February 2012—Time To Turn A New Page The roller-coaster ride never seems to end these days. Whether you are talking about the ups-and-downs in the weather (this has been one of the mildest Winters I can EVER remember), or the stops-andstarts in the economy, we are clearly living in different times. I am proud to say that I think that our family business has adapted very well to the changing times, and the month of February is always a very exciting time for us. • It gives us a chance to “clean house” and really incentivize our customers to scoop us some hot deals with discounts up to 60%! • It’s the time of year when we do a lot of our wine travel to get excited and re-energized for all the new releases hitting the market in the upcoming months. Brian and I already toured through Italy last month and got the low-down on Brunello/Barbaresco/ Barolo and Jeremy & Rob have just gotten a full preview of 2010 Burgundies...rough work, I know! • Worry-free purchasing. If you don’t want your order delivered any time soon due to the weather, we’ll store it for you free of charge for the next 3 months. • As is always the case with us, we have more to tell you and deals to promote than we can fit in these 48 pages. While the Gazette is a good start, there is A LOT more deal-making going on at Zachys that you should be aware of. Much of it happens over e-mail, so if you are not already on the lists, now would be a good time to join up. Reach out to our customer service team to sign up at cs@zachys.com or give us a call 800.723.0241. Let us know what areas of the wine world you would like to be kept up to speed on. Roederer Is More Than Cristal! Champagne Louis Roederer is hands down one of the most consistent and better BIG NAME Champagne Houses.
MOR E THA N JU S CRI STA T L!
Personally, when it comes to big name Champagne Houses my two go-to Houses are Louis Roederer and Bollinger. However, the Roederer quality stretches beyond everything that is done in Champagne but also to Anderson Valley with their Roederer Estate. The top “champagne” from Roederer Estate is the l’Ermitage...aka the Cristal of California and both the Brut Vintage and Brut Vintage Rosé are absolutely stunning and put many true Champagnes in the same price and quality range to shame. Plus to top it all off...if you are looking for one of the best BIG NAME Créme de la Créme of Champagne, do not miss the Louis Roederer 2004 Cristal. This amazing legendary cuvee is fantastic and the 2004 has scored as one of the highest 2004 Champagnes released so far with Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate rating this higher than the magnificent 2002 at 97 points. We are offering one of the best prices in the country considering the average price on winesearcher.com is $214 per bottle. But in case you haven’t got the gist of what I am saying here...there is MUCH, MUCH more to Champagne Roederer than Cristal!!! JN

“The NV Brut Premier is a gorgeous wine that stands head and shoulders above the vast majority of wines in its price range. Apparently, it is quite possible to make great Champagne that doesn’t cost a small fortune. Ripe pears, smoke, spices, dried flowers and herbs are some of the many nuances that emerge from the glass. The Brut Premier shows lovely mid-palate depth and fabulous overall balance. Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon has done it again. This is a fabulous Brut Premier. The Brut Premier is based on the 2007 vintage, with approximately 20% 2006 wines and 10% older reserves going back to 1996...92.” WA 11/11.
“Very harmonious, with the finely detailed texture and delicate acidity providing a crystalline frame for notes of dried cherry, wild strawberry, light biscuit, lemon zest and spice. This is all about subtlety and grace...94.” WS 12/11. “The 2006 Brut Rose is flat-out delicious. It boasts gorgeous inner perfume, striking fruit and exceptional overall balance. This is a hugely delicious wine that at once shows the delicate and more powerful sides of Rose Champagne, if that makes sense. The wine can be enjoyed as an aperitif, but it also has more than enough richness to stand up to a range of foods. I loved it. The NV Brut Rose is 70% Pinot Noir from Cumieres and 30% Chardonnay. The Chardonnay was added to a saignee of Pinot Noir before fermentation....93.” WA 11/11.

“This wine combines remarkable freshness with elegant richness, so that even after it’s been open for several days, the flavors are still evolving, the fruit still brisk as an autumn breeze. It needs that time for the blunt chalkiness of the structure to mellow, for the cool apple and pear flavors to develop and lengthen. Built to age, this is an exceptional vintage of L’Ermitage...93.” W&S 12/08.

“Racy, a term often used to describe Champagne, rarely applies to California sparkling wine. Roederer Estate’s second release of L’Ermitage Rose is one of the few exceptions – racy, as well as delicate, layered, savory and gently sweet. It’s a compelling take on a clean sparkler from the California coast, with the feel of cold ocean and something of the taste of the sea creating a tension and motion in the wine...color is as brilliant as the wine itself. This is a breakthrough wine for California, and perhaps the ultimate match for Dungeness crab. Don’t miss it...95.” W&S 12/09.
“A pretty note of apple blossom runs through this elegant Champagne, which is bright and juicy, offering flavors of green and yellow apple, tangerine and ground ginger, with a hint of graham cracker. Shows lovely texture, with a mouthwatering finish...92.” WS 11/11.

Louis Roederer Cristal 2004 (97WA/97W&S) {#348914} ....................... 240.00 “The 2004 Brut Cristal has put on quite a bit of weight since I first tasted it earlier this year. It is a powerful, structured Cristal layered with considerable fruit. Chardonnay seems to play the leading role in 2004, at least today. Cristal is often accessible young, but that is far from the case here. This is a serious, painfully young Cristal that will require considerable patience. Readers who are willing to spend some time with the wine today will find a super-impressive, complete Cristal. The 2004 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay...97.” WA 12/10. “The energy in this wine recalls the 2002 Cristal (I wrote “energy” three times in my notes.) In 2004, its explosive. The wine is saturated with flavor, from floral notes of rose to pale limestone and equally pale fruit. The flavors keep going, as if striding through doorway after doorway in a limestone cellar, the Champenois equivalent of Get Smart. Built to age as gracefully as Agent 99, this won’t disappoint if you open it now with scallop crudo...97.” W&S 12/11.

z “This is a breathtaking set of wines from Rodolphe Peters. Readers can’t go wrong with any of these four wines.” Antonio Galloni, the Wine Advocate 12/11 Calling all champagne fanatics...the Champagne of Pierre Peters once again (as always) OVER-DELIVERS!!! In Antonio Galloni’s recent posting of Champagne reviews and commentary there does not appear to be one single Champagne House, big or small, that has consistently done better than Pierre Peters. The commentary and 92 to 96 point reviews from Antonio Galloni are simply put... MARVELOUS!!! If you love Blanc de Blancs Champagne, this is the Champagne House for you. Long considered one of the benchmarks for 100% Chardonnay based Champagne, Rodolphe Peters is amazingly only increasing the heights that his Champagne House has achieved. JN

“The 2004 Brut Millesime Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons is stratospheric. This is a cool, inward Chetillons endowed with breathtaking finesse. The 2004 is noticeably more vibrant and focused than the decidedly exuberant 2002. Ripe pears, almonds and jasmine are some of the notes that flesh out in this pure, energetic wine. Hints of chalk, smoke and ash wrap around the intense finish. This is easily one of the very finest of the 2004s that has been released so far. Peters’ objective with Les Chetillons is to make wine that expresses terroir rather than vintage. In 2004 Peters used only two of his three plots in Les Chetillons, as he wasn’t totally happy with the way one of the parcels responded in terms of the high yields that were typical that year. That level of attention to detail goes a long way in explaining why the 2004 is so exceptional...96.” AG 12/11.
90pt BUBBLY Only $12.75 and it’s made by a GREAT Champagne House! Scharffenberger from Anderson Valley is an excellent Sparkling Wine property that truly makes Champagne-like wines. This property has been owned and operated by Champagne Louis Roederer for some years now and their involvement and improvements have made Scharffenberger one of the best values in California Sparkling today. In fact the Wine Spectator recently called the Scharffenberger a “SMART BUY” with a great 90 point review. “Smart Buys...Bright aromas of green apple and lime lead to vibrant, layered flavors of citrus, anise and creamy vanilla...90.” WS 12/11. As you may recall, we have been singing the praises of Scharffenberger all Fall and we hedged our bets thinking that this Sparkling Wine would be on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wine of the Year. Well as you probably know by now it was our other bet on domestic sparkling that made the Top 100 (Gruet Blanc de Noirs from New Mexico) and not this gem. JN

z 98pt 2002 Vintage Champagne Under $100 We’ve Been Telling You this is Great! The December issue of Wine & Spirits Magazine had the Year’s Best Champagnes on the cover. Diving into the issue the first thing I see… Bollinger Grande Année 2002 - this was my pick this holiday season for the ‘Tete de Cuvee’ Bubbly to buy…98 points!!! I’m telling you this is hands down the best BIG NAME Tete de Cuvee bottling I have tried this year and I’ve tried them all. From Dom Perignon (by the way same issue 96pts 2002 Vintage) to Krug 1998 & 2000 …Bollinger is the one that I keep going back to. Earlier this year when we first offered the Grande Année I told you of the near perfect score Jancis Robinson gave the wine (19/20), well this incredible 98 point review only reaffirms that is one of the best Champagnes of the year. Especially at Under $100 per bottle!!! This is the one BIG NAME Champagne that you should be stocking up on as there are not many others under $100.

