Growing up in Central America, Errol Daly learned early that nothing is given. “Everything is earned,”
he insists. This is a core value that followed Errol to America and into his career. Decades from his days playing soccer and “tip and go” in his native Belize, Errol is now the master jewelry polisher and finisher at Zachary’s, and owner Steve Samaras’ best friend and right arm.

Errol’s journey to Zachary’s is largely due to his wife,
Gwenda, who enlisted in the Navy and was eventually stationed at the Washington Navy Yard. After stumbling into the jewelry industry on the recommendation of a cousin, Errol answered a life-changing newspaper ad that brought him to Annapolis 34 years ago.
To understand Errol’s expertise, you’ve got to understand the
intricacies of jewelry polishing and finishing. Polishers use an array of machines, tools, and buffing wheels to remove uneven surfaces and contour the cast metal. Only a skilled polisher is truly able to unlock the vibrant beauty of a piece of fine jewelry. “No single stage in manufacturing jewelry makes as big of an impact as polishing and finishing,” Steve says. “I’m a shiner. Errol is the polisher.”
Starting with 16 showcases, 14 of which were empty, Errol and Steve’s beginnings were humble, to say the least. Through their
continued success, it is evident that while nothing has been given, everything has been earned. Errol and his family recently spent his birthday on the beaches of Bermuda at Steve’s vacation home. “To be able to share my home with my family and closest friend is so important to me and my wife, Challie,” Steve explains. To which Errol adds, “And he has always treated me like a brother.”

Marco Bicego rings. First of all, rings are always my favorite! Marco Bicego rings are incredibly gorgeous, yellow gold is so great for fashion rings and I just can’t get enough. When my husband says, “Another ring, Nicki?” I always respond with, “Well, I’ve got 10 fingers!” Annapolis native, wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend. I am raising two beautiful tomboys who know good jewelry. “Mommy, can I wear your married ring today?” -Reese almost 3 years old. I love craft beer, beach days and fancy dinners. Nothing makes me happier than a cup of coffee with no plans on a Sunday morning. I am a major sports Nicki fan who is admittedly too superstitious. When the Ravens went on their amazing Super Bowl run a few years ago, I wore the same necklace out of the case (a bezel set round brilliant stationary white gold pendant) every single game. Ohhh, the Gucci Horsebit collection. A wise woman once told me, “If you don’t want a mall girl, raise a stall girl.” My first started riding when she was 3, my second when she was 5. Our weekends were spent at barns riding and competing. This beautiful, iconic collection will always bring me back to those cherished times spent with my girls. Single mom raising 4 amazing teens - they truly make my world go around. We are animal lovers and spoil our rescues - Lyla and Dewey and have begun fostering pups. After graduating from Towson University, I moved to Annapolis and have loved living in this beautiful town. Having traveled around the world and across this great nation, I can honestly say we live in a fantastic spot! I am thrilled to be a part of the Zachary's family as I ready myself for the empty nest and begin the next chapter of my life. The Golden Bridge timepiece is my favorite piece in the store. When you’re in the diamond industry, it’s good to know where your diamonds are coming from. But what most people don’t know is that nine-tenths of the world’s natural diamonds pass through India.

In 1992, Steve Samaras, Founder of Zachary’s Jewelers, decided there had to be a better way to sell diamonds. So he traveled 8,000 miles, determined to change the price people had to pay for diamonds in Annapolis.
“So by the time a diamond gets to a Zachary’s customer, only two people have touched it, not six.”
Nestled on India’s west coast is Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra and one of the largest diamond trading hubs in the world. Here, a handful diamond sightholders purchase rough uncut diamonds direct from the mines. From there, most diamonds are sold to A, passed along to B, traded to C, handed over to D, and distributed to E, where they are purchased by the customer. Samaras knew he could eliminate much of that process by dealing directly with a sightholder, but it would take cutting a check for half a million dollars. So by the time a diamond gets to a Zachary’s customer, only two people have touched it, not six.

