UNLEASHING NOSTALGIA SAI PINAY

Recognizing the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and reconnecting with our roots, the SK Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) is spearheading an initiative to revive these traditional Pinoy games.

During the week-long fiesta celebration taking place simultaneously with SK Week, starting May 15, a range of these games will be reintroduced to the younger generation, allowing them to experience firsthand the joy and simplicity that comes from engaging in these age-old activities.

One of the traditional games that will be featured is “Tumbang Preso,” also known as “Bato-lata” in Cebuano. This game involves an empty tin can and a slipper or flat stone for each player. One player, called “it,” watches over the tin at a designated spot, while the rest of the players stand at a distance behind a designated toe line. The aim of the players is to hit and topple the tin with their slipper or stone. Once the tin is toppled, the “it” must put the tin back up again as quickly as possible while trying to tag the players attempting to retrieve their slipper. The tagged player becomes the new “it”.

Another game that will be showcased is palo cebo, a fun-filled game where participants try to climb a greased bamboo pole to claim a prize at the top. This game requires agility, balance, and

perseverance, as participants must strategically plan their moves to reach the prize. Through palo cebo, participants will learn the importance of perseverance and the rewards that come with overcoming challenges.

Patintero, a popular game of tag is a classic Filipino street game where players are split into defenders and attackers. With one team acting as the “it” team and the other team trying to cross their territory without being tagged. The defenders, or “it,” aim to block or tag the opposing team as they try to cross from the starting line to the back end line and back. Success means switching roles, but being tagged turns attackers into defenders.

“Hulihan ng Biik” is a traditional game where players attempt to catch a “piglet” by stepping on its shadow. This game not only encourages physical movement but also enhances coordination and learn to think on their feet. The game provides an entertaining and active way to engage participants in a fun and challenging pursuit.

Lastly, agaw buko, a game where participants try to grab a coconut on top of a bamboo pole, will be part of the lineup. This game tests participants’ strength, agility, and determination as they

compete to retrieve the coveted coconut prize. Agaw buko not only provides a thrilling and competitive experience but also highlights the importance of perseverance and never giving up.

Other traditional Filipino games that may be featured in the sports festival include “Agawang Sulok,” “Sungka,” “Palosebo,” “Luksong-Baka,” “Sipa,” and “Piko,” among others. These games are not only fun and exciting but also promote physical activity and social interaction among children.

The sports festival aims to provide support and recognition to every athlete who participates, according to SK Chairman Ashley. In addition to the traditional games, the festival will also include a oneday league for various sports such as volleyball, badminton, and chess.

Ashley Nool, the SK Chairman, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “ Trina-try naming ibigay yung best naminna ibigay yung best namin na ibigay sa bawat isang athlete yung suporta na deserve nila”. She further added, “This event is for our fiesta, so we have cash prizes

to encourage more people to participate.” Unfortunately, the advent of computer games has overshadowed traditional Filipino games, leading to a decline in their popularity. However, there are efforts to revive and promote these games, such as the “Laro ng Lahi” project by the SK Sangguniang Kabataan,

“a range of these games will be reintroduced to the younger generation, allowing them to experience firsthand the joy and simplicity that comes from engaging in these ageold activities.

According to interviews conducted with avid players, “Kase nilalaro siya ng lahat, kaya kailangan mo ding laruin para makasunod sa trend,” Faith Melegrito remarks. However, she also underscores the importance of skill in the game, hinting at the depth that lies beneath its surface.

Moreover, the 8 Ball App serves as a platform for students to learn valuable life lessons. “Wag maging greedy, kase pang tinaya mo lahat baka masayang lang ang lahat.” Carlo James Santiago stated.

Santiago’s insight adds a social dimension to the narrative, emphasizing how friendships and shared experiences drive engagement with the game.

“Nahikayat ako ng mga kaibigan ko kase, para may mapaglipasan ng oras, bonding lang naming magkakaibigan,” he added. Rainier Estabillo’s innovative use of a ruler for shot accuracy showcases the creativity and dedication that players bring to their craft. Insufficient Support

The recent announcement of the budget allocated for the Palarong Pambansa from the public schools, has sparked controversy among students.

