MARIO’S WORLD
Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? Pictorial space according to Le Corbusier is the work that 2d arts interprets 3d space viewed from distance, by adding depth to recede backwards into the page, however, cannot be entered or circulated through. In Le Corbusier’s pictorial space, the insightful space always refers to frontality of the object which depicts in a plane parallel to the plane of the picture surface. The extending of flat plane with contoured shape are also focused in terms of creating a sense of distance and eventually showing the facets into depth.
Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) In Le Corbusiers painting, continuity of edges and pure extension are the two keys contributed to create flatness. The first property pitted against contour points, by using “marriage de contour”, giving a sense of conceptual distance. The second one is against color which in his painting the great use of black allows all shadow to be left ambiguous and therefore extending the flatness in his painting. First elevation

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD
Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? The primary reason that perspective differs from projection is the absence of vanishing point as they develop their depth and distance differently. Pictorial space mainly focuses on flatness and frontality, giving link to a fixed point of view where all horizontal edges converge towards them and demonstrating a sense of infinity. Therefore, the geographic shape is always distoted.However, projection focuses more about concise and scientific objectivity which the picture can be occupied in the real world, giving vanish points extented to infinity.
Concept of drawing: The two Mario elevation are combined as two “parallel worlds” with light sources in opposite direction (shown by shading of objects and ground).
Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? Axonometric projection originally arose in ancient visual practise, specifically in military context and was utilised to sketch 3D military projectile according to the earliest record. Later on, the drawing technique had started to be delivered at school at 18th and 19th century which lay the foundation for mechanization and industrialisation.
Compared with original Mario elevations, new drawings are designed to be seemed as two isolated landscapes but meanwhile show possible connection. Different colour bases of green applied for buildings and columns of two sites shows that clouds block a part of view which further stands for the obstruction between two worlds. However , hidden space from the original elevation are now supplemented with river, footpath and lake those item which could link the two worlds. In the illustrated world, the new hidden space create uncertainty of the connection. There is no apparent evidence to show two world are linked as the view of footpath is blocked by mountain, underground are not fully displayed. Therefore, whether two worlds are connected or isolated depends on your view of viewing it.
Technique: In the illustrated drawing, 0.25pt outline is used to trace on the object. In contrast, 0.5pt ouline is utlised to clarfy the cut section and floating area of underneath world. The change of dark and light tone of colour on facets (including gradient effect) illustrates the shadow and depth of objects. The use of transparency allows the design of showing hidden space. Lake, waterfall and pool are added also as a reason of matching the blue tone of original color pallet.