After over 20 years abroad, Roberto Coin returned
to his roots in Italy, and it was not long before his wise eye appreciated the uniqueness of the home he left when he was
very young. This uniqueness, expressed by the architectural virtuosity, the passion for creative design and the artisans’ care for manufacture, made Italy the point of reference for quality and beauty in the world.
During a visit in Vicenza, renowned as the city of
gold, for the first time Roberto Coin got involved in the jewelry industry and recognized the magnetic allure and elegance a jewel can represent. This moment marked in the story the very beginning of his new adventure in creativity and his entrance in the world of jewelry.
The success was immediate and the brand soon
distributed in over 60 countries, where even today people consider his jewels as unedited and symbolic new codes of elegance. His aim is to add uniqueness to every woman and avoid a homogeneous style by creating over 600 new models every year, like dedicating a different jewel to each woman’s individuality.
Positivity, love and enthusiasm are the values upon which Roberto Coin has built both his personal and professional life. In fact, it was considered by ancient Egyptians to be a kind of amulet that in contact with the skin bestows prosperity, happiness and longevity. Five years ago, Zachary’s started a tradition that celebrates some very special people in our community: Mothers. Every spring, hundreds of local area 5th graders from 20 elementary schools design pieces of jewelry inspired by their moms. After the winning designs are selected, three pieces are brought to life by our jewelers and are presented to the winners to give to their moms as a one-of-a-kind Mother's Day gift. “Before you really notice it, your children will be grown and what precious reminders of their childhood these pieces will be for their moms,” said Daphne Foreman of Zachary’s. Since it began, the contest continues to draw attention, and was even featured on CNN/Headline News. Steve Samaras, owner of Zachary’s, said “It’s so much fun to see the energy and thought the kids put into their designs.” Steve also added “This is a great event which we invite not only the students and their families but also encourage local business owners to participate in.” Most recently, Kristin Falk of Benfield Elementary designed a gold beaded necklace with a natural crystal pendant for her mother, Kathy Falk; Lillian Evans of Pasadena Elementary designed a pendent with precious and semiprecious stones for her mom, Rebecca Evans; and Clark Ridenhour incorporated Morse code into his piece to express his love for his mom, Susan Ridenhour. “A sweet after effect of the contest,” Steve says, “is that, many times, moms continue to come in throughout the year and ask us to custom make their children’s designs.”

It’s easy to make assumptions about Steve Samaras. As the owner of a successful jewelry store in the heart of downtown Annapolis, you
might assume his drive is measured in dollars. But Steve doesn’t live an extravagant life. At least not in the way you’d expect.
To Steve, more important than personal gain is knowing that the people around him are taken care of. So what has made Steve show
up seven days a week for the past 34 years? “A means of providing for my community, my customers, my team and my family.”
To understand Steve, you’ve got to start at the beginning, where you’ll find a strong family upbringing. He credits his parents’ small
business’ success with a combination of his mother’s social responsibility and his father’s strong work ethic, which also personally define Steve and his business model at Zachary’s.
And business and family continue to coexist for the Samaras family today. In the front of the house, you’ll find Evangeline, Steve’s
youngest sister and sounding board. “She’s my voice of logic. She’s reasonable and socially conscious, which she gets from my mother.” In Severna Park, you’ll find his other sister, Daphne. “She’s incredibly organized and has my father’s strong work ethic.”
In the back of the house, you’ll find Challie, the love of Steve’s life. “She’s the warmest, most genuine person I’ve ever known.”
Ironically, Challie’s jewelry collection only consisted of a pair of earrings and a Pulsar watch when they met. “She’s no fuss, no muss. And I’m a lucky man to have her.”
It’s clear that this family business knows what it’s really all about. And in fact, Steve’s life is actually quite extravagant… But in the
very best of ways. Just ask the people who know him.
