LIEcence to KILL
Red tagging in the Philippines has severely harmed many filipinos, including journalists who are unjustly accused of being against the government and are therefore subject to threats, unlawful surveillance, or even unlawful killing.
Red tagging intimidates freedom of expression. This practice serves as a license to kill given that this regime involves labeling individuals or groups as communist rebels or sympathizers without due process, which has led to widespread fear and intimidation towards Filipinos. Thís environment of fear not only undermines democratic values but also restricts the open exchange of ideas and perspectives essential for a diverse society.
Many argue that red tagging serves as a way to discipline Filipinos or Filipino youth who seems to have so much violent insights about the Philippine government. Their actions are justified as a way of “bringing peace” upon the protests and activisms expressed by Filipino citizens.
However, besides of being a way to silence criticisms, red tagging also debunks reasoned ideas. In 2020, the Philippine government accused a community journalist named Frenchie Mae Cumpio of being part of New People’s Army (NPA) after expressing opinions and possible solutions about the current crisis’s and management of the Philippine government within
the country. Her opinions was seen as a way of rebelling against the government which was then proven as a false accusation after not finding enough evidences.

Freedom of expression is continuously threatened by a competitive authoritarian regime, according to the Human Rights Foundation’s (HRF) political regime analysis. In order to gain control, the Philippine government only see the absurd usage of restrictions and policies against activist and journalist as the primarily way to ignore the rising concerns within the Filipino people.
In the Philippines, red tagging is not just a matter of political strategy but a systematic way to silence dissent and control the narrative. By targeting journalists and activists, the government aims to create a climate of fear and self-
This not only violates the rights of individuals but also undermines the principles of democracy and the rule of law. Red tagging i a gross violation of human rights. Red tagging also has significant impact upon youth or young journalists. The fear created can lead them to censor themselves and avoid stories critical of those in power. This can limit the public’s access to important information and perspectives. Additionally, red tagging can cause psychological harm, including stress, anxiety, and trauma.
where critical voices are suppressed, and alternative perspectives are marginalized. In the long run, this can have harmful outcomes on the development and well-being of the Filipino people, as it limits their ability to address pressing issues and find sustainable solutions.
“Filipinos are not silent but instead are silenced; if action and progress are not seen now, then when?”
In extreme cases, it can even result in physical harm or harassment, forcing young journalists to leave their profession or go into hiding. This whole situation contributes to a culture of silence and conformity,
As journalists continuously voice their insights within the country’s crises, they are silenced by this ridiculous way of gaining control over Filipinos, red tagging. An objective news report, public information, and holding people in authority accountable are the roles of journalists. By spreading fear and intimidation, red-tagging sabotages these efforts by making it more difficult for journalists to carry out their duties which can also undermine their credibility and impact their ability to report freely and safely
Red tagging poses a significant threat to every Filipinos specifically in the aspect of speaking and expressing within freedom. Filipinos are not silent but instead are silenced,if action and progress is not seen now, then when?

Lost for cost
The education department has the biggest slice of pie when it comes to budgeting, but why are teachers still forced to bust their own pockets to deliver quality education?
Well, I guess all of it got lost, so they now have to pay the full cost.
This is a persistent problem occurring in almost every department of governance in the Philippines. Money like a pie is flowing through different hands and is slowly cut in slices until its completely lost in the abyss of endless hunger of corruption. This leaves the actual teachers and those who are in need of that education with barely any. Educators are constantly
considered heroes for sacrificing their own pockets, which could possibly be for their families, but are being supplied for the betterment of education.
Oftentimes, in order to provide the quality education their students deserve they’re forced to buy their own appliances and school supplies for their students.
Moreover, the lack of transparency and accountability in the allocation of educational funds perpetuates a culture of corruption. It is crucial to address these systemic issues to ensure that the budget allocated to the education

This includes not only increasing budget allocations but also implementing strict measures to curb corruption, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and fostering a culture of accountability. Only through such reforms can the education sector truly thrive and for quality education truly be attained with nothing lost more than its cost.