“There is Champagne, and then there is 2002 Bollinger. This wine makes me dizzy, stammering in cross-eyed bliss. Taking a step back, the sustained chord of flavor comes into focus, revealing a limestone honey: scents of acacia, marzipan, apricot and golden citrus...the wine’s richness softens the structural grandeur of the vintage, which is buoyed in a mineral bath of power. This will reward another ten or 20 years of age, and the bottles that remain will likely only feed the wine’s legend...98.” W&S 12/11.
Grande Année Rosé 2002 (97W&S) {#349646} .................................. 225.00 “The sheer intensity and power of this wine is awesome, an almost violent red from the addtion of Coteaux Champenois pinot noir from La Cote de Enfants (about seven percent of the blend). It’s in overdrive when first opened, an extreme wine with the redness of roses on fire, the impacted flavor of seashell minerality and the cool crispness of apple skin. A day later, the wine is effortlessly detailed, blissfully rich with the suble toastiness dervied from fermentation in old oak barrels. The acidity is there to keep it fresh for as long as it lives, a life that will be measured in decades...97.” W&S 12/11.

2009 Bordeaux Is Starting to ArriveAnother 90 Pointer! Here is Robert Parker’s London based critic, Neal Martin’s review on this beautiful 2009: 2009 Chateau Clement St Jean - 90 points “...refined, very composed bouquet with succulent redcurrant, raspberry coulis and cedar. The palate is rounded on the entry with a touch of spice, good weight with the flavours fanning out towards the voluminous finish. This really revels in a fecund vintage. Superb...” Neal Martin, the Wine Journal erobertparker.com
A Bit of Chateau Latour Under $100 per Bottle! A bottle of a First Growth Bordeaux these days is easily running anywhere from $500 to $1500 per bottle for current releases. However, you can get a bit of Chateau Latour for under $100 per bottle!!! As you may be aware of by now, Chateau Latour produces three wines of their property. The Grand Vin Chateau Latour, Les Forts de Latour (which now is sourced from specific plots only) and Pauillac de Chateau Latour. There is no beating around the bush, the 2007 vintage is not a landmark vintage by any stretch of the imagination, but what it does deliver, especially in a wine like the 2007 Pauillac, are wines that are pleasurable to drink now. The Pauillac de Latour is from exceptional vineyards and is made by one of the finest winemaking teams in Bordeaux. Right now, at this point in its life, an excellent bottle of drinking Bordeaux that shows its pedigree and class. “Three strong efforts from Latour include the 2007 Pauillac. A sleeper of the vintage, it is a delicious as well as fairly priced introduction to the brilliant winemaking at this noble estate. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of crushed rocks, red and black fruits, medium body, sweet tannin, and a long finish. It should continue to provide plenty of pleasure over the next 7-10 years...” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 4/10. We have just received a last minute shipment of this wine and wanted to quickly offer it to you. Quantities are limited; but if you are looking for excellent drink now Bordeaux, and are willing to look beyond all the vintage hypes, then this is one wine for you! JN

Feeling Like Pomerol... The commune of the vintage! That’s right in the 2008 vintage the region of Pomerol excelled. With the majority of Bordeaux having a good year, Pomerol had an excellent year. Robert Parker and the Wine Advocate have rated all other major communes of Bordeaux 90 to 92 points as a whole for the 2008 vintage. POMEROL’S 2008 vintage was rated an overall 96 points! Talk about head and shoulders above the rest in the vintage. We have two great estates now in-stock and frankly two wines that have caught our attention as excellent moderately priced cellaring wines. Not to mention both are absolutely delicious now.

The Buzz from Parker’s 2009 Bordeaux Tasting in HK... James Suckling Awards Cos d’Estournel 100 points! First week of November marked the week of Hong Kong’s largest wine fare for consumers. One of the featured speakers was Robert Parker Jr. of the Wine Advocate who hosted a tasting for 600 people on 20 of the Top 2009 Bordeaux. From all reports thus far it was a resounding success and a tasting that has cemented 2009 as one of the all time greatest vintages for Bordeaux. A piece of history really. The tasting was dubbed “The Magic 20” and by all accounts all 20 wines were magical. With many believing there to be a few 100 pointers in the mix. Bordeaux’s other lead critic James Suckling was in attendance at the tasting and afterwards he quickly blogged about the tasting publishing his notes and impression from this truly unique experience. Below are excerpts of James’s Blog but before we do get into it, we also have to point out that from this tasting that Mr. Suckling did upgrade his review on the 2009 Cos d’Estournel awarding the wine (non-blind) 100 points! Checkout James’ blog and his new scores on these beautiful wines. MY BLOG: THE GREAT 2009 BORDEAUX TASTING November 7th, 2011 I just finished the Robert Parker tasting of “The Magic 20” 2009 Bordeaux during the last day of Wine Future 2011 in Hong Kong. The 20 top Bordeaux that Parker choose for the tasting all showed fabulously. I have not tasted the 2009s yet from bottle - and I will in March 2012 - but the wines are showing such terrific class and character, even though many were only bottled three or four months ago. This small tasting confirms how great the 2009 vintage is. It may be the greatest modern vintage ever - ahead of such classics as 2005, 2000, 1990, 1989 and 1982... Bob said at the beginning of his about two-hour presentation that two types of great Bordeaux vintages exist: super exuberant ones that are great when young, and terrifically powerful and structured ones that need long aging. He said that 2009 could be classified as an exuberant one that compared to such rare and wonderful vintages as 1921, 1929, 1947, 1959, 1982, and 1990. “It’s one of the greatest vintages of my lifetime,” he said after tasting the last wine. I have to agree wholeheartedly. Bob gave a great presentation and showed what a candid, down-to-earth man he is. If you bought 2009 as futures, or en primeur, be happy. Otherwise, buy some when they come out in bottle on the market next year. Here are my tasting notes. I gave “+” to wines that I think will be better when I taste them in March next year.” James Suckling

An inexpensive but delicious wine...Luscious, round and generous in the mouth, this is a hedonist’s St.-Emilion...91-93.” WA 5/11. winter gazette 2012 / zachys.com / 9

z “Bachelet ‘09s are among the best that I have ever seen from him...” Burghound ‘Denis Bachelet noted “...Overall, 2009 is a really beautiful vintage that should please everyone.” I agree with Bachelet that everyone will indeed like these wines as they are indeed brilliant. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the Bachelet ‘09s are among the best that I have ever seen from him...’ Allen Meadow’s the Burghound 1/11 What more is there to say?! Denis Bachelet has once again nailed it!!! One of our favorite producers in every vintage, Denis Bachelet’s track record to us is simply put the best. Vintage after Vintage we feel he nails it. 2009 is of course the same. Extremely high quality across the board from the Bourgogne level straight up through to the Grand Cru. The bread and butter wine of the Domaine is the Vieilles Vignes Gevrey Chambertin which in 2009 is all about the 92s!!! Every major critic has put a 92 in their score thus far for this wine. Everyone is agreeing that the 2009 Gevery VV is “A terrific vintage for this consistently excellent old vine bottling” and that “Villages level wines are rarely found at this quality level.” Here is the only problem. The Domaine is TINY, TINY, TINY. Production is very small for someone based in Gevrey and even with this cuvee it is very hard for us to get our hands on enough. This wine is arriving tomorrow and if you wait to pick it up in the store you are clearly running the risk of this wine to be sold out. Reserve your’s today! You will be glad you did!!! JN

Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes (92JG/90-92WA/89-92IWC/89-92BH) {#343646} ..120.00 “The 2009 Gevrey V.V. is another superb example of the vintage chez Bachelet. The nose offers up a complex and vibrant blend of black cherries, cassis, coffee bean, a great base of complex soil, woodsmoke, incipient notes of grilled meats and a deft touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully textured, with superb focus and balance and lovely grip on the tangy and ripely tannic finish. A terrific vintage for this consistently excellent old vine bottling...92.” JG 11/10. “Outstanding - A subtle application of wood sets off black and purple fruit aromas, in particular plum, as well as notes of spice and stone, both of which can be found on the rich, intense and palate soaking flavors that also abound with extract. Between the ripeness and the ample extract this could easily be top heavy but in fact there is excellent focus and balance. Villages level wines are rarely found at this quality level...89-92.” BH 1/11.