While the government boasts about the funding for the event, the reality for the athletes participating in the competition is far from impressive. The recent announcement of the budget allocated for the Palarong Pambansa from the public schools, has sparked controversy among students. While the government boasts about the funding for the event, the reality for the athletes participating in the competition is far from impressive.

The allocation of a meager 50 pesos per day for athletes participating in the Palarong Pambansa at Estipona National High School unveils a distressing truth, the lack of substantial support for athletes. Beyond the mere act of disbursing funds lies the critical evaluation of whether these resources are sufficient to meet the needs and expenses faced by athletes who are as equally drivers to their craft.

The scenes unfolding in public schools across provinces paint a grim picture of the challenges faced by athletes, with a daily allowance of 50 pesos for the Provincial Meet falling drastically short of meeting even basic necessities.

One major consequence of inadequate transportation for public schools during provincial meets is the potential exclusion of students from lower-income backgrounds. These students

barriers to participation in extracurricular activities due to financial constraints, and the lack of transportation further exacerbates this issue. As a result, talented and motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds may miss out on the chance to showcase their skills and talents on a larger stage, limiting their opportunities for recognition and advancement.

Moreover, the absence of reliable transportation can also impact the morale and motivation of students and coaches. The inability to attend provincial meets due to transportation issues can be demoralizing for students who have worked hard to qualify for these events. It can also be disheartening for coaches who have invested time and effort in training their teams, only to face logistical challenges that prevent them from competing at the provincial level. This can lead to feelings of frustration, disappointment, and disillusionment among both students and coaches.

Furthermore, the lack of transportation for athletes from ENHS adds another layer of difficulty to their already challenging journey. As highlighted by Elyza Urma, a student-athlete from ENHS, sheds light on the struggles faced by student-athletes due to limited patrols and prioritization of certain sports,

Lady Bulldogs dominates Lady Red Warriors, 5-1

National University magnificently secured the victory against Lady Red Warriors, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16, in the elimination round of the UAAP Season 86 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, March 10.

Bella Belen led the charge for NU with 11 points, including 10 digs and five receptions in all-round play leading NU to a five-game winning streak and a 5-1 record.

sila lahat. We’re very happy with that,” said coach Norman Miguel.

Aside from the two liberos, all 12 players of NU scattered points secured their victory and position in second place in the team standings.

“We’re really happy kasi nakita po namin lahat kayang magcontribute sa team and yung team naman po kasi namin, we’re not building a star player,” Belen said.

Canino led the Lady Spikers’ offense with 16 points, including 13 attacks, two blocks,

four-point lead of 13-9, but then Bella Belen scored a kill to extend the lead to five at 14-9.

The Lady Bulldogs scored seven points while the Lady Red Warriors only scored four with a service ace by Arah Panique, giving NU a lead of 21-13. UE managed to score two consecutive points to stop NU’s momentum, but Myrtle Escanlar responded with a kill, increasing NU’s lead to 22-15.

An error by the Lady Red Warriors ended the game, 25-1, leading Lady Bulldogs clinching the victory, improving their record

and hindered competition readiness. The disparity in treatment between different sports also raises questions about fairness and inclusivity in supporting all athletes regardless of the popularity or size of their sport.

In contrast, events like the Bulacan Provincial Athletic Meet showcase robust support for student-athletes, emphasizing the importance of adequate resources and infrastructure for sporting events. The disparity in support highlights the need for equitable opportunities and resources across all schools participating in athletic meets.

The Palarong Pambansa is not just a one-time event it is an opportunity for young athletes to showcase their skills and potentially secure a spot in the national team. However, with such a small budget, these athletes are faced with the daunting task of competing at a high level while also worrying about their daily needs.

It is imperative that we shift our focus away from mere token gestures towards tangible and meaningful support for our athletes. Adequate funding is not just about financial assistance, it is about empowering athletes to excel, providing them with the resources they need to thrive and succeed.

