WE ARE RELENTLESS ABOUT ENDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. WE ARE HONEST ABOUT RACIAL JUSTICE.WE ARE INSISTENT ABOUT EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS.

CONTENTS

Dear Friends, With your steadfast support, we work every day to eliminate racism and empower women. In 2016, your contributions enabled us to deepen and expand both our programming and advocacy efforts. We pressed forward on the launch of our exciting new longer-term housing program for domestic violence survivors and their families. We broadened the reach of our financial literacy classes. We expanded racial justice work, and, as part of our focus on health and safety, we worked creatively to bring new families into our aquatics programs. Your financial support directly translates into our expanding programs, which impact so many women, children, and families within our communities. Your gifts underscore your commitment to making our communities thrive for all members. In the year ahead we will expand our advocacy work and redouble our commitment to ensuring the health and safety of women and children, the advancement of racial justice and civil rights, and the economic empowerment of women. Our vision of a better world is rooted in our mission to eliminate racism and empower women. We know that progress takes hard work. And it takes the passionate commitment of people who believe that change is possible—people like you. Thank you for helping us build a strong foundation and for dreaming with us, believing in a better tomorrow for all, and being an integral part of our social justice work. We couldn’t do it without you. We are on a mission that matters. Together.

WE ARE INITIATING A BRAVE NEW PLAN TO CONFRONT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAM

Not a day passes that we don’t help a survivor of domestic violence. Our first point of contact might be a call on the crisis line or a counseling appointment with a woman still living with her abuser. Or it might be in the middle of the night, when a mother arrives at our emergency shelter with fear in her eyes, a child clutching her hand, and belongings hastily stashed in a plastic bag. No matter the circumstances, we’re here. For more than 35 years, YWCA Evanston/ North Shore has been a light in the darkness, providing safety and resources for domestic violence survivors and their families. And today, we are developing innovative strategies to confront domestic violence on multiple levels, from crisis intervention to long-term solutions for ending relationship violence.

WE ARE CHANGING LIVES Stable housing gives survivors time. In 2017, we will launch an innovative new longer-term housing program for survivors of domestic violence, one of the few of its kind in the state of Illinois. This is life changing. We can offer families more than crisis intervention— we can provide the resources and time they need to transform their lives and break free from dependence on their abusers. Our new 16-unit apartment building for survivors and their children is part of a broader program that includes financial education and job training that will help survivors secure employment and stable housing as they work to build new, independent lives. At the same time, we recognize that to end domestic violence, we must confront the issue from all sides. In 2016, we started a batterer’s intervention program, which holds abusers accountable for their behavior, educates them about relationship dynamics, and equips them with conflict resolution skills so they have alternatives to violence. Trauma informed care builds safety and trust. We are training all of our domestic violence staff in “trauma informed care,” a state-of-the-art practice that trains caregivers to understand and respond to the effects of trauma on survivors. Five core values: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment, will be built into every step of every client’s recovery, and, within the next year, into the culture of our entire workplace.

 Because of the generosity of our donors, YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s domestic violence services helped almost 800 women and families achieve freedom from

violence. Your support helps women and their children get safe and stay safe.

IN THEIR VOICE

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING, EDUCATION AND PREVENTION

WE ARE OPENING MINDS We’re disrupting the cycle of violence. Children who witness abuse in their homes or observe it in popular culture may think it’s okay. Teens between the ages of 16 and 19 are 3.5 times more likely than the general public to be victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. Girls are significantly more likely to experience severe abuse or sexual assault than boys, and less than 10 percent of teens who experience abuse tell an authority figure. We stop relationship violence by helping children develop the social and emotional skills they need early on, before behaviors and patterns get entrenched. We’re on-site in schools at all levels. Our violence prevention facilitators are in Evanston, Skokie, Morton Grove and Des Plaines teaching empathy, problem solving, impulse control, and anti-bullying to elementary school children. They’re in middle school classrooms helping adolescents develop a strong sense of self, cope with peer pressure, and recognize and avoid gossip and cyberbullying. And they’re in high schools helping teens understand what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, teaching them how to set boundaries, and giving them resources they can access to stay safe.