When you talk about benchmark bottlings of Chablis, one of the most highly talked about and emulated is the Premier Cru La Forest from Dauvissat. This is to many Chablis lovers the epitome of Chablis. The vineyard is exceptional, the producer legendary, and the combination of the two produces one of the finest examples of Chablis year after year. We have just received a small chunk of the 2009 Vintage this week and I wanted to make sure that all you Chablis lovers had a chance to load-up on yours today! JN

“The 2009 La Forest is the most reserved wine in the lineup to this point and it will be a stellar example of the vintage. The brilliant bouquet soars from the glass in a beautiful blend of apples, tart citrus tones, flint, wet stones and lemon peel. On the palate the wine is deep full-bodied, tight and absolutely racy, with a gorgeous core of fruit, brisk acids and a brilliantly intense, palate-staining, mineral bath of a finish. A great, great vintage for the Dauvissat La Forest! 20162040...94” JG 11/10. “Quite tight on the nose, hinting at licorice and medicinal herbs. Then rich and ripe but very dry in the mouth, with powerful, saline soil tones currently dominating primary fruit. Wonderfully tactile, chewy grand cru but introverted, even austere, today, showing little sign of surmaturite. Finishes very young and very long, with subtle lingering perfume...93-96” IWC 8/11. winter gazette 2012 / zachys.com / 11

First Offer 2010 Burgundy—The Last Vintage for Living Legend Jacques Lardiere Yes it is already time to start thinking about another vintage from Burgundy. We are ready to offer our first 2010s of both Red and White Burgundy. Focusing in on the wines of Louis Jadot. A house that has been turning out amazing wines for centuries. One of the men behind all the Jadot wines for years has been winemaker Jacques Lardiere. Jacques has cemented Jadot as one of the great houses of the region and the one house that consistently turns out a dizzying array of exceptional wines vintage after vintage. Alas, Jacques is ‘retiring’ and 2010 is his last hands on vintage from start to finish. Jacques is of course staying on the board at Jadot and will be around to assist and instill his vast knowledge in the next generation. However as I said 2010 is his last vintage where he was involved in it all. A fitting vintage to end on as 2010 IS AN EXCEPTIONAL VINTAGE ACROSS THE ENTIRE REGION FOR RED AND WHITE. No hype here. No Spin, 2010 is an excellent vintage. A very classic vintage and one that is excellent in both colors. The issue is that 2010 is an extremely tiny vintage. Many producers have reported yields 30% to 35% lower than average. If you are a Burgundy Lover (a fanatic, a purist, a die-hard) this is a must have vintage for you. And this is a must pre-order vintage for you. There is no waiting for your favorite wines to arrive in-stock as quantities on them are extremely low. For example we were allocated 10 cases of many of the Jadot Grand Crus in the 2009 vintage but for 2010 we are only getting 3 to 5 cases. The quantities are so small and allocations being stretched thin that the wines are going to disappear before they even arrive. This is our expectation as the quantities are dictating that things are going to disappear long before they arrive next December. Jacques Lardiere
“Jacques Lardière and his successor as Chef du Cave at Maison Jadot, Frédéric Barnier, have produced absolutely magical 2010s in what is in essence Jacques Lardière’s final complete vintage that he will follow all the way to bottle at Louis Jadot. 2011 marks Jacques’’ fortieth year at Maison Jadot and it certainly has been a marvelous career and the quality of these 2010s is certainly a very nice way to begin to say “au revoir” to this chapter of his own personal history. While Jacques still has all of 2012 to go before he rides off into the sunset, these brilliant 2010s may well be the final exclamation point on his magical career at Maison Jadot... The Louis Jadot reds are a stunning group of wines and there are some absolutely celestial sleepers to be found here amongst the more wellknown and consistently outstanding bottlings from the domaine... 2010 is unequivocally one of the greatest red wine vintages of Jacques Lardière’s long and illustrious career, and there will be dozens and dozens of 2010 Louis Jadot reds that Burgundy lovers are going to want to search out for long-term cellaring. The best reds in the cellars here this year share the sappy purity of fruit and stunning transparency of the very best wines of the vintage and there are so many great wines waiting in the wings here that it is truly an embarrassment of riches up and down the quality hierarchy at Louis Jadot in 2010. Like many of the very best reds of the vintage, the Jadot reds are very suavely structured wines, but in true Jadot fashion, they will still need extended cellaring to really reach their true summits of complexity...it seems pretty likely that this is the finest red wine vintage at the estate since 1978!” John Gilman a View from the Cellar 1/12.
There are OVER ONE HUNDRED 2010 Jadot wines available at Zachys!

“Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is one of Burgundy’s most exciting young producers...” Antonio Galloni, the Wine Advocate 10/11. YOU got that right Antonio!!! We have been following legendary Burgundy Sommelier / Importer / Guru-Daniel Johnnes lead on this one for years. Pierre-Yves truly is one of the most exciting and dynamic young winemakers in Burgundy today. You know it too. Vintage after vintage we would not be gobbling up as much of these as we do unless you did not enjoy them yourselves. In 2009 Pierre-Yves once again turned out some of the finest wines of the vintage. With numerous wines rated 94 to 97 points amongst the “Grand Cru” level, it is no wonder that Pierre-Yves wines have been flying out of here. However, we cannot forget that Pierre-Yves bread and butter are his Chassagne Montrachets and St Aubins. These are some of the best values that can be found in White Burgundy today and his 2009s are true to form once again!

The always understated and reserved Bienvenues Batard Montrachet and the classic go-to of the Jadot Grand Cru line-up Corton Charlemagne. The Bienvenues Batard is amazing and is always one of those “sleeping giants” that just needs time to evolve. I just found out when using eRobertParker.com’s Wine Alert and Wine-Searcher. com that we have the BEST PRICE in the WORLD on this wine!
“A classic Caillerets nose displays ample minerality, citrus and floral aromas that complement well the very fresh, energetic and well-detailed flavors that are crystalline in their purity on the balanced, linear and explosive finish. This is terrific and the impeccable balance should enable it to age over the medium-term...91-94.” BH 6/11.
St Aubin Chateniere (91BH) {#343122} ................. 65.99 “An elegantly pure, airy and layered nose features aromas of orange peel, lemon, acacia blossom and lightly spiced pear. There is a bit more volume to the attractively plump, intense and minerally flavors that possess solid complexity to the dry and clean finish. This lovely effort should age well over the medium-term and I particularly like the sense of underlying tension...91.” BH 6/11.
St Aubin Combes (90BH) {#344140} ...................... 44.95 “...floral aromas that blend seamlessly into detailed, fresh and pure medium-bodied flavors that exhibit excellent precision, indeed to the point that this could almost pass for a 2008 in style...90.” BH 6/11.

Dagueneau Silex-the Greatest Expression of Sauvignon Blanc?! Is the DAGUENEAU expression of Sauvignon Blanc the Greatest Example of the Grape?! It is something that many have been talking about for well over a decade and is a conversation that continues now after Didier Dagueneau’s death as his son Louis-Benjamin takes the helm of the family domaine. One thing is for sure, the DAGUENEAU style is unique to the family. Many have attempted to emulate it and failed. Many have studied it and walked away from attempting. But one thing is agreed upon, the DAGUENEAU style is one of the most dramatic examples of Sauvignon Blanc and spurs the conversation on to the heights that can be achieved by Sauvignon Blanc. “Didier Dagueneau’s son Louis-Benjamin (whose name now appears on the label) is in charge of the domaine that his recently-deceased and much-lamented father brought to such notoriety. Benjamin Dagueneau - whose intense focus is obvious - has been working alongside his father for several years, and the crew here - one person each for the estate’s 11 hectares (27 acres) - are no doubt exceptionally capable of carrying on. The 2009 collection (whose Pouilly-Fumes weigh in between 13 and less than 14% alcohol) promises to be the best group of Sauvignons rendered in that year...The fermentative and elevage regiment here has for some time been entirely in larger barrels, in particular demi-muids and customized, 350-400-liter, cigar-shaped casks of Dagueneau design that maximizes lees contact. Fermentative temperature is controlled when necessary by inserting an exchanger. In view

Original Six Packs Available “From an enclave just outside the cuverie in Saint Andelain, the Dagueneau 2009 Blanc Fume de Pouilly Silex delivers an almost inordinate diversity of floral, herbal, citrus (predominately grapefruit), and pit-fruit (predominately nectarine) elements, with the bitterness of fruit pits, smoky pungency of red currant and crushed stone, as well as notes of shrimp shell reduction and iodine inflecting a long, bittersweet, yet at the same time vibrant, buoyant finish. This silken textured seducer should gain with time in bottle and be worth following for ten or a dozen years...93-94+.” WA 8/10.
Textbook Cabernet - Two Terrific Reviews Textbook Cabernet can sometime come from very surprising places. Like the Loire Valley!!! The Chinon Cuvee Terroir 2006 is a text book example of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a wine that is delicious from the get go and has beautiful supple texture and length. This really does show the heights that Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Loire Valley can achieve. This blend takes on more of the darker overtones of the Cabernet Sauvignon and the smoky earth. An extremely fun wine that delivers a medium body versatile glass of Cabernet. Just check out these two stellar notes:

“Brilliant wines being produced in all price categories. They make sumptuous, complex, world-class Cotes du Rhones” Robert Parker “This impeccably run estate, in the capable hands of Christophe Sabon, his sister Isabelle, and their father, is one of the superstars of the southern Rhone Valley. Over the last 1215 years, the quality of the wines has gone from strength to strength, with brilliant wines being produced in all price categories. They make sumptuous, complex, world-class red, white and rose Cotes du Rhones, and year-in and year-out, their Chateauneuf du Papes are among the top three or four wines of the vintage. Tasting two great vintages (2009 and 2010) from the Sabons was one of the most thrilling tastings I have had this year. My tasting began with some unbelievable Cotes du Rhones.” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 10/11. Janasse, JANASSE, JANASSE! Domaine de la Janasse, yes they are known for their fabulous top end Chateauneuf du Papes, but everything from the Cotes du Rhone on up through the range is fabulous in 2009! I know all of you are stocking up on the 98 point Cuvee Chaupin CdP and the 99 point Vieilles Vignes CdP but you cannot overlook the insane values of the 2009 Cotes du Rhone and classic Chateauneuf du Pape. Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate has had plenty of good things to say about these wines and this estate. Just look at all these great comments. And did you notice that the classic CdP received a very strong 94 point review and the Les Garrigues Cotes du Rhone is just a point below at 93...WOW!!! “Sensational” is right. But for all you looking to load up on wine that really delivers some BANG for Your BUCK. Look no further than the classic Cotes du Rhone and the Cotes du Rhone Terre d’Argile! These two wines are excellent in 2009 and “sensational” for the price. If you want CdP quality and under $25 these are the two wines that you need to be loading up on. They are “Baby Chateauneufs” hands down.

“...considered by many observers in Chateauneuf du Pape to be the wine of the vintage, and it can most certainly be counted among the finest…layered, full-bodied mouthfeel displays no heat, but the wine has massive concentration and a silky, smooth finish. The Best Values of Chateau Rayas... Chateau Rayas is one of Chateauneuf du Pape’s most legendary estates. The wines command extremely high prices retail and in the auction market. However there are still some more obtainable wines produced by this legendary estate and its other holdings. Chateau de Fonsalette is the Cotes du Rhone branch of Chateau Rayas. Sourced from vineyards long owned by the Reynaud family outside of Chateauneuf du Pape, the Cotes du Rhone of Fonsalette are made in the same fashion as Chateau Rayas’ Chateauneuf du Pape. Simply put these are Cotes du Rhone that need time in the cellar. They are like drinking baby Chateauneuf du Pape and are hands down some of the most complex Cotes du Rhones out there. However, you also don’t want to forget about the Pignan bottling of Chateauneuf du Pape. From Grenache planted in the 1980s in the Pignan zone of Chateauneuf du Pape this is the ‘young vine cuvee’ of Chateau Rayas. In 2007 this wine is a show stopper and only reestablishes why Rayas is one of the greatest estates of Chateauneuf du Pape! “2007 may be Emmanuel Reynaud’s greatest vintage since he took over the management of this estate when his uncle, Jacques Reynaud, died in 1997” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 10/09.

Domaine Santa Duc has once again possibly turned out the Gigondas of the vintage! This domaine has consistently turned out some of the top wines of the Rhone Valley overall. Historically their top wine and old vine cuvee is the Les Hautes Garriges which we have become great fans of for the quality, depth and overall reasonable price tag. The second wine that Yves Gras (Domaine Santa Duc owner/winemaker) is receiving massive acclaim for his 100% pure Grenache Cuvee called Grand Grenache 66. These two wines have caught the attention of Robert Parker at the Wine Advocate and are the highest two rated 2009 Gigondas by Parker. The Grand Grenache 66 edges the Les Hautes Garriges out by a point at 95-97pts while the Les Hautes Garriges is 94-97pts. But when it came down to deciding which wine to buy and offer you, we went with the Les Hautes Garriges! For $55 this wine delivers an equally impressive glass of wine as the Grand Grenache 66 that is retailing up to $90 per bottle. This was a no brainer for us. Alas, quantities are limited and we highly recommend that you reserve your bottles today.

z Two More Fine Examples of Massive Wines for the Money from the 2010 Vintage 2010 Southern Rhone Vintage: 97 points the Wine Advocate The 2010 Southern Rhone Vintage is one of the finest in years. Rated an overall 97 points by the Wine Advocate, the 2010 vintage is practically equal in quality to the landmark 2007 vintage that the Wine Advocate rated overall 98 points. As we have always said, the beauty in massive, landmark Vintages like 2010 and 2007 is that the quality of wine that you can acquire for the money is MASSIVE in the value section; especially in the Rhone! The quality is once again extremely impressive in the Cotes du Rhone of the 2010 Vintage and these two wines are prime examples.

Both Cuvees Scoring Perfection?!? Has Domaine du Pegau finally achieved dueling perfect wines in one single vintage?! It is too early to tell but the possibilities are very, very strong as the track record of this historic property is AMAZING! Robert Parker calls the 2010s from Pegau a return to the 1998 vintage. A vintage that Pegau knocked it out of the park with a 96pt and 100pt wine. Or could it be more like the 2003 vintage with a 98pt and 100pt wine?! Too early to tell but one thing is for sure, Pegau is making some of their best wines yet! Yes, the Cuvee da Capo is one of the priciest Chateauneuf du Papes produced but the track record of this wine is all about 100 points!!! Only produced in exceptional vintages, Cuvee da Capo since its debut Vintage of 1998 has scored a perfect 100 points every time from Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate.
99pt from Robert Parker & Just Arrived! We have received our first shipment of the AMAZING 2009s from Clos St Jean. Including two wines that are consistently perfection: the Deus-Ex Machina (99pt Robert Parker) and the Combe de Fous (98pt Rhone Report)!!! Plus, the screaming hot values of the Clos St Jean entry level Chateauneuf du Pape for only $35 per bottle (93pt RP&RR) and the ever popular Vieilles Vignes (94pt RP). These are stellar wines, big stand-outs of the 2009 vintage and frankly a range of wines that rival Domaine de la Janasse as the top line-up of the Vintage.
A track record that we expect to be up held by the 2010 vintage. However, the expectation that only the Cuvee da Capo is going to be a perfect wine in 2010 may need to be adjusted. The Cuvee Reservee that has flirted with perfection in the past is poised to tie the monumental 2003 or exceed it with a 99pt or 100pt score! This is the vintage to buy Cuvee Reservee and stock up on one of the greatest lived Chateuneuf du Papes produced in 2010. JN “One of the bastions of traditionalism in Chateauneuf du Pape is Domaine de Pegau, long owned by the Feraud family, and now run by the charming, talented Laurence, who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father, Paul...fashions some of the longestlived, most interesting wines of the appellation...” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 10/11.
Chateauneuf du Pape Pegau 2010 “If a prize were given to the Rhone Valley estate that had improved the most in the shortest period of time, it would undoubtedly go to that of Pascal and Vincent Maurel, who took over Clos Saint-Jean after their father passed away in 2002. Since then, they have made a succession of world-class wines that are out of this world...No doubt the hiring of renowned oenologist Philippe Cambie has also increased the quality...the 2009s from bottle performed at the upper end of the ranges I had given them last year - always a sign of a terrific winery dedicated to high quality.” Robert Parker the Wine Advocate 10/11.

z What do you get when Michel Chapoutier and his Right-Hand Man decided to establish an estate in the Southern-Rhone? Answer: a) Pierre-Henri Morel Wines b) Awesome Values In the Southern-Rhone c) The Most Excited We have been since finding Philippe Cambie’s Les Halos de Jupiter wines two years ago. d) All of the above! This project is destined to be a great addition to the already fabulous line-up of projects that Michel Chapoutier has gotten involved in. The support and knowledge of Michel Chapoutier is an important part of the success of these wines, but the key factor to the tremendous early success of these wines is the fact that this is a joint venture with Pierre-Henri Morel. Yes he is Michel’s right-hand man, but Pierre-Henri knowledge of the Southern-Rhone is the key here along with his drive to produce wines that are exceptional upon release. Pierre-Henri Morel has a true passion for food, wine and great terroirs from his native region: the Rhone Valley. He started to work with worldly acclaimed winemaker Michel Chapoutier in 2000 and has been deeply involved in the management of the winery since then. In 2007, Michel Chapoutier proposed a new adventure to Pierre-Henri: they decided to purchase in joint-venture a vineyard in the prestigious “Pignan” area in Chateauneuf du Pape. This 4 ha vineyard is planted with old vines of Grenache. It truly offers an outstanding terroir with the potential to make one of the most refined Chateauneuf du Pape. Pierre-Henri is fascinated by the Southern Rhone Valley and the amazing variety of its soils. A few other wines were added to the range: Cotes du Rhone Villages “Laudun” and “Signargues”, from the right bank of the Rhone facing Chateauneuf du Pape, are outstanding values, and a Gigondas, made from plots which are located on beautiful height and medium height terraces made of alluvial soils. Pierre-Henri Morel wines are vinified and aged within the M. Chapoutier infrastructures receiving the best care and attention that both men are noted for attending to their wines evolution. JN “Created in 2008 when Chapoutier purchased the bankrupt Domaine de Bois Dauphines, these wines are made by Pierre-Henri Morel, who is the Directeur Commercial at Chapoutier. The wines shows predominately classical styles that have a fruit forward slant…09s are very well done and possesses sweet fruit, solid balance, and plenty of character.” Jeb Dunneck the Rhone Report 9/11.