As long as we do not dispose of this issue, fairness in play would never

Estipona National High School (ENHS) teachers raised their concerns about the lack of resources, and time preparedness of the new Department of Education’s ProgramCatch up fridays, saying their pockets cannot afford the needs to implement the program effectively on a press briefing, conducted by The Fountain, on March 6. Catch-up fridays, as per DepEd, is a learning mechanism intended to strengthen foundational, social, and other relevant skills necessary to actualize the intent of the basic education curriculum.

Due to lack of budget and the country’s hot temperature, educators and students from Estipona National High School believes that the Department of Education’s proposed plan to revert the school calendar into its old schedule is for our country to cope up with these types of circumstances, in a press briefing conducted by The Fountain on January 26.

“Nasa tropical country tayo, sobrang init sa bansa pag dating ng April at May, that is why ang hirap magturo for teachers and at the same time yung mga students to focus,” Rosemarie Alberto, Teacher from Estipona National High School stated.

She also pointed out that the Department of Education is running out of budget that is why they cannot afford to provide electric fans in all school facilities when summer comes especially that the education system of the country is still on its process to cope up with the new normal.

“Wala naming may gustong pumasok kung sobrang init

lalo na kung sobrang dami ng estudyante sa isang room, minsan nga yung dapat na 30 students lang per room ay umaabot na ng 40-60 students kasi mismong school ay kulang sa facilities,” Alberto added.

On the other hand, Almyra Delos Santos, STEM student from Estipona National High School also expressed that this plan of DepEd is necessary because it is also a way for students to achieved a quality education.

“I remember last year, kailangang maging half-day ang classes because of heat, and dahil don, nabawasan yung opportunity naming to learn more because the time given for subjects to be discussed was also shortened,” Delos Santos said.

“Although naituturo naman lahat ng subjects that time, pero matatapos ng 1pm, which is lunch time na, I remember back then, hindi na halos gumagana yung utak naming magkakaklase dahil sa gutom, so I think yung plano na ibalik yung calendar is really a good way para hindi na rin tayo naghahabol pagdating sa mga schedules ng activities and competitions,” she added. They also encourage DepEd and

nagkakaroon ng problem,” Maricle Garlitos, English teacher at ENHS stated.

•SNACKS and CANDIES

Feli Pascua, a grade 9 teacher at ENHS said she did not have to worry about the reading materials since her classroom has its own reading corner. But to effectively implement the said program, Pascua said she had to buy prizes like snacks and candies worth around Php100200 as giveaways to students.

“Hindi naman kasi recorded kung umattend ka ng catch-up fridays, that is why konti lang ang umaattend,” Pascua told The Fountain, “We gave prizes for students so they won’t get bored and we can convince them to attend class every Friday.

•More Workload

Aside from added expenses, Marie Antalan, grade 7 teacher at ENHS said the new program has “further burdened” teachers

other institutions involved to give a clear instruction of the said plan in order for the teachers and students to give time to adjust.

“Maganda yung plan, pero dahil nga nasa post pandemic pa rin tayo, hindi naman pwedeng biglain nalang yung pagimplement, kaya kailangan unti-unti yung pagbabalik ng dating schedule,” Aeyesha Pagatpatan, grade 9 student from Estipona National High School expressed.

Meanwhile, it was announced by the Department of Education that the Academic Year (A.Y) for 20232024 will end its rites on May 29 and the A.Y for 2024-2025 will start on July 29 and will end on May 15, 2025, and the next A.Y for 2025-2026 will start on June 15.

with more workloads because those who conduct the reading sessions now have an additional subject to teach instead of regular subjects.

“It has almost the same objectives as NLC in which was rolled out last year to similarly address learning losses caused by the pandemic, so I don’t think this program is necessary,” Antalan stated.

•Collating the Feedback DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa, however said the agency will not halt the program instead they will encourage teachers, and principals to provide feedback and recommendations on the effective conduct of catch-up fridays.

Aiming to fulfill full digitalization and interconnectivity of all Department of Education offices and schools nationwide, various educators from Estipona National High School expressed their concerns about the enactment of digital education in 2028 that could play a huge part in improving the quality of education in an interview conducted by the Fountain on January 29.

Recently, the Department of Education presented their future project entitled “Digital Education, or DigiEd2028,” on the Basic Education Report of Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte on January 25.

