PREFACE
diving into the multiverse of digital architecture There are numerous of alternative softwares can be found in the Digital World of Architecture. In order to perform well in both academic and professional industry, an architect must muster the use of digital software in order to communicate design efficiently and effectively across various partiest such as clients, contractors, engineers, technicians as well as the local authorities. As each and every software are nade to specialized in certain functons. By understanding and experiencing various softwares we are able to compare the perks and drawbacks between these software, and ultimately discover a software that is most suitable tool for one individual.

2 WHAT IS ARCHICAD? ARCHICAD is a software tool for architects working in the architecture-engineering-construction (AEC) industry for designing buildings from the conceptual phase all through to the construction phase.
DEVELOPER : GRAPHISOFT
The interface of ArchiCAD v1 on Apple Macintosh
It is developed by the Hungarian company named Graphisoft. Development of ARCHICAD started in 1982 for the original Apple Macintosh. Following its launch in 1987, with Graphisoft's "Virtual Building" concept, ARCHICAD became regarded by some as the first implementation of BIM. ARCHICAD has been recognized as the first CAD product on a personal computer able to create both 2D and 3D geometry, as well as the first commercial BIM product for personal computers and considered "revolutionary" for the ability to store large amounts of information within the 3D model. Today, it has over 120,000 users.

by Eunice Lim Min Yee
The architectural part of the project was carried out by the Pride Company. The main tools for the Design Development and Construction Documentation phases were Archicad and Rhinoceros/Grasshopper. Despite the complexity of the facility, thanks to Archicad, the company managed to complete the project without hiring additional employees or BIM specialists. General BIM coordination of all disciplines and the workflow management during the DD and CD phases was carried out by a single architect. His tasks included the organization of teamwork in a single common shared project file. This entire process was based on the Archicad Teamwork feature.

BUILT-IN RENDERING
07.
by Shee Chean Xiang
Archicad has comes with 3 rendering mode which is built-in rendering engines. There are CineRender that is commonly used, Basic Rendering Engine and Sketch Rendering Engine. CineRender: This renderer is based on Maxon Cinema 4D version R18 and incorporates most of the parameters of the Cinema4D renderer. Basic Rendering Engine: The Basic Engine (whose settings are analogous to the OpenGL engine) is suitable for producing draft-quality or simple renderings offering textured image surfaces, simple shadows and transparencies. Sketch: This produces non-photorealistic renderings that replicate sketched lines - best suited for draft views in the early project stages.
CineRender This renderer is based on Maxon Cinema 4D version R18 and incorporates most of the parameters of the Cinema4D renderer. This engine enables you to create very high-quality, highly realistic images, with more exact texture and light reproduction than the other engines.

Render Settings (Basic) Panel Quality The two quality pop-ups refer to the Rendering Quality and Shadow Quality of your rendering. •Rendering Quality: The first pop-up sets Rendering quality. Choose Low, Medium, High or Final (Details). (The quality you set here will have an effect on the antialiasing and Global Illumination processes, which produce better quality but require more render time.) •Shadows: The second pop-up sets Shadow quality. (Varies depending on whether you are using a Standard or Physical Renderer.) CineRender Basic Settings: Environment Panel Use this panel to set your rendering into a particular environment: using an option sky backdrop, plus weather, time and location settings. Sky Setup: From this popup, choose None, HDRI Sky, or Physical Sky. The most common setting is Physical Sky. CineRender Basic Settings: Background Panel This panel of PhotoRendering Settings is identical for all PhotoRendering engines. A Background is a plain 2D picture that is placed “behind” the rendering. (You can use it to place the 3D model into a context.)

