The More Things Change… The More They Stay The Same To say that things are “different” here at Zachys since I started in the family business 19 years ago would be the understatement of the year. It makes me feel old when I tell my kids that I started selling wine at Zachys BEFORE the internet started (the internet really started to take off in 1994). Back then my father-in-law told me that we had 2 great things going for us...SERVICE & SELECTION The day-to-day business was run writing orders on pads while we assisted customers on the phone and in the store. The daily customer interaction was overwhelming, tiring and rewarding all at the same time. We all saw most of the orders from beginning to end (i.e. if I took your order over the phone I was likely the guy who ran into the basement, packed up your order, processed the sale and handed it off to our delivery department for shipment or staged for an in-store pick up). Flash forward to today where we have seen a natural shift in our business from “Front of the House” (the way we sold wine 19 years ago) to the “Back of the House” (the way we sell wine today with the internet playing a huge part). We have learned to adapt our business for our clients because what was important to the family 19 years ago is still of paramount importance today...SERVICE & SELECTION The reason I bring all this up in the introduction to our Fall Zachys Gazette is that I am reminded of its importance as I flip through the pages of this catalogue. The passion and commitment by the dozens and dozens of Zachys employees shines through on a daily basis here in Scarsdale—whether it be serving your needs in the store, on the phone, via e-mail or through the web site. I am SO PROUD of what I see go on here. We have managed to find a way for our culture to transcend time and the ever-changing retail landscape. Finally, we have undoubtedly one of the finest selections of wines & spirits (yes we are super amped on the premium spirits category now!!!) from around the globe at all price points. While the human interaction has changed quite a bit over the last decade we will all be here to serve your needs. At the end of the day the wine world is a whole lot of fun to be working in because we are surrounded by great people, passionate clients and an industry that is forever changing from vintage to vintage. As the internet continues to change and evolve we will be sure to be the same Zachys as you have always remembered. Here’s to the great beginning of Fall and all the happy times we have ahead until the close of 2012. All my best,

WE = Wine Enthusiast WS = Wine Spectator

Sparkling Wine

Best New Sparkling Wine Finds—Great Bubbles for the Money We have spent the last 8 months searching for some new additions in the Bubbly categorand have found three great new selections that really caught our attention. With the majority of Champagne prices on the rise, we found these three wines to really deliver for their price to quality ratio. First up is the Chateau de l’Aulee Brut Elegant from the Loire Valley in France. Technically a Touraine Methode Traditionnelle, this bottle of bubbles is very Champagne like. With excellent depth, elegance and finesse this wine is on par, quality wise, to many of the big name Champagne houses. At only $14.95, this Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay blend bridges the traditional flavors of Champagne and Cremant de Loire beautifully. The complexity and depth is here adding a more accessible ease and roundness to the wine. Next up is hands down one of the most insane deals we have ever come across of for Sparkling Wine. The Col Mesian Spumantes of Italy are only $10.99 per bottle! You have to try these wines to believe it. The quality is excellent for the price. Coming from the Veneto region of Italy the Col Mesian Spumantes are essentially coming from vineyards close to Soave and Valpolicella. Based on a blend of Chardonnay and Gargenega these wines offer clean, fresh flavors that are extremely refreshing. The Spumante Brut is fresh, lively and loaded with citrus, tropical overtones that give the off-dry nature of the wine a comparable sweetness level to Prosecco but has more body and roundness. The Rosé is nice and dry with plenty of red fruit notes and a hint of Chambord and orange zest in the finish. All in all these two really deliver for the price and are great alternatives to Prosecco. Zachys Testimonial “I have learned my lesson and you can let your subscribers know this from me, too. We are inundated with emails virtually every hour that exclaim in hyperbolic terms about “great” deals that unfortunately do not hold up under scrutiny. Your messages are among the few I actually pay attention to because they’re almost always of interest and represent real value. Plus, when you say “act quickly,” it’s not a cheap sales tactic. I have learned this the hard way - your best offers always sell out quickly! Regards from a loyal customer.” Benjamin - April 2012

Their Finest Vintage Ever!

Late Release Vintage Champagne

“2002 Comtes de Champagne – the most striking and complete of the four vintages I tasted (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005). The 2002 is a magnificent CdC layered with sumptuous fruit. It boasts stunning depth and an endless, haunting finish. A very short crop for Taittinger. I imagine the 2002 will disappear from the market as soon as people taste it. The 2002 CdC was one of the most remarkable wines I tasted during the week I spent in Champagne in March. If you like CdC, this is a must-have vintage.” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate posted on eRobertParker.com Bulletin Board 4/25/2012.

With most houses releasing their 2004 vintages, Charles Ellner earlier this year just released for the first time the 2001 Brut Prestige. One of the last 2001s to be released, this is ready to go. Showing some great bottle age on it already that has developed beautiful roundess and depth the 2001 Charles Ellner is one of the better buys when it comes to expensive vintage Champagne. JN

z Bollinger Special Cuvee—New Look...Same Great Wine!

This fall many of us will be doing double takes when we look at a bottle of Bollinger Special Cuvee. The wine has a new look—Specifically a new bottle. The Champagne House Bollinger has dug deep into their archives and found that they used to bottle their Champagnes in a very sleek and slender bottle that is very close in design to Champagne Krug. After years of research, Bollinger has found that the older bottle design is better for ageing the Champagne and controlling the perlage (bubbles.) So here we are, a new look to Bollinger’s Special Cuvee. The wine is the same and just as delicious as ever. The 2002 Grande Annee which has been a huge hit with you will not be in this new bottle design as it will take a few years to work the new bottle into the Grande Annee production. However, here is an insider’s tip for October/November. Coinciding with the release of the new James Bond film there will be a special limited release of Bollinger’s Grande Annee 2002 in a one of a kind 007 bottle. That’s all I can say before MI6 and Bollinger are all over me, but look for it this fall from us. In the meantime, make sure you have plenty of Bollinger in the cellar now! JN

Special Cuvee Brut NV (93WS) {#20685} ..............................48.00 “A lovely, balanced Champagne, with mineral and toast notes accenting flavors of quince, green pear, white peach and verbena. Backed by firm acidity, this shows impressive texture and finesse. Like a mosaic, all the pieces come together to make a beautiful whole....93.” WS 11/11.

Grande Annee 2002 (98W&S) {#143992} ...............................98.00 “There is Champagne, and then there is 2002 Bollinger. This wine makes me dizzy, stammering in cross-eyed bliss. Taking a step back, the sustained chord of flavor comes into focus, revealing a limestone honey: scents of acacia, marzipan, apricot and golden citrus. Jamal Rayyis, one of our tasters with the broadest flavor library in his head, describe the scent as loomi (dried lime) and dried apricot, as if walking into a Middle Eastern market. Flavor details aside, the wine’s richness softens the structural grandeur of the vintage, which is buoyed in a mineral bath of power. This will reward another ten or 20 years of age, and the bottles that remain will likely only feed the wine’s legend...98.” W&S 12/11.