CALLFORACTION
Remedy of poor Literacy
by:ALMYRADELOSSANTOSIn a country that’s in desperate need of solution towards the poor literacy of students, Department of Education’s (DepEd) new Catch-up Friday series as the new hope for every Filipino learner.
What prompted DepEd to implement the Catch-up Friday program? Not a long time ago, Deped released a survey stating that 76 percent of students in the Philippines lack of basic competencies in learning. In addition, the result of the Programme of International Student Assessment states that the Philippines is one of the countries weakest in math, science, and reading comprehension.
The new Catch-up Friday program is one of the learning recovery plans DepEd plans to achieve. in this agenda, every Friday is designated for reading practices and activities that aims to improve literacy of every student.
As a student in senior high school, it saddens me to see that there are students my age who struggles in reading. I can’t help but imagine how hard it must’ve been for them to learn during the two years of lockdowns and closures of schools.
But now that the new catch-up Friday is here, I feel assured that improvements towards the poor literacy of Filipino students will be seen not now, but soon. With activities to be engaged like writing essays, analysis and different kind of review, I believe that progress will be made.
Catch-up Fridays benefit students by reinforcing key concepts, improving academic performance, and boosting confidence. The program’s structured approach targets specific learning gaps, facilitating significant progress. It also fosters a positive learning environment, promotes collaboration, and develops essential skills like communication and critical thinking.
Through the Catch-up Fridays program, children can gain the ability to read effectively, develop a deeper comprehension of the principles that support a just and peaceful society, and enhance their capacity to recognize different points of view, empowering them to form their own informed conclusions.
It is a must to bring the most quality learning experience to every student. Given the struggles and challenges they have faced, the least the government can do is provide their need and make them comfortable
The new Catch-up Friday is a step ahead to achieve effective learning. With this program, we will be able to make or become a responsible citizen and great leaders in the future.

Weak emphasizing of child protection policies risks every learner’s safety.
Students perceived schools as their second-home which is why it is important for them to feel safe behind doors of every classroom.
Schools help them develop social skills, civic participation, and independence, what will become of them if they are not learning within safety.
According to the Department of Education, there are schools who do not take child protective policies seriously. They claim that only providing discussions about bullying and harassment within classrooms is enough to prevent this issue.
However, the lack of emphasis to activities that prevents cases of bullying and harassments results to absence of students, low academic performances and unprotective learning
In fact, according to a survey conducted by South East Asia
Primary Metrics, at least 63 percent of students in public schools dropped out or chose to use alternative delivery mode due to being a victim of bullying and different kind of harassment.
If students are not learning within safety, their overall well-being will be at risk. Receiving quality education is as important as their protection. Every learners’ safety against bullying and harassments must be assured in all aspects specially within schools.
Institutions that don’t prioritize safety of their students are unacceptable, just because they don’t have history of bullying doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.
“Risks of students’ safety within schools is no joke.
In order to make learning comfortable to every student, I suggest to enhance or emphasize programs and strict rules about against bullying and harassment within schools. Promoting simple activities about peer connection and youth discipline should be considered as well.

Dear Editor:
Estipona National High School is considered the most outstanding school out of the municipality of Pura. This school has the capability to allow many students to participate in various competitions, bringing honor to this school, which then makes it the so-called “home of the champions. However, behind all these achievements and successes, an unbearable sight lies within.
Estipona National High School is full of students who exceed their potential, whether in sports, performers, or even journalism. The problem is that they do not receive enough support from the school, which holds them back from achieving so much more than they can achieve alone.
As a journalist in enhs, the lack of facilities and training bothers us the most, as we are willing to give everything just to bring honor to our school. We are journalists, Mga Manunulat. Even with such treatment, I am still grateful that this school has teachers who are understanding enough and are willing to help us voice our concerns.

