LEICHHARDT TERRACE HOUSE

- project@sago design Single House

Leichhardt, Sydney 2019, DA 43m * 7m

This project is a knock-down-rebuild house for a young family of four. Although the brief is not particularly ambitious, it does not make the design process an easy task. The site is very typical Inner west - long narrow site, conservation area, stormwater arrangement, tree protection, overshadow, overlooking, etc. The architect is hit by most of the constrains that one can get, which on the other hand could mean the house is naturally shaped by itself and what it is left is straightforward problem-solving. Having said that, it does not mean the architect has forfeited the ambition of a quality design. Thanks to the site orientation, the site is facing due north towards the rear garden, allowing for large openings and playful design with light. Though the roof form is kept simple for cost saving(can’t have too many box gutters and steel), design focus is shifted to shaping the internal atmosphere. Light well, high window, curved ceiling, pergola, various design elements are introduced to let in, reflect, diffuse, filter and fine tune this gorgeous north light. On first floor, a green roof planter box is integrated into the design. This green barrier does a few things: privacy screening between bedroom and neighbour; filtering the large roof area below; the chamfered angle underneath allows installation of high window of the space under, introducing light to the front of the house; the off-form concrete ceiling is also a playful touch to the overall crisp palette of the house.

TORQUAY HOUSE

- project@buck&simple. House & Granny Flat Torquay, Victoria 2017, Currently Under Construction 32m * 23m

Located in a new subdivided land in Torquay within walking distance to local beaches, the site is a perfect fit for a chill holiday vibe. The brief is simply a house that can comfortably accommodate a retired mother and a big family that would only visit the house during holiday times. With this in mind, the architect has envisaged a house that consists of two wings, a main house and a secondary granny flat, that are ambiguously connected and isolated via various design tricks. The central garden in between the two wings acts as a buffer zone as well as a junction. It does not only connect different part of the house but also provides an informal access, contributing to the chill holiday vibe. In regard to materiality and form, it starts from a practical perspective. Torquay has a cooler and less sunny climate than Sydney. Thermal mass and solar access have been the most prioritized driving forces. Concrete slab and blockworks are used as much as possible, though half of the house is timber frame for cost saving purpose. Reverse veneer wall is also proposed to achieve good thermal performance. Unlike in Sydney where deep eaves are seen everywhere, the eave in this house is minimum in order to let in as much limited sun as possible. It is fun working with different climate and seeing how different a house is shaped accordingly.

Stable HOUSE

- Project@Beverley GARLICK ARCHITECT

The client of this project is the owner of a big house in Leichhardt. She has engaged the architect to make good and convert an existing heritage stable at the rear of the land into a house for her daughter. The stable will be renovated to accommodate a semi-outdoor courtyard, a laundry, a bathroom and a bedroom upstairs. Though seems a bit strange, what grouped together are relatively inactive spaces. A new living-dining-kitchen addition is proposed next to the stable, where there is better solar access and better connection to the garden. One thing is worth noting in the design is the semi-outdoor courtyard in the stable. As the existing brick wall of the stable is double brick without a cavity in-between, the interior will be lined with stud and gyprock for insulation and water-proofing. This will conceal the existing timber structure and brickwork of the stable, and there comes idea of a semi-outdoor space where everything rafter is exposed and the original impression of the stable is retained.

VAUCLUSE GARDEN

- PROJECT@SAGO DESIGN

This project is renovation of a big mansion in Vaucluse, the architect was working closely with many different aspects, builder, structural engineer, interior designer, etc. throughout the whole design process. One of the main part the architect is involved is the external work at the rear garden, adding a few pergola structure and transforming a strip of land next to an existing tennis court into a swimming pool and pool patio. The level change of the site is dramatic, though adding to the difficulty in designing the structure, it gives ground to the intertwining of spaces and allows a lot of moments of interest to happen.

BIRD HOUSE FOR THE SWALLOW ‘ Good-bye, dear prince! ‘ he murmured, ‘ Will you let me kiss your hand?’ …… ‘It is not to Egypt that I am going,’ Said the Swallow. ‘I am going to the House of Death. Death is the brother of Sleep, is he not?’ And he kissed the Happy Prince on the lips, and fell down dead at his feet. Rereading the Happy Prince as an adult, apart from the feeling of sadness, I now have a more thorough comprehension of the nature of this tragedy. A lot that the Happy Prince has given to the civil, yet he never asks for anything back. Such unbalance of receive and giving is inherently unsustainable, ultimately leading to a tragic ending. The tale would not have made sense if the tragedy were to be resolved. With the disparity of rich and poor, and the indifferent utilitarianism of the mayor criticized, it also has to be acknowledged that the kindness of the Happy Prince is imperfect. Myself being someone who happens to know something about building, this design is a little dream that based on my own professional capability. This is a bird house for the Swallow, with a tiny wish that the Swallow and the Happy Prince could spend the winter together.

BIRD House FOR THE SWALLOW

DESIGN INTENT

| Design Statement | The design intent is to simply to create a cozy home for Swallow to survive the winter. The fundamental consideration is the capability to resist snow and cold. There are four layers of the skin, from the outermost to the inner most, respectively colorbond steel, water-proof membrane, insulation, and internal lining. The internal lining is to be made from paper due to its flexibility in shape and its producing less odor. The bird house is to be equipped with a mini solar system, storing and transferring the solar energy for night-time heating. The form of the Swallow House is an imitation of bird nest, aiming to enhance both physical and mental comfort via similarity. The house slightly tapers and tilts to wards the top to avoid the penetration of rain and snow . The top is covered with a vent, allowing air as well as sound to go through, and therefore the Swallow can still talk to the Happy Prince while the door is shut. The design of the bottom stand is borrowed from bird feet, adding to the lightness of the bird house. Besides, in order to release this confined space, Double glazing will be utilized for the door to preserve vision and thermal performance simultaneously.
