BEAUTY FULL If there’s one thing I love with this issue’s editorial line up, it is how every single page is revved up with beauty. We have the cute spots for #OOTD, the stylish comfort rooms in the city’s restaurants, sights of the alluring Aloguinsan, and on the cover, a celebrant of beauty herself, Reese Borromeo of Beauty Affair who makes it a philosophy to look good. Admittedly, it took me time before I realized how there’s an ongoing monomania to looking good. Being enclosed with people working to stay in shape and enraptured to dress up made me want to be elevated and counted as one who keeps up with the trends. But beyond the cover ups of refinement, I stay true to what real beauty is, as the Little Prince expounds—it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Stylish Restaurant Comfort Rooms in Cebu

The island of Cebu has not only dozens but hundreds of beautiful spots scattered along its entire stretch. This month, Zee Lifestyle Directory picks up photos that showcase why Cebu is called the Queen City.

Sur-Fries!

We know it’s probably not the healthiest dish out there, but it’s hard to resist a plate of fries, whether as a complement to a meal or eaten on its own as a snack. There are so many ways to enjoy them, and restaurants all around the city are coming up with their own versions. 11. Birdseed Breakfast Club + Cafe If you’re dining at this restaurant, you must try their Truffle Bacon Fat Fries—yes, it tastes exactly as good as it sounds. With the right amount of richness from the truffle oil and bacon fat, it is seasoned with parmesan cheese for a nice, salty finish. Axis Entertainment Avenue 12. Weekend Since it opened this summer, Weekend’s kitchen has come up with some of the best dishes in the city, and their Thick Fries are no exception. The slices are twice-fried to a beautiful golden brown shade and seasoned with Grana Padano cheese, truffle oil and smoked Himalayan salt—truly an explosion of flavor in every bite. The Greenery

SPECIAL MENTION: Potato Corner There’s a reason why there are Potato Corner stalls everywhere in the city—the combination of deepfried fries and a selection of powder seasonings is the perfect choice for a snack. Our suggestion: order a half-and-half of Sour Cream and Barbecue for a spicy-sweet-sour flavor combo.

Sights of Aloguinsan This little town in the south of Cebu offers sights to behold by Carlo Rivera photography Steffen Billhardt

HOMETOWN HIGHLIGHTS

We ask a Cebuano about his favorite places on the island and why they’re considered the best. Check out what this local has to say, whether his choices are obvious or refreshing ones that are off the beaten path.

Jesse Jake Daan fashion blogger

FAVE RESTAURANT IN CEBU What was known as a quiet town in the south of Cebu has been creating ripples of noise in the province’s tourism landscape. The unassuming Aloguinsan has a laid-back vibe and offers a wonderful feeling of peace and serenity that’s hard to resist. Located on the island’s southwest, Aloguinsan is three hours away from Cebu City. A long and winding drive leads to this little-known paradise that holds some of nature’s gifts that are truly sights to behold. A good place to start your visit would be the Bojo River Nature Reserve, an ecotourism site which features the 1.4 kilometer river and its environs. It is home to 61 bird species and 22 species of mangroves. The local fishermen have organized themselves into the Bojo Aloguinsan Ecotourism Association (BAETAS) which responsibly manages

the 45-minute river cruise much to the delight of its visitors. A short orientation first takes place, followed by a traditional send-off ritual for a safe journey before they paddle downstream. Drawing many local and foreign visitors, the tranquil Bojo River is a natural wonder. It opens out to the Tañon Strait where rich and colorful corals can be found below. Tourists can take a glass-bottom boat or snorkel around its cool clear waters. Aloguinsan is also known for Hermit’s Cove, a secluded cove where a hermit once lived and where unexplained mysteries were happening, as folktales narrate. Its immaculate beach, white sands and peaceful surroundings are ideal for basking under the sun and communing with nature. Beyond these spots, there’s so much more to charming Aloguinsan that you can discover.

Tavolata! I just love how each dish on their menu has its own distinct flavor. You won’t find it elsewhere in Cebu, if not, in the Philippines.

