Dear Friends, Human needs are universal. We all want to be treated equitably and with respect, to have opportunities to advance, to feel safe in our homes and on our streets, and to build secure and productive lives for our families. For women, and especially for women of color, these needs are often unmet. This is what drives the work of YWCA Evanston/North Shore each and every day. As a social justice organization, we focus on ensuring the health and safety of women and children, advancing racial justice and civil rights, and providing all women with opportunities for economic advancement. But we couldn’t do it without you. Your generous support makes it all possible. It is only because of you that fifteen women and their children are now living safely in Bridges, our new longer-term housing facility for survivors and their children. It is only because of you that they are getting counseling, job training, and a supportive living arrangement that fosters relationships and community. Because of you, more men throughout the North Shore are learning how to speak up and speak out against domestic violence and sexual assault; more women are learning about managing money and working toward more stable economic futures; community members are coming together to talk about race and take action to make our communities more equitable; and children from a variety of abilities and backgrounds are participating in our swim programs. YWCA is not just a place or a collection of buildings. It is a movement built upon the principles we can all agree on and the values we cherish. That is why we say your mission is our mission, and we’re in this together. Thank you for steadfastly supporting YWCA Evanston/North Shore in so many ways throughout the year 2016-2017. It is our honor and privilege to work with you and for you.

YOU ARE PROVIDING A SAFE HARBOR FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAM
The voice on the other end of our 24hour crisis line might be a mother wanting to know how she can talk her adult daughter into leaving an abusive husband. Or it could be a woman who’s been married for 30 years asking how she can break free from abuse. Often it is a frightened young mother fleeing an abusive situation, who needs a safe place to stay. There is no one face of domestic violence. It cuts across ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and age, and it affects one in four women in the United States. No matter who reaches out for help or when, YWCA Evanston/North Shore is here. For nearly four decades, we’ve provided not only a safe harbor, but also a host of resources to help women and their families escape from harmful relationships and rebuild their lives. Your support makes our support possible.

YOU ARE OFFERING HOPE... “Someone will come to our door with nothing but what they are wearing. They may have children with them. They want safe shelter, but they need so much more. We give them the opportunity to breathe, but we also help them decide what their next steps are going to be. These are women we all know. Women like your sister, your aunt or your mother. We see more younger women and minorities, but violence cuts across all groups. I think about one client who no one would’ve believed was in an abusive marriage. She was a woman who had been married for many years, raised her children and put them through school. Now that they were out of the house, the abuse had escalated. As we talked through her story, it was clear she experienced emotional abuse throughout her marriage. But it had elevated to physical violence after the children left. This was someone who thought that she had done everything right. I was grateful I was in a role where I could offer help.”

...CHANGING LIVES... “When we first meet with a client, we want to support her in understanding her rights and what the lengthy court process is like. We make sure we explore all the options she has, including an Order of Protection, and we support clients in making whatever decision works for them. The courthouse can be a pretty intimidating place. It’s busy. It’s loud. It’s chaotic. If you’re a person who’s experienced an abusive episode, it can be overwhelming. It isn’t uncommon for a victim to just want to turn around and leave, and not follow through with an Order of Protection. It can be too much to handle. Our job is to let the client know she’s not alone. When we’re in the courtroom, we stand with the client and we’re often the only physical barrier between her and the abuser. We want her to know that we’re there for her and will continue to offer whatever support she needs.”
Jennifer Allen, Court Advocate “My life is definitely improving. It's been a long time since I have truly looked forward to a new year coming. I'm filled with anticipation, hope and love. Within the last year instead of just existing and getting through the day, I began to feel like I wanted to start to live again and I see that that's a possibility, I see things improving each month as time goes on. You have no idea how much YWCA has helped my life. I am truly blessed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Resident of Bridges, YWCA's longer-term housing for survivors of domestic violence

...AND CHANGING BEHAVIORS “Our Men’s Leadership Project grew out of our work with young men. The young guys feel so much societal pressure, and they’re really influenced by media stereotypes. If we ask them to describe what a real man or strong man is, they say things like having a lot of money or power, or being a celebrity or having a lot of girlfriends. But when we ask them to describe a strong man in their own lives, they will say something like, ‘my granddad because he’s caring and he’s always been there for me.’ Once we start having conversations like this, the young guys start seeing manhood in a new way. The Men’s Leadership Project is exciting because studies from other communities show that once men learn how to talk with each other and learn how to stand up for women, violence and sexual assault decrease.”
Antonio Rice, Violence Prevention Educator Our Violence Prevention programs include working with male leaders, as well as students at all levels -- from elementary school through high school -- on a variety of subjects related to domestic and sexual violence prevention, including bullying/cyber-bullying, child sexual abuse, dating violence, domestic