Talking back to someone much older than you is seen as a disrespect; if you are young, your say is not a say at all but is seen as a mockery.
Often assumed to have an idealistic mindset, in the Philippines, if you are young, you are considered innocent and dumb. People often base the growth and maturity of a person in accordance with how long they have existed; this is a shame, as today the youth is observed to have a much tighter grasp on the modern world, we live in.
“
in the Philippines, if you are young, you are considered innocent and dumb.
In many societies, age has been a traditional yardstick for respect and wisdom. The notion that the older you are, the wiser you must be, has been deeply ingrained in our cultural fabric. While there is merit in valuing the experiences that come with age, it is essential to recognize that age alone should not be the sole determinant of one’s credibility or insight.
The belief that the youth possess an idealistic and naive mindset is a stereotype that unfairly undermines the intelligence and awareness of younger generations. The world is evolving rapidly, driven by technological advancements and shifting societal norms.
In this dynamic environment, the youth are not merely passive observers but active participants, adapting quickly to change and often leading innovation.
In the Philippines, and in many other cultures, there
exists a cultural bias that associates youthfulness with innocence and ignorance. This mindset can be limiting, preventing the acknowledgment of the valuable perspectives and contributions that young individuals bring to the table.
Age should not be a barrier that stifles the exchange of ideas; instead, it should be an opportunity for intergenerational dialogue, where insights from different age groups can complement each other. It is crucial to challenge the assumption that the length of one’s existence directly correlates with their understanding of the world. The youth of today are growing up in a time of unprecedented access to information, diverse perspectives, and global connectivity. This exposure equips them with a unique set of skills and perspectives that can enrich the broader
societal discourse.

Dejected History
The 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution is the union of millions of Filipinos from all walks of life to march along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) from February 22 to 25 in Metro Manila, and in cities all over the country. They did so with exemplary courage, overthrowing President Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship peacefully and bringing an end to violence and ushering in a new era of true freedom and democracy.
Former presidents Benigno Aquino and Rodrigo Duterte persisted in commemorating and remembering EDSA in Iloilo along side elected leaders like Mayor Jerry Treñas and Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. Now that Bong Bong Marcos is the president, not a whimper has been heard. Even an apology for all the wrongs committed during the oppressive rule of Marcos
Sr. has never been offered by the Marcoses. So why should the Marcoses lead the country in commemorating the historic event that overthrew their father?
Recognizing the anniversary of the end of his father Ferdinand Marcos’ 20-year dictatorship and the family’s departure from Malacañang is awkward ,it is nonetheless a valid reason to not let citizens honor the sacrifices made by the people during the revolution. The Philippine Star reports that there were numerous arguments and disputes on strategies and objectives all the way to EDSA. Many others endured imprisonment, torture, and even gave their lives in order to achieve the ultimate victory.
Some argue that there is nothing to celebrate and that EDSA is not important like other
holidays, but it was EDSA that ended one of the darkest eras in Philippine history. Human rights organizations claim that approximately 3,000 individuals were killed, 34,000 were tortured, and 70,000 were imprisoned during the dictatorship. The Philippines is the first country to overthrow an authoritarian government without violence. It’s time to stand up , speak out and prevent the so-called public servants from causing people to forget one of the most significant events in history. We must constantly reinforce the legacy of EDSA.Celebrating EDSA is
Rather than dismissing the youth’s opinions as mere mockery, society should encourage a more inclusive approach to decision-making. Embracing a diversity of voices, irrespective of age, fosters a more vibrant and resilient community.
The ability to appreciate and integrate the strengths of both the older and younger generations can lead to more comprehensive solutions to the complex challenges we face.
It’s time to break free from the shackles of age-based prejudices. Age should not be a barrier to respectful communication or a hindrance to acknowledging the valuable insights that individuals of all ages bring to the table. By recognizing the multifaceted nature of wisdom and understanding, society can truly progress towards a more inclusive and enlightened future.

Editor’s Response
Dear Reader,It is with great concern that we address the recent revelations regarding Estipona National High School. While the school has undoubtedly earned a stellar reputation as the “home of the champions,” it pains us to acknowledge the underlying issues that have surfaced.
As journalists, it is our duty to shed light on both the triumphs and the challenges faced by our educational institutions. The testimonies shared by our fellow students paint a picture of immense talent hindered by a lack of support and resources.
As journalists, we vow to continue advocating for the necessary changes that will enable every student at Estipona National High School to thrive. We urge the school administration to address these concerns promptly and allocate the resources needed to foster an environment where every student can reach their full potential.

