the entrance of the centre. The common space, conference room and office are located on level one of the building. Designing the layout of the second level is challenging as it needs to house different age groups and people. Public and private kitchens, an outdoor laundry room and roof top are layout to provide daily necessities to users.

Perspective section of the balcony in the Refugee Centre
The above section is from the balcony in the Refugee Centre. It shows in detail the difference between the use of interior and exterior material. The 1:20 section on the following page is from our Architectural Technology coursework. The section cuts from the entrance to the theatre, the double height dance studio and a music room. It uses rain screen cladding and reinforced concrete.

Model Making | Markethall
This is a model from my Stage 1 BA Architecture. The Markethall consists of a music theatre, which sits on the highest point of the structure, a restaurant and other miscellaneous shops. What is interesting about this market was the retractable roof that functions according to the weather.

Primer
Primer was the first project in Stage 3. We analysed a specific construction drawings from artists like Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian and El Lissitzky. Through modelling and axonometric analytic drawing. Then we explored on planar, grid, volume and spatial studies. These series of volumetric models explores the lightness between the solids and voids. The grid system provides structure of order and beauty to create aesthetically pleasing architecture.