Grande Annee Rosé 2002 (97W&S) {#349646} ...................195.00 “The sheer intensity and power of this wine is awesome, an almost violent red from the addition of Coteaux Champenois pinot noir from La Côte de Enfants...It’s in overdrive when first opened, an extreme wine with the redness of roses on fire, the impacted flavor of seashell minerality and the cool crispness of apple skin. A day later, the wine is effortlessly detailed, blissfully rich with the subtle toastiness derived from fermentation in old oak barrels. The acidity is there to keep it fresh for as long as it lives, a life that will be measured in decades...97.” W&S 12/11.

Ssshh… Insider Secret: Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Long revered as the pinnacle of single-vineyard champagne bottling, Philipponnat Clos des Goisses has been an insider secret, despite a flawless track record. Where blending is commonplace in Champagne production, Clos des Goisses is never blended and always single-vintage, showcasing the power and beauty of this vineyard site nestled in the southern most facing aspect of grand cru, Aÿ. Marked by power and elegance the Clos des Goisses poses a lovely juxtaposition between the airy and effervescent nature of Champagne and the rich muscularity presented with each sip. Let this beautiful bottle of Champagne take center-stage with your next intimate gathering of friends and family this fall and become part of this inside secret! EK

It demonstrates an outstanding sense of refinement and finesse, with a silky texture and a tense, elongated shape on the palate; above all, it finishes with a complex, multi-dimensional fragrance, anchored by a piercing note of saline minerality and persisting with exceptional length, nuance and poise. This will be stunning, but it will likely take another decade or even two to fully reveal its character and depth—if you open it now, be sure you have additional bottles in the cellar for the future. 90pt $10 Bordeaux?!

The Wine’s Name is G-L-O-R-I-A, Gloria

Yes and No! Yes, this is a 90 point Bordeaux Blend from France. However technically Bergerac is not part of Bordeaux.

And the 2009 is the “Best ever from here and one of the best values of the vintage.”

Coming from a bit further east along the Dordogne is Bergerac. The proximity to the Right Bank of Bordeaux is very close and thus the wines produced in Bergerac of course are dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Franc for the reds.

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself as I was scanning through our inventory and noticed a healthy chunk of Chateau Gloria 2009 is about to arrive in our warehouse as this gazette is going to be printed.

This wine comes from a beautiful little property that has turned out a red Bergerac that really has knocked our socks off for the price. At only $9.99 per bottle this red blend that includes some very old Malbec is impressive from the beginning. Deep fruit, good spice and really nice texture make this extreme value really stand-out. Plus, the recent 90 point review on this wine really cements how much of a value it truly is. This is a great everyday alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux. It delivers and won’t break the bank! JN

Great Value!

Yeasty notes of baked bread and freshly crushed blackberries lead to a clean, round, pleasantly juicy wine on the tongue. Copious amounts of black fruit flavors...90.” SWJ 8/12.

We’ve been waiting for this wine to arrive as this beauty has received tremendous praise and the proven popularity of Gloria frankly is only rivaled by Lynch Bages. The 2009 Gloria is largely considered to be the finest wine produced at this Chateaux with James Suckling and Robert Parker both citing this belief in their final reviews of the 2009 vintage. Always one of the smarter buys of the vintage the 2009 Gloria certainly possesses the potential to age gracefully overtime without having to spend over $100 per bottle. This is one wine that serious collectors and avid consumers alike will want to be stocking up on. JN

Fuller-bodied, more concentrated and extracted than most vintages with soft tannins, its low acidity and a sumptuous, plump style remind me of a modern day version of the 1982... Refreshing, Compelling… White Bordeaux

Finally Released— Chateau Latour’s 2006 Pauillac!

La Grande Metairie is one of the great little wines of the Entre-DeuxMers that really delivers. Especially for a wine that is only $11.95 per bottle! This is what White Bordeaux is all about. Refreshing, compelling and that perfect companion to everything from oysters, lobster and of course chicken. JN

The third wine of Chateau Latour simply called Pauillac is one that many clamor to secure. The 2006 was a late release as the Chateau decided to hold it back to a more ideal time to enjoy the wine. Thus the 2007 vintage has already come and gone. But now we are taking a step back and the 2006 vintage has just arrived. JN

z Spoiler Alert!

Once this gazette gets out there, my peers in the industry (especially all those sommeliers) are going to be calling me a spoiler. Mugneret-Gibourg is a darling of the industry and their wines are being gobbled up by sommeliers and limited collectors across the globe. The production is tiny for this domaine yet the wines are magnificent and in general are still well under the radar. So, if you are reading this pay attention!!! Bourgogne Vezelay—What’s That?! From my days of working in French restaurants of New York City I have always had an appreciation for the smaller and more obscure areas of France that produce wine. Many times it is an area that is smack dab in the middle of a major region such as Burgundy. Vezelay is the perfect example. One of the areas that is outside of Chablis, Vezelay is known for producing excellent Chardonnay that are very much in line with the likes of Chablis. Domaine MontanetThoden which was first introduced to me by Kermit Lynch almost 15 years ago is one of the finest producers of the region. Their Le Galerne 2010 is a great example of the quality that is being achieved in these vineyards. Racy and dry this wine has the Chablis like aromatics and texture with frankly more zip than most Chablis. The refreshing factor here is off the charts good. Another great alternative to Chablis! JN

z A Little Gem of a White Burgundy “Readers will have a hard time finding a more polished, harmonious white Burgundy for the money.” Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 8/12. You got that right Antonio!!! We fell in love with this wine on our two tasting trips to Maison Louis Jadot over the past two years. Yes we are both talking about the Marsannay Blanc 2010!!! This little gem of a White Burgundy is scrumptious in the 2010 vintage. But don’t just take our word on it, check-out one of the most compelling reviews we have ever seen for an under $40 bottle of White Burgundy. “A gorgeous wine, the 2010 Marsannay is refined and utterly impeccable. Readers will have a hard time finding a more polished, harmonious white Burgundy for the money. Citrus, white peaches and crushed rocks are some of the many nuances that flow from this taut, focused Marsannay. Clean, saline notes frame the textured, inviting finish. In 2010, the Marsannay was aged partly in steel, which contributes to the wine’s freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2012+. Once again, I tasted with Jacques Lardiere and Frederic Barnier during a marathon session that lasted several hours. Lardiere has been on a whirlwind tour celebrating his last year at Jadot before his long-announced retirement, but I will believe he is stepping down when I see it. Lifers like Lardiere simply don’t retire. As for the wines, Jadot’s 2010s are unqualified successes across the board. Of course, the wines from the most prestigious appellations are often compelling, but frankly I find just as much joy in discovering the many fabulous Burgundies from unheralded villages that are sprinkled throughout this portfolio. Lardiere and Barnier first thought 2010 was better for reds than whites, but that gap has narrowed recently in their opinion…” Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 8/12. It doesn’t get much better than this!!! This little beauty is due to arrive later this month and we highly recommend stocking up on this one. JN

