Dear Friends: Our mission and our work can seem like a bit of a puzzle. Domestic violence services, racial justice, aquatics, violence prevention, financial literacy…all valuable programs and services that impact thousands in our communities, but how do they fit together? And what about our mission, eliminating racism and empowering women? What do those seemingly bifurcated parts have to do with one another?

We often think and talk about our different programs and services as though they were silos, and sometimes, we admit, it doesn’t seem as though they are connected. But they are. In fact, our programs, staff and board are all connected to the same guiding and deeply rooted commitment to racial and gender equity and justice.

Dara Richardson-Heron, the CEO of the YWCA USA, articulates “Gender inequality, racial injustice and lack of economic empowerment, when encountered in isolation and certainly when encountered together, create an unequal playing field that has the real potential to limit the education achievement, economic potential and overall success attained by girls, women and ultimately their families.” This is the lens through which we see our mission and work.

We can’t achieve racial and gender equity and justice by working in isolation.

Our community collaborations are another critical piece of the puzzle, and we are grateful and honored to work with so many committed partners. It is only when we collectively harness our thinking, resources, and commitment that we can truly develop and deepen our impact.

And of course, without you, our donors, we wouldn’t be here.

Because of you, this past year we have been able to extend our reach and expand our work, helping even more women, children and families in our communities. We are so grateful for your partnership.

Working to keep women and children safe takes the engagement of all parts of our community. We partner with hospitals, police departments, social service and community organizations, and the courts to help women get safe, stay safe and live violence free lives.

In order to reach women who would most benefit from our financial literacy workshops, we partner with community organizations like Evanston Public Library, District 65, and GreenPath Debt Solutions, whose expertise in credit repair enhances the impact of our programs.

This past year our new partnership with Y.O.U. brought the expertise of both organizations together to reach young men in our community to engage them in the effort to end relationship violence.

Teaching every child to swim takes a community of staff, volunteers, donors, and community groups coming together to make it happen.

As a leading partner with Evanston Swims! (an Evanston 150 initiative), we collaborated with District 65, McGaw YMCA and Evanston Community Foundation to make sure all school children learn to be safe in the water.

in memory of oswald roper YWCA Flying Fish Assistant Aquatics Director, 1994-2013

Oswald “Oz” Roper, a swim instructor, coach, and caretaker of the our aquatic facilities, died on January 2, 2013, six months shy of his twentieth anniversary at the YWCA and nine months before his sixtieth birthday.

A dedicated teacher, people recall Oz in the water or pacing along the deck laughing, splashing, teasing and goading his students to do better. He always prioritized the kids and seemed happiest when he was working with them.

“I love it,” Oz once said. “I get so much satisfaction out of helping kids build morale and emerge as winners, not necessarily by winning races but by setting goals for themselves and accomplishing them.”

When Oz started teaching swimming in the United States, he compared it to his native Jamaica, where he described learning to swim as a “prerequisite for life. But in the U.S.,” he said, “there is a history of exclusion that keeps many African American children from the water. I find this so sad because we live beside a lake that could be as much fun as the beaches in Jamaica, but you don’t see many African American families at the beach. I am glad we are working to change that, and I can see the results already in our great YWCA Flying Fish Program.”

This past May, in honor of Oz, our YWCA staff and high school swimmers participated in two concurrent 24-hour swim relays to raise funds for swimming scholarships for families who cannot afford the cost of swim lessons or swim team participation. The relays raised $10,000.

In September, the YWCA honored Oswald Roper’s legacy with the Flying Fish Aquatics program by renaming the Aquatics Scholarship Fund in his name. It is now called the “Oz Fund,” and contributions may be directed toward either aquatics scholarships or improvements to the YWCA’s aquatics facilities. The fund is also the beneficiary of a significant contribution from the memorial fund established by his family and friends when he died.

Oz’s presence is greatly missed, but his legacy lives on in the children who are welcomed to our pools and the care we take in maintaining and improving the facilities in which they learn.
