LL: YOU MADE NUMEROUS TRIPS TO NYC TO MEET DIRECTLY WITH SOME OF THESE COMPANIES AND SELL THEM ON COMING HERE. WHAT DIFFERENCE DID THAT MAKE, AND WHAT DID YOU TELL THEM? AC: Do they understand what Boxing Week is, not just Boxing Day? Do they understand that Canadians have a different psyche when it comes to department stores than Americans do? Do they understand the importance of hockey in this market? There’s a strategic vision of understanding that with luxury players, it takes a great deal of time to nurture them, to get them to trust you. There is a lot of red tape, a lot of convincing, and it starts in New York. We work to help them get into the market. It’s important to meet them face-to-face. It’s only an hour away. We have to remember that this isn’t another state they are moving into, it’s a brand new country. Our goal is also to convince them to come visit us, and feel the energy and vibe of the shopping centre.

TORONTO’S NEW LUXE HUB YORKDALE SHOPPING CENTRE HAS MADE A MAJOR MOVE INTO LUXURY RETAILING, WITH THE LAUNCH OF SEVERAL FIRST-TO-MARKET STORES. WE SAT DOWN WITH YORKDALE GM ANTHONY CASALANGUIDA TO GET THE SCOOP BY MARK KEAST

Y

orkdale Shopping Centre is about to turn another page in their evolution with the 2013 roll-out of nine first-to-market luxury retailers, including John Varvatos, AllSaints and David Yurman. The shopping centre’s annual traffic numbers eclipse 21 million. A 200SF Nordstrom store is on the way in 2016. These accomplishments in many ways come down to face-to-face meetings with the people behind the American brands coming into the market. Lush Luxury sat down with Yorkdale’s GM Anthony Casalanguida, on the eve of the soft opening of one of those luxury retailers: John Varvatos. LL: HOW IS THE LUXURY MARKET IN CANADA DIFFERENT NOW COMPARED TO RECENT HISTORY? AC: Retailers are competing globally now. A lot of the growth we are experiencing in the retail industry is because Americans are finally realizing that I am not going to go to Cleveland anymore,

LL: WHAT’S THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN THIS INDUSTRY? AC: What you want to do is create a vision that everyone will buy into. The biggest challenge that any manager has is ensuring that the people at the shopping centre have a pride of ownership. But when I came here (six years ago), that was already in place. All I had to do was fine-tune it. I absolutely love this property. Every day there’s variety in what I do. At an industry function not too long ago, I had someone ask me how I was doing. I told him I was doing okay. He pulled me aside and asked me if I was kidding. “You are managing the best asset in the country,” he says, “and all you can say is you are okay?” He said if I don’t say I am doing tremendous, then I am in X the wrong business. And he was right. ●

or expand to Buffalo, I am going to go to Toronto, because it has a population base bigger than Chicago. At the same time, Europeans are better understanding the Canadian shopper as well, and Canadian brands like Holt Renfrew and Harry Rosen remain anchors on the luxe retail front at Yorkdale. WHAT ARE THESE FIRST-TO-MARKET LUXURY BRANDS LOOKING FOR? AC: Look at John Varvatos. They want a brand presence. They are being sold here already, but they want people to have the experience of shopping their product, in their stores. They want their stores to be in the top five in North America. They want to use the Yorkdale location as a platform to jump off with more stores in Canada. This is a great opportunity for them to see what is involved logistically in terms of expansion, what the product demand is in external markets. We are helping them speed up their expansion process.

hen buying a luxury watch, always go with what you love. That’s first and foremost. It’s a big decision, involving a lot of money. The piece has to make you feel good when you strap it on to your wrist. After that? Well, that’s where education comes in. For the most part, luxury watches are a bad economic investment, since they depreciate with time. Because most people sell or trade in luxury watches, the objective when making the investment is to understand the value in your purchase. As you begin to educate on yourself on makes a timepiece considered luxurious, you will understand why some brands and models hold their value better than others. Generally, gold- and platinum-made watches usually depreciate faster than stainless steel.

The first prize in value retention goes to two brands – Patek Philippe and Rolex. They’ve earned respect for their quality and status. Passed down from generation to generation, in some cases they actually increase in value. That explains the huge market for vintage Rolex and Patek timepieces. Customizing luxury watches with precious stones such as diamonds will not help keep high re-sale value. The factors that determine value are supply and demand. Limited editions of the most famous brands are the most popular collectibles for the connoisseur. Panerai has a relatively new following. Because of that new popularity, they are keeping their value well. Breitling’s popular Navitimer model has historical significance and does well on the resale market due to its popularity. Omega has a great following. The Speedmaster “Man on the Moon” series continues to be in high demand. But the first prize in value retention goes to two brands—Patek Philippe and Rolex. They’ve earned respect for their quality and status. Passed down from generation to generation, in some cases they actually increase in value. That explains the huge market for vintage Rolex and Patek timepieces. So when shopping for a luxury timepiece, go for the beauty, but don’t forget the brains. Retention of value when it comes to expensive X watches is well worth exploring. ●

raditionally, one doesn’t wear a watch on formal occasions. Enjoying oneself should be the priority, not timekeeping. If anything, one normally opts for a pocket watch. However, if you do choose to wear a luxury timepiece, follow these simple, tried-and-true rules: • GO FOR A SLIM, UNADORNED PIECE WITH A BLACK LEATHER STRAP • REMEMBER, THE GOAL IS “REFINED MINIMALISM” • THE METAL SHOULD MATCH THE CUFFLINKS • THE MARKINGS ON THE FACE OF THE TIMEPIECE SHOULD BE MINIMAL