Benchmark of the Village Chassagne Montrachet and Domaine Ramonet are synonymous. The two go together like DRC and La Tache or Screaming Eagle and Napa Valley. Ramonet is to many the benchmark of Chassagne Montrachet and is the estate that brought forth the most attention in the United States for the wines of Chassagne Montrachet. Ramonet along with their importer Chateau & Estates can single handed be credited for making Chassagne Montrachet one of the most sought after villages for white Burgundy in the United States today. Over the years, Domaine Ramonet has not faltered. The quality across their entire range is always consistent and no matter the vintage, overall, Ramonet finds a way to succeed. The 2009 village Chassagne Montrachet is a great example of top quality village wine that is enjoyable now. JN

The Greatest White Burgundy Vintage in a Decade! “The 2010 white Burgundies are some of the most riveting young wines I have ever tasted. In the finest examples readers will find superb richness, vibrant acidity and great transparency to site. These are marvelously complete wines that bring together the depth of fruit typically found in ripe years with the classicism, minerality and tension that are the signatures of cooler vintages. That all adds up to viscerally thrilling wines that at their best capture the essence of everything great Burgundy can be…” Antonio Galloni, the Wine Advocate 8/12. The 2010 Vintage for White Burgundy is one of the finest we have ever seen. But then you knew that already since we have been shouting it for over a year now. This past August our praise for the 2010 White Burgundy vintage has been supported by the massive reviews that Antonio Galloni and the Wine Advocate have posted. Posted only on erobertparker.com, the Wine Advocate’s coverage on the 2010 White Burgundy vintage is extremely comprehensive and holds tremendous praise for the vintage as a whole and plenty of great wines. So much so that this could easily be the Greatest White Burgundy Vintage In a Decades! In digesting all the info thus far and still crunching more there are some producers/estates that have just totally nailed it with the 2010 vintage. Those that excelled are some of the biggest names in Burgundy today. One winemaker that excelled in the 2010 White Burgundy vintage was Louis Jadot’s legendary Jacques Lardiere, who incidentally is retiring making 2010 his last vintage. And what a vintage to end on! Jadot has turned out some of the finest White Burgundies of 2010 topped off with a near perfect Le Montrachet that Antonio Galloni has given 98 points too! Of course, some of the perennial top producers are at the top again in 2010 as well like Domaine Leflaive, Joseph Drouhin, Guy Roulot, Simon Bize, Sauzet, and Henri Boillot. There are plenty of wines that have tremendously high ratings between 93 and 98 points. BUT there is also a ton of amazing wines from great estates that have turned out amazing 90 to 93 point wines that are great for drinking now or in the next few years to come. All in all 2010 is the best White Burgundy Vintage we have seen in at least ten years. As always with Burgundy supplies are limited and thus our stock may only be bottles. Two of My Personal Favorites of the 2010 Vintage I try every year to get to Burgundy and taste. This year I made it over to Burgundy in early February for one solid week. The days were jammed packed with appointments and I along with a few team members ran up and down the Cote d’Or tasting. Over the course of the week we tasted at some of the biggest names in Burgundy as well as some of the smallest names. Yes, we had the chance to taste some of the most sought after wines of the 2010 vintage: Rousseau Chambertin and Clos de Beze, DRC Romanee Conti and La Tache, Liger-Belair La Romanee etc… However, honestly two of my personal favorites and two wines that would be in my top ten picks of the vintage come from Domaine de l’Arlot. Their Nuits St Georges Clos des Forets and the Vosne Romanee Les Suchots 2010s are two wines that have stuck with me since that tasting. They were stunning. They stopped me dead in my tracks. I’ve always enjoyed the wines at l’Arlot and I expected good wines but I never expected wines of this quality. The depth and structure of both wines is very impressive. The aromatics are alluring and captivated me for well over an hour. I kept going back to these two wines in the tasting, even though there was one very impressive Romanee St Vivant in the line-up. These two wines are show stoppers and frankly in my opinion are the two finest wines for the money from Nuits St Georges and Vosne Romanee in 2010. JN

“All of the best qualities of the vintage come through in the 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Pucelles. The 2010 boasts stunning depth and definition. Smoke, slate, ripe stone peaches and butter burst from the glass as this vivid, kaleidoscopic wine shows off its pedigree. In 2010, the Pucelles is simply explosive. A Mountain of Silex and Pur Sang: Greatest Sauvignon Blancs Today!? The ship has come in...Full of Silex and Pur Sang from Domaine Didier Dagueneau! As Andrew and Brian said to me—we have a mountain of this now in-stock. Never before have we been able to get the quantities of Silex or Pur Sang like this. The late Didier Dagueneau revolutionized white wine production in the Loire Valley for Sauvignon Blanc turning the traditions and global expectations upside down. Making the world pay attention with many around the globe as far as New Zealand and California attempting to emulate the Dagueneau style. However, many have tried, no one has truly succeeded. Didier’s touch was special and unique, a gift frankly that he has passed onto his son and daughter. They were there every step of the way, experimenting and learning from their father. The Dagueneau style has remained intact and the quality and allure of Silex and Pur Sang has not faltered. If you want to try one of the greatest examples of Sauvignon Blanc then all you need to do is try a bottle of Silex and Pur Sang. These wines represent the heights in which Sauvignon Blanc can achieve. Their exotic nature is alluring yet their precision and focus is mind-boggling. These are excellent wines that drink well young and age gracefully. JN

Meet the New Faces of Zachys

Elizabeth Keyser, Assistant Wine Buyer

Gregarious and nerdy I find myself simultaneously comfortable dancing around the sales floor, pouring a bottle of bubbly or curled up with my nose in a book researching climats in Burgundy. I joined Zachys in 2010, earnest as ever, and I quickly felt at home under the tutelage of Zachys greats who encouraged my obsession with the wine regions of Burgundy, Champagne, Tuscany and Piedmont. Never one to turn down a challenge (or a great bottle of wine), I find myself truly blessed to work with equally passionate friends and mentors who approach wine with reckless abandon, adventure and soul.

When the temperatures spike into the 90s, all I care about are clean, crisp wines – and my go-to refresher is Sancerre. The Kimmeridgian soil and climate of Sancerre are perfect for producing vibrant, crisp and clean Sauvignon Blanc rich with minerality and racy acidity. Claude Riffault is recognized as a master of the Loire Valley producing balanced and driven wines that are full of expressive varietal character, earning 90+ points from Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate. The Sancerre Les Boucads is marked by an elegant balance of minerality and acidity, displaying ample citrus fruit and tangy depth. The perfect wine to kick-back and relax with. EK

This wonderful Chardonnay from Southern-France was personally reviewed by Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate this past June receiving a whopping 90 point review. All we can say is WOWSERS!!! Plus we almost forgot to point out that the average price in the market is $12 to $14 per bottle BUT we are offering it to you for only $10.95 per bottle. JN

There is also a salty sea breeze character reminiscent of the crushed oyster shell-like note...This crisp, fresh, medium-bodied Cotes Catalanes exhibits lots of earthy/terroir characteristics. If Only Most Sancerre Was This Good or Interesting! Menetou..who?! Menetou Salon a small village that produces Sauvignon Blanc based wines in the Loire Valley only minutes away from Sancerre. Many of us in the USA have never heard or had the wines. The wines are good, many times much better than Sancerre, and very often much more affordable! The La Tour Saint Martin is just one of those great examples of a very good bottle of wine at a very good price! JN