Medium to full bodied, dense, and impeccably well-made, the brilliant 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Lieu-Dit Pignan, which comes from five acres in this sector cropped at 20 hectoliters per hectare, is super. Notes of black cherry marmalade, plum sauce, lavender, and licorice jump from the glass of this dark ruby wine. The wine has terrific texture, density, and a medium to full-bodied, rich mouthfeel. It should drink well for at least a decade or more...90-92.” WA 10/10.

z Rhone Fans Must Read: WS Rhone Report Is Out 2009 = Power & Grace! I was so excited last November when I came in to find the latest issue of Wine Spectator on my desk. THE ISSUE TITLE: FRANCE’S RHONE VALLEY THE COVER STORY: SUPER SYRAH, GREAT GRENACHE - 2009 RHONES DELIVER POWER WITH GRACE I was waiting for this issue all year! As a huge Rhone lover, I have traveled to taste the 2009 vintage, a vintage that early on I feel in love with. As a result, I’ve gone deep with our 2009 selections and am happy to report that we have many of the finest wines of the vintage in house NOW. When I was scrolling through James Molesworth’s Recommended Rhone Valley Wines on just the list of Top 2009 Northern Rhone Reds, the page started filling up with RED ARROWS of wines that we have to offer! WE HAVE FOUR OUT OF THE TOP FIVE WINES. Frankly, I am bit ecstatic that one of my favorite producers of the vintage and a relative new find is not only the first wine on the list but also the third! Domaine du Coulet is a must for all you Northern Rhone Lovers. Incidentally the bottle also is featured on the cover of this issue. You know what that means, it is going to disappear quick!
2009 is a monumental vintage for the Northern Rhone and one that has yielded excellent wines across all the communes. In fact, Wine Spectator has awarded the 2009 Northern Rhone vintage the highest rating in a decade! That’s right as an overall 96 point vintage 2009 is rated higher than the landmark 2005 and 2003 vintages and ties the legendary 1999. As I said this is a monumental vintage that is Rhone Fans need to stock up on. Also I almost forgot, we also have the #1 recommended White Northern Rhone wine of the issue which is none other than the CHAVE HERMITAGE BLANC! Don’t wait, you need to load up today on these great wines. JN

The Greatest Vintage Since 1978-98pt Vintage!!! 2009 Northern Rhone...The Greatest Vintage Since 1978!?! Not since 1978 has Robert Parker and the Wine Advocate rated a Northern Rhone vintage 98 points-the highest rating that the Wine Advocate has EVER donned on a Northern Rhone vintage!!! That is right, 2009 surpasses the landmark and highly sought after 2003 vintage which Robert Parker awarded 96 points. There is a TON of great wine from the 2009 vintage but one of the BEST VALUE St Josephs is from the one producer that stole the show in Robert Parker’s latest reviews in the Wine Advocate-DELAS. The St Epine 2009 is tied for the highest rated red St Joseph of the vintage at 96 points. This wine is some of the best values when it comes to St Joseph and is an excellent bottle of wine for the money. High quality Northern Rhone wines at these prices and this quality are getting hard to find and our stocks on these will not last long. JN

Putting Together All the Pieces...It All Adds Up to Must Have! “I tasted the latest releases from Gerard Bru’s ambitious Chateau Puech-Haut with him; his hands-on cellarmaster Mathieu Ciampi; and a frequent inspiration and coach in matter vinous who since 2009 is the estate’s official enologist – Philippe Cambie. (Before that, Claude Gros advised here, and for a time, too, Michel Rolland.) The rotund devotee and guru of Chateauneuf has brought to these wines his flamboyant style and penchant for as he puts it “the maximum ripeness consistent with elegance...there can be no doubt that the wines of Puech-Haut – like the men behind them – are both generous and formidable. And as often happens to me, amid wines of more lavish elevage, I found their ostensibly intro-level cuvee (now dubbed “Prestige”) more than held its own, resulting in outstanding value...Chateauneuf-du-Pape would seem the more obvious analogy for these wines, not least now, given Cambie’s collaboration...To the extent that this vintage’s youthful red raw material could be assessed – with low sulfur admittedly coloring one’s impression – these will be extremely ripe and rich, often downright liqueur-like and frequently seductively floral wines for their vintage. The last grapes weren’t harvested until November 6, yet the team here made clear that they viewed the presence of ‘freshness’ to accompany all that richness a great virtue of the 2010 vintage...” the Wine Advocate 8/11. A few weeks ago, during dinner I got a phone call from one of our best suppliers. Puech-Haut Prestige, one of the most sought after and in demand wines of 2011 (which has long been sold out) NEWEST vintage is arriving very soon and I needed to confirm our allocation on the spot! I quickly took a moment to do my due diligence and decided to take it ALL! This wine has been a massive hit with you last year and rightfully so. The 2009 Prestige was one of the best values that we had to offer last year with a $20 to $25 price tag and a 94 point review from Robert Parker via blog and a 93 point review from Robert Parker published in the Wine Advocate! No wonder it was an immediate hit; re-orders showed us that you have found a consistent place for this wine in your cellars. Here’s why I think we are already going to love it: 1 The above commentary from the Wine Advocate hinting on the quality of the 2010 Vintage. 2 For the first time ever the Wine Advocate has published a Vintage Chart for the Languedoc & Roussillon awarding the 2010 Vintage overall 95 points where the 2009 Vintage was only rated 89! So if Puech-Haut Prestige was a 94/93 point wine in 2009 then 2010 should easily be on par! 3 Some of the first 2010 Southern Rhone Reds that we have had to offer that Mr. Cambie has been the enologist for have ALL sold out and scored tremendous well: • Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan Cercius Michel Gassier 2010 (93WA) SOLD OUT was only $14.99 • Cotes du Ventoux Cuvee Les Terrasses Chateau Pesquie 2010 (94WA) SOLD OUT was only $17.99 • Cotes du Ventoux Imagine Domaine Vindemio 2010 (95WA) SOLD OUT was only $24.99 The 2010 vintage is poised for the repeat success of the 2009 vintage. Adding this all up...Cambie is on a roll with the 2010s + the 2010 Languedoc & Roussillon Vintage is possibly the GREATEST EVER with an overall rating of 95 points + the Wine Advocate has already hinted at good things for Puech-Haut...this is a MUST HAVE! Highest Rated Beaucastel Blanc Ever!!! “...Chateau de Beaucastel makes two of the great white wines of the southern Rhone...” Robert Parker the Wine Advocate 10/11. The 2009 vintage of Beaucastel Blanc is the highest rated version ever from Robert Parker at the Wine Advocate. At 96 points this is the highest score Robert Parker has ever rated the Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc from Beaucastel. And let me tell you...it is magnificent! It is a wine that Robert Parker has called “off the charts” and one that any diehard white wine lover will want to have in the cellar. JN

Considered the Greatest of His Day— A Master of Wine-An Excellent WinemakerHailed as the Greatest White Wine Winemaker by Robert Parker “I don’t know what is more mind-boggling, the quality of Domaine Zind Humbrecht’s wines or Olivier Humbrecht’s complete dedication to quality. This tall, powerful, and intellectual man may well be the finest winemaker in the world.” Robert Parker The World’s Greatest Wine Estates Consistency, consistency, consistency. The best way to sum up the wines of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht! You can look at it in two ways and in both cases, consistency is the best way to describe the quality of wines Olivier Humbrecht produces. From vintage to vintage, Zind-Humbrecht turns out wines of remarkable quality that are consistent from year to year; not to mention this domaine is consistently the top producer of Alsace. Secondly, within the Domaine Zind-Humbrecht range the quality is consistent from top to bottom. All the wines and we mean all the wines-are meticulously made, making this range one of the greatest high quality line-ups in any vintage. One could basically throw a dart while blindfolded and hit a great wine from Zind-Humbrecht...you just can’t go wrong! JN

