The recent announcement of the budget allocated for the Palarong Pambansa from the public schools, has sparked controversy among students.
While the government boasts about the funding for the event, the reality for the athletes participating in the competition is far from impressive. The recent announcement of the budget allocated for the Palarong Pambansa from the public schools, has sparked controversy among students. While the government boasts about the funding for the event, the reality for the athletes participating in the competition is far from impressive.
The allocation of a meager 50 pesos per day for athletes participating in the Palarong Pambansa at Estipona National High School unveils a distressing truth, the
lack of substantial support for athletes. Beyond the mere act of disbursing funds lies the critical evaluation of whether these resources are sufficient to meet the needs and expenses faced by athletes who are as equally drivers to their craft. The scenes unfolding in public schools across provinces paint a grim picture of the challenges faced by athletes, with a daily allowance of 50 pesos for the Provincial Meet falling drastically short of meeting even basic necessities. One major consequence of inadequate transportation for public schools during provincial meets is the potential exclusion of students from
lower-income backgrounds. These students may already face barriers to participation in extracurricular activities due to financial constraints, and the lack of transportation further exacerbates this issue. As a result, talented and motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds may miss out on the chance to showcase their skills and talents on a larger stage, limiting their opportunities for recognition and advancement.
Moreover, the absence of reliable transportation can also impact the morale and motivation of students and coaches. The inability to attend provincial meets due
to transportation issues can be demoralizing for students who have worked hard to qualify for these events. It can also be disheartening for coaches who have invested time and effort in training their teams, only to face logistical challenges that prevent them from competing at the provincial level. This can lead to feelings of frustration, disappointment, and disillusionment among both students and coaches.
In contrast, events like the Bulacan Provincial Athletic Meet showcase robust support for student-athletes, emphasizing the importance of adequate resources and infrastructure for sporting events. The disparity in support highlights the need for equitable opportunities and resources across all schools
participating in athletic meets.
The Palarong Pambansa is not just a one-time event it is an opportunity for young athletes to showcase their skills and potentially secure a spot in the national team.
However, with such a small budget, these athletes are faced with the daunting task of competing at a high level while also worrying about their daily needs.
It is imperative that we shift our focus away from mere token gestures towards tangible and meaningful support for our athletes. Adequate funding is not just about financial assistance, it is about empowering athletes to excel, providing them with the resources they need to thrive and succeed.
As long as we do not dispose this issue, fairness will never arise