#1 of the Top 100 Again?! Could be! The Wine Spectator Advance has just come out. The highest rated wine of the Advance is the Clos des Papes 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape at 98 points! This makes the 2010 Clos des Papes tied with the 2005 vintage for the highest rated Clos des Papes ever from the Wine Spectator. 2010 Tasting Note: “Lots of cocoa powder and coffee frame dark plum, black currant and fig fruit, with massively endowed tannins. Cassis, anise and tea notes hang back for now, but should emerge more with cellaring. The very dark finish is dominated by charcoal-coated grip, but the purity still wins out in the end. Very, very large. Best from 2017 through 2035.—J.M.” WS 10/12. 2005 Tasting Note: “Really tight now, but packed with dark fig, currant, espresso, licorice and chocolate notes. Superfleshy but seriously structured, there’s layer after layer of sweet spice, fruit and minerality pumping through the finish, with lots of latent depth and power. Far more backward than the 2003 or 2004 on release, but since this red typically puts on weight as it ages, it should be a monster--à la the 1990--when it reaches its peak. 94pt Gigondas! It’s no secret that 2010 is a stellar vintage in the Rhone and for benchmark producer, Santa Duc, it is without a doubt another show stopper. 92+ “One of the up-and-coming superstars of the appellation”

Greatest Value of the Rhone?!

I’ve been waiting and waiting to get this information out to you. Finally everything has been firmed up and now we can get the word out.

The 2010 vintage for the Rhone Valley is a tremendous one for both the North and South. Robert Parker’s vintage chart has given the North 94 points overall and the South 97 points overall. The Cotes du Rhone St Esprit is from vineyards that lie in the Southern Rhone where Mr. Parker has rated the vintage overall 97 points—just one point shy from what he calls the Southern Rhone’s Greatest Vintage ever: 2007.

This wine takes the cake at under $10 per bottle!

As Robert Parker has stated, “Domaine Giraud is one of the up-andcoming superstars of the appellation [Chateauneuf du Pape].” This family has been taking the Southern-Rhone by storm turning out some of the finest wines of the vintage. The only problem is now Robert Parker has left the “cat out of the bag” and their 92+ Cotes du Rhone is flying out of here. JN

You may recall the 2007 Delas Cotes du Rhone was a blockbuster and a steal at 90 points from the Wine Advocate and only $10 per bottle. The 2010 is almost an exact duplicate of the 2007 vintage. The depth and power is here. The fruit and spice are just as alluring. And the VALUE is still possibly the GREATEST in the Rhone Valley!!! JN

What Cotes du Rhone Is All About!

The winning numbers when it comes to tremendous Chateauneuf du Pape! Everyone agrees the 2009 Clos de Papes is AMAZING. With the Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, Rhone Report and International Wine Cellar all giving the wine a 95 or 96 point score you can trust in this wine delivering. JN

Pierre Henri Morel knows a thing or two regarding what Cotes du Rhone should be. As Michel Chapoutier’s right hand man at Chapoutier, Pierre not only works on crafting wines from the North but the South as well. Plus with his own wines now focused solely on the Southern Rhone, his Cotes du Rhone Village Signargues is what textbook Cotes du Rhone is all about. JN

Gorgeous kirsch liqueur notes, raspberry jam, forest floor, spice box, new saddle leather and a peppery spiciness are all present in this deep, voluptuously textured, openknit Clos des Papes, which is atypically forward, luscious and approachable already. These wines often need a good 5-10 years of cellaring in the more structured vintages, but the 2009 is gorgeous from the get-go. This full-bodied, deep, concentrated wine has a deep purple color and should drink well for 20-25 years without ever really closing down. Power, Elegance, Depth

Just How Good Is the 2010 Vintage!?!

Chateau Saint Jean is one very impressive little estate on the outskirts of Rasteau. This is what old-school, powerhouse Cotes du Rhone, Rasteau is all about. The power and depth here is huge for a wine of this price point and the elegance indicates a winemaker of years of experience. JN

The Janasse 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is the perfect wine to test out to make up your mind on just how good the 2010 vintage really is. This entry level Chateauneuf du Pape will most likely cement the fact that 2010 is one of the Greatest Vintages for the Rhone in the past 20 plus years! JN

Rhone / Southern France

z

The Black Wines of Southern France France is wine ‘mecca’ when it comes to diversity of high quality production. Southern France is clearly know for powerful reds that incorporate depth of fruit and spice into the wines. The grapes used vary from region to region and today the idea of Southern France is dominated by the Rhone Valley and two regions that are widely spoken of as one: Languedoc and Roussillon. However, there is more to Southern France than these magnificent regions. South of the Rhone Valley lies Provence with the historic region of Bandol. Largely considered the home of Mouvedre, Bandol wines are black in color with deep dark fruit notes that merge into very savory earthy overtones with intense structure and body. Most Bandol upon release really needs time to evolve and soften. The Domaine Terrebrune is no exception and now this beauty from the 2007 Vintage is just starting to come around and soften up. This is about as text book as you can come to Bandol and is one very intriguing glass of wine.

Beyond Bordeaux, Beyond Rhone— Puech Haut Prestige! Chateau Puech-Haut is turning out some amazing wines and the 2010 Prestige is another resounding success. Already with a stellar 94 point review from the Rhone Report, the 2010 Prestige is an excellent follow-up to the 2009 Prestige that Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate raved about awarding the wine 93 points blind and 94 points non-blind. Robert Parker and the Wine Advocate have not yet released any reviews on the 2010 Prestige but all things point to another stellar score in the future. But why wait?! This wine is excellent!!! We have tasted both the 2010 and 2009 side by side and the 2010 is by far a superior wine. Overall the 2010 is a more balanced wine that showcases fresher aromatics and fruit. The nose of the 2010 is much more floral and savory and the body of the 2010 Prestige is full and rich yet with more elegance and light than the 2009 which is frankly denser and chewier. All in all the 2010 Prestige is a great wine for the money at only $20.99 per bottle! This is a great alternative to Bordeaux or Southern-Rhone wines and for all you value oriented Super-Tuscan fans out there too… you need to break down and try a bottle of this. This wine just bridges all the gaps of top quality wine and really delivers for the money. JN

The other two regions of Southern France that turns out very black wines are Cahors and Madiran. Both are part of what is commonly referred to as the Sud-Ouest. These two regions are south of Bordeaux and incorporate Bordeaux varietals but the traditional wines are heavily based on Malbec for Cahors and Tannat for Madiran. Both grapes are known for producing very dark colored wines that have significant structure. Cahors is typically black and vibrant in color with more fruit aromatics and clove spice aromas. While Madiran is more tannic, still dark in color but has more herbal and soil aromatics. The L’Instant Cahors is a perfect example of the depth and power that Cahors is known for even-though it is only $11.99 per bottle. The Labranch Laffont Madiran delivers the power and grip of Tannat with beautiful earthy notes and spice. The finish is very long, dry and powerful making it the perfect foil for grilled red meats. All in all these three ‘black wines’ are perfect for the cool evenings of late summer and early fall. They deliver depth, power and complexity at very affordable prices. JN

