With its numerous lifestyle amenities and luxurious accommodations, The Bellevue Resort Bohol has more than enough reasons to entice a stay, away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
GOOD ESCAPE Three years ago, I started to skip Sinulog Sunday— wanting to be far from the city’s maddening crowd. Knowing how the celebration gets more rowdy with each passing year, I wanted to make a great escape for a quiet respite. And even though I would say “I’m going to Sinulog this year,” I’d still catch myself searching for places to go to during that stressful weekend. The first year I just stayed home, and the year after I was in Baguio, next it was Bantayan. Perhaps this year, I may find myself at the beautiful The Bellevue Resort Bohol—our cover this month—a property touted among the best vacation and event destinations in the country. Truthfully though, it’s difficult to keep away from the excitement of Sinulog, also especially since this issue, the biggest of Zee Lifestyle Directory, centers on this crowd-drawing festival. From the food stalls at Sugbo Mercado, the kakanin pasalubongs, to the parties—no one is too young or too old for Sinulog. No matter how Sinulog gets slammed with unfavorable media, one thing is for sure: there’s no stopping the spirit of the festival. Now, why try to escape a good thing like that?

CAMOTES, IT IS
Popular folklore narrates that while harvesting their root crops, local farmers were asked by the Spaniards that what was the name of the place, they replied “Camotes” (sweet potatoes) and the island was named such. by Janet Alfafara photography Steffen Billhardt
THE 5 KINDS OF NIGHTS IN CEBU Night life in Cebu doesn’t just mean having drinks and dancing all night long in a club. The Queen City has a plethora of options to suit every personality— whether you’re the board games and poetry type, or are more inclined to music and live entertainment. BOARD GAME NIGHTS Who said board games are for kids alone? In Cebu, board game cafes are sprouting up unknowingly making every night fun and nerdy. Dice Kong and Board Game Cafe, Vault Board Game Cafe
Lying east of mainland Cebu, Camotes is actually made up of the islands of Pacijan, Poro, Ponson and the islet of Tulang. Life on the islands is relaxed and far removed from the city’s urban bustle; its beaches are white and unspoiled, and everyone tarries and pretty much still works on Filipino time. Daily fastcraft trips leave promptly as scheduled from Pier 1 in Cebu City for the reasonably comfortable two-hour ride to Camotes’ main port in Poro. Alternatively, you can drive to the wharf of Danao City and take your car onto the ferryboat that will dock at the port of Consuelo in San Francisco on Pacijan Island, the better known island where the best beaches and more developed resorts are found. The islands can be explored in a day by hiring a multi-cab (a small jeepney) from either ports, with the driver being your guide. For short distances, go local and take their main mode of transportation, the habal-habal (a tandem-riding motorcycle) just as the islanders do. A worthwhile stop on Pacijan island is the tranquil 680-hectare Lake Danao. Developed and maintained as an ecotourism and educational facility by the local government, the Lake Danao Park is becoming a family favorite for picnics, boating, and bird watching. Wild ducks, purple herons and migratory birds flying overhead are common sights around the lake. A local delicacy available at the park kiosk is salvaro, a waferthin crispy crepe made of cassava flour that's lightly drizzled with coconut syrup. Growing abundant along the banks of the lake is a type of grass locally called soli-soli, which after being dried, are woven into mats, bags and hats and provide the townsfolk a cottage industry. The Soli-Soli Festival is a colorful and creative celebration
that revolves around the plant which gives locals a source of income. A string of underground caves dot the islands including the almost hidden Timubo Cave; its refreshingly cool waters provide drinking water for Sonog town. The Bukilat Cave in Tudela is given easy access by concrete steps leading down so visitors can dip in its shallow but icy cold waters, said to have healing properties. Natural light coming through the crevices above reveals interesting stalagmites and stalactites. Other caves in the area are the Paraiso, Holy Crystal and Guadalupe. City slickers may be itching to catch the next ferry out of rustic and languid Camotes, but to the discerning sun-worshippers the gorgeous beaches of Santiago Bay and Mangodlong with its sparkling turquoise waters, bleached-white sands and off-thegrid location, it's paradise found. While other resorts are crowded along the other side of Panglao Island, The Bellevue Resort Bohol is quietly tucked away in a sliver of secluded beach at the southwestern tip of Bohol, making it the perfect tropical sanctuary for those looking for privacy, tranquility, and comfort. Ably headed by their Managing Director John Dustin Chan, the resort stands for warm and dedicated

