Trick and Treat To be really honest—I’m not entirely a fan of Halloween. As a kid, I grew up hating scary things. It may seem weird but sometimes I still imagine faces forming from things I see subconsciously. Well, that’s the ‘trick’ part that I’ve grown resigned to. But reading through the stories in this month’s directory has inspired me to view Halloween in a different way—and the best is seeing the flip side—that is, look at the ‘treat’ angle of it. Giving us a wonderful treat for this issue is Maria Elena whose beauty exceeds way beyond as we shoot her in the glorious glasshouse of Montebello. Another treat is the list we’ve prepared that notes our favorite places where you can get the best chocolate treats in the city. A bonus treat comes from the fluffy canine of Zee Directory’s former editor Patty Taboada, whose four-legged baby, Gryffin the Chow shares his fave pet-friendly spots in town. Halloween has never been this meaningful to me before. Perhaps the ultimate treat that this time brings as the weather begins to change and days become cooler—it signals that Christmas is on its way. I can’t wait! @carlotherivera

ON THE SPOT

HOMETOWN HIGHLIGHTS

The island of Cebu has not only dozens but hundreds of beautiful spots scattered along along its entire stretch. This month, Zee Lifestyle Directory picks up photos that showcase why Cebu is called the Queen City.

We ask a Cebuana about her favorite places on the island and why they’re considered the best. Check out what this local has to say, whether the choices are obvious or refreshing ones that are off the beaten path. FAVE RESTAURANT IN CEBU Bicester Cafe. My go-to place for brunch where I can also have a cocktail anytime of the day. Generous servings, reasonably priced, instagrammable food presentation tastes as good as it looks. FAVE PLACE OR SPOT IN CEBU Q Farm in Cantipla, Transcentral Highway. The whole experience of getting to the farm is a sight to remember. It’s one of the most scenic places to ride at where you see bouldersized rocks, and an awe-inspiring view of the mountains. For non cyclists, the farm offers horseback riding that takes you to the least explored parts of Cebu. HAPPY HOUR DESTINATION Baguio Craft Brewery Cebu. They’re new in town and they have the widest selection of craft beer. It’s one of the few bike-friendly places in Cebu that’s perfect for solitary drinking or with friends.

MUST-VISIT ATTRACTION Tops Skyline Garden. I bike there every afternoon and it has an eagle eye’s view of Cebu City. It’s not just about the city lights but the absence of man-made noise. MUST-TRY DISH Farooj Chicken from Balai By Cafe Plus. They have chicken all you can every Tuesday. Farooj Chicken has a different twist from a classic lechon manok with the use of Middle Eastern spices. Their 4 sauces make it more flavorful. It’s like a party in my palette. Everything is baked fresh daily, and their chocolate truffles are to die-for. Paseo Saturnino, Cebu City The Chocolate Chamber Who wouldn’t be interested with its name upon hearing it. This cafe elevates the local table beyond the

usual sikwate concept. Sourcing the chocolate from local farmers, The Chocolate Chamber offers rich and delectable chocolate treats in ways you haven’t tried before. Sarrosa International Hotel, F. Ramos St., Cebu City

SHARI SAYS HI by Shari Quimbo @sharinuh

A-Ukay!

Zee Lifestyle editor Shari Quimbo ponders on the joy of bargain shopping, and some tips on how to survive thrifting excursions of your own. As much as I am in love with the window displays of Zara, there’s a different kind of joy that comes with bargain shopping. It’s not just about getting clothes for cheap—with fast fashion making everyone carbon copies of the other, there’s a thrill that comes with finding a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece (and even more when it comes at a fraction of the price you’re willing to spend). Downtown is the best place to shop on Sundays, where the sidewalks are lined with people selling all sorts of clothing. On recent trips, I’ve scored a bright red cotton kimono, a green and pink printed muumuu, an 80s-inspired polka dot shirt

4

dress, and a bunch of other pieces that I constantly get compliments on. The secret, I think, is understanding your sense of style before braving the bargain world. Once you know what you want and what goes well with the rest of your closet, you’ll get better at finding the pieces that are meant for you. That, and a few other things we’ve listed here to help you with your ukay-ukay experience: 1. Dress down. Don’t hit the streets in a dress you’d wear to a party. A plain shirt and denim shorts go a long way in helping out your negotiation skills. 2. When it comes to going through the racks, I take

my cue from Nasty Gal founder and Girlboss Sophia Amoruso—she says to run your hand through the clothes until you find a fabric that appeals to you. No matter how nice the pattern or the shape is, if it’s in an uncomfortable fabric, you’re never going to wear it. 3. The same goes for patterns—spot the colors and prints you like among the pile, and zero in. That way you don’t have to spend all that time going through the entire inventory. 4. Check for stains and examine the seams. Make sure any discoloration or spots can be removed with the right techniques. Also, carefully stitched hems are an easy way to recognize if you’re getting a good deal. 5. Base your haggling on how much you want something. If it’s a piece you can live without, go ahead and try to get the price as low as you can go—be prepared to say you’re going to walk away and mean it. When it’s a dress that you’re madly in love with though, go ahead and pay a little more. Let’s be real, it’s probably a good bargain already. 6. Go high-low when it comes to styling. As tempting as it is to excitedly wear your thrifting finds altogether, it’s important to bring in some luxe elements to your outfit. Pair your P100 floral dress with a designer leather bag handed down from your mother, or wear the printed pants from Colon with a crisp high street button-down. It’s about finding the right balance, and letting your personal style shine. Remember, it’s not about the piece—it’s how the pieces come together to represent you.

