Greetings and welcome to the Yukon Film Society’s 12th Annual Available Light Film Festival. Over the next few days, members of the public and Yukon’s film industry will enjoy a beautifully programmed festival that has something for everyone – from northern documentaries to foreign films. At the Media Industry Forum, many visiting industry professionals are generously sharing their time and talent with the local film and media industry. In its fifth year, the forum will again provide Yukon filmmakers with opportunities for professional development and to engage directly with leading producers, artists, funders, and broadcasters. Film and media is an important part of Yukon’s economy, and the Available Light Film Festival is a key event for both Yukon filmmakers’ individual development and for increasing the profile of Yukon’s film industry. Through the Yukon Film & Sound Commission, the Government of Yukon is pleased to support this event. Emily Alden is Vice President of Production and Development with Pacific Northwest
Pictures (Vancouver/Los Angeles). She began her career at Raven West Films and went on to form her own company, All Done Productions. Alden produced the Carl Bessai films Unnatural & Accidental and Sisters & Brothers as well as award-winning shorts. Alden is the executive producer of Michael Melski’s Charlie Zone, and is producing After The Wedding.
Tom Alexander is the Director of Theatrical Releasing for Mongrel Media Distribution.
Before joining Mongrel in 2001, Tom worked in various capacities with Alliance Atlantis Communications, Famous Players, and the Toronto International Film Festival Group, among other organizations. He holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business in Marketing, and Arts & Media Administration.
Dennis Allen is a Whitehorse-based award-winning filmmaker, a published writer, and a recorded songwriter. He inherited his story-telling chops from his father of Inupiaq Eskimo origin, and from his mother, Order of Canada recipient and Vuntut Gwichin Elder, Bertha Allen. After flunking out of high school, Allen hustled pool, trapped muskrats, bar-tended, rough-necked, busked, and dug graves. His documentary, CBQM, won the Alanis Obomsawin Best Documentary Award at the ImagineNative Film and Video Festival. Carl Bessai is a film director, producer, screenwriter and cinematographer whose most
notable films include Cole (2009), Repeaters (2010), Emile (2003), Mothers & Daughters (2008) and Fathers & Sons (2010). His award winning feature films have won international critical acclaim at numerous festivals including Sundance, Berlin, and Toronto. Carl is here at ALFF with the film No Clue starring writer and comedian Brent Butt.
Stéphane Cardin has over fifteen years of experience in the film and television industry. He is Vice President of Industry and Public Affairs with the Canada Media Fund. Mr. Cardin maintains an ongoing dialogue with industry and government stakeholders, leads the development of policies and programs, and reinforces the positioning of the CMF within the industry. He has worked for the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office (CAVCO) and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Lauren Davis is the feature film officer at Telefilm Canada’s Western Region office in
Vancouver. Lauren joined Telefilm in 1998. Over the last 14 years, she has held a number of management positions within the television, feature film and business-process management teams. Most recently, she worked in the Information, Performance and Risk unit as Director, Performance and Quality Management, a position to which she was appointed in June 2009.
Gina Dineen is manager of the bravoFACTUAL and bravoFACT programs operated by
Bell Media. She will be at ALFF Media Industry Forum to represent these short film financing opportunities. Gina graduated from York University in 1983 with a BFA in film arts. She is the Founder and Programmer of the Cabbagetown Short Film and Video Festival.
Lesley Grant is Vice President of Development at White Pine Pictures in Toronto. She
is personally responsible for building a slate of original dramatic and factual entertainment programming therein. Prior to joining White Pine Pictures, Lesley was Director of Development at Barna-Alper Productions and Shaftesbury Films.

Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs is a 20-year-old actress from the Mohawk Nation of
Kahnawake. Jacobs has been featured in the video game Assassin's Creed II and television shows The Dead Zone, Being Human, Mohawk Girls and Exploding Sun. Kawennáhere is best known for The Blanketing (2013), South of the Moon (2008) and Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013).
Maureen Levitt is Creative Development Representative for Super Channel in Western
Canada. Until 2006 Maureen was Western Regional Manager and Commissioning Editor for Vision TV. She worked with regional producers from all over Canada to develop and pre-sale a large portfolio of documentary and some drama. She developed the first mentorship program within Vision TV with Vancouver Women in Film.
Siobhan McCarthy is an actor turned producer. She is a founder of the Absolut Theatre
Company, founder/partner of Brown Eyed Girls Productions, CEO of Blyssful Productions and worked for the Vancouver International Film Festival Trade Forum. She is a bold, innovative, transdisciplinary artist and educator who is constantly devising new and original theatre, film and performance art.
Don McKellar has become a Canadian screen icon. He appeared in Atom Egoyan's films
The Adjuster (1991) and Exotica (1994). He collaborated with Francois Girard, authouring Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1992), and the Academy Award winning The Red Violin (1998). McKellar’s directorial debut, Last Night (1998), won the Prix de la Jeunesse at the Cannes Film Festival. He created the cult classic television series Twitch City along with Bob Martin. Don was story editor on the CBC TV series Northern Town, shot in the Yukon in 2006. Don’s most recent film is The Grand Seduction.
Vincent Morisset is a digital media director from Montréal who is always looking for new ways to tell stories. His projects have included Bla Bla, Colour Blind Clyde, Inni (the definitive live experience) with Sigur Rós and several projects with the band Arcade Fire. His many awards include: Webby Award (Net Art Category), SXSW Interactive Champion (Art Category), Libera Award (Best Independent Music Video) and the Japan Media Art Award. Geoff Pevere has a long career in reviewing, writing, broadcasting and teaching. He was
the host of CBC Radio’s Prime Time, Film International on TVOntario, and co-hosted Rogers