Sitting on a 7-hectare property, the lush resort is comprised of 159 rooms and suites with private balconies, each furnished to provide superior comfort and lavish conveniences for a worry-free stay. Couples on their honeymoon have the option to stay in the resort’s deluxe rooms or indulge in any of its luxurious suites. The elegantly appointed Bellevue Suites has king beds and outdoor jacuzzis, ideal for that intimate and romantic rendezvous. With Bohol fast becoming a major tourist spot and a new international airport soon to rise on the island, tourist arrival figures are
expected to grow further. Since its opening in 2012, The Bellevue Resort Bohol is one of the region’s favorite event destinations, where dream weddings can become a reality. This deluxe resort in itself marries all the components needed to make celebrations even more special—beauty, serenity, comfort and privacy, among others. Many loving couples have made their lifetime wedding vows under the canopy of clear blue skies with a panoramic view of cerulean waters as waves gently splash on the Doljo shores. Complementing the natural breathtaking sights of Bohol are the superb dining offerings prepared by the talented culinary team of The Bellevue Resort Bohol. At nightfall, guests may enjoy an exclusive dinner buffet under a sea of
stars at the resort’s al fresco dining outlets that offer a vast selection of fine wines. The Bellevue Resort Bohol also promises a new brand of luxury for those looking to have a staycation. As Bohol's tourism landscape slowly changes—tourist arrivals for the province hit its 1-millionth mark in 2017—visitors have grown to love this quiet tropical paradise. Despite calamities and some security threats in the past, the island continues to draw in foreign and local visitors alike who have embraced the province’s tourism campaign, “Behold Bohol.”

SINULOG SAVVY
The weekend isn’t just about the floats, dancing, parties and the crowd—beyond that is a colorful institution that celebrates the province’s acceptance of the Catholic faith and its unwavering devotion to the Sr. Santo Niño. by Ansylle Mae Bontuyan
WHAT’S IN THE BAG?
HISTORY
“One Beat. One Dance. One Vision.” This theme has continuously defined the grandiose Sinulog celebration that attracts revelers every year. A festival that can be traced back to a rich history, Sinulog has always been identified with the Queen City—linking us with our pagan past and our Christian present. At the time when our ancestors worshipped wooden idols and anitos, Sinulog was already a dance ritual honoring these elements. Upon the arrival in 1521 of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who introduced Christianity to the country, he presented the Santo Niño image as a baptismal gift to Cebu’s ruler Rajah Humabon and his wife, Hara Amihan. Subsequently, the natives were converted to Christianity and started offering dances but this time in reverence to the Child Jesus.
The term Sinulog comes from the Cebuano word “sulog” which means “water current movement”. The rhythmically forward-backward dance steps of Santo Niño devotees during the Sinulog Grand Parade is said to resemble the movement of currents of water. Cebu’s first Sinulog parade took place in 1980, and the festival has now been institutionalized, making it an annual event. Today, Sinulog is one of the grandest, most colorful and best-known festivals in the country. A cultural-religious celebration that lasts for nine days, it involves solemn activities widely participated in by Cebuanos whose deep faith in the Holy Child go beyond boundaries. The massive preparation and warm welcome put up by the locals for the upcoming Sinulog festival truly proves their strong devotion to the Santo Niño who has greatly influenced the lives of the Cebuano people.
SURVIVING SINULOG We tend to lose ourselves in the peak of the celebration and forget about the little things that might actually matter. For a fun-filled and worry-free Sinulog, here are tips to help you get through the Sinulog day. PLAN YOUR DAY AHEAD A little spontaneity won’t hurt but it is always much better to think ahead about the places you’d like to visit during. Journey with a plan so you’d enjoy the celebration to the fullest. BE A “FRONTPACKER” Always put your bags in front of you for extra security. When you are in between a huge crowd, it’s always better to be mindful of your belongings. You never know who among the people surrounding you are pickpockets and who are not.
6
NAVIGATE YOUR WAY THROUGH Check areas where you can possibly do a smooth escape once the crowd thickens. Observe and plot out your exit points so you can avoid a stampede and go home safely. CONTROL YOUR ALCOHOL. Drink moderately, or so what a famous commercial says. It’s absolutely alright to loosen up yourselves with some drinks together with your friends. But, do manage your alcohol so you will be sane enough to go home or go somewhere you can rest comfortably. DESIGNATE MEETUP PLACES. It’s unavoidable to be separated with your friends in the crowd. It’s best to plan out places where you can meet up should you get lost in the sea of people. It’ll be hard to communicate since the signal tends to be quite inconsistent at times like this. Better be prepared!

In the midst of the Sinulog Festival on the third Sunday of January, we sure would like to keep up with what's happening at the country’s biggest street party. But there are some essentials that come before anything else. Zee Lifestyle Directory shares the seven items that you definitely need to check off from your list before you leave home to join the Sinulog revelry. MONEY Never leave your house with an empty pocket. It will help you survive all the way through—be it for a hungry stomach or a ride home. A couple of drinks won’t be bad too. CELLPHONE Since cellular networks’ signals are expected to be shut down during the festival, your cellphone won't be of use. But you’ll need it for taking photos and capturing moments. Take as much as you want and post them later when you get a good signal. POWERBANKS The lifeline of your cellphone. Expect coffee shops to be extremely full so it will be hard to find an available outlet to charge your phone in case it runs out of power. WET WIPES Every street you pass by will be like a paintball arena, so don’t expect to come out clean. Better have some wet wipes handy to clean off smudges of paint from your face so you’ll be easily recognized by your friends. EXTRA SHIRT By the end of the festivity, it’s always better to come home looking clean. Apart from possible lectures about cleanliness, hailing a ride is much easier when you don’t look like someone who’s going to stain the car upholstery. WATER Keep yourself hydrated. It will be an endless adventure of walks in a tight crowd under the heat of the sun. ZIP LOCK BAGS Looks uncool but it's practical. You might want to provide additional protection for your valuables in case your street adventure leaves you soaking wet.