72-hour power reserve, sitting at 34 mm. One of the most beautiful automatic movements in the industry, the 18k gold rotor displays the H. Moser & Cie coat of arms. Georges-Henry Meyland, the former CEO of Audemars Piquet, acquired Moser, and this is the first release under his direction. Generally the reviews have been very positive. The timepiece’s second timezone is read by a small, red-faceted hand, which displays local time, while the gold hour and minute hands display home time. When not using the second timezone it is hidden behind the gold hour hand. An interesting feature and a tell-tale sign this is a travel watch is the small aperture day and night indicator below 12 o’clock – changing from white to black at 12 noon, then black to white at midnight. The case is 40.8mm. The Nomad also features the H. Moser escapement module, a modern touch, balanced by the more classical-style balance wheel with adjustable white gold screws. The strap is made from hand-stitched alligator, brown for the rose gold model, and black for the platinum version. In many ways, when wearing the timepiece, the luxury is in its bare essentials. The Nomad was introduced at Baselworld earlier this year. Retail price in rose gold is $36,000 and $48,000 X for the platinum version. ●

or the timepiece connoisseur, true craftsmanship is something not to be underestimated, and H. Moser & Cie, based in Schaffhausen, is a true manufacturer. The company makes just 1200 timepieces per year, offering real value for the luxury dollar. The H. Moser & Cie Nomad Dual Time is as elegant and refined as they come. In terms of finishing, this is an exceptional watch, rivaling Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Söhne, and Vacheron Constantin. Moser is one of those independent watch companies that make exquisite pieces. Moser is known in the industry for making all its own movements – six unique calibers in total. The Nomad features the HMC 346 calibre, their first self-winding movement, with a

A

stint in politics looked a tall order back in the 1980s when Arnold Schwarzenegger was lording it on the big screen in action-packed thrillers such as Terminator and Predator, but the 66-year-old Austrian/American’s career trajectory since has been as impressive as his bulging muscles. How did all of this happen? According to Arnie himself, a mixture of his own positivity and the chances he was afforded upon his emigration from Austria to America have played its part, with the powerhouse actor as keen as ever to portray the United States as the genuine land of opportunity. “Yes, I always was a positive person, but then again I didn’t have any reasons not to be. I mean, from the time I made the decision to come to America... everything that I have achieved is because of America. “No matter what people say, when you come to a place like this you know things are going to happen. Here, there’s no one trying to derail you; you know people are helping you and people are positive even. And that’s even though they maybe didn’t believe I could do all the things that I believed I could do! But still it’s a very positive place. I had to make it here because, by nature, I was always very positive and upbeat.”

I used to wear a lot of Seikos but sometimes when you switch to a certain manufacturer, you get the feeling you have found the one that is right for you. The Panerai, the Audemars Piquet... they were good moments! The Piquet, especially.

Success, whether it be in films – Terminator 2 took over $500million at the box office – or, as unlikely as it may have seemed, in politics Schwarzenegger served two terms as Governor of California from 2003 to 2011 – has been as unstoppable as the Terminator himself. But the one constant in his eclectic career has been the array of wristwatches on his arm – what is it about the timepiece that he loves so much? “The size, the magnitude, the big stuff! I don’t like small watches; I want something that really makes a statement. I also like the fact you use different watches for different occasions. I like the way I can choose a different watch for a different setting.” Schwarzenegger’s collection of watches has always been vast. Does he have a favourite that’s appeared in one of his films? “Wow – that’s a question. I think different watches suit different movies and different eras. What I will say is it’s certainly been great having so many beautiful watches to wear. “I guess, if you were really pressing me for an answer, I’d have to come back to is the Seiko Arnie H558. I think I wore this in seven different movies. It’s a very sporty watch, hard-wearing, and that was really reflective of the movies I was doing at the time back then. It was a great

combination. But I’ve always liked vintage watches as well, because they’ve been big watches.” What about in general, everyday life? “I used to wear a lot of Seikos but sometimes when you switch to a certain manufacturer, you get the feeling you have found the one that is right for you. The Panerai, the Audemars Piquet... they were good moments! The Piquet, especially.” Yet Arnie isn’t too ostentatious with his watches – they are there merely for his own satisfaction, not anybody else’s. “Sure, watches are there to be worn. I choose a watch, put it on, get on with my day. I don’t like all that watch winder stuff – it’s so unnecessary. So I don’t show off my watches ... I don’t want to do that; I just want to enjoy them.” And what of the chances of us enjoying Schwarzenegger in more films now his political journey is over? “I want to keep on doing movies – that is what feels the most natural for me. I think the older you get the more people think you have other projects away from this, or perhaps no projects at all, but I just want to keep on making movies. It gives me the biggest thrill and I’m glad I have come back to the industry because I always X miss it in the time I spend away from it.” ●