INCLUSIVE SWIM PROGRAMS
YOU ARE MAKING WATER SAFETY AND SWIMMING ACCESSIBLE TO ALL... America’s long history of discrimination and segregation in swimming pools has kept many African-American children from learning to swim. In fact, studies show that African-American children drown at a rate nearly five times higher than their Caucasian peers. Our Flying Fish aquatics program confronts this problem head on by reaching out to children of color, teaching them to be safe in the water, and encouraging them to progress to the swim team. Studies show that this mission-driven approach is working. In July 2017, the USA Swimming Foundation reported a 5-10 percent improvement in overall swimming ability among America’s youth since 2010. Your support makes it possible for Flying Fish aquatics to offer scholarships not only for swim lessons, but also for participation on the swim team, which provides opportunities for boys and girls to train together, compete head-tohead, and develop into resilient, empowered young people who respect each other.

“Carla started lessons when she was ten. On the first day she told me she knew how to swim. She told me she can jump in and she’ll be fine, so I let her jump where it’s about five feet. But I was ready to get her. She jumped in and she’s struggling a bit so I go and pull her to the side. She told me right there she knows she has a lot to learn. I’ve been with Carla the whole way and last year she wrote a story about me for school - about how I changed her life. She wrote that I made her want to improve her skills and become a real swimmer. It’s amazing how much she’s progressed in just a year and a half. She was so excited when I gave her the news that she could join the swim team. She looked at me and said, ‘what?’ like she didn’t believe it. Since she joined the team she comes all the time and works really hard -- and she’s a good swimmer. I still have the story she wrote about me on my fridge.”

RACIAL JUSTICE AND CIVIL RIGHTS
YOU ARE CHALLENGING RACISM WITH HONESTY
At YWCA Evanston/North Shore, we believe that all people have the right to be heard, and we believe in the value of listening. We also believe that education exposes truth and leads to greater understanding and ultimately, to action. Our mission is to eliminate racism and empower women, for we know we cannot transform the lives of all women and build stronger families and communities unless we also tackle racism. Your support allows us to provide opportunities for people to learn, listen, and speak openly and honestly about their real-life experiences with racism, and then to take action to make our communities and our workplaces more equitable and just. It is only through active, intentional engagement with each other that we can continue to help the arc of the universe bend toward justice.

...AND GIVING PEOPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW “I remember an African-American man from one of our workshop series. My co-facilitator, who was an African-American woman, was talking about what it's like to have race always in the picture. She started to say, ‘It just feels. . .' and this man quietly finished her sentence saying, ‘relentless.’ Then he said, ‘I’ve spent my life convincing myself this wasn't true, that if I just continued to be a good guy and did all the right things, I would be accepted.’ He was coming to a powerful understanding of the internalized racism he was feeling. As he spoke, I thought, here's a successful, 35-year-old man opening up and describing what’s churning inside of him and what he’s working on. And the white people in the room understood that this was something they had never dealt with. You could hear a pin drop. We ended up adding another week to this workshop series because the group wanted to keep the conversation going. They knew they were on the edge of understanding each other in a new way. That’s pretty powerful.”
Eileen Hogan Heineman, Director, Racial Justice Institute "People walk away from YWCA Racial Justice programs in a more empowered way to deal with issues in their own home and their own neighborhood and it has an impact everywhere. It is a very powerful tool."
Marion Flynn, racial justice program participant
RACIAL JUSTICE TRAINING
“The YWCA is able to ask the tough questions. And they are able to allow room and space in a very comfortable environment to have those discussions so that people feel comfortable and courageous. They bring different people to the table to have difficult conversations around equity and around racial justice that Evanston has never had the platform to do before.”

YOU ARE TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION...
Women of all ages and backgrounds often struggle with securing the resouces they need for economic stability. Moreover, women who are victims of domestic abuse often are victims of financial abuse, which puts them in positions of dependence on their abusers. Financial abuse prevents victims from acquiring, using, or maintaining financial resources, making it hard for them to live independent lives. With your support, YWCA Evanston/North Shore is turning the tables for women in our communities. We provide financial education and personal coaching as well as job training and housing assistance. And we support women every step of the way as they grow their knowledge, improve their skills, and move from dependence to independence.

But when I handed apartment keys over to the first tenants at Bridges, they looked at me with wide eyes and said, ‘This is my key?’ I said, ‘Yes, this is your key. This is your new home.’ It was just so simple, how the power of one key can change someone’s life. I was surprised it was so empowering and meaningful.”
Iris Barrios, Housing Occupancy and Employment Specialist “I see clients come to the first class stressed, then at the end of the class they are much more relaxed. We have a graduation after the course and when they receive their portfolio and their certificate of completion they have a different attitude toward finances and they celebrate and they are more hopeful that they can achieve the financial goals they have ."