“WERE IT NOT FOR THE EXISTENCE OF THIS PROGRAM, I DO NOT KNOW WHERE I WOULD BE TODAY. WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS HOW GRATEFUL I AM TO EVERYONE AT YWCA. YOUR ABIDING PRESENCE AND COUNSEL, THROUGH ALL THE TURMOIL AND DIFFICULTIES, WAS COMFORTING AND STABILIZING AS WELL AS ENCOURAGING. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THERE— KNOWN AND UNKNOWN TO ME — WHO CHANGED MY LIFE AND MY SON’S LIFE FOR THE BETTER.” Tracy, a domestic violence survivor

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING, EDUCATION AND PREVENTION

Our intervention also includes programming specifically geared to training young men to recognize violence against women and become allied with women. In 2016, in response to the enactment of Erin’s Law, we launched child sexual abuse prevention classes in Evanston School District 65. Erin’s Law mandates sexual abuse education and prevention curriculum in public schools statewide for students in prekindergarten through 12th grade.

Our Violence Prevention programs include working with local colleges and universities to address campus dating violence, and provide training and resources for both students, faculty, administrators, and security

INCLUSIVE SWIM PROGRAMS

“SWIMMING HAS HELPED ME DISCOVER WHO I AM. IT’S GIVEN ME SO MUCH MENTAL STRENGTH AND EMPOWERED ME TO

IN THEIR VOICE

OVERCOME SO MANY OBSTACLES I HAVE FACED IN LIFE. IT HAS TAUGHT ME TO BE DETERMINED, TO WORK HARD, AND TO NEVER GIVE UP.” Amelia, Flying Fish swimmer

WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! Every child should learn to swim. America’s long history of discrimination and segregation in swimming has resulted in large disparities between children who know how to swim and those who don’t. Recent studies show that 70 percent of African-American children and 60 percent of Hispanic/Latino children in the U.S. cannot swim. In addition, African-American children drown at a rate nearly three times higher than their Caucasian peers. We are changing these statistics and saving lives. We believe that all children, regardless of ethnicity, race, gender, shape, size, physical ability or financial resources should reap the lifelong benefits of swimming – the most important being safety. YWCA’s Flying Fish aquatics program confronts the issue of water safety head on by

reaching out to families of color, because research shows that when children learn to swim, they are more likely to pass on that skill when they become parents. Generations become safer in the water and enjoy all the opportunities and experiences that come with knowing how to swim. Our swim program is mission driven. As a lead partner in Evanston Swims!, we offer free swimming lessons in the pool and water safety instruction in the classroom to all second graders in Evanston public schools. Working diligently to make connections throughout our local communities, we partner with community organizations, summer camps, and physicians (who often “prescribe” free swimming lessons through our programs) to reach as many families as we can. The YWCA Flying Fish swim team also is mission-driven, focusing on inclusivity and breaking down cultural and economic barriers. Boys and girls—from all backgrounds— train together, compete head-to-head, and develop mutual respect. And, because girls on the team are valued as athletes, they develop a healthy sense of self, helping them grow into strong, resilient women.

 Because of the generosity of our donors, YWCA Evanston/North Shore gave over 700 aquatics scholarships to help children learn how to swim in 2016. Your support ensures that all children in our communities can be healthy and safe, while having fun.

RACIAL JUSTICE AND CIVIL RIGHTS

WE ARE OVERCOMING RACISM WITH TRUTH

In the past year in particular, people have become more aware of the danger of being silent. More people see the value of speaking out and of standing in solidarity with those whose lives have been shaped by the color of their skin or the economic status of their neighborhoods. More people have engaged in deepening their understanding of how America does and does not work for all its citizens. Our mission is to eliminate racism and empower women, and we believe we will only transform the lives of women when we also tackle racism. We believe in challenging racism with truth. Change happens when people get involved and speak openly, honestly and courageously. Only with honest conversations and active engagement can we begin to realize the goal of an equitable, inclusive and just society where all have access to the best our communities have to offer.