THE LUXURY OF SLEEP

YOUR BED IS YOUR OWN OASIS FOR PEACE, TRANQUILITY AND RELAXATION B Y N I C H O L A S VA R D O N

T

he window was open just enough to let a soft brisk breeze flow through, the sheer curtains dancing with a soft elegance. The dawn was breaking, sunlight peering into my half open eyes. “Ah!” … I said aloud as I greeted the new day with joy and anticipation. I had awoken in the same position I had fallen asleep in the night before, free of perspiration, never hot or cold. That was indeed my best sleep ever. Can your remember your best night’s sleep? It should have been last night, at home, in your own bed. It is meant to be the place you can go to escape the world. Your bed is your own oasis for peace, tranquility and relaxation. As a sleep consultant with Hästens beds, living in our fast-paced world, I have come to realize that there is very little education or emphasis on sleep. “Sleep is the best exercise,” a coach once told me, something that has stuck with me long after my short-lived athletic career. That is why I have chosen to dedicate my life to helping people understand the luxury of sleep, and how to obtain it naturally. You spend 25 years of your life sleeping. It should be an experience, something you long

for and enjoy. Sleep affects your healing ability, your temper, memory, fitness, learning ability. There are even studies to show that your aging process slows down after getting proper amounts of sleep. You get fewer wrinkles and increase your chances of living a long healthy life. “Wow, this is it! I haven’t felt this level of comfort and support since July 14, 1976, the date of my second back fusion,” a client told me. The same client, now six months later, no longer receives chiropractic care, and thanks his Hästens bed each night. At Hästens we hand craft our beds using only natural materials. Horsehair, cotton, wool and flax fill the beds, free of allergen and chemicals, creating a perfect environment for health and wellbeing. A true bespoke experience, resulting in the ultimate of luxury. “We want to make the world a better place, where you can sleep in the same bed for the rest of your life,” says Jan Ryde, owner of Hästens. In our care, we will ensure we go over your sleeping issues and concerns. We will look at alignment, body pressure, balance, comfort and support. The process is a very unique and personal experience, leaving you with a great

understanding of sleep, and possibly a better understanding of your own body. It almost sounds too good to be true right? Like all the finer things in life, there is a price associated with it. But let me ask, what is great sleep worth to you? More energy and research should be put into your next bed purchase than your next car. We know choosing a bed can be a difficult decision. THE GUESTHOUSE VIENNA LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE HISTORIC AUSTRIAN CAPITAL COMBINES MODERN LUXURY WITH A DEEP APPRECIATION FOR THE CITY’S CULTURAL HERITAGE BY MARK KEAST

legant and sophisticated. The feeling of being in a private apartment in the centre of Vienna, the “city of music”. All come to mind when visiting The Guesthouse Vienna, the newest entrée into the city’s luxury boutique hotel scene. The Guesthouse Vienna, located behind the Vienna State Opera and the famous Albertina museum, opened its doors in early October, with 35 superior and deluxe rooms and four suites on the rooftop. Ours was one of the rooms with a large lounge window (located in rooms from the 2nd to 7th floors) where the guest can curl up with a glass of white wine from the fridge – part of the room rate – and a good book, and still feel like they are part of the bustle of the city going on below you. roast made exclusively for the hotel by Naber Kaffee, the family owned local coffee roaster. The Guesthouse is luxury without gimmickry. The accent is on experience. The people behind hotel think that travellers to Vienna want to get out and explore a city ranked as among the most culturally enriched and livable in the world. “We don’t have some of the normal offerings that a five-star hotel might have, like spas, fitness areas, a pool, sauna or meetings rooms,” says Gabi Rosner, Rooms Division Manager. “We really concentrated on the rooms, making them bigger and more comfortable. Our clients want to be in the city centre. They want to experience the shopping, the art, opera, and music, everything that is all around. That’s what is important.” So coming back to the room means exhausting all luxury options, right down to the details – spacious suites with a cosy living room area, Bang & Olufsen flat-screen TV and audio, large bath and rainforest shower, Molton Brown beauty products and hand-made soap from local manufacturer Wolfgang Lederhaas. Enjoy breakfast all day long in the Brasserie & Bakery. British designer Sir Terence Conran and Conran & Partners lent their hands in creating a unique style to the interior concepts. The chair I sat in to catch up on the news of the day was by Friedrich Kiesler – originally from the 1930s, one of 1,000 recreated by Wittman in cooperation with the Frederick and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation. NAOMI WATTS MAY BE ACCUSTOMED TO RED CARPETS AND SHOWBIZ PARTIES, BUT IS QUICK TO ADMIT SHE’S MOST AT HOME WHEN VENTURING OFF THE BEATEN TRACK BY SHAUN CURRAN

HOLLYWOOD

TRAVEL BUG G

lamour, travel and beautiful actresses are like a holy trinity, and few display the most venerable aspects of all three qualities quite like Naomi Watts. The UK-born, Australian-raised actress resides in New York with her partner, fellow actor Liev Schreiber, and their two children, and has therefore been exposed to more of the planet than many people without the benefit of a jet-setting profession. But as the star of Mulholland Drive, The Impossible and, most recently, Diana, Watts’s career has taken her to far-flung corners of the globe and it is, she says, a perk of the job that she can get to view so much of the world.

60

LUSH LUXURY

WINTER 2013

“I am so glad that acting has given me the opportunity to explore the world,” she begins. “I don’t think I would ever have sampled some of the intense travel experiences I have were it not for my profession.” At 45 years of age, those experiences have now accumulated, leaving Watts in the enviable position of being able to talk about a range of destinations, firstly China. “When we went to China to film The Painted Veil, the filming location – a place called Huang Yao – had to be found by the research team, and they absolutely found the right place. It was the most untouched, serene location I think I have ever been to – wild, beautiful, intensely pretty, and like going back in time.