Deiss Is Nice! DOMAINE MARCEL DEISS...One of Alsace’s Greatest Estates and some of the most profound expressions of “Terroir” today! I have an old saying from my days as working as sommelier...“Deiss Is Nice!” The wines from Domaine Deiss are hands down exceptional and some of my personal favorites. I was turned onto the Deiss wines in 2001 by long time chef and sommelier Didier Virot. Didier who worked and studied for many years in Alsace at the famed Au Crocodile is an exceptional accomplished chef (he was Jean-Georges right hand when opening JoJo and Jean-Georges) and in his own rights an exceptional accomplished sommelier. Of course, Didier’s knowledge and love for Alsatian wines is extremely deep and over the course of the year Didier and I worked together, that love for Deiss was instilled in me and continues today. Domaine Deiss is not your normal Alsatian estate. This is an estate that focuses on the place, the terroir foremost. Thus the range of wines produced at Deiss is monumental with the majority of the wines only carry a site name on the label. Nothing else. No indication as to what grapes are used as the wine is an expression of that singular place and the blend does not matter it is all about the place! The vines planted there are believed to be the ideal vines for the place and thus the selection is a pure expression of the place. Got it? It’s all about the expression of the place and frankly that is what makes these wines so unique. From vintage to vintage they are some of the finest and most diverse wines produced in Alsace. Now today I am happy to offer a range of wines where many of the cuvee (places) have never before been offered in the USA. As I said the range from Deiss is massive and as a result historically only a limited amount of selections were exported for the USA market. Today the new importer along with the Deiss Family has opted to change that allowing for the first time the full range to be made available in the USA. That’s the good side. The bad side is some of the production is super tiny and as a result we cannot offer every cuvee and the one’s that we do have are frankly limited. If you love Alsace and wines that evoke a ‘place’ these are the wines for you. “...Deiss’s belief that diverse cepages which grow together -”under the influence of the parcel’s terroir and of one another” tend to ripen together...” the Wine Advocate

One of the Finest of the Vintage— Once Again! “The irreplaceable and virtually irrepressible Marcel Lapierre succumbed to unrelenting melanoma just after the 2010 harvest was completed and will be sorely missed among us. His son Mathieu – who had been assuming an increasingly important role at the domaine in recent years – has admirably advanced their labors in this vintage, resulting in wines that display the levity and “digestabilite” as well as textural caress and subtle complexity that one has long associated with the crafts of this domaine. Lapierre picked from September 20 through the first week in October and achieved normal crop levels. Mathieu Lapierre might refine his father’s methods but it seems unlikely that he will deviate from them in fundamental ways, and he believes that “we in Beaujolais are in danger of losing our vinous identity” thanks in part to the ambitions of growers who take their inspiration and methods from the Cote d’Or.” David Schildknecht the Wine Advocate 8/11.

Andrew’s Over/Under Theory: Where Else Can you Find OVER 50 Brunellos UNDER $50?!?!?! Any of you out there who have experienced the delicious warmth and magic that can be captured in a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino know full-well that by definition this category of wine can come with a significant price tag.
Brunello di Montalcino From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Brunello di Montalcino is a red Italian wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino located about 120 km south of Florence in the Tuscany wine region. Brunello, roughly translated as “small dark one” in the local dialect,[1] is the unofficial name of the clone of Sangiovese (also known as Sangioverosso[2]) grown in the Montalcino region. In 1980, the Brunello di Montalcino was awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation and today is one of Italy’s best-known and most expensive wines.[3] After doing this for 18 years, I take great pride in not only having one of the most extensive selections of Brunello in America (Currently over 250 selections) but also having the ability to throw 50 of the markets best selections for you to purchase for under $50/bottle. Now, I am not saying that Zachys is the only place that can do this, but the list would be very short. Take the time to scoop up some of these delicious wines so you can experience (or re-experience) the magic of Montalcino. All my best, Andrew

Zachys Testimonial “By the way, I really like Andrew’s Angle. There is a lot of info on the web that is not worth reading and your site provides a great perspective on quality wines that represent great value in the $15 to $50 price range where I buy cases and I am sure that a lot of customers do the same.” Gordon 11/11
Andrew’s Angle Is Here To Keep You IN STEP With What’s Hot & Happening In The Wine World! One of the most exciting parts of all the video taping and blogging that we are currently doing on the Angle is that we get the opportunity to pull YOU into the world of Zachys. There is no better way to have you “walk a day in our shoes” than to show you a little bit of what goes on behind the scenes in our wine selections and promotions. The value of this new media channel was most telling from the filming/reporting we were doing on our tasting trip to Italy last month. Brian Mullaney and I knew that the 2007 Brunello and 2006 Brunello Riserva releases were going to be HOT due to their supreme quality. It was very important for us to create our OWN opinion of the wines and the vintages before the press and reviews came out. Trust me, tasting 83 Brunellos and 44 Brunello Riservas all BLIND is a lot of work. When you have no pre-conceived notions of what’s in the glass some very telling truths can come forward (and also some weird observations...but that’s what makes it so much fun). The trip and the tasting were priceless. It was so much fun to be able to give people a glimpse of it all through The Angle. The timing could not have been any better because the day we got back article #1 went up: 2007 Brunello di Montalcino | 95 Point Vintage Wine Enthusiast gets a first chance to score the newest Tuscan wine releases | Published on Jan 19, 2012 “It’s been decided: The 2007 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino is a lovely expression of variety and territory...Wine Enthusiast Magazine was among the first to blind taste through the new vintage and found it to be indeed one of the most exciting vintages since the start of the millennium.... W.E. awarded the 2007 vintage 95 points on our 100-point scale. The 2006 vintage earned 93 points last year, and both vintages were given a maximum five stars by the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino... the 2007 vintage is softer, rounder and more opulent, and shows incredible aromatic intensity. It also delivers firm structure and power for long cellar aging. Sangiovese Grosso is a naturally acidic variety, with freshness that’s very well balanced in 2007...” And just recently on January 25th James Suckling posted his thoughts on jamessuckling.com: TASTING REPORT: 2007 BRUNELLO DI MONTALICINOS ARE SUPERLATIVE QUALITY | January 25th, 2012 “Brunello di Montalcino has never had two consecutive great vintages – but it did in 2007 and 2006, and now they are both on the market. The question is, which is better?...I tasted about 160 2007 Brunello di Montalcinos 10 days ago in blind tastings in Tuscany, and I was incredibly impressed with the richness of the wines. They are wonderfully fruity with a purity of ripe Sangivoese that is seldom seen from the vineyards surrounding the hilltop town of Montalcino. The bright fruit in the wines overshadowed their firm tannins and fresh acidities, yet they remain agile with tension...I think the 2007 Brunellos are slightly more drinkable than the 2006s at this stage because of their juicer and slightly riper fruit character...In fact, many of my top scoring 2007 Brunellos in this report are the best ever from a number of wineries...the two vintages (2006 & 2007) are equal with outstanding wines. In the tasting of 2007, I rated almost 90 percent of the wines 90 points or more; that’s astounding consistency in quality. I can’t think of another wine region that delivers such high quality on a whole...” Had you been watching the The Angle regularly...this would have been “Old News”!!! Isn’t it time you tune in to andrewsangle.com? AM

z “Super-Tuscan” Does Not Have To Be SUPER Expensive!!! Whenever people hear the catch phrase “Super-Tuscan” the image of the higher priced luxury brands like Tignanello, Sassicaia and Ornellaia conjure up images of $100 bills flying out the window. By definition, super-Tuscan is simply a blend of the traditional regional varietal (Sangiovese) with non-traditional international varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot etc. etc.) The higher price tag comes in when you are looking at wines that are made from older vines, “bigger fashion, lower yields, pricier sub-region…honestly, there is a lot that can push it up. But what if consumers want to get a feel for the marriage of the “traditional” with the “non-traditional”? Even better, what if they want it to be under $20/Bottle? We’ve got the answer and are SO HAPPY that this blend is making another appearance in the store as it has been absent for a few years. It just arrived this past December and I fear it will be gone before Spring is upon us…so act fast on this one and LOAD UP. AM