“Even better than the brilliant .09, with more elegance and freshness, the 2010 Chateau Puech-Haut Coteaux du Languedoc Saint-Drezery Cuvee Prestige is a custom cuvee made by Philippe Cambie and Eric Solomon. An absurd value and a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, and 5% Carignan that.s aged half in concrete and half in neutral barrel, it possesses a vivid, semi-opaque purple color to go with captivating aromas of raspberry liqueur, cassis, fresh flowers, sappy underbrush, and licorice-like qualities that simply soar from the glass. On the palate, this impeccably put together Languedoc has a pure, polished profile, with a sappy, resinous tactile sensation in its full-bodied texture, perfect balance, and a long, seamless finish. Grand Cru of the Mediterranean…Comte Abbatucci is in France The wines of Jean-Charles Abbatucci will stop you in mid sip. They are utterly unique, compelling, confounding and mesmerizing. The care and attention to detail is beyond fanatical; yet the wines evoke soul and a sense of place that most winemakers yearn to produce. Certified biodynamic, Abbatucci believes in following even the most far-out biodynamic practices to the letter. On his large estate south of Ajaccio he keeps a pristine poly-culture ecosystem in place, complete with herds of sheep foraging through his vines, groves of olive trees on ancient terraces, and large swaths of untouched forests. His vines come from cuttings of indigenous grapes, sourced decades ago high up in the isolated and mountainous interior of the island from elderly peasant farmers, effectively saving several native varieties from extinction. To keep his vines happy, he’s known to drive his tractor out to his vineyards and play traditional Corsican polyphonic songs over loudspeakers for their benefit. After the harvest he’ll treat his cellar to the same music as his grapes ferment and come of age. All part of the terroir, he says. Does all this have an actual effect on the wine? Have a taste for yourself. JN Never tried wines from Corsica before? Take a look what Wine Advocate had to say about these wines: “I can think of few if any wines that have given me a more delightful jolt of discovery in the past year than those of Jean-Charles Abbatucci, grown outside Ajaccio, Corsica’s capital and only large city, in the long-standing, eponymous appellation on this island’s granitic western coast. A believer in biodynamics; poly-culture; and the preservation and propagation of ancient vines and selections massales…” David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate August 2011.

Italy Sassicaia At Both Ends Of The Spectrum...And Something In Between!!! Zachys has had a long history of selling the wines of Tenuta San Guido...starting with my father-in-law and now continuing on with Jeff and me. There’s a reason the relationship has been real successful: They make really great wines and we love selling them. Pretty simple huh? This Fall marks the beginning of the new releases from the estate, and we have a little something for everybody. Whether you are looking for a deliciously easy daily selection (Le Difese 2010), a more traditional Bolgheri Blend (Guidalberto 2010) or something really special to stock away in the cellar for the special occasions (Sassicaia 2009), there is a little something for everybody with these new releases. Most years we sell through our yearly allocation in less than 6 months...so now is a great time to snatch the new-release wines before they are gone. AM

What Am I Drinking At Home This Fall…. The Answer Is Simple!! I won’t bore you with all the technical details, but every Fall I send a case of this old-vine Barbera to my house because it has great “energy” and “Lift” and is always sure to put a smile on my face. So when asked what the McMurray’s are drinking at home this Fall the answer is simple… AM

Back-To-Back Greatness: BOTH 2006 & 2007 Brunello Deliver!!! This juicy juicy vintage delivers a very fruit forward and precocious style of Brunello that are very reasonably priced. I find the 2007’s to be equally as exciting as the 2006’s for their more immediate pleasure. Whenever vintages are referred to as being in the qualitative level of 1997 one should definitely take note! AM “Brunello di Montalcino has never had two consecutive great vintages—but it did in 2007 and 2006, and now they are both on the market. The question is, which is better?... I think the 2007 Brunellos are slightly more drinkable than the 2006s at this stage because of their juicer and slightly riper fruit character… Both of these new vintages should age beautifully considering they are similar to the quality of the great 1997… Both are super vintages for Brunello di Montalcino…” jamessuckling.com 1/12.

What Does “Perfection” Taste Like? We always need to remember that a rating or review of a wine by the professional wine critics is just one person’s opinion of how a wine tasted on one singular day. There are many variables that can go into how a wine may be showing (or not), how it is perceived by the reviewer and it what context this particular wine is tasted among others. Quite honestly, your definition of “perfect” may be very different from that of the professional wine critics. With all that being said, my personal opinion is that this is a very very special bottle of Barolo that received very high praise from Antonio Galloni, Stephen Tanzer and a perfect 100 point score from James Suckling. A true treasure for all serious Barolo collectors. AM

Does It Get Any Easier Than This?!?! This wine has been on such total and absolute cruise control at Zachys for the last 3 years (hundreds of cases sold!!!), that I have not taken a lot of time to see what the critics are saying about it out there. I thought it would be fun to see and they are all oozing what most of you already know about this “nightly” red wine: “With an intense purple hue, this wine bursts with a juicy, mouthwatering bouquet of plum and cherry with hints of baking spice. Silky on the palate, finishing in ripe, velvety, sweet fruits, this wine will pair perfectly with any meal, from antipasti, to pizza, to pasta, to grilled meats. A rich, satisfying glass sure to please any crowd, you’ll be hard pressed to drink just one glass!” Wine Enthusiast, 7/11. “The 2010 Barbera d’Asti Lavignone flows from the glass with layers of effortless, plump fruit. It shows gorgeous inner perfume as it fleshes out in the glass. This is an attractive style...” Wine Advocate, 10/11. “…The Maccario family’s uncompromising commitment to quality is evidenced by their investment in the study of new and old Barbera clones... The Barbera d’Asti Lavignone 2010 features a translucent ruby robe, and starts with fresh aromas of violets, strawberries and raspberries… Impressively concentrated, with the intensity and spicy rose characteristics of the wine building from the midpalate through the moderately long finish…91.” Wine Of The Week - Sonoma Wine Journal 1/12. Meet the New Faces of Zachys

Stefan Wolansky, Wine Buyer

From Washington State Cabernet to Argentine Malbec Blends to South African Chenin Blanc, it’s always a thrill for me to try the new, different, or just plain unusual wines of the world! Italy, Oregon, Washington, New York, and the Southern Hemisphere have become my raison d’etre, and you can tell by my emails just how excited I am to talk about them! Anyone in this industry will tell you that there is always something new to learn about wine. So I say “take the plunge” and try something new whenever possible. And if variety truly is the spice of life, then consider my dishes well-seasoned!