FAVE PLACE IN CEBU That would definitely be Bantayan Island. I love how you can enjoy its beautiful beaches for free and bike around the island even if you’re dripping wet from swimming. The food there is affordable and good as well. Photo by Steffen Billhardt

HAPPY HOUR DESTINATION Tops. It’s cool and breezy and gives a view of the entire city. Enjoy all that with a bottle of beer plus good chit chat.

MUST-VISIT ATTRACTION Canyoneering because you get to experience the adrenaline, beauty, and serenity of nature all in one adventure.

MUST-TRY DISH Movenpick’s Veal Tenderloin Jardiniere. One bite and I was craving for more. The meat was cooked just right—tender and juicy, with a hint of vanilla. Yes, vanilla, it was amazing! ( All photos except Bantayan are from the wires)

Beauty Affair FACE and Slimming Hub

While staying true to inner beauty and its value, Reese Borromeo and her Beauty Affair Face and Slimming Hub delivers it inside and out.

by Hazel Macuto sittings editor Carlo Rivera photography Jesse Jake Daan hair and makeup Carlos Conde and Bobbie Albert production assistant Paul Yu

In this day and age where aesthetics matter, beauty and wellness are earnestly sought after. The need to be in top shape is always the goal nowadays. And achieving this beauty transformation comes easy at the Beauty Affair Face and Slimming Hub. The aspiration to always look good is what prompted Therese Marie Borromeo to open her own clinic and share beauty and wellness with everybody. Reese, as she is fondly called, saw potential in the competitive but growing beauty and wellness industry. Young and passionate as she is, the former sales executive built the business bound by the guiding philosophy that real beauty is real people. Images of attractive personalities plastered across the city catch our attention everyday. We’ve all heard of how many people have gone through great and painful lengths in their pursuit of beauty. Since beauty treatments have generally been expensive with all the products and machines that are being used, having to shell out hundreds of thousands to enhance different parts of the body seems to be the norm—but not at Reese’s Beauty Affair. Beauty packages for all their services won’t hurt the

wallet, and for those with long-term beauty goals, there are the 10+5 package offers. Their services include facials for different skin types, laser treatments for acne, whitening treatments, face and body contouring and hair removal procedures among others. Painless slimming services like body muscle toning and non-invasive lip cavitation are also available. Since it opened early last year, it already has established a long string of loyal customers. “Our ever-evolving line up of services and procedures paired up with reasonable pricing and timely promotions keep us present in the minds of our clients,” says Reese. “What’s more important is our consistent approach to always treat guests like our very own family and friends.” To fully enjoy the whole experience, the beauty clinic’s interiors are fashioned to calm, soothe, and relax their customers. Painted in white and lavender with classic furniture and fixtures, the hub’s design was truly well thought of. Creating opportunities for other beauty enthusiasts is also one of Reese’s goals; thus, she created the

“Beauty Technologies Solution,” a package offered for anyone who is interested to start their own beauty clinic. Reese’s idea of beauty comes with her ultimate beauty formula: a lifestyle change and the choice to stay committed to it everyday is what will only bring you results. With that strong inclination to beauty, this young and driven entrepreneur may be the game changer in Cebu’s beauty and wellness world.

Sushi Says

Ooma

Sushisake

Azabu

In pursuit of the best Japanese restaurants in Cebu—and one to try when you’re in Manila

CEBU-MANDAUE-MACTAN MAP

I am the kind of person who will always be in the mood for sushi, which is ironic because when I was younger, I could not stand the thought of raw fish. These days, I rarely come across a maki I don’t like—in fact, I too often fall in love with sushi rolls that I’ve sampled. Thankfully, I live in a city that celebrates Japanese cuisine. There are even eateries that offer their own take on sushi rolls—Joed’s Lutong Hapon in Mabolo and APM Centrale is the perfect place to visit when you’re looking for hearty Japanese dishes on a budget.