“I like to close my eyes and wonder what a place would look like one, two, even three centuries beforehand. With Huang Yao, we had that when we opened our eyes. I think all of us felt a sense of duty in respecting this untouched place when we were there. The filming was so serene and we were all sad to leave the place behind, because it had made such an impact on us.” Somewhere closer to what she still calls home is Paris, where Watts spent an elongated amount of time a decade ago shooting Le Divorce. “I loved Paris as well, for the filming of Le Divorce. We were there for two months and really began to invest in the city. It was a film and a location that was really and genuinely difficult to leave behind. Again, it was the culture that grabbed me – the way people behave. And with Paris, the

architecture, the little streets and stairways... they are so inspiring. It’s the kind of place you feel implored to explore, yet you know you will never have enough time to uncover all of the mysteries that lie beneath.” Yet ask Watts for her favourite travel destination, and the answer is definitive: Thailand, where she filmed on location for The Impossible. “That was really a travel experience so much to do with animals and incredible sights. Because I was going to be filming there for so long, we brought the children with us and let them envelop in the sights and the sounds – riding on elephants, seeing things like leopard cats in the wild, watching spinner dolphins in the water. The nature of Thailand was a mystery to me but, like so many other things connected with Asia, a delight to discover.” Not just the sights and sounds, but the food, too. “The cuisine in Thailand was incredible too – incredible for its traditions as much as it flavours. You can see why Thai cuisine is something people get addicted to. There’s also something very

We always try to involve our children in travel. I think it’s fantastic for young people to understand the complexities of the world. And I think you must accept that what they see won’t all be tourist friendly. It’s about growing an appreciation of different cultures, and you’ll never really get that from a textbook.

different about the way the people behave and how they don’t think or feel things exactly the same way as we might in the Western world, for instance. That leads you to question if you are behaving the ‘right’ way or not. Is there even a ‘right’ way? It’s very interesting.” And if Watts has one piece of travel advice to pass on, it is a simple one, namely, that if you have children, include them as much as possible. “We always try to involve our children in travel. I think it’s fantastic for young people to understand the complexities of the world. And I think you must accept that what they see won’t all be tourist friendly. It’s about growing an appreciation of different cultures, and you’ll never X really get that from a textbook.” ●

traight from New York City’s fabled Guggenheim Museum, The Great Upheaval: Masterpieces from the Guggenheim, 1910-1918 comes to Toronto this winter with over 60 paintings and sculptures by the daring leaders of the avant-garde, including Picasso, Chagall, Mondrian and Matisse. Telling the story behind the canvas, the exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario explores the incredible changes in communications, style, politics and technology that made the world new. “The artists of the ‘Great Upheaval’ were game-changers,” says the AGO’s director Matthew Teitelbaum. “They created new forms of artistic expression in the face of turmoil and rapid innovation.” No other time, with the possible exception of our current digital age, has seen such dramatic and swift change.

Almost overnight, life was transformed by women’s suffrage, the machine age, war and the proliferation of radios, x-rays, tanks and telephones. To capture this new pace of life, artists pioneered a range of styles, from Cubism and Futurism to total abstraction. In Germany, the artist Franz Marc was shocking audiences and critics alike with his bold, simplified forms, often distorted and painted in bright colours. Together with August Macke, Vasily Kandinsky and Alexej von Jawlensky, Marc was at the centre of the influential artistic circle Der Blaue Reiter. A painter and printmaker, his expressionistic Yellow Cow, perhaps the most joyful portrait of an animal ever painted, arose from his growing belief in the redemptive power of nature and symbolic colour. His use of blue has been

painters and poets attempting to define what it meant to be modern. It would become for French artists like Robert Delaunay an ideal vehicle for the new Cubist style. Delaunay’s Red Eiffel Tower depicts the tower from various perspectives, revealing a fascination with architecture, space, atmosphere and light. A rejection of careful realism, Cubism had a coterie of famous followers including Picasso, Braque and Albert Gleizes, whose Cubist portrait Head in a Landscape is an excellent example of how these artists combined multiple viewpoints to create geometricized forms – still recognizable, but angular, jarring, even brutalized. In Russia, the self-taught artist Kazimir Malevich was taking inspiration from Russian folk art, icon painting and vivid memories of his childhood in the countryside. In his early works, like Morning in the Village after the Snowstorm, his stylized and compact figures appear frozen in time while going about their daily chores. Their geometric, tubular forms may have been influenced by French artist Fernand Léger, whose work Malevich may have X seen in Moscow or through reproductions. ●

Experts have even suggested that the work can be read as a wedding portrait, since the artist produced it at the time of his second marriage. ERWIN BLUMENFELD (1897-1969) – PHOTOGRAPHS, DRAWINGS, & PHOTOMONTAGES DATES: OCTOBER 15, 2013 TO JANUARY 26, 2014 The exhibition at Jeu de Paume featuring the work of Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969) illustrates the artistic career of one of the great fashion photographers of the 20th century and the socio-political context of the interwar era. A large part of the exhibition is devoted, notably, to the period when, first in Paris, then in New York, Blumenfeld took fashion and advertising photographs. Often minimalist, mainly in colour, these photographs testified to his ceaseless desire to experiment.