Chaos
by:ROSALINDASchool programs play a vital role in shaping a well-rounded educational experience, offering students valuable opportunities for enrichment, socialization, and skill development.
However, behind the scenes, the management of these programs can be a chaotic and unorganized affair. From extracurricular activities to academic events, the lack of proper planning and execution is a disservice to both students and educators.
One of the most common issues plaguing school program management is the constant sense of being rushed. Whether it’s lastminute announcements, hastily arranged meetings, or rushed planning, the pressure to deliver results quickly can lead to mistakes and oversights. Students are left scrambbling to adjust their schedules, and teachers are left feeling stressed and underprepared.
Moreover, the lack of clear communication exacerbates the problem. Important information is often disseminated haphazardly, leading to confusion and

misunderstandings. This not only affects the day-to-day operations of the school but also undermines the trust between the educators, students, and parents.
Another critical issue is the inadequate allocation of resources. Whether it’s insufficient funding for programs or a lack of proper facilities, the result is the same: compromised quality.
Students are deprived of the opportunity to fully benefit from these programs, and educators are left struggling to make do with what little they have. Ultimately, the quality of the school program suffers, and the educational experience is diminisshed.
So, what can be done to address these challenges?
First and foremost, there needs to be a fundamental shift in our approach to organizing and managing school programs. Additionally, adequate resources must be allocated to support these
by:YURIELSAIDespite most public schools facing problems on overpopulation and the lack of facilities, CHED still pushes for state universities and colleges to stop offering SHS programs placing over 17000 grade 11 students the risk of displacement.
They claim that this would solve the budgeting issue the department is facing, but with the current circumstances facing public schools, this is a perilous passage threatening the quality of education in public schools. If the commission on higher education persists in implementing this, this would put both teachers and students attending public schools deeper into the problem of overpopulation and lack of facilities. This is because if those students that are now enrolled in state universities were to be displaced, they would swarm public schools. Almost all schools in the Philippines, especially in urban areas, nowadays have no choice but to situate over 40 students in a single room; this violates the limit of 35, but they do not have a choice because everyone has a right to a good education. If they persist in implementing it, this problem
would be enormously inflated, drastically decreasing the quality of education the students attain.
The lack of facilities to accommodate doesn’t just limit the number of classrooms available; essential equipment needed, such as textbooks, chairs, and tables, is also lacking. Students nowadays are sometimes forced to learn remotely as their school cannot accommodate them anymore,
so how would they go about accommodating more students coming from big state universities?
It is also not just those students in public schools that are to be affected, but also those that are to be displaced. Those 17000 students that are

CHED argues that this would have a positive impact as it would lift state colleges with the burden of accommodating senior high school students, but they neglect the burdens public schools will face. Instead of transferring the persistent problem, you should just think of a solution for it altogether. If they are facing a problem with budgeting, they should just focus on solving the problem of corruption itself, not burdening students and teachers. Transferring a persistent problem to another problem is not solving the problem itself. The commission on higher education should rethink their decision because if they don’t, it will just add to the problem itself rather than solving it.

Foreign vessels must not tolerate harmful actions that are affecting the marine ecosystem and deprive Filipino fishermen from their right to benefit from it.

the chemical stuns the fish without killing it, making it easy to catch in a net or even by hand. Cyanide fishing can lead to coral bleaching or even outright coral death, which is why it is illegal in many of the countries where it is practiced, although these laws are often inadequately enforced.
According to President Bong Bong Marcos, once the allegation is confirmed, he will file charges against the foreign vessels. As the case developed, the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) ordered BFAR to gather evidence to support their claims. It’s time to bring order to the chaos and provide students with the quality education they deserve.
It is important to remember that school programs are meant to enhance the educational experience, not detract from it. By taking the time
to properly manage and organize these programs, schools can ensure that they are providing students with the best possible opportunities for growth and development.
The management of school programs is a complex and challenging task, but one that is vital to the overall success of the educational experience. The rushed and unorganized management of school programs is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. By prioritizing proper planning, clear communication, and adequate resources, we can ensure that school programs are not just a box to be checked off but a valuable part of the educational experience.
It’s time to bring order to the chaos and provide students with the quality education they deserve. It’s time to shine a light on this issue and demand a change.