NIGHTWALK FROM DOWNTOWN TO MIDTOWN As someone who loves city walks and streets, I suggest that one should try a nightwalk from downtown all the way to the midtown streets of the city.
SINULOG AT THE GRANDSTAND Staying at the Grandstand on Sinulog Day is another dimension of the festival that should be experienced. It is only at the Grandstand where dancing contingents get to perform their entire five-minute “ritual presentation.” Purchase your tickets at the Cebu City Sports Center along Jones Avenue, Cebu City. Tickets ranges from Php 1,000 to Php 2,500
NOVENA MASS AT THE BASILICA I suggest people attend the earliest Mass Novena schedule because the crowd is still manageable. I feel it's a great way to start the day with God. I need my daily dose of positivity and enlightenment from the Holy Child. Novena masses start from January 11 to January 21. Masses schedule starts from 4am to 8:30pm

Cebu is a chaotic place when the Sinulog season rolls in as the city gets crowded with throngs of people who come to celebrate. Take yourself far away from the hustle and bustle by visiting these places recommended by Cebuanos. SOFIA OLAVIDES, virtual assistant The Clove on the Quay. CIAIRHA MONSANTO, student nurse Balamban. Why choose to be surrounded with numerous people in the city’s busy streets when you can be surrounded by trees and enjoy serenity? If you’re tired of walking in the streets, a literal breath of fresh air would be great. For a quick scenic view of the city, go to West 32 or book a refreshing overnight stay. It’s the perfect time to go up to the mountains while everyone else is rushing down to the city. ALPHONZO ALEGRADO, filmmaker Dao Falls. I’d have to recommend Dao Falls in Samboan. It’s a little over two
hours outside the city, towards the southwest tip of the island. You first hike through the hillside, snaking between palm trees until you get to a forested area. From there, it’s a fun trek that involves a bamboo bridge, a small pathway by the creek, and wading through the cold turquoise water before you reach the falls. Samboan, Cebu ELISHA TABAQUE, writer Museum hopping. As known to many, the Sinulog is a festival in devotion to the Sto. Nino. Given that, it would be perfect to visit museums and see how this came through. Be struck by waves of nostalgia as the storied past of the city is showcased at the different museums in Cebu.
SHARI SAYS HI by Shari Quimbo @sharinuh Matias BBQ
FOOD FAVORITES Zee Lifestyle editor Shari Quimbo talks about the local restaurants she’s enjoyed in the past, present and likely in the future.
Cebuanos can be sentimental about their palates. A lot of homegrown restaurants that opened decades ago are still standing, because their dishes have been so ingrained in the local gastronomic consciousness that people crave them on a regular basis. It’s certainly true for me—I have many childhood memories attached to certain dishes. The 12 years I lived in Manila involved many late night cravings for some steamed rice or chicken crackers, and more than a few lechons flown in via air cargo. Of course, the last few years have seen an emergence of new restaurants and an introduction of different cuisines in the city. Cebuanos have certainly
gotten a lot more adventurous in terms of their dining preferences, but some restaurants just have a special place in our hearts. Here are some that are cemented into mine. MATIAS BBQ Growing up, we lived along AS Fortuna (way before it became the bustling commercial street it is now, and I distinctly remember when Matias BBQ opened. There had been a more popular BBQ spot just right next door, but Matias’ saucy Pa-a or grilled chicken leg was hard to resist—and a lot of people agreed. These days, the rustic eatery gets packed for lunch and dinner, with best-sellers like the Balbacua (ox skin and tail stew) selling out early. As for me, I’ll always have the Pa-a, with several pieces of puso, of course. SUNBURST FRIED CHICKEN Even my parents have memories of eating at Sunburst growing up—that’s just how much it’s integrated into
Dimsum Break
Sunburst Fried
Chicken
Cebuano food history. The Fried Chicken is something you should definitely try (I prefer the drumsticks because I think they have more flavor, but a lot of people prefer the ribkeel because they’re bigger), and my grandmother swears the coleslaw is the best she’s ever tried. The real star of Sunburst, though, is the Chicken Crackers, chicken skin in seasoned coating, then deep-fried. It’s supposed to be an appetizer, but I prefer it dipped in vinegar and eaten with rice—it’s not the healthiest dish out there, but it certainly is hearty. HARBOUR CITY This restaurant has several iterations—Ding Qua Qua, Dimsum Break, Ding How. Wherever I choose to dine at, though, the steamed fried rice and quail egg siomai is my go-to food pairing. Sure, they’ve come up with some amazing new dishes through the years (the Salted Egg Fried Chicken, for one, was just bursting with flavor), but it’s these staples that I look forward to eating even after all this time.