TREND-

FROM ROLLNECKS TO TURTLNECKS, WINTER FASHION CHOICES FOR HIM AND HER THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BY YUKI BARTON

40S ACCESSORIES Embrace the 1940s spirit this winter by accessorizing yourself with some statement items. The retro styles have been given an update, with beautiful angular shoes and metal framed handbags. Don’t be afraid to go for pops of colours to accent neutral dresses.

SHEER PANNELLED BLOUSES Basic shirts and blouses get a little update with sheer inserts and panel details complimenting the female silhouette. The look is demure with buttons done up to the neck to add a subtle masculine feel. Add a touch of fun under winter layers.

FEMALE TUXEDO Tuxedo-inspired blazers are the perfect alternative to the traditional business look. This modernized look offers beautiful detailing, and we love contrasting trims and asymmetric shapes. Don’t limit yourself to traditional black either; a playful midnight blue could offer a more fashion-forward look. FOR HER

CASUAL MATCHING SEPARATES These coordinating separates have been seen on the runway for the past three seasons, but hadn’t reached the mass market quite yet. This year, instead of slim pants and shell tops, a more approachable look has emerged with simple pullover tops and matching skirts, to make it a wearable day look.

MOCK NECKS AND TURTLENECKS A practical trend for Canadians, mock and turtlenecks can be worn with almost any outfit. This season, colours range from warm oranges, burgundy and tan, and look best with a cinched waist. Don’t hesitate to layer up with other sweaters, jackets and coats to keep yourself toasty throughout the long winter months.

-SPOTTING FOR HIM BURGUNDY

Dark red was the colour that dominated the catwalks in Europe. Head-to-toe looks were popular on the runway, but if that isn’t your thing, we recommend investing in a warm winter blazer or jacket.

ROLLNECKS This sweater is the essential piece of knitwear for this winter season. Layer up under a tailored winter coat for a look ready to take on the Canadian winter.

NEUTRAL TWEED This season, tweeds were updated to looker cleaner and more contemporary. We love the offbeat look and recommend going for tailored shapes in blacks, whites and greys.

PARKA HYBRIDS These luxe parka hybrids reflect the importance of functional and practical shapes for freezing temperatures, but what makes these coats stand out is their detailing. Subtle quilting, simple utility details, cosy fur-trimmed hoods and funnel necklines all updated this winter are essential, and is sure to keep you warm while looking great.

MILITARY INSPIRED The military trend continues this winter, and offers olive and khaki looks combined with luxurious fabrics. Dress the outerwear up or down by pairing it with knits and casual tops in greys and whites or dress shirts depending on the occasion. FROM WORKING IN THE FORD MOTOR FACTORY IN EAST LONDON TO WOWING GLOBAL AUDIENCES WITH HIS PORTRAYAL OF ARGUABLY THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL BLACK MAN OF A GENERATION. IT HAS BEEN QUITE A RIDE FOR IDRIS ELBA BY SHAUN CURRAN

I

dris Elba is one cool guy. Everything about the 41-year-old exudes the confidence of knowing it, too. From his winning part in The Wire to his star turn in Pacific Rim, and even considering his perhaps less renowned DJ skills mark, the London-born actor might have had to wait until later life to become a household name, but he is now the barometer of “cool”. And nothing could be cooler, or have greater significance for an actor of African origin, to be cast as none other than Nelson Mandela, just as Elba has been in the biopic of the great man. “I’m very, very proud to have the role,” he says. “I can’t put it into words... An iconic person and, for me, it’s

For me, image isn’t so much about a look, it’s about a feeling. It’s that buzz you get when you look in the mirror. And that’s why looking good is all about how you feel inside. You shouldn’t always listen to other people – listen to the voices inside!

a defining moment in my career. It shows me I have set out to achieve something and reached that point, and that’s really powerful for me because I care passionately about what I do. It’s an honour, really, because he is such a great man. “I’ve always felt, and I still feel, that there were other actors out there who could have at least matched me on this. I thought it was a wind-up when I heard the news, and I was in shock for a couple of weeks... it took me that long to accept the job. I never want to think my ego went before me – that’s a bad place to be. But at the same time I guess I needed to give myself credit. Unless I believed I was good enough for this I wouldn’t stand a chance of doing it justice. And when you get an email from Zindzi, Mandela’s daughter, saying how thrilled the family is that you’re doing the role... well, that kind of cements it. “But it’s something I’m going to look back on with great pride and affection, because I never dreamed I would be at a level where I could play Nelson Mandela.” For a working class lad from the poor part of London it is a

commendable achievement, and it only serves to enhance Elba’s cool credentials. He carries about him an effortless sense of style. It is effortless, yes? “It is, I promise,” he smiles. “I’ve worked hard to be this ugly!” Was fashion always an interest, even when young? “Oh, definitely,” he comes back immediately. “Growing up wanting to look good was what it was all about within my group of mates. I wouldn’t say there was competition but it was always good to be seen out looking smart and playing the part, y’know? “That said, I don’t want to go over the top. I’ve always said it, but clothes are what you wear when you’re living; they’re not life itself. “It’s more about who you are than what you wear, but if clothes give you confidence and energy, then you’re a better person for them.” So what does image mean to him? “For me, image isn’t so much about a look, it’s about a feeling. It’s that buzz you get when you look in the mirror. And that’s why looking good is all about how you feel inside. You shouldn’t always listen to other people – listen to the voices

inside!” What colours would he advise people to go for? “Whites, greys and blacks,” he laughs. “They’re the colours that do it for me! I don’t know what it is about those shades – maybe because I’m black, they enable me to blend in or stand out, however I feel. But I’ll rarely stray from those, to be honest, unless there’s a special reason for it.” Any tips for those of us that desperately need them? “I like suits, and I know ties are less fashionable than they were, but contrasting a tie against a shirt can still look good if you get the blend right.” And yet for all his fashion status, Elba is determined that his style never supersedes substance. “I guess the respect is what you do it for, but the knowledge that deep inside you have succeeded will always outweigh praise from others or the assorted trappings that go with this industry. I have always had to fight for what I’ve had in life, so earning something the right way and doing it for myself has always been really X important for me.” ●

