THE LISZT ACADEMY
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Liszt Academy Symphony Orchestra has been playing an increasingly important role in higher music education at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music over the last few years, in line with the emphasis on orchestral training. The ensemble has been giving a series of concerts under the direction of the best Hungarian and foreign musicians and is becoming an independent player on the concert scene in Budapest. In recent years, the orchestra has undergone significant professional development, as evidenced by the high attendance at its concerts and the enthusiastic feedback from the audience.
The student orchestra is made up of the outstanding talents studying at the Liszt Academy, therefore it has a constantly changing membership. It has been awarded the title of National Youth Orchestra, and worked with world-famous foreign and Hungarian artists such as Dennis Russell Davies, David Fray, Péter Eötvös, Zsolt Hamar, Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, the late Zoltán Kocsis, János Kovács, Ádám Medveczky, Pinchas Steinberg, János Rolla, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Gergely Vajda, Gilbert Varga and György Vashegyi.
The ensemble and its artistic activities have developed significantly in recent years, with orchestral work becoming even more prominent, and each academic year several excellent conductors guide the young musicians, giving new impetus to the workshops. Auditions are held for each concert project, and the best students are always admitted to the ensemble.
The symphony orchestra contributes to the internationalization of the Liszt Academy by providing students with the possibility of performing on international level, expand their repertoire, and taking part in cultural exchange that can enlarge their artistic point of view.
The orchestra is an organic part of the Liszt Academy which is an international and multicultural institution since the foundation; orchestra collaboration and joint projects with partner institutions are the key measures of the Liszt Academy’s internationalization strategy. Talent training in symphony orchestra is an integral part of education at the university from the very beginning, as students will take the baton and become the future solo performers and orchestral musicians. That is why the symphony orchestra, made up of its students, has an unparalleled role as playing in an ensemble prepares students for a life as professional artists.
There is a good reason why the Liszt Academy is ranked among the world’s top performing arts universities (22nd in the QS World University Rankings by Subject): the fact that its students perform with world stars makes it unique and internationally attractive. The talent management activities of Liszt Academy’s professors and teachers, and the influence of invited foreign personalities, help our students to become excellent performers.
