Design Development & Construction Document EDG Architecture & Engineering| 2019 | Completed On 40th Street overlooking Bryant Park, the new EDG office is an interior project that we, as both designer and client, conducted acquisition, space planning, interior design all the way to the construction completion. As a working space for a growing company, the project carefully considered the flexibility for future expansion while aiming for a solid and timeless design. To achieve a variety of different wall finishes—red brick wall, wood slat wall, moss wall, and glass partition, we collaborated with different vendors and manufacturers closely and customized the details to provide the best working environment for ourselves. As a home for EDG, but also BOND and Mosaic (real estate firm and IT firm founded by EDG principal), the office foster better work and inspires all different professionals who are sharing the space together.

REGO PARK LOBBY RENOVATION Rego Park, Queens Project Architect & Manager: Concept to Completion EDG Architecture & Engineering|2017-2019| Completed Rego Park lobby is my first project at EDG. With a limited budget, the challenge is to transform three 40 years old lobbies to bright and refreshing spaces that could potentially increase the value of the property. By redefining the seating area and circulation zone, a cozy and secured lounge area is created for residents and visitors at each lobby. Chevron pattern, represented by porcelain wall tiles, vinyl flooring, glass decals and various details at different scales, created a fun and timeless visual motif. Working independently, I delivered design and documents from concept design to completion, responsibilities ranging from spatial design, material & fixture selection, to submittal & shop drawing review, schedule and payment management. During construction, I led bi-weekly client meetings and coordinated regularly with external teams on inspections and site visits.

The site is a full city block near Central Park between Madison Avenue and 5th Avenue. As one of the first two team members, I initially performed property analysis for the development site, navigating a large number of zoning and code considerations, and found multiple locations available to construct approximately 170,000 sq.ft. of gross floor area. The comprehensive assessment helped the client unlock the maximum value of the property. Meanwhile, the team repurposed existing ground floor space and increased parking on the site. As a result, our work includes designing approximately 170,000 sq.ft. in total new floor area, among which include a new 21-story residential tower, and renovating 48,000 sq.ft. as part of over 10 projects throughout the development site. 1590 MADISON AVE. -Retail & Lobby RenovationManhattan, New York Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Document Our high-level understanding of zoning and building design experience gives us the advantage of having a complete picture of a development site. As a result of our initial work finding ways to capture the full underutilized FAR, we are currently designing the reprogramming of 48,000 sq.ft. of ground floor spaces, including retail and commercial; additional commercial/community facility space; the consolidation of lobbies to recapture floor area. In the lobby and retail reconfiguration and interior design, we looked at the site holistically, carefully examining the existing building’s operations, while considering the seamless integration of the proposed new circulation.

MODERN ORNAMENTAL New York City Core Designer & Researcher EDG Architecture & Engineering| 2018 | Ongoing This project began with the simple goal of finding a way to salvage and restore many of the deteriorating architectural treasures in New York City, and around the world. Utilizing rendering software coupled with algorithmic modeling programs, renderings are transformed into 3D-printable objects. We focused on hollow form plastic molds for the economy—to be filled with standard and colored concrete. Through exhaustive experimentation, the team found the perfect balance of material cost, efficiency, and strength, ensuring that the molds can be easily reproduced. This process will not only usher in the forgotten craft of the “hand” into the modern age but also democratize the process of design, allowing practitioners from divergent fields to execute what was previously unimaginable.

BUSAN GALLERIA DEPARTMENT STORE Busan, South Korea Core Design Team Member - Competition Winner +SD OMA| 2013 | Ongoing The Hanhwa Galleria department stores are the most prestigious of its kind in Korea, and are known for their innovative combination of luxury shopping and art and design. Famous worldwide for their premium and VVIP shopping experience, OMA has taken this further by integrating the luxury department into the core of the building, where VVIPs ascend in full privacy into the heart of retail. The luxury cube, or “gem”, becomes the central focus and visual register of the Busan Galleria shopping experience. Back of house areas and mechanical cores are shifted to the exterior periphery to maximize uninterrupted shopping spaces that revolve around the luxury “gem”.

NINGBO MASTER PLAN Ningbo, China Core Design Team Member- Competition OMA| 2014 In China, while most cities attempt to modernize, their urban fabric often disperses to the city’s suburbs, and thus the historic city often loses its original character. Our competition entry for Zhongshan Road seeks to amplify Ningbo’s rich identity through a series of interventions in landscape, infrastructure, preservation, and architecture. Ten kilometers of Zhongshan Road -historically Ningbo’s cultural, commercial, and political spine- is designed to foster and exhibit the city’s past, while at the same time allowing for its rapid growth.

JIANZI PAVILION Beijing, China Designer-Installation SPARK| 2015 | Beijing International Design Week In the design of the pavilion for 2015 Beijing Design Week, we reconsiders the traditional context and use of the playful featherball as an architectural material, forming a faรงade from 15,000 colorful jianzi that extend over a steel frame. The pavilion has been built on a formerly abandoned plot in the historic hutong district, in turn creating a new public area for both locals and visitors to experience and enjoy.