BEAUTY THROUGH ART

FUSE HAIR STUDIO IS ALL ABOUT THE PERSONALIZED LUXURY EXPERIENCE BY AMANDA JAMES

a Dolce Vita’ – it's a phrase that embodies all things beautiful, glamorous, and indulgent. So it’s fitting that Fuse Hair Studio chose that as the theme for its two-year anniversary party. The night was all about pampering the faithful clientele of this Forest Hill salon – that and remembering where the vision all began. Fuse was born when Giuseppe JoZo Alpinelli decided to amass his 23 years of experience as a hairstylist with his background in interior design, photography, graphic design and visual art. The result is a stylish salon offering cutting and styling, colouring, and treatment services as well as makeup sessions. The space also doubles as a fully operational photo studio, offering clients tailored portfolio packages that include hair, makeup, and a photo session among several other perks. “I’m an artist and doing hair comes naturally to me,” says Alpinelli. “And that’s why I don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life.” Thanks to a bold and elegant interior design, the Eglinton Avenue salon in Toronto is hard to miss. Showcasing sleek shades of grey on the walls, graceful chandeliers, and a stately stone counter at the main entrance, the true focal points of the space are several large, black, framed mirrors that capture the client sitting in front of them. Fuse also features a fully stocked boutique of products that complements the client’s personal transformation process. Alpinelli is responsible for doing all of the buying when it comes to

Fuse’s [J&A] Collection, which consists of fashion-forward jewellery and accessory pieces. The salon’s beauty product list includes: Moroccan Oil, Paul Mitchell, Matrix, L’Oréal, Rusk, and KMS, to name just a few. When developing the concept behind Fuse, Alpinelli really focused his energy into how the studio could help clients find their individual form of expression. This is why today the studio has successfully cemented a reputation that boasts a top-of-the-line, personalized experience for clients. “I’m always reinventing in the studio,” he says, “clients always change and grow, and I grow with them in the process.” Guests of the event were treated to a sexy, La Dolce Vita-inspired makeover. The signature look for makeup included a sexy, smoky eye and a rich, red lip. Guests were photographed by the talented Jason Stead against a romantic backdrop of Italy. In honour of this occasion, the team behind Fuse came together to create a short film called La Dolce Vita, depicting a romantic rendezvous between two beautiful lovers played by Nicole Zagar and Evan Spergel. “I was inspired by the original 1960s film, La Dolce Vita, from Federico Fellini,” says Alpinelli. “I loved that it was a love story and I wanted to do a reenactment of an old but new love story. I thought it would be perfect to give it a modern twist.”

Zagar, a cosmetologist by trade, and Spergel, an up-and-coming Canadian actor, were chosen by Alpinelli because he felt they were ideal in capturing the old Hollywood glamour that he had envisioned for this film. Shot in black and white, the film features a dapper young man pursuing a lovely lady after spotting her by a fountain. His efforts lead to a passionate kiss between the two and a happy ending for all. During the night of the event, stills from the movie set were framed and displayed around the salon for clients to view. “What’s very important for me is that I have the right supporters who are here 100 per cent with their art, and to watch me grow from an idea to something greater,” Alpinelli says. “So X far, so good.” ●

THE PURSUIT OF BEAUTY WERE THE GOOD OLD DAYS REALLY ALL THAT GOOD? B Y P E T ER W. B RAY, MD, MSC , F RC S(C )

W

ould you rub crocodile dung on your face if you believed it would reduce wrinkles? How about some toxic lead compounds to improve your complexion? I thought not. Yet hundreds of years ago affluent anti-agers enthusiastically pasted and painted themselves with these and many other unsavory products. These creams, potions and elixirs often ranged from poisonous to putrid and were almost universally ineffective. Body-shape modification procedures were a similarly dodgy proposition. We are tempted to think of our modern day aesthetic obsession as more intense than any other time in history. This impression is probably justified given that we now have more access to cosmetic interventions and manipulations than ever before. Not only are there more methods to tweak and tighten our flesh but there is really no body area spared from intense scrutiny; the