“The 2009 Lucilla is another beautiful wine that is particularly strong in this vintage. Subtle hints of herbs, tobacco and wild flowers add complexity to a core of racy, dark red fruit. In 2009 Lucilla has an extra degree of mid-palate juiciness that makes it absolutely irresistible. The international varieties are felt, but not heard, as my high school music teacher once taught me about playing guitar in a jazz big band. Did I mention this is a stunning value? Lucilla is 70% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017...Castello di Farnetella is Felsina’s second label. In recent years the wines have improved noticeably...90.” WA 8/11.
Has This Become The New Le Difese? Over the last 3 vintages the store’s go-to (And TOP selling) under $30 Tuscan red has been the 3rd label from the Tenuta San Guido estate: Le Difese. It has become SO POPULAR that for the first time ever we completely ran out of the current release in the middle of the holidays….with the next release not due until late April. This opened the door (and people’s minds & palates) for a new batter to step up to the plate. Staying with the baseball theme, the Cavalli estate (From famed fashion designer Roberto Cavalli) has hit it out of the park with the Le Redini and I think we are looking at a serious contender with Le Difese. Better to have too many choices than not enough...right?!?! AM

The 2008 AALTO maintains the legacy: “Bodegas y Vinedos Aalto is a partnership between legendary vigneron Mariano Garcia [formerly of Vega Sicilia] and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero DO. Aalto is sourced from 7 different villages on a variety of soils with vineyard age ranging from 40-100 years and was aged for 24 months in French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is already displaying a complex aromatic array of sandalwood, smoke, espresso, lavender, Asian spices, and assorted blue and black fruits. Smooth-textured, succulent, and structured, it will evolve for 2-3 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2028+. In the scheme of things, it offers great value in topflight Ribera del Duero...95.” the Wine Advocate 6/11. In case you have forgotten, AALTO is a fairly new project in Ribera del Duero that is overseen by the living legend, Mariano Garcia the former winemaker at Vega Sicilia that helped to cement UNICO as one of the world’s greatest wines. In eight vintages reviewed by the Wine Advocate, five of those vintages have been rated 94 or 95 points resulting in every vintage since 2004 landing in the top 10 to 20 wines produced in the vintage. In fact, as you search the Wine Advocate site for 2008 Ribera del Duero AALTO is the fourth highest rated wine after the uber-pricey Pingus, Flor de Pingus and Tabula wines! After Months of Being Sold Out the New Vintage Is Back 91pts & Under $13! Boy did it cause an uproar. From our sales team to you everyone was asking when the Box O’ Birds Sauvignon Blanc would be back. It was most unfortunate that we did not have the wine to offer, but it was necessary. In a sense it is one of the most classic Vintages that Germany has turned out in the traditional mindset of the American consumer. Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr (91WS) {#348607} ................................................ 25.99 “An awe-inspiring offering, Johannes Selbach’s 2002 Riesling Eiswein Zeltinger Himmelreich ★ displays aromas eerily reminiscent of a live lobster prior to being cooked. Scents of the sea and a certain earth sweetness lead to a thick, rich, deep, and powerful core of red currants, tangy sugar-coated limes, and loads of spices. This wine has magnificent purity, sublime concentration, and massive length. It will most certainly earn an even higher score as it harmonizes with cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2050...96.” Wine Advocate 2/04. As a German wine lover you know that Selbach-Oster is one of the best and it is no surprise that this Eiswein is one of the top wines produced in the vintage, tied for 3rd place after the uber expensive Robert Weil and Donnhoff Eisweins. Plus with the current vintages on release being 2010 you know that 2002 is at a much better drinking stage!!! JN

z JJ Prum Up to 98 points!!! JJ Prum once again has hit a home run with the 2010 Vintage. In fact pick a Prum, any Prum for that matter. In 2010, the leading Prum estates have turned out amazing wines. We have told you about the wines of Dr. Weins-Prum (page 36) who scored excellently with the Wine Spectator. And now, we wanted to clue you into the massive scores that JJ Prum has received from the International Wine Cellar (IWC). There are some really BIG scores here and rightfully so. The 2010 vintage has turned out some magnificent wines. As the IWC is the first to come out with ratings on the Cru Vineyards of JJ Prum, we are expecting the ratings from Wine Spectator or next month’s Wine Advocate to be very much in line if not higher (many times they are)! Alas, there is a problem...the quantities are tiny in 2010 and these highly sought after wines from both Prums will not last long. It may be the middle of the winter, but don’t wait for the Spring to try and grab your JJ Prum or Weins-Prum. “If Dr. Manfred Prum does not make good Riesling in a given vintage, you can bet that it was probably impossible to do. With over 50 vintages under his belt, he is not only the grand old man of the region, but also a source of inspiration for the current generation of winemakers. His inimitable, reductive style, which is often difficult to understand in its youth, and was once confusing even for his colleagues, has become the benchmark for the spatlese and auslese styles that are the hallmarks of the middle stretches of the Mosel. On the 14 wines I tasted here, 13 merited an A and three were among the finest wines of the vintage. An impressive report card!” Joel Payne, International Wine Cellar 1/12.

z Still On Top—Delivering Exceptional Wine for the Money The Wine Spectator Insider of a few weeks back had a very interesting surprise. Amongst the “HOT WINES” of $75 to $225 California Cabernet and Syrah was the 94 point Knights Valley Reserve at Under $50! We all know that Beringer delivers quality and consistency. Their Private Reserve Chardonnay is one of the best selling Chardonnays on the market today with dueling 93 point reviews from the Wine Spectator and the Wine Advocate! Their Knights Valley Cabernets are also some of the most consistent and value oriented wines from California as well. The regular Knights Valley Cabernet 2009 received a 91 point review and the Reserve has received an amazing 94 point review.
94pt Chardonnay-Looks Like there Is a New Sheriff In Town and he’s from Italy!!!
If you love California wines and are looking for very good consistent ones to stock up on, the wines from the Beringer Vineyard are destined to be your go-to Chard and Cab! JN
Beringer Vineyards We have been big, BIG supporters of Piero Antinori’s Napa Valley estate ANTICA the past two years. The Cabernets have been stunning and garnering HUGE scores. The Chardonnay has also been a very consistent wine that we have been watching closely. Well it looks like they have settled into a stride on the Chardonnay!!! 94 points for the 2009 Chardonnay and 93 points for the 2010 Chardonnay. “I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Antica, the Antinori family’s outpost on Atlas Peak...The 2009 Chardonnay is one of the most unique Chardonnays being made in California. It shows gorgeous textural finesse and fabulous overall balance. The signature Napa Valley richness is there, but in a cooler, more mineral-driven style. Smoke, crushed rocks and citrus are layered into the vibrant finish. This is a fabulous showing...94” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate 12/11 Looks like there is a new Chardonnay sheriff in town and they are taking names and posting HUGE scores!!! Plus when it comes to high scoring Chardonnay it’s getting increasingly hard to almost impossible to find one below $35 per bottle. Lucky us this one is only $33.99! But you better act fast as this wine is bound to disappear in a mad rush with a score and price tag like this. Especially if you search the Wine Advocate’s website for 2009 Chardonnay under $40 you are hard pressed to find anything else scored as high and currently available. JN

“Upping the ante with its Knights Valley red, this offers rich, smooth, layered flavors of blackberry, wild berry, plum and cassis. Full-bodied yet graceful and elegant, most interesting on the finish, where the flavors glide along and pick up a subtle lift of spice and mocha...94.” WS Web 2012.

Full-bodied but not heavy, with detailed fig, melon, apple and spice. What’s most impressive is the texture and length...93.” WS 6/11. “...bigger, richer, more nutty-styled Chardonnay revealing tropical fruit, butter, brioche and hazelnut characteristics. z “...an excellent choice for readers who want to explore the wines of this iconic producer...95+.” the Wine Advocate Philip Togni is one of Napa Valley’s Living Legends! From his days at Chappellet to today, Philip Togni makes Cabernet Sauvignon based wines like they did in the old days of Bordeaux. His style is his style and he sticks to it no matter the vintage. The results over the decades have been monumental. Here are just some of the comments Robert Parker has made regarding the Philip Togni and his wines: • “The more I taste the Cabernets of Philip Togni, the more I admire what he has achieved.” 12/95. • “Togni’s Cabernet Sauvignons are thick, super-concentrated, inky black wines that are among the finest of California” 12/95. • “This is an irrefutable source of remarkable Cabernet Sauvignons that last 20-30+ years! Philip Togni is a nononsense, tough-minded guy who is working alongside his daughter, so the succession at this winery is guaranteed should he ever decide to retire.” 12/08.
How Did We Not See This: Beaucastel-esque 91 Points & Under $20! I don’t know how we missed this.
However, it is not just Robert Parker that has exceptional things to say about Philip Togni but also Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate who just reviewed the 2009 Cabernet awarding the wine a stellar review:
Normally we catch these things, especially on a wine like this.
“This is a breathtaking set of wines from Philip, Birgitta and Lisa Togni. Philip Togni hardly needs an introduction to lovers of fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since his epic 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon at Chappellet, Togni has crafted a series of impeccable, breathtaking wines. It is amazing to consider that Togni’s wines remain so reasonably priced when an endless number of new wineries with no track record seem to pop up every day with first releases well over $100 a bottle...Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate 12/11.