Television’s Reel to Real. He reviewed movies for twelve years on CTV’s Canada AM and at the Toronto Star for ten. Pevere has also published several books and is a regular film critic for The Globe and Mail.
Ellen Pittleman is founder of Los Angeles-based Hybrid Entertainment. Ellen has been building and acquiring libraries for independent producers and studios to develop across multiple platforms for her entire professional career. Before launching Hybrid Entertainment, Pittleman was Senior Vice President, International Co-Productions and Worldwide Acquisitions for Paramount Pictures. Martha Rans has over 18 years of expertise as an intellectual property lawyer and
copyright educator. Her Vancouver-based law practice specializes in intellectual property, nonprofits, charity law, incorporation, governance, privacy, employment, labour law, and human rights. Martha is the Legal Director of the Artists' Legal Outreach, which provides advice, information and education to thousands of BC's creators.
Lisa Richardson's career in film and television spans over 30 years. In 2004 Lisa partnered with Tom Rowe and Matthew O’Connor to form Reunion Pictures. Since then, Lisa has produced the Showtime series Masters of Horror, and also co-executive produced the series Masters of Science Fiction and executive produced Journey to the Centre of the Earth and the sci-fi mini-series Dragonsteel. She is executive producing the hit series Continuum, now in its third season for Showcase. Tina Schliessler immigrated to Canada from Germany at the age of 17, wherein she attended Emily Carr University. Her first student film landed her an animation series for German TV, and she produced Bushwhack in collaboration with writer/poet Heather Haley. Tina has collaborated on award-winning documentaries with her partner, director Charles Wilkinson. Their most recent brainchild is the feature documentary Oil Sands Karaoke. Teri Snelgrove is a graduate of Emily Carr University. She has worked as a freelance
director and producer on projects such as In Her Footsteps (Celebrating BC Women in Sport), on permanent display at the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, Jan Derbyshire’s first short film Sanity for Beginners and Marie Clements’ Jesus Indian. She currently works as an Associate Producer at the National Film Board of Canada. 11

Karen Vallevand is the Area Manager for CBC North in Whitehorse. CBC supports independent TV producers through a Regional Programming Development Fund which is administered by CBC regions across the country. The Fund helps develop music, documentary and comedy programming. The content is broadcast in many regions in prime-time on Saturdays throughout the summer, and is also broadcast nationally on Absolutely Canadian. Kirk Tougas is one of Canada’s foremost documentary cinematographers. Working with independent producers, broadcasters, and the National Film Board, he has shot on location around the world, notably on all of Nettie Wild's documentaries. Films and videos he has worked on have received over 65 international festival prizes. One of Kirk’s most recent projects is Whitehorse-based director Dennis Allen’s Crazywater. John Walker is a renowned Halifax-based documentary director and cinematographer. Walker’s work defies conventional subjects and approaches: his provocative film Passage (ALFF 2009) challenged the conventions of documentary film by combining the process of making a fiction film about Arctic explorer John Rae with documentary explorations about Rae's legacy. He has received many awards and nominations for his films, which include: A Drummer's Dream (ALFF 2011), Men Of The Deeps, Strand, A Winter Tan and Arctic Defenders. Werner Walcher is a Whitehorse-based producer/director and president of the production company Fresh From The Yukon Inc. His work combines the beauty of the North with worldwide socially relevant stories, which is attracting national and international audiences. Werner’s documentaries have been broadcast on OMNI TV, APTN, CBC North and CBC Country Canada. Charles Wilkinson is at ALFF with his film Oil Sands Karaoke. He has worked at
sound design, picture editing and music scoring. Prior to graduating from Simon Fraser in Vancouver, his film Tiers… a Story of the Penitentiary won numerous international awards. Charles went on to direct 6 independent dramatic feature films as well as writing the book The Working Film Director and directing the ALFF 2012 film Peace Out.

Pitching 101 All successful projects start with the creator telling someone about their idea. In this workshop participants will learn how to best represent their projects verbally, in writing and with audiovisual material, with an objective to finding a producer partner and taking their project forward. This opening session is a must for those looking to be involved in one-on-one meetings with visiting industry professionals. Legal issues, Copyright, and the Media Industry This information session will look at basic legal agreements for various aspects of the media production industry. Vancouver-based intellectual property lawyer Martha Rans will discuss contracts, story option rights, and co-production agreements. She will also discuss how the development of alternative media distribution has changed the legal landscape, and how this relates to new copyright legislation in Canada. Martha will answer questions, and will also participate in the one-onone sessions to follow. Facilitated by Mark Pindera.

In addition to alternative media distribution opportunities there’s an upsurge in fee-for-service distribution, particularly in the US. It’s changing the game and empowering independent filmmakers. Tom Alexander (Mongrel Media) represents the biggest distributor of independent and art-house films in Canada. Screenwriting Master Class with Don McKellar Introduced by Daniel Janke. Actor, director, writer Don McKellar is a great believer in the power of story, and in telling one’s own stories. In this snap-shot of the writer’s process he’ll share some of his ideas for transforming a story to script. Topics touched on will include the use of archetype, allegory, and structure. We’ll hear anecdotes from his work on Twitch City, Last Night, The Red Violin or The Grand Seduction. This is a great opportunity to gain insights into McKellar’s trademark re-jigging of reality through story and character creation.