72

LUSH LUXURY

WINTER 2013

bright lights of the operating room now routinely illuminate areas where once the sun did not shine. While the availability and capability of cosmetic treatments has never been greater the human desire to engage in such practices is nothing new. People have pushed, pulled, and squeezed their forms toward the prevailing aesthetic ideal for millennia. In fact our modern beauty and anti-aging practices seem downright tame in comparison to many of those from centuries past. Until recently our ability to safely perform major surgical modifications to living flesh was limited. Old-school aesthetic transformation of the body was typically achieved by squishing or constricting it in some way. The head has long been a target of the latter technique with the intent to create more culturally desirable shapes. The soft structure of the infant skull lends itself well to moulding over time, typically achieved by binding the newborn’s head between wooden boards. Eventually the bones solidify and the boards were removed, yielding a permanently transformed noggin. The Mayans favoured a flattened head shape whereas a Congo woman would have been considered beautiful if sporting an elongated version. This basic strategy, use of an external apparatus to progressively manipulate natural growth, has been widely employed for various body areas. In certain parts of Asia and Africa it is the neck, rather than the head, that has been the subject of this technique over the centuries. With successive addition of metal rings around the neck it elongates, giraffe-like, over time. Yet an increase in size has not always been the aesthetic goal of body modification. The Chinese practice of foot binding, now fortunately historical, was intended to create a tiny, delicate foot shape. It is perhaps not surprising that the act of walking subsequently became difficult or impossible. The allure of a culturally “ideal” appearance has often outweighed the risks associated with its attainment. Corsets worn in the Victorian era are an additional example where form trumped function. The tight binding from the corset helped achieve an impossibly narrow waist and the hourglass figure so highly desirable at the time. Broken ribs, constricted lungs, compressed

innards, and restricted bloodflow were additional companion sequelae to the use of this contraption. Reduced supply of oxygen to the brain resulted in the frequent tendency to faint. Or was it “swoon” in those days? No matter, those little hand fans and portable supply of smelling salts helped save the day. Other topical beauty treatments have involved the curious use of fecal matter. While bizarre, at least these compounds were non-toxic. In ancient Greece and Rome crocodile dung was the favoured ingredient, incorporated into facial masks with the belief that it would reverse the aging process. While certain physical attributes fade in and out of emphasis over time some have remained a subject of aesthetic focus across cultures and many generations. The lips are a good example of such an area, where “bigger is better” has consistently been the rule. In the developed world use of hyaluronic acid fillers has become routine and is fortunately safe and effective, although often overdone. Some ancient traditions, hundreds of years old, still persist into the modern day in other countries. The use of “lip plates" is such an enhancement. For the Suma and Mursi women in Ethiopia the lip modification process begins in childhood. A small piercing is made in the lower lip, much like an ear piercing. Circular plates of progressively larger sizes are inserted over time resulting in profound stretch by adulthood. The human desire to engage in body modification is likely as old as the human race itself and, in my own opinion, will never disappear. But the manner with which this desire is expressed has been and will continue to be in a state of flux. Specific body areas, whether eyes, breasts, biceps, abs, or legs, will come in and out of cultural focus. The preferred characteristics of a given area will also change ranging from “big” to “small” and vice-versa. Perhaps most encouraging is that the available techniques used for achieving these changes will continue to improve, becoming ever more safe and effective. Eventually our current beautification practices may seem as quaint and curious as the X crocodile dung of yesteryear. ●

SHOOT FROM THE HIP – THAT’S WHAT BERNIE ECCLESTONE IS KNOWN FOR. THE FORMULA ONE BOSS TALKS BY SHAUN CURRAN

F

ew things go together as seamlessly as wealthy extravagance and Formula One racing, and no one individual epitomizes everything about the two quite like Bernie Ecclestone, as Lush Luxury discovered. Ecclestone is the straight-talking, no-nonsense head of the Formula One racing empire, an empire that the 82-year-old, worth an estimated $4.2 billion, was instrumental in building from what he describes as “a very amateurish show that nobody cared or wanted to take responsibility for”. It’s now a multi-billion dollar operation and the sport’s popularity has never been greater. A former driver himself, albeit one with limited

success, the UK-born business magnate is now one of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs, rubbing shoulders with the rich, famous and beautiful. He is hailed as the man who transformed F1 into one of the greatest shows on Earth by combining acute business sense with a healthy dose of arrogance and belligerence. Not that Bernie Ecclestone’s life has been one without controversy. His shoot-from-the-hip mentality has meant he is never far from a quarrel, while his private life – the entrepreneur has been married three times (including to a women 28 years his junior) and has two tabloid attention-

hogging daughters – would keep any man on his toes. His latest dispute, the bribery charges brought against him in Germany over the sale of shares in F1 that could result in jail, still linger. His response to that: “These challenges come and go. Would we rather not busy ourselves with all this agro and all this fuss? Of course. But when you’re living a life with the accelerator pedal to the floor these obstacles will come at you thick and fast. “Hindsight is a wonderful thing and we all look back sometimes and wish we’d done some things differently, but this is the way I’ve lived my life, and I’m mighty proud of that. And when I believe I am innocent, I will protest that innocence vehemently. From the way he talks, it’s clear this is a man with little grasp on the concept of fear. “I agree with that. The fact I don’t really sense fear could well be one of my greatest assets... or strengths. I won't be threatened or intimidated by anyone and I've always been prepared to do what is necessary to defend my interests.” Such a stolid yet firm attitude undoubtedly helped Ecclestone seize control of the F1 machine in 1972. “It did. At that time, the teams just wanted to drive their cars and try to win races. It wasn't good for the drivers, the teams, or the fans the way things were going. You need to have proper management if you're going to move forward. I tried to do what I thought was good for the sport and also what seemed necessary.” A man who enjoys the finer things in life (as