z It Was Worth Freezing My Tail Off!!! Back in February Brian Mullaney and I were not in a warm and tropical wine region like Argentina. No, instead we thought it would be a good idea to freeze our tails off in Tuscany in search of some new and exciting wines for the store. We got what we wished for (In both cases!!) Although coming from a relatively unknown region of Umbria, Ficulle (Just outside of Orvieto), these 2 new red wines are sure to put a smile on your face. They certainly did for me….you can see my tasting video on these wines by going to www.andrewsangle.com. When I questioned why I had not seen these wines in the U.S. market in the past I was told that it had some “spotty” distribution. Nothing “spotty” about being at ZACHYS. Let’s shine our light on these two gems as they are total winners. As I said, totally worth the “pain & suffering.” AM

Two Months Later... And The Deal Looks Just As Good! Back at the start of August I sent an e-mail out to our Italian subscribers (Did you see it?) alerting them to the October arrival of a Chianti Riserva that has had an EXCELLENT track record in making the Wine Spectator Top 100 (2004 vintage was #56 and 2007 was #65). The Wine: Chianti Nipozzano Rufina Riserva Frescobaldi 2009 Come to think of it, the 2007 vintage was rated as the #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Enthusiast last year!! And they’ve done it again with this newest release...the 2009 vintage.

z Four Top Ports of 2012 Our top four Ports of 2012 are not even Vintage Ports! They are one Ruby Port, one 10 Year Old Tawny, and two 20 Year Old Tawny from three of the biggest names in Port today.

Forget What “They” Say It Should Cost!!! I have learned quite a few things about “market price” over the last few years of challenging economic times. Quite often there is a delta of what the winery/critics think a wine should sell for and what the market is actually willing to pay for it. There is no better example than these delicious new Portuguese arrivals here at the store...each selling from 39-66% below the published release prices. We made a very strong argument to the producer that it’s better to create value with your premier vintages and keep customers wanting more. Here’s your chance to scoop up some great reds for the Fall that TOTALLY over-deliver at these price points. Grab them while they last because this batch was a “one shot deal”. The margin of difference between The Wine Advocate’s “Current (Release Cost)” and the Zachys’ Sale Price are real eye poppers!!! How can you not load up?! AM

Croft has long been known as a great value house and their latest release of Ruby and 10 Year Tawny clearly exhibit the BANG for YOUR BUCK quality that this house is all about. The Fonseca 20 Year Tawny is always a classic and frankly overlooked by so many as we all race for the Fonseca Vintage Ports. The Fonseca 20 is exceptional and one of the greatest buys in Port in a long time. Lastly the Ramos Pinto 20 Year Tawny is still our favorite and the most consistent Tawny Port on the market today. The quality is always consistent and the more citrus and herbal style lightens up this wonderful Tawny Port while the Fonseca 20 is for those of us that want a darker more chocolaty style of Tawny. “EQUIPO NAVAZOS Cherry-picked Treasures, All Worth Drinking.” I couldn’t agree with Eric Asimov of the New York Times any more. There has not been a wine yet from Equipo Navazos aka La Bota that I have not enjoyed let alone fallen in love with. These are treasures of wines that are dug up from old Sherry Lodges that are then dusted off and bottled in small limited quantities. The results have been some of the most compelling Sherries bottled in modern day. Over the Summer, I had the chance to dine with Jesus Barquin one of the founders of Equipo Navazos along with Eric Asimov and the wine’s importer, Eric Solomon plus a few other die-hard Sherry fans. The dinner was an amazing tasting through roughly a dozen sherries alongside impeccable food from Mas la Grillade. I was a fan then but after that dinner I was ready to become a “preacher of the virtues of Sherry.” It was one of those great experiences that not only reaffirms ones beliefs but strips them down and rebuilds them stronger. The story of Equipo Navazos is not the story of one man but the story of many whose common thread is their love and appreciation of Sherry, a living history that is laying in cask and the challenge to shine the light back on one of the world’s greatest wine regions. That is what has brought these individuals together to form this unique group seeking out old soleras and casks within Jerez. Weeks later there was an article in the New York Times by Eric Asimov highlighting the changes that are occurring in Sherry today by leaders of the region that includes the member of Equipo Navazos. It is a fascinating read and an article worth checking out...Sherry fan or not. Eric has highlighted several producers to look for and of course Equipo Navazos is one of them. JN

Best of the Best of Rioja In the latest issue of the Wine Advocate there was a Rioja overview.

f o t Bes est! B e h t

Never before have we seen such an array of 93, 94, and 95 point wines!!! Longtime wine critic and member of the Wine Advocate team, Neal Martin, dove deep into Rioja as one of his first regional reports of covering Spain. The coverage by Mr. Martin is very comprehensive and extremely well done. The scores are HUGE for some of the greatest names in Rioja past, present and future. Plus, the coverage was not only on new releases but in many cases went back several years (1942 at one estate) as Rioja producers are notorious for slowly releasing stocks. We have been able to amass an exceptional range of wines at great prices from the 2005, 2004, 2001, 1998, and 1995 vintages. These are the best of the best of Rioja and frankly are some of the finest red wines for the money produced in all of Europe. JN

Wine from the Latest Parker Issue We’ve All Been Waiting For: Only $9.50 Finally, here we go! This is the wine we have all been waiting for from the Summer issue of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. From the Eric Solomon value profile: The 90 point Macedonia red wine that is ONLY $9.50 per bottle!!! For years I have been hearing about this project in the works. With international consultant Philippe Cambie making the wines the buzz on this has been huge. Then, last Spring I made a special trip up to Boston to taste the entire Eric Solomon portfolio and had a chance to taste this wine for the first time. It was no shock the wine was good, considering all the players involved but the richness, weight and sheer power the wine showed was amazing for a wine that we were only told would retail for under $12 per bottle. Eric, never during that tasting, confirmed the price to us and has kept us all waiting until now! It is only $9.50 per bottle and now Robert Parker has personally tasted the wine and given it the below stellar 90 point review!!! JN

The wine possesses gorgeous fruit, medium to full body, supple tannins and outstanding purity as well as length. His first of a four part list of wines to seek out are the wines of Tikves that Philippe Cambie of the Rhone Valley consults on. Clearly the wines left an impression on Mr. Parker as he awarded the Bela Voda 94 points in is impromptu post! Below is the post. And please don’t call us asking why Robert Parker’s posted image of himself is a gorilla. We don’t know!!! South Africa / Argentina 350 years of Wine Tradition – Old for them, New for us! It’s almost mind-boggling to believe that wine was being produced in South Africa more than 100 years before the USA was founded. Their rise to global prominence was steady until just a few years ago, when countries began looking elsewhere for value-driven wines. Already massively popular in Europe, we in the USA are starting to catch on to this trend. What used to be just a curiosity in a few wine shops became a legitimate source of wines of distinction and quality. Falling somewhere between Old World and New World in style, South African wine provides something for every palate, while still unique. From smoky Pinotage to juicy Chenin Blanc to lush Shiraz, South African wine rewards you with a massive level of quality for the price. SW