Together, we can transform our communities. We are leading the way in making our communities more equitable, facilitating discussions on racial justice and civil rights, and creating opportunities for people to engage. Our racial equity programs bring people together to learn new ways of thinking, talking, identifying and confronting racism. We provide hands-on anti-racism training and workshops that guide institutions and community groups in becoming more equitable and inclusive. We offer programs that catalyze honest conversations about race and racism, giving participants a new vocabulary and helping them grow in their understanding of each other. The Stand Against Racism and Race Against Hate allow us to see the broad range of people in our communities who are committed to working toward equity. We need each other’s support to stay in the struggle, have the hard conversations, and do the self-assessments necessary to transform ourselves and our communities. We’re pushing for creative solutions. In 2016, we took another step and launched our first ever Racial Justice Summit, which brought people of all ages together to deepen understanding of their own racial identities, develop skills to work for change, formulate action plans, and engage with others to create strategies to make our communities more just. Becoming more equitable empowers everyone. In institutions, our programming enables organizations to hire and retain top level talent, bring out the best in leaders and staff, and ensure that all are valued, so they contribute and perform at higher levels. YWCA collaborates with institutions like Northwestern University, helping participants

in the staff/faculty Change Makers program develop skills to talk more confidently with students about race, speak up at meetings about diversity and inclusion, and look actively for ways to make positive changes.

 Because of the generosity of our donors, YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s racial justice programs encouraged 11,000 individuals in Evanston, Wilmette, Skokie, Morton Grove and Niles to think deeply, speak honestly and work collectively for racial justice in 2016. Your support makes our communities more equitable.

WE ARE FUELING OPPORTUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION

Women comprise more than half of today’s workforce. One in four women is the sole or primary breadwinner for her family. An overwhelming majority of mothers with children under 18 years of age are working. There is no doubt that women are central to the economic well-being for their families and play a critical role in our nation’s economic prosperity. Women of all ages and backgrounds often struggle with earning enough to be economically stable. YWCA Evanston/ North Shore is a place where women can improve their financial knowledge, their employability skills, their selfconfidence, and, ultimately, their lives.

IN THEIR VOICE

“I THOUGHT I WOULD HATE TALKING ABOUT MONEY. BUT NOW I KNOW A LOT ABOUT BUDGETING AND BANKS, AND I UNDERSTAND HOW THAT WILL HELP ME LIVE ON MY OWN. I DON’T NEED TO RELY ON ANYONE ELSE.” Irene, a Financial Education participant

We empower by teaching self-sufficiency. We help women move from dependence to independence by providing financial education classes that teach budgeting, building credit, and saving, so they are equipped to make their own choices and live self-sufficient lives. We offer free money management classes in both English and Spanish to low- and middle-income women in our communities and to survivors of domestic violence. We also have built partnerships to deliver financial education to the City of Evanston’s General Assistance Program, Niles Township ELL Parent Center, CEDA, Evanston Township High School Latino Parent Group, Evanston/Skokie School District 65 Head Start program, Connections for the Homeless, and high school students employed by Curt’s Café in Evanston. Support comes in many ways. As part of our new longer-term housing program for domestic violence survivors, we also help women secure stable employment by teaching job readiness skills such as developing resumes, completing job applications and preparing for interviews. Our goal is to help women take the necessary steps to secure employment that will sustain their families. YWCA plays a vital role throughout our communities in raising awareness about issues impacting women and girls, both locally and globally.

 Because of the generosity of our donors, YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s economic empowerment programs helped almost 230 women obtain economic sustainability in 2016. Your support enables women to gain new skills, secure employment and achieve

financial self-sufficiency.