only the proud owner of a 187-foot yacht can), Ecclestone has a particular interest in wristwatches, and will always be seen sporting a lavish timepiece. Why so? “It’s a statement, isn’t it? A timepiece and a statement, and a very beautiful object. I’ve always thought the synergy with F1 has been very nice, particularly in the way Hublot and Rolex create these works of art. It’s understanding the idea of rarity and limited availability. There’s a lot of F1 in that – we are not mass market in terms of who actually gets the chance to sit in a racing car. That, in itself, creates its own image. I guess it’s something you grow into over the years. Fashions come and go, but a quality wristwatch is a pretty firm constant across the decades.” It made perfect sense, then, when Ecclestone brokered a deal with Rolex to become an official sponsor of Formula One. “Yes, and it was a good move. Rolex has always had a strong association with sport and it seemed a very natural progression to bring them back to the motor racing stable. It is a brand that speaks absolute quality at the very highest level. It has truly global prestige and the name is a synonym for class. It’s been a very smooth transition for us and we’re very pleased.” The deal with Rolex was one of many Ecclestone has struck over the years. When did he realise he had such a knack for driving such a hard bargain? “It's like being a singer or an artist,” he continues. “You're born with certain gifts and you use them as best you can in life. You begin to learn and recognise that you have certain skills and aptitudes and apply them to carry you forward. I don't have any talent as an artist but I do have an awareness for business and what you need to

bring to that world. It helps to know what you're good at.” As you would expect from such an uncompromising businessman, Ecclestone’s main focus has been his work, often at the expense of his family. His two daughters, Tamara and Petra, are every bit as glamorous as you would expect of the offspring of a the fourth richest Briton, and have become targets for the tabloid press, as anybody who spends $20 million on a wedding, as Petra did last summer in Italy, is bound to become. Not that Ecclestone is anything but proud of the pair. “Petra – she's into producing these clutch bags (Stark handbags) and doing very well with that. And Tamara is doing an incredible line in hair-care products that is being sold in major stores all over the world. They're both turning out very well. They also do a lot of charity work a lot of which you don't hear about.” Yet Ecclestone readily admits that his workload meant he didn’t see as much of his daughters’ childhood as he should have. “I didn't devote as much time to them as I would have liked. I never neglected my daughters - quite the opposite - but I suppose I could have and should have spent more time with them. I have no regrets though about the amount of work I put into the sport. This is what I needed to do with my life. But when they're no longer there for you to look after you always think how you could have done things a bit differently.” Despite that admission and his advancing years, there is no sign whatsoever of the 82year-old retiring any time soon. Will there ever come a point when he relinquishes the power he worked so hard to earn? “I don't think I will ever need to hand over my job to someone else. I’ll keep doing it until the day I die, and when that time does come, there

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and we all look back sometimes and wish we’d done some things differently, but this is the way I’ve lived my life, and I’m mighty proud of that. And when I believe I am innocent, I will protest that innocence vehemently. The fact I don’t really sense fear could well be one of my greatest assets... or strengths. I won't be threatened or intimidated by anyone and I've always been prepared to do what is necessary to defend my interests. 73

As much as 420 kg has been trimmed from the Sports’ body thanks to an extensive use of aluminum in the construction of the vehicle’s body and suspension. That also means it’s a little easier on the gas. Then there’s the muscle – the V8 Supercharged means 0-100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds on top of a handling package that puts the Sport in a class of its own. Sport comes with four engine options – a 190kW 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel, a 215kW SDV6 diesel, a new 250kW 3.0litre V6 and a 375kW 5.0-litre V8 (340hp and 332 lb-ft of torque). ew luxury automobiles on the market have the unique combination of technology, power and style that the Cadillac Escalade possesses. That is well-established. However with the 2015 edition, it’s the changes to the interior of the car that enthusiasts will notice the most. New levels of luxury combine with the latest in technology offerings. Luxury SUV aficionados have high standards when it comes to comfort. With the new Escalade, seats were engineered to be more comfortable, sculpted in a fashion that accentuates the elegance of the interior. Cut-and-sewn upholstery and trim materials are some of the other features that separate the Escalade from the rest of the pack. The CUE infotainment system is Cadillac’s voice recognition system with touch controls. It’s state-of-the-art, similar to popular tablet devices or mobile phones. The SUV holds eight people. BLACK TIE AFFAIR

IT WAS A NIGHT OF SOPHISTICATION. AND IT WAS ALL FOR A GREAT CAUSE. BY MARLON DURRANT

L

ast month I had the pleasure of co-hosting an event with the Blacktie Society – sponsored by Minskaya, the ultra premium vodka – called “A Room for a Gentleman”. As you can probably guess, the theme of the night was black tie. The room was filled with well-dressed men, all outfitted by Md – classic cut tuxedos, some shawl lapels, some peak lapels. French cuff shirts were a “must”. Cuffwear ensured that everyone’s formal cufflinks fit the occasion. Minskaya was a great partner because their brand is all about a gentleman’s aspirations for betterment and finer lifestyle. That’s what Md is about, when discussing Bespoke Style. It’s not just about the clothes you are wearing, or that glass of vodka in your hand. It’s an attitude, a high level of confidence that you project. It’s how it makes you feel, out in the world. All of us lounged in luxurious furniture by GH Johnson. Epuffer cigars allowed us to experience the joys of smoking indoors. All of this was a precursor to another black tie event hosted by my friend Spider Jones called “Fight For Youth”, a boxing championship where Md’s clients were seated ringside. Andrew Krystal was the MC. It was great see boxing legends George Chuvalo and Razor Ruddock out at the event. Toronto city councillor Giorgio Mammoliti spoke highly of the charity and expressed great interest in creating similar opportunities for underprivileged youth. X Black tie never felt so good. ●