The 100pt Master’s Best Kept Secret... Michel Chapoutier is one of the finest winemakers of today. Producing wine from around the globe, Michel Chapoutier not only turns out highly acclaimed and sought after wines in the Rhone Valley but also extremely sought after wines from Alsace, Roussillon, and Australia. Highly regarded as one of the most talented vignerons in France, Michel has raised the quality bar very high and has consistently turned out exceptional wines vintage after vintage. All wines that Michel produces are either organically or biodynamically cultivated. A feat in its own and one that is extremely impressive considering the consistent quality that Michel is able to achieve in his wines. I pulled you in with the subject “the 100pt Master’s Best Kept Secret...” Let me first qualify the ‘100pt Master.’ Robert Parker has awarded 16 different wines from Michel Chapoutier 100 points since 1989. I think that qualifies Michel as a 100pt Master. Now for the best kept secret... Michel’s project in Australia with Terlato. The joint venture of Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier turns out fantastic wines that have been known to receive 97 point scores from Robert Parker. However the gem of the line-up is the Shiraz-Viognier. This value red has consistently scored well in the press with Wine Spectator awarding the wine three SMART BUY designations and one Top 100 placement since the 2004 Vintage. Yet this wine is still unknown. Today we are making it our mission to get the word out on this exceptional value from Michel Chapoutier that is the perfect everyday red. But there is more! We are also including more wines from Michel that really delivers from “Down Under.” JN Robert Parker on the Terlato & Chapoutier Project: “These Chapoutier wines are sometimes reviewed by my colleagues David Schildknect in his Languedoc-Roussillon report and Lisa PerrottiBrown in her reviews of Australian wines, so I will just list the wines, my score, and the region from which they emerge. They are of very high quality and deserve readers’ attention. Hopefully my prose has convinced more than a handful of readers to try these remarkable wines from one of the most fascinating and compelling personalities in the entire wine world, and one dedicated to the highest quality.” WA 12/11.

Wonders Down Under! The recent global downturn has been a blessing in disguise for Australia. Their currency has remained strong against just about every other, including the US dollar, making it harder for volume-driven wineries to maintain their margins. Region-specific, carefully crafted wines are now getting the attention they deserve! SW

Exceptional Sonoma Chardonnay

I’ve just thumbed through the new September Enthusiast Magazine and found one of the most incredible deals for Chardonnay that I have seen in a long time!

MacMurray Ranch is a great property in the Sonoma Coast that has long been regarded as one of the best properties for growing Chardonnay. Now with the majority of the grapes being reserved for the MacMurray Ranch wines rather than being sold off, we can see just how special this property is. Plus save a few dollars since we don’t have to pay up for marquee labels and names. JN

The 2009 Joseph Carr Dijon Clone Chardonnay has scored a whopping 94 points and this beauty is only $17.25 per bottle. It is no secret that there is plenty of great Chardonnay from California these days, but for one under $20 to receive such praise…that is an anomaly. We’ve locked and loaded as much of this terrific juice as possible. We know as soon as the news of this tremendous score gets out there that this wine is going to disappear in a flash. JN

Dijon Clone Chardonnay 2009 (94WE) {#364158} ................17.25 “Vintner Carr follows up on his great 2008 Reserve with this delicious bottling. In California, it’s usually a cinch to get fruit this ripe and tropical, and easy to plaster on lots of new oak. What’s hard is to fuse the elements seamlessly. This wine does, offering waves of Chardonnay opulence. It may have a touch of botrytis, but that’s in its favor...94.” WE 9/12.

A Compelling Pinot Noir Hirsch Winery located on the San Andreas fault in Western Sonoma Coast AVA covers 21 distinct farming blocks. With 4 single-vineyard cuvees produced in the 2009 vintage, perhaps the most compelling is the San Andreas Pinot Noir, a blend of all 21 farming blocks that represent the entirety of Hirsch Vineyards. Distinguished by acidic complexity, balance of tannins and fruit it’s as if the San Andreas blend gets to the crux of what makes the Western Sonoma Coast SO COMPELLING and what makes Hirsch Winery SO DISTINCT. Veering away from tooty-fruity and leaning towards brawny strength this pinot noir is wonderfully noted with Bing cherry, fig, lavender and orange blossom, simply a must try! EK

z Hot Newcomer: Chanin Wine Company At an age when most are learning Wine 101, Gavin Chanin, age 25, of the Chanin Wine Company has landed on the 2012 Forbes Top 30 under 30 list. To those who have been following the Santa Barbara wine scene, it comes with no surprise, after all, Chanin started his career working under acclaimed winemakers, James Clendenden of Au Bon Climat and Bob Lindquist of Qupé. Chanin’s winemaking harks to old world Burgundy, long ageing on lees and a judicious amount of oak use, producing wines that truly speak to a time and place. Dogged in his pursuit of balanced, qualitydriven winemaking, Chanin is turning heads and gaining praise across the wine world: “These striking, pure wines are all highly recommended. It will be fascinating to see where Chanin goes from here, but the future looks immensely promising.” Antonio Galloni WA 8/11. I was lucky to score an allocation of the Chanin Bien Nacido Chardonnay 2009 (only 400 cases made). This is an austere and commanding Chardonnay, made from 37-year old vines, and aged for 15 months on lees and 18 months before bottling. Luxuriously weighted on the palate with striking mineral notes, soft peach and racy ginger lead into a long clean finish. In a word, delicious.

We just got word this morning that a fantastic little 90 point Chardonnay has just officially left the West Coast bound for New York and another is already on the road.

Chanin’s wines are built to age, and priced to sell! Our allocation is tiny and once they’re gone, they’re gone. This is a don’t miss for Chardonnay lovers. EK

The wines in question are the 2010 Indian Wells Chardonnay from Chateau Ste Michelle and the 2010 H3 Chardonnay from Columbia Crest.

Chanin

Two of the more consistent Chardonnays from the West Coast, the Ste Michelle group who also owns and operate Columbia Crest, has created a global name for themselves as high quality—value oriented Chardonnay producers. Add to that the fact that between Chateau Ste Michelle and Columbia Crest combined over the past ten years has landed 13 wines in the Wine Spectator Top 100 with a Wine of the Year Honor in 2009. We are talking about an average of at least one wine every year in the Wine Spectator Top 100. No not all of their wines have been Chardonnays but for 2012 when looking at all the press that Ste Michelle and Columbia Crest are receiving it looks like one if not two of their Chardonnays are Top 100 Bound!