6

When I’m hankering for something a bit more authentic though, I head to Azabu at JY Square and Robinsons Galleria. They have an extensive offering of sashimi and sushi, and even offer up some toro for those looking to really indulge (the delectable Japanese tuna is priced upwards of P1,500). The Spider Roll, with its crab claw and fish roe, is a go-to, paired with a serving of soba. Another spot that just recently opened is Sushisake at the Radisson Blu Cebu, which features some of the most delicious rolls I’ve tried in the city. Chef Jeff Yalung creates incredible flavor with his

sauces—you hardly even need the Kikkoman and wasabi for his creations. Although sushi should be relatively simple, the way some chefs bring these fresh ingredients together can create the most interesting flavor profiles. A recent visit to Manila introduced me to Ooma, where I made the best decision of myself and ordered the Soft Shell Taco-Maki. The “taco” is made from temaki, and packed with soft-shell crab, ebiko and aligue mayo. The flavor is incredible, and I’m planning a trip to the capital soon just so I can have another go.

Food Favorites from BE Grand Resort

BE Grand Resort in Panglao, Bohol redefines its restaurant’s offerings with the introduction of the familiar taste of comfort food by Carlo Rivera

Zee Lifestyle returns to Bohol a year after we applauded the Bohol Break event. This time we made a comeback to savor the newly launched menu of The Asian Bistro at The Food Hall. Our culinary adventure took place one manic Monday afternoon when we sampled BE Grand Resort’s innovative take on comfort food, the familiar taste that’s close to our hearts. The resort’s Executive Chef Mike and Sous Chef Clifford prepared traditional Asian favorites but served them with a surprising and delectable twist. The standout for me is their Mango Kani, a refreshing salad with a vibrant mix of garden greens,

fresh mango cubes, shredded crab sticks and shrimp. With roasted sesame and a light drizzle of Japanesemayo dressing, this was the perfect start-up appetizer. Ngohiong, a Chinese favorite was also on the menu and BE Bohol’s version was made of chunks of pork marinated in five spice, wrapped with bean curd sheets then deep-fried to crispy perfection. A houseblend dipping sauce makes the best complement. Similar to tinola, Chicken Binakol is chicken sautéed in ginger, then simmered in fresh coconut water with fresh young coconut meat and papaya with the added flavor of lemongrass and native chili leaves. And yes, it’s served in a coconut shell.

CoWorking Spaces in Cebu You Have to Hustle

With the rise of coworking spaces in the city, working outside of the office and home is easier. Beating deadlines becomes a less daunting task—and making new friends is a guarantee. And of course, grabbing a good old cup of joe is a given. by Gia Mayola

Workplace Cafe

14

Workplace Cafe positions itself as a good working space with a great coffee shop experience. Its ambiance resembles that of a typical cafe but with relaxing hues and ample lighting for everybody’s convenience. F. Ramos Street, Cebu City

15

Industriroom The in.dus.tri.Room is a favorite new study hangout for students for its good combina-

tion of being both a study lounge and a coworking space. With its modern look and thoughtful amenities, when you’re on the path to accomplishing your goals, this set-up can certainly help. Urgello St., Cebu City

16 A Space A SPACE truly believes in community and addresses the need for a venue for startups and creative thinkers to get together and do some work. Their working spaces unchain one from a traditional cubicle and instead bring you to an open space to shine and mingle with others. Crossroads Mall, Banilad, Cebu City

With seafood as a staple on the island of Bohol, the Bohol Seafood Bouillabaisse boasts of the fishermen’s freshest catch of the day—crabs, shrimp and squid sautéed in peanut butter are then cooked over low heat and topped with vegetables fresh from the resort’s organic garden. The flavorful stew is brought to the table with the Chef’s homemade shrimp paste on the side. As expected, everything is grand at the BE Grand Resort including their icy desserts. Suitably named, their signature BE Grand Halo-halo can be customized— choose from an assortment of preserved fruits, including ube jam and caramel, then top it off with a hefty scoop of your favorite ice cream. As a showcase of the island’s drawing power to bring in more tourists, BE Grand Resort’s new menu offerings confirm that Bohol is a destination where you can enjoy both great food and the wonders of nature.