According to Gerald Presiados, teacher 2 at Estipona National High School, he believes that technology plays a huge role in education, which is why it is a good idea for teachers and learners to start adapting to

“Last November, I attended an event in which it focused on the transition of learning from traditional into digitalize; nagamit natin ang way na ito nuong pandemic, and through that, nagging tuloy-tuloy pa rin yung pag-aaral ng mga bata, so I think dapat talaga syang isulong,” he stated.

“Kasabay nang pagsulong nito, syempre hindi mawawala dyan ang paggamit ng Artificial Intelligence, or Al, that is why teachers must teach students how to use it wisely. Pwedeng humingi ng tulong kay Al, but it should also be limited,” he added.

On the other hand,

Carmela Pinili, head teacher at Araling Panlipunan of Estipona National High School, pointed out that the objectives of the said program are helpful to both teachers and learners; however, DepEd should provide proper training, materials, and equipment for teachers for them to teach learners a quality type of education.

As the Department of Education (DepEd) is committed on launching different programs that will advocate the mantra “No student left behind,” Maricel Garlitos, School Paper Adviser (SPA), and Cynthia Gamola, former School Paper Adviser of Estipona National High School ol (ENHS) urged campus journalist across the school to “speak the truth and be brave” in order to promote an inclusive education for all, in an interview conducted by the fountain..

Garlitos challenged the members of school publication in both English and Filipino from Estipona National High School to use “campus joumalism” as a tool in providing an environment where voiceless people can be heard.

She also pointed out that campus journalists should be brave in finding the truth in order to influence other Filipino people to contribute towards a better quality of education.

“Gamitin nyo yung pagiging journalist Ninyo para maipahayag

ang iba’ kwento at saloobin ng mga taong alam ninyong takot magsalita, Garlitos stated. “May one time nga nga nuon, nuon, may bata na hindi maayos yung kalagayan ng mata, what we did is we made a feature article about him, and through that, naipahayag yun sa buong school, and that made him as one of role models in today’s generation,” she added. Garlitos also emphasized the role of journalism in maintaining the peace and democracy of the country.

“Sa pamamagitan ng pagpapahayag ninyo, lahat ng mga hinaing ng taong bayan ay nakararating sa gobyerno, kaya naman duon palang. mayroon na silang idea ano yung dapat nilang gawin or aksyunan,” she uttered. On the other hand, Cynthia Gamolo also shared that she believes journalism is not only about relaying what is the current news, it is also about bringing out the best potential of all student

“As I remember back then, mayroong mga students na hindi naman ganoon kagaling sa klase, pero nung isinali ko sya

bilang part ng school publication or campus joumalism, duon namin nakita na hindi lang pala makikita sa loob ng apat na corner ng classroom yung galing at skills ng isang bata,” she expressed. Gamolo also stressed out that they can use their skills and knowledge to inspire other people to write, and to inform them, not only for their fellow students but also to their teachers and peers.

In accordance with that, she also stated that she believes writing is hard, you have to spend time and effort in order to improve their skills in their respective fortes.

“Be brave, be very brave, wite when you have the chance to do so, kasi alam kong kahit saan kayo magpunta, matapos man yung journey nyo dito sa school as cj, andyan na sa puso ninyo yung pagiging manunulat at mamamahayag,”she concluded.

NLC is the remediation, intervention, and enhancement program of Department of Education (DepEd) that aims to bridge the learning gaps among students to assist them in adjusting from two-year virtual modality to in-person set-up.

According to Badar, the objective of the said DepEd program is helpful in tackling the needs for quality of education however the lack of preparedness of students in attending classes after the required school days makes it ineffective.

“Nuong una, marami ang umaattend, pero nuong mga sumunod na linggo, iilan nalang kasi nga bakasyon, it was supposed to be their rest and syempre ganun din sa mga teachers,” she stated.

Instead of focusing on remediation programs, Badar hopes that on the next end of school rites, DepEd will target more on preparing for the next academic year, ensuring that the curriculum will enhance the skills of the learners to be ready on the real-world opportunity.