Basic Render The Basic Engine (whose settings are analogous to the OpenGL engine) is suitable for producing draft-quality or simple renderings offering textured image surfaces, simple shadows and transparencies.
7
Basic Rendering Engine Effects Panel Use these controls to select the PhotoRendering effects you want to use: Method The Method setting determines how closely the program should adhere to its ultimate imaging capacity. •Best: The program calculates the light attributes of each pixel. As the choices decrease in quality, ARCHICAD calculates individual values for every second or third pixel only. The quality increase will affect curved surfaces more than others. •Using multiple light sources or picture mapping may require the Final or Best settings. •Flat Shading: Results in each shape being roughly approximated by flat surfaces only. Special effects like Transparency, Fog, Emission, Smooth Surfaces, Highlights and Light Decay are unavailable. The Flat Shading option is faster than all the other options in this dialog box, but slower than when the 3D Style uses Shaded mode. Basic Rendering Engine Brightness Panel This panel of the dialog box gives you choices regarding exposure. Use the dimmer switch to set the desired brightness from dark to bright. You have three options for correcting possible Overexposures. (Overexposure occurs when the computational method results in a brighter color requirement than the brightest white on the monitor.)
shee chean xiang | 1001747174
The Sketch engine produces non-photorealistic renderings that replicate sketched lines - best suited for draft views in the early project stages, using different free-hand effects. These effects include felt tip, pencil, graphite and marker.
BUILT-IN RENDERING
1 Sketch Render
7
Sketch Basic Settings Panel The Sketch Rendering Engine provides a number of factory scenes with preset parameter values. If you override these factory settings, the scene will be renamed Custom. Line Styles: Each linetype is represented by a dedicated folder with a set of bitmap images. These sets can be extended with similar scans of scripts using any graphic device. Sketch Enhancements Panel Antialiasing: Smooths the lines by picking longer lines from the scans than necessary. Air perspective: Similarly to the Fog effect, fades lines further to the viewpoint. Paper roughness can simulate the effects of bumps on scans of real “rough paper. Sketch Line Settings Panel Thickness: Use a low value to replicate thinner devices (pencil, fine marker). Large values are appropriate for displaying the textures of brush or wax. Line distortion: Try various values with the chosen line style to achieve the desired effect. Sketch Hatch Line Settings Panel The controls on this panel are to set the properties of the hatch lines of the rendered image.

USER REVIEW
PROS
“it is a tool well-crafted for architecture which functions well and ease the communication between architect and other parties such as clients, engineers as well as contractors with the ability to show all in one”
More professional software compared to such software like Sketchup as BIM implementation makes it easier for a group of people to work on a project simultaneously and efficiently
“The software is not hard to use and as the user interface is simple and easy to use which helps to boost architect performance while the built-in rendering engine also help a lot in render
chang chee yoo | 1001746569
SOFTWARE INTRODUCTION
“Flexible and powerful Architectural designing tool that is able to produce 2D general and detail drawings, 3D perspectives as well as photorealistic renders all in one go. This does save us a lot of time on production.
/
“the software is highly customizable in terms of bringing in plugins such as Grasshopper for modeling and also V-ray or Twinmotion for rendering"
“The software is relatively easy to pick up with a gentle learning curve especially if the user is previously familiar with Revit. With its comprehensive user interface, it provides a very good workflow"

USER REVIEW
CONS
“despite the efficient input and output of data, it gets really slow down when handling a big and complex files especially during rendering. At worst, it crashes when overloaded”
“one of its downside is the lack of ability to create more complex and freeform structure unless going through additional plug-in or software such as Grasshopper and Rhino, which is quite a hassle”
“While the software itself is not expensive at first sight, at least compared to some other softwares. However yearly subscription is one huge factor to consider as it cost more money overtime”
chang chee yoo | 1001746569
SOFTWARE INTRODUCTION
ARCHICAD is a great software, but it is definitely not a common one to be used in the industry, which makes it harder for architect to integrate workflow with other parties who uses a different software
2
“The interface is relatively chunkier and architect has to spend quite a long time to set up the workspace layout compared to other softwares"
“there is not much to complain about the software itself, however when comparing the availability of AEC products provided by suppliers, Revit is on the upper hand”

SOFTWARE INTRODUCTION

SUMMARY As suggested by the name itself, this software is solely crafted towards the AEC community. Although there are many other softwares in the market, what makes ARCHICAD really stands out is that it is able to solve most of the architecture design issues all in one go, while being relatively easy to get familiarize and the workflow is highly intuitive, especially when compare to its main competitor, Revit. Another thing that is so beneficial is the project management and organization features availables on this software. It allows users to make` changes, revisions and modify many things under a controlled environment Whilst the software comes with so many advantages, it is still somewhat imperfect and requires some improvements. The major drawback of this software is the lack of exposure in this industry. As a BIM software, its potential is somewhat halted due to the lack of userbase and poor BIM object library as compared to the more commonly used software. With this, we hope that Graphisoft will do a better job in upgrading and promoting the software in order to expand its community.