issue. Cyanide fishing has becomea prevalent practice in Philippine waters, leading to the haphazard destruction of marine resources in these areas. The use of this practice does not only have a negative environmental impact but also a humanitarian one. Over thousands of Filipino fishermen have been relying on the marine resources in these waters to support their families for generations. If these marine resources have been destroyed, their livelihoods will be egregiously disrupted. It is imperative that quick and proper action be taken to address this issue before further irreparable damage is done to the marine ecosystem and the livelihoods of Filipinos. It is time to demand that China respect the sovereign rights of the Philippines.
During the pandemic, horrendous long lockdowns and closure of schools has made a huge negative impact upon Filipino learners. In fact, in the recent result of the Programme for International Students Assessment, the Philippines ranked 77th out of 81 countries weakest in mathematics, science, and reading comprehension.
A survey conducted by DepEd also showed that 68 percent of students struggles to cooperate in classes and achieve basic learning competencies.
These outcomes are what urged the Department of Education to release and implement the new MATATAG curriculum. This program is one of the learning recovery plans of DepEd to fill in the gaps induced by Covid-19, as it further aims to improve the overall academic performances of students.
This program is also designed to provide help towards students who faced inevitable circumstances during the pandemic such as teenage pregnancies, early marriage, and mental health issues. MATATAG also provides alternative delivery mode which gives students learning materials to help them learn despite of not being able to attend classes.
This program serves as the best recovery plan implemented, with this curriculum, the learning experience will be more comfortable for students. Given that this program also aims to reduce students’ workloads and just focus on the primary subjects. MATATAG will also absolutely help students shape their minds and become competent learners enough to become effective learners in the future.
The implementation of the MATATAG curriculum ensures every Filipino learner the best quality education they deserve. It is nice to see that the struggles and complaint of these students are not fallen onto deaf ears.

by:LETTENATAHALIEIn todays society, many women are facing discrimination and biases especially in their workplaces. They were often placed to lower-paying jobs, denied opportunities for career advancement, and subjected to unequal pay for equal work due to their “gender”.
Women empowerment is a crucial issue in today’s world. However, women have consistently fought against these inequality leading to important milestones such as the rise of feminism. Women have been treated non exsistance for decade. Breaking gender barriers in workplaces means promoting and enduring equal access to many opportunities and advancement for all genders.
Women are born with dedication and skills which means they have limitless potentials. They were thought how to grow individually and become what they want to be. All people should be equally treated disregard the gender.
By raising awareness people will be United and enlightened about the importance of promoting gender equality, and by means of that we can break down barriers and create a more equitable society where, female voices will be heard, valued and respected. Let us shutter those barriers and create a more inclusive future.

The No Collection Policy, implemented by the Department of Education (DEPED), mandates that public schools in various areas should not impose mandatory fees or charges that serve as barriers to enrollment, attendance, or completion of basic education. This policy aims to ensure equitable access to education for all students, regardless of their socio-economic background, by prohibiting the unnecessary collection of fees for projects, uniforms, extracurricular activities, and other school-related expenses. It also emphasizes that any contributions solicited from parents should be voluntary and reasonable, with clear guidelines on their utilization and accountability, therefore encouraging an educational setting that respects social justice, inclusivity, and fairness. No Collection Policy is essential because schools have reserved budget for their expenses through the Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) fund. This fund is specifically designated to cover various school needs, including classroom materials, equipment, and other costs. By strictly following the No Collection Policy, schools can effectively use funds from the MOOE to provide necessary resources and facilities for students without imposing additional financial burdens on them or their families.

These situations not only violate the policy but also disregard the rights of students, who should not be burdened with financial obligations that hinder their access to education.

It’s highly unfair when schools disregard this policy to seek money from students. This could potentially harm their education, which should never be encouraged, as every student deserves access to quality education regardless of their social or economic status. Maintaining the concept that education should never be dependent on financial resources requires strict observation of regulations like the No Collection Policy. For the sake of the students, it is important that the No Collection Policy is followed. When schools effectively implement this policy, it indicates that they handle every learner equally and equitably. This contributes to ensuring that all students can succeed academically, regardless of their family’s financial situation. By adhering to the policy, families and students are relieved of the burden of having to pay for items they cannot afford.