“...stunningly beautiful and seductive in its red fruit, mint and tobacco. This is a surprisingly accessible vintage for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Today it looks like an excellent choice for readers who want to explore the wines of this iconic producer – as long as it doesn’t close down in bottle. Togni’s 2009 is notable for its exceptional elegance, finesse and pedigree...disarmingly sexy and radiant for such a young wine...95+.” WA 12/11.
However, the Perrin Family just sent me a little nudge saying—HEY LOOK AT THIS!
TABLAS CREEK Patelin de Tablas Paso Robles 2010 SCORE: 91 | $20 Serves up a pleasing mix of ripe, vibrant watermelon, supple black and red licorice, wild berry, grilled meat and sanguine flavors. Full-bodied, complex and layered, with lots of berry flavors on the finish. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Counoise. Drink now through 2018. 4,900 cases made. -J.L.
Did you notice the retail price that Wine Spectator quotes: $20 for 91 point wine from one of the world’s greatest wine producing families: the Perrins are owners of the famed and beloved Chateau Beaucastel. We’ll I’ve taken my nudge and locked in as much as I’ve been permitted to have. Let’s just say my request was triple what we have been allotted. So you better act fast and lock in your Patelin de Tablas Creek today. This wine is going to be flying out of here with this great review. z December’s Wine Advocate: Dunn Steals the Show!!! Antonio Galloni’s first full Napa Valley coverage for the Wine Advocate is out and one of Napa Valley’s Greatest ICONS steals the issue. Randy Dunn!!! Dunn Vineyards as many of you know is one of the most storied estates of Napa Valley and his known for their legendary long aging Cabernet Sauvignons. Cabernet Sauvignons that I have personally stated outlive most Big Name Bordeaux. As Antonio aptly points out, the wines of Dunn need time and are not for the impatient. The aging potential of Dunn is one of the alluring things about Dunn for me, not to mention the relative value that the wines present. However, this need to have to cellar Dunn is also one of the most frustrating things about Dunn wines from time to time. An issue that does not appear to be the case regarding the massive 2007 vintage!!! A vintage overall that both the Wine Advocate and the Wine Spectator agree is phenomenal and one of the best for Napa Valley: 96WA/99WS. With the 2007 vintage, Dunn has turned out some of their finest wines yet and wines that for their style are surprisingly seductive, alluring and pleasurable to enjoy now. In 2007, Randy Dunn has flawlessly combined approachability and age ability into not one but both his 2007 Cabernet Sauvignons.
The Black ‘Kite’ of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir... Black Kite is one of the premier producers of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Frankly, they may also be the most consistent producer of solely Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Many producers based in Sonoma or elsewhere produce a Anderson Valley Pinot Noir but Black Kite is one of the few producers that only produces Anderson Valley Pinot Noirs. In the 2009, Black Kite once again turned out some magnificent wines. Some of the best of the Valley including the highest rated Anderson Valley Pinot Noir by Wine Spectator!!! This is no big surprise as the 2009 vintage for Anderson Valley is largely regarded as the BEST EVER. Wine Spectator gave the Anderson Valley 2009 Vintage as a whole 97 points!!! Unlike the massive rich and ripe vintage of 2007, the 2009 vintage show a bit more restraint and is best described as the “Perfect” “Classic” Vintage. With that in mind, and the already stunning track record for Black Kite, plus the excellent wines turned out in 2009, this is one property to put on your radar and begin to stock-up on. Not to mention with most high quality Domestic Pinot Noir climbing in price ranges of $75 or more these four stellar stand-outs all under $50 are a great buy. JN

“The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is one of the very finest young wines I have ever tasted from Randy Dunn. Layers of dark red fruit, blackberries, flowers, mint and licorice emerge from this seamless, large-scaled wine. This is a rich, opulent 2007 that never abandons its traditional sense of structure. All of the aromas and flavors build beautifully towards the immensely rewarding, intense, seductive finish. This is a dazzling showing from Randy Dunn. Is on a roll! There is more to this winery than their historic Georges de Latour Private Reserve and Tapestry cuvees. Their designated AVA Cabernet Sauvignons are terrific and the Rutherford selection has stolen the show in 2009. First off, it is almost practically impossible to find another Rutherford designated Cabernet Sauvignon that retails for $25 or less. Secondly, when you look at the complete 2009 Beaulieu line-up the 2009 Rutherford at 90 points from the Wine Advocate and $23.99 is hanging right in there with the Tapestry 2009 (91WA) $60 and Georges de Latour (93WA) $125...WOW! “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford is a mouthful. This big, brawny Cabernet Sauvignon is loaded with dark red fruit, smoke, tar and licorice. It shows gorgeous balance and fabulous length in an up-front style that is sure to find many admirers for many reasons, not the least of which is its soothing price tag. Despite its overt fruit, the 2009 seems to have more than enough structure to drink well for another 5-7 years, maybe more...90.” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate 12/11.

We just got more the Howell Mountain Cuvee by O’Shaughnessy!!! This Tiny Estate has long been one of our favorites! O’Shaughnessy Vineyards has been turning out exceptional wines from Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder for years and you know it. Every year this wine sells out practically immediately. The Mt Veeder Cuvee is long gone but the is more of the awesome Howell Mountain!!! “The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is comprised of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest six other grapes - Merlot, Malbec, St Macaire (how often do you see that!), Petit Verdot, Carmenere, and Cabernet Franc - and is aged 20 months in three-fourths French oak. It has a dense purple color, a wonderful, crystalline nose of crushed rock, camphor, creme de cassis and spring flowers, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. The tannins are moderately high, but they are soft and well-integrated. This is a wine of tremendous intensity and plenty of up-side. Give this wine 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 20-25 years... 94+” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 12/10 In case you’ve forgotten why O’Shaughnessy is one of our favorite little gems...just check out the historical track record of this cuvee. It has a dense purple color, a wonderful, crystalline nose of crushed rock, camphor, creme de cassis and spring flowers, and a fullbodied mouthfeel. The tannins are moderately high, but they are soft and well-integrated. This is a wine of tremendous intensity and plenty of up-side...94+.” WA 12/10.

Cali 91pt Cabernet for Only $13.95 A just got a little nudge via Skype to check-out JamesSuckling.com. FOXGLOVE 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon - 91 points!!! WOW...we have long been big fans of Foxglove as this CentralCalifornian has consistently been one of the best value brands especially for their Chardonnay. Owned, operated and made by the Varner family (yes Varner Estate from Santa Cruz) it is no wonder why these wines are so good. The past few years we have noticed the quality of the red wines get better and better and with stellar vintages like 2007 we really saw some great quality. With the 2009 Vintage being very similar to 2007 in style and quality it is no big surprise that the Varner’s have knocked it out of the park with the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is one great value that is perfect to load up on by the CASE!

Insider Secret Alert: The Triumphant Return of... Finally the Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon is BACK! It has not been since the 2006 Vintage that we have had the Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon back in the shop. December was the launch of the New Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon 2009! With a new look, a tremendous vintage (2009) and an exceptional new pedigree. First things first: the Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Napa Valley fruit sourced from some of the finest vineyards of Napa. Including the likes of Stagecoach, Beckstoffer To Kalon and Beckstoffer Dr. Crane. The winery and winemaking team behind this luxurious wine have asked to remain anonymous. What we can tell you is that this team has turned out exceptional “Cult” Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Blends vintage after vintage consistently garnering mid to high 90 point reviews from Robert Parker and now Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate. As we did use the term “Cult” - yes their labels sell for on average $125 to $150 per bottle upon release with many wines only being available via mailing list. To say there is an exceptional winemaker behind this team is an understatement. This young man has an outstanding track record and this project’s consultant is one of the biggest names in consulting today. Now to the vintage: the 2009 vintage is an excellent vintage in a string of solid vintages for Napa Valley

With a 94 point (Outstanding) overall score from the Wine Advocate team of Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni, 2009 is the perfect follow up to the landmark vintages of 2007 and 2005. “The 2009 reds are gorgeous, beautifully balanced reds with silky tannins, radiant fruit and huge early appeal...deliver considerable pleasure right out of the gate...Overall, I found 2009 to be a very consistent vintage in terms of the personality of the wines certainly much more so than 2008...” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate 12/11. Putting all the pieces together-this 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon has one exceptional pedigree already and is a textbook example of the 2009 vintage. Rich, powerful, concentrated but enjoyable right out of the gate! JN