JIANZI PAVILION Beijing, China Designer-Installation SPARK| 2015 | Beijing International Design Week The client is ’21 Cake’, a popular gourmet pastry franchise in Beijing. In their headquarter design, the two-story lightgrey office holds all the rich flavors of vibrant tones inside, topped with a large skylight. White surfaces on the interior act as backdrops for the laminated panes of primary colors, red, blue and yellow. Depending on one’s position and sequence through the hallway, the overlapping planes visually overlap to create different combinations of resultant hues spanning the range of the rainbow, illuminated by natural and artificial light. The furniture, also designed by our internal team, are fragments of geometries that can fit into one another as puzzle pieces, allowing for flexibility in reunion space and function.

Wine is a product that plumbs unique perception through visual, smell and taste. Wine tasting nowadays has become an activity that encourage the taster to activate different part of the body and concentrate on every tiny aspect of the wine. So instead of a bar, what I propose on the site of Floirac, Bordeaux is a wine-related space that trigger the different sense of human body and treat the wine as a key for education and communication. People from different countries, as well as the neighborhood, would use the space to store their own wine, share the bottles from the collection, formulate an unbiased opinion about their favorites.

Architecture in this project tries to respond to environment factors (air flow and temperature) which affect wine serving and storing and to intensify scientific principles of energy saving, terroir physical capacity and the climate. Inspired by Bernoulli’s principle, two public corridors are designed inside the building mass to receive the wind and generate negative pressures so as to remove the exhaust air from the functional space surrounding it. Meanwhile, to ensure the temperature stability for longterm wine storing, heat recovery ventilators, as a prototype, expands to the size of the wine storage, contributing a tailored environment temperatures for specific wine types. In the wine storage, bottles are organized as a direct respond to the natural properties of wine. Visitors no longer find their favorite by the brand, but will immerse themselves in the spectrum of temperature and use their senses to explore tastes for themselves and to decide what brings them pleasure.

The Red Hook Theater is a multi-functional space for dramatic presentations and concerts. Sitting in the historical warehouse, the audience chamber is designed as an independent “object” that could accommodates 600 seats. By opening up a “garage door”, the theater stage extends out from the audience chamber and becomes a larger flexible platform that can also serve the neighborhood with community meetings, design expositions and gala dinners.

HOUSING IN BRONX Bronx, NY Design Studio | Pair Work Columbia University | 2015

In New York City, there’s always been a question for people, especially those who just start a family, that if they should move to suburban area or stay in the city. With convenient subway connection to Manhattan, the site located in south Bronx provide an opportunity to bring the suburban lifestyle into an urban setting. As one of the most essential elements in a single family house, front yard and backyard play important roles in spatial configuration and interaction between public and private zones.

YUJING CUI || +1.347.392.8077 yujingnc@gmail.com

The project aims to “combine the comforts of suburban living with the social intensity of urban desity”

Type A: 2-Bedroom Duplex 1400 sqft+700 sqft

Type D4 :1-Bedroom Unit 550 sqft+210 sqft

Type E: 2-Bedroom Unit 700 sqft+360 sqft

Within each unit, “Front Yard” consists of a living room, a flexible entrance area and extends out to the public corridor and balcony. “Backyard” is highlighted by a large planting area open to sky. It is attached by bedrooms where a close feeling to nature has been maximized. Concrete waffle slab is introduced to hold up the soil and is integrated to the system of water supply. “Flower pot” has been used as a inspirational prototype for the design of pre-fab structure.

AMERICA’S NEXT TOP ARTIST Long Island City, NY Design Studio | Individual Work Columbia University | 2015 Nowadays, the value of art is as much a function as the celebrity of the artist as of the quality of their work. However, celebrity artist is not just about being great artist--it’s about having personality, and being an entertainer. Within the art world, the auction is big form of entertainment. The art bank proposed manipulates value by taking advantage of the character of auction house. Its auction house expand and becomes a set for artist live show, which is a new form of entertainment. It also include an exclusive studio tour at the backstage. It works as an interface between artist and investors to 1) help young artists gain exposure and develop their network and promote themselves 2)help art investor get a deeper understanding of art through different ways of observation and interaction, so they can invest not just in art but in personalities. The resulting interface works both with and against the market and celebrity culture. YUJING CUI || +1.347.392.8077 yujingnc@gmail.com

Industrialized communities are prevalent in every corner of the world today, and as a result the global population is now more urban than rural. Over the next century, existing and developing metropolises will have to re-consider traditional relationships between industrial and public territories in order to accommodate and sustain an increased level of demand for space and services. This project examines past and present strategies of concrete recycling system and relevant infrastructural demands of our society. We analyze the current state and potential futures of concrete industry and re-think how industrial technologies and/or landscapes might be re-calibrated to serve future infrastructural networks along the New York area. Meanwhile, new relationships are created between the public, local ecology and the industry. YUJING CUI || +1.347.392.8077 yujingnc@gmail.com
