In the first week, we were assigned to find out outdoor activities that could be done with more that two people within a day. By brainstorming, we listed out a large variety of activities to be selected, then, sorting out by the level of interesting and feasibility. Through reading the passage ‘Vision in Product design’, we learn some basic concepts and also the importance of satisfying user needs. This concept give us an absolute guideline and helps us to narrow down the broadness of the project. After a careful consideration and confirmation from tutor, we selected wakeboarding as our project topic and move on.

RESEARCH

How to play wakeboard? 1. Wear a life jacket and use a spotter. A basic boating safety tip for all water sports is to make sure there is a designated spotter to help alert the driver to your position at all times and keep an eye out for other approaching boats or objects in the water. 2. Figure out if you are goofy or regular footed. Before you go out on the water for the first time, one of the most basic wakeboarding tips to remember is to decide which foot you want to face forward. The foot you choose should be the foot you always intuitively place forward, whether it’s because you’re about to kick a ball or you’re regaining your balance. 3. Use a shorter rope. Another helpful beginner wakeboarding tip is to use a shorter rope that makes it easier for beginners to get up and out of the water. Our recommended length is somewhere between 30 and 50 feet. 4. Use a beginner wakeboarding stance. Using a beginner wakeboarding stance will make the board easier to control and navigate. The easiest stance for beginner wakeboarding is to place the back binding far back towards the end of the board and align it at zero degrees, so that the rider’s weight is able to press directly on top of the rear fin. The front binding should be at about a 15-27 degree angle, slightly pointed towards the front of the wakeboard. 5. Grasp the rope handle in both hands tightly and wait until the driver has driven far enough to eliminate slack from the rope or the person controlling the rope from the boat is ready. 6. Position your lower body as you would while sitting in a chair. The front edge of the wakeboard should be perpendicular to the rope and just above the surface of the water. Your knees should be between your elbows. 7. Signal to the driver or the person controlling the machine that you are ready to be pulled up. 8. Hold on to the rope and keep the board edge above the water as the boat accelerates. 9. Let the boat or machine pull you up and when your body is completely out of the water, begin to straighten your legs. 10. Gently guide the board in turning to point at the back of the boat or the end of the line of the rope. 11. Lean slightly on your back foot to keep the front edge of the board from going under the water.

COLLECT FIRST HAND INFORMATION In order to collect information, we made use of 5W1H and asked ourselves information to make sure we are on the right track. By having questions from who, where, why, which, what and how, the method let us to confirm our collected information fulfil all parts. At this stage, we collected second-hand information from internet and without knowing about the accuracy of these information. Therefore, we need to have first-hand references to confirm our data collected and provide us extra information to enrich the study. By attending the exercise and practice during class, I learned some skills about interview in an efficient way. This could let the interviewee not feel like a laboratory mouse and willing to talk. After the lesson, our group think of the question to be asked and simply divided into three categories ‘before, ongoing, after’. At that time, the questions are too general and not specific. Based on the ‘AEIOU’ skills learned in the workshop, more questions are listed. I checked whether they fulfil most of the factors for example activities, environments and interactions. I found these ways could lead us more specifically focus on the specific information to be collected.

FROM CONTEXT FACTORS TO CLUSTERS Through the in-class activity, we selected useful facts from the interviews and analysis the data by putting into different aspects. These aspects include cultural, sociological, technological, economic, demographic, sociological and ecological. This stage is very important to our study as this analysis the research we done so far. By the strong base settled, I could link the existing factors (around 50 factors) and create clusters out of them. It takes a really long time to understand the definition and meaning of cluster. Our clusters were too general at the beginning such as ‘misunderstanding between boat driver and wakeboarder’. Therefore, we tried to rephrase our statements.

MATRIX & VISION STATEMENT The following stage is to generate and connect these clusters to form a dimension. Although this is very time consuming and tiring, I do think this step make a big impact to the further development of study. The concept is hard to understand, however, after the explanation from the tutor, we could get a basic concept on it. Based on our limited understanding, we created 4 dimensions and two matrixes. After the presentation of our clusters, we changed and modify clusters and formed a complete matrix. By this, we generate 4 types of people and selected self-study type person as our target user. This is very useful to identify the target user of our application and lead us to focus on user-oriented design.

SCENARIOS

We created three scenarios for the people type which our application aimed. Meanwhile, we focused on the possibilities to apply different wearables with the application. We made two attempt of scenarios. In the first attempt, the scenarios we created focus on the results of different users. For example, from the scenarios, the user faced failure on doing the posture and try to learn from the application. However, we found there are lots of problem we did not covered in the first attempt and did not cover most of the problem of our target user. Therefore, we had an second attempt on the scenarios. By naming the characters and adding more details to the scenario, we created three scenarios which include Tim, Alfred and Sam’s story. These scenarios provide us a more clear overall view on our target users problem. I am also more able to list out problems to focus for further development.

JOURNEY MAP

We planned and drew the first user journey map. In the first draft, we created a map by stating out all possibilities and diversion which user face during wakeboarding. However, I recognise that the user journey seems to look very similar to the summarisation of the three scenarios. At that time, we find out that our direction may not be correct as it is too general and include lots of unnecessary things. After googling and asked for comments from our tutor, the direction firmed to be incorrect as it does not analysis the stages which user faced. Looking through different examples of user journey map, I had an overall abstract of a user journey map suppose to be. By then, we summed up 8 stages and formed a chart which list out what user face, do and their feelings. With a detailed version of the user journey map, I am able to pick out opportunities that may be part of our concept and add more details on our proposed concept. By dividing opportunities into 5 categories - Global, preparation, observation, playing and research, we could ensure the proposed concept could fulfil different aspects for the user.

The statements also work as a guide and rating to see how the concepts fulfil these parts. We take smart wetsuit as our wearable as both of us think this is the most direct way for our target user type.

WIREFRAMES After the poster fair, we did a low-fi application flow which performed two user tests based on it. By setting different task for interviewers to perform, I am able to notice some necessary changes in the application such as the information display way and how the style affect user’s view. From the test, we found that the importance of icons that lead user to understand the flow of the application. I also found that the usage of application was not fully test in test 1, therefore, we would like to test more about wearable in the second user test. In the second test, we apply vibrator (without signal control) in the test in order to let user feel more about the posture correction system. However, interviewers did not know the meaning of the vibration and misunderstand it as a warning for the user know about their energy level. We found we need to improve the instructions and directions for user to know the posture vibration is activating. Through the third user test, we are able to achieve the goal of letting user understand complicate data and ways to synchronize with our wearable. I changed the method of displaying datas and diagrams. Colour themes also change in order to provide users a stronger feeling of water sports and wakeboarding.

WEARABLES

In order to simulate the idea of the wearable, we create a model for better display of the concept. In the very beginning, I used a vibrator without signal to simulate the wearable’s vibration for user testing. However, I found that our group should spare more time on the colour ring part as it is time consuming and relatively hard to control. By sketching out the laser file of wearable prototype, we print out to see the exact dimension and see whether it fits our concept. We found that the height should be improve for better visual appearance. I think the visual affects lots on how user view about the concept. Therefore we try to simulate as real as possible to avoid misunderstandings.

Second draft on wearable prototype Material used:

Suggested solution:

LED strip, NeoPixel Ring12, arduino vibration motor

LED strip -> Electro-Luminescent Wire/ other kinds of LED strip

Things to improve: Both two lights are too bright which is much different to our concept LED strip seems to be too thick as this is not the most important part of the suit, we both agree to reduce the size and lightness P. 48