For the Love of Oslob Oslob can’t make it to the Cebu’s map of tourist destination if not because of its must-visit places. From its historical places to its immaculate beaches, there’s a reason why people are screaming love for this little quaint town Oslob. by Carlo Rivera

1. If you’re obsessed with history and culture, then you’d be right on track with a stroll around their Municipal Heritage Park. Take an instagrammable photo inside the ruins of Cuartel, the old barracks of the Spanish civil guards built in 1879. The beautifully structured Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepcion and the Baluarte show the town’s glorious past. Municipal Heritage Park, Oslob 2. The sea is always calling, and in the coastal town of Oslob it beckons. Just a little offshore from the mainland is the coral island of Sumilon, the best place for diving, snorkeling or simply just sunbathing. The shifting sandbar and turquoise waters draw many visitors to this beautiful island. Bluewater Sumilon Island, (032) 3189098 or sumilon@bluewater.com.ph

How to Get There: 3. When in Oslob, one must experience swimming with the whale sharks. This quiet town has become known for their whale shark tours. An orientation conducted by the local government is a prerequisite before embarking on the guided underwater adventure. And during your

Go to South Bus Terminal, then hop on an Oslob-bound bus. One can choose between non-aircon or aircon bus. Travel time is approximately 3 hours. We recommend to take the earliest trip at 4:30am to avoid the traffic in the city so you can immediately visit the whale sharks by early morning. Cebu South Bus Terminal, N. Kicking off a major plan to expand and upgrade its facilities, the city’s only garden hotel has introduced awesome changes with the opening of its new events venue. glass panels offer a refreshing sight of the surrounding greenery which gives the space a relaxing ambiance. An events pavilion with an unobstructed view of the hotel’s sprawling lawn and its landscaped tropical gardens, it is a modern structure that marries minimalism and elegance. Tucked away from the road, The Glass House proudly sits beside the pond and looks out towards Montebello’s picturesque landmark, the Bridge of Love.

With its perfect proportion and simplicity, The Glass House is an outdoor venue designed specially for memorable events in the city. Montebello Villa Hotel Gov. M. Cuenco Avenue, Banilad, Cebu City (032) 231-3681 Montebello Villa Hotel

The Fashion House of Maria Elena It seems only natural for Maria Elena to eventually find herself opening up her own fashion house. Now she finds that it's more than what she actually expected it to be. by Hazel Macuto photography Joseph Clifford sittings editor Carlo Rivera hair and makeup Jessie Glova locale The Glass House of Montebello Villa Hotel

It’s quite interesting to talk about Maria Elena, especially since she has graced the cover of Zee Lifestyle Directory twice already. And that makes it all the more easy for us to work with her. As we were busy getting ready for this photoshoot, here she comes—gracefully striding into the hotel with her trademark high-heeled sandals and signature red lipstick. For those who know her, behind that feminine charm and look of fragility is someone

6

with unspoken strength and grit. No stranger to the glamorous fashion world, she’s a known ramp model who has fiercely walked on several runways and has landed on the pages of glossy magazines. Today, she has laid low in her modeling stints since the launching of her own fashion house five years ago. According to Maria Elena, she was in the garment business prior

See more stories at www.zeelifestylecebu.com

to opening her own boutique, so shifting to bespoke clothing came quite smoothly for her and seemed like a natural progression. Her background in fashion has helped her a great deal in knowing about the up and coming styles, and even including the creative process that comes together in making a piece of clothing. She agrees that fashion is dictated by trends, but

she follows her own style. For her, it is dressing according to one’s mood and matching the pieces that create a statement of how a woman feels. Under her poised and confident aura is an alluring humility which showed when she bashfully said she doesn’t have the right to give a message to aspiring fashion designers. But if she has to, it would be “Always love your work and value the people who work for you because you cannot do this business alone.” When it comes to business and life in general, she has learned not to compete and to accept that she cannot please everybody. She discloses that actor Anthony Hopkins’ words about not minding other people’s perception of you has somehow influenced her— by not letting people’s negativity get to her and be driven only by passion. Expecting nothing,

accepting everything and being empowered by family and friends are her secrets to making her life easier and blessed, she shares. Perhaps following that sound advice is the reason why The Fashion House of Maria Elena has flourished. Being a complete product of experience and perseverance, it is home to a woman’s complete wardrobe. Featuring a collection that includes casual outfits, little black dresses, wedding gowns down to accessories, and haute couture—it’s a house of pure fashion. Her creations fit well into the most elegant gala wear, with delicate detailing and silhouettes that are simple and sexy but still glamorous. Using her past profession as a model has helped as a guide for her designs, giving her the awareness of how clothes move with the body. Of course, she counts comfort as an

important factor in a good design. Now that her fashion house has been running for five years, Maria Elena looks with excitement for the coming years ahead. Vowing to devote her zeal and energy in sharing the wonders of fashion, she intends to expand the business of producing stylish creations for her growing line of customers. Seeing how she carries herself with confidence and her love for fashion, coupled with knowing how she has no fears or limits in reaching her dreams, Maria Elena will undoubtedly make an indelible mark in Cebu’s fashion industry.
