CHILE Officially named Republic of Chile (República de Chile in spanish), Chile is a country in South America occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Along with Ecuador, it is one of two countries in South America that do not border Brazil. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Sala y Gómez, Desventuradas and Easter Island. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty. With more than 17 million people, average rates of quality of life, economic growth, human development, globalization and GDP per capita are among the highest in Latin America. Chile has been an active participant in the international political arena. Chile completed a 2-year non-permanent position on the UN Security Council in January 2005. Is currently serving on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors, and the 2007–2008 chair of the board was Chile’s ambassador to the IAEA, Milenko E. Skoknic. The country is an active member of the UN family of agencies and participates in UN peacekeeping activities. It is currently bidding for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council. Chile hosted the Defense Ministerial of the Americas in 2002 and the APEC summit and related meetings in 2004. It also hosted the Community of Democracies ministerial in April 2005 and the Ibero-American Summit in November 2007. An associate member of Mercosur and a full member of APEC, Chile has been an important actor on international economic issues and hemispheric free trade. This is a clear sign of the value for our country of the steady development of education, the increase of research in new techniques to reduce earthquake damage, and sharing experiences and knowledge. Three of the largest earthquakes in the World since 1900 occurred in Chile, which has resulted in an accumulation of experience and knowledge, as well as interesting sites to visit, that we want to share with the world by hosting the 16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering during the second half of September, 2016. According to a survey by the prestigious CNN news media, on its website addressed to correspondents, bloggers and travelers Santiago de Chile was ranked number 3 among the 10 most loved cities of the world. Although located near the biggest carnivals and festivals of Tango in RĂ­o and Buenos Aires, and after an Mw=8,8 earthquake, Santiago is one of the most loved cities, thanks to sustained economic growth, picturesque valley surrounded by mountains and diversity of alternatives for tourism with safety. Therefore, it is not surprising that the New York Times also selected Santiago de Chile as one of 41 cities as places to go and meet.

Almost 400 flights arrive weekly to Santiago de Chile, to the most modern international airport in Latin America, from the most diverse departures and a destination for more than 18 world airlines.