“Paghandaan na lamang ang susunod na school year kaysa ilaan ang oras sa programang dagdag lamang sa dagdag na suliranin sa sektor ng edukasyon,” she said. On the other hand, Anne Millo, grade 7 student from ENHS told The Fountain, “Nakatatamad na po pumunta sa school kapag bakasyon para mag-aral ulit, lalo na kung konti lang din po ang kasama, kaya mas pinili ko nalang din pong hindi na umattend at mag-aral na lamang po sa bahay ng mga posibleng lessons sa susunod na school year.”

Meanwhile, ENHS implemented the program with only two camps: Enhancement camp which contains 29 grade 7 students and 25 grade 8 students; Consolidation camp which includes one grade 7 students and four grade 8 students.

The No Collection Policy, implemented by the Department of Education (DEPED), mandates that public schools in various areas should not impose mandatory fees or charges that serve as barriers to enrollment, attendance, or completion of basic education. This policy aims to ensure equitable access to education for all students, regardless of their socio-economic background, by prohibiting the unnecessary collection of fees for projects, uniforms, extracurricular activities, and other school-related expenses. It also emphasizes that any contributions solicited from parents should be voluntary and reasonable, with clear guidelines on their utilization and accountability, therefore encouraging an educational setting that respects social justice, inclusivity, and fairness.

According to Deped, the No Collection Policy is essential because schools have reserved budget for their expenses through the Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) fund. This fund is specifically designated to cover various school needs, including classroom materials, equipment, and other costs. By

strictly following the No Collection Policy, schools can effectively use funds from the MOOE to provide necessary resources and facilities for students without imposing additional financial burdens on them or their families.

However, despite the clear directives outlined in the No Collection Policy, there are still instances where certain schools persist in soliciting funds from students, directly going against the

policy’s principles and the wishes of students. These solicitations often come in various forms, ranging from compulsory fees for projects and extracurricular activities, which pressure students to make voluntary contributions that feel obligatory. These situations not only violate the policy but also disregard the rights of students, who should not be burdened with financial obligations that hinder their access to education.

For the sake of the students, it is important that the No Collection Policy is followed. When schools effectively implement this policy, it indicates that they handle every learner equally and equitably. This contributes to ensuring that all students can succeed academically, regardless of their family’s financial situation. By adhering to the policy,

The education department has the biggest slice of pie when it comes to budgeting, but why are teachers still forced to bust their own pockets to deliver quality education?

Well, I guess all of it got lost, so they now have to pay the full cost. This is a persistent problem occurring in almost every department of governance in the Philippines. Money like a pie is flowing through different hands and is slowly cut in slices until its completely lost in the abyss of endless hunger of corruption.

This leaves the actual teachers and those who are in need of that education with barely any.

Educators are constantly

considered heroes for sacrificing their own pockets, which could possibly be for their families, but are being supplied for the betterment of education.

Oftentimes, in order to provide the quality education their students deserve they’re forced to buy their own appliances and school supplies for their students.

Moreover, the lack of transparency and accountability in the allocation of educational funds perpetuates a culture of corruption. It is crucial to address these systemic issues to ensure that the budget allocated to the education

sector truly benefits those who need it the most. A comprehensive and holistic approach is necessary to reform the education system in the Philippines. This includes not only increasing budget allocations but also implementing strict measures to curb corruption, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and fostering a culture of accountability. Only through such reforms can the education sector truly thrive and for quality education truly be attained with nothing lost more than its cost.

families and students are relieved of the burden of having to pay for items they cannot afford.

It’s highly unfair when schools disregard this policy to seek money from students. This could potentially harm their education, which should never be encouraged, as every student deserves access to quality education regardless of their social or economic status. Maintaining the concept that education should never be dependent on financial resources requires strict observation of regulations like the No Collection Policy. This is necessary to ensure impartial education for all.

While the Department of Education (DEPED) tries to make education fair with implementations like the No Collection Policy, many schools still forcefully demand voluntary fees, making them seem like must-pay charges. This shows a big problem of schools pressuring students and families for money. The policy must be further enforced by DEPED as it could risk the quality of education provided to every learner.