Massive Scores In Wine Advocate Antonio Galloni has dove deep into California’s Central Coast finding out that there is AMAZING wine to be had! Antonio’s coverage of the Central Coast in the August issue of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate was not only thorough but full of AMAZING wines that have received MASSIVE SCORES. There is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rhone Rangers in the mix with scores up to 97+ points! The producers in this offer include: Calera, one of the earlier pioneers of the Central Coast focused around Mount Harlan. Now with the vineyards in maturity the fruit of Josh Jensen’s labors are showing more than ever before. The Hilt, which is one of my new favorite producers for Pinot Noir is a project to watch from the guys behind Jonata. The Old Guard 2009 Pinot Noir is quite possibly one of the most striking California Pinot Noirs I have tasted all year! Paul Lato is a property we started to offer you last year with his knock-out 2009s. The 2010s are equally impressive if not better. Once again there is high scoring Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs and Antonio Galloni is calling Paul Lato “from one of California-s hottest under-the-radar producers.” Epoch is new to the scene but from the get go has turned out wines that have caught the attention of Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni. With scores constantly at 94 points this is another Rhone inspired property that is on the rise. Booker Vineyards is quite possibly the sleeper of the Rhone inspired vintners. With Sine Qua Non, Saxum and Alban all soaking up the spotlight, Booker has been under the radar. However the wines when reviewed by Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni have always scored on parr with the big three of Rhone Rangers. In this issue, Booker is tied for the highest rated Rhone inspired wine of the issue at 97+ points! All wines are in-stock but quantities are limited. JN

California’s New Reference Point for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir!!! Sommelier, Chef and Screaming Eagle influenced! Santa Barbara’s new winery Sandhi which we have already been touting has once again garnered massive press! The trio of former Screaming Eagle owner Charles Banks, former Chef Sashi Moorman and Sommelier Rajat Parr—a Burgundy specialist, has developed this amazing winery that is taking the expectations of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California and flipping them. “Sandhi is one of the most exciting new projects in California. The brainchild of investor Charles Banks, sommelier Rajat Parr and winemaker Sashi Moorman, Sandhi excels with cool-climate Chardonnays and Pinots from some of Santa Barbara’s top sites. Things change in California at a much faster pace than is common in other parts of the world. Investor-backed projects like Sandhi often have short lives. I hope that won’t be the case here because Banks, Parr and Moorman are on to something truly special. It is quite conceivable that within a few years the Sandi Chardonnays and Pinots could become reference point, benchmark wines for Santa Barbara, and California, for that matter. The overall approach at Sandhi focuses on picking on the early side...” Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate 9/12.

Best Value Pinot Noir Domestic Pinot Noir: Princes of Pinot... Inherently temperamental, beautiful, seductive and delicate Pinot Noir has long been one of the most sought after varietals, and the most difficult to grow. Once a grape who’s full potential could only be reached in the finest sites of Burgundy, Pinot Noir has been cropping up in both California and Oregon with great success. Not only is there no lacking in character, finesse and flavor but domestic Pinot Noir carries strength in quality-toprice ratio, offering brilliant wines for in most instances half the price of entry level Burgundy. Indeed, Burgundy will always be King of Pinot Noir but try some of these domestic Pinot Princes for a real eye-opener. EK

z Great Singular Expressions of Scotch! Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 as a family grocer, tea and wine and spirits merchant. In parallel with the grocery side of the enterprise, John Urquhart (one of the first employees of the shop) developed the whisky broking business begun by James Gordon, and in particular began to specialize in single malt whiskies—bottling under license for famous distilleries such as Macallan, Glenlivet, Glen Grant, Linkwood and Mortlach. As part of this business he began to select and fill his own casks—almost always Spanish oak, ex-sherry casks— at these and other distilleries, and to mature his whiskies for much longer than was customary at the time. Today, Gordon & MacPhail now bottles over 350 different expressions from around 70 distilleries.

Glenlivet The origins of Glenlivet Distillery can be traced back to 1815 but it is well known that illicit distilling was going on long before then. In 1817 George Smith leased some land at Upper Drumin Farm, where he continued illicit distilling to supplement his crofters wage. During 1823 an Excise Act was pushed through by the Duke of Gordon—Smiths’s landlord—to stop illicit distilling. Gordon then persuaded Smith to take out the first license and he also helped to set up the distillery at Drumin. Due to the success of Glenlivet, a number of distilleries in the region appended the name Glenlivet to their own. In 1880 J.G. Smith took legal action and the court ruled that there was only one ‘The Glenlivet’.

Gordon & MacPhail

There has probably been whisky made on the Macallan site, a small hill overlooking the Spey near Craigellachie, since the late 1700’s. The first licensed distillation at Macallan is said to have taken place in the earliest days of legalized production, in 1824. The distillery changed hands several times throughout the 19th century and in 1894 was bought by Elgin merchant, Roderick Kemp (who also owned Talisker on Skye). Due to demand for Macallan the distillery has been modernized and extended over the years. In the 1950’s the output was trebled and further increased in the 1960’s. |

Highland Park Built in 1798, Scotland’s most Northern distillery is set on the site where the infamous illicit distiller, Magnus Eunson’s both used to stand. Highland Park continues to malt its own barley using the traditional floor malting method and to kiln dry the ‘green’ malt using peat cut from its own moorlands. Cattie Maggie is the underground spring that feeds a former quarry close to Highland Park. The spring and quarry are named after a tinker who lived in the vicinity. The water is pure and very hard, rising through a sedimentary rock of hard sandstone.

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon (94WE) {#160703} ................................................................27.99

I’m a Bourbon and American Whiskey fanatic. Michael Thomas our Spirits Buyer has done an amazing job at stocking some extremely hard to come by American Whiskey Rarities, however he has been a little remiss in letting them go. That’s why I’m stepping in, as an American Whiskey Fan I wanted to make sure that you knew of these great selections that we amassed. Some of you may have that my brother is deeply involved in sourcing out hard to come-by American Whiskey for the Inn at Blackberry Farm in Tennessee. Now he’s becoming a bit tight lipped these days but as I continue to pump him for information-I make sure to let Michael know what to be chasing down. The rewards have paid off and we have some of the highest rated and most sought after American Whiskey/Bourbon in-stock now and ready to ship! JN

Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Year Old Rum {#125683} ...........45.99 Wonderfully complex, generous and full-bodied, with a sweet honeyed viscosity atypical of an aged spirit; a great depth of raisined fruit and apricot preserves, building to an intense heart of savoury oak, nutmeg, leather and tobacco with notes of coffee and delicately sweet vanilla, balanced with a spicy touch of cinnamon and ginger on the pleasantly astringent finish; truly a rum for the discerning palate. Makers Notes.

Ultimate Tequila Luxury

From NYC:

DeLeon Premium tequila is made with 100 % Blue Weber Agave in the highlands of Purisima del Rincon, Guanajuato Mexico. This luxury spirit is certifiably the purest tequila on record as documented by the Tequila Regulatory Council based upon superior alcohol and methanol levels. The first in the world to be aged in premier Cru Sauternes barrels to complete the unique and distinctly DeLeon flavor profile. While the aging process and blend remains a guarded secret, the unmatched smoothness of DeLeon’s Reposado is celebrated by Tequila aficionados around the world. Salud!

Whistle Pig Farm Straight Rye Whiskey (96WE) {#352018} ................................................................75.00 “First, a warning: this is only for those who like their rye big and brawny. It starts off innocuously with a maple-syrup color, and a pretty, complexand subtle scent: honey, vanilla, a sight medicinal tinge and faint clovernotes. It feels silky on the tongue and at first, the flavors reflect caramel, burnt orange and a whisper of smoke, but then a mouth-warming wave of tannic bite sweeps over all and lingers for a good long time. Straight up or on the rocks...96.” WE 12/10.
